As I grew older, I lost my creativity. I lost my sense of wonder and nonsense. My world was crushed by people telling me things that brought me down and I listened to them. I gave up projects and ideas because of them. Finally I am have positive people in my life who support me and tell me positive things instead of tear me down. I sometimes wonder where family heirlooms come from. What exactly decides the significance? How long must someone keep an object for it to become special? My grandmother is old, but not frail enough to stop moving yet, and she has one too many things. Stacks and stacks of junk waiting on a tipping point called balance line her closet, her garage, her unused upstairs bedrooms. When we were at her house one summer, she pulled out a box of costume jewelry. Nothing too expensive or significant lain in it. But riffling through it, my sister and cousin’s hands crowding in, I found a silver star. Never once since then did I take it off, and I suppose that’s what makes significance. How much something matters to you.
