Personal headcanon about the "you picked the wrong dellamorte" line, I don't think illario actually likes rook outside the context of them being someone close to lucanis. Like rook on their own isn't much to him, but when they meet it's yet another person talking about his cousin (why isn't he good enough for whatever job they're hiring for?) and on top of that they somehow bring him back from the dead (another whole can of worms for illario). Now he starts turning on the charm, but whether he's actually interested or this is just one more thing his cousin has that he doesn't and it gets under his skin, who knows. Either way, rook ignores illario, the guy who lives off his charm, and is instead interested in the guy who's never even dated before and thinks giving someone a knife is how to flirt. Infuriating

NO THANK YOU !! i am genuinely sorry if i have ever implied illario is into rook like i see some takes about it and unless it like ties into your rook's personal backstory i don't seriously think he's romantically jealous. at all. my enjoyment of that line stems from illario's pathological need to make it about himself and not see his strengths but what lucanis has, and therefore what he doesn't. he's annoyed enough to try and goad you in the middle of a fight about the 'wrong' dellamorte and completely blind to the fact that the venatori are at best, a stupid fucking alliance, and at worst, a cult that will devour the crows from the inside out and illario would have been the one to give them the keys. he sees lucanis make allies, needs his own, and instead of charming the other talons/houses as he should, he (probably spitefully) picks the venatori. or maybe he just thought it would be easier. ugh he makes me want to telekenetically throw him around

btw btw i think gallifrey has incredibly rich literary traditions. i think many of their stories are epic-length because time lords just have so fucking long to write their life's work. and i think courtly romance is a wildly popular genre for similar reasons to why it was popular in medieval europe, because it features an intensity of emotion that doesn't reflect their controlled and appearance-focused daily lives

there's smth really interesting abt how much ppl like to talk abt dean and cas and destiel trying to "escape the narrative" when that's kind of sam's whole thing but because he does it in a way that contradicts dean and dean doesn't like, he's wrong for it. like at his core, he is constantly striving for safety away from the violent environment he grew up in but that doesn't mean he's seeking to better the world or even his family. he wants to leave. he constantly wants to leave, it's a reoccurring action of his. when he gets the opportunity, he leaves.

and like yeah the show's moral framework affects this bc it insists that embracing hunting is making the world better bc hunting makes everyone safer so that just makes sam's desire to escape worse by the show's standards bc not only is he trying to leave hunting, leaving hunting means he stops making the world better. but if we don't accept that, his desire to just get out is just not something that's fun to root for because domesticity and suburbia are something for other people, heroes shouldn't exist there, they should be doing something. and so people want him to either accept the show's (and dean's) perspective that hunting is the "better" or do something to change the structure of their family and hunting in general. and the thing is that he does try but because it's antithetical to the show's party line he's not actually allowed to do it and his attempts are framed as wrong, misguided, overbearing, etc. and dropped to get him back on dean's side, enabling and participating in the same violence as everyone else.

What do you see as the main difference between Sulla and Pompey s relationship and Sulla and Crassus' relationship?

favoritism, resentment, and debt, which are all different types of power. its a weird triangle of something.

sulla and pompey go from favoritism to resentment in that pivot from sulla coercing pompey into a familial tie (marriage to his step daughter) and then the later resentment (plut. pomp. 14), with the denial of the triumph, and then pompey coming in with the rising sun), concluded with sulla cutting pompey out of his will and pompey giving sulla an honorable funeral anyway (plut. pomp. 15) obligations fulfilled, etc. its almost like getting the last word in a fight. congrats on your stalemate with a dead man!

then there's crassus, where there's already friction from the start, from BEFORE the start: he doesn't get along with metellus pius (plut. crass. 6) and oh boy if that isn't a sign of things to come, I don't know what is. the first task sulla gives to him has a sour note to it (plut. crass. 6) that's going to haunt the rest of this narrative, but crassus secures victory for sulla (battle of the colline gate) in a way that would put sulla in a specific kind of intolerable debt to him, but no victory kiss for you baby, he's going to hate you for it!

sulla has the upper hand over crassus, but pompey has enough ground that sulla's never quite able to fully cut pompey out the way he did crassus.
