BACKBONE OF CYLINDRICAL CELL MODULES
In the ever-evolving world of energy storage, cylindrical cell modules have emerged as a pivotal technology, offering a reliable and efficient solution for a wide range of applications. From portable electronics to large-scale power systems, these modules have become indispensable in our quest for sustainable and efficient energy use.
The journey of cylindrical cell modules began with the invention of the practical battery by Alessandro Volta in 1800. Since then, the technology has undergone significant transformations, with the advent of cylindrical cells in the late 20th century marking a significant milestone. These cells, with their cylindrical shape, offered improved structural integrity and uniformity in performance, which were not fully realized in their flat or pouch counterparts.
Cylindrical cell modules are designed with a meticulous attention to detail, ensuring good performance and longevity. The construction typically involves a cylindrical can made of aluminum, steel, or a similar material, which houses the anode, cathode, and electrolyte. The anode and cathode are wound together in a spiral configuration, big the surface area for improved electrochemical reactions. The electrolyte, which facilitates the flow of ions between the electrodes, is carefully selected to ensure safety and efficiency.
There are several types of cylindrical cells, each with its own set of characteristics and applications. The more common types include:
Lithium-ion cells: Known for their high energy density and low self-discharge, these cells are widely used in consumer electronics and electric vehicles.

California Barrel Cactus (Ferocactus cylindraceus)
Family: Cactus Family (Cactaceae)
IUCN Conservation Status: Least Concern
Native to the western Sonoran Desert and eastern Mojave Desert in northern Mexico and the southwestern USA, the California Barrel Cactus grows in dry, sandy soil and typically inhabits scrublands and “forests” of Joshua Trees (the only tree species found throughout most of its range.) Members of this species typically grow in a cylindrical or spherical shape and are covered in a large number of long, thin spines (which, as is typical for a cactus, are highly-modified leaves and serve to protect the cactus from herbivorous animals) which can be used to estimate an individual's age: newly grown spines, which are made of living cells, are deep red in colour, but as the spines develop the cells that make them up die and they become harder and grey in colour, so if an individual has a large number of red spines it is likely young while an individual with entirely grey spines is older. Like almost all plants California Barrel Cacti are photoautotrophs (meaning they are capable of producing nutrients through photosynthesis, a chemical reaction between carbon obtained from the air through tiny respiratory pores on the cactus’ outer surface called stomata and hydrogen obtained from water taken in through the plant’s roots), and like many plants adapted to life in warm, arid conditions they exhibit CAM photosynthesis (a form of photosynthesis in which the stomata only open to take in carbon at night when the air is relatively cool, thereby minimizing water loss through evaporation and allowing the carbon to be put to use in photosynthesis when the sun rises the next day.) The inside of the stem of a California Barrel Cactus is spongy and allows water to be stored as a gel during times of relatively high rainfall to sustain the cactus during times of drought, and as the roots of this species do not go deep into the soil and can re-grow easily California Barrel Cacti can survive being completely uprooted by flash floods, and may even take advantage of floods by allowing them to carry them to areas where the flood water settles, where they will then develop new roots and take in the plentiful water. Like most cacti California Barrel Cacti are hermaphroditic (meaning that every individual can produce both pollen and seeds), and during the early summer they develop “crowns” of yellow flowers which, following pollination by small insects such as bees, develop into small, egg-shaped yellow fruits which are eaten by birds and carried away to allow the seeds within them to develop into mature cacti without competing with their parent.

To put it into perspective, a single prismatic battery can match the energy of 20 to 100 cylindrical batteries. Cylindrical batteries, being smaller in size, are suitable for applications requiring lower power and are used in a wider range of devices.

Fewer Connections: Prismatic batteries require fewer connections due to their larger size. This means there are fewer chances for manufacturing defects, giving them a significant advantage over cylindrical batteries.
Energy vs. Power: Although cylindrical batteries store less energy, they deliver a more powerful performance. This is because they have more connections per ampere hour (Ah). As a result, cylindrical batteries excel in high-performance applications, while prismatic batteries are great for optimizing energy efficiency.
The Prismatic Battery Revolution
The electric vehicle industry, known for its rapid evolution, poses an intriguing question: will prismatic batteries eventually surpass cylindrical ones? Currently, cylindrical batteries dominate the sector, but several factors suggest that prismatic batteries might overthrow them.
Prismatic batteries offer cost-saving opportunities by streamlining manufacturing processes. Their larger size allows for the production of bigger batteries, reducing the number of electrical connections that need welding. Furthermore, prismatic batteries are a perfect match for lithium iron phosphate (LFP) chemistry, known for its affordability and accessibility.

Unlike other chemistries, LFP batteries use easily available materials, eliminating the need for expensive rare materials like nickel and cobalt.
The rise of LFP prismatic cells is already evident, with Asian electric vehicle manufacturers adopting prismatic LFP batteries.
However, LFP chemistry has its limitations, including lower energy storage capacity, making it unsuitable for high-performance applications. Additionally, battery management systems may face challenges in accurately predicting charge levels.
Prismatic Batteries in Energy Storage Systems
The demand for battery packs goes beyond electric vehicles, with energy storage systems (ESS) playing a crucial role. Prismatic batteries are already preferred in ESS applications due to their longer cycle life, reduced risks, and lower costs compared to cylindrical batteries.
Tesla's 4680 cylindrical cells have gained considerable attention for their compact design, high energy density, and cost efficiency. While prismatic batteries have not yet replaced them, Tesla's future decisions could tip the scales.
Will Tesla transition to LFP chemistry and embrace prismatic batteries? The answer could have a significant impact on the battery landscape, especially with the rising global raw material costs.

Elantra N et le rassemblement de Terrebonne

Les constructeurs amĂ©ricains ne sont plus dans le coupïżœïżœïżœsurtout lorsqu’il s’agit de petites berlines agrĂ©ables Ă  conduire. Ils sont devenus des spĂ©cialistes de VUS et de pick-up de tout gabarit sauf pour quelques sportives ultra-puissantes Ă  prix exorbitants. Ils semblent avoir laissĂ© le crĂ©neau des berlines et des coupĂ©s compactes et mĂȘme intermĂ©diaires aux constructeurs d’autres pays. C’est ainsi que les constructeurs sud-corĂ©ens ont hĂ©ritĂ© d’un espace de choix dans le domaine des petites berlines que l’on croyait attribuĂ© aux europĂ©ens et aux japonais. Comment s’en sont-ils sortis? Mieux que l’on pense. Le meilleur exemple nous vient de Hyundai, cet important producteur de voitures aux dimensions raisonnables capable de concurrencer surtout les Japonais! Et l’Elantra est fort possiblement son meilleur argument sur le marchĂ©!
L’Elantra? Cette belle berline qui rĂ©ussit Ă  se distinguer dans le crĂ©neau des « petites » intermĂ©diaires? Pourquoi pas? NĂ©anmoins, c’est bien beau de rĂ©ussir dans un crĂ©neau populaire mais  « ennuyant » ? C’est lĂ  que la concurrence a compris qu’il fallait crĂ©er des autos de cette catĂ©gorie avec un peu plus de « plaisir de conduite »! Cette concurrence, c’est Honda et surtout Volkswagen qui auront su concocter des versions plus « amusantes » de leurs berlines   « ennuyantes » comme les Honda Civic Si, Toyota Corolla GR, les VW GTI et autres! Il n’en fallait pas plus pour que les dĂ©cideurs de SĂ©oul en arrivent Ă  des Elantra plus « sportives ». Et de lĂ  sont nĂ©es les Elantra N.

Elantra N! Le nom ne nous dit pas grand-chose. Mais lorsqu’on en examine les caractĂ©ristiques, on Ă©carquille les yeux! Hyundai Canada m’a rĂ©cemment confiĂ© une de ces berlines Elantra N et l’effet fut plus Ă©tonnant que prĂ©vu!
Qu’est-ce qu’une Hyundai Elantra N? Au dĂ©part, je le rĂ©pĂšte, c’est une berline dite intermĂ©diaire (moi, je la trouve plutĂŽt compacte
) avec une prĂ©sentation plus sportive incluant une calandre repeinte en noir, un pare-chocs avant abaissĂ©, un dĂ©flecteur arriĂšre et des diffuseurs intĂ©grĂ©s. Ajoutez Ă  cela des roues plus excitantes, des pneus Michelin larges et une peinture avec des lignes Ă©videntes et le tour est jouĂ©. On obtient alors une berline au look sportif.

Cependant, l’habit ne fait pas nĂ©cessairement le moine. L’Élantra N (Ă  ne pas confondre avec l’Elantra N Line!) cache sous son capot une mĂ©canique plus Ă©laborĂ©e malgrĂ© le fait que la voiture demeure une traction avant seulement. Son moteur est un « modeste » quatre cylindres turbocompressĂ© Ă  double arbre Ă  cames en tĂȘte de 2,0 litres qui a dĂ©jĂ  Ă©quipĂ© le sportif coupĂ© Veloster. Il fait alors 276 chevaux (286 avec la boĂźte automatique). La voiture qui m’a Ă©tĂ© confiĂ©e Ă©tait Ă©quipĂ©e d’une boĂźte manuelle Ă  six rapports ce qui, Ă  mes yeux, fait encore plus sportif! Ses roues de 19 pouces en alliage lĂ©ger Ă©taient chaussĂ©es d’impressionnants pneus Michelin Pilot Sport 4S 245/35 ZR. Le freinage se fait par des disques aux quatre roues dont ceux d’avant font 14 pouces et ceux d’arriĂšre font 12 pouces. Quant au poids, l’auto pĂšse quelque 3200 livres.

L’intĂ©rieur de l’Elantra N est pareil Ă  celui des autres Elantra de tourisme. Sauf que sa finition y est plus « sportive »! En fait, mais elle est surtout plus plastique! Le tableau de bord (pareil Ă  l’Elantra de base) offre une ligne classique mais son instrumentation peut ĂȘtre modulable avec des cadrans « vidĂ©o » plus rĂ©guliers ou plus sportifs selon la commande Ă©lectronique du comportement de la berline. Celle-ci se fait par l’ordinateur central qui permet au conducteur de « jouer » avec ces modes de conduite. Si la version rĂ©guliĂšre demeure plutĂŽt discrĂšte, le choix de la « Sport » raffermit la suspension et l’effort au volant et rend l’échappement un peu plus bruyant.

Outre cela, Hyundai a choisi d’équiper cette N avec des siĂšges avant plus fermes et plus moulants qui devraient ĂȘtre utiles si l’on fait rĂ©guliĂšrement des exercices de conduite (« lapping ») mais qui peuvent s’avĂ©rer moins confortables sur de longues distances. Ces siĂšges procurent un excellent support latĂ©ral mais, pour de longs dĂ©placements, je suggĂ©rerais des coussins supplĂ©mentaires de Canadian Tire!

Les places arriĂšre sont plus conventionnelles mais aussi plus accueillantes
et confortables Ă  la longue. La malle est relativement utile mais sachez que le dossier des siĂšges d’arriĂšre ne s’abaisse pas. Hyundai y a choisi le croisement des « volumes » pour y ajouter des barres de renforcement devant raffermir la souplesse de la coque pour aider la voiture Ă  ĂȘtre plus ferme, moins souple et Ă  moins « tordre » en compĂ©tition. Car, c’est cela une Elantra N, une auto de course dĂ©guisĂ©e pour la rue!
Sur la route
L’Élantra N est une superbe petite berline pour des dĂ©placements urbains. Mais on sent qu’elle voudrait ĂȘtre « brassĂ©e ». Sa conduite est simple et agrĂ©able mĂȘme si c’est une auto Ă  boĂźte manuelle, ce qui ne me dĂ©range pas malgrĂ© mon Ăąge qui avance de plus en plus. C’est quand mĂȘme drĂŽle de voir un « p’tit vieux » qui aime plutĂŽt le passage mĂ©canique des rapports que la paresse de laisser la boĂźte automatique tout faire (oui, je possĂšde et conduis des Lincoln dont ma « sportive » MKZ mais j’ai aussi une Jeep Ă  boĂźte mĂ©canique et ma Cobra Ă  cinq vitesses, ne l’oubliez pas!).
Toutefois, il faut savoir choisir ses routes de campagne pour savoir profiter du comportement sportif de cette auto. Les larges mais trĂšs « gommants » pneus Michelin apportent beaucoup Ă  ce comportement mais en vĂ©ritĂ©, on aimerait pouvoir profiter d’une petite piste comme le « dĂ©funt » circuit de l’Autodrome Saint-Eustache pour vraiment exploiter  les capacitĂ©s de l’Elantra N!

Lorsqu’on place la commande N en action (au volant), la voiture change un peu. Ce n’est pas une transformation dramatique mais on se sent plus au volant d’une sportive avec une suspension plus ferme, une direction plus responsive et un Ă©chappement lĂ©gĂšrement plus libre. Mais le plaisir ne peut durer qu’un petit moment vu les restrictions du code de la route (pourquoi n’avons-nous plus de ces courtes pistes comme Saint- Eustache pour vivre ces sensations? Qui a permis la construction de ces maisons si prĂšs d’une piste de course qui, avouons-le, n’était pas aussi bruyante Ă  tous moments?).
Je suis un voyageur. Je viens de revenir encore une fois d’Ogunquit dans le Maine (cette fois-ci avec ma MKZ). Je prĂ©fĂšre les grand-routiĂšre aux sportives furtives. MalgrĂ© tout, je me suis rendu de Laval Ă  Gatineau avec ma compagne pour assister Ă  un pagean aĂ©rien (je suis mordu d’aviation et des spectacles comme celui des Thunderbirds amĂ©ricains (F-16), des Red Arrows britanniques ( BAE Hawk T.1) et des Snowbirds canadiens (Canadair CT-114 Tutors). La route semble facile, de Laval Ă  Gatineau par la 15 nord et la 50 ouest mais suffisante pour Ă©valuer les aptitudes routiĂšres de l’Elantra N.
Si j’ai su m’amuser un peu avec le comportement routier de la N sur d’autres routes locales sinueuses, cette petite berline de Hyundai est moins indiquĂ©e pour de longs voyages. Les siĂšges si fermes avec une excellente rĂ©tention dans les courbes deviennent trop durs pour de longs dĂ©placements. On peut s’y faire avec la suspension plus dure en autant que la route soit bien pavĂ©e (ce qui n’est pas nĂ©cessairement le cas au QuĂ©bec!). Et les divers revĂȘtements du pavĂ© autoroutier transmettront beaucoup de bruit dans l’habitacle (ce ne sont pas les pneus
c’est l’isolation des puits d’ailes!).

En passant, les performances de l’auto sont remarquables avec une possibilitĂ© de passer de 0 Ă  100 km/h en moins de six secondes (si vous ĂȘtes rapide au levier de vitesses) et des reprises facilitant les dĂ©passements. La direction est prĂ©cise et le freinage puissant (avec la N). Toutefois, il faut se souvenir que l’Elantra N est une sportive unique conçue pour rivaliser avec d’autres voitures du mĂȘme genre. Il faut savoir aimer conduire une voiture nerveuse et sauvage en mĂȘme temps. Incidemment, j’ai bien apprĂ©ciĂ© la rigiditĂ© de sa caisse et la soliditĂ© de la construction. Conclusion, le constructeur sud-corĂ©en Hyundai est capable de se mesurer Ă  sa concurrence, surtout europĂ©enne!
Question consommation, j’ai obtenu une moyenne de quelque 9,0 l./100 km ce qui ressemble Ă  ce que le constructeur publie (11,0 en ville, 8,1 sur toute pour une moyenne prĂ©vue de 9,7).  Le prix annoncĂ© (2024) est de 41 896 $ (incluant le transport et la prĂ©paration) alors que le constructeur lui accorde une garantie de 5 ans ou 100 000 km, ce qui est plutĂŽt intĂ©ressant. Parmi ses concurrentes, on retrouvera les Honda Civic R ou Si, Toyota Corolla GR, VW Golf GTi et quelques autres voitures du genre.
Encore une fois, ne pas confondre l’Elantra N avec la version N Line qui est moins Ă©laborĂ©e. La version N est nettement plus sportive. Moins confortable mais plus excitante Ă  conduire. Sachez aussi en passant que ces Elantra sont de fĂ©roces compĂ©titeurs en course automobile dans leur catĂ©gorie. IntĂ©ressant, n’est-ce pas?
Le rassemblement des anciennes Ă  Terrebonne
À la derniĂšre minute, quelques heures avant de publier ce blogue, j’ai su que le populaire rassemblement des voitures anciennes Ă  l’Île-des-Moulins de Terrebonne Ă©tait de retour aprĂšs quatre ans d’absence. Et, Ă  ma grande surprise, il y avait plus de voitures que je ne m’étais imaginĂ©. Bien entendu, j’aurais voulu y voir plus de « vraies » anciennes des annĂ©es vingt ou trente mais, en revanche, il y avait plusieurs voitures d’intĂ©rĂȘt!

How ED Medications Work: The Science Behind the Solutions
Erectile dysfunction (ED) is a condition that affects millions of men worldwide. It’s a topic that, despite its prevalence, remains shrouded in a mix of embarrassment and misunderstanding. Fortunately, advancements in medical science have led to the development of effective treatments that can help restore sexual function and improve quality of life. Understanding how these medications work can provide insight into their efficacy and reassure those seeking relief. In this blog, we’ll delve into the science behind ED medications, exploring the mechanisms that make them effective.
Understanding Erectile Dysfunction
Before we dive into how ED medications work, it’s essential to understand what happens in the body during an erection. An erection is a complex physiological process that involves the interaction of the nervous, vascular, and endocrine systems. It begins with sexual arousal, which can be triggered by physical or psychological stimuli. This arousal causes the brain to send signals through the nervous system to the blood vessels in the penis.
In response to these signals, the blood vessels dilate, allowing increased blood flow into the penile tissues. This blood fills the corpora cavernosa, the two cylindrical structures in the penis, causing it to enlarge and become rigid. At the same time, the veins that usually drain blood away from the penis are compressed, trapping the blood and maintaining the erection.
The Role of ED Medications
ED medications primarily target the vascular component of this process. They work by enhancing the natural mechanisms that promote blood flow into the penis and sustain an erection. Let’s explore the two main classes of ED medications and how they function.
1. Phosphodiesterase Type 5 (PDE5) Inhibitors
The most common and well-known ED medications are PDE5 inhibitors. These include sildenafil (Viagra), tadalafil (Cialis), vardenafil (Levitra), and avanafil (Stendra). The primary mechanism of action for PDE5 inhibitors involves the modulation of a specific enzyme in the body.
In the penis, sexual stimulation leads to the release of nitric oxide (NO), a molecule that helps relax smooth muscle cells in the blood vessels. This relaxation allows the blood vessels to dilate, increasing blood flow and resulting in an erection. Nitric oxide achieves this effect by increasing the levels of cyclic guanosine monophosphate (cGMP), a signaling molecule that promotes smooth muscle relaxation.
However, cGMP is broken down by an enzyme called phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5). PDE5 inhibitors work by blocking this enzyme, thereby preventing the breakdown of cGMP. As a result, cGMP levels remain elevated for longer periods, leading to prolonged relaxation of the smooth muscles and sustained blood flow into the penis.
This mechanism explains why PDE5 inhibitors are effective in treating ED. By ensuring that cGMP levels remain high, these medications enhance the body’s natural ability to achieve and maintain an erection.
2. Alprostadil
Another medication used to treat ED is alprostadil, which works differently from PDE5 inhibitors. Alprostadil is a synthetic form of prostaglandin E1, a naturally occurring substance in the body that helps dilate blood vessels and increase blood flow.
Alprostadil can be administered either as an injection directly into the penis or as a urethral suppository. When injected, it causes the blood vessels in the penis to dilate, leading to increased blood flow and an erection. Deux Mustang et la FĂȘte chez JacHOBBY
Le 15 août 2024
Comme promis la semaine derniĂšre, le sujet du blogue de cette semaine portera sur la nouvelle Mustang 2024 mais en deux versions diffĂ©rentes, soit un cabriolet EcoBoost et un coupĂ© GT. Vous aurez compris que l’EcoBoost est le modĂšle mu par le quatre cylindres biturbo de 2,3 litres alors que la GT est celle tant recherchĂ©e avec le V8 de 480 chevaux
rien de moins!
J’aurais dĂ» disposer de la GT plus tĂŽt dans la saison mais il y a eu des changements dans sa disponibilitĂ©. Par consĂ©quent, j’ai eu droit d’abord au modĂšle cabriolet, une superbe voiture toute rouge qui ne passait pas inaperçue. En effet, nombreuses sont les personnes qui m’ont passĂ© de belles remarques sur son look. Ajoutez Ă  cela l’option Performance Package qui incluait des roues spĂ©ciales, des pneus Pirelli trĂšs larges et des freins Brembo dont les Ă©triers Ă©taient identifiĂ©s du nom de la compagnie.
Lors des premiers jours d’essai de cette magnifique voiture, j’ai pu lire un reportage de mon ami Christian Gagnon qui venait de faire un petit « Road trip » du cĂŽtĂ© d’Ogunquit dans le Maine. Ironiquement, moi aussi je me prĂ©parais Ă  un tel petit voyage mais cette fois, au volant de la Mustang rouge. Ce n’est pas la premiĂšre fois que Ford me prĂȘte un cabriolet Mustang pour un tel dĂ©placement. Mais cette fois, c’était avec la version Ă  moteur EcoBoost, soit ce puissant quatre cylindres biturbo Ă  double arbre Ă  cames en tĂȘte qui fait 315 chevaux et 350 li-pi de couple! Je sais, je sais! Vous allez dire : « Une Mustang Ă  quatre cylindres, ce n’est pas une Mustang ! ». Erreur! Il ne s’agit pas ici des Mustang des annĂ©es quatre-vingt dix avec un petit quatre anĂ©mique. Si vous vous souvenez bien, une Mustang GT de 1967-68 avec un V8 de 390 pouces cubes (6,4 litres) ne faisait que 300 chevaux! Et alors que cette derniĂšre pouvait ĂȘtre commandĂ©e avec une boĂźte automatique Ă  trois rapports ou manuelle Ă  quatre vitesses, la nouvelle mouture avec l’EcoBoost sera livrĂ©e qu’avec une boĂźte automatique Ă  10 rapports! Mes quelques essais d’accĂ©lĂ©ration m’ont prouvĂ© que cette Mustang pouvait passer de 0 Ă  100 km/h en moins de six secondes! Sachez que sa vitesse maximale de cette nouvelle Mustang dĂ©passe les 200 km/h! Ces chiffres sont nettement supĂ©rieurs Ă  ceux d’une Mustang GT de 1967-68! Et ajoutez Ă  cela tellement plus de sĂ©curitĂ© possible !

La direction avec assistance Ă©lectrique est conçue pour des rĂ©actions qui peuvent s’avĂ©rer inattendues! Faut dire que les pneus Pirelli PZ4 (PZero) 255/40R 19 y sont pour beaucoup. Mais avec un peu de pratique, on apprend Ă  maĂźtriser la bĂȘte. Le freinage du groupe de Performance est de fabrication italienne Brembo et ils peuvent ĂȘtre trĂšs agressifs si on les sollicite vraiment! Enfin, la suspension arriĂšre dĂ©sormais indĂ©pendante contribue vraiment Ă  faire de cette auto une vĂ©ritable voiture sportive avec une tenue de route exceptionnelle! Il faut spĂ©cifier que les ingĂ©nieurs de Ford ont grandement revu le chĂąssis de la Mustang pour 2024. En passant, Ford avait Ă©galement Ă©quipĂ© mon petit cabriolet du systĂšme d’échappement modulable Ă©lectronique qui permet un certain son « libre ». À certains niveaux, ce son peut ĂȘtre dĂ©sagrĂ©able. Mais Ă  plein gaz, il se rapproche de celui des voitures sport haut de gamme. NĂ©anmoins, je trouve qu’à prĂšs de 1500 $, c’est payer cher pour cet effet pas toujours rĂ©ussi!

Donc, direction Ogunquit! Le temps Ă©tant moins agrĂ©able, nous sommes descendus, ma compagne et moi, par l’autoroute amĂ©ricaine 89 jusqu’à la 93 sud Ă  Concord, New Hampshire pour bifurquer sur la 101 qui devait nous mener Ă  la 95 nord. Toutefois, Ă  la hauteur de celle-ci, j’ai plutĂŽt dĂ©cidĂ© de continuer vers la route 1 qui longe le littoral de la mer. Nous nous sommes alors retrouvĂ©s dans la rĂ©gion de Hampton. Je vous recommande une tournĂ©e dans cette rĂ©gion oĂč les maisons du bord de mer sont d’une grande beautĂ© (et d’une grande richesse!). Puis, le soleil est sorti, juste en temps pour baisser la capote et finir le voyage vers Ogunquit, toujours sur la route 1.

L’intĂ©rieur de la Mustang 2024 (identifiĂ©e du numĂ©ro de code S650) a Ă©tĂ© complĂštement refait incluant un nouveau tableau de bord coiffĂ© d’un Ă©norme Ă©cran horizontal qui permet de reproduire quatre types d’instruments incluant celui imitant les cadrans analogiques des anciennes versions. Malheureusement, le design de ce tableau de bord n’est pas aussi Ă©lĂ©gant que celui de presque toutes les versions d’antan. Il n’y a donc plus de ces deux « niches » qui caractĂ©risaient si bien les Mustang. Mais, ce que j’ai y trouvĂ© de plus agaçant, c’est que l’écran en lui-mĂȘme est trĂšs difficile Ă  lire en plein soleil lorsque la capote est abaissĂ©e. Outre cela, mon cabriolet Mustang d’essai avait cette option de performance qui, aprĂšs un peu de recherche dans l’ordinateur, me permettrait de conduire en mode « drift »! Avec cette option, on obtient un frein de stationnement avec un bras semblable Ă  celui d’un systĂšme mĂ©canique. Toutefois, il s’agit d’une adaptation Ă©lectronique qui exige qu’on le pousse vers le bas pour le dĂ©gager. Faire de la « drift » avec une Mustang Ă©quipĂ©e de pneus P Zero ? Pas pour moi, merci.

Quant Ă  la malle, sachez qu’elle peut contenir plus de bagages que vous ne le pensez. Malheureusement, l’option de la sonorisation supĂ©rieure inclut un haut-parleur « sub-woofer » dans le coffre qui prend un peu de place!
Sur la route
Donc, sur la route, ce cabriolet Mustang est tellement agrĂ©able Ă  conduire. L’habitacle est relativement silencieux (sauf sur du pavĂ© rugueux) et la suspension respectable malgrĂ© l’option de performance. Encore une fois, la direction est vraiment stable mais attention aux corrections brusques, mĂȘme les plus dĂ©licates. Cette direction rĂ©agit trĂšs rapidement.

Si le besoin de dĂ©passer se prĂ©sente, vous pouvez compter sur la puissance Ă©tonnante du quatre cylindres. La visibilitĂ© est trĂšs bonne malgrĂ© la capote. Évidemment, si vous l’abaissez, elle est encore meilleure. En passant, je suis revenu d’Ogunquit avec la capote abaissĂ©e, mĂȘme dans les montagnes. Avec les glaces relevĂ©es, le voyage fut des plus agrĂ©ables.
Bien entendu, la Mustang Ă  propulsion n’est pas le vĂ©hicule idĂ©al pour les routes enneigĂ©es quoique certains essais que j’ai faits avec des pneus d’hiver appropriĂ©s se sont avĂ©rĂ©s concluants sur des routes enneigĂ©es ou glacĂ©es. Tout dĂ©pend du jugement du conducteur. Pour les plus vieux ayant connu la pĂ©riode oĂč nous n’avions que des autos Ă  propulsion, ce n’est qu’une question de se rappeler des plus vieilles techniques au volant. Ma Mustang d’essai avait un pont arriĂšre Torsen qui peut aider durant la saison froide.
Question consommation, mon voyage incluant de petites excursions annexes m’a donnĂ© une lecture moyenne de 9,7 l./100 km. Il est mieux d’utiliser de l’essence super pour mieux exploiter le moteur EcoBoost. Mais pour de telles excursions, l’essence rĂ©guliĂšre devrait suffire.
Cette toute derniĂšre gĂ©nĂ©ration de Mustang en version cabriolet peut valoir 48 500 $ mais celle qui me fut confiĂ©e par Ford ira chercher dans les 63 650 $ Ă  cause des nombreuses et coĂ»teuses options incluant celle de performance (6500 $), le systĂšme d’échappement modulable (1495 $) et la suspension avec ajustements Ă©lectroniques (2500 $). Ajoutez-y les 2095 $ de transport et prĂ©paration et vous vous retrouverez avec une facture finale de 65 460 $.
Et la GT, elle?
De retour du Maine, j’ai Ă©changĂ© le cabrio pour un coupĂ© mais en version GT mĂ» par un puissant V8 de 5,0 litres qui ne dĂ©veloppait pas moins de 486 chevaux! Dans ce cas, ce puissant bolide Ă©tait Ă©quipĂ© d’une boĂźte manuelle Ă  six rapports. Toutefois, ce superbe bolide tout jaune n’avait pas autant d’options sauf pour celle des Ă©chappements modulables de 1495 $. Une fois en fonction libre (ce qui peut venir avec la fonction Race disponible par l’intermĂ©diaire de l’ordinateur), ils Ă©mettent le son tant recherchĂ© d’un V8 dĂ©bridĂ©. Ce son est nettement plus agrĂ©able que celui du quatre cylindres mais il viendra avec le coĂ»t d’opĂ©ration du V8! Il est possible de l’attĂ©nuer pour le dĂ©marrage en milieu urbain (pour le pas « écƓurer » les voisins mais pour ce faire, il faut encore une fois passer par l’ordinateur de bord.

L’intĂ©rieur du coupĂ© GT est tout aussi accueillant que celui du cabriolet mais il diffĂšre de ce dernier par le fait que la division entre les siĂšges arriĂšre et le coffre obligatoire sur le cabrio est remplacĂ© par des les dossiers repliables des siĂšges arriĂšre ce qui augmentera considĂ©rablement la capacitĂ© de chargement des bagages pour deux occupants! Incidemment, ce coupĂ© n’avait pas l’option des modes de conduite de Performance alors on n’y voit pas le levier des freins d’urgence. À la place, on y voit le commutateur du frein de stationnement Ă©lectrique.

Sur la route
Bien entendu, conduire une GT est une expĂ©rience totalement diffĂ©rente que celle au volant de l’ÉcoBoost. Dans le cas de ce coupĂ©, je m’en suis tenu Ă  des dĂ©placements en situation urbaines sauf pour quelques petites excursions sur autoroute.
Les accĂ©lĂ©rations de la version GT sont, on s’en doute, beaucoup plus excitantes que celles de l’ÉcoBoost alors que passer de 0 Ă  100 km/h en moins de 5 secondes. Je vous Ă©pargne la vitesse maximale qui devrait dĂ©passer les 240 km/h! Sauf que, dans le cas de ma GT d’essai, celle-ci Ă©tait Ă©quipĂ©e de pneus Continental ProContact alors que Ford m’avait habituĂ© Ă  des Pirelli P Zero. Ce devrait ĂȘtre un pneu tout aussi performant mais
VoilĂ , peut-ĂȘtre, la cause d’un certain vague dans la direction de cette auto. Autrement, il est difficile de trouver des dĂ©fauts Ă  cette voiture, du moins du cĂŽtĂ© des performances. En ce qui a trait Ă  la consommation, j’ai obtenu une moyenne de 14,7 l./100 km (l’ordinateur de bord indiquait 15,0) mais, encore une fois, en situation presque uniquement urbaine. Cependant, sur grand route, le mĂȘme indicateur marquait autour des 10,5 l./100 km.

En effet, lors de la derniĂšre rencontre des concessionnaires Ford aux États-Unis, le constructeur amĂ©ricain leur a montrĂ© des prototypes ou projets de Mustang Ă  quatre portes et de Mustang hors-route (plus poussĂ©es que la version Rally de la Mach E). Il y aurait aussi une autre voiture plus petite dont on ne sait rien jusqu’ici. De plus, Ford serait Ă  prĂ©parer un petit fourgon de livraison basĂ© sur la camionnette Maverick (et ce, aprĂšs avoir abandonnĂ© le Transit Connect). Ce n'est pas fini!

So the chemist and his Mister Handy surveyed the junkyard for viable robotics specimens. Angel separated at times from its owner, to return and report back its findings, while ‘Choly annotated everything useful they located. Seven Mister Gutsies, five Mister Handies, and one Miss Nanny had been left here lacking well over half their parts. Dozens of heavily damaged Eyebots and Protectrons joined the General Atomics robotics scrap among the landscape of car shells which had hidden the true nature of the junkyard from street view. Though not G.A. in origin either, ‘Choly found an Assaultron head and flinched away from the skull-like cyclopean structure, only to stumble and nearly drop his coffee cup. Upon righting himself with his cane and catching his breath, he took a sip of his coffee, and his gaze absently drifted up to the wall of automotive carcasses. He’d located the prototype Sentry Bot, wedged among the rusted sheet steel stacked high to either side of it as though a child playing hide and seek in a stack of firewood.
He sputtered, choking on his drink. It had been two hundred years since he’d last seen one. Despite the base’s heavily classified security status, the Deenwood Compound relied heavily upon Mister Handy and Mister Gutsy accommodations, and only had three Sentries at their employ. True to his memory, the thing before him was, in essence, a sentient tank. A heavy tripod of mecanum limbs supported its hulking dark green body, its ocular sensor matrix was encased in a helmet-like dome recessed for the most part into its chest component, and its thick, broad arms terminated in a pair of miniguns. A mixture of relief and disappointment came when he recognized that it did not have mortar launchers in its shoulder components like those they had on base, and he found himself wondering which was the more advanced model. From the sound of the documentation on the terminal in the junkyard’s office, it had only been dumped here mere years before the nuclear exchange took place, so Deenwood’s Sentries in theory predated this one.
“Mister Carey, I believe we’ve identified the majority of resources on site, if you’d like to get started.” Angel paused beside its owner and looked where ‘Choly did. “I see!”
“From what I can tell, it’s a complete robot,” ‘Choly told it, vaguely nagged by his compulsions. “If it’s still got its Fusion Cores, it could be powered up...”
“Oh, but we shan’t be doing that. It’s forbidden by military protocols, and it’s RobCo tech besides.”
“...You’re right.” ‘Choly stared at his dress shoes a moment before looking to his Handy in earnest. “I know that I’ve made a promise to you, and that’s why I’m asking and not... pretty literally... going behind your back. Can I have one Berry Mentat for this task? I understand the way that Gutsy and Nanny parts can interface with those of a Handy, but I want to make this more than just a parts swap-out. I want to optimize what each component can provide you.”
“I imagined that your sobriety wouldn’t last long,” it resigned, to which its owner winced sheepishly. “Can we at least come to an arrangement, then, Sir? I shall dispense as requested, but you must keep your entire chem stock in my storage. If it’s too much to ask, for you to put me in charge of monitoring your chem usage, then I’m afraid I’ll have to decline the request.”
‘Choly smiled and put a hand to Angel’s pale blue spherical body.
“You drive a very hard, but very far, bargain. Let’s go inside, so I can sit while I strategize how to approach the upgrade.”
“Thank you for being reasonable.”
Once inside, Angel dispensed a single lozenge to its owner. Popping it under his tongue, he got to work scrawling schematics concepts on the back and front of a manila folder, and adding all kinds of notes wherever they would fit. This included a mix of G.A.-exclusive combinations and combinations with RobCo inclusions, though he had every intention to respect Angel’s boundaries--even if the warranty no longer mattered for all manner of reasons, it provided a very black-and-white understanding of what Angel was comfortable with ‘Choly doing to its body and programming. He finished off the coffee from the day before while he worked. They agreed that one of each tendril would be the ideal: a standard Handy limb, outfitted with an interchangeable laser, a saw, and a pincer; a standard Nanny limb, with an interchangeable pincer, a saw, and an injection tool; and a standard Gutsy limb, with an interchangeable saw, a laser, and a minigun. Barring locating sufficient 5.56mm and MF cell ammunition to keep the Gutsy arm equipped, the real task was optimizing the motherboard’s ability to wield any combination of these three at a moment’s notice, without overloading the processing speed. A standard issue Handy, Gutsy, or Nanny came optimized with programming to handle three of any one of the limb sets, not one of each. But, as he skimmed the programming with his Pip-Boy key-prong plugged into Angel, the Berries found a solution to the limbs’ shared compatibility which also facilitated the other element of the upgrades--its hydraulics capacity via its thruster calibration.
‘Choly requested Angel retrieve the required parts from the junkyard, and once they were amassed inside, he had the Handy mount the curved forks of the robotics workbench and switch off its pilot light. Then, he got to work, motivated by the creative impulses of the Berry Mentats.
“I’m sorry that we didn’t find any paint,” he started, while he finished tightening the bolts underneath Angel on its thruster core comprised of pieces from each model of robot, onto which he would re-mount the new set of tendrils. “You’ll have mismatched shell colors for a while. But, for what it’s worth, white, sky blue, and army green isn’t an unattractive combination.”
“I’m simply grateful that you’re taking all this time and effort on my behalf, Sir. I’ll never get used to the sensation of being physically incapable of movement. I know it will only last a few more hours at most, but I worry my speech module is compensating for my inability to move anything else.”
“We’ve already refilled your fuel tank. And done all the cutting and welding, like armoring the top curve of the tendrils with pieces of van wheel well arches. Protecting the joints will help deter them from getting severed again. --But with the modified core, attaching and calibrating the tendrils will go very quickly. What I’m most grateful for, though, is that I could welt those car door handles and a pair of motorcycle foot pegs onto you, so I can stop worrying that the fabric harness is going to rip off through wear.”
“I quite like the choice of Chryslus Coupe handles. They’re sleek and angular, in contrast to the smooth curves of my design.”
“I figured you’d notice the model I picked them from,” he grinned, getting started loading the tendrils one at a time onto their cylindrical chassis. “They’re not the ones from his Coupe, but I feel like his ghost would come to haunt me if I so much as considered touching his car.”
“He really is gone... isn’t he?” Even Angel’s voice grew distant.
“He was gone two hundred years ago,” ‘Choly replied without missing a beat, too detached from emotions by the effects of the potent nootropics to get distracted from his task. “The moment your biometric scanners could no longer recognize him, he was gone. “Forgive my sentimentality. I don’t intend to upset you, Mister Carey. I just... I know I’m merely an artificial intelligence, but I really do miss Mister Hawthorne.”
The chemist plugged in his Pip-Boy key-prong and got to working on calibration and maintenance scans.
“That makes two of us.” After a pause, he added, “It’s better, this way.”
“Agreed.”
“I’m glad we still have each other, Angel.”
“And I you. I hope it stays that way for some time. Not having either of you... I nearly fell apart before you resurfaced from the vault.”
“I’m glad I can still be here for you.” He smiled up at its ocular lenses. “I’ve optimized the programming for your new ocular lens armatures and sensors, as well as for your new thruster hydraulics and new tendrils. You’ll still have your Handy software, but it’s largely running with Gutsy and Nanny hardware. I have to power you down in order to initiate the maintenance scans, and then reboot you so that the system will pick up the new hardware. Are you ready?”
“I cannot wait to reawaken and understand for myself what humans mean when they see everything with new eyes.”
While Angel powered down, and the Pip-Boy ran its diagnostics with the robot turned off, ‘Choly couldn’t move from his place in the office chair beside the workbench, and, for lack of anything better to do tethered in place, he fished his flip lighter and a half-pack of menthols from his coat pockets. He didn’t smoke much, less than a pack a month, but sometimes his restlessness got the best of him. It was more about the ritual and paraphernalia than it was about the nicotine, and he readily admitted this. The irony glossed over him, that the Handy would have considered it a contraband chem in his possession, had it been alert to the behavior. The cigarette was out before Angel’s boot sequence initiated. He retracted the key-prong and watched. Angel’s tendrils seemed to stretch, and its three eye-stalks emerged from their concealed cutout plates to either side and front of its body.
“General Atomics International Mister Handy, 2066 model, nickname ‘Angel.’ Custom order serialization 33313222123123.” Angel registered its company, relit its pilot light, and dismounted from the workbench forks. “Good evening, Mister Carey!”
“How do you feel?”
“Like a new robot.” It sped forward, then side to side, and it inspected its tendrils with a seeming thoughtfulness. “It’s peculiar. The programming for Mister Gutsy and Miss Nanny parts has always existed to some capacity within my own programming from the beginning, but to feel more of it being executed. Would it be strange of me to speculate that it... it feels right?”
“You’re allowed to feel things,” ‘Choly grinned, proud of his work. “Let’s go out into the yard and see if there’s any more fine tuning we need to do with your new parts. You’ve got enough ammunition to do a little target practice, and I want to test out the soundness of the harness mounts. ...I know my opinion matters far less than your own, but I think your new look is pretty fetching.”
“I quite agree! These new ocular lenses have heightened sensory arrays in them, so I can see and perceive even behind me. I’m fascinated with all the details filling into my readings. Including a heightened understanding of what I look like. Dare I say, you’ve made me quite a bit more self-aware, Sir.”
“As long as you’re aware of how wonderful you are, I think we’re working in the right direction.”

A/N: Knowledge of the Empire’s canonical Blackwing project is not necessarily required.  However, do know that zombies are canon in both the old Expanded Universe, and the current canon.  And Han and Chewie have had to deal with them in both. Sadly I don’t own any of this. And there’s really no zombies here.  But I have been a participant in a zombie march. :)

Timeline: Star Wars rebellion era, pre-Empire Strikes Back - existing within both canons.

“Stop complaining and waving yer arms. Chewie, your fur keeps getting caught in the cuff seal.” Han Solo’s heavy drawl echoed down the vessel’s starboard hall, as a petite brown-haired woman clad in a white jumpsuit strode towards the source of the noise. There was a muffled howl, and Han answered.
“Yeah, yeah. I’ll get my fishbowl sealed up, just hang on.” A whoosh of expressed air and just the shuffling of bodies sounded through the confines of the corridor.
The Rebel Commander, Princess Leia Organa, rounded the vessel’s starboard access corridor, which had become a temporary staging area for Han and Chewbacca’s EVA outing. Around the pair, were strewn a myriad assortment of a half-dozen mismatched lockers and cases.
The princess paused at the bulkhead, watching the pair of smugglers-turned-Rebel mercenaries. Leia acknowledged the Corellian and Wookiee with a nod. Settling against the alloy-steel support, she ran her eyes up and down the chaos of equipment and boxes scattered everywhere.
Both beings were now fully sealed in their Immediac model-10 extravehicular activity spacesuits. Han’s back was turned to her, the broad expanse of the pilot’s shoulders encased in numerous layers: of suit, the padded straps of his flak vest, harness webbing, life-support and Force-knows what else. He was preoccupied with inspecting the integrity of the locking ring on the neck of his two-and-a-half meter tall Wookiee partner’s custom-sized spacesuit as Leia stepped up a few steps behind him. Chewbacca barked at Han, the noise muffled and bowled. Han shifted and pivoted slightly to catch the Princess’s eye on the edge of his helmet’s field of view. She could just barely glimpse a corner of the upturned corner of his mouth as he quirked a grin in greeting. Then he winked.
Leia blushed, as surge of heat travelled through her body in response to the Corellian’s flirtations. She hated him for doing that to her.
Every time.
She bit back something hostile, and gave him a forced neutral look, eyebrows raised. Han shrugged and returned to his work. Leia, relieved that Solo turned and their eye-contact broken, settled for staring at his back.
And rear.
Oh, wow.
That, then, became an exercise in distraction, too.
In that moment, Leia decided that an EVA suit, despite its overall bulk, had never looked quite so
 good, until it had been stretched over the rangy form of the attractive Corellian pilot working in front of her. The rather sleek black military-grade unit was agreeably filled out in all the proper dimensions by Han’s lean athletic frame. A signal-red, decimeter-wide stripe ran down the outsides of the torso, enhancing the suit’s lines. Damnit Solo, only a ridiculous flyboy like you could make one of those bulky things look sexy. She bit the inside of her cheek, stifling an admiring smirk. She had to admonish herself mentally to be serious.
Eyes front, Princess.
“Hey there, Princess.” Han’s gruff baritone echoed her title, the greeting rendered tinny and indistinct by the EVA suit’s sealed confines. He tugged experimentally on the wrist seal’s locking ring of Chewie’s glove. Chewbacca watched her, amused, from inside his helmet with kind, patient blue eyes.
She placed the three spare blaster-pistol charges Han had requested on the lid of a nearby case. Curious, Leia cracked open the lid of a larger aluminum case next to her leg, peeking inside, and sucked in a harsh breath upon viewing the contents. A well-worn SX-21 Merr-Sonn pump-action scatter blaster lay atop an array of more anti-personnel munitions; cluster grenades, wide-area frag launchers, and most worrisome -  high volume incendiary throwers. Each item designed to dole out maximum destruction over a concentrated radius in enclosed areas - such as inside the halls of a ship.
“Gods, Solo.” Leia whistled it out. “Are you looking to start another war?”
When there was no response, she looked up to see the boys fully absorbed in their final preparations. Sealed in their suits as they were, there was little chance they could have overheard her casual exclamation.
Chewbacca’s acute hearing seemed to have picked up Leia’s voice, however. He grinned, fangs glinting in the shadowed confines of the helmet. He punched a control on his glove and she saw the lights on the heads-up display inside of the Wookiee’s helmet reflect inside the bowl’s glass, detailing his furry face. Chewbacca barked amiably at Leia again and pulled on the buckle assembly of a thick harness he had strapped to his torso. Han’s attention went to the harness and tested the various straps and buckles by firmly tugging on them. He moved around to the Wookiee’s back and quintuple-checked the several monitors and gauges amidst the life-support array and various equipment packed on.
“All good there, buddy.” Han reached up and slapped the silver Millennium Falcon-shaped insignia patch on the side of Chewbacca’s shoulder, one of the few areas on his body not completely enclosed by harnesses and equipment. The Wookiee bent at the waist to pick up the beaten and worn end of the shoulder stock of a personal-sized heavy repeater cannon, attaching it to the cylindrical power supply on his back. He latched the housing of the weapon’s business end to a quick release clamp on the canister.
Satisfied with his preparations, Han stepped over to Leia, retrieving the spare blaster cells she had brought. He inserted them into the loops of his characteristic DL-44 pistol’s low-slung blaster rig, the leather belting refitted to accommodate the added volume of his spacesuit. He gave her a rakish look that put a small smile on her lips and lit a fire in her core.
“Thanks Princess.” Han’s voice was still distant and he said something else she couldn’t quite make out. Sensing her confusion, the Corellian rolled his eyes at himself, and made a sharp jutting motion with his chin, nudging the toggle inside the helmet.
“We’re pressured up and pretty much ready to go.” Han repeated, the sound emitting from a speaker in the control module near the center of his suit’s chest. He slung the strap of an Imperial-issue heavy blaster rifle over his shoulder, securing the strap with a hasp clip to a fixed D-ring on the webbing near his shoulder.
Leia shook her head at them. She reiterated what she had said a moment ago.
It would have been highly unusual for Han or Chewie to be unarmed. Han often carrying what would be considered a near-arsenal of weapons on a regular “safe” day - nearly all of it illegal in most civilized systems. The two smugglers had a lifetime of living on the fringes of society and legality. Never safe,always sleeping with one eye open. However, she noted that the Wookiee had abandoned his traditional bowcaster for the repeater cannon, something she didn’t even realize the two smugglers owned (owned being a purely euphemistic term with regard to the two widely-hunted Rebel criminals).
“Aah. No,” Han looked to Chewie, who was studiously ignoring the two humans. Han’s face was sheepish inside the helm. “We’re just not taking any chances, ya see,” he explained - rather lamely, Leia thought.
“—you wouldn’t tell command what this is about,” Leia reminded the two smugglers. “And yet, again, at the last minute you jump in and play hero.”
Han made a show of adjusting suit’s his wrist mirror, then threw his arms wide in frustration and pointed a black gloved finger at the Princess’s pert nose.
“Your skinny Festian buddy, Fulcrum–or whatever his name–got the info from me four years ago. That kriffin spook drugged me up and even got me to take him in front of Jab—“
Han shut up suddenly, and she could see his lips screw up in mid-rant.
Chewbacca turned his audio on and woofed at her and Han.
“What? In front of what?” Leia pressed, intrigued. “Who?”
Han shot a baleful eye at the Wookiee, who returned it unabashedly, glaring down at his captain, his dark lips curling up to reveal long fangs in challenge.
“He got you too, that night, buddy.” Han scowled, reminding his co-pilot of some past dereliction of duty.
Chewbacca snarled something in return. Leia could see Han stiffen in response, twisting his torso slowly and threateningly to stare up at the Wookiee that towered over the Corellian by two heads.
“Not another word about that,” Solo warned his partner. Chewbacca barked further and Han turned pink with embarrassment.
“He caught me at a weak moment.” The smuggler explained to his copilot.
Chewie’s next reply was mocking.
“Jenny was just being inhospitable that night, is all!” Han retorted angrily. Then his eyes flicked back to Leia and the Corellian went crimson. “Chewie
”
So, the Wookiee just laughed long and hard at his human friend. Leia rolled her eyes.
“If it helps your wounded ego,” Leia elucidated, then resumed in a wry tone, “or libido, “ she calculated, correctly, by the way Han nearly turned purple. “Captain Cassian Andor was one of our best spies. Actually, the best. Without him, “ Leia swallowed, pausing. Han’s gloved hand reached out to comfort her, recognizing her mood shift. Leia twisted to the right, side-stepping him, swiping at her cheek. “Without him, we would have never gotten the plans for the Death Star.”
Emotions such as regret, loss, anger and guilt swirled around Leia. So many “What ifs” lingered around the operation to uncover and destroy the Death Star. Entire cities were laid to waste before it turned its planet-killing laser onto her homeworld of Alderaan, killing billions. If, if, if
. Always with the ifs.
And now they were dealing with an Imperial superweapon that had been put aside around the same time. The rebel operative Andor had reported it then, as a low priority, though the entire sector associated with the project was declared “Absolutely Off Limits” in rare decree that spanned all levels of the Imperial Command structure.
Any ship that went in, did not come out. Period.
And somehow, by some act of Force-invoked coincidence, Han Solo and his co-pilot had gotten themselves entangled with whatever lurked there three years earlier, and were of only four people that emerged from the region in that time, pairing up to watch over each other and lose themselves in the wider galaxy. Four unlikely beings; a smuggler, a wookiee, an Imperial doctor, and an orphan boy - survivors who reportedly faced a ravening cannibalistic mass of recently deceased plague victims. A terrifying, all-consuming horror, apparently spawned by a bioweapon that exterminated all but one in a thousand humanoids.
The Rebel operative Andor was following various leads on Imperial superweapon projects, when he tracked down a rumor and discovered a traumatized and drunken Solo on Tatooine not long after.
Another, “If”, Leia counted on a finger. If the Rebel Intelligence service had put forward their files on this region of space to Command, before numerous scouting missions were dispatched to disappear amongst the floating wrecks, lives could have been saved. If they had first gone over the holos Andor had taken while interviewing Solo, they would have seen the fear in the battle-hardened Corellian smuggler’s eyes describing in drunken, disjointed speech, how would they have reacted?
“They were all
 dead. Just piles of ‘em. Torn up. Then, then they woke up.”
“—Gray and flowing, following, looking for a way into you.”
“Just swarms of ‘em. Running, screaming
.eating.”
“I could feel it coming in my lungs. The
The things it makes you think; all this red, hungry, gnawing.”
“I-, It almost got Chewie, he-, uh...uhm... the Doc intervened.”
“This, could take out entire sectors.”
Leia bit down the queasiness she felt recalling the hours viewing the holo-video, the blacked out lines of Imperial data files, and the Rebel scientists’ findings from Han and Chewie’s DNA tissue - samples Cassian Andor had stolen from the pair when he’d ambushed them in Mos Eisley. The conclusion sounded utterly insane, preposterous, a horror story for old-timers to tell younglings.
“Zombies
” Solo’s hissed warning, haunting Leia from Andor’s holos of him.
Simple adult logic told her it could not be true.
Leia ruminated about this mission. Just outside the adjacent hatch and airlock, floated the flickering derelict of an Alliance corvette starship. Han had cursed up and down in a dozen languages, grousing that this was too close already. Kept at a distant kilometer by a proximity lock from their vessel’s tractor beam, Han and Chewie adamantly refused linking the two vessels. Hence, was the necessity of an EVA outing for the two pilots to investigate the remains of the corvette.
For safety, they said.
For boarding a ship with just one lifeform aboard?
Han and Chewbacca were paranoid creatures of habit, but Leia had to admit she had never witnessed it this degree of extreme.
Upon an extensive and detailed sensor scan, – carefully monitored by Han and Chewie - they discovered that the three hundred beings recorded aboard the stricken Alliance craft beyond, had been reduced to the stubborn life-signature of one sole unknown humanoid, situated somewhere near the rear of the craft. Yet, the mass and density-signature scans showed the ship filled with clustered volumes of what could only be the remains of the crew and soldiers within.
Not only that... Han and Chewbacca had grudgingly acquiesced to Luke and Leia’s accompanying the mission, on the grounds - demands, Leia amended, - that the two smuggler’s preparations and procedures were not interfered with. Their word was law here. And that it was only the pair of them, out there.
Their orders too, hardly filled Leia with confidence, “If we come back, and we are not ourselves; sick, delirious, coughing, whatever... If there are no proper signal flares, or voice communications
 If something is off, something is terribly, terribly wrong, - GO - cut the tethers and get the hell out of there. Do not, under ANY circumstances, attempt to rescue us.”
She had to promise, swearing upon the honor of the Royal House Organa, and repeatedly assure them that she and Luke would do as they requested if the circumstance arose.
And what was up with Luke? Leia fretted. Since arriving within system, Luke was a mess. Curled up in the cockpit; physically sickened by the Force’s signature in the area, the young rebel was in no condition to be enclosed in a spacesuit.
Luke said he’d recover shortly. He would just meditate through it. Saying, he’d be able to block it off in no time. He seemed to improve, until something had a softly thudded against the cockpit’s transparisteel glass outside, leaving a viscous red and grey smear. He’d yelped, distracting Han and Leia from their duties, rushing to fore to assist Luke. Han glared in horror at the smudge, clearly recognizing it. But the wide-eyed Jedi had waved them off, dismissing it, whispering something about space debris.
Han gave the kid a sympathetic look and resumed his preparations aft for the EVA, his mood grim for the next few hours.
Leia chose to avoid the surly Corellian for the afternoon, and spent a few timeparts sitting in the chair next to Luke, watching the shadows of dozens of derelict vessels beyond, as they drifted in front the glittering panorama of the brilliant field of stars beyond. They said little, communicating comfort through some unseen conduit.
Chewbacca’s lingering words from the intelligence briefing, roared at ear-splitting volume to the elite members of high council – shortly before Chewie and Han were temporarily locked up in the brig for (even louder) insubordination, and refusal to supply information on past experience with the area’s “Known unknowns,” as per General Cracken’s intelligence parlance – was translated and quoted, oh-so ominously and literally by the prim voice of Leia’s protocol droid C-3PO.

The two-century-old Clone War veteran Wookiee’s grim warning looped over and over in the background of the Princess’s mind as she observed the present-Han secure the ship’s airlock’s safety tethers to their suits.
Pushing away from her lean against the bulkhead, Leia had to admit, she had a very bad feeling about this.
She watched Han gather up a satchel containing slicer kits, fusion cutters, clawed durasteel spreaders and truly archaic implements such as pry bars, and hammers. It was enough salvage and illegal ships’ hull-breaking tools to get the Wookiee and Corellian thrown in an Imperial penitentiary for at least a decade. Han passed a set to Chewbacca, who, after shouldering the bag, make a point of intently reviewing the energy level gauges on his weapon.
“See what you can bring back. “ Leia requested Han in sotto voce, she crossed her arms, not entirely sure what she actually expected. At the very least, she wanted them - needed him – back. Hopefully, they would locate what had to be that sole crew member on the life-scan, some logs, nav-data, or any evidence of why the months-overdue craft spun listlessly, here, near the feathered outskirts of Dathomir’s primary star’s Oort cloud.
“For you, your Worship; I would drag a star out of the sky.” Han bowed dramatically, paraphrasing an infamously corny Chandrilan poet for the Princess.
Grim atmosphere, or not; Han Solo could still extract a snigger from the implacable Princess Leia. Oooh, she hated him for that unique ability.
Han’s head popped up from the genuflection, his helmet’s heads-up displays illuminated the lower half of Solo’s ruggedly handsome features in a subtle shifting blue and green glow. And he winked
Again.
A warm surge spread across her cheeks, and Leia momentarily despised him for it
Again.
“Don’t do anything stupid, Nerfherder.” Leia cautioned, when she recovered her composure.
Han gave her his best comical Who, me?  expression, pointing two fingers at himself. But the humor didn’t seem to quite reach his eyes.
Impulsively Leia reached up, wrapping her slim fingers around Han’s EVA suit’s torso webbing. She hauled on it, dragging Han’s faceplate nearly level with her petite stature. She mused at his startled discomfit at her action. Craning her neck, she moved her face nose-to-glass with him. Han smirked ruefully at her, at the obvious literal and metaphorical barriers that seemed to always come up between them.
“Sweetheart, “ Han began, his voice gravelly, “I gotta tell y-“
Leia shook her head at him, the message obvious. We’ll figure us out later.
Leia clutched the sides of Solo’s helm, each studying the other,warring with the need to say what had to be said. To tip over into that beautiful abyss now, would shatter them both if something unfortunate happened here today.
Leia noticed the dull grey corona that had settled in the ordinarily glittering green and gold flecked irises of Solo’s deep-set hazel eyes. There was precious little of Han’s usual crazy bravado there now. And that, above all, frightened her.
She wanted to make him brave again, and by extension, herself.
Leia pursed and gently pressed her lips to the left edge of Han’s helmet’s glass, low down, near the neck seal, yet high enough for him to glimpse if he wished. When she withdrew, there remained the slightly smudged opaque print of her lipstick on the otherwise pristine exterior surface of the glass. Leia felt a blush rise to her cheeks, absently wondering how that had looked from inside. 
However, Han’s jaw dropped in pleasant surprise.
The Princess had extended a token of her favor to her champion.
Chewbacca woofed his approval as an aside, grinning toothily at the not-quite-a-couple.
Leia gave Han her most brilliant smile and he returned it, a crooked flash of gleaming white that made her breath catch, and heart pound. Han straightened, puffing his chest out, squaring broad shoulders in a determined set, the light finally reaching his eyes.
“For luck,” Leia added huskily.
“I know, “ Han murmured.
