Calacus Monthly Hit & Miss – Gareth Southgate
Every month we look at the best and worst communicators in the sports world from the last few weeks.
GARETH SOUTHGATE
It has often been said that being the England men’s football manager is ‘the impossible job’ given the levels of expectation that come with the role.
The England men’s team have only won a solitary international tournament – the 1966 FIFA World Cup staged on home soil, with that legendary 4-2 win in the final at Wembley against arch rivals West Germany a rare triumph.
Since then, ‘It’s coming home!’ is a regular theme for England teams who reach the latter stages of tournaments, the groundswell of expectation giving way to despair and heartache when defeat ultimately occurs.
While the influence of the mainstream media may have waned in recent years from the lamentable era when managers such as Graham Taylor had his head super-imposed on a turnip, the pressure still weighs heavy on whoever takes the job.
Big name coaches such as Sven-Goran Eriksson and Fabio Capello came and went without lifting trophies, the success of the Premier League adding undue hope that this time, things will be different.
After England’s disappointing exit at the hands of Iceland at EURO 2016 and the short-lived tenure of Sam Allardyce after a scandal, what England needed was a safe pair of hands, someone to give the pride back to the Three Lions.
Former international Gareth Southgate, a quiet and under-stated former international defender, was promoted to coach the senior men’s team after a spell in charge of the England under-21 team.
Seen at the time as an underwhelming appointment, especially after his young charges finished bottom of their group in the 2015 European Championship, Southgate inherited a national team who appeared to need dynamic re-invention.
Perhaps his greatest achievement has been to make the team a success without the swashbuckling pizazz that many demanded.
Seen as a light touch, particularly given some of his reactions in-game, Southgate did far more to reinvigorate the men’s team than he is often given credit for.
Football management is a results game, and Southgate took England to the FIFA World Cup semi-final, which they lost against Croatia; before two Euro finals, losing first to Italy on penalties and then to Spain earlier this summer.
It’s important to note that Southgate won nine tournament knockout games during his tenure, as many as England had ever won in major men’s tournaments before his reign.
Some might argue that having worked with one of the more talented of England squads, he should have won a major trophy, but there was far more to his success than just winning games.
Southgate oversaw the England job during a turbulent period in England’s history, with the nation having to endure the drama of Brexit, five Prime Ministers, rising living costs and culture wars which stoked division among society.
That’s where Southgate’s strength lay, acting as a calming influence but also one who was not afraid to take a stand and do what he considered to be the right thing.
During his tenure, there was little to no scandal, such were the standards Southgate expected and secured from his charges.
But he was also brave enough to face down criticisms for the sake of social causes, encouraging his players to take the knee before games as a protest against racism, despite criticism from some of the fanbase, who had found themselves stoked up by populism.
It was fitting that the first game where this took place was an England match in Middlesbrough, where Southgate had played for many years, steadfast despite the mixed reaction from fans before the game.
He was not afraid, either, to address issues such as the rainbow captain’s armband when the decision was made not to wear it under threat of sanctions in Qatar, a conservative state where the FIFA 2022 World Cup took place.
Southgate explained: “I think we are supportive of the LGBT+ community. A large number of the team on the staff have either relatives or friends from that community, so it’s a relationship and a situation that we’re very conscious of.
“We have tried to be supportive, but I also accept that members of that community felt let down by the World Cup, but I think you have to live your life as you see it.
“I do know that we’re in a position where there might be a feeling we haven’t done enough in certain situations and if that’s the case we have to accept that criticism, but it’s not intentional that we would let down any of our fans, but these are all very complex situations that we’re trying to do our best at navigate.”
Qatar was a rare case of Southgate being caught in external political crossfire, but within the camp, he was a master of creating harmony.
Mindful of the factions that had hampered England before, during and after his player career, Southgate had also set about creating unity where there had previously been division, removing ego and selfishness for the selflessness which came naturally to him.
Players reported a good atmosphere during training camps and call-ups, the pressure of representing England being replaced by a calm environment in Southgate’s image, which allowed players to thrive.
That ability to manage egos, to meld players who spent the majority of their lives competing against each other, is one of his greatest legacies. It helped that he brought through players from different clubs who had played together at youth level for England, the bonds of camaraderie already established.
For example, Phil Foden, Marc Guéhi, Conor Gallagher and Jadon Sancho were all part of the England side that lifted the under-17 World Cup in 2017, while Anthony Gordon and Cole Palmer played in the winning England under-21 Euros team in 2023. Having come up through the England ranks together, these footballers had an existing relationship that made them likely to form better bonds in the senior team, despite spending most of the year with their different clubs.
When three black England players, Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho and Bakayo Saka, received racist abuse online after missing penalties which contributed to England’s defeat in the Euro 2020 final against Italy, something Southgate experienced himself in 1996, the coach was a reassuring figure looking to protect the youngsters from the bellowing external criticism.
He said: "For some of them to be abused is unforgivable really. It's just not what we stand for. We have been a beacon of light in bringing people together in people being able to relate to the national team, and the national team stands for everybody and so that togetherness has to continue.
"We have shown the power our country has when it does come together and has that energy and positivity together.”
The decency and kindness which Southgate exhibited so often has been such an contrast to the aggression and petulance many other coaches show on the sidelines.
It felt like a bond had been built between England players and fans that hadn’t existed for a generation.
Even when ‘fans’ were throwing plastic beer glasses onto the field after a dour 1-1 draw against Denmark, Southgate retained his dignity and humility and faced down his critics, proving that decency is something to invoke inspiration; a strength, not a weakness.
There were criticisms, based around his tactical approach, that he was often too cautious and lacked a clear style of play.
But instead of being seen as the kiss of death, England became adept at winning penalty shootouts, not to mention the progress he made at the business end of tournaments.
Regardless of his failure to lift that elusive trophy, Southgate made the England men’s team contenders again. Where fans often crowed with misplaced pride, he gave them something to be proud of – not only becoming a football force again, but as ambassadors for the English game.
Perhaps it’s fitting that Southgate’s last act as England manager was to publish a letter on the Football Association website confirming that the defeat in Berlin was his last in the role.
“As a proud Englishman, it has been the honour of my life to play for England and to manage England. It has meant everything to me, and I have given it my all.
“We have the best fans in the world, and their support has meant the world to me. I’m an England fan and I always will be.
“I look forward to watching and celebrating as the players go on to create more special memories and to connect and inspire the nation as we know they can.
“Thank you, England – for everything.”
As Rory Smith says in the New York Times: “No other England manager has spoken as much or as convincingly as Southgate. No other England manager has so successfully articulated a sense of what the England team is meant to be about, what it stands for and why it matters.”

Breaking: Paulo Dybala no va a la Copa
This whole Dybala mess really upsets me.
This is actually kinda ironic for me because back in March, at the end of my post (this post), I wrote a lengthy paragraph about how fans’ toxic culture could destroy this team.
That supporters’ behavior who tend to compete players against e.o or criticize players, act like they have the right to decide who should join the NT and who shouldn’t is ridiculous. I mean, being Scaloni isn’t an easy job. Not only that Scaloni have to defend the Copa America title holder, but he also has to pick 23 or 26 players to be invited for his Copa squad when roughly 50 players are showing immense performance on their respective clubs this season. It must’ve been a dilemma, and supporters need to be wise in accepting what Scaloni has decided and believe that Scaloni knows better what is best for his team.
I never expected that I would have to swallow the bitter pill of my own words. Because that is actually what’s happening now, with Dybala becoming the center of controversion in light of the decision made by Scaloni.
Really, who would have thought that the player that gets left behind would be Dybala?
We’ve all seen how Dybala is a true baller this season, despite his injuries. Man be the only player who won 3 POTM awards, assisted 9 times, and scored 13 goals with 7 of that being 100% successful penalties. Unlike how he got injured 40 days before the World Cup, this time –less than a month before Copa– he’s fit. But what the heck then Scaloni decided not to call him?????
Maybe this is what Scaloni meant when he said, those who played for WC don’t have any advantages. That the only 2 players who got a 100% guarantee to play for this year’s Copa are just Messi and Di Maria. But the idea of not calling Dybala is just a total shocker to almost everyone.
A little throwback when the news of him picking up an injury just 40 days before the World Cup sent his teammates into concern. According to Cuti’s statement, their Whatsapp Group chat talked about that and he felt bad for Dybala.
But, surprise surprise, he still made it into the list and joined the whole team just a day before he celebrated his birthday with the team in Abu Dhabi (November 14th).
You can see just how happy and relieved everyone was when they embraced Dybala, even Cuti hogged him from the rest of the players.
Back to the present time.
How can I defend Dybala without discrediting other players, such as Angel Correa, Garnacho (who did well on United tbh), Carboni, or Nico Gonzales, whom according to Sofascore they are all scored less than Dybala’s average rating.
How can I explain that I don't expect Dybala to play as a starter (I don't even expect him to play as a sub either). My only plea toward Scaloni is simply to put Dybala on the roster just like Scaloni always puts Armani despite him not playing. Dybala's presence itself is enough for me.
I know the reality is kinda harsh for Dybala as he found it difficult to get a permanent spot (not only in the Scaloni era).
As in the last World Cup, Dybala only played <20 minutes (replacing Julian in the 74th minute in the match against Croatia and coming on in the last minute during the Final match).
Moreover, in the previous Copa Dybala was also absent due to poor performance at Juve caused by his injury. It really hurts to know he missed the chance to play when the country won the trophy.
To lessen the disappointment, he at least won Finalissima by only playing for 5 minutes, and amazingly in just that short time he scored a goal to secure that 3-0 victory over Italy.
Looking back at the 2019 Copa, out of the total 6 matches played by Argentina, Dybala’s first time entering the field was in the 3rd match against Qatar. Coming on in the 76th minute to replace Lautaro, providing an assist for Kun 6 minutes later. Argentina’s 4th match, he played in the last 5 minutes when Argentina was leading 2-0.
In the next game, again he came in the 85th minute when Argentina had already lost 2-0 to Brazil, and as for the last match to obtain the 3rd place Dybala played as a starter, along with Messi and Kun, scored in the 22nd minute before being replaced by Di Maria in the 67th minute.
Can you see what I’m trying to prove here?
Dybala may not always be the #1 option, but when he eventually plays, he delivers. He’s a clutch. And just like his statement, that he simply wanted to support the team, and tried not to show an angry or frustrated face for not being played. He knew this, and regardless of the situation he was fine with that. He accepted that.
And judging from how very important it is to be an NT player for every Argentinian footballer, I believe Dybala is happy enough to be invited to this year’s Copa even without any guarantee that Scaloni will really let him play. I believe he wouldn’t mind being a benchwarmer (unlike that England player who refused the country call because he didn’t want to be a benchwarmer under Southgate as coach).
So, what made Scaloni leave him out this time around?
What frustrates me the most is knowing there’s no logical reason to justify Scaloni’s shocking decision not to call Dybala up for Copa. There’s absolutely no reason at all.
1) He's fit,
2) His performance with Roma this season is amazing despite injury, while the other players that Scaloni chose are actually played not much better than Dybala,
3) Sentimental aspect-wise, he's one of the senior players,
And even more so 4) He has good chemistry with the whole team (( Especially since he's also part of Messi's close circle –Messi, LDP, Ota, Di Maria, and the Palo Santo trio– ))
5) Nothing bad happened between him and Scaloni previously (as confirmed by Scaloni himself in this interview).
Even Scaloni told that story about his son Noah’s favorite player is Dybala. Like, is that doesn't mean a thing??????
In return, Dybala always shows respect to Scaloni. Never openly throw a fit or complaint.
6) More importantly, this might be Dybala’s last chance to play in Copa America ffs!!
So, what's with the sudden plot twist????
Many people reacted to this news by saying, “Scaloni can do everything that he wants, you don’t question him”, "With or without Dybala won't change anything", and yes, it’s true. Scaloni could have called Dybala either based on performance aspect or sentimental reason, or even simply just because he can and I bet no one will gonna file a complaint about that because almost all of us expected Dybala to be there!! And okay, Dybala's existence won't give any differences since probably won't play either, but at the very least it could spare Scaloni from having this unnecessary public frenzy.
But somehow out of nowhere, Scaloni chose the extreme opposite. Which then sparked public heated discussion, and eventually, supporters dragged the other players like Garnacho or Nico Gonzales, when In my opinion the most random thing out of this situation is the fact that Scaloni chose Angel Correa over Dybala (again, I don't mean to belittle Correa, simply just stating a fact that it's bizarre).
Call me overreacting or being a bit too dramatic, but it feels like Scaloni is using the power that he knows he has. I’m saying this because there’s no justifiable reason to explain this Dybala situation, this feels like purely a power trip from the coach.
I try to respect Scaloni’s decision, I try to be positive and supportive, I want to be level-headed in response to this news, I try not to hate the coach, I try not dragging the other players, and even try to not pity Dybala’s bad luck too, but it’s just hard.
I know, anything can still happen.
Who knows, right?
Maybe Scaloni suddenly realizes that he made a mistake and is willing to make a little change on the squad list. Maybe some players try to reason with Scaloni for him to call Dybala. Or maybe someone from the already selected strikers picks up a last-minute injury so he can’t play thus Scaloni has no other option than to replace that someone with Dybala (this is very ill thought coming from my brain, pardon not pardon). or maybe Dybala will get married to Oriana this June, so at the very least, he won’t be feeling too woeful to abstain from Copa (the last part is just my wishful thinking tho)…
At last, I'm upset knowing that Dybala out from Copa means I won't get any new content of this beloved Cordobese pair.
And for this reason alone, Scaloni, sir, what you did is a crime.
UPDATE:
No estoy llorando, tú estás llorando 😭😭😭😭

Luka Modric isn’t even that well-liked in Croatia because of his connection to this really corrupt guy, Zdravko Mamic, who got convicted of embezzlement and tax evasion. Here’s an excerpt from an ESPN article about more stuff Mamic did:
‘Mamic provided initial financial support in return for a proportion of the player's later earnings, and would be represented by his son Mario, a licensed agent. Clauses would be inserted into their contracts which stated the players would be due a cut of the transfer fee should they ever be sold. They would then use that money to pay their obligations to Mamic. In Modric's case, when he moved to Tottenham in 2008 he received €10.5million of the fee, but around €8.5million of that went to Mamic and his family. The trouble came when Mamic was accused of inserting those clauses after the players — including squad members Dejan Lovren, Sime Vrsaljko and Mateo Kovacic, along with Modric — had been sold.’
It’s also because of Modric’s connection to Mamic that he got charged with perjury in the first place. Here’s another excerpt from the same article:
‘So where does Modric come in? In June 2017 he, along with Lovren, testified in Mamic's trial. Modric said he "couldn't remember" basic details like how much he earned in his early days at Dinamo and when he made his international debut. Crucially though, he claimed that the contract clauses in question were already in place before his sale to Tottenham in 2008. However, that seemed to contradict earlier statements, which eventually led to him being charged with perjury in March of 2018.’
Here’s the article where I got my information if any of you want to read more about it:

P.S. this is my second time sending this ask, it’s because my internet is bad and I didn’t know if it sent the first time. So, sorry if you’ve already seen it. Although, I did add a little more additional information this time.
Oh wow I didn't know all these details what the hell... Thank you for sending this so more people can be informed ❤️

☕️ Croatia’s prospects at the euros
Oh anon. I'm not a very optimistic person and always assume the worst.
As always, croatia has a solid squad with good vibes--I don't consider there to be many "weak links" (other than krama, but he always winds up scoring his 1 goal per tournament for us.) joško and stani are having standout moments at shitty and granitkusen of course. between our defense and best keeper of world cup 2022 livi, it's really the goal scoring i worry about, but what else is new? there's always the slight worry about where the goals are coming from, but joško and stani are scoring for their clubs so maybe they can contribute in euros too 😂
i absolutely loathe that we have to play spain in our group, that's become my most hated team to play, instead of france. it's my hope we can at least get a medal--there's no reason why it couldn't happen, yknow? the power of teamwork and a squad that gets along with solid senior players and the most blessed captain and then talented and dedicated young players. if we can grind our way to some more heart attack inducing 1-1 with penalties (apparently, the rest of the world hates watching these?) i don't see why we can't hold our own. unless everyone decides to clown, zlatko gets stoned out of his mind making the team selection, or there's a freak injury. predictions like this make me nervous!

How good is Canada?
This year's Copa América opened with the defending Copa (and world) champions, Argentina — led by one of the greatest players of all time — against a nation that had to win a playoff match against Trinidad & Tobago to even qualify. While the world #1 ranked team emerged victorious, much of the post-match commentary focused on the positive performance of their 48th-ranked opponents, Canada.
After a 2-0 lost to La Albiceleste, the Canucks posted a victory against Peru and held on for draw against two-time champions Chile. And despite being the lowest ranked team in their group and being on no one's list to progress far within the competition, Canada advanced to the quarterfinals having scored only 1 goal throughout the entire group stage.
A quarterfinal win against Venezuela on penalties catapulted Canada to the semifinals of the oldest and one of the most prestigious international soccer competitions in the world, not to mention a rematch with Messi and Argentina. And while the Reds would once again fall short, pundits described their performance as "gutsy."
So how good is this Canada team under new head coach Jesse Marsch? Do they actually have what it takes to make some waves as they co-host the 2026 World Cup? Or are there factors beyond his control that will always limit approbations to mentions of their "effort" and "spirit"?
A History of Not Meeting the Moment
This isn't the first time Canada has gone unexpectedly deep into a tournament. They won the 1985 CONCACAF Championship to earn the confederation's lone qualification spot for the 1986 World Cup. Although they were drawn in a tough group with the Soviet Union and France, Canada still disappointed fans, losing all three of their games and failing to score a single goal.
At the 2000 Gold Cup, Canada defeated Mexico in the quarterfinals, an ascendant T&T in the semis, and guests Colombia in the finals to win the tournament — the only time a country other than the U.S. or Mexico has ever won it.
Canada was tops of CONCACAF World Cup qualifying in 2022, equalling Mexico's record but maintaining a far superior goal difference. Under coach John Herdman, the Reds rose from 72nd to 33rd in the world rankings. But their showing in Qatar was only marginally better than at Mexico '86.
While experts agreed they were the better side in their opening contest against Belgium, the team still lost 1-0. Like in their recent loss to Argentina, Canada was lauded for excellent player and for "bringing it" to one of the world's top squads. But the team would then suffer further defeats to eventual semifinalists Croatia and Morocco. The only silver lining was a goal for Alphonso Davies in the 2nd minute of the Croatia match, Canada's first in a World Cup. (The goal against Morocco was an own goal.)
Canada's history of regional success has consistently been followed by failure on the international stage. But can they break the cycle before June 12, 2026, when the first World Cup match in Canada will be played at Toronto's BMO field?
What Team Canada needs
Canada Soccer sure hopes Jesse Marsch knows how to alter the Canucks' fortunes. He may be blessed with a generation of players stronger than any other in the nation's history.
Alphonso Davies isn't a soccer superstar, but he's certainly one of the most respected players in Europe. His speed and versatility are tremendous assets for Bayern Munich, for whom he's played a key role in winning five Bundesliga titles and a Champion's league trophy. But he's the only player Canada has at that level.
Other strengths include Jonathan David, Cyle Larin, Tajon Buchanan, and Ismaël Koné, all playing in Europe's top leagues, and Toronto FC captain Jonathan Osorio.
But watching Canada play, it's clear that their talent can't compete with the top soccer-playing nations. Their finishing is sub-par. Their pass accuracy usually sits in the 75%–85% range, but they often seem to make the *wrong* passes. These are "football IQ" issues that come with experience of playing at the highest levels, something that Canada needs more opportunities for. Back-to-back World Cup appearances may help somewhat, but going deep into competitions like Copa América may be what's needed.
There's also an over-dependence on Davies in the big games, which Canada will need to overcome. That's where Jesse Marsch can really help develop things until Canada has an experiential record befitting of a top team.
Building a soccer culture
But personnel is just one piece of a much more complex, multi-dimensional puzzle. Marsch (and any future head coach) will need the support of Canada Soccer, an organization which itself may be immature and inexperienced compared to their international peers.
And, obviously, Canada needs to invest in soccer programs from the base level up, in an effort to build a culture of excellence and develop future talent.
But we can't fall into the trap of saying that Canada doesn't have a culture that supports football. Let's remember — our women's team has a historical ranking of 9th in the world, a World Cup semifinal appearance, Olympic gold, and two Olympic bronzes.
While part of that record may be attributable to the underdevelopment of women's soccer in other nations that put a lot into their men's game, we must still acknowledge the exceptional job Canadian women have done on the world stage. The 2018 decision to hire Herdman, then the women's coach, as the men's coach was evident of Canada Soccer's commitment to develop the men's game as well.
In the short-run, it may take a run of strong performances in high-level games. But Soccer Canada will need a much more robust long-term plan if Canada ever hopes to match, or even surpass, the achievements of their strongest CONCACAF peers and rivals, and — more importantly — build a reputation as a soccer nation worth taking seriously.

De la Fuente’s strategy of making ten changes to his starting eleven for the match against Albania FIFA World Cup highlighted the depth and flexibility of the Spanish squad. Despite resting key players like Alvaro Morata, Rodri, and Dani Carvajal, Spain maintained their high standards and controlled the game from the outset. The luxury of rotating the squad while still securing victories speaks volumes about the team’s quality and preparedness.

In the opening minutes, Spain dominated possession, setting the tone for the match. Despite Albania's need to take the initiative due to their precarious position in the group, it was Spain who controlled the pace and exerted pressure. Dani Olmo’s perfectly weighted pass to Torres in the 13th minute FIFA World Cup was a prime example of Spain’s ability to switch from possession-based play to a more direct approach when needed. Torres’ sublime finish highlighted the clinical edge that Spain possesses, capable of creating and converting chances out of seemingly nothing.
Albania, struggling to keep up, found themselves playing catch-up throughout the match. Although they managed more shots on target than Spain, they lacked the precision and cutting edge in the final third. Spain’s resolute defence and the timely interventions by goalkeeper David Raya ensured that Albania’s attempts to equalize were thwarted. The ability to maintain defensive solidity while rotating players is a testament to the strategic planning and preparation by de la Fuente and his coaching staff.
Strategic Rest: Spain's Depth Shines in Key Player Rotation
One of the significant talking points of the match was de la Fuente’s decision to rest key players like Alvaro Morata, Rodri, and Dani Carvajal. This move could have been risky, but the performance of the team justified the coach’s faith in his squad. The players who stepped in showcased their readiness and ability to perform under pressure. Ensuring that the absence of star players did not affect the team’s performance in FIFA World Cup 2026.

Spain's Focus on Unity and Readiness Amidst Dominant Performance
Despite topping their group with a perfect record and showcasing an impressive blend of tactical mastery. And squad depth, Spain’s coach Luis de la Fuente remains cautious about their favourite tag. To contribute highlights the team’s collective spirit and preparedness.
Torres, after winning the Player of the Match award, echoed the sentiment of unity and readiness. His comments about making selection decisions difficult for the coach reflect the healthy competition and high standards within the squad. This internal competition ensures that every player remains focused and motivated, which is crucial for sustained success in the tournament.

Is Italy Ready to Defend Their Euros Title?
Italy will arrive in Germany acutely aware that, despite being the reigning champions, they are not the favorites to win the competition again. The image of Roberto Mancini and Gianluca Vialli embracing as Italy celebrated their triumph at Wembley Stadium on July 11, 2021, remains a cherished memory for the nation. That victory was the peak of a remarkable project aimed at rejuvenating the national team. Three years later, Italy has faced numerous challenges. The nation mourned the loss of Vialli to pancreatic cancer, missed out on World Cup qualification again, and saw Mancini depart after a five-year tenure. With Euro 2024 qualification at stake, Italy turned to Luciano Spalletti, the man who led Napoli to a Serie A title after a 33-year drought. At 65, Spalletti had intended to enjoy a restful period on his Tuscan farm but could not resist the call to coach the Azzurri. Leading the national team was a dream come true, and Spalletti was enthusiastic about steering his country forward. Securing qualification wasn't straightforward. Italy finished second in Group C, behind England, clinching their spot with a goalless draw against Ukraine in the final game. Now, they face the daunting "group of death" at Euro 2024, alongside formidable opponents like Spain, experienced Croatia, and the underdog Albania. Despite being reigning champions, Italy enters Germany aware that they are not favorites to reclaim the title. Lacking world-class players and a distinct identity, Spalletti is banking on the strength of the collective and Italy's storied history in international tournaments to advance. "I don't see top-class players except Donnarumma in goal," remarked Carlo Ancelotti regarding Italy's chances at Euro 2024. In Euro 2020, Italy relied on the legendary defensive duo of Giorgio Chiellini and Leonardo Bonucci, the creativity of Marco Verratti in midfield, and the skillful forwards Lorenzo Insigne and Domenico Berardi. None of these players will be in Germany, nor will their experienced defender, Inter's Francesco Acerbi, who withdrew due to injury. Instead, Italy will depend on new faces to prove their mettle, guided by the expertise of their star coach, Spalletti. Renowned as one of Italy's finest tacticians, Spalletti's teams have always been lauded for their style of play, though he had been criticized for not winning trophies. Securing the Scudetto with Napoli while playing captivating football earned him long-deserved respect. Under his leadership, players often excel, and the team's play patterns are enticing. However, he has had limited time to craft the ideal setup for this Azzurri squad to showcase the talents of its younger players. Spalletti envisions a team adaptable to opponents, capable of playing with either three or four defenders. During the qualifiers, Italy consistently started in a 4-3-3 formation, but in recent friendlies, Spalletti experimented with a three-man backline, which has sometimes left the team vulnerable to counter-attacks. HOW THE ENGLAND FOOTBALL TEAM WENT FROM CHOCKERS TO CHALLENGERS IN 5 YEARS
A few years back, the English football team was considered a joke by many of the fans and the pundits. This occurred due to the disastrous performance of the team, not just in Internal fixtures, but in the major tournaments as well. The standard and the quality of English football had been deteriorating since the start of the century. Since 2000, there have been several low points in English football, with each being lower than the last one like not qualifying for the Euros in 2008, early elimination in the 2010 world cup and the 2014 world cup, just to name a few. In the latter, they scored just two goals, secured a solitary point in 3 games, and got knocked out in the group stages. But the moment when England hit rock bottom was in the 2016 Euro tournament.
When it came to the qualifiers of the 2016 Euro’s, there was optimism among the fans. This was due to their performance in the Qualifiers where they topped their group by winning all 10 games, scoring 28 goals, and only conceding 3. Another reason why the qualifiers was a big plus for England was because of the introduction of fresh faces such as Danny Drinkwater, Harry Kane, Jamie Vardy and the performances of John Stones, Danny Rose and Keiran Trippier in defense which resulted in England conceding only 3 goals in 10 games in the qualification stages.
But their performance in Euro 2016 of one of their worst in their entire tournament history. The finished second in a group consisting of Wales, Russia, and Slovakia, three teams who England should have beaten comfortably on paper. Instead, they drew to Russia, just got past Wales and drew 0-0 to Slovakia. There was optimism about England reaching the quarter finals as they had to face Iceland in the round of 16. But their tournament got worse as they lost 2-1 and crashed out of the Euro’s. The backlash from this tournament was heavy as several players such Raheem Sterling and Harry Kane were criticized for their poor performance and Roy Hodgson had resigned after a 4-year reign.
There were several theories formed by fans and pundits as to the reason for the poor performance of England in major tournaments. The problems were made clear from their Euro 2016 debacle. Many people felt that the team selection was wrong and people who were in the team did not deserve their place in the squad. Players such as Danny Drinkwater was left out of the Euro squad after a good performance in the league leading to a title win for Leicester city. The inclusion of Jack Wilshere had not gone down well amongst the fans either as he spent 8 months of the 2015/16 on the sidelines with an injury and had played only 141 minutes in the entire season. England had appointed Sam Allardyce as the new England manager, but he was sacked after one game after he was charged with corruption.
England appointed Gareth Southgate as their caretaker manager, following the sacking of Sam Allardyce and was made the permanent manager on 15th November 2016. This did not make England fans optimistic. The reason was because he had previously managed Middlesbrough who got relegated and he was the coach of the England under 21 team who had not been performing well under him.
Under him, they had performed well in the World cup 2018 qualifiers finishing toppers of their group with 8 wins and 2 draws out of 10 games and conceding only 3 goals. The pundits and fans were not excited about their chances in the world cup.
In the tournament, they won all 2 out 3 group games, losing to Belgium 1-0. They won in the round of 16 against Columbia in the penalty shootout and won the quarter finals against Sweden. When it came to the semifinals, England got the lead in the 5th minute through Kieran Trippier but eventually lost 2-1 to Croatia who went on to lose in the finals to France. England finished the campaign in 4th place after they lost their 3rd place playoff game against Belgium 2-0. Despite losing in the semifinal, players like Harry Kane, Kieran Trippier and Jordan Pickford drew a lot of praise for their performance in the tournament with Harry Kane winning the golden boot.
Following this their next stage of preparation was for the 2020 Euro. In the qualifiers, they had a strong performance, topping the group with 7 wins out of 8, conceding only six goals but scoring 37 goals. Fans and pundits lauded Gareth Southgate for giving chances to players who did not just play for a top six club. Players like Declan Rice, Kalvin Phillips and Jack Grealish, Dominic Calvert Lewin and Conor Coady were given their chance to shine in the qualifiers. Southgate also gave chances to youngsters such as Bukayo Saka, Jude Bellingham and Jadon Sancho were given chances in the tournament.
Going into the tournament they had an squad with an average age of a little over 25. They had a mix of experience and talented youngsters. They topped their group in Euro, won in the round of 16 against Germany, brushed aside Ukraine 4-0 in the Quarter finals, won 2-1 against Denmark in extra time through a Harry Kane goal in the 104th minute. In the final against Italy, they went ahead inside two minutes through Luke Shaw but eventually conceded from a corner which was scored by Leonardo Bonucci. The game eventually went into penalties. Pickford had made two saves in the shootout, but Italy cliched the final after misses from Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho and Bukayo Saka.
England finished the tournament as runners up, but there was a lot of appreciation from the fans and the pundits for the performance of the manager and team players, especially the youngsters. They were a laughing stock in the 2016 Euro and nearly won the 2020 Euro.
There has been steady progress that has been taking place in English football and Gareth Southgate deserves a lot of the credit for much tough decisions and giving chances to player to shine. The Euros are taking place in Germany this year and Gareth Southgate has a chance to take the England team one step further and guide them to the title before leaving his job as England Coach. England go into this tournament with a little bit of negativity, considering their performances against the big teams in the last 2 years, but this tournament is a chance for them to but these negative talks to rest.

Germany Euro Cup Team and Euro Cup Germany
Describing Germany's preparations for Euro Cup 2024 as less than ideal would be a significant understatement. Following their dismal performance that saw them fail to advance beyond the group stage in the previous year's World Cup, Die Mannschaft experienced a full-blown crisis, suffering defeat in four out of six matches in 2023. This disastrous run of form culminated in the dismissal of Hansi Flick as head coach, following an astonishing 4-1 loss on home turf to Japan.
Rudi Voller has assumed temporary coaching responsibilities, while potential candidates like Julian Nagelsmann are now being linked with the vacant position. One thing remains abundantly clear: whoever steps into this role will face a daunting task ahead. While Germany still boasts talented players, as evidenced by their morale-boosting victory in a friendly match against a France team missing Kylian Mbappe, they are undeniably a team that is a work in progress.
As Euro Cup 2024 looms on the horizon, all eyes will be on Germany to see how they navigate these challenging circumstances and evolve into a more competitive force.

Turkey Euro Cup Side
Despite maintaining their second-place position in Group D, Turkey finds themselves in a decidedly precarious situation following a 1-1 draw on their home turf against Armenia. To be frank, without a couple of last-minute goals, Turkey's aspirations for the Euro Cup 2024 qualification would be teetering on the brink.
Nevertheless, their fate remains firmly within their control. Yet, the likelihood of securing a third consecutive appearance in the European Championship will largely hinge on their performance in upcoming away matches against both Croatia and Wales. These crucial fixtures will undoubtedly determine Turkey's path to Euro Cup Germany in 2024, and the stakes couldn't be higher for this talented but vulnerable team.
Czech Republic Euro Cup Side
The Czech Republic has been absent from the World Cup stage since 2006, but they have commenced their quest to secure a spot in the eighth consecutive European Championship on a promising note. However, qualification is anything but assured, given that Jaroslav Silhavy's team still has challenging away fixtures against group leaders Albania and the formidable Robert Lewandowski-led Poland on the horizon. Nevertheless, the Czechs can draw encouragement from their unblemished record thus far in 2023, with Wolfsburg winger Vaclav Cerny exhibiting particularly impressive form.
As they continue their journey toward Euro Cup 2024, the Czech Republic's determination and resilience will be put to the test. These critical matches against strong opponents will play a pivotal role in determining their fate in Euro Cup Germany in 2024. Stay tuned for more updates as the Czech Republic endeavours to secure its place in this prestigious tournament.
Slovakia Euro Cup Side
Portugal is firmly in control of Group J, but Slovakia has positioned itself well for a shot at securing the second qualification berth by amassing an impressive 13 points out of a potential 18. Their sole defeat thus far came at home against the Selecao.
The upcoming journey to Lisbon next month presents a formidable challenge for Slovakia and garnering points there may prove to be a daunting task. However, Slovakia's destiny is likely to be determined by their subsequent visit to face third-placed Luxembourg. If they can avoid defeat in that crucial fixture, a third consecutive appearance in Euro Cup 2024 will be nearly assured for a team captained by Paris Saint-Germain defender Milan Skriniar.
As Euro Cup 2024 approaches, Slovakia's quest for qualification intensifies. The outcome of these pivotal matches will be pivotal in determining their fate in Euro Cup Germany. Stay tuned for further developments as Slovakia strives to secure their place in this prestigious tournament.
Portugal Euro Cup Side
Portugal is playing perfectly under new coach Roberto Martinez. They're six from six in qualifying, having scored 24 times without a reply. However, it's worth pointing out that they are in one of the competition's easiest groups, while it also remains to be seen if former Martinez can deliver in a major tournament, given how he wasted Belgium's 'Golden Generation'.
The key, one imagines, will be how he handles the Cristiano Ronaldo question. Goncalo Ramos clearly deserves to start ahead of the 38-year-old, who is now plying his trade in Saudi Arabia, but Martinez is likely to stick with Ronaldo, for better or for worse.
Spain Euro Cup Side
Analyzing the enigmatic Spain squad of recent times raises intriguing questions. Over the past year, they have displayed their offensive prowess by netting seven goals against Costa Rica and Georgia. Yet, they have also had moments when they appeared toothless against teams like Morocco and Scotland. Although a surprising defeat in Glasgow added a layer of complexity to their qualification path, La Roja is still expected to navigate through with relative ease.
While Alvaro Morata does not guarantee goals consistently, he is currently in good form. Furthermore, Spain boasts a remarkable contingent of Barcelona's young talents, featuring the likes of Pedri (20), Gavi (19), Alejandro Balde (19), and Lamine Yamal (16). Essentially, no one would relish being drawn into the same group as Luis de la Fuente's Nations League champions, as they retain the ability to dominate possession even against the world's best teams.
As Euro Cup 2024 approaches, the unpredictability of Spain's performance adds to the intrigue of the tournament. Their combination of established stars and promising youth makes them a formidable force, capable of making a deep run in Euro Cup Germany. Stay tuned for more exciting updates as Spain's journey unfolds on the grand stage of Euro Cup 2024.

Austria Euro Cup Side
Austria is on the brink of securing their spot in Euro Cup 2024, with mathematical certainty within reach after a remarkably convincing 3-1 triumph in Sweden. In this impressive victory, veteran striker Marko Arnautovic found the net for the visiting team. The Austrian squad initially faced challenges under the leadership of Ralf Rangnick.
However, they have shown substantial improvement under the former Manchester United manager, and if they manage to defeat Belgium in Vienna next month, they are poised to emerge as Group F winners on their path to Euro Cup Germany in 2024.
Austria is on the cusp of securing their berth in Euro Cup 2024, with mathematical certainty nearly assured following an impressive 3-1 victory in Sweden. In this remarkable win, the experienced striker Marko Arnautovic found the back of the net for the visiting team.
Their journey to Euro Cup Germany 2024 has been marked by considerable progress, especially under the stewardship of former Manchester United boss Ralf Rangnick.
