New Jersey State Tree & State Flower
The New Jersey State Flower: Viola is a genus of flowering plants in the Viola family Violaceae, commonly known as violet or common meadow violet. The formal name for this flower is Viola sororia, but it is popularly known as the Common Meadow Violet available at Berlin Blossom Shoppe, which attributes to it the honorable position of being the state flower of New Jersey. Scientifically recognized as the Rosa Virginia, this prettily framed yet tenacious blossom earned the title of official state flower five years before the floral emblem boom of 1971.

Deep Cut Gardens
Picture it: July of 2023. When I heard there was a garden formerly owned by a Mafia boss, my interest was piqued. When I found out its name was a pun, I knew I had to see the place for myself.
Located down in Middletown Township, Deep Cut Gardens’ claim to fame is former owner Vito Genovese, who had the gardens built to resemble his native Naples. It’s now in the care of the Monmouth County Park System, who’ve dedicated the grounds to the enrichment of their local horticultural enthusiast population. They, incidentally, have a more robust history of the property on their website.
The Rose Parterre and Rose Pergola.
The grounds sport a koi pond, a greenhouse, a number of walking paths, a pergola, and a parterre that looks straight out of a castle’s courtyard. I may have had to Google what a “parterre” is, but now I’ll look super cultured when I whip that one out at my next social gathering. Just don’t ask me how it’s pronounced…
A creature I’ve only ever seen on my island in Animal Crossing: New Horizons came to greet me straight away. This gorgeous, gorgeous girl is the eastern tiger swallowtail. (How do I know she’s a girl? Those stunning blue spots only appear on the females of the species!) I never knew they lived here in Jersey. Turns out they can be found all over the eastern half of the United States! She’s an East Coast girly.
A fairy house… or a gnome home.
The walking trails will eventually take you to a set of stairs lined with the most whimsical trees I’ve ever seen; the spot looked like a fairytale and I fully expected to get whisked away by pixies. I wish I’d gotten more photos, but there were not one but two separate wedding/engagement photoshoots going on that I was trying not to photobomb!
If you manage to outmaneuver the pixies and get to the bottom of the stairs, you’ll reach the pergola and parterre.
The greenhouse was similarly charming, and had more greenery of the “indoor plant” variety. Apparently, the gardens also host a seed exchange station – like a “little free library” but for plant seeds instead of books, which is an idea so adorable that it makes me wanna cry.
Deep Cut Gardens was an absolutely stunning spot that certainly justifies all the simultaneous photoshoots. It’d be a fun place to check out if you’re a gardener, if you’re interested in local history, or if you’re a fan of Mafia dramas. (Actually, I think you’re legally required to be a fan of The Sopranos if you live in New Jersey…)
If you’re lucky, maybe you’ll even make a few insect friends like I did.
- Aley ❤️

Past!New York drawing cuz why not 🤷🏽
Headcanons about the silly under the cut! (CW/TW: England being a bitch as per usual)
An absolute sweetheart
Loves making flower crowns for the other colonies
Though as he got older he slowly stopped making them cuz England would always tell him to "man up!" or "grow up!" and tell him "how stupid it was for a man to love flowers"
didn't speak fluent English until he was around 10 years old.
basically glued to Mass and Connecticut
would sometimes get into trouble with NJ (like they would trip a soldier or do the usual kids messing around stuff)
(creds to @stawpny for this hc !!): lil York would often "collectsteal" random things and objects to show Mass and the others at the end of the day.
genuinely thought (still sometimes thinks) that everything that England did to him was okay. He didn't like it, but he thought that that's just how it was supposed to be and England definitely took advantage of that knowledge.

Plant Profile: Red Maple - Acer rubrum
If you live in America you've probably seen a red maple before, this versatile little beast is one of the most ecologically widespread and common tree species in the east.
Let's start with the name: Why is it called Red Maple? The name refers to the beautiful ruby red spring buds/flowers (Image 1: Red Maple swamp West Milford, NJ) in addition to the vibrant fall colors. Suburbanites often confuse 'Japanese' maples as "red maples" due to the leaf hue but unlike that cultivated variety, Acer rubrum has green leaves and will preform very differently, angry clients sometimes 'buy the wrong tree' then make it YOUR problem.
Red maples are very variable within their geographic range, in some forests they can occupy a dominant understory position, some they are dry mountain dwellers, while in others they are niche successional wetland species but in most cases they exist as a 'short' lived tree usually dying before 100 years of age (Image 2: 150 year old specimen, Chester County, PA). These phenological differences can be genetic quirks of an isolated population or just occupying an available place.
Quick description on how to identify: Red maples are a fast growing deciduous tree species usually free of branches for about half it's height (reaching around a hundred feet). The bark itself is usually a smooth darker grey when young becoming lighter, randomly furrowed, ridged and scaly at maturity, in wetland environments it's not uncommon to see a lime green lichen present on its bark (Image 6). Twigs are usually purplish with redder new growth (Image 4). Buds and flowers are usually fully red (Image 3) and samaras (cute helicopter seeds) have red and green tints and are quite small compared to other American maples. These trees are usually unisexual (flowers are male or female, some pollinated female flowers image 3) though some have both sexes on the same tree and have been known to change genders. The leaf of a red maple (image 5) is pretty variable in proportions but has 3 very distinct lobes (sometimes 5 lobes) and very toothy, opposite placement and will create the most vibrant red color in fall fading slowly to yellow sometimes.
Within its native range red maple has a few 'subspecies' (Swamp red maple var. drummondii whose leaf has hairy undersides and Carolina red maple var trilobum which has a smaller 3 lobed leaf) but not many look alikes of other species. Mountain maple (Acer spicatum) has similar leaves but is a shrub present in the Appalachias and anywhere north of New York. Amur maple is also similar but this is usually restricted to gardens and has a proportionally long leaf.
The native range of red maple encompasses the entire Eastern United States with a southwestern limits in East Texas and a northwestern limit in Minnesota extending eastward with a northern limit in Newfoundland. I've personally seen this tree at both limits of its range (the Everglades and Quebec) and the further south one goes the more restricted to swamps and streams, conversely the further north the less restricted to wetlands it is (Image above: Red Maple on right in Catskills Mountains).
Habitat: Red maple is relatively dominant in New England-Mid Atlantic Wetlands, every tree you see with green lichen is a red maple in the image above (Great Swamp,NJ). The key for red maple seedling germination is soil moisture, which is why the further north one goes the more common it is to find. Naturally Red Maple is not meant to be as dominate as it is, I often state colonialism influenced our modern forest cover in distinct ways. Fire suppression, Low lumber value, and Clear Cut Disturbance has allowed the tree to thrive. Early successional (fast growth/high seeding) and Late successional habits (shade tolerance) makes Red Maple a perfect candidate for 'domination'. This may seem like a looming biodiversity threat when in reality the tree regenerates forest loss extremely well, it's short lifespan and weak wood/shallow root system often allows hardier trees (in non-wetland conditions) to readily take over after several decades. Each image (above and below) I'm showing with near total Red Maple coverage was once farmland less than a century prior giving way to variable forest. Additionally Red maples are important food sources for early pollinators and it's seeds are probably one of the top early summer food sources for squirrels.
Future trends: It is unknown what the future holds for Red Maples, With climate change increasing heavy precipitation events and late spring droughts may impact seedling success, though the tree is hardy in floods and dry periods. The Image above actually just experienced a large wildfire (the image is 6 month before burn) which will likely lead to a replacement with more fire tolerant species. Red Maples have thin bark and die easily when facing predation (Beaver herbivory visible mid-left above) and disturbances. On a positive note, according to a 2022 Boston University study warming trends are increasing the nutritional content (Nitrogen, Phosphorus, etc. concentrations) of its foliage which may be good for forest soil health.
Direct Uses: Red maple is considered a 'soft' maple and is often not used for much aside from veneer. Red maples have concentrated forms of tannin and the bark can potentially be used to make dyes though I have not tried this. Of direct human consumption occasionally people will use this species to derive syrup though unlike sugar maples they have a relatively short harvest period. The leaves are also toxic fodder for equine species (and humans), so don't use this in silvopasture!
Growing Red Maple: Thousands of red maple seedlings usually take over my beds and die within the year, occasionally I'll take a sapling for my personal nursery. I've found that the tree performs extremely well in partial shade and has the potential to grow 2' a year once established. Once mature, not much will survive around the trunk due to it's shallow roots.
Condition and Landscaping: Red Maple is a catch-22 in landscaping: it grows fast, has great color, it can thrive in bad conditions like flooding, droughts, sidewalks, pollution, disease and major damage.... unfortunately they tend to carry these marks and branches can break easily. Many cities use red maple cultivars and hybrids guaranteed to have decent form, it's shallow roots prevent weed (and grass) growth around the trunk. European and west coast cities utilize a hybrid between silver and red maple (Acer x freemanii) as a common hardy street tree. There are two cultivars I will recommend: 'Brandywine' which has dense foliage and 'October Glory' which has deep red fall colors and seeds
Restoration performance: Red Maple makes an excellent forest edge species allowing its vibrant fall color to be fully enjoyed and producing dense foliage to protect the inner woods from drying sunlight (sapling in field above from the Poconos). They're best utilized in wetland restoration projects as they are quite prolific and survive long periods of standing water.
So this was my quick piece on maybe our most common tree, if you're in New England/the Mid-Atlantic in mid winter to spring look up for the characteristic red buds, they're waiting for the right day length to bloom!

I had such an incredible time at Back to the Future: The Musical this past Saturday! I decided a couple of weeks ago on a much-needed solo adventure when I was able to score tickets in the eighth row for a good price!
Coming from the Pittsburgh area, it’s about 6 hours’ drive to the Big Apple. I left at 4 AM and followed the sun across Pennsylvania, sneaking a snapshot when the fog broke long enough (it was so foggy!).
There was also some lovely flora and fauna amidst the fog at the rest stops, particularly at the PA-NJ border.
Now, I have been to NYC three times before this in 2007, 2008, and 2009. Coming back felt like the most special and most normal thing at the same time. I missed it! While I could never live in a city, I enjoyed taking in the awe of the big buildings and novelties Times Square had to offer a couple of hours before my show (I should have went back for that Reese’s candle, but I def had NY Cheesecake for dinner).
Now the show? Amazing. Spoilers below the cut.
First off, let me assure you that whatever seat you have, you will hear the show. I’m pretty sure my hearing was a tad damaged from the sonic booms and big chorus numbers, and I had a decent headache from it, so just be warned that it was a bit louder than anticipated. If you’re in the last row of the mezzanine, you’ll hear it all, I promise!
Some of my favorite things about the performance:
Hugh Coles makes it look like they plucked George McFly straight out of the film. He was incredible and by far the perfect embodiment of his character. So if you’re a big George fan, this is your show! If you’re not, he will make you fall in love with him! Incredible!
Roger Bart makes a joke about going to 2020 and there is no disease and a few people really cackled at that, and he broke character to look at someone and say thank you. Then, for probably 45 seconds, he broke character laughing with us over it, and Casey (Marty) is just standing there looking perfectly confused without cracking. It was a delightful way to start the second half!
Super enjoyed that when Marty meets Doc and is first trying to convince him to come see the DeLorean, Doc sees him go right for the flashlights in a drawer he couldn’t possibly know they were in, making him realize this kid might be who he says he is. I don’t know why that little detail stuck out to me as so significant, but it did. It was so satisfying from a storytelling perspective.
I loved George and Marty’s number in the backyard. We don’t get to see a lot of Marty really positively connecting with his dad in the movie unless it’s serving the “saving himself from non-existence” plot. I loved the genuine father-son feel of Marty dancing and George trying to copy him and Marty celebrating him for it. That felt good. One of those things theater is really good at capturing!
They filled the auditorium with bubbles during the Enchantment Under the Sea Dance and OH, talk about immersive atmosphere. Loved seeing everyone reach up to pop at least one bubble, like we were accepting some kind of offering. So fun!
Jennifer’s UNCLE HUEY. NICE.
The stage changes to the story were acceptable and believable. I almost didn’t realize the whole skateboard chase didn’t happen til the scene before the dance in the diner. Good job of keeping things succinct by combining various scenes and keeping the pace smooth!
This is nothing, but I saw a fake flower go flying off a bouquet and almost immediately one of the Texaco guys just tucked it in his rag when his staging brought him close enough during the number and kept going. I love seeing how discreetly the “oops” gets fixed on-stage.
After the show, I was out back to have my playbill signed by the cast when BOB GALE walked within a foot of me. I froze. I wasn’t sure. It has been my goal to ask this man the month and day of Doc Brown’s birthday for years and I BLEW IT. But he was quietly trying to get out of there I think. Someone got a quick photo with him before he disappeared in Times Square and UGHHH I can’t believe he was RIGHT THERE. (My friend who went to the 8 PM show said Alan Silvestri was there! How cool is this??)
My playbill was signed by all of the cast minus Roger Bart. He did not leave the theater that any of us saw. I did get to catch a photo with Mayor Goldie Wilson on his way back in, though!
I also got to meet up briefly with @bri-to-the-future and give her a 60s Doc I crocheted for her! How fortuitous that we got to see the show on the same day and meet face-to-face!
And then it started raining, my hotel didn’t get my reservation, and I was so mad that I just drove the six hours home (do not recommend). 🙃
It was certainly an adventure! I’m so glad I finally got to see it in-person, and I definitely recommend it! Now I can officially talk musical! 🎵 🎶

Outer World — Who Does the Music Love? (HHBTM)
“Outer World” has a powerful momentum, bass grinding, synths popping, guitars clanging, as Tracy Wilson’s singing surges over it. “I love the music,” she declares repeatedly, joy bubbling out of every syllable, until she asks, “Who does the music love?” It’s a hands-in-the-air, hips-on-a-swivel psychedelic bop along the lines of Os Mutantes’ “Bat Macumba,” and the best song on Outer World’s debut EP. Though, not by much, this is groovy, exuberant stuff.
It starts with the bubbly, bouncy, woo-woo space-shot of “The Drum The Beat,” a cut that hops up and down like the B-52s and buzzes and hums like switched on Stereolab. “Flower Gunpowder” runs slower, but still buoyantly, a hard, slapping beat pushing witchy new age mysticism through a Peter Max lens. It is brightly colored, playful and vibrating with spirit. “Forms of Knowing” again abuts Stereolab’s sonic world, an underlying drone of organ connecting airy vocals and puncturing, rackety percussion. “Loteria,” the one track you might not want to dance to, is a dreamlike astral projection with interleaved vocals and whooshing atmospherics.
It's all just a gas that you might be surprised about the backstory, which involves coming back from considerable adversity. In the 1990s, Tracy Wilson was the big brassy vocalist for the NJ hardcore band Dahlia Seed. Later, she served that same outsized role with the more lyrical Positive No, this time with Kenneth Close on guitar. Sadly, Wilson caught a bad case of long COVID, which destroyed her lung capacity and diminished her outsized vocal presence. Outer World grew out of Close and Wilson working with her post-pandemic voice, not as powerful now but still stirring. It’s a testament to perseverance and struggling to do what you most value, even when your body isn’t cooperating, and it makes Wilson’s declaration, “I love the music/Who does the music love?” even more triumphant. Wilson may not be as loud as she was, but she’s a riveting presence all the same.

Inside the Van Ness house... It's very cool; there is a well inside of it. I've never seen that before. Then on the outside with the stone siding you can see a faint square where a large old window was covered up for some reason.
After unjustly getting kicked off the farm by the f*cking Cedar Grove Historical Society, my former boss started his own nonprofit called Friends of Van Ness to buy this house from the township and restore it. The house is on NJ's list of top 10 most endangered historic sights. The kickoff fundraiser was yesterday and we raised $4,200 selling cutting boards, spring flower bulbs, t shirts, and baked goods. We are also going to continue the native plant sales, though unfortunately it's a bit too late to start all over and create a new farm.

i just dreamt up a crazy horror movie trailer
it opened with this very Americana beach town (kind of like Ocean Grove NJ) and there was a kids choir + marching band playing/ singing this really cockeyed song and the camera did like a Wes Anderson style zoom where it zooms to a circle as if you were looking through binoculars and there was this multi-story tent building and up at the top this woman started singing a solo out the window. It also had a very Wes Anderson-ish color scheme (the tag line was something like "Wes Anderson did horror) and the trailer cuts from this song to a middle aged waitress leaving out the back of a dinner and this nervous man waiting out back for her with what looks like a bouquet of flowers. she knows this guy, he's someone everyone in town knows, but as she approaches him she realizes he's holding a bunch of bloody crowbars and she asks him why her and he said something like "you've got a face i can't forget." trailer cuts to a text card saying something about how an Irish immigrant priest is the only one who can save the town and it shows a window of a house reflecting the outside and the sky is all red and there's a telephone pole being reflected in it that briefly flashes to look like a cross. inside the house is Christmas time and this Irish character is walking around his home (it nightcap actually been an apartment) and this white goat is standing just out of his sight in a shadowy corner and then the camera cuts to the Christmas tree and him opening a present that turns out to be a machete with a bit of chainmail hanging off the handle that turns out to have been the coif of Joan of Arc. That's all I remember

"No kidding?" A twin, that's interesting. It was one thing to have a sibling, but a whole other person that existed with your face and an entirely different personality of their own was another. That's amazing, she thinks. It must be quite the experience. "Vash and Knives…" she mumbles, eyes scanning the flowerbed for whatever weeds were left. Hardly any, as she and Vash had made quick work of them already though her hands moved to clip the remaining few that she could see and that were pointed out to her. "Oh, I can handle grumpy. Besides, he's technically the other half of you, he'll probably like me too!" a cheeky grin eases its way, followed by laughter soon after.
Aerith carefully steps over the flowers to get those last bunch of weeds that Vash points out to her, and once they're cut she balls up her fist into a triumphant fist pump. "Oh yeah? Sounds like a good guy! Reminds me of a friend of my own." Livio, that is. Carefully, she makes her way back to Vash and her basket on the ground before heaving a sigh of relief. The weeding was done for the season, and now she could focus more on their conversation! "Well, I figure that's how most relationships work, don't they? Your partner's supposed to be your best friend first."
Finally, she starts packing away the weeds along with her garden shears and settles into crouching down again into her comfortable position. "Jeez…just the way you talk about him, you're like a lovesick puppy. It's cute!" Chin in hand, Aerith looks thoroughly amused at Vash's goofy expression. It's funny how sometimes the less you say about a person could also paint the clearest picture.
And finally, it comes time to talk about herself, to which she takes a deep breath, puffs out her cheeks, and slowly blows out air like she's some sort of deflated balloon. Where did she even begin with that? "I've got a couple of friends!" She straightens up and counts them off one by one on each finger, "There's Yor, really sweet but a bit heavy-handed. NJ, who I used to live with but then I moved out, she's kinda on the wild side. Aaaaand Eiden! Who I just met not too long ago. Really sweet guy who has a pet rooster which I think is super cool. Really fun to talk to, too."
As for her love life, well, that's a little bit more difficult to talk about and there's definitely some hesitation before she continues on. "My ex shows up sometimes," she shrugs. "It's complicated. He kinda…died and he's very much not dead when I see him here." Talking about Zack was still kind of awkward for her, but not really. She just didn't like people feeling like they had to feel bad for her. "Had a guy I kinda liked a while back. Real princely type, fluffy hair, and soft eyes…but he left! So, that's that. I'm not really seeing anyone right now. I'm just kinda cruising along and seeing what happens, y'know?" She laughs it off as best as she can. "It's a little hard these days to meet people, but when I meet someone good then I try to hold on."
★ --;; It's a comfort Vash hadn't known he'd needed to hear until it's said, regardless of whether or not he had been the one to pose the question. It's a guilt that's been eating at him, walking hand in hand with that fear of second losses; that being selfish like this isn't something he deserves. He's spent a great deal of his long life that way-- not believing that he deserved those sorts of wants, that someone like him wasn't worthy of them. It's gotten better with time, though at a snail's pace, and although this island has its share of blessings it also brought with it new forms of those old hurts. Without knowing it Aerith has managed to take at least some of the weight off of his shoulders after only having known one another for hardly more than a handful of minutes, and for that he's grateful.
When he smiles this time it's a bit more genuine that its predecessor, softer around the edges. He takes the next batch of leafy offenders as they're handed to him, the patch quickly becoming pristine beneath practiced hands. "I'll have to apologize for stealing you away, then. I'm sure they'll be too sleepy to complain that much soon enough, though." The temperatures at night these days only continues to creep lower with the steady plodding of the year; soon enough their final blooms would return to the soil.
"I'm a twin," he says simply, shrugging. Any remaining weeds are quickly caught by sharp eyes, though he doesn't hold the sheers in his hands. Soon enough they'll be gone, too. "Me n' Knives. We, uh. Didn't get along, for a real long time." Which certainly is one way of putting it-- but he's not about to dump his entire convoluted history with Knives on a complete stranger. "But we're fixing it, now. Sort of." The process is... rocky, at best, but they're still leaps and bounds better than they have been in well over a century and a half, and that definitely counts for something. There's still a smile one his face though, a small laugh as he adds, "Way grumpier than me, though."
Without explanation, he points out the last few, hiding away in a back corner. "As for Livio, he's just about one of the best folks you'll ever meet. Real big mountain of a guy. Looks intimidating, but really he's full a' not much else but marshmallow. Better than me by a long shot, if you want my opinion."
It's the final one that gets him, of all things, a bit bashful. Being with Nick is easy, like a natural extension. Describing it to someone else feels like baring a part of himself that normally stays tucked safely away. Showing through action is one thing-- putting words to it is entirely different. There are a thousand things Vash could say, but he settles for something simple. His voice gives him away, anyway. "Wolfwood is my best friend. S'just relatively recent that's it's been. Um. More than that."
Which is only a half truth, anyway. Their admittance to that feeling had been the only thing 'recent' about it.
Vash snorts.
"I know I'm a blabbermouth, but geez. Your turn, then. Do you have anyone here? 'Sides just the flowers. Friends? Enemies?" Cue dramatic eyebrow wiggle ( never mind how shy he'd been ). "Romantic interests?" Talk about a nosey Nancy.
