Our landing at Heathrow was so easy, getting through customs etc a breeze and the car hire mob amazing. Ended up in a brand new SUV with instruments we have never seen before. Once driving though we found traffic to be a nightmare. Took us two hours to drive what should have taken 45 minutes.
Arriving at our hotel a tad on the painful side however. Once there our room was clean and on the ground floor. Straight to the bar only to find out it is the “pub with no beer” having been taken over by muslims brothers. Rhondda not happy so an early night. Further agony caused by the only television on offer was watching the Indian Super League cricket. Now Allan not happy.
Wednesday however brightened us up greatly when we visited the city of Christchurch where we did a beautiful walk along garden paths and the seashore prior to doing the main drag and visiting the local Priory. This place is a living museum and we could have stayed for hours just reading the different plaques.
Back on the road we drove through to the Phelips Arms in Crewkerne where the food was great. The floor however had a slight lean and getting up during the night meant one had to put on the foot brakes to avoid running away from the bathroom.
The place also introduced us to electric showers (apparently the new must have in England) which trust me are nothing but shite. They control your water temperature and also the pressure. Never, never consider one for your own use. The room heating was okay but I think in the bathroom non-existent. I dashed to the bathroom when I heard a mighty scream only to discover Rhondda had sat on a very cold seat.
The surrounding area is beautiful and our drives through narrow lanes and picturesque villages everything we wanted. We have set the nav man on Eco and every now and again it does an unneeded detour that is making the drive a lot of fun. Did at one time though see us do three laps of a round about. So confusing.
Today we drove through a lot of the coastal region adding up dropped into Exetor where Rhondda had found the “Underground Passages”, a water system dating back to the 1100s. Amazing to see these tunnels created solely for the purpose of providing running water to the church and community.
These pipes were made of lead, which we all knows kills you, but no one cared about dying of lead poisoning as the majority of people were dying in early 30’s anyway. The city itself is windy and cold but like most English cities has a mix of old and new.
Our touring today ending up in a great English pub in Menhenion located in the high lands. We are currently sitting near a raging fire with a cold beer with a lot of locals. This is what it is all about.

Tarleton Q&A
Courtesy of the Boston Garrison Facebook page:
Thanks to Will C (Member of the Carolinas Militia Company, former Park Guide at Cowpens National Battlefield, and current Park Ranger at the Overmountain Victory National Historic Trail) for today's post.
Q1. Banastre Tarleton joined the British Dragoons at a very young age, and was able to rise through the ranks with rapid speed. What would you attribute his ability to gain such quick promotion to? It clearly was more than just knowing the right people. A1. Banastre Tarleton was really just THAT good at being a cavalryman. He was young, athletic, aggressive, and what we would describe as an adrenaline junkie. He was also obsessed with competition; anything where he could defeat an opponent. This applied to sports such as horse-racing and cricket, as well as womanizing and trying to seduce the mistresses of fellow officers. Some historians have even speculated that Tarleton had a gambling addiction that he referred to in some family letters as “my cursed itch for play.” This gambling behavior is further evidenced by his high gaming tabs at clubs back in London that required payment even while he was serving in North America. I believe Tarleton saw combat victories as a way to show he was better than the enemy, and saw merit-based promotions as a way to show he was better than his fellow officers. It’s this ability on the battlefield and dogged pursuit of victory that brought him success on most battlefields and the attention of army leaders.
Q2. Can you give some brief details on the formation of the British Legion? Was it a creation that Tarleton himself came up with? A2. The British Army was a major supporter of the idea of using Loyalists as soldiers in “Provincial” regiments during the American War. The British Legion was not Tarleton’s idea, but he was selected to be the commander of the cavalry. A “legion” is a regiment that is both cavalry and infantry, so a separate commander was needed for each part while being under the command of the regiment’s commander, Sir William Erskine. The British Legion was the attempt of the British Army to streamline the Provincial system and band together several already existing Loyalist units in the summer of 1778: The 1st Troop of Philadelphia Light Dragoons, the King’s Provincial Troops, the Bucks County Light Dragoons, the Caledonian Volunteers, two companies of The English Volunteers, and the American Volunteers. These regiments had been recruited by local leading community Loyalists or British officers with permission from the army, and were recruited mostly from around New York City and Philadelphia where the British had wintered and maintained a strong presence. Tarleton would command the cavalry portion of the Legion, often in cooperation with other Provincial regiments led by friends of his: The Queen's Rangers under John Simcoe, and the Volunteers of Ireland under Lord Rawdon. Tarleton trained and practiced the cavalry of the Legion so extensively that they were soon nicknamed “Tarleton’s Green Horse” for their leader and their green Provincial jackets. His continual promotions soon brought him to command the infantry of the Legion as well.
Q3. How significant did the capture of Maj. General Charles Lee played in Tarleton's reputation within the British Army? A3. The capture of Continental Major General Charles Lee was a big propaganda victory for the British, and a morale blow for the Americans, but I don’t know how much this event alone boosted Tarleton in the eye of the British leadership or the newspaper readers back home. Charles Lee was one of the few Continental leaders who had previous experience as an officer in the British Army. This made many Americans, including Lee, feel he should be in command of the army instead of George Washington, who had only served as a “Provincial” officer in the French & Indian War. Lee had retired from the British Army and become a planter in Virginia, so he wasn’t turning-coat during the war, but the fact that he turned his back on his former army and joined the rebellion was a well-known and much-hated fact in London. Before Tarleton sailed for America in February 1776, he was reported to have jumped on a chair in a club, drawn his sword, and promised to bring back the head of Lee “the traitor.” Now here is Tarleton as a young officer just 10 months later, part of a raid into New Jersey to White’s Tavern where they find an unguarded, unaware, and undressed General Charles Lee. By itself, the capture of this American general possibly brought some attention to Tarleton, but would have fizzled out if not followed up by Tarleton’s aggressive training and constant raiding on American positions.
Q4. In your opinion, did Tarleton earn the devilish reputation he gained after the Battle of Waxhaws? A4. In my opinion, no, Tarleton did not earn this reputation at all. First, what is the reputation? Banastre “Bloody Ban” Tarleton was a blood-thirsty butcher who denied American soldiers the chance to surrender and would cut them to pieces while they waved a white flag, most notably against Colonel Buford’s Virginians at the Battle of Waxhaws in South Carolina. This gave rise to American battle cries of “Remember the Waxhaws,” “Tarleton’s Quarter,” and “Give them Buford’s Play.” Second, what really happened at the Waxhaws? On May 29, 1780, Tarleton’s Legion were blazing through hot South Carolina roads and choking dust chasing Colonel Abraham Buford and a small force of Continental soldiers who were trying to get away from the large British victory at Charleston, SC. Tarleton is burning out his horses all along the road, and his men are exhausted trying to catch up to Buford. When they finally close in on the Americans in the area known as the Waxhaws, Tarleton sends a messenger to deliver Buford a chance to surrender, bluffs how big the British force is (only 150 cavalry and mounted infantry are still able to keep up), and buy time for his men to catch the Americans. Buford refused the terms of surrender and claimed he would “defend my command to the last,” pulling 420 of his infantry into a field beside the road to cover the retreat of the rest of his Continentals. Tarleton led his men into a charge from the front and side of the Continentals, who held their fire until the Legion was at point-blank range. When the Americans fired their muskets, they didn’t have a chance to reload before the rapidly charging British Legion (cavalry and infantry) were on top of them in hand-to-hand-combat: pockets of Americans fighting, pockets trying to surrender, Colonel Buford fleeing up the road to join the rest of his force. Tarleton’s horse was shot in that close volley, and he was either thrown and knocked unconscious, or trapped beneath the horse. The British Legion thought Tarleton had been killed by the “surrendering” Americans, some of whom were still fighting, and jumped back into the bloody work. Tarleton finally awoke or freed himself, remounted, and took command of his men and stopped the fighting, allowing the surviving Continentals to surrender, even though most of them had already been wounded. Of the 420 Continentals, 113 were killed and 203 wounded. The Legion only lost 5 men killed and 14 wounded, thanks to the single volley of musket fire from the Americans. Third, is the reputation true? There is no arguing that the Battle of Waxhaws was a short, bloody, horrible event. Survivor accounts describe wounded men being bayoneted, the dead being pushed aside to attack the wounded men lying beneath them, and wounded men with nearly a dozen horrific injuries each. But was it ordered by Tarleton? Colonel Buford who fled the field spreads the story that yes, Tarleton ordered the surrendering Americans to be attacked. This is possibly due to an American flag of truce being sent out during the chaotic fighting and unable to find Tarleton (under his horse), and was therefore ignored. When Tarleton regained command, he stopped the fighting, left the wounded men on the battlefield in the care of the local people, and returned to the British army to report a great victory, “I have cut 170 Off’rs and Men to pieces.” Tarleton was a very energetic and aggressive officer who believed a direct attack upon your enemy with a saber and bayonet was the most effective way to defeat them. The British Legion, in the chaos of the battle, when they thought their commander had been killed, not knowing if the Continentals were surrendering or fighting, did bloody work and likely killed some surrendering men. But Tarleton did not plan, order, or allow Buford’s Massacre to happen at the Battle of Waxhaws. Do you hold a commander responsible for the independent actions of his men? Or do you only credit him for events when the reins are firmly in his grip? That decides if Tarleton deserves the “Bloody Ban” reputation.
Q5. After the Revolution, Tarleton served in Parliament, but never held a military command within the British Army. By the time of the Napoleonic Wars, Tarleton was only in his 40's. Do you feel the negative reputation he earned during the American Revolution hurt his ability to gain a command later on in life?
A5. No, Banastre Tarleton came out of the American Revolution with a reputation that helped his image. After capture at Yorktown and return to Britain, he was a 27-year old dashing military officer who had suffered injury at Guilford Courthouse (losing two fingers to a rifle bullet), and had a grand portrait painted by Sir Joshua Reynolds in 1782. While he never commanded troops in battle again, he did stay in the British Army, including service in Portugal and Ireland eventually to the rank of general in 1812. His biggest failing was when he made political enemies of former military friends. In 1784, Tarleton wrote his memoirs of the war with the assistance of long-time mistress Mary Robinson entitled “Campaigns in the Southern Provinces of North America in 1780 and 1781.” In this book, Tarleton referred to himself in the third-person lavishing praise upon his own actions, blaming others for Tarleton’s defeats, and leaving out some details that didn’t fit with his narrative. This drew enough criticism from others that another British officer, Roderick Mackenzie, wrote a series of editorial letters critiquing Tarleton’s book page-by-page, known as “Strictures on Col. Tarleton’s History.” This new wave of opinions was met by another series by George Hanger, Tarleton’s friend and former second-in-command of the British Legion, supporting Tarleton’s writings and poking holes in Mackenzie’s criticisms. This public mud-slinging involved the names of high-ranking officers such as Lord Cornwallis and Lord Rawdon, as well as fallen British heroes like Major Patrick Ferguson. Then you had Tarleton’s political wars. In 1790, Tarleton won a seat in Parliament after a few failed campaigns and quickly chose parties and took sides. He became a vocal advocate for the pro-slavery party in the abolition debates that filled the early 19th century, and firmly supported Charles James Fox. If Tarleton hadn’t drawn enough negative attention yet, there was his personal life. The affair with Mary Robinson started allegedly on a bet when Tarleton seduced her away from the Prince of Wales, who went on to become King George IV. This affair was even more public because Mary was a famous actress and poet. The affair only ended when Tarleton married Susan Bertie, a very wealthy young socialite The only surviving child he fathered was by an anonymous third lover, who according to rumor was the grown daughter of Mary Robinson.
So did Tarleton’s wartime reputation hamstring his post-war career? No, there were plenty of other things to do that.

the boy who has everything// [f.w.]
Summary: Fred and you have been secretly going steady since the end of your fifth year. Now that he and George are making their grand exit to follow their dreams, you are struggling to come up with the perfect parting gift.
Inspired by: https://open.spotify.com/track/37hblhCnC5YzhDQH58Rgpi?si=0EISnLcTRE2mctlIXNObTA
Warnings: Angst, Malfoy!Reader, difficult home life, neglect mentioned
A/N: Currently going through a bit of a writers block that definitely came from school, but I thought something to do with my fav boy would help clear my mind. Just want some input from ya’ll, would you be interested in me starting to take requests? Also, low-key miss having mutuals before I decided to completely start over lol. Also, why does ‘each other’ look wrong to me? Like I am a native English speaker but the words just like sus...
Word Count: 2.2k
The numerous differences between your childhood and your boyfriend’s were anything but subtle.
Growing up, you felt as if you were a puppet being dangled for the world to see. Your mother, Narcissa Malfoy, was a complex woman; She obviously loved you very much. She held you, but never longer than it took to keep your tears at bay. Lucius Malfoy, on the other hand, was your father in blood only. His disdain for your lack of enthusiasm regarding blood purity was obvious. He had never once in your 18 years on Earth said ‘I love you’, or even a simple ‘I’m proud of you’. Until the day came where you were willing to take the dark mark and fight on behalf of Lord Voldemort, you would be nothing in your parents’ eyes besides a test child before Draco’s birth.
Now, from what Fred had told you, his childhood was seemingly filled with sunshine and rainbows. He spent his summers wading in the pond near the Burrow, listening to the chirp of crickets and giggles of his numerous siblings. The entire family was open about showing their love in words and actions. Molly and Arthur, despite not being particularly rich, would give the clothes off their backs if it meant their children would never have to experience fear in any capacity. Fred always had a playmate, and never did he have to go through life fearing being expelled from the family home for his opinions.
In the simplest of terms, Fred and you were complete opposites. Your similarities were found in the small things; the way you both were headstrong and loyal, and most of all...
You both despised Filch. Fred had saved your butt from being caught in the halls after dark at the beginning of 5th year. He had decided then and there that despite the fact that you were in a different house, you simply had to be more than another member of the besmirched sacred twenty-eight. He knew from the second you were taking his outstretched hand in the dimly lit corridors that no matter what, you both were destined to be in each others’ lives. As he led you down a secret passage to the sound of Mrs. Norris’ eardrum-rattling mewls, you knew that the idea that he was just another impoverished ginger from the Weasley family was anything but true. Despite all the odds, that night was what laid down the foundations for you and Fred to become more than just another member of the family feud.
Going on almost 2 years later, and your relationship had shifted from what was a slightly odd friendship to an unexpected relationship. Fred and George were now planning their grand escape for sometime after the Easter holidays, but you had a totally different date on your mind; April 1st.
•─────⋅☾ ☽⋅─────•
“Oi, Weasley! You are a whole 42 seconds late!” You giggled, and Fred simply chuckled before dropping his books next to yours.
It was rare for Fred to be on time, but he always made an effort (and usually succeeded) for you. Due to your obvious difference in house loyalty, the easiest way you found to spend time together was to carve out 2 afternoons each week to just bask in each others’ presence. Every Monday and Friday (unless there was a quidditch match), you would meet Fred in a secluded corner of the courtyard. The two of you would goof around study, snack on some treats from Honeydukes, or simply lie back and enjoy the sunset while talking about whatever came up.
“So, anything big happen today, love?” Fred pecked you on the cheek quickly before dropping his head on your shoulder.
“Just the usual. Apparently, my mother has finally given up on sending me howlers to come home.”
“Y/N, mum already said she would love for you to come and stay with us during the holidays. You could come get a feel for the family over the holidays next week, and you would finally get to see what the Weasley-Twin-Birthday-Bonanza is like!”
“You mean watch your aunt call you George for a whole evening while asking why you aren’t a prefect? Oh, I am so in.” The ginger made a face of mock offense while dramatically huffing into the shoulder of your robes. “That reminds me, will you finally cave and tell me what you want for your birthday?”
“Love, I don’t want anything at all. Having my gal be there for the big one-eight is more than I could ever ask for.”
Money was no issue; Your mother had continued sending you a small allowance, most likely in the hopes that it would sway you to ‘do the right thing’. Fred had always made an effort to get you a new charm for your bracelet for your birthday, which most likely cost him a few weeks in sales, so of course you wanted to return the favor and find the perfect gift. Last year, you had crocheted him a plush lion wearing a Gryffindor-themed scarf and he had loved it. For some reason, though, you couldn’t help but feel like you needed to find him something bigger and better for his final birthday as a Hogwarts student.
“If you say so, Fred. Just don’t complain when you open my gift and it’s a pair of socks embroidered with little kittens.” Fred simply smiled and grabbed your hand that was previously tapping on the edge of your potions textbook.
“I’ll wear them with pride.”
•─────⋅☾ ☽⋅─────•
“Ginny, please tell me you have some amazing idea for a gift that I haven’t thought of....” Ginny grimaced as you sunk into the wooden chair, obviously aware that this meeting you had called in the library wasn’t just to give her some advice in terms of course selection.
“Well... um... maybe you could bring him some muggle joke products? He really gets quite a kick out of them.” The apples of Ginny’s round cheeks became rosy, and she awkwardly rubbed at the back of her neck. “I mean, no offense, but couldn’t you just ask him?”
“I tried that already. At this rate, he will be turning 19 before I figure out what to get him...” A puff of air escaped your chapped lips, and you once again found yourself nibbling on them in thought.
“Well, here you are, big sis! Trying to figure out a gift for your git of a boyfriend?” Draco’s familiar greasy head popped out from behind the shelf before the young wizard marched up to you directly. “Do us all a favor, give him a little ‘life sans Y/N’... Merlin knows his parents probably don’t want a child of dark lord sympathizers at their shack anyways.”
“Shut up, Draco...” Before Ginny could attempt to soothe your anger, you had up and left the room.
“Psh, serves her right anyways...” A resounding smack was heard as Ginny wacked the platinum-headed goon on the back with the heaviest textbook lying nearby.
•─────⋅☾ ☽⋅─────•
It wasn’t like doubt surrounding your relationship had never been an issue before. You often found yourself wondering if your company was putting Fred in danger, especially considering the current climate surrounding the resurgence in death eater activity. Fred had always tried to quell your worries, but sweet words and gentle kisses could only do so much. You and Fred knew how you both felt towards each other, but it seemed like the world was against you some days.
Maybe Draco is right, he could get out of here and find a nice girl with normal parents to settle down with. After all, who wants to be known as the significant other of a Malfoy?
A single tear slipped out of the corner of your eye, but you quickly dabbed it away with the edge of your sleeve to avoid grabbing attention from any of your housemates. The only perk you found that happened to come with being sorted into Slytherin like the rest of your family was that it was far enough away that you knew Fred wouldn’t find out if you spent any time sulking about your common room. For once, the slam of the heavy dungeon doors brought you comfort instead of a nagging chill.
Fred isn’t like me. He has everything he could ever want... All I do is create more stress for him.
Ignoring the harsh gaze of your housemates, you slipped into your dorm and found yourself slinking to bed without so much as slipping off your robes. Pulling the emerald comforters over your head, you let yourself slip into a restless sleep.
•─────⋅☾ ☽⋅─────•
It was finally the day before the Easter holidays, and Hogwarts was more alive than ever. Young couples were spending their last day on campus wandering the corridors, groups of friends sat laughing and promising to write letters on what they each planned to bring back, and even some people that swore they were enemies seemed to be acting more hospitable. It must’ve been nice to not be spending the morning trying to calm your beating heart and convincing yourself that what you are doing isn’t wrong.
“Hey Lovey! Have you finished packing yet?”
“Well... not exactly, Freddie.” Fred’s face dropped, and he took your hand in his.
“Is this about my aunt? I promise you won’t even have to say more than a simple ‘hello’ to her.” The mere mention of Fred’s Auntie Muriel almost cracked your tough exterior.
“I can’t come home with you, Freddie. There is no way your family wants to spend their holiday break with the daughter of Lucius Malfoy. Look, I mean... here’s your gift. Just please promise to wait till you get to the station to open it.”
Fred opened his mouth to argue, but you had already turned away as to avoid him seeing hot tears trail down your cheeks. You would have to be insane to go and willingly spend your holiday alone in the Malfoy Manor. There would be no family meals, especially now that all your parent’s energy went towards providing shelter for the death eaters. As you stumbled away to make your way back to your dorm to finish packing, Fred’s warm hand grasped your shoulder.
“Please. Y/N, all I want is to be able to spend every day of this holiday mucking about with you. I know why you want to go home, and I’m telling you as your boyfriend and best friend to not do it. Just please, grant me a birthday wish... come home with me.”
Fred drew you into his chest, and you found yourself clutching onto his striped button-up as if it would save your life. His larger hands rubbed across your back, and he pressed a small kiss on the top of your head.
“Are you really sure about this, Fred? I wouldn’t want to make your mum and dad uncomfortable, or even your older brothers for that matter.”
“Y/N, my love, the light of my life, just come home. If you can manage to get George to like you more than he likes me, I promise you the rest of my family will love you.” His signature smirk spread on his freckled face, and he pressed a quick peck on the tip of your nose.
“Now, let’s go get you packed, Y/N.”

“Oi, Fred, what’s in the box?” George elbowed his brother while somewhat attempting to be quiet. The train ride was almost over, and you had resorted to using the seat opposite to the twins as a temporary napping spot.
“I nearly forgot I had it on me to be quite honest. Do you think I should open it even though she is coming with us?”
“She said to open it at the station, but we are obviously past that point, so please just open it!” George bounced in his seat, and Fred gave in to temptation. He unwrapped the ribbon holding the small box shut, opened the lid, and discovered a dainty chain with a circular pendant hanging on the end.
“Is that a size reference for your-”
“George! Shut up, you dimwit. I think it might be a mirror-glass type thing, but I genuinely have no idea...”
“Freddie, bring it to your eye and look through it.” The twins both jumped as you rolled over, clearly no longer asleep.
Fred brought the pendant to his right eye, squinted, and his immediate smile couldn’t be contained. When held at the right distance, he could see a small picture of you and him from your first date at Hogsmeade. He was much more lanky and awkward looking, and you were almost matched in height. The smile you both shared in the photo warmed his heart to no end, and Fred found himself having to gather his emotions from the memories he had of that day.
The ginger all but leapt to your side of the cart, and he wrapped his arm around your still-sleepy figure. He squeezed you tightly to his side before leaning in to whisper something in your ear without allowing George to hear.
“It’s perfect, my love.”

Another player Mumbai would like to hold on eye is Portuguese winger Luis Machado. He is certainly one of the largest names inside the NorthEast United’s squad. Machado has played inside the Portuguese Primeira Division for 6 years and will form an vital part of Highlanders’ plan this season.
With lots of experienced players at the returned, NorthEast United appears set for the 7th season. Could this season end up distinct for them? We can assume some solutions on Saturday.
With a brand new head teach in Sergio Lobera, who signed from FC Goa, Mumbai City may be hoping to taste some achievement this season. Lobera is understood for his attacking emblem of soccer and with the addition of Bartholomew Ogbeche and Adam Le Fondre, Mumbai supporters can be in for a deal with this season. But earlier than they get too excited, Lobera had some word of caution as properly.
"It could be very vital to play attacking football. Obviously, we want stability. In football, it's not viable most effective to attack, you need balance between assault and defence," Lobera had said.
The club may even have the offerings of Farukh Choudhary, Vikram Pratap Singh, and former FC Goa player Mandar Rao Dessai.

English Test Hopefuls - Top Order Batsmen
Toby Reynolds, 05/05/2021
To celebrate the start of the English summer and the upcoming Test matches against New Zealand and India, I have decided to talk about the best English players hoping to make their mark in the County Championship and receive a call up to play for their country. Today we start with the top order batsmen.
Current Top Three
The current incumbent men are likely Rory Burns, Dom Sibley and Zak Crawley. Jonny Bairstow held the number three place over the winter, but struggled heavily in India and will likely lose his place in the side, particularly as he has often struggled with the swinging ball in England.
Many pundits believe that Rory Burns seems to be the player most at risk of losing his spot. However, I think that is very unfair. He averages marginally more in Test cricket than his opening partner Dom Sibley from his five extra matches. Although Burns has failed to score an international fifty in his past eight innings, he has ten years of County Championship experience at an average of over 40 (the only player discussed in this article with an average over 40). We must also not forget how impressive he was in the 2019 Ashes series, averaging almost 40, while none of the other openers averaged above 20. This series showed how well Burns deals with pressure and that when the going gets tough, he digs in and scores important runs.
Dom Sibley has had an unfortunate start to this season. He scored 29 and 0* in the first match of the season for Warwickshire but got injured in the following match. Sibley will possibly be out for the New Zealand series and even if he is back, will likely have not played much cricket before the series. This will be different to Burns, who is currently averaging 43 from his four matches. Sibley had a mixed winter, scoring two fifties but averaging 18 and struggling the rest of the tour. If Sibley makes it back from injury in time then I am sure he will start the first test of the summer.
Kent and England superstar, Zak Crawley, has struggled at the start of this season. In the first four matches, Crawley has only managed one fifty and is averaging a disappointing 24. It is unlikely he will be dropped as one of England’s most exciting young talents and his average of 34 is one of England’s best since Trott, Cook and Strauss, even if this is helped significantly by his 267 vs Pakistan.
Always a Chance
James Bracy was plucked out of relative obscurity last summer when he was named in the fifty man squad to train while the country was in lockdown. He had impressed for the England Lions, batting down the order and taking the gloves, and has since continued his fine form. He is currently batting number three for Gloucestershire and is averaging 55 this season with a brilliant hundred at Somerset and three other fifties. Bracy is probably most likely to replace any of the current top three. He has followed the squad round Asia and scored a great 80 in an internal warm up game last summer.
Adam Lyth was known as one of Yorkshire’s most talented youngsters, alongside Joe Root, Garry Balance and Jonny Bairstow. He finally got his chance to open the batting for England in 2015. He scored a fantastic hundred against New Zealand in the second test before struggling in the Ashes and being dropped after the series. He hasn’t played for England since but has really excelled this season, averaging over 70 with two hundreds and two fifties. Lyth is making a strong claim to the opening spot as an experienced batsmen with a good First Class record, averaging 38.
Outsiders
Aged 19, Haseeb Hameed was Lancashire's first opening batsman to play for England since Michael Atherton in 2001. He took to test cricket unbelievably well in the three matches he played before getting injured. He averaged 44 in test cricket and scored a gritty fifty with a broken hand to back up an 82 in his first test. After his short test career, Hameed failed to find any sort of form in the County Championship, until this year. He struggled in the first game of the season but managed a fifty in the second. He then dominated in his third match, scoring a hundred in both the first and second innings and taking the record for the most balls faced in a County Championship match. He followed this up with a 97 over the weekend and currently averages 57 this season. It is unlikely Hameed will get a match for England this summer as he hasn’t been consistent enough over the past few years and they wouldn’t want to throw him in at the deep end and destroy his confidence again.
The three other players who are probably not being considered but have scored runs this year are Chris Dent, Sam Robson and Ben Slater. Chris Dent has opened the batting for Gloucestershire for the past decade and has arguably been one of the most consistent run scorers in the championship. He has definitely been unlucky not to get a call up to England, but being over 30 means he is possibly missed his chance. Sam Robson has seven test caps for England, with one hundred and an average of 30. This seems to be a common theme for English openers post-Strauss. He failed to impress in his short stint and Cook made the decision to drop him from the side after Robson was over-analytical of himself and tried to keep tweaking his technique. He is averaging slightly under 50 this season with a hundred and 95, but will probably not get a call up unless there is a huge spree of injuries. Ben Slater is a 29 year old opening batsman for Nottinghamshire. He averages 33.5 in First Class cricket but averages over 50 this season with two hundreds. He impressed in pre-season, where I saw him grind out a fifty while conditions were tough, before becoming more expansive in the afternoon sessions and continuing to 103* vs Oxford UCCE. It would be a surprise pick to see him in an England squad but with Ed Smith losing his job, anything could happen.

Today was another normal day in my life, just another day at work, leaving home to breathe, taking a stroll through the small town I lived in. It had been about a year since I moved here in New England, right after I finished college, I knew it would be crazy to move to a new country again, but I had already been to the United States a few times, and I have to say that there in New England was incredible, and I knew that was where I wanted to live.
The city I was currently living in was not very big, but it was comfortable, and even though I was far from the mess of big cities where I practically always lived, I thought it would be a perfect and peaceful place to calm down. I must say that the city was as if it had stopped in the last century, everything was so old, almost like in the movies, but I'm not complaining, I kind of always wanted it.
As almost every day I passed by the antiques store, and today I decided to take a look inside the store, just to see the old things there.
-y/n! How nice to see you here! - As soon as I entered, Mr. Washington came to welcome me, he was a nice gentleman, he was like a grandfather to me, always telling me stories about his life or his merchandise, and I loved that.
- Hi Tom! How are you?
- Better now - He smiled and motioned for me to go to the back of the store. - Something new arrived this weekend, I'm sure you'll love it.
- What is? - I follow him and he takes me to a box which he opens, and inside there was a type of radio. - A radio?
- Yes! But it is not just any radio, it is a Voxola PR-76 Radio, very few of this model were produced, this is a rarity!
- I can get it? - I say making gestures with my hands to pick up the radio so I can analyze it.
- Of course! Just be careful.
- Yes, I will. - Washington was right, it wasn't just any radio, but not because it was rare, but I had a strange feeling holding it, not a bad feeling, it was something... good. - Can I buy?
- I knew you were going to be interested! Of course you can! And since I know you, I will give you a special discount.
- You don't have to do that Tom, seriously!
- y / n, I know that with the price that this radio is worth, you would not be able to buy it, and even more, no one here in this city will be interested in that. You are practically my only source of income!
- Well, and that's exactly why you shouldn't give me a discount, you're going to lose a lot of money like that!
We discussed the amount to be paid, until we reached an agreement where I would pay little by little, until I paid the amount the radio was worth. When I finished making the purchase, I talked a little more with him and then I went home, when I arrived at my simple, but comfortable home, I put the radio on the living room shelf. I think if someone who didn't know that I'm the one who lives here would think that this house belongs to an 80-year-old, but in fact, it's the home of a 24-year-old woman only.
I sigh and look around my house, everything was silent, just with the sound of some birds, being alone has always been one of my biggest fears, and even if I had people to talk to, there I was, alone. I look at the wooden box, with the photo of my dog, m / d / n, where his ashes were inside, he was for me one of the only things that made my day, which made me not feel so alone, but unfortunately he ended up dying from an accident.
- I really miss you m / d / n. - I put my hand on the box and allow some small tears to fall, and then I look at my left wrist, where there was a tattoo with the name f / d / n, my first dog, where I grew up with her, and of course the inevitable would happen someday. - You are also sorely missed.
I try to ward off tears and sadness by putting some happy songs on my phone, and I soon thought it would be a good idea to tidy up the house, since it had been a while since I cleaned it up decently.
I spent several hours cleaning the whole house, but even so I couldn't finish everything, as I was very tired, I decided to lie on the couch for a while, until my belly started to snore and I went to the kitchen to get something to eat and then go back to the couch.
Again everything was silent, with only the occasional sound of crickets and frogs, as much as I liked the silence, I knew it was a trap, and of course he would soon appear, that damn voice that whispered things in my head like:
"Hey, remember that time you were embarrassed?"
"Hey, do you remember your wonderful boyfriend who cheated on you?"
"Do you remember those happy moments with m / d / n and f / d / n that will never come back?"
"You will never be enough"
"everything is your fault"
"nobody wants someone like you around"
And several other things, which he knew would make me anxious. I couldn't help screaming in anger for that voice to disappear, I couldn't help tears of frustration falling. I fell on my knees on the floor and curled up right there.
The good thing about living alone is that no one would hear me crying or screaming.
I joined forces and got up from the floor, and then I went to my medicine box, I know I should have stopped taking that, and I had already tried, I was succeeding, but I couldn't stand it, I didn't want that damn voice anymore, I know I should face it, but… it was too late, it couldn't be destroyed, so the only thing I could do was to avoid it.
It took a few minutes for the medicine to take effect, and I was calm again. I lay down on the couch again, my eyes were heavy, and when I was almost asleep, I heard a voice, but this time I was sure it was not just in my mind, when I look around, I realize that sinister voice came from the Voxola radio.
- It seems that you are going through problems my friend.
This couldn't be real, how the hell could this be happening? This was supposed to be a dream, sure it was, but when I bit my finger and felt pain and saw it bleed, I was sure it was real.
- Y-you, are ... are.
- Talking to you of course!
- This is impossible. - Maybe it was the medicine's effect? But there was no way, this medicine would never do that. What if it was that stage where I am awake and dreaming at the same time? I think that was the only valid option.
- I know a way to solve your problems.
- A psychologist. - I say to myself before that radio voice answered.
- No, it's much better. Just follow this map and you will have the solution to all your problems.
- Map? - The radio didn't answer me, now I don't know if that was real, if it was some kind of daydream, or if I was going crazy. I think I better sleep, staying awake for sure is not good for me. I take a shower and then go to my bed and luckily I fall asleep quickly.
When I wake up I do my morning routine, I go to the bathroom, then to the kitchen, I make coffee, I wait to be ready and then I take it and I also take the same medicine from yesterday, a little hesitantly, but I knew it would be better this way, and I decide to take it.
I walk by the living room when I look at the radio and remember last night, I look at my finger and see that it is hurt, I should be hallucinating, but I realize that there was something on top of the radio, and that I had sure it wasn't there before, when I get closer I realize that it was a paper, but not an normal paper, it was a map! Soon I remember the voice of the radio yesterday that spoke about a map, was that it?
When I look more closely, I realize that it is the map of the city and the forest that surrounded it, and in a place far away in the forest there was an x marked in red.
Is this real? Could that end that voice? No, I was sure that no, easy things like that are never good signs, and they are never what they seem…. but what was there in the forest?
And that was what led me to be there, at that moment in the middle of a forest, not to end my problems, but to find out what the hell was there in that red x.
I had thought before that it could go bad, but my curiosity was not quiet, I wanted to, I needed to know what was there.
The forest was dense, there was no way for me to go by car, and there was no trail that I could use to walk, I had to walk in luck and wait until I got to the right place. Of course, I was using my cell phone to locate myself, but I wasn't sure if my coordinates were compatible with those on the map.
Until at one point I arrive in a clearing, where there was a very old house falling apart due to the time it dominated there, I look at my cell phone, and theoretically that was where the x marked.
- Great, I walked for two hours here to find a house falling apart in the middle of nowhere! - I kick a stone that rolls away. I look at the house, what was I really hoping to find? Maybe there was something inside the house? What if there was someone?
I see a sign on the fence of the house, the writing was very worn and I just couldn't understand what was once written there.
- HEY! Is anyone there ?! - I scream for another human being, but I got no answer, I approach the door of the house, and with my foot I push the door, which simply falls, and a lot of dust comes towards me, causing an attack of cough at me.
I enter the house, which inside there were several things that seemed to be very old, besides several cobwebs, plants and a lot of dust. I analyzed the house, and there was not much, I looked at the stairs, it was dangerous to climb that, and I was sure that any misstep I could fall, break, and stay there, because there was no way anyone could save me.
But I decided to take a chance, and climb those stairs, and when I got to the second floor I realized that there was some kind of machine, and when I approached I realized that it probably wouldn't be working, because it should have been there for many years and the weather had degraded.
I ventured into the place, looking for clues that could tell me something, but the only thing I found was some papers with notes and projects, but I didn't understand what that meant.
While walking around the place I tripped over a wood and ended up touching the lever of the machine, who knows how, it started to work and out of nowhere a black shadow appears in the place and a smiling face appears in front of me and then I feel something grabbing my feet, I try to break free, but it was useless.
- Leave me! - Of course it didn't work, and that was the last thing I remember, after that, it was just darkness and a laugh.
