Quanto a lei, mi dimenticherà.

A woman’s journey through her abusive early childhood to then enduring more cruelty and loss in a charity institution. Her fierce challenge against the abuse she experienced and witnessed, class structures, poverty, social order and Christianity are some of themes that shape a radical feminist of her time. Not accepting her life as it was and wanting more and actively pursuing and questioning and keeping her faith leads her to Thornfield Hall where love and more challenges await.

. . . . . . #janeyre #charlottebronte #vida #desafios #familia #amizade #classicliterature #literaturaclassica #currerbell (à Sebo do Portuga) https://www.instagram.com/p/CFctpjTDQiH/?igshid=1un5vlfp7eh04

I was going to save this post because I thought it would have been more apt on International Women’s Day. That was when I came to the realisation that we can’t just have one day to celebrate all the amazing women in History, who have broken down barriers with the hopes that one day, women would be seen as equal in status to men.
One person is Charlotte Brontë who, alongside her sisters Anne and Emily, wrote and published amazing novels which challenged the social norms of the Victorian period.
Charlotte’s most inspiring quality was her resilience; refusing to let the misogynistic society take away her dreams.
In the 1800’s, women were unable to publish their works and therefore, the Brontë sisters printed their work under male pseudonyms. Charlotte, Emily and Anne Brontë became Currer, Ellis and Acton Bell.
Brontë makes reference to the repressive society and condemns the ideals through her female protagonist Jane as well as in Mr Rochester’s wife, Bertha.
For those of you who haven’t read ‘Jane Eyre’ before, Bertha was the ‘woman who lived in the attic’ who was driven mad by the illiberal, domineering attitudes of society.
The fact that Brontë was able to produce such a work was incredible and we, as readers, can sense her frustration and anger within the novel- highlighting how cruel society was.
The beautiful aspect of Brontë’s writing isn’t the fact that she unveils how unfair society was for women, but also for men. She looks at the toxic atmosphere and how it affected men too- detailing the struggles that Mr Rochester faced: being in a loveless marriage, being used by Blanche Ingram as a stepping stool in society and not being able to marry the person he loved because of their class differences.
In my eyes, Brontë conveys the true meaning of feminism: not wanting to infer that one sex is inferior or superior, just stating that we are all equal.
This brings me to my question: who is your inspiration? And what does feminism mean to you?
