Traveling with your pet amid COVID-19 restrictions

According to Time, humans and pets have been bonded for at least 14,000 years, citing physical evidence of the human-dog connection. A 2015 Harris Poll study found that nearly all pet owners (95%) view their pets as family members. Our pets provide love and comfort, especially during crises like the COVID-19 pandemic. It makes sense we’d want to travel with our pets, especially in uncertain times riddled with travel restrictions.

But traveling with pets today is more complicated. Travel alone places risks on pet owners, as seen by stories of travelers being separated from pets for months at a time. Reuters reports more than 1,000 pets are currently stranded worldwide by border closures and flight cancellations. In May 2020, ABC News reported that one woman trying to move back to Australia with her pets had spent more than $40,000 on travel and living expenses due to being stranded in the U.S. because of pet flight restrictions.

Traveling with pets by air these days can be tough, depending on the type of pet you have and where you’re going, but there are travel options with pets available. This guide provides an updated status on where airlines currently stand on pet travel and how to use alternative travel options to make the most of traveling with a pet, so you can successfully get to your final destination together.

Flying with your pet

Typically, flyers have two options for traveling with pets: carrying the pet on the plane or checking the pet as cargo. There are some restrictions on types of pets that can travel on board, including dog breeds. For example, airlines like Delta never allow pit bull dog breeds as carry-on dogs on planes. Some airlines are more pet-friendly than others.

When pets are allowed as carry-ons, most policies only allow small dogs, cats, and potentially rabbits, guinea pigs and household birds. On the plane, a pet must be kept in a ventilated pet carrier that fits under the seat in front of you.

If a pet has met Service and Support Animal Travel guidelines, the animal may be allowed to sit on the passenger’s lap or sit on the floor space below a passenger’s seat. There are no size limits on service dogs, but Service Dog Registration of America recommends contacting the airline if you’ll be flying with one so the airline can make appropriate accommodations. While there’s typically a charge for carry-on pets, there is generally no charge for service and support animals.

A pet counts as one carry-on item. If a pet doesn’t fit in a carrier for a carry-on item, the pet will not be allowed on the plane and must be shipped as cargo, but not all airlines allow pet travel as cargo. There are usually minimum age requirements for pets traveling on board or as cargo as well, which is around eight to 10 weeks old.

Currently, there are more restrictions for pets as cargo due to the pandemic. Reuters reports major airlines like United suspended pet cargo programs because they no longer made financial sense or could be done safely during the pandemic. Instead of shipping pets, airlines can make more money shipping other types of non-animal cargo.

Already, many airlines don’t allow pet cargo travel because of the dangers and horror stories that have accompanied pet cargo travel, since it’s a riskier form of pet transport compared to carry-on pet travel. It’s unknown when — or if — airlines that have suspended pet cargo travel will reinstate it. Presumably, without a coronavirus vaccine, pet travel by cargo is suspended indefinitely.

Pets shipped as cargo must get separate flight bookings. Pets may be shipped on different flights to the same destination and must be picked up at the airline’s cargo station.

For pet safety, some pets will not be transported as cargo to hot destinations in the summer, like Phoenix or Las Vegas. Some airlines, like American Airlines, don’t allow cargo pets that have been sedated.

If you want to fly with a pet, it might be wise to work with a travel adviser, since flights that allow pets are more difficult to come by these days. If your reservation gets changed, you’ll have to wait until the next flight that allows an animal.

If you fly with your pet as cargo or as a carry-on, look into the airline policies as early as possible. There may be restrictions on how early you can book a flight for your pet, as well as evolving restrictions due to COVID-19.

Alternative options to flying with your pet amid COVID-19

If you’re not able to fly with your pet, but you need to get somewhere, there are other ways to travel with your furry or feathery friend if air travel isn’t feasible.

Consider taking a road trip with your pet. The best way to ensure safety while on the road is to put the pet in a well-ventilated carrier or crate, or to attach the pet by a safety harness to the seatbelt. Get your pet used to the carrier at home before the trip, so they’re not as anxious once you’re on the road. You can also go on short drives before your big trip to get them used to spending time in the car in a carrier or with a safety harness.

When you’re driving with a pet in a carrier, ensure the crate is secured in the back seat so it doesn’t move around. Make sure your pet is wearing a collar with current tags. It’s best to have your pet microchipped as well.

You’ll need to have rabies vaccination records for crossing over state lines with your pet. Some states may require this proof at interstate crossings.

Take plenty of pit stops so your pet can go to the bathroom and walk around. Bring your own water and pet bowl for your animal to drink from, in case there’s not a water source close by or the pet is hesitant to drink from an unfamiliar water source.

If you’re traveling with a pet by rental car, be aware of the pet travel policies. Typically, car renters are responsible for any damage the pet causes to the car. To avoid cleaning charges, you’ll need to return the rental vehicle clean and free of pet hair.

Traveling with your pet by ship

There aren’t many cruise lines that allow pet travel for pets other than service dogs. When pets are allowed on cruise lines, they’ll typically be confined to a kennel, not a private cabin.

However, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends people defer travel on cruise ships worldwide because of the spread of coronavirus, issuing a Level 3 Travel Health Notice for cruise ship travel. Passengers who do travel by ship are requested to quarantine for 14 days after returning.

If you do take the risk of traveling by ship with your pet, the Humane Society of the United States recommends checking on your pet frequently in the kennel to make sure it’s protected from the elements.

There may be some small boat lines that allow pet travel. Enquire about specific policies before booking.

Traveling with your pet by train

Train travel with a pet may be a more viable and comfortable alternative than flying. Amtrak allows dogs and cats up to 20 pounds to travel on trips up to seven hours on most routes. Pets must be in an approved pet carrier and must be able to sit and lie down without touching the sides of the carrier. The pet carrier counts as a piece of carry-on luggage.

Amtrak also allows service animals to travel on board. Service animals must sit under the passenger’s seat at the passenger’s feet. Pet owners are expected to feed and exercise their pets at train stops.

The Humane Society of the United States reports some smaller U.S. railroad companies may permit animals on board as well. These include Alaska Railroad and the Connecticut CT Rail Shore Line East. Generally, non-service animals must be able to fit in small carriers at the passenger’s feet to be permitted on board.

Although no specific pet restrictions are noted, it’s a good idea to review Amtrak’s latest COVID-19 policies before booking.

The bottom line

If you have to travel during COVID-19, it’s understandable to want to bring your pet along. Pets are such a meaningful source of joy during stressful times. It makes sense to want to be close to them, especially as travel restrictions evolve. Being separated from your pet because of travel cancellations would be heartbreaking. Plus, it can get expensive figuring out how to reunite.

Avoid complications with pet travel by carefully researching pet travel policies with your preferred mode of transportation. It can help to work with a travel adviser, so you have backup plans in place in case plans fall through.

Ensure your pet is up to date on all immunizations before you travel and that you have the proper paperwork to show vaccination proof available on your trip. Get your pet used to travel beforehand by exposing them to elements like a pet carrier and rides in the car. Always prioritize your pet’s safety and carefully consider the value of travel and how it will affect your pet before you book. With proper preparation, it’s possible to plan a trip with your pet during COVID-19.

All the houses I’ve lived in

1. 94 Queens Rd, New Lambton, NSW

My parents current house since 1989 and the house I’ve had sex with the most people in. A regular two storey house opposite bush on a nice street with neighbours that don’t talk to you (perfect). 3 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms with air con, a big fireplace, pool and massive garage. Lovely, but I don’t expect to inherit it so the attachment must remain minimal.

2. 11 Cobb Ct, Annandale, QLD

Okay formative toddler years were spent here. A tropical style bungalow with the lowest ceilings you’ve ever seen and even lower hanging ceiling fans (take off your shirt with caution). A massive pool constantly populated with cane toads year round that saturated the yard with chlorine every time a cyclone blew through. More floor space than is necessary for anyone. Horrible, angry neighbours that hated children. Short walk to shops, no air con despite Townsville being the armpit of the country. I spent almost all of time sitting on a Big Bird beanbag watching Sesame Street and screaming in abject terror every time there was a toad sitting in the toilet bowl (which was worryingly frequent).

3. 27 Woodrose Cres, Sinnamon Park, QLD

Literally the ugliest house I’ve ever seen in my life. Gaudy, over-tiled, far too big for any family, nothing but white tiles everywhere and not a tree, nor plant, nor weed in the backyard, just grass the colour of hay. Who in Brisbane requires an attic? Who requires THAT many bedrooms? What the FUCK is that suburb name? This house we thankfully lived in for no more than 7 months but good God what a relief.

4. 45 Clarence Rd, Waratah, NSW

My grandmother Bessie’s house. We lived there for a year while I was in pre-school and while my parents house was being renovated. Absolutely fascinating house that each grandchild loved to visit. The most bizarre things were to be found there. First of all it was a regular 2 bedroom home with gaudy wallpaper and a 1950′s kitchen and bathroom, plenty of living space etc. BUT the bizarre flat that was downstairs under the house that was built for my great-grandmother to inhabit was like stepping a 1950′s motel room. Pea green bathroom, pink kitchen, rising damp, mouldy wallpaper, dust upon dust upon bugs upon discarded venetian blinds. Oh my goodness it was amazing down there. It smelled like a nursing home. PLUS under the house was this enormous space all covered in dirt and other crap and trinkets and sheets. ZERO light penetrated this space and therefore was the best place to crawl around and get spooked. The laundry, also under the house, had high ceilings that were stained a Jackson Pollock amount of colours from years of laundry and rising damp and rain leaks AND leading from under the cupboards in the kitchen upstairs was a laundry chute that led all the way down to the laundry WHICH smaller grandchildren could actually fit into and snake their way down to avoid the prying eyes of older cousins during games of hide and seek. Until you were too big to fit. Like I found out one day. Not an easy search and rescue mission, I’ll tell you that. OH AND the back bedroom had some creepy as shit naked dolls with no hair and meth eyes that rolled back in their head along with like strange 60′s childrens paraphenalia and tiny trinkets that I later found out were things like ACTUAL jewels from Scotland and vintage broken Rolex watches. Also I remember sleeping in that room in my mothers childhood single bed while she slept next to me in another, while my father slept next to my grandmother in a separate single bed in her room (why??). Later after she died, new owners bought the place and my mother met them after a few years and asked if they thought the place was haunted to which they replied an unequivocal “YES”, my mother then asked if they left dishes out in the sink of a night, to which they replied “.....yes” and Mum was like “Well that’s the culprit, my mother would NEVER allow that” and the look of understanding coupled with genuine fear cements the fact that my grandmother was and is a motherfucking force to be reckoned with, alive or dead.

5. 7/58 High St, Randwick, NSW

I moved to Sydney! Why? I don’t know! My partner was doing a degree at UNSW and I went with him because I was 21 and couldn’t stand my parents any longer so I buggered off. Now. This apartment was a second floor walk-up in a WW1 era building opposite a hospital and BEHIND a Coles loading dock. Plus there was a screaming autistic Arabian child downstairs and the loudest dog you’ve ever heard next door. Serene. Peaceful. Damaging to the psyche. We lived with my partners brother which was fine, but that place not only had no heating nor ceiling fans it also had no flyscreens. I didn’t even have my own set of keys. I shared ONE set of keys with my partner for two years. Fucking ridiculous. Yes, the food nearby was good. Yes, I commuted back to Newcastle most weekends to keep my casual job. Yes the neighbours were fascinating, ranging from the American guy across the way who never ever closed his bathroom window and gave me many shows of his frankly monstrous penis, to the chainsmoking nurse below who had a permanent frown despite living across the street from her work, to the Koreans downstairs who constantly cooked delicious barbecue while pretending to not speak English, to the gorgeous gay couple who lived above us who could add a new synonym to the dictionary to define “unfriendly”. We got out just before the new light rail was to begin construction right outside our building, but regardless, because of all the noise that surrounded that place before that, I now can sleep through the sound of a fucking jet engine roaring right next to my face.

6. 145 Wilson St, Carrington, NSW

Back to Newy! Okay so this was the first house we even Googled when looking for a new place back in Newcastle, and weirdly, we got it!. It was a tiny cottage in a harbourside suburb that was across the the street from wheat silos that are literally the size of Windsor castle. The day we moved in, a representative of the Port Authority knocked on our door and told us that if we ever heard a particular siren, that it meant the silos were on fire and an explosion was imminent and that we would have about 10 minutes to evacuate before half the city was Hiroshima-ed. Lovely welcome. We heard that siren (or a siren at least) about 50 times in the 2 years we were there. Pretty alarming, as it were. Anyway, the house was literally 3 rooms and a kitchen, 2 tiny cubicle afterthought bathrooms, and a nice big back deck. Now I was happy there, it had everything I needed, it was pleasant. I had a good garden going and I really learned to cook there. Carrington is where my family is originally from, and it was easy to walk everywhere and I loved the history of it. However, our landlord was a Chinese lady called Winnie who could not have misunderstood the concept of landlord responsibilities less. Any repairs or things we needed, she was not just unavailable but actively apathetic. It was like pulling teeth to get her to even communicate to the property manager in even basic English in regards to anything we required. Our neighbours on one side were a lovely couple with 2 babies but they had a dog called Trippi that would bark whenever someone in the opposite hemisphere coughed, and on the other side were a couple in their 70′s who were both suffering dementia, constantly screaming at each other and who also had two elderly dogs that would bark whenever someone nearby inhaled. For two years I heard literally nothing except Matt’s piano, Trippi barking, the other dogs barking, the neighbours angrily SCREAMING at one another, wheat silo alarms, screeching train tracks and coal tankers blasting their horns as they entered the harbour. Again, seasoned professional, can sleep through anything.

7. 46 Garden Grove Pde, Adamstown Heights, NSW

Alright, so two friends of mine, also a couple, were living in a tiny half house situation and also wanted out of their place, so we decided to all move in together, into a place that was much larger and that we could all collectively afford. So we found this lovely large house with 4+ bedrooms so that we could all have our own space and get on rather well. And it worked out! My partner and I had a great big bedroom, Matt had his own study, we had a library, a music room, and my friends had an enormous bedroom downstairs plus a huge bathroom/laundry AND there was 3 tiers of yard that we grew all sorts of vegetables in, plus it had a driveway that looped around (I would call it a plantation driveway?) so heaps of space for everyone. It was great, plenty of space for guests which we had a lot of, plenty of outdoor areas for entertaining, it was wonderful. But unfortunately my friends relationship ended and an old friend took one of their places for a year (also fine) but eventually it turned out that the place was getting sold and after literally months of surprise inspections and open houses we’d all had enough and decided to move out separately. Now this so far has been my favourite place. It was 10 minutes to work, everyone had their own space and we lived, I think, pretty well harmoniously together. But nothing good lasts so now...!\

8. *** Kings Rd, New Lambton, NSW

From Queens Rd to Kings Rd! We found a gorgeous house right near a train station that I am currently in and pretty happy with. For the first time I have ceiling fans again plus air con and FOUR bedrooms that I barely know what to do with. Currently I’m sitting in my study surrounded by all my books with the fan on typing this out and it feels good to have my own space for a change and actually have trouble furnishing a house as opposed to making concessions about what I keep and what I can’t. I’ve planted a veggie garden, I have my kitchen the way I want, and the house has been renovated, re-carpeted, painted and made livable for a modern couple. We have spare space for guests (or a spare room for me when I don’t want to wake up Matt when I go to bed at 3am, but that’s the sleep pattern of a shift worker) and overall I feel good about it. Finally. I’ve been looking for a good home to just COME HOME to for ages and for a long time I haven’t really felt that. My last home was lovely, but honestly 3 tiers of gardens to maintain and roommates (though they remain dear friends) are just not what I want to deal with anymore. Actually not even that, I’d be fine with roommates, but it’s just nice to feel like I have MY house and it’s mine to come home to.

Anyway, apologies for this long post, and I know barely anyone will read it, but I started this blog TEN years ago so and I don’t have a print journal to write all of this stuff in, so I might as well talk here. HOUSES! If they’re not haunted, then where’s the drama we so desperately crave?

Welcome to my reliving of my 2015 AT hike. I have decided to share my trip as a day by day memory. Each day I will share my personal journal (what I captured while hiking the trail), my comments (thoughts about the journal/trail from present day), and pictures from the day of the hike.

Journal

First night of a down day. It feels good knowing I don’t need to hike tomorrow (Do I ever NEED to hike). Looking forward to fresh fruit and vegetables.

Met a guy on the Ned Anderson Memorial Bridge (Miles 1458.5 Awol). Wanted to know my pack weight. He wanted to reduce the weight from his current pack. After a while of talking trail, he was here to let his dog swim, the trail up ahead had great views (walked on a gravel road for ~1/4 mile before summiting multiple viewless balds), he offered me a beer. Beer is so good on the trail - cold, refreshing, full of calories. I said no. NO. B/c I wanted to get to Kent and I wasn’t sure what the beer would do to my hiking speed. What have I become that I turn down beer for trail miles. Why? Did I think hiking w/one beer was going to cause me to crash and burn? Was it the time needed to drink the beer? I don’t know.

Remember to enjoy the journey. Listen to the trees, hear the birds, watch the squirrels, enjoy the views, and drink the beer.

I apologize. I am keeping the journal portion as written. The portion from today is a little difficult to follow, but I kept it as written.

I think today forced me to rethink what was important to me. Goals are great and useful. All consuming goals can create problems by sucking the joy out of life. I was (almost solely) focused on hiking the AT. Other things were distractions that I didn’t need - the mans gift of beer being a distraction. After today, I tried to balance joy and goals (with one notable issue). I was hoping to find a place where both are possible. I think I did and still do to the day.

I should have taken the beer and enjoyed it. I was focused on a goal - finishing the AT, but it didn’t mean I couldn’t enjoy myself. After this revelation, I tried to enjoyed the trails gifts, human or nature. I purposely hiked the without music/podcasts, so I could hear nature. I stopped at most viewpoints (sometimes distance / elevation gain deterred me). I looked at the stars and was amazed by the clarity of the Milky Way. I thanked every person that gave me a hitch. I enjoy conversations with other hikers. I was open to staying at a random shelter because it was supposed to have a great view. Those experiences are what makes hiking the AT an amazing and joyful experience.

hi, it’s mandy, and i’m back again like the mess i am with another muse. he’s nothing like aries, so don’t worry. he’s a ‘91 liner from MARS and a gemini for starters (haha!) his name’s kang jinyoung and there’s not much wrong with him other than the fact that he doesn’t stop serving visuals, takes his career too seriously, and he can be kinda dry. he’s the older brother/dad friend type, as well as a very calculated, very ambitious musical genius, just minus the empathy and plus the best skill ever: unflirtiness. plus he’s scared of pretty much every animal. except his bird. yeah. decent guy! wanna plot? like this up and i’ll fly into your ims. i’ve got a profile here, a plots page here and a long bio there , plus a weird social page for fun here. check under the cut for concise (er, somewhat) details.

jinyoung’s got hell of a tongue. he never means it, but the things he says can really pack a punch. ironically, he’s overprotective and often used a security blanket or a sponge for those who need to vent. he’s acted in a few things (he’s really good at it), appeared on variety shows alone, and plans to do a few solo things. ignore the fact that he can barely spell romance and sucks at interacting with women (thanks mom!)

basically,

- he was born in ilsandong-gu to a corporate executive/investor/loan shark and an idol in the early nineties. his parents used to travel a lot and mostly stayed in seoul, but that kind of ended when he was born.

- his mom had to give up being an idol for him, obviously, and tried to be a vocal coach at bc entertainment and prominent face in music while he grew up, but it just didn’t work out. especially when he showed musical prodigy as a kid. probably came from the fact that jinyoung was raised and babysat by musicians while she worked.

- his dad gambled their money not in casinos, but in the market. he invested in a lot of international stocks and different companies. he grew up affluent so the man wasn’t interested in settling for upper-middle class. the whole corporate thing wasn’t even out of greed. he just was a super ambitious guy with a lot of plans. he would invent things, look into technology, take online courses, yeah. not a bad guy!

- mom was barely around in jinyoung’s childhood. dad was always busy. the home driver drove him to dance classes and music lessons without a problem while mom slept with dad’s foreign colleagues. ouch! eventually mom leaves and jinyoung’s kind of numb to it because it’s just like...okay? weren’t really around in the first place.

- dad’s not so happy anymore, but he’s successful. he tries to support jinyoung by sending him to all these music professionals and camps to hone his singing, dancing, instrumental skills...all of that. he writes a lot of songs and works with experts. eventually even tours around asia and works with trainees while he’s a young one. takes a lot of lessons in language and musical engineering. rich kids have it good.

- dad can’t really show jinyoung support other than well, buying him the world. he works at samsung and makes a lot of money as they find success worldwide. does a few things with nintendo, microsoft, company outsources from america..yeah. in dimensions’ formation, the guy pumps a lot of money into the development and jinyoung’s scouted. not like he didn’t deserve it, it’s just nepotism and conflict of interest.

- jin trains for a while and doesn’t make it into alien, which makes him super bitter, but not resentful. he convinces his dad to pay up to dimensions and help out with alien’s crazy settlement. it gets a little awkward when jin’s picked for MARS though. especially as a rapper. the musical genius he is though, he learns pretty easily and does his best. plus, dimensions keeps him hush hush by letting him train under the producers and sit around during the songwriting process.

- jin’s fine now. he’s doing okay in MARS, but it sucks to have to settle for less when he’s capable of SO MUCH. he’s gotten to go into acting and play on variety shows, but he still wants more. so much more. it doesn’t help that he has no chance with romance. boo.

- jin’s a great actor. super great. never expected it, but it happened.

- jin’s a true gemini thorough and thorough. he definitely needs to learn how to empathize.

- jin’s a really good hyung. he spoils his children. period.

- dimensions’ secretaries love him. he’s like a real life prince.

- yeah, he wants to be an established solo musician, but modeling looks kinda fun. if he could figure it out. for now, he’ll stick to dancing and rapping with the occasional piano.

- jin got attacked by dogs as a kid. he’s super scared of all animals since. again, not the bird though.

- jin really REALLY cannot flirt nor catch a signal. he’s pretty weird around women too since he’s never had many around. not weird in a dumb way, just weird in a “how do i approach you and what do i say” way.

- jin’s really kind. he’s like a big husky. i swear.

- jin JUST CANNOT cook. he can’t. it would be cool if he could though, right?

- jin smokes. yeah. it just happened. seems like a lot of things just HAPPEN with him.

Autopsy (autos – self; opis – view) means ‘to see for oneself’. It defines as the detailed examination of both external surfaces and internal contents of a dead body after opening its cavities including further examination, such as histology, biochemistry & toxicology of collected material to determine the cause, mode and manner of death. Postmortem is the external examination of a dead body. A medico-legal autopsy (necropsy) or postmortem examination (necros – dead; opis – view; post – after; mortem – death). It is a scientific examination of a dead body carried out under the laws of the State for the protection of citizens and help in the identification and prosecution of guilty in case of unnatural deaths. (‘Necropsy’ is for non-human animals, which is common in veterinary medicine than human medicine. It is a standard method used by the veterinarians. It is mostly used like an autopsy to determine the cause of death).

In India, the postmortem and medico-legal examinations are carried out by the government medical officers who have undergone specialized training or experience in forensic medicine (forensic pathology). Generally, autopsy takes two to three hours to complete, except for unnecessary complications. Within 24 hours of death, it is best to perform.

Objectives of a medico-legal autopsy are:

In short postmortem examination helps in the criminal justice system to establish the corpus delicti, the modus operandi, and the sequence of events and to locate, collect and preserve clues to link the criminal with the crime, the crime scene and the victim.

Postmortem examination – It is the external examination of surfaces of a corpse by inspection without giving incision for systematic examination. However, body fluids like blood, bile, urine may be collected.

Virtual autopsy – It is examination without compromising the integrity of the body, even without the collection of sample. Due to some reason or disease, the autopsy of the dead body is not possible then with the help of radiological examination, and we can detect the cause of death. (Methods- x-rays, ultrasounds, CT scan, MRI)

Medico-Legal autopsy – The examination of a dead body to rule out or establish wickedness in death. It performs in pursuance of law to ascertain the cause and manner of death and also to determine or rule the evil. The medico-legal autopsy was 1st time introduced in 1302 AD in Italy.

PHYSICAL EXAMINATION INVOLVES:

EXTERNAL EXAMINATION: An autopsy starts from the outside of the body and works inward. Therefore, an external examination is the first step. When a body received, firstly photographed by the investigator. Examiner looks at the outer appearance, including clothes and accessories. Then examiner notes the kinds of clothes and their position and the position on the body before they removed. Then the evidence such as a residue, flakes of paints or other material is collected from the external surface of the body for examination. Ultraviolet light is used to search for any evidence which is not easily visible to the naked eyes on the body surfaces. Sample of hair, nails are takes and radio graphed image is taken of the body. After collecting external evidence body is undressed and wounds are examined if present. The body is cleaned, weighed and measured in preparation for internal examination. General description of body like age, sex, race, hair color & length, eye color & other features (birthmarks, old scar tissues, moles, tattoos, etc.) is then made. A handheld voice recorder or a standard examination form is used to record this information.

INTERNAL EXAMINATION: If the cause of death is not revealed by the naked eye, the medical officer take appropriate specimens for histology and culture. The major cavities of the body, viz. skull, thorax and abdomen, should me opened and examined. Incisions must be done to open these cavities.

SKIN INCISIONS –

The “I”-shaped incision, extends from the chin straight down to the symphysis pubis, passing either to the left or right of the umbilicus.

“Y”-shaped incision begins at a point close to the acromial process, and the extension upto breast and across to the xiphoid process. And this incision is similarly made on the opposite side of the body. The incision is carried downwards to the symphysis from the xiphoid process.

Modified “Y”-shaped incision: Incision made in the middle from the suprasternal notch to the symphysis pubis. It extends over the clavicle to its center on both sides and it passes upwards over the neck behind the ear.

For the removal of organs two techniques the Virchow technique (removing each organ individually) or the Rokitansky technique (all the organs are removed once) are used. The organs are weighed to detect the certain illness and blood samples are also taken for investigations. Tissue pieces of each organ are bieng examined under microscope. Contents of stomach are also examined as it indicates the time of death.

Complications during postmortem:

Identity of the body is not possible in highly decomposed body due to decomposition of identifying features (face is decomposed or damaged by the animals, scars, clothes, tattoo marks, etc.). Sex cannot be determined as the lower limb or part of the body ii lost by the attacks of animals (e.g. rats, dogs, jackals, and birds, such as vulture) when body is exposed in an open. Once the skin is peeled off due to decomposition it very difficult to ascertain decomposition it is very difficult to ascertain the time since death and cause of death. Because injuries get obscured by enzymes and body fluid composition changes very much. In highly decomposed body, body fluids get decomposed. Sometimes DNA analysis is failed as proper bones are not present as it is dispersed by the animals. Sometimes it is difficult to extract DNA from bone marrow as insect larvae are present inside it. Proper intact bone marrow, if it broke then it is not helpful. If the body highly decomposed, the entomological study is difficult as the body tissue will decompose. If in a case trace amount of body tissue is present on bones then, there may be complications as various insects will grow up it will complicate to distinguish the eggs, larva of particular species. In highly decomposed body postmortem changes cannot be seen; therefore, identity, cause of death, the sign of death and time of death cannot establish.
