What is Easter in Cusco like?
Easter in Cusco stands as a vibrant occasion captivating multitudes of global visitors. The essence of Holy Week intertwines religious fervor with rich cultural traditions, igniting profound displays of faith. For the denizens of Cusco, the days preceding Easter hold profound significance in reaffirming their spiritual commitment.
Throughout the Lenten period, a time of solemn reflection and penance, devout Catholics earnestly prepare for the commemoration of Easter. Time-honored processions and attire, cherished legacies passed down through generations, serve as pillars upholding the sanctity of their beliefs. Herein lies the essence of Easter in Cusco: a convergence of tradition and history, inviting reverence and celebration alike.

How is Easter celebrated in Cusco?
During Easter, numerous churches in Cusco, such as the Cathedral of Cusco, graciously welcome droves of devout pilgrims through their open doors. Amidst the bustling throngs of participants and onlookers, vibrant processions unfurl, imbuing the streets with an aura of unwavering devotion and faith. Thus commences the jubilant festivities.
Embedded within the local folklore is a belief highlighting the purported healing virtues infused into plants, herbs, and roots on Good Friday. Consequently, farmers hailing from every corner of Cuzco converge upon the squares, offering an astounding array of medicinal herbs, perpetuating a tradition steeped in mystique and reverence.
Señor de los Temblores procession
The revered figure of the "Taytacha de los Temblores" or Señor de los Temblores (Lord of the Tremors) draws a substantial portion of the populace. Esteemed as one of the primary processions, it unfolds on Holy Monday, following the blessings conferred on Palm Sunday.
Amidst the bustling thoroughfares and the historic Plaza de Armas in Cusco, a crucified Christ of indigenous lineage is solemnly borne. The apex of this revered event arrives when the Lord of the Tremors bestows his blessings upon the faithful, borne aloft upon the shoulders of devoted porters. Here, amidst this sacred tableau, visitors bear witness to the profound devotion evoked, as thousands of women are moved to tears by the sight of the Andean Jesus.
Palm Sunday
Palm Sunday, heralding the conclusion of Lent, also serves as the inaugural moment of Easter festivities. Devotees gather at dawn to partake in solemn masses, resonating with ceremonial psalms. In Cusco, this occasion is commemorated through the time-honored tradition of blessing palm fronds and intricately woven crosses, adorning the thresholds of homes as protective emblems.

Moreover, Palm Sunday beckons the faithful to the revered Cathedral of Cusco, the city's paramount church. Commencing as early as five in the morning, the Palm Sunday mass unfolds, reverberating with the sacred cadence of the Quechua language.
Holy Monday
Holy Monday ushers in the second day of Holy Week, laden with symbolic significance. The Plaza de Armas in Cusco becomes a focal point where visitors bear witness to the unwavering devotion of the local populace and the throngs of faithful pilgrims who have converged. Amidst this spiritual tapestry, the Archbishop of Cusco presides over the Communion Mass within the Cathedral.
However, the zenith of this day unfolds in the revered procession of the Señor de los Temblores (Lord of the Earthquakes), revered as the Sworn Patron of the city. Bearing witness to this solemn procession is an unparalleled experience, encapsulating centuries of profound faith and unyielding tradition.
Maundy Thursday
On Maundy Thursday, prominent local figures, including the mayor of Cusco, participate in the solemn rites of the Blessed Sacrament during the day's processions. Simultaneously, masses are held in every church across the city, echoing with reverence and devotion.
In a longstanding tradition, the bishop of Cusco Holidays undertakes the ceremonial act of washing the feet, symbolizing humility and service, typically performed on twelve beggars. While this custom persists, it has evolved to include twelve respected elders in modern times. Additionally, it is customary for worshippers to embark on a nocturnal pilgrimage, visiting seven churches throughout the evening hours.
Good Friday
On Good Friday, the custom of serving twelve dishes symbolizing the twelve disciples of Christ is a prominent tradition. In the Sayllapata district of the province of Paucartambo, for instance, locals typically prepare soups using Andean ingredients. Whether it's the renowned k'irku soup, crafted from tarwi, cheese, milk, and eggs, or a hearty broth featuring whole chicken eggs, each dish holds deep cultural significance.
Similar to many predominantly Catholic communities, the consumption of red meat is avoided on Good Friday. In Cusco, culinary creations showcase indigenous ingredients like potatoes, ollucos, corn, and wheat. Street vendors offer these staples alongside regional delicacies such as steamed trout and sautéed cod.

Easter Sunday
Easter Sunday commences with Mass as early as 7 am, marking the holiest day for believers as it symbolizes the resurrection of Jesus.
In Cusco, Easter Sunday is a vibrant spectacle. Alongside the masses held in the city's churches, you'll witness processions featuring the image of the risen Christ. The streets bustle with activity, offering a plethora of typical foods on every corner. Whether or not you hold religious beliefs, Holy Week Easter 2024 in Cusco promises to be an enriching and lively experience worth exploring.
