Fortunate Son- Hack 4

In 1969, rock band Creedence Clearwater released the song ‘Fortunate Son’ in their album “Willy and the Poor Boys,” seemingly as a protest to the involvement of America in the Vietnam war- more specifically who exactly were being sent to fight (as opposed to those who weren’t being sent). During these times, it became noticeable that the young men of enlistment age that were born or married into wealthy families were able to buy their way out of the war (being diagnosed with some medical condition) or receiving a high-up position in the military. The lyrics “Some folks are born, silver spoon in hand/ Lord don’t they help themselves, y’all” seems to openly resent aforementioned men who have been lucky to avoid the war and stay on the safety of American soil. For the majority of the men that weren’t born into a wealthy family, the story was different, and war could be easily seen in the near future for many- a bitter reality reflected in the chorus “It ain’t me, it ain’t me, I ain’t no fortunate son, no, no, no.” While this song is against the American involvement in the Vietnam war, it focused more on the discriminatory way in which the unfortunate sons were not given the same chances to avoid the war.
