While the original Jumanji certainly doesn’t qualify as a cinematic classic, it definitely holds a special place in family film history due to the participation of screen and comedy legend, Robin Williams. So, it was a mild surprise when Sony Pictures announced their intention to make a sequel to the 1990’s hit. The ears of the industry perked up when it was revealed that the studio had secured Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson (Furious 7), Kevin Hart (Central Intelligence), Jack Black (Goosebumps), and Karen Gillian (Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2), in the lead roles.

The casting signaled a change of direction, despite the project being touted as a direct sequel and now we have a full understanding of the new take on the action-comedy. Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle is updating the board game found in the original and changing it to a video game for the modern age. Essentially the sequel will be a satire on gamer and cyber culture. The sequel follows four teenagers who are transported inside of the Jumanji video game and find themselves in the bodies of various avatars, all played by the leads.

It looks as if the movie is set up to stand on its own, however it’s hard to not imagine that there will be Easter eggs for fans of the original scattered throughout the jungle. It also should be noted that this is another pairing of The Rock and Hart after hosting the MTV Movie Awards and starring in Central Intelligence. The Rock is coming off of one of his biggest box-office disappointments with Baywatch, while Hart has been dealing with a bevy of his own personal problems. So, it will be interesting to see if their box-office power is still strong, or if the cookie-cutter family-approved formula for Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle, will wear thin with moviegoers. Official Synopsis:

In a brand new Jumanji adventure, the tables are turned as four teenagers are sucked into Jumanji’s world – pitted against rhinos, black mambas and an endless variety of jungle traps and puzzles. To survive, they’ll play as characters from the game: meek Spencer becomes a braveexplorer (Dwayne Johnson); hulky jock Fridge becomes a tiny genius (Kevin Hart); It-girl Bethany becomes a bookworm professor (Jack Black); and unathletic Martha becomes an amazonian warrior (Karen Gillan). To beat the game and return to the real world with their lives, they’ll have to start seeing things in an entirely different way.

Still undecided? Then you will have to wait until December 20th, 2017 when Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle opens.

Pernell gives the final verdict on Dungeon Scavenger, the old school dungeon crawler we discussed in Episode 608 from Vidama Software. Chris takes a look at Gladiator Guild Manager: Prologue, a battle sim on Kickstarter through September 11th from Entertainment Forge & GrabTheGames. Finally, Jacob Garner joins with his son Sam to discuss LEGO City Undercover from TT Games & WB Games as well as another look at Wide Awake Pip on iOS & Android from Coral Reef IO.

When I first got the chance to take a look at Gryphon Knight Epic I was interested in the fact that it combined games like Megaman, Ghouls & Ghosts and Lords of Thunder together. Being of the gaming generation that got hooked on Super Ghouls & Ghosts on the SNES, and even the original game in the arcade I knew I wanted to give it a try. Having tried an early Alpha version of the game this is where I say that this is a Kickstarter game worth backing.

In Gryphon Knight Epic you play the role of Sir Oliver riding your loyal Griffin Aquila on an adventure described as a “Shmup” which is basically a shoot’ em up, exploration and duel game. On my first try it initially feels like Ghouls & Ghosts mixed with R-Type, which caught my attention straight away. Adding to the side scrolling style of gameplay though Sir Oliver can move in more directions when given the chance meaning it’s not just a case of moving left or right, giving the feeling of a more diverse world where you can even move backwards to pick off enemies you’ve missed.

One thing I did notice about Gryphon Knight Epic is just how hard it is, but a challenge is a good thing. There is a retro feel to the game, as is always the case with 2D scrollers but that is part of the charm really. Fighting your way to the end of the level to then battle the end of level boss is something that sometimes feels lacking in the modern games but Gryphon Knight Epic confidently brings the bosses back, and they are hard to beat. Maybe it’s the retro fan in me, but to have a game like this where it’s not just about the look, but more about the gameplay is something that is often lacking. Gryphon Knight Epic feels like a game that isn’t really forcing the retro feel, it’s just trying to be a scrolling shoot’ em up featuring a knight riding a Griffin.

Now comes the important bit, having played the early version of the game and liking what I see, it’s time to go look at the Kickstarter page and consider donating to the project so that Gryphon Knight Epic can become a full game. If you need to know exactly what you will be paying for, the answers are on the Kickstarter page and there are also some incentives for willing investers. Also be sure to vote on the games Greenlight page to get it onto Steam, every little helps.

From the alpha version I’ve played Gryphon Knight Epic is a fun game that doesn’t shy away from being a true retro game where the real focus is fun. It is a challenge and can be frustrating at times but more importantly it’s fun and has potential to be a good game, it just needs the funding. Kickstarter is made to highlight projects like this and I hope Gryphon Knight Epic does reach its targets. I’ll be keeping an eye on this one. At the time of writing there are 25 days to go and the signs are looking good, so fingers crossed for this one.
