Wildflower: 04
The Secret Garden
John Wick x Reader
Category: Short Series
Warnings: None really but creepy, questionable behaviour (what else do you expect in a yandere fic?)
Note: John is relatively younger in this fic( late thirties to early forties)
(The GIF is not mine, credit to the owner. Sorry, my pea-sized brain cannot keep up from where I downloaded it.)
Unedited
Wildflower 03
“You have given her the card?”
Another hit, another night at the Continental, another dinner with Winston.
The older man nodded, continuing to eat, eyes on his plate before they rose to meet John’s intrigued ones.
“You know that the card means…”
“She is under my protection and the hotel’s doors are always open for her— services included.” Winston completed.
“She’s a civilian, Winston.”
John could not get it. Winston seldom gave his personal ‘Access Card’ (As he liked to call it) to anyone– even in their world. John had it, Charon had it and he did not know of anyone else who had it until…Until two nights ago.
When he saw it among (Y/N)’s possessions, he had to look twice. It was, Winston's card, after all, and she fucking carried it around in her bag like an idiot.
“And how did you come to know about the card? I had it shipped to her discreetly.”
Well, that was the question he was dreading. But he would not let it show.
“I bumped into her during…a job.” He did not elaborate and hoped he would not need to.
“Wrong time, wrong place?”
John nodded. Fortunately, she had just caught the panicked rush. And she had dropped her bag somewhere along the way. John could only imagine what could have happened if the bag fell into the wrong hands– if the card fell into the wrong hands.
He had only gone through the contents to decide where to drop the bag safely. He totally did not go through her home address and ID.
Winston only hummed and continued to eat. His question, though, was still unanswered.
“She has nothing to do with our world, Winston. She does not need that.”
“Well she walked into our world, had a meeting with me, sat with us at the underground bar— everyone there saw it. I respected Artemis, and I wanted to keep my word.”
Yes, she walked into their world. Like a fucking lamb stumbling into a slaughterhouse. John sighed and continued to eat his dinner. He would rather eat by himself, in the confinement of his room, but he did not mind Winston. Besides, a dinner invitation from the manager of Continental held great significance.
He liked the silence and slowed thoughts when he was in his company, doing mundane things. Like a normal human being. That was the closest to an ordinary life he could ever get. The rest was unattainable luxury.
But in recent days. Even in the comfort of silence and solitude, his mind was filled with a certain name, a certain smile. A certain face. A certain voice.
It felt so uncharacteristic of him— it was puzzling. His hold tightened on the knife and fork, the image of her confused face as she looked around people rushing flashed in his mind.
Not again. Not again!
Gulping some wine, he tried to clear his head. He was thinking like that again. He should not be thinking like that.
She is a civilian. An innocent civilian.
He chided himself.
“Something troubling you Jonathan?”
Of course, Winston would notice.
He looked up and sighed in silence. Thankfully, Winston did not poke further.
—------
(Y/N) admitted that there were a lot of things she had not prepared herself for before moving to New York— the basics were, thankfully, sorted out in her head. And yet, the pace of life, the mouse problem, more cockroaches, and the general indifference came to her as bumps and jerks. But all was good.
Everything was good until two days ago.
Nothing prepared her for a literal shootout at a subway station and losing her bag in the process. Thankfully, she was not caught in the middle of the crossfire— it was just the panicked rush just outside the crime scene.
But what she was more thankful about, was the fact that a kind officer brought her bag to her doorstep by the same evening. Her wallet was in that bag with her address. She did not wish to think what would happen if it fell into the wrong hands. Crime in the city ran rampant.
She had heard of it, not much on the news, but more as whispers floating around in her relatively quieter town. But she never paid much heed to them. She had treated them as rumours— the news did not show much, after all. The news did not show even half of it. But above all, the general public’s indifference to such crimes baffled her.
Did they not want their city safe? Were they not afraid? What era was it?
She reflected on Alex’s words. They discussed the same.
“You eventually grow immune to it.”
He had told her. Not very helpful, but that was an explanation of some sort. People in the city must have grown immune to it— they learned to live with it. But could she grow indifferent as well? She did not think so.
But there was too much at stake. She did not wish to return to her hometown, was still not talking to her father other than one-worded texts, had a job in New York that paid well–enough, had already signed the recent contract and paid two months of rent and the overall living cost of the city kissed the skies and any spontaneous decision would end up burning her pocket— not just a hole in her pocket.
So, the only option left was to get up, dust herself and keep moving. Yet, among all the chaos, she was glad to have found a friend like Alex. His humour and insight always helped. Her thoughts moved to her encounter with John Wick a few days ago. Clearly, Alex and John knew each other. But Alex never elaborated other than calling John an ‘acquaintance’ and John…well, she might as well admit that she would be reluctant to approach him under most circumstances.
There was— she could not put a pin on it. But there was something almost ominous about that man. The way he looked, the way he spoke, the way he stood, carried himself— every aspect about him seemed to stand out. Not enough to gain immediate attention, but enough to steer clear of his way.
Now, that did not make sense. She realised. Neither did her observation that there was still something inexplicably melancholic about that man. His eyes were unreadable but sharp and so eerily calm that his gaze made her gulp– true. But there was a deep sense of sadness. It was subtle, but it was so ever-present that it seemed to have become a part of him. Nothing temporary but an inseparable part of him.
Now, that’s a bit of a stretch!
She chided herself. What was she doing? Wondering about a man she had met only a couple of times, weaving assumptions and stories?
She shook her head and took the last bite of her dinner. She missed how dinners were timely back in her home. She missed her home a lot, she was not afraid to admit it. But she was too proud to go back. So, whatever it was, she needed to get along with it.
—---
What was he doing?
John was at a fix. He had the night to himself— a chance to relax but why was he not under the covers, relaxing on his bed?
Why was he standing in the darkest corner of the room, watching her sleeping form? Her apartment was decent, he noticed and she was careless enough to not even feel a presence in her room.
What if it were someone else?
Someone dangerous?
You are dangerous.
His subconscious mocked.
John blinked, trying to convince himself that it was all for Winston’s sake— he had taken her under his wing and John, being close to Winston, must play his part in protecting her. Especially when wolves were lurking around, one had followed her from the Continental, sniffing behind, wrapping a sheep’s skin over to lure her near.
Alex Norton…
He was skilled with poison and guns, and while John had never crossed paths with him at work, they had shared a few respectful nods now and then at the Continental. But now…
Now he was keeping an eye out for Norton.
John gulped, keeping his eyes fixed on her form. If he could keep his reservations aside, he understood Norton’s fascination with the girl.
They were both starved creatures from hell, crawling out now and then, and she was an angel, offering the solace he knew he did not deserve.
She offered what people like him were deprived of. It was tempting to just pull her into the depths of the dark with him, let her light it up— but how unfair, how cruel would that be?
Did he not see and endure enough cruelty? Why would he want an innocent civilian to lose their privileges just because one starving, deformed, empty soul had suddenly realised how impossibly bleak and bitter his world was?
No, John had made peace with this life. He would not call himself ‘the best’, but he knew he was good—- good enough to win special privileges at the New York Continental– to win the confidence of Winston Scott.
He never truly understood Winston, or his ways.
As far as he knew, Artemis was like any other patron at the Continental and had been a part of the underground before he officially left his…tribe, in search of freedom— some semblance of it at least. He had it now, and it was the best he could get.
He must make peace with it.
He stared at the asleep woman for a good minute before looking away. He needed to leave. He wanted to leave. He really wanted…
John sighed and leaned against the wall instead.
He would just watch, and observe. He would keep a distance. Like he should.
****
So, we are getting at creepy John, I don't want it to be too slow, but I also want it to be realistically paced. I don't know hat I'm doing, but I am doing it anyway.

Mae Anderson at AP, via NewsNation:
NEW YORK (AP) — The U.S. Justice Department has filed an antitrust lawsuit against Visa, alleging that the financial services behemoth uses its size and dominance to stifle competition in the debit card market, costing consumers and businesses billions of dollars.
The complaint filed Tuesday says San Francisco-based Visa penalizes merchants and banks who don’t use Visa’s own payment processing technology to process debit transactions, even though alternatives exist. Visa earns an incremental fee from every transaction processed on its network. According to the DOJ’s complaint, 60% of debit transactions in the United States run on Visa’s debit network, allowing it to charge over $7 billion in fees each year for processing those transactions. “We allege that Visa has unlawfully amassed the power to extract fees that far exceed what it could charge in a competitive market,” said Attorney General Merrick B. Garland in a statement. “Merchants and banks pass along those costs to consumers, either by raising prices or reducing quality or service. As a result, Visa’s unlawful conduct affects not just the price of one thing – but the price of nearly everything.”
In a statement, Julie Rottenberg, Visa’s general counsel, said the lawsuit doesn’t take into account the “ever expanding universe of companies offering new ways to pay for goods and services.” “Today’s lawsuit ignores the reality that Visa is just one of many competitors in a debit space that is growing, with entrants who are thriving,” Rottenberg said. She added the lawsuit is “meritless” and the company will defend itself “vigorously.” The Biden administration has aggressively gone after U.S. companies that it says act like middlemen, such as Ticketmaster parent Live Nation and the real estate software company RealPage, accusing them of burdening Americans with nonsensical fees and anticompetitive behavior. The administration has also brought charges of monopolistic behavior against technology giants such as Apple and Google.
DOJ sues Visa in an antitrust lawsuit on the basis that the card issuer has de facto monopolized the debit and credit card markets.

Processing: thoughts & feelings
I just spent the night hanging out with all my cousins and now I'm all wound up and idk how to decompress this energy I feel like I need to run laps around the house and scream a lil bit
I love my cousins and I wish I lived closer so I could spend more time with them
I just got in bed and my legs are doing that natural casual thigh gap and I love it so much
Thinking about what's coming next (TX gig and then either FL or Colorado /something familar and predictable or something new and different???? how to decide?) -> ((Apply for the CO position and see if they get back to you before you start making plans for it)) ... Thinking about arranging an Airbnb for TX and all of that; $1.7k on the credit card from the past couple months, yikes, wasn't expecting it to be that high but also kinda spending willy nilly and not paying attention; grateful that I have money in the bank to cover it but sad to see that number in the bank drop so low all at once lol but grateful that the next gig will replenish it plus double maybe; if I take the next 3 gigs with this company I'll for sure end up with an extra $5k by the end of it, not sure how many hours the CO gig would provide and idk if they do overtime or any of that, but it would be a new experience gaining new skills and working in a new environment, what's more valuable, straight dollars in the bank or life experience on top of maybe less dollars but still getting paid + housing etc ? Thinking about, I'd spend the whole winter with D, last time we worked together it didn't really go well but we've both grown and changed since then, but have I really changed that much ? ; vs my next chance to see L would be the FL gig if I take it; plus my mom lives in FL so I was planning to visit her between gigs, vs being in CO from Oct - March basically. Wondering if the van can even handle the mountains + winter environment; (gotta take it to the mechanic before driving to TX and I should've called last week but I didn't and now I'm gonna be stressed about it next week) (its gonna be fine it's all working out) ... Give it time to unravel and see what feels right. If CO has less hours of work, that's more hours to go out snowboarding haha. Alternatively, should I just work all winter in jobs I know are going to pay me well, and take more time off next year having fun ?? (No bc I know this job is gonna pay me and if I have the opportunity to make a bunch of money for the next couple months shouldn't I take advantage of that?) Idk. Let it simmer, see how the path unfolds.
Relax. Breathe. I'm here right now, I'm spending time with my family, I have options. So grateful to be here and now !!!!!!!
I can hear the waves and feel the salty humid breeze through my open window; the bugs and frogs are chirping, the air is calm. I love my life. Soon I'll be in Texas and everything will be different. (3 weeks before I get there, going camping with D in New York first, visiting my brother and grandparents after, then casually meandering halfway across the country). Same gig as last year but different circumstances; nice to have a bit of familiarity plus a bit of change, keeps things interesting, who knows how it's gonna go :)
Might go smoke some actual bud so I can relax and go to sleep lol it's 1am and we gotta be back over there at like 10 am for breakfast; I love my family I'm so glad I'm in town for this gathering bc it sounds like I might not be here for thanksgiving and that's usually the only time I get to see them throughout the year; I guess I could make more effort at other times of the year... Idk. Breathe, relax. I'm glad to be here. Life is so good.
Thinking about: I gotta call R and talk about our relationship bc I'm not being fair to him and it's weighing on the back of my mind. Thinking about: I only want polyamorous relationships going forward and I need to be more clear about that before I let a man get so attached. Thinking about, wanting to call M and talk to him for some reason... Thinking about, if I end up taking the Miami gig in December I need to go reconnect with his mom lmfao. Thinking about: I'm so god damn grateful for my fucking family bro like that is so uncommon and I don't even know how to express my gratitude that every single one of my family members is an A+ standup human!!!! I love them so much!!!!! It's beautiful and amazing and my life would be so different if I didn't have so many amazing wonderful individuals making up this weird crazy web of love and connection!!!! Thinking about, yeah I want a partner eventually but I'm also grateful for this journey being single floating around following all my whims and desires. Thinking about how small and confined my life felt 4 years ago and how wide open it is today. Thinking about M talking about depression on his ig story earlier today, thinking about reaching out to him soon and checking in, wishing I could go visit and reconnect but I feel like that would be weird but I really wanna sit down and talk about life all night and I really wanna see the cat again... But I don't really wanna go to NYC lmfao so idk.
Thinking about the Airbnb for ACL and getting to connect with new friends if we can get it to work out.
I keep hitting the nicotine vape and it's 1am and maybe I should smoke weed and put the phone down and sleep lol. Sit outside and listen to bugs and feel the breeze and let my brain slow down. Tomorrow is another day with the family, all week really; one day at a time. Relax & breathe :) life is good and it's unfolding and right now I'm here and in another week I'll be somewhere else.

Venmo Limits, Fee, and How to Pay with Venmo Balance
Millions of people use the Venmo app to transfer money, split bills, and more. Venmo is a money transfer and payment app that lets you split bills, make payments, receive direct deposits, and transfer money. Users can buy, sell, and hold cryptocurrency and make in-store payments with the Venmo Debit Card or Venmo Credit Card. The company also offers business payment solutions.
Venmo was founded in 2009 and is headquartered in New York City. It’s currently only available to US residents. Use it to send money across the US, but you can’t use it to send international money transfers.
How do I request and send money through the Venmo app?
It’s easy to request and send money through Venmo. Here’s how it works:
Login to your Venmo account.
Select the button that says Pay or Request at the bottom of the screen.
Select the recipient. There are 4 ways to do this: (1) Login with Facebook to access your Facebook contacts, (2) give the app permission to access your phone contacts, (3) scan your recipient’s unique Venmo QR code on their phone or (4) lookup people’s names or usernames using the app’s search function, which can be located by tapping the hamburger icon at the top of the screen.
Add a custom message (optional).
Adjust the visibility settings of your transaction using the Privacy button, which appears above the Request/Pay buttons towards the bottom of the screen. You can allow the transaction to be visible to everyone, your friends, or just yourself and the recipient (default).
Select either Request or Pay.
View your Venmo account balance. Funds will be taken from here first. If the balance is insufficient, the full amount will be taken from the bank account or card linked to your account. You can’t use multiple payment methods to fund a single payment.
Hit Send to submit the transaction.
How do I add funds to my Venmo account?
To transfer funds directly into your Venmo account, you must have a Venmo Debit Card. Transfers take three to five business days. There’s no option to transfer funds instantly.
If you don’t have a Venmo Debit Card, your account balance is any funds you’ve received through Venmo transfers from friends, assuming those funds haven’t been moved out of your account to a linked bank account or card.
Venmo limits
There is no Venmo limit per day. However, there are weekly limits to the amount of money you can transfer and withdraw from your account.
By default, the Venmo transfer limit for person-to-person transfers is $299.99 per week. When you verify your identity, the Venmo limit rises to $4,999.99 per week for person-to-person transfers and $6,999.99 for all types of Venmo transactions.
Verify your identity in the app, but you must have a Social Security number (SSN) or Individual Tax Payer Identification Number (ITIN). Usually, the process only takes a few minutes.
Withdrawals from Venmo to a bank account are limited to $999.99. Once you’ve verified your identity, the Venmo weekly limit raises to $19,999, or $2,999.99 for each transfer.
What happens when someone sends me money through Venmo
Funds sent to your account via Venmo will appear in your account balance. Payments that appear in green show money that has entered your Venmo account, while payments in red show money that has left your Venmo account.
Withdraw funds from Venmo to a bank account, credit card, debit card, or prepaid card. Prepaid cards must be branded by a network like American Express, Discover, Mastercard, or Visa. You can’t link a PayPal account to Venmo.
Follow these steps to withdraw funds from your Venmo account:-
Login to Venmo.
Select the menu (hamburger icon) on the top, right of the screen. You’ll be able to view your account balance.
Select the type of transfer you want. Instant transfers take up to 30 minutes but cost a fee. Standard transfers are free but take one to three business days to arrive.
Hit the green transfer button at the bottom of the screen. If successful, a green checkmark will appear.
Verify that funds have left your Venmo account by hitting the menu once again and viewing your account balance.
Venmo fees
The following fees apply to personal nonbusiness Venmo money transfers:-
Fee type:-
Money transfer funded by Venmo balance, bank account, or debit card- Free
Money transfer funded by credit card- 3% of the transfer amount
Standard electronic withdrawal (1-3 business days)- Free
Instant electronic withdrawal (up to 30 minutes)- 1.5% (minimum $0.25, maximum $15.00)
Transaction declined (insufficient funds)-$0.00
Is Venmo international?
No. Currently, Venmo is only available to users who reside in the US, so you can only use it to send domestic money transfers. You can’t use Venmo to send an international money transfer.
Can I use Venmo for business?
Yes. Create a business profile with Venmo, so you can begin accepting payments from clients and customers online, in person, or via Venmo’s app. Payments work the same for both personal and business transactions, so customers can continue using the app as they normally would.

"Embarking on My International Internship Adventure: A Journey Begins"
Deciding to take the plunge and pursue an internship abroad is one of those choices that is both thrilling and nerve-wracking. For me, this journey began around November when I started searching for opportunities to intern beyond the Netherlands. It wasn't that companies at home weren't enticing; I just felt a need for something fresh and challenging. An international internship seemed like the perfect way to expand my horizons in the film industry while adding a dash of adventure.
Using a Mediator
Early in my quest, I discovered The Intern Group, an organization that immediately stood out to me. Their offer of weekend activities to help interns bond, along with other amenities and support, really piqued my interest. After reaching out to them, they responded promptly, and we had multiple calls to confirm I was a good match for their program. I was accepted pretty quickly, and by mid-January, I had secured an official offer from KVIBE studios where I’d be interning.
Preparing for the move, however, involved many steps. First and foremost, I needed to find accommodation. As someone who values personal space, I decided against the shared housing offered by The Intern Group. Instead, I scoured listings on websites like Zillow and Airbnb, eventually finding an Airbnb that was both private and affordable.
Navigating Bureaucracy and Logistics
Getting my visa was probably the most daunting part of the process. After submitting a last-minute expedited request, there was an anxious period of waiting, hoping everything would be approved in time. My appointment was just days before my planned departure, so I had to delay booking my flight until I had my visa in hand. Thankfully, it all came through, though it was an incredibly stressful experience.
Once the visa issue was sorted, I turned my attention to finances. I applied for a credit card for emergencies and arranged travel and health insurance—an odd but necessary task since Dutch health insurance wouldn’t cover me in the U.S. after a few weeks. It's worth mentioning that insurance issues seem endless; even now, I get occasional emails about needing different coverage.
Packing and Emotional Goodbyes
With just a week left before my departure, reality began to sink in. My last day at my barista job in Rotterdam was a blend of emotions—made even more intense when my family and friends surprised me with a farewell party. I'm not usually one for parties, but this heartfelt gesture made me feel supported as I began this new chapter. We shared laughs, drinks, and some bittersweet goodbyes, making it a day I cherish.
When it came to packing, I decided to bring my gaming PC, which proved to be quite the logistical challenge. Taking it in my suitcase wasn’t an option, so I had to ship it separately. Getting it ready for shipment across the Atlantic felt like an adventure in itself.
Settling into the New Environment
Upon arriving in the U.S., the reality of being in a new country hit me. Finding my driver in the hectic airport was an adventure in itself, but eventually, I made it to my Airbnb in Union City, New Jersey. This location turned out to be perfect, given its proximity to my internship at KVIBE studios in Jersey City.
Exploring Manhattan in the early days was unforgettable. The city’s mix of crowded yet spacious streets was something uniquely New York. Comparing it to the narrow bustle of Amsterdam’s streets was inevitable, but Manhattan's vibe was so different and captivating.
Preparing for an internship abroad was a whirlwind of tasks, from finding housing to securing the right insurance and navigating personal farewells. Despite the hectic pace and occasional moments of doubt, the entire process has been deeply rewarding, setting the stage for an amazing professional experience and imparting invaluable life lessons. To anyone considering a similar path, I wholeheartedly say go for it! This preparation period, though challenging, is the gateway to an adventure-filled chapter of your life.
There’s so much more to explore and experience, and I can't wait to share the next steps in my journey. Stay tuned!

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott boasted shortly after he began soliciting private donations for his controversial migrant busing program that there would likely "be no cost to the state" given the outpouring of support from concerned citizens across the country.
But after nearly two years of fundraising to offset the program's costs, Abbott's operation has collected less than half of 1% of the roughly $150 million spent on busing migrants to sanctuary cities, according to a review of state records.
And CNN found that the largest donation – $900,000 – never made it into the state's coffers, either because it was a mistake or a prank.
Records show that at most, around $550,000 has been raised to date.
The data provided by the state reflected donations submitted online or by mail through check, credit card or bank transfer, not funds actually received by the state - meaning the data could contain donations that were rejected by banks and credit companies during processing. Reporters tried to reach the woman behind the supposed $900,000 donation, but they could not locate the person with the name provided, and the phone number submitted to state officials was disconnected.
Abbott's office published a running tally online to show how willing people were to support his program. After the $900,000 contribution was submitted online in September, the website showed that donations had reached more than $1.3 million, but in December, the tally was readjusted – dropping back down to around $460,000.
CNN also spoke with another donor listed in the data who confirmed he did not make the $2,000 donation listed under his name. Yet another donor showed reporters a letter he said he received from the state after complaining that his $1,000 donation to the state border wall fund had been instead allocated to the busing efforts.
The governor's office did not respond to CNN's questions about the mystery donation, other discrepancies and whether any of the other donations listed in the state data did not come through.
Since the busing program started, Texas taxpayers have largely footed the bill. The governor's office says it has transported more than 100,000 migrants from Texas to sanctuary cities around the nation, including New York City, Chicago, Washington, DC and Denver. Given the payments made to private contractors so far as detailed in public records, this means it has cost about $1,500 to move each migrant out of the state.
Immigration advocates have slammed this operation as a dangerous and inhumane publicity stunt, and sanctuary city mayors have also fought back against Abbott's program, instituting regulations about when and where the buses can drop off migrants, as the cities have struggled to meet the needs of the sudden influx of asylum seekers. Last year, a 3-year-old migrant girl died while on a bus to Chicago as part of Abbott's busing program, and a 10-year-old girl was reportedly hospitalized the prior year due to dehydration and a high fever while on a bus to Philadelphia.
Securing the border has been a hot button issue as the presidential election nears. While many Republicans have lambasted President Joe Biden for not doing enough to stop migrants from crossing the border, some immigration advocates and attorneys say he has actually made it too difficult for migrants to go through the legal process to seek asylum in the country.
Aside from the unfulfilled $900,000 contribution, the largest donation in the records came just last month from Wyoming megadonor Timothy Mellon, an heir to the Mellon family fortune. Mellon donated $50,000 to the busing program, far less than the tens of millions of dollars that the Texas Tribune reportedhe contributed to the state's border wall fund. He has also donated millions to Super PACs supporting presidential candidates Donald Trump and Robert F. Kennedy Jr. this year alone, according to Federal Election Commission filings. He did not respond to a request for comment.
CNN reached some of the donors on the list who confirmed they had made the donations and said they strongly believed in the governor's mission.
Texas engineer Ronald Roche, who has donated $500 to the fund, said Abbott's busing initiative has become necessary because the federal government has failed to address "this migrant problem." He first learned about the efforts watching the news and said that while he was compelled to donate, he is also supportive of state taxpayer funds being used.
"States have a right to protect themselves," he said. "If the federal government's not doing it up to the level, I think any state… ought to use their own money. And that's money well spent."
While the bulk of the donations in which a state was listed came from those living in Texas, residents in other states – such as Mellon – also offered support.
"This isn't just a Texas problem," said Peter D'Amato, a property manager in South Carolina, who donated $100. "Texas drew the short straw being on the border, but it's a national issue and they need some relief, and these folks need to find refuge in the sanctuary cities that invite them."
Samay Rajan Verma, a 19-year-old college sophomore at Elmhurst University, a Christian college in Illinois, told CNN he supported the program because he wants people to "see the value of legal immigration," saying his Punjabi parents entered the country legally and had to re-start their schooling. "They did a lot just to be here and to be successful in the United States. … I feel like the American people aren't really realizing that this is really a slap on the face of all the legal immigrants that came here." Verma donated $25 to Abbott's efforts.
A $2,000 donation, meanwhile, was listed as coming from a progressive Washington, DC climate activist named Hendrik Voss.
When reached by CNN on the phone number provided to the state, Voss said he was shocked – then angry – to hear that he was listed in the donation data.
"I can say with 1,000% certainty that I've never given a cent to Gov. Abbott's dehumanizing and racist publicity stunts," he said in an interview. In reaction to the news, he said he had made an immediate donation to a local nonprofit to help support migrants who are being bused to DC.
CNN's Casey Tolan contributed to this report.

New York’s New Credit Card Surcharge Law Is In Effect: Here’s What It Means For Customers and Businesses
— By Vaughn Golden and Emily Crane | February 12, 2024
A New Law Requiring New York Businesses to Clearly Display the Total Cost of Purchasing Items with a Credit Card — Including Any Surcharges — Is in Full Swing. As of Sunday, businesses in the Empire State are required to disclose any additional credit card surcharges before a customer begins to check out.
The businesses can either post the total price, inclusive of the credit card surcharges, or list the different prices for both card and cash payments for items.
“As more New Yorkers use credit cards and EBT [electronic benefit transfer] products to purchase goods and services, pricing transparency is critical for consumers to make informed decisions at the register,” state Sen. Jeremy Cooney (D-Rochester), who helped spearhead the legislation, told The Post.
“My legislation was designed to help people better understand the total cost — not just a processing fee percentage — and to be protected from surprise fees at checkout.”

The law, which was signed by Gov. Kathy Hochul in December, also prevents shop owners from charging customers more in credit card surcharges than what the business is charged by the processing companies.
Under the new requirements, businesses can’t simply post a sign on the door, or at the register, stating that there is an additional 3.9% surcharge for credit cards.
They have to clearly spell out how much the additional percentage will set the customer back, meaning the businesses can’t have a price tag saying: “$10.00, + 4 percent if paying with a credit card.”

“New Yorkers should never have to deal with hidden credit card costs, and this law will ensure individuals can trust that their purchases will not result in surprise surcharges,” Hochul said in a statement last week as she warned of the upcoming changes.
“Transparency is crucial in building trust between businesses and communities and now patrons will be empowered to budget accordingly.” The law doesn’t apply to debit cards.
