SR-71 pilot recalls that time his Blackbird flew so fast that he and his RSO landed at Kadena AB two hours before they took off from Beale AFB beating the sun
‘We took off from Beale at 11:00 AM and arrived at Kadena at 9:00AM, two hours before we took off from Beale, we beat the Sun!’ Buddy Brown, SR-71 Blackbird pilot.
The SR-71, unofficially known as the “Blackbird,” is a long-range, advanced, strategic reconnaissance aircraft developed from the Lockheed A-12 and YF-12A aircraft.
The first flight of an SR-71 took place on Dec. 22, 1964, and the first SR-71 to enter service was delivered to the 4200th(later 9th) Strategic Reconnaissance Wing at Beale Air Force Base, Calif., in January 1966.
On Mar. 8 1968 Lieutenant Colonel Buddy Brown and RSO Major Dave Jensen flew the very first SR-71 Blackbird (#978) out of the US to Kadena Air Base, Japan also known as the OL (operation allocation).
Buddy came from the U-2 program* to the SR-71 and he had many risky adventures. He was picked for this honor because he was the chief of Standardization during this time.
Buddy and Dave experienced quite a few problems with the SR-71 since the airplane was not used to the weather in the tropics. The following story is an excerpt taken from Buddy Brown memoirs.
The story of the first SR-71 crew to deploy a Blackbird in Japan that landed at Kadena two hours before the take off from Beale beating the sun

‘The first leg of the first flight of the SR-71 across the Pacific was to Hawaii. And then on to Kadena it took five hours. When I flew the U-2 on this same flight it took five days (that included resting). Speed is good! On the third leg of the flight we encountered another small problem, my left generator went off-line and I couldn’t reset it. This was a NO-GO situation which means I should land as soon as practical… My decision was to continue on because we were only 1000 miles (less than 30minutes) from Kadena. At this time on the high frequency radio using our coded callsign I contacted mama [Kadena’s Command post] and informed them “I was lost, but was making good time” [because despite the problem, Buddy’s SR-71was flying REALLY fast].
‘We landed at Kadena with no further problems.
‘We took off from Beale at 11:00 AM and arrived at Kadena at 9:00AM, two hours before we took off from Beale, we beat the Sun!*
‘For the first few weeks we would be using the hangars next to the CIA hangars that’s where the A-12’s were. A couple of the CIA pilots briefed us on the missions they were flying, what to expect when flying some of our missions. They were very helpful. Kadena was one of the major US strongholds of the far east. Since I had flown the U-2 a few years before out of Kadena I was very familiar with the Far East.
‘Dave and I had over a week to target study the route of flight and survival techniques in case we were shot down, refueling emergency recovery HF procedures. Dave and I were planning to fly the first mission operational.

‘My back up crew was Jerry O’Malley and Ed Payne, they were briefed on the mission also.
‘The following day March 21, 1968 the routine was normal during our taxi out at the end of the runway for the engine run up and trim [but] the ANS system froze on us. This of course was a NO-GO situation which caused us to abort the mission.
‘Our backup crew, O’Malley and Payne, flew the first operational Sortie in aircraft # 976.’**
*Former SR-71 pilot David Peters recalls: “It always fascinated me to see the Sun in the periscope go down and disappear in the East as we outran it. And then to catch up to it and see it come up in the West.”
**Noteworthy Buddy Brown could have been shot down over Cuba since he was major Rudolph Anderson’s backup. If there would’ve been a technical problem with Anderson’s U-2, it would’ve been Brown that was killed over Cuba. And because of a technical difficulty, it was not Buddy who became first to fly an operational mission in the SR-71.
Be sure to check out Linda Sheffield Miller (Col Richard (Butch) Sheffield’s daughter, Col. Sheffield was an SR-71 Reconnaissance Systems Officer) Twitter Page Habubrats SR-71 and Facebook Page Born into the Wilde Blue Yonder for awesome Blackbird’s photos and stories.

Cuba Gooding Sr. (April 27, 1944 – April 20, 2017) was a singer. He was the most successful lead singer of the soul group The Main Ingredient, replacing former lead singer Donald McPherson who was diagnosed with leukemia. According to Billboard, as the lead vocalist, he scored five top 10 hits, most notably, “Everybody Plays the Fool”, peaking at #2 for three weeks, and peaking at #3 on Billboard's all-genre Hot-100 list. “Just Don’t Want to Be Lonely”, “Happiness Is Just Around the Bend” and “Rolling Down a Mountainside” were top 10 hits on Billboard charts. He recorded as a solo artist with hits of his own.
He had a brief solo career on Motown Records during the late 1970s and early 1980s making two albums; the first was titled The 1st Cuba Gooding Album. His biggest international success was Brian Auger’s Happiness Is Just Around the Bend, which has in recent times been sampled by several R&B artists, as well as hitting the charts again as a remix by UK Hardcore Rave group Altern-8. He returned to The Main Ingredient and made two more albums for RCA Victor. Samples from the song featured prominently in Bizarre Inc’s single “Playing With Knives”. He released a single called “Politics”. He was developing a film project called Everybody Plays the Fool: The Cuba Gooding Story. The film highlights three generations of the Gooding Family: Dudley “Cuba” Gooding, Cuba Gooding Sr., Cuba Gooding Jr., and Omar Gooding. #africanhistory365 #africanexcellence

IS BLOOD THICKER THAN WATER?
WF THOUGHTS (4/27/24).
If you had a sibling who was running for President, would you support their candidacy?
Everybody always says that “blood is thicker than water,” and that family bonds will always trump all other considerations. Is the old proverb true?
Robert Kennedy Sr., the brother of JFK, was assassinated in 1968 while he was running for President. RFK and his wife, Ethel, had 11 children. One of the children, Robert Jr., is currently running for president as an Independent. How his candidacy might impact the 2024 election is a matter of debate. Will RFK Jr. take voters from Biden? Will he take voters from Trump? Will he be irrelevant? Nobody knows.
Two of RFK Jr.’s siblings have died. He has 8 living siblings. About 10 days ago, at a big event in Philidelphia with Biden, 6 of the siblings announced that they were 100% committed to the reelection of Big Joe. The siblings crapped all over their brother. They said that their brother should drop out of the race. They said that their brother is a danger to the country. Blood certainly isn’t thicker than water in the Kennedy family. Political considerations are thicker than blood.
Sooner or later, I’m going to run for President. You’ve probably seen the writing on the wall. It appears that older candidates have become acceptable. That’s good news for me.
I have two words for my siblings: GUANTANAMO BAY. Gitmo is a brutal U.S. military detention camp in Cuba. It’s a terrible place.
By posting this blog entry, I’m giving notice to my siblings that they’re going to Gitmo if they don’t fully support my run for President. And I mean 110% support. You will attend every rally. You will sing my praises. If you don’t, you better stock up on sunblock. You’ll be spending years in an outdoor cage at Gitmo. Get it? I won’t tolerate any of that Kennedy hogwash in this family.
You’re not off the hook if we have a close connection that’s not familial. You better goddamn support my campaign! If you don’t, the spooks at the CIA will find you. Because you’re not my siblings, I’ll give you a break and you won’t go to Gitmo. There’s a nice little federal prison in Kansas called Leavenworth. That’s where you’re going if you don’t support my campaign. Unlike at Gitmo, you won’t need sunblock. You’ll have a “special room” at Leavenworth. You’ll never see the light of day. Can I count on your full support?
I’m sending a copy of this to Ethel Kennedy. She needs to have a little talk with her family. They need to understand that blood is thicker than water.

Additions aside, this is a really good post, and I think it poses an interesting question: why did Cuba perform so much better than USSR in resisting bureaucratization and abuse of power?
With the necessary caveat that I know a lot more about the USSR than Cuba and you should take my theories here with several grains of salt, two things stand out to me.
First, Lenin died and Castro lived.
I can elaborate on this in another post, but many of the USSR's entrenched issues originated from the power struggles following Lenin's political marginalization due to failing health and subsequent death. Castro had decades to guide his country and party apparatus and prepare for his own death, and that makes a huge difference.
Second, the Cuban communists were just a lot more popular.
It's worth remembering that the Bolsheviks were, at their core, a worker's party who achieved great popularity within the cities but had little pull among peasants in a country that remained incredibly rural for the first half of the 20th century - their interests were never going to be aligned with majority of the population in the early years.
They attempted to cover this failing by coalitioning with the socialist revolutionaries (who were effectively the peasant party) but the SRs we're suicidally committed to Russian involvement in WWI, so that coalition broke down in 1918 when the SRs failed to execute a coup. From then on, any true democracy was out of the question, for the very simple reason that the peasantry would not have voted for the Bolsheviks.
In Cuba, on the other hand, it seems like the revolutionaries were overwhelmingly popular with everyone outside the bourgeoisie, I think because they represented a fusion between communist organizing among workers in the cities and more non-denominational nationalist and anti-imperialist organizing in the countryside. Democracy is a much easier option when everyone likes you!
There's also something to be said for the role of the US here - the US has spent the past 60 years making a very strong case that the communists are the best and only option for resisting US imperialism.
hi I've been following you for a while and I had some questions about MLism. First, while I think I have a decent understanding of how it works economically, how would a ML government (after the revolution) ensure it doesn't become too powerful? like what systems would be put in place so that it hears public opinion and dissent (should there be any) and not try to maintain power through oppressive means?
Secondly, what would the aftermath of the revolution look like? once the government is overthrown, there will most likely be a period of instability where different factions trying to sieze control. How would the MLs make sure that they get seated in power?
I am genuinely trying to learn more about it, so I'm sorry if those questions are ignorant. Thanks!
i mean, that first part? i'll be completely honest with you and say that in my opinion that's a partially unsolved problem. i think that lenin's prescriptions in state & revolution, based on the actions of the paris commune--that all 'officials' should be subject to democratic recall at any time and paid no more than anyone else--would be a good start.
but of course the USSR did not ossify and see abuses of power because its leaders simply forgot about what lenin wrote--the centralization of power and limiting of worker democracy was a direct result of the newly formed state apparatus having to fight brutal years-long civil war followed as mere decade later by a brutal years-long international invasion. & this is of course a situation that will be faced by any serious socialist government & their newly formed apparatus!
however, on the other hand -- cuba has succesfully maintained an incredible system of participatory democracy. i think that mao's idea of the 'mass line' -- that theory must constantly be in dialogue with the situation on the ground and the situation of the workers -- is vital to maintaining this. in its own time of crisis, during the 90s, instead of 'pulling the ladder up' on workers' councils, cuba expanded and doubled down on its participatory democracy. i think if any nation has succesfully followed lenin's theory and example, it's cuba, and the mass workplace and municipal democracy that the cuban communist party has invited should be the model for any future socialist revolution.
and quite frankly the reason why MLs will 'take power' after the revolution is because marxism-leninism is the only revolutionary socialist ideology with a plan and ability to take and maintain power over the bourgeoisie. i think one thing reading lenin will very much clarify is that the socialist state is not something that is built after the revolution but a continuation of the revolution -- lenin explains aptly the marxist position that, having taken up arms in order to dethrone the bourgeoisie, to not establish a marxist dictatorship of the proletariat is to throw aside those arms that have already been wielded and used. 'not setting up a worker's state' isn't inaction, but a deliberate choice to be disarmed and helpless in the face of foreign intervention or counterrevolution.
and this is also why i think that while solving the (very real and dangerous!) spectres of bureaucracy, of revisionism, of socialist militias becoming police forces "special bodies of men apart from and above" the people instead of "self-acting armed organizations" of the people is a vital and pressing question for marxism-leninism to address in both theory and practice, it is just as vital to note that only marxism-leninism can succeed to the point where this becomes a problem--only marxism-leninism has shown the historical ability to put the workers in a position of political supremacy that they might risk losing to these flaws and missteps.
& seriously, don't be sorry for asking questions. any questions in good faith are welcomed on this blog, because i'm a communist and i do in fact think it is my job to explain communism to people. have a nice day & don't be so down on yourself!

My united nations of friends
With all of this racial unrest going on in this country and the world, I still can't grasp why people are like this.
I can't understand racism because I have a rainbow of color in my life. I can't understand war because no one wins, just so many innocent people are killed.
I looked back at the times of my life, and I saw the United Nations of my friends. I have friends from Cuba, from Puerto Rico, I have friends from Nicaragua, Black friends, Chinese friends, who are all from different backgrounds, different religions, different sexual orientations and yea, even from different political parties yet we are all friends.
This mixed group is here for one another. We all love each other. They are there for one another through thick and thin, and we always help each other out.
These are the friends I choose for my family, and I know that they are with me through thick and thin, through good times and bad times. They are there for me when I need a shoulder to cry on, when I needed groceries for my kids, when times are hard, these are the people that I know will be there for me, and they know I will be there for them.
I have Caribbean friends and friends from Antigua, St. Thomas, Jamaica, The Bahamas, Haiti, and Columbian friends. I have black, brown, yellow and white friends. I have friends who are gay or straight. I have LGBT friends and drag queen friends. I have Christian, Jewish, Catholic, Muslim, and even Atheist friends.
I have friends who are democrats, republican, independent, and people from the we don't give a shit party. It does not matter to me. They are all the people I choose to invite into my life. The ones who love me for me and that I love for their heart and soul.
So what I don't get is why it is so hard for others to get this? There are good and bad in all, in police, in blacks, in whites, in Christians, in Muslims, in all, there are good and bad but to hate one race, one culture, or one religion on what a few bad apples have done, well that is just horrible.
I say in my blogs all the time, to be compassionate towards others, to love one another, to step out of your box and meet new people who aren't like you.
So many people don't even know another person of another race or they may have the one "token" black friend but know nothing about others.
I am here to tell you that you are missing out, as I have learned such culture from these different groups. I learned to enjoy different foods, music, and religions, but most of all, I have learned to be open enough to learn from them and their ideas and their heritage.
Did you get that message? Let me repeat it for those in the back!
I am open enough to learn from people who are different from me.
Because when you are open enough to learn, you will learn that we are all not so different after all. We all love our children and our families. We want a better life for them than we had. We all want to be loved and respected. We all want to have equal rights. We all want to be seen for what we have on the inside.
Common HUMAN rights. Not religious or race or political goals, just common human decency.
So today my friends, I invite you to open up your mind, to step out of your box, to embrace others different from you, because it will be amazing what you will learn if you do.
And to my incredible bunch of United Nations of friends, thank you for being my friend, for allowing me into your world and your hearts, and I am truly humbled to know and love you all.

Photographing the Soviet Union/Russian intentions in Cuba in October 1962
Buddy Leroy Brown flew the U-2 over Cuba. He met with President Kennedy, who shook his hand and said, “You take good photographs, Captain Brown!’Buddy later flew the SR 71 over Vietnam, North Korea, the border of China, and the border of Russia. He was my neighbor at Beale Air Force Base, California. I have the book he left for his family that has never been published. I have shared before about Colonel Brown’s incredible career In the SR-71; this time, I want to share about the U-2.
In August of 1957, as a first lieutenant, he started ground school in preparation for flying the U-2. This time, it was a little different. because he had to learn to use a sextant and how to take his own star shots for Celestial navigation. After a few flight checks, Brown is upgraded to combat-ready. Being combat-ready meant you were ready to go and fly any place in the world safely. Buddy said he said I would like to add something significant here “Being a Reconnaissance pilot, especially in the U-2 you do not have the pleasure or the advice or the council of other people to confer with when things go wrong.
If an emergency happened while you were over hostile territory it was you and only you who would be responsible for making the correct decision on what actions you would take. If your decision was wrong you could cause an international incident and embarrass our government or even cause your death.
” Many places that we flew the targeted government would like nothing better than to have shot you out of the sky.” We were always at WAR we were always at risk. As a U-2 pilot, you were held to a higher level of maturity, flying ability, and responsibility. We were much more worried about making a mistake in our decisions than we were about getting shot down.
NO ONE, And I mean no one wanted to be flown back to Omaha and briefed the Generals on what happened to justify their decision. Buddy goes on to say “In my opinion, reconnaissance is the single most important thing a military can provide. Not only to this country but to the free world. To provide the intentions of a hostile government is so important.”
A simple statement, but during the Cuban crisis, taking pictures of the Soviet missile sites in Cuba revealed the Soviet's intentions and possibly prevented a nuclear war.
More to come about the U-2 during the Cuban missile crisis. part 1
