thinking about the person on the whatisthisplant subreddit yesterday who had never been able to grow anything successfully in a garden but last year their dog stole a whole acorn squash of their table to run outside and play with it like it was a ball and now they have acorn squash growing in their backyard. dispersal via dog toy shape

Garbage Pumpkin 2024!

This plant seems to be a hybrid pumpkin x yellow squash, so I've been eating the fruit unripe. Letting a couple of them grow full size to try and make jack o lanterns from, they've got crazy delicate skin but they are turning vivid orange and huge.

Had to detangle the cucamelons. Important tip: do Not keep gourds (and other vines) indoors longer than you have to. They will get tangled in everything. 😭

Also: bonus cute flower with gourdlet attached!

Cucurbitaceae have separate sexes for their flowers. The ones with the tiny undeveloped fruit are the ones with the ovaries that will develop into full fruit. The ones without are the pistillate flowers that only produce pollen. This is also why gourds are not self pollinating and require a pollinator.

Despite sucking at growing them, I live in hope and am incapable of composting my pumpkins without at least harvesting the seeds.

Smashed the last one open and realized: oh shit, that's definitely a pumpkin for eating! So now I have pumpkin for the dogs, for Japanese curry, and made a big batch of pumpkin tomato bisque for dinner.
