'Grew up hard, fell off harder' -
headcanons about pre-outbreak Joel Miller.
Word count: 681
Warnings: angst, substance use (smoking), emotional turmoil, violence (fistfight), spoilers (those who are not familiar with Joel's backstory as detailed in the game), parental abandonment, mental health struggles.
*inspired by Dust Bowl by Ethel Cain.
Before the world broke, before the pain of loss carved its stark reality across his features, Joel Miller was a different man—a boy, really, in the sun-bleached fields of Texas. He grew up under the wide, often merciless sky, with the hard ground beneath his feet and a restless energy coursing through him. He would never admit it, but he was a kind of a pretty boy, with dark hair, typically kept short and practical, honeyed moss eyes and a smile that could light up the dusty expanses of his hometown, even as the weight of inherited troubles pressed down on his shoulders.
Joel Miller found himself straddling the line between adolescence and the harsh realities of early adulthood. Raised on the modest ranch lands that his family tended more through grit than any great affection for farming, Joel learned the value of a hard day’s work early on. The land taught him much—how to coax life from the stubborn earth, how to repair what was broken, and how to craft beauty from the raw materials provided by nature. His hands were always rough, either from guitar strings strummed beside crackling campfires or the smooth glide of a saw through fresh lumber.
He and his friends, fuelled by the recklessness of youth and the haunting ghosts of their parents’ pasts, made pacts in the eighth grade, swearing blood packs. They talked big—about getting out, about seeing the world beyond the fields and the small-town limitations. Joel was the centre of this adolescent orbit, his charisma magnetic, pulling others into his dreams of something more.
"You'll be a singer," they told him, even as he scoffed, dragging on some shit his daddy smoked in Vietnam—If he didn’t leave all his hell for him.
School was a backdrop to his real education—life’s lessons learned through tough love, loss and the occasional fistfight. Popular enough to never walk alone but far from the spotlight reserved for Friday night heroes. He walked the halls with quiet confidence, caught between the boy he was and the man he was unwittingly fast becoming.
Then came the whirlwind that was his senior year—where a night of abandon at a party led to unexpected fatherhood. The girl, a fleeting passion meant for just one night, became his wife in a ceremony as joyless as the dust that clung to the chapel's windows. That was the southern way; if you knock a girl up, you marry her. But the marriage was brittle, breaking under the strain of reality as quickly as it had been forged. She was gone with the first cries of dawn, leaving Joel with a newborn daughter, Sarah, and a heart abruptly introduced to the depths of adult responsibilities.
Joel's days melded into a continuous struggle, balancing the demands of single fatherhood with the relentless need to earn enough to keep the lights on and the fridge stocked. Despite the physical exhaustion, it was the emotional resilience born from love for Sarah that fortified him. He built his world around her, his ambitions no longer his own but tethered to the dreams he nurtured for her future.
Tommy got out, of course. He said he would be like their daddy—grab military service and disciplined courage with both hands. His letters home were sparse but filled with a longing for peace and the simple joys of their youth—music, open skies, that one time they rented two Harleys for his birthday and drove cross-country.

🖼️ Jordyn Padgett 🖼️
Aspiration: Renaissance Sim
Ethnicity: Irish and Black British (Simlish)
Traits: Snob, Sporty, Art Lover (custom traits)
Age: 24 (young adult)
Current world: San Myshuno
Likes: Writing, wellness, mixology, media production, fitness, skiing, dancing, painting, photography, red, black, white, yellow, brown, classical music, new age music, hip hop, preppy and polished fashion, discussing interests, deep thoughts, stories, idealist Sims,
Dislikes: Handiness, gardening, cross-stitch, cottage-core and pop music, nature enthusiasts, basics and country fashion, gossip, small talk
Potential Profile
Jordyn Padgett (she/her) spent 18 long Sim years in her sleepy farming hometown of Henford-on-Bagley. As soon as she was able, she fled to the bustling city of San Myshuno, rooming with 3 other Sims in the Fashion District. One of those Sims was a woman by the name of Penelope Puri (Penny Pizzazz by default), a Simfluencer who skyrocketed to stardom through her videos reviewing celeb style fails and budding fashion trends. Penelope taught Jordyn the tricks of her trade, and now Jordyn has a following of her own--though she only makes content related to movies, TV, and the art world. Her ultimate goal is to become a world-renowned art critic, attending shows/ galleries around the world and leaving her mark on the industry. She knows she'll have to compete with the juggernaut that is Diego Lobo, but she greatly admires him and hopes they can collaborate one day.
She likes to go out and have fun, but Jordyn isn't a huge party animal. She's just as likely to prefer a night in with Netflix to a night out at a bustling bar. She's got a tight-knit group of friends with eclectic interests, and she prefers it that way. Jordyn has been on her fair share of dates with guys, but it's only recently that she realized her lack of attraction to them. Though she's not out to anyone, she's excited to explore her newfound identity as a lesbian.
Jordyn cares greatly about her health and personal style. She's seen enough denim and overalls to last her a lifetime--it's high quality clothing only from here on out. When she's not working or hanging out with her friends, you can find her shopping online, at a yoga studio, or a gym. Jordyn wishes she could eat healthier, but her notorious sweet tooth prevents her from cutting sugar out of her life altogether. She doesn't do dieting, either--she believes it can lead to unhealthy relationships with food.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I hope you enjoyed this off-the-cuff profile! I'm thinking of creating roommates for her. Let me know if you'd like me to post them as well!
(Note: I don't currently own the Cottage Living EP [that or Cats and Dogs, Horse Ranch, and For Rent]. I'm trying to see if I can find a coupon/cheaper way to purchase it, but if not, I'll have to wait until the next sale. I'm not paying EA 40 whole United States Dollars for just one pack lmao. So if I make Jordyn available for upload before then, just be aware that she'll be missing those official aspects of her backstory. Sorry about that!)
It sounded promising until I got to the "— we use the term women+ — (is) self selecting. If you feel that you belong in a feminine space, we want you to feel welcome here" But I shared it for anyone wants to give it a try.
Tana Hoffman, founder of ILLA, a women+ networking app to encourage participation in the outdoors, spoke at an "activation" event in Park City on Wednesday. Katie Hatzfeld/Park Record
Park City women with a passion for the outdoors gathered at the Stio on Main Street on Wednesday evening to learn about ILLA, a company that connects women based on their interests.
“I just want to say, thank you guys for coming out,” said Tana Hoffman, the founder of ILLA, who drove down from her home in Jackson Hole, Wyo.
Fifteen women gathered around as she explained how ILLA’s app works.
“You create a profile and you can find other skiers, snowboarders, bikers, mountain bikers, climbers, surfers, whatever you love to do, depending on your area,” she said.
Based on your profile, members receive notifications when, for example, another person pings for a ski partner on a coming day. Those available or interested are thrown into a group chat to plan their own adventure. It’s a cross between a friendship dating app and a Facebook group.
This “activation” event on Wednesday was a chance for people to learn about ILLA, connect face-to-face, find some ski or boarding buddies for the winter and develop their own women-centric community.
Hoffman had attendees raise their hands to identify fellow skiers or boarders, and then encouraged each other to connect — like an in-person ILLA group chat. She passed out cards with information about how to create a profile.
Sarah Kodric, winner of the night’s $75 Stio gift card prize, came looking to find friends and fellow Epic Pass-holding snowboarders in the Park City area. After moving from her home in Slovenia to Utah with her boyfriend in June, she was eager to find some women to hang out with.
Madison Blackley, a Park City born-and-raised professional snowboarder, popped in after boarding at Woodward’s monthly women’s night. She talked to the group about her passion for encouraging adult women towards sports they love.
Madison Blackley, a professional snowboarder and Parkite, spoke at the ILLA event about upcoming snowboarding camps for women in the area.Katie Hatzfeld/Park Record
“I coach for women’s camps called Beyond the Bounds. We run women’s adult snowboard camps,” said Blackley. “(These camps are for) anyone, a beginner, never been in the park, if you’re trying to keep up with your boyfriend, if that’s your goal, whatever your goal is.”
One girl called out, “It’s for him to keep up with us!” The group laughed.
This was the attitude for many of the women who attended. And for ILLA’s creator, that’s the whole goal.
The New Hampshire native said she’d always been involved in the outdoor industry but struggled in the male-dominated world.
“Most of the ski shops I was in, surf shops I was in, I was always kind of the little sister,” said Hoffman.
Hoffman said gaining confidence as a woman in the outdoors was not easy, a challenge shared by many of the women she met, and she found herself drawn toward women-first communities.
Over the years, Hoffman began connecting other female outdoor-enthusiasts with each other through social media or group chats. But as one person, she could only do so much. What if there was an app for that?
With this mission, Hoffman founded ILLA in February 2022.
“ILLA was a way of, how do we scale this beyond myself, beyond me doing group text messages and group Instagram introductions,” she said.
Currently there are about 1,000 users from all across the country, she said, but certain areas have more concentration than others.
“We find that wherever you think of as a mountain hub, we tend to see more. So like the Tahoes and Missoula and Bozeman, … areas that you think of as being inherently attractive to the outdoor industry,” said Hoffman.
Park City is one of those places, and Hoffman said she hopes events like Wednesday’s will bring more women onto the platform.
“The women focus — we use the term women+ — (is) self selecting. If you feel that you belong in a feminine space, we want you to feel welcome here,” said Hoffman. “ILLA is very much a choose-your-own adventure. We’re the tool, not the enforcer.”
Still in early stages, the platform is a web app, but plans to launch in the app store by the end of December or early 2024.
Right now, anyone can join ILLA at illawomen.com, and updates will be announced to members as they come.
pain x sakura
pain encounters an angel on the subway.
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Alternate Universe - Modern with Magic, Halloween, Fluff, heavily implied pain is a fae, References to Shakespeare, Alcohol
It has been a long time since Pain has felt like a god. Once revered and worshiped, halcyon days his temple in ancient Amegakure. Full of devotees and their offerings, high priests, and lovely temple maidens. Coffers overflowing with coins and gifts of the highest quality. Coveted fabrics and spices of far-off countries. Tithings of fresh produce and grains from the harvest.
Time does as time does, the temples falling to the wayside, his godlike power dying off with the lack of supporters, as the supernatural realm pulls father and father away from the ones of mortals. Muted echoes of what once had been.
A slow death, rotting away from the world. Decaying and disintegrating. A failed Atlas, too weak to support the crushing weight of the world. Too narcissistic, too driven by his own desires. Watching himself whither into nothingness as the people forget the power of what they believed to be gods. Letting their technology drive progress, no lingering need to prostrate themselves and pray to higher beings and their magical enchantments to fill their needs.
There is great suffering in this new world as well, seeping through the streets into the hearts and minds of the people. Technology in weapons growing with all else, capable of mass destruction on a level none have seen before. The ability to completely decimate regions with only the press of a finger on a small red button, little regard for the plant they occupy. Humans more dangerous now than ever before.
It’s Halloween, a new moon. The veil between the worlds grows thin, all manners of creatures and spirits will cross over to the mortal plane before the night's end. Relish in revelry, dancing and dining, and wreaking havoc on the unsuspecting. The traditions and folklore are modern, but the custom of a grand celebration at the end of autumn and the start of the harsh bite of winter, protections for the thinning of the veil, to keep themselves safe from whatever many cross into their realm, has gone on for as long as Pain has been living.
The humans remain none the wiser, parading around in bright flashy costumes and imitations of magical creatures. Collecting candy and party favors. Darting from doorstep to doorstep, neighborhoods lit with carved pumpkins to ward off evil doers.
Pain finds himself in the labyrinth of the subway lines, on one of the underground trains, riding from station to station as he watches the crowds of celebrating humans come and go. From unruly children to slow moving elderly. Teens too old to go door to door begging for candy but too young to participate in alcoholic adult activities, let loose to terrorize the nightlife of the city. Adults in various commitments to costuming chasing small ghosts or cats or witches as they tottle along with their colorful jack-o-lantern-shaped buckets brimming with sugary treats. Jovial caricatures of vampires, mummies, and lycanthropes board and unboard.
It all seems a bit drab these days. Lethargic as he moves through the realms. Saturnine, weighted down with his heavy past. Dull, gloomy skies fill his days, accompanied by long, morose nights.
He has had many forms, many bodies to walk the mortal realm. This one is taller than the average human, bright orange hair and a multitude of piercings adorn his skin. Metal infused with properties of the supernatural world. Most of the humans skitter by him, thinking him a delinquent, but the congestion of the trains has them hovering nearby.
As the witching hour grows closer, the density of the other passengers lessens, and soon even the bravest of partygoers have left him alone for the night. The harsh florencents humming quietly as the train rumbles on the tracks.
The speaker box announces the next stop, doors sliding open with a ding.
There is a mortal boarding through the door closest to his seat, sitting not far off from him. The only two in the empty train car. She gives him a shy smile as she smoothes down the back of her dress to sit on the very edge of her seat.
An angel. Dressed all in white, presumably what is considered fashionable to young women these days. Short and poofy, layers of sheer, iridescent fabric stacked together, designed to be light and fluffy. A pair of false glossimer feather wings strapped to her back. She is lacking a halo, but the image is there all the same. Auroral in disposition. Pure and stainless amidst the grungy train car.
Hair a shade of pink similar to one he’d associate with the candy given out to children by the handfuls earlier in the evening. Eyes like the masterfully cut and polished jade they used to lay at his feet by the basketful.
She roots through the bag strapped across her body for a moment before pulling out a small, brightly colored pack of candy. Leaning forward, the dainty collection of necklaces that adorn her throat swings with the movement, small replicas of heavenly bodies dangling off of them chiming lightly as they knock around, holding the package out to him. An unknowing offering, the first he’s had in centuries.
“Happy Halloween!” Her voice is as light as her outfit. Cheerful, if not a little intoxicated. He reaches out to meet her in the middle, slipping the gift from her fingers. Little squishy candies, shaped like worms, with descriptors like ‘sour’ and ‘neon’ that give no real clue to what they would taste like. She would taste ambrosial, he’s sure of it. Tucking it safely away in his pocket to further inspect later.
“You are an angel.” He tells her.
She blushes, running her hands over the fabric of her dress, whispering conspiratorially, even with only the two of them to hear. “Would you like to know a secret?”
Pain works to keep his face passive, he enjoys secrets nearly as much as offerings. Nodding for her to continue.
“I was supposed to be Juliet, like Romeo and Juliet. But my date flaked, and here I am, just an angel instead.” She informs him with a tipsy little giggle.
Pain recognizes the reference but has not yet seen a stage production where Juliet is dressed as an angel.
“She speaks:
O, speak again, bright angel! for thou art
As glorious to this night, being o'er my head
As is a winged messenger of heaven
Unto the white-upturned wondering eyes
Of mortals that fall back to gaze on him
When he bestrides the lazy-pacing clouds
And sails upon the bosom of the air.”
He quotes from memory. Shakespeare’s plays are often performed in his home realm, grand productions with intricate sets and seasoned actors in opulent costuming. Sumptuous, luxurious, lucullan affairs.
“You know it!” She says brightly. He nods again. “At least someone appreciates the theater like I do. I’m Sakura.”
An offering. A secret. And now a name. She truly is an angel. He digs deep in his memory for the name he had before he was Pain. He feels almost mercurial now, vivacious in her company.
“Nagato.” He returns. He has not been called that since he was but a small child himself.
“Nagato,” Sakura echoes back, sweet as nectar on her glossy lips. “It’s nice to meet you.”
The train slows, and she rises, reading herself to disembark. “Have a good night, Nagato.”
Pain feels uneasy at the thought of her walking home alone. This sweet angel on the streets in the dark of night, all sorts of creatures out and about.
“Are you far?” He whispers, “I could walk you if you’d like. I’ve nothing else to do with my night.”
“I-uh, okay.” She glances down at her outfit and then back at Pain. “Thank you. I would really like that.”
They make pleasant conversions as they walk, discussions of their favorite parts of the play. Studied and insightful, the way only someone who was once a teen girl who thought herself in love can be about the story. The enamorment of the pureness of young affection despite the fickleness of men.
When they reach her building, Sakura hovers outside the door, dragging out the goodbye.
“Would you like to come up?” Pain looks down at her, another unintended offering, this one coming with many more implications than the first, if her smile is anything to go by. Or the tantalizing way she bites at her bottom lip.
An angel indeed, if a little less virtuous than he expected. Almost enough to make him feel near godlike once again. Divine.
the day is a rather uneventful one as of yet, a chill to the air with gray skies above though it has refrained from raining. claudia isn't at the foundation where various projects await her, a day off-- for once-- which had left her with little to do as she'd awoken on the family estate in london. she'd fed paprika who'd seem rather miffed at her for having woken him from his precious slumber before she'd gone downstairs, had her breakfast and donned a sweater and ventured outside. london wasn't like their other estate in whitby where animals often were found in mass, however the estate was sizeable, greenery within it and a series of foxes had taken up residence, protected from those who might want to harm them.
she knew the estate would soon have a visitor, one she was rather pleased she'd get to see again. perhaps, once, she had been rather vexed with him and the suddenness of the way their lives had seemed to go in alternate directions but they had been so young then, their lives determined by so many factors out of their control that she could not truly hold such against him. and, it hadn't been a total loss of contact. they'd tried, every so often, an email, or a letter because leave it to her to be old-fashioned about that. she was the great-granddaughter of dracula after all. there'd been so many things taking up their lives, especially when she'd begun university. they hadn't actually been in the same country or able to see each other in years but that hadn't meant she'd stopped considering him a friend, even if she wasn't sure either of them knew each other completely anymore. that was the thing about claudia; when she cared about someone it stuck, unless they'd given her some reason not to. the passage of time or not, claudia was as excited about his upcoming visit as she had been when she was a child getting to spend time with someone else her age. she'd always been around so many adults after all.
claudia's out in one of the gardens of the estate, sitting in the grass with a fox in her lap who is allowing her to pet him when the winds seem to change and the fox's ears perk up, looking past her. she turns her head in the direction the creature is looking, offering him a soft pat to the head to reassure him. "it's okay little one. he's a friend." she states, the fox seeming to calm as if he understood her. because he did. perhaps she wasn't a witch or even a full strigoi yet one gift she held as the only moroi was the ability to understand and communicate, in a way, with animals. she'd asked her uncle robert once if that meant she was a disney princess since there were some that seemed to hold her to such a rank in a literal sense within the strigoi community considering who raised her and her connection to him. she hadn't seen her other grandfather in years but she rather thinks that distension belonging to any family member of his brings him great horror.
"rand!" she states, with a bright smile that shows her kitten fangs. has he really ever seen her without one? the fox jumps off her lap then, seems to decide to play with the stuffed animal she's brought out (though it looks a bit more as if he's trying to murder it, he was a wild thing after all even if he always came up to her when she called) and she stands, brushing some grass off her clothes. "you're so grown up!" she's one to talk, so is she. then she attacks him with a hug before pulling back and smacking him lightly on the arm playfully. "i should be cross with you for it taking this long to come see me! but i'll forgive you this one time. only if you promise not to disappear on me again for at least the next decade." she jokes.
Nonhumanity and Exercise
My intention with this blog was to write more content rather than just passively reblog things, so here's a thing I was musing on this morning.
I think a lot of folks tend to view exercise as a chore, something that is a procedure to be followed: go to the gym, do so many reps of so many exercises, rinse and repeat. I can definitely see how that would feel miserable after a while, especially in an indoor setting.
I want to preface this by saying I'm by no means a fitness/health professional or anything of the like, in fact I'm slightly overweight for my height, and trying my best not to be. Not because I don't think fat people can be worthy, beautiful, and all the rest, but just to feel comfortable in my own skin.
For those who are trying to move more, for one reason or another, I challenge you to think about it not as a chore, but as a way you can move to make your body feel good today. For me, as a shifter, this often means I do a lot of different shit.
Most of the time, it does involve running/jogging, but occasionally it also means building core strength, like sit ups etc. Whatever feels best. This is often informed by which form I'm in at that moment. It's the most annoying when I want to go flying, as that's not an easily accessible thing to do (with aids of course, like a hot air balloon, hang glider, etc.), but I've found that anything that allows you to go fast helps somewhat. That includes:
Skiing (cross country or downhill, I like downhill best)
Bike riding
Skating (roller or ice)
Whatever helps you go fast
I'm not sure why that is, but I know it helps me feel air moving beneath my ever-present phantom wings, and it helps a bit.
I've never done what I guess people call "quadrobics", and I don't think I realistically could. I don't want to do anything that may harm my wrists, because drawing is most of how I ease my discomfort with being in a human body. I did quadrobics a lot as a kid, but my adult body isn't sounds enough to take it.
That said, you can modify your stride to imitate having 4 legs. When I'm running, there's a motion I do that makes it sound like a lope/canter, which involves kicking your heel down when you land to make an additional sound. It's not very subtle though, I used to get asked if I was ok when running like that.
It can be tough being a nonhuman in a human world, but I honestly do think exercise is an important avenue to help ease the discomfort of the experience.
I don’t think my grandmother was even that keen of cats.
A review of Somerset House's 'Cute' exhibition.
The Cute exhibition at Somerset House begins in a small pink room, and hanging on the wall we see what is also the start, but in this case of a global culture; the first cat memes captured by photographer Harry Pointer, dating back to 1872. Next to it, following the feline theme, there is a vast collection of 300 china cats inside a vitrine. It is Andy Holden’s ‘Cat-tharsis’ (2016). Playing on the headphones hanging underneath the glass cube, Andy talks about what this collection that his grandmother left to him after her passing, meant to his grandmother; how these cats gave her a sense of control, how she used them as a catalyst for the love within her. He also talks about what cats mean to our culture, to our history. He speaks on the UK economy, and how charity shops - the place where her grandmother collected a great number of these figures- might represent the avid mass-consumption of the British public caused by capitalism. An incredibly interesting and unexpected piece on culture and grief, which a quote from, names the title of this text.
If there is a country knows how to do cute, it is Japan. With a whole room dedicated to Japanese vintage illustrations and art, we can see how these drawings were used as a form of escapism from the after-war times during the 90s, and how Japan influenced the western world with the introduction of the kawaii. Jun’ichi Nakahara’s beautiful book cover illustrations (1913-1983) of women represent a beginning for manga and anime style. Weirdly enough, upon entering the room they called my attention as they resembled ‘Girl with a Kitten’ by Lucien Freud, which coincidentally does match the theme of this particular exhibition.
The Hello Kitty room is probably one of the most talked about parts of the exhibition. With two walls full of Hello Kitty branded objects ranging from notebooks, to rice cookers, to coin purses... A shrine to miss Kitty, and an ode to this epitome of capitalism for having influenced a whole generation, not only of children, but of adults as well. It is interesting to see for yourself how the symbol and brand spread their wings through essentially every demographic, and benefited from the over-consumption boom of the 90s and early 2000s. Sadly, apart from this display of products, the room has the icky feeling of an instagram-like photobooth space without adding any artistic value to the exhibition. But, did you know Hello White (her actual name, I’ve learned) " [...] lives in a London suburb, and dreams of becoming a pianist and poet? [That] her birthday is on the 11th of November, her height is measured as five apples, and she weighs the same as three?" Maybe we’re all just like Hello Kitty, but just measured with a lot more apples.
The exhibition follows with great artworks, like Mike Kelley’s iconic ‘Aah… Youth!’ (1990), a critique of “childhood fetishisation”, and Wang Ping’s ‘An Emo Nose’ (2015), a bright and colourful animation depicting- in a surprisingly charming and accurate way- adult loneliness. The middle of the room is overflowing with objects, which the previous section helped contextualise: A Yung Lean poster, a SADBOYS bucket hat, a bright pink ski mask, a bag of smiley face stamped drugs, a Sylvanian Families toy set, a tamagotchi, a duolingo meme, a Charli XCX vinyl, an Animal Crossing gameplay... I found that, seeing what to me are such quotidian objects in an exhibition space made me laugh. They do however, encapsulate my childhood and teenage years, and quite frankly, are a big explanation of who I am. As someone that grew up with unrestrained access to the internet since the age of 11, I can say that these objects essentially raised me. It made me feel tribal, like I was in a global inside joke. These objects also showcase how cuteness can be used as an advantage politically and how effective it is for conveying a message, making the reality of an ugly theme (oppression, systematic injustice, etc) look easier to digest and divulge.
The last section I visited was an interactive space. To tell you the truth, I did not enjoy these rooms as much as I would've liked, and the reason why has nothing to do with the exhibition itself. The room was full of animalistic and screaming under-12 year old kids, and families with prams blocking stairways and hallways, and parents using the space as a playpen for their kids to run around. I stopped at the arcade, where you could play games that followed the theme of the exhibition. As I was giggling away playing the “linear visual novel about a Froggy chilling a pot”, children began running around impatiently, in the hopes that someone would free up one of the arcade looking screens. Maybe it’s just me, but I don’t have the patience.
With a combination of humour, social commentary and critique, the exhibition encapsulates the story of a culture and phenomenon we are still living through. It showcases how we’ve created a subculture for the use of evading the terrifying thought of the internet times and the digitalisation taking over our worlds. It displays a wide arrange of topics all within the main theme, that is kept consistent through out. How cuteness “contains, domesticates and translates our desires”, and how it lives in a great part of who we all are. The exhibition, and now this text, concludes with a question: Does cute’s shiny new confidence represent its apotheosis in our late capitalist world? Or rather, does this sheen allow cute to undermine the very foundations of the neoliberal regime which spawned it with an ability to not only challenge the norm, but to transform it?
Overview: Guardians Of Greenhaven, my book series. The idea was created when I was only 12, and i started writing the first book way back in sixth grade! i decided to take the idea and adapt it many years later in HS, and made a book series out of it! it’s a dark fantasy novel series with adult themes.
if you’re looking for something with an interesting plot, unique characters, and lots of words, this might just be the series for you.
—
Background:
The books take place in a fantasy world with no vehicles but a good amount of technology. there are mythical creatures, such as griffins, shadowfangs, and “guardians”.
“In a far away land, human civilization met certain wildlife in a.. Much different way. There weren’t entirely people to protect the lands. Instead, they relied on unique, powerful animals to protect their sacred vicinities. One populated location was Greenhaven; a quaint little village, blanketed in hills and lush green grass. Vast amounts of emerald colored forests and floral meadows surrounded the tranquil town. Outside of Greenhaven, there was a large world out there; an entire country named Rezas.
Each guardian of Greenhaven was unique and had a special trait. There were only 6. One flew high in the skies, a beautiful barn owl. One raged below, a powerful gazelle. Another prowled the plains, a stealthy cheetah. Another howled into the night, a clever coyote. One glided within the freshwaters, an agile river otter. Lastly, a creature of grace, a panda. Within this strange and fascinating world also lived various other mythical creatures. Pegasi were rarely seen grazing in secluded fields, griffins were used as royal and military transportation for important missions.. but there were creatures nobody dared to speak of.. Creatures that truly represented hell in all possible forms and ways.
These creatures were called Shadowfangs, known as the demons of Rezas. Every human feared them after they began to act hostile towards all living creatures. Neshira, the queen of all Shadowfangs, commanded them to kill anything that moved and her loyal peers obeyed, wreaking havoc on Rezas and anyone who was unfortunate enough to cross their path. The Guardians of each village swore to protect any townsfolk inhabiting the location with their life. They worked hard and endured arduous, perilous encounters to save their people from the hellish beasts that they coexisted with. The Guardians were extremely loyal to their people and were bonded to the town via an enchanted orb embedded with great power. This orb was important to the guardian and the guardian would revert back to a normal animal if the orb was lost, stripping them of their powers and title.
The guardians worked hard for many years to put an end to the Shadowfangs’ perilous existence, but there were much too many. Neshira had never considered backing down. Sadly, the world of Rezas would always be at war with Shadowfangs.” -book 1
—
Character: The books follow one character: Pandora Willows. Here’s a little bit about her.
“Pandora, a black 5’4” girl who’s 17 years old, was born in the town of Greenhaven. Pandora has dark brown eyes and curly black hair tied into two ponytails while some of her curls hang loose and form bangs. She enjoys wearing big hoodies and occasionally skirts with graphic tees. Her favorite color is willow green and she enjoys sketching and being in the woods. Pandora was born into one of the lower social classes, and spent the majority of her childhood alone. Incredibly independent and orphaned, Pandora taught herself practically everything. Considering her reputation in the town was broken, Pandora had manage to make her first ever friend at the age of thirteen- Chloe Princhett, and soon made more friends throughout her life. Pandora has no allergies and loves taking risks- She also has a cat named Koi. Though she can be impulsive, nosy, and self-centered, she is also witty, charming, and caring. She struggles with depression and has been for most of her life, and her mental state is not the most ideal. Pandora Willows blows off steam by practicing sword fighting and aspires to become a warrior of Greenhaven one day.” -my lore journal
The books are pretty dark, and only continue to get darker as her life constantly takes turns. she meets new people- some good, some evil, and some in between. her mental state takes all kinds of turns throughout the series, and the plot goes through so many twists! pandora can never seem to keep herself out of harms way.
this is definitely an explicit book, with smut scenes appearing all throughout. there’s talk of self harm, suicide, and abuse, so please heed the tags on its page.
—
excerpts from the latest book:
1. “Not enough evidence and zero witnesses. This whole case is flawed.” Officer Jamie said, flipping through the missing-person folder.
“You’re not listening! Pandora disappeared after attending Cornelius’s party, and I think that dark haired guy that she always hangs out with had something to do with it! He’s shady as hell!” Chloe explained, eyes glassy with tears.
“You ain’t listening either. The case will remain cold until someone brings some evidence forth.” He spoke, closing the file.
“At least arrest him! Interrogate him! Do something!” She insisted, watching him rub his temple.
“Get the hell out of my office.” The man hissed, irritation growing within him.
2. “He’s sociopathic and he absolutely wants to hurt or kill me. Yet.. I slept with him? Natural selection, definitely.” She groaned as she sat back on the sofa, closing her hickory colored eyes. “And if anyone were to find out, we’d both end up dead.”
3. “The sight that she awoke to was deeply unnerving. He was staring directly at her. There was something about his predatory harbor-blue gaze that stimulated the heat within her. His unreadable expressions appeared to be the most terrifying thing about him.
Poconos Golf Trip
Poconos Golf Trip About 90 miles north of Philadelphia and about the same distance west of Metropolitan New York City, you’ll find the ideal recreational area for year-round fun. Snuggled away in Northeastern Pennsylvania is the Poconos, a four-county collection of resorts and places to stay and play. Be it winter sports like snowmobiling, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, and fun slopes to ski; autumn hunting and fishing while you enjoy the colorful transition of fall leaves; summer boating, kayaking, canoeing, and swimming the cool blue and pristine waterways throughout Carbon, Monroe, Pike, and Wayne counties; and golf at the 30 odd golf courses and resort clubs almost year-round. Earlier this summer, I took a group of golf writers on a cross-section trip of some of the best Poconos offers. We started at Terry LaGree’s artful design Jack Frost National Golf Club opened in 2007 in Blakeslee and has all the features you would want in a mountain course and none of the shortfalls. Here, you can embrace the Pocono Mountains with all its magnificent vistas and elevation changes. Unlike most mountain courses, Jack Frost National, at 7200 yards from the tips, provides wide fairways, easily identified target areas, few uneven lies, and no blind shots. Before our round, Director of Instruction Ryan Kearn gave us an overview of the course while we enjoyed a light lunch in the new outdoor bar and pavilion. No homes, just flora and fauna. The Jack Frost and Boulder Ski Resorts are nearby. To learn more or book a tee time, please visit www.JackFrostNational.com. We took a backroad ride through small villages and towns to our next destination, Woodloch Resort in Hawley, where we stayed in two lovely five-bedroom homes perfect for a buddies’ golf trip. Each bedroom had its own bathroom, and each house had a great room, dining room and huge kitchen to accommodate all our goodies and drinks. For someone who grew up near the Poconos in Allentown, Woodloch Resort was a complete surprise. thelodgeatwoodloch.com The sprawling resort has three separate facilities, covers 1200 acres and has something for everyone. The Lodge is a ‘Sanctuary for the Senses‘ adults-only spa where guests go to decompress and renew. The Pines is the family resort area where most of the activities are found, and the Springs is the 500-acre home development complete with a Rocky Roquemore championship country club golf course under the direction of Director of Golf John Pillar. The Resort has been owned by the Kiesendahl family for 65 years who insist on treating guests like family. Their attention to detail shows why the Resort is voted the No. 1 Family Resort for the third year in a row by USA Today. After a challenging round at Woodloch with deer following us around the course, we drove east to the “Granddaddy” of the Poconos, The Shawnee Inn. The historic Inn has been the home of an A. W. Tillinghast designed a golf course that plays along the Delaware River and continues onto an island with the river flowing on both sides after crossing a cart bridge. A visit to Shawnee Inn and Golf Resort is special with the Shawnee Island Course being the crown jewel of the property, where 24 of 27 holes are located on an island in the middle of the Delaware River. The parkland-style course is not the norm in the Poconos, but a nice change from the hills and valleys of the typical Pocono offerings. The historic Shawnee Inn has been entertaining and playing host to the who’s who of celebrities since the beginning of the 20th century. Jackie Gleason learned the game here; Arnold Palmer met Winnie here; Sam Snead spent time as the pro. The likes of Bob Hope, Bing Crosby, Lucille Ball, Perry Como, and many more came to the Shawnee Inn for recreation, fun and cool summer nights. shawneeinn.com The Shawnee continues to change with the times. The property has a craft brewery with outdoor seating and games for the whole family. Tom Doak completed a six-hole par 3 course to complement the championship course where Hale Irwin won his NCAA championship. Recently, the Shawnee owners bought Great Bear Golf Club, a Jack Nicklaus masterpiece, in nearby East Stroudsburg to give the Inn a new stay-and-play package. Warm hospitality and cool temperatures are a sure bet, no matter where you decide to go. So, if you are sweltering in the city, take your game and family to the Poconos. You will love it! poconomountains.com/things-to-do/golf Read the full article
