(via Inside the Story of How H-E-B Planned for the Pandemic – Texas Monthly)
... We’ve seen chains struggle with the challenges the current crisis presents. Some stores are instituting policies limiting the numbers of shoppers allowed in at a time, creating long waits to enter. Perhaps even worse, other stores are not, leaving their shops a free-for-all without adequate social distancing measures. Staples like flour and yeast, to say nothing of hand sanitizer and toilet paper, are proving difficult to find on shelves. Supply chains are taxed. And the conditions faced by employees vary wildly by chain, with stores developing new (sometimes controversial) policies around sick leave for the workers who have proved themselves essential, and often doing so on the fly.
San Antonio-based H-E-B has been a steady presence amid the crisis. The company began limiting the amounts of certain products customers were able to purchase in early March; extended its sick leave policy and implemented social distancing measures quickly; limited its hours to keep up with the needs of its stockers; added a coronavirus hotline for employees in need of assistance or information; and gave employees a $2 an hour raise on March 16, as those workers, many of whom are interacting with the public daily during this pandemic, began agitating for hazard pay. ...
... On January 15, Wuhan’s Municipal Health Commission announced that the novel coronavirus was spreading via human-to-human transmission.
Justen Noakes: So when did we start looking at the coronavirus? Probably the second week in January, when it started popping up in China as an issue. We’ve got interests in the global sourcing world, and we started getting reports on how it was impacting things in China, so we started watching it closely at that point. We decided to take a harder look at how to implement the plan we developed in 2009 into a tabletop exercise. On February 2, we dusted it off and compared the plan we had versus what we were seeing in China, and started working on step one pretty heavily.
Craig Boyan: Starting in January, we’ve been in close contact with several retailers and suppliers around the world. As this has started to emerge, we’ve been in close contact with retailers in China, starting with what happened in Wuhan in the early couple of months, and what kind of lessons they learned. Over the last couple of months, [we’ve been] in close contact with some of our Italian retailers and suppliers, understanding how things have evolved in Italy and now in Spain, talking to those countries that are ahead of us in the curve. We’ve been in daily contact, understanding the pace and the change and the need for product, and how things have progressed in each of those countries. ...
It's horrifying that a grocery store company is far better prepared and has far better policies than our so-called gov't!

Bilderberg Group meets just outside of DC as Deep State steps up war on Trump. Here’s the attendee list.
Photo: Public Domain
Top global political and business leaders of the Bilderberg Group will meet just miles from the White House this week, as “Deep State” actions to take down President Donald Trump grow more intense.
“The Bilderberg Group meeting in Chantilly, Virginia, will attract 131 elites on Thursday – from politicians and bankers to business titans and European royalty,” The Daily Mail reports. “They will discuss transatlantic relations, the future of the European Union and ‘a progress report’ on the Trump administration behind closed doors at the four-day meeting.”
It has not been revealed what the “progress report” on Trump means. Chantilly, in suburban D.C., is 30 miles from Washington.
Among those participating in this year’s Bilderberg Group meeting are Trump’s Secretary of Commerce Wilbur Ross, Trump’s National Security Adviser H.R. McMaster, Trump advisers Peter Thiel and David Petraeus, U.S. Senator Lindsay Graham and Obama CIA Director John Brennan.
The meeting comes as leaks from within the U.S. government’s security community, intended to cripple President Trump, worsen.
“At least 180 federal employees have signed up for a workshop next weekend, where experts will offer advice on workers’ rights and how they can express civil disobedience,” former Clinton administration Labor Secretary Robert Reich gleefully notes.
“Federal workers are in regular consultation with recently departed Obama-era political appointees about what they can do to push back against the new president’s initiatives…,” Reich notes, “…The State Department has emerged as the nexus of opposition to Trump’s refugee policy, in part because it has an official dissent channel where Foreign Service employees can register opposition without fear of reprisals. The channel, formed in 1971, has been used to raise policy objections to the Vietnam War and other conflicts. Several hundred employees signed the dissent cable objecting to Trump’s refugee policy.”

Michael Leas, stock controller, store number 351, Edna: My overnight crew, they’re just coming in, and it seems like they’re ready. They just ask me what I need them to do. I haven’t had very many complaints from the guys or anything. It’s been really nice. You can tell that they understand it’s not our fault; this is just something that’s happening.

H‑E‑B Surpasses 100,000 Partner Milestone
H‑E‑B has announced the growth of its partner (employee) population across Texas and Mexico, totaling more than 100,000. The growth confirms its position as the largest privately held employer in the state of Texas and one of the largest privately held retailers in the nation. H‑E‑B employs more than 90,000 partners in 332 Texas stores and more than 10,000 partners in 56 stores throughout Mexico.
"This milestone represents our deep commitment to improving the lives of Texans and their families, and creating a work environment that brings the spirit of community to life every day while encouraging innovation, engagement and success," says Craig Boyan, president and COO. "It takes great people to build a great company, and we look forward to providing even more Texans with meaningful career opportunities that bring new experiences, growth and lifelong connections at H‑E‑B."
H‑E‑B is also celebrating the anniversary of the Partner Stock Plan, an employee ownership plan that rewards the hard work, dedication and loyalty of H‑E‑B partners. To be eligible, a partner must be at least 21 years old, have completed at least one year of service and have worked at least 1,000 hours in a calendar year. In the first year, plan participants received an allocation equal to 3 percent of the participant's eligible pay and $100 for each year of service. To celebrate the anniversary, plan participants have once again received an additional allocation equal to 3 percent of the participant's eligible pay.
"In business and in life, people matter most," says Tina James, senior vice president for human resources for H‑E‑B. "Though simple, this philosophy has shaped H‑E‑B for 112 years. It's why we call our employees partners—because we work together to achieve success and create a strong sense of pride within our stores and throughout the more than 300 communities we serve."
Since the economic slowdown in 2008, H‑E‑B has invested in Texas and created more than 24,000 jobs. A strong workforce keeps stores running efficiently, allowing H‑E‑B to offer customers friendly service, quality products and low prices every time they shop.
Countless H‑E‑B partners join the company as hourly employees and work up to salaried manager positions in just a few years' time, while many turn to H‑E‑B as a first job or a flexible option to work while pursuing higher education.
With current operations totaling 388 stores companywide, H‑E‑B continues to grow and serve more communities throughout Texas and Mexico. In 2017, the company plans to add nine new stores in Texas and six new stores in Mexico, contributing hundreds of jobs to the local economies.
H‑E‑B's continued commitment to its partners and customers earned the company a spot on the 2017 Temkin Experience Ratings and on this year's list of Glassdoor's best places to work in the nation.
