Hey do you happen to know which rapid tests are recommended as safe at the moment?
I'll dig around a bit and see if I can find the latest efficacy study, but cost-wise, you should probably invest in molecular tests like Metrix or Lucria. They have close to 99% accuracy and are meant to be one-and-done, and rapid antigen tests are unreliable unless used for serial testing. It will cost you more money and time to assure a negative with a RAT than with a metrix test: Metrix refills cost ~$15 and are ~95% accurate while each while a two pack of RATs off the shelf at a pharmacy will cost you upwards of $20 and have variable accuracy that seems to be maxing out around 60% in best case scenarios and are prone to false negatives unless used to serial test. Lucria is covid and flu too, so it's worth the cost if you're sick and need to know what you have, but it is single use. The Metrix kit will run you about $50, but its refils are cheaper than other at home covid tests. For serial testing, you'll need at least one test a day, possibly until you're all done being sick, but best practices for catching your most virulent phase of infection is 2 times daily. It adds up quickly, especially if you want/need to test to exit quarantine.

Stay Safe in 2021 by Getting Covid-19 Test at Home
Tumblr media
Venturing outside has become dangerous in the wake of the global Covid-19 pandemic. New waves of mutated Covid-19 strains are bringing in new fears in the general population. So, it has become very important to get vaccinated and also perform timely covid-19 test at home whenever you experience symptoms.
The Value of Dependable Covid 19 Care Home Test Kit Collection
A dependable covid 19 care home test kit collection pack is all you need to allay the fears of a possible Covid-19 infection.
Nowadays, RT-PCR kits are considered to be the gold standards for testing. But it is also very important that you source these kits from the right place. As after testing, you are likely to mingle with your family and friends, it is very important that the test results are spot on.
At Citation Bioscience, we have dependable covid-19 test kits - in stock, which means you stay completely assured about the results after using the kits.
Instead of painful nasal swabs, our kits work with a spit sample that is deposited in a hazard-proof box and sent to a CLIA certified lab. The results are provided within 24-48 hours. Before getting the results, it is important that you self-isolate to prevent the spread of virus.

The Choice Between Covid-19 Antibody Test Kit and RT-PCR Kits in 2021
Tumblr media
In 2021, Covid-19 is running rampant and hampering the quality of life in so many ways. Experts believe that the best way to stop the negative impact of Covid-19 is testing and testing accurately. However, with so many options available in the market, it can be hard to choose a particular testing methodology. Primarily, people are confused between covid 19 antibody test kit and RT-PCR test kits. Let’s try to find the answers.
RT-PCR vs. Antibody vs. Antigen Testing
Primarily, there are three type of tests available: antibody, antigen and RNA testing also known as RT-PCR. Antibody testing tries to find the presence of antibodies in the body that are created as an immune system response. These tests are cheaper but provide rapid results.
Antigen testing takes longer than antibody testing but it tries to find the actual protein of the virus in the body. Lastly, RT-PCR testing looks for the RNA, which is the genetic material of the Covid-19 virus.
The Verdict
Initially, antigen and antibody testing kits were heavily used. These kits provided rapid results but the number of false negatives and false positives were really high. In contrast, the RT-PCR covid 19 care home test kit collection have proven to be the most effective. The results can be provided within 48 hours, which is a slightly longer duration but the accuracy of test is unmatched.

New Brunswick rolls out rapid testing for students, but some have concerns
New Brunswick has rolled out a new rapid testing program for students, in response to the rising number of COVID-19 cases in schools.
Not all students are eligible for testing, leaving some parents to question the point of the program.
Sabrina Steeves’ daughter Ella spent Tuesday learning from home, after receiving an email Monday night that she was a close contact of a confirmed case at Moncton High School.
“It’s so frustrating for everybody I’m sure,” says Sabrina Steeves. “As a parent, I need to feel that my child is safe.”
Despite her close contact status, the grade 10 student is not eligible to take part in a new rapid testing program rolled out by New Brunswick, because she’s fully vaccinated.
“Even if we are vaccinated, we still have those anxieties about ‘what if we do have it?’,” says Ella.
“She doesn’t have to self-isolate, but then she has to sit and wonder and worry for two weeks,” adds Sabrina Steeves. “And then one day she has a headache, and has to worry that she’s exposing her loved ones and family members.”
The province’s Anglophone East School District said in an email Tuesday that students who are deemed close contacts and eligible for testing will receive an email from their school with instructions on when and where to pick up their tests.
In a release, the province says unvaccinated students who are identified as a close contact of a confirmed case may be provided with ‘quantities of five-pack rapid tests, depending on the last possible exposure date to the confirmed case, along with instructions.’
Tests will be picked up by parents the following day, depending upon when the school is notified of a confirmed case.
Students with two negative tests and no symptoms will be able to return to the classroom after as little as 24 hours of self-isolation, unless otherwise advised by Public Health. They will be required to continue testing daily until the end of the period, as prescribed by Public Health, to continue attending school.
“Unvaccinated students will be provided with a five-to-15 day supply of rapid tests, depending on the last possible exposure date to the confirmed case,” said Dr. Jennifer Russell, N.B. Chief Medical Officer of Health during Tuesday’s COVID-19 update.
It’s a policy that Ella Steeves doesn’t agree with.
“If you are a close contact at all, I think we should all be self-isolated to protect the non-vaccinated people, and that we should get tested just to put our mind at ease,” says Steeves.
When asked why only non-vaccinated students are able to take part in the newly implemented program, Dr. Russell called it an ‘evolving process’.
“We will continue to work hard to improve whatever needs to be improved in this plan, because we’re in constant discussion with education, and the medical officer of health have input regularly on identifying risks and managing those risks,” says Russell.
Steeves says she will still have concerns until the program evolves to include any student wanting to be tested.
“I’ve been scared, just because I don’t want to give anyone I care about the virus,” says Steeves.
The province says students who are vaccinated or are participating in rapid testing who have no symptoms may also continue to engage in extracurricular activities as they regularly would.

NERVTAG gave no details about where in Kent the variant was first located, but the Covid-19 Genomics UK Consortium said that a key sample came from a patient living ‘near Canterbury’. A medical source, who wanted to stay anonymous, told me that the variant was first identified in Margate and came from someone with a weak immune system. Some in Kent jibbed at the prospect that the new virus would be known to history as ‘the Kent variant’, drawing a parallel with Trump’s ‘China virus’ or the ‘Spanish flu’ that didn’t even come from Spain (it first reached epidemic level in military training camps in the US).
It would be difficult to find a place where coronavirus was more likely to flourish and to enhance its mode of attack than Thanet and Swale. As in much of coastal Britain, few of the towns here are still working ports or seaside resorts. What industry there once was is largely gone, taking with it the few well-paying jobs. Of the fifteen most deprived neighbourhoods in Kent, seven are in Thanet and six in Swale. ‘We lost the mining industry and Ramsgate harbour, which was a big employer,’ the Labour councillor Barry Lewis says, lamenting the repeated blows to Margate over the past forty years. The hotel and tourism industries collapsed ‘when everybody started going abroad for their holidays’. The last big manufacturer in the area was the Pfizer plant near Sandwich, which closed in 2011 with the loss of 1500 jobs. The jobs that remain are often on zero-hours contracts. A map showing areas of maximum deprivation fitted neatly over one showing high rates of viral infection.
Everything about the average working life of someone in Swale or Sheppey puts them at risk. Much of this is to do with the need to go out to work. As Jackie Cassell, a public health specialist at the Brighton and Sussex Medical School who grew up on Sheppey, put it, ‘poverty is a mechanism for increasing social contact.’ People on the island are more likely than the population at large to use public transport to get to work, doing shifts of eight or more hours a day in warehouses or on construction sites. And people with little money are more likely to look after sick or ageing relatives. In a study of working patterns, Cassell found that on average someone who goes out to work has twelve prolonged or close periods of contact with people and seventeen brief or distant ones; those working from home have only two close or prolonged periods of contact and two brief or distant ones.
The effect this has in practice depends on the nature of the job and the employer. Riddell, the railway conductor and trade union official, says that the proportion of train passengers wearing face masks varies from line to line, but the stretch from Sittingbourne to Sheerness on the west side of Sheppey is particularly risky for rail staff because ‘between 50 and 60 per cent of people, mostly the young ones, don’t wear masks.’ As a conductor, he is allowed stay in the front cabin with the driver and doesn’t have to check passengers’ tickets. But Sue Saunders, who works as a cleaner on the trains, has to walk through the carriages spraying sanitiser and cleaning surfaces. ‘We have visors, masks and gloves,’ she says, ‘but we fear for our safety and several of my friends have caught Covid.’ The cleaners are often the only official-looking people on a train and, according to Saunders, are frequently stopped by passengers who want information. She says that sanitising could be done when the trains are standing empty between journeys, but the train companies want passengers to see that the cleaners are at work.
Compliance with restrictions on social interaction largely lapsed over the summer. Sharon Goodyer, who runs the Margate Food Club, says that her volunteers sometimes couldn’t safely distribute food in poor areas because they had to push past people sitting in doorways and mixing in the street. ‘I have a feeling,’ she says, ‘that if this new variant started in Margate, then we earned it.’ But she points out that even poor people need to get outdoors: ‘You can’t be too judgmental if you’re living in a nice house and don’t have mice dying under your chair.’ Barry Lewis mentions one street in Margate with two hundred overcrowded houses where residents rent tiny rooms at high prices. ‘It’s almost a prison, so to get out to the front of the house is your normal way of life and to be stuck in one overcrowded room is not possible.’
The arrival of the variant changed attitudes. Vanessa Crick, a mother of three in Herne Bay, a rundown town on the coast between Swale and Thanet, has two jobs, in the local library and in a supermarket. ‘Since last November,’ she says, ‘more people have started wearing masks because they are frightened for their granddad or their nan.’ Charlotte Cornell, who runs a charity distributing laptops for homeschooling to children in deprived areas, says that none of the families she deals with is cavalier about the virus: ‘They are all terrified of it.’
When public health experts were sent to Kent at the end of last year to investigate the reasons for the local epidemic, they suspected that the spread would be attributable to human actions at home or in the workplace. Everything they knew about the lives of people in Thanet and Swale would favour accelerated transmission of the virus. The physical environment was a factor too: decayed seaside resorts have many former hotels with sea views whose faded grandeur make them ideal for conversion into care homes. Last May, seventeen residents died from Covid-19 in one such care home in Margate, but mass deaths in care homes were a scandal all over Britain and hardly peculiar to Thanet.
A more likely reason for the rapid spread is that many people had good reasons for not getting Covid tests. People who test positive but need to go out to work and won’t get sick pay can’t afford to quarantine. ‘Young males in economically deprived areas do not want to get tested,’ Jackie Cassell says of Swale. She points to a study in Liverpool where only 4 per cent of people in one of the city’s poorest neighbourhoods volunteered for a test. Since the pandemic began, the government has been voluble about the restrictions it has imposed but evasive about how far people comply with them. A study by King’s College London showed that, while 70 per cent of people said they would self-isolate if necessary, only 18 per cent did so.
People not getting tested because they can’t afford to quarantine will keep a low profile. But other groups aren’t keen to catch the attention of anyone in authority. Graham Tegg, the director of the Kent Law Clinic, which provides free legal assistance, says there is ‘an underground system’ of migrant workers, many of whom have lived in Britain for a long time, who want to keep their distance from state institutions. Many of his clients are Czechs, Poles and Roma. Some pick fruit and vegetables or work in packing factories; collected by minivans in the morning, they work for ten hours and come back in the evening in the same van. ‘Three or four of them may be living in the same small room,’ Tegg says, providing perfect conditions for the virus to spread.
But most people in Thanet and Swale are ‘disconnected from authority’, according to Barry Lewis: the only time they see authority in action is when the police stop them doing something they want to do. Some of them are third-generation unemployed whose only prospect for making money is in the black market or the drugs trade – described by one resident as the only growth industry in Thanet. ‘What we have here is a whole community who have no investment in society at all,’ Sharon Goodyer says. ‘What do they owe anybody? They don’t. They don’t have a decent education, a decent home, a decent job. Why should they behave responsibly?’

Two weeks ago tonight I received a mass text message. It said, you have all been exposed to COVID 19. It said, do not come to the office, do not see clients. The follow up email reminded us to be available by phone an email while waiting in line to be tested, and don't forget to meet your productivity!
Two weeks of quarantine - I did the math, just that one exposure at one building cost 300+ current and formerly homeless folks supportive services for two weeks. It has probably cost at least one of my clients his last best chance at being housed. January 1st he will be back on the street, probably, because we lost two and a half weeks here, more the month before, all to COVID exposures
I stood in the same room with my supervisor, that day we were exposed. We wore masks. We stood too close together in her tiny office and laughed. I have tested negative twice and she is out sick indefinitely, logging into occasional zoom updates looking closer to fifty than thirty.
My sister's favorite coworker messaged us at 11 last night to say he got the call. He tested positive. They sit next to each other all day at desks that never let them be six feet apart. They share food, even though it's banned - you cannot survive a pandemic beside the same person every day for 8 months without sharing chocolates along with your fears, I guess. The bureaucrats told my sister to come into work, to deal face to face with cancer patients anyway. The doctors overruled them. She gets a test, and a break from patients, and calls me panicking at lunch because she still has to show up to the office.
Her coworker is offered quarantine housing - after his whole family has been exposed to him already. He packs a bag. He doesn't go, because his daughter is afraid if he leaves she will never see him again. He's buried two people from COVID this year.
My other sister has a cough that won't go away. Her lips turn blue when she walks up stairs. Urgent care gives her a rapid test, the least accurate kind, and sends her home with antibiotics. When those don't work they give her an inhaler. When we finally get her home to a competent medical infrastructure they order COVID testing and schedule follow up calls.
I wonder if I'll spend the rest of December in quarantine with her. I wonder what will happen to my clients.
Every day I get a push notification with the latest city and county data and rule changes. How many people died today. How many icu beds are left. Every week work sends an email - we know it's a scary time, don't forget to meet you productivity! And don't worry, we'll give you 80 hours of pto to use if you get COVID!
I have been exposed so many times I've lost count now. Coworkers and clients and random run ins at the office and every one steals time and mental health from me. I've been tested at least six, maybe seven or 8 times. I'm lucky, it's easy to get tested here. I just have to sit in line. Take client calls while I wait to get a swab kit passed through my car window on a pole. Reschedule weeks worth of work while I wait for results, cram it all into half the time once I get them.
Every time I'm a little less resilient. The anxiety gets worse. Our local health infrastructure is crumbling under the weight of it all. I go back out into the field tomorrow - I'm calculating how to get as much done as possible before the next exposure, before the next two weeks of mandatory quarantine to work from home.
And we're so lucky. We haven't lost anyone, we haven't had it, yet. But this feels like the edge and we're toppling over. Everyone around us is getting it. We do not have the option to just stay home and isolate like the county order advises. Clinical homeless services and oncology unit support staff are essential. Will always be essential.
I am so tired of being essential.

Cotton Buds Making Business
The cotton swab making machine business is rapidly progressing in India. Cotton is the staple fiber made from the natural fibers of cotton plants. The cotton made from the genus Gossypium is primarily composed of cellulose, which is an insoluble organic compound that is a soft and fluffy material. Cotton is the most important fiber crop, which provides the basic raw material to the cotton textile industry. Cotton is grown in tropic and sub-tropic parts and requires uniformly high temperature and is a Kharif crop; it is sown and harvested in different parts of India depending upon the climatic conditions.
China, the USA, and India are the world’s major cotton-producing countries, accounting for about 60% of the world’s production. China alone consumes around 40% of the world’s cotton, and it is a significant export revenue source for major cotton-producing countries of the world.
Cotton is cultivated around 117 lakh hectares in India and accounts for about 37.5% of the global cotton area, and contributes to 26% of the global cotton production. Cotton holds an essential place in the Indian textile mills, and it is used as a primary raw material of India. Cotton provides livelihood to around 60 million people of India by means of cotton cultivation, processing, marketing, and exports.
Cotton buds are the most common item which is used for cleaning the ear, first-aid, cosmetic application, cleaning, and arts and crafts. The cotton buds are composed of small wads of cotton which are wrapped around a rod made of wood, paper, or plastic. The cotton buds were developed in 1923 by a Polish-American Loe Gerstenzang which later became the most widely sold brand name of cotton swabs.
The cotton bud with a single tip on a wooden handle is mostly used in medical settings and is the traditional cotton buds. The cotton buds used for domestic purposes are usually short, about 3 inches long, and double-tipped. Traditionally, the handles of the cotton buds were made of woods while later it was made of the rolled paper and sold in large quantities. The cotton buds are available in a wide variety of colors, such as blue, pink, or green. The manufacturing of the test swabs in a record time of seven days is a dream come true under the ”Make in India” initiative which has conceptualized the production and provided employment to so many unemployed people in India.
The cotton buds are most commonly used for cleaning the ear by removing earwax.  The cotton buds are used for domestic purposes such as cleaning and arts and crafts purposes. The medical buds are used to take microbiological cultures which are usually rubbed into the affected area and wiped where the bacteria grows across the culture medium. They can also be used to apply medicines to selective areas targeting to remove substances or clean them. They can be used as an applicator for applying cosmetics, ointments, or other substances.
The cotton buds are also used to take the DNA samples by scraping cells from the inner cheek in the case of humans. The cotton swabs are also often used in the construction of the plastic model kits while paintings. They are also frequently used for cleaning the laser diode lens of an optical drive in conjunction with rubbing alcohol. In addition to his, they are used to clear the large parts of the computer such as video cards and fans and also used widely to clean video games cartridges in the past.
With so many uses, the demand for cotton buds in the market is growing at a rapid rate and is an essential tool for the healthcare of all individuals irrespective of age, race, culture, or religion, etc. keeping this in mind, the idea to start the automatic cotton swab making machine business is a golden opportunity for the young and aspiring entrepreneurs.
With the increased diversity of product ranges from adult-centric to baby and child-centric and increased popularity of cotton buds in the modern as well as in traditional retailing has increased the sales of the cotton buds to grow. With the rising demand, the locally produced cotton buds have become popular across rural India. it has also become popular in small as well as in metropolitan cities because of the availability of the cotton buds at a much lower price as compared to the branded products have been a key focus for the small manufacturers in India. Therefore, it is an ideal business for employing in the Rural areas as well as it will promote the ‘Make in India” initiative of the Modi Government.
The Government of India is promoting all the manufacturing units, especially in the areas where China enjoys a big share in the global market. The government to achieve the Atma Nirbhar Bharat is pushing the exports by giving various aids to the small and marginal businessmen and it aims to reduce the dependency of the country on the imported goods.
The government through various joint ventures and supporting the local businesses is expanding India’s share in the global market. Keeping this in mind, the government has announced various production-linked incentives for manufacturing the earbuds. This is a great opportunity for Indian earbuds manufacturers to raise their business. It is a big step towards making India self-reliant and manufactures their products. Almost 260 schemes are contracted by the Tri-services at an approximate cost of Rs. 3.5 lakh crores and with the latest embargo on the import of 101 items, the contracts worth Rs 1, 30,000 crore is expected to be placed upon the domestic industries in India.
Registration:- To start the buds manufacturing business in India, the first and foremost thing is the registration of your firm either as a proprietorship company or as a partnership firm. One must register the company as a Proprietorship firm if he has to start his buds manufacturing business as One Person company. To start a partnership firm, one must get registered with the Registrar of companies (ROC) and register as a Limited Liability Partnership (LLP) or the Private Limited Company.
GST Registration:- To start a business, it is now mandatory for any business to obtain a GST number, tax identification number, and an insurance certificate.
License for Trade:- Trade license is very important to be acquired to start a buds manufacturing business. It can be obtained from the local bodies of the respective states.
MSME or SSI Registration:- To avail of the government schemes and benefits, one must obtain the MSME or SSI registration. This will help the businessman to receive all the governmental benefits arising from various schemes.
Trademark:- It is required to make sure to register the buds manufacturing business with the trademark which will help in protecting the brand name.
Before starting a semi automatic cotton swab making machine business, one has to make sure to select the proper machines which are proper for operations suitable for your business.
Following are the description of machines used in the cotton buds making business-
Automatic Cotton Swab Packing Machine : –
The automatic cotton bud making machine is the machine that uses the computer PLC process control and warm wind drying technology is used to help to absorb the coating layer. The microcomputer servo motor aids feed the cotton layer and wrap the absorbent material. In this technology, there is no requirement for a different packaging machine separately.
Spindle Fabrication Machine : –
The paper spindles are processed with the help of a dyeing cutting machine from a heavy grade paper and then a thin layered paper is rolled around it to make it light. While a wooden spindle is developed with the help of a lathe machine process. The plastic spindle is made from the extrusion molding process machine, where the plastic is melted and extruded through a die and sent to a hopper machine.
Packaging Machine : –
The cotton buds are sent through the packaging wheels where the buds are rolled with the pouch. A sensor is attached to the packaging wheel which counts the buds and places them into the packaging bag which is packed with the packaging wheel.
The automatic cotton swab packing machine does not require a lot of space for its operation and it can be started from home. Anyone can start the business even from home this will reduce the cost of investment. The cotton buds making business has the potential to give a good place in the market by becoming a high profit earning business in a short period. With the increased demand for cotton buds, the business is very ideal for start-ups and young entrepreneurs.
In the times like this where the pandemic has left no nation in a mess, India has started the manufacturing of indigenous swabs or cotton buds for the testing of Covid-19. A Mumbai based Micro, Small and Medium Enterprise (MSME) and Tulips has got a green signal from the Indian Council for Medical Research (ICMR) and the National Institute for Virology in Pune. These firms have started manufacturing the polyester-spun swabs which are way cheaper than the imported swabs from the US and China. This has helped various small and indigenous manufactures to retain their livelihood and it has also resulted in producing cheaper testing kits at an affordable price.
We Indians have in reality converted the deadly pandemic into an opportunity and the government through various initiatives has been aiding the cotton buds making business. The government is also being aided by various Non-governmental Organisations like Aatmnirbhar Sena is working very hard to provide finances and cheap credit to aspiring and innovative minds and fulfilling their dream of starting the business.
Therefore, the growth and development of cotton and cotton made products has a vital role in the overall development of the Indian economy.

Food Insecurity-We may not live by bread alone, but neither do we live without it.
The test of our progress is not whether we add more to the abundance of those who have much; it is whether we provide enough to those who have little.  Franklin D. Roosevelt
It has been my good fortune to have been able to support myself (barely at times) doing the work that I love, being a naturopathic doctor, for most of my adult life. I remember a sign in my tax preparers office that read: “The joys of owning your own business, not unlike the joys of natural childbirth, have been greatly exaggerated.” Or something like that. There are certainly those in my profession that have been financially successful along with the intrinsic rewards of helping people, but I was not one of them.
And then I got cancer. And not dying became my full-time job. On the side I also worked as a home health aide and I made little money but also had little in the way of responsibility. I also relied on programs like Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), also known as food stamps to survive.
I am doing well now. I have relocated from Alaska (my home of 30 years) to Washington state where I grew up, so that I could be closer to family. I was fortunate in that I had family to take me in while I figured out my next moves. Some are not so lucky.
I started volunteering at the Sky Valley Food Bank in my new community as a way to build my social network. I was blessed with the instant camaraderie of many fellow and sister volunteers, and paid staff, who were joined in a single purpose: support the mission of eliminating hunger. Every week we provided food for an average of 261 families, enough for 10 meals per person. This amounts to more than 75,000 pounds of food distributed every month—almost one million pounds per year.
And Then Came COVID-19
According to data from the US Department of Agriculture (USDA), some 13.7 million households (10.5% of all households), experienced food insecurity at some point in 2019. That is 35 million Americans who were either unable to acquire enough food to meet their needs, or uncertain of where their next meal might come from.
In one study that came out in June 2020, researchers asked: “In the last seven days, which of these statements best describes the food eaten in your household?”
Enough of the food we wanted to eat
Enough, but not always the kind of food we wanted to eat
 Sometimes not enough to eat
 Often not enough to eat.
According to these researchers, since 2019, food insecurity has doubled overall and tripled in households with children.*
The Ripple Effects of Hunger
Not having access to healthy food has ripple effects of chronic ill health, disability, stress, and worsening poverty. These problems did not start with COVID-19, but the pandemic has made even more glaring the differences in the quality of life between “those who have much [and] those who have little.” This kind of safety net, that supplies sustenance to those in need, makes good economic sense. Adults who have a disability, in particular a disability and are not in the workforce, also experience more than twice the rate of food insecurity as adults who do not have a disability.
Tumblr media
At our local food bank, we were unable to have our customers shop in-doors like we had in the past safely. We were shut down but found a way to deliver boxes of food to the porches of 125 families in the area. We also drastically cut down on the number of volunteers that could be in our warehouse per day which translates to fewer people doing more physically demanding work. The good news is that people from the community, from gardeners, to private businesses, to social service organizations, and individuals found ways to help Sky Valley Food Bank carry out the mission.**
School Closures and Vulnerable Students
With schools being shut down, students were no longer able to receive meals at their schools at a reduced price or free as they had in the past. This was not just a local problem, across the country nutrition directors reported that they were serving fewer meals than when school was in session. Last spring, the School Nutrition Association surveyed 2000 districts that reported 80% were serving fewer meals. Of those, the majority said the number of meals had dropped by 50% or more.
Most areas relied on the food pick up model that they usually did in the summer months where families could drop by their local school each day, often between 11-1, and pick up a bag lunch and maybe breakfast. But as parents started returning to work, the pickup model did not always work if parents were not always able to take children to the drop off site at the right time.
In Fulton County Georgia and Tucson Arizona, nutrition programs started packing food including frozen hamburgers and pizza, enough for a week’s worth of meals, and sending them out on school buses to be distributed at bus stops where the lowest income families typically resided.***
Food Deserts
In the best of times getting adequate nutrition is especially challenging for people who live in a “food desert.” The definition of a food desert can change depending on where you live. In urban areas, you need to live more than a mile away from a grocery store. For rural areas, you live more then 10 miles away. According to Feeding America, rural areas make up 63% of counties in the US and 87% of counties with high rates of food insecurity. In 2015, 19 million people lived in a food desert and 2.1 million households both lived in a food desert and lacked access to a vehicle according to the USDA.
The Shifting Model of Getting Food to the Food Insecure
In the summertime at Sky Valley Food Bank, we were able to greet our long-time customers, and many new ones, that were able to shop in our outdoor market. I loved being able to chat with our customers and find out how they were getting along. From my own experience, I can say that accepting help for something as necessary as feeding myself was a blow to my ego. Thank goodness I got over that. Being able to help my fellow and sister humans, regardless of why they were our customers is something I treasure.
Like many school districts around the country, our schools were not able to open in September. We partnered with our public schools to set up food pantries in five of our schools. We also had the return of rainy weather and the outdoor market was not an option. We began having a drive through service where our staff would build boxes of food for distribution in people’s cars. We were now serving 325 families and had special “Holiday” boxes in November and December, along with the usual boxes of meat, dairy, dry goods, canned goods, grains, produce, and food for their four-legged household members. Getting two boxes is better than one box, especially during the holidays.
In December we also had a toy drive that garnered an incredible assortment of toys from community members. It is remarkable how much our community does to provide for people having a tough time—food, toys, money—all gratefully accepted. The parents were able to pick out toys for their kids.
We are looking forward to having our customers back in our service area to carefully select the foods they want for themselves and their loved ones. We are looking forward to giving them the kind of respectful service we always have and continue to provide. COVID or no COVID.
LONE WOLF
I am a lone wolf.
I have lost my pack.
My sire was the first to go. The alfa.
His job to protect the pack, especially from each other, fell to no one.
I grew up with the bitch who was two years my elder.
Always the more adventurous one. She was gone
Before her pups were fully grown.
And they are lost to me.
The she-wolf who bore me tried desperately to keep the pack together.
“Come home. Why don’t you move back home?”
She grew old, frail, a little crazy
A kind of crazy that was always there but kept in check by the alpha.
The older bitch is gone too.
When did the word bitch become derogatory?
I reclaim that title. It suits me.
It suits those of us who live in a world where self sufficiency is prized above all
And sentimentality is a luxury.
Another sire gone. Was it really eight years ago?
He left to be with Jesus.
I think he’s food for flora and fauna.
Who’s to say?
My brother looks up from the hard work of dying
All traces of silliness and the infectious laughter that is his calling card are gone
And the world is just a bit more lonely.
The rest of the pack is dispersed.
Do they prowl in search of the familiar?
Of course they do. (howl)

**Helpful Hint: when  thinking of donating food to the food bank, treat the task of going through your pantry the same way you go through your closet—three piles; keep, donate, throw away. You don’t donate clothes that are ripped or stained. You throw them away. The food bank volunteers spend a lot of time sorting through donations. We cannot serve food that is spoiled or way, way, way past the pull date, or that has been opened. Thanks.

Premiere.
Tumblr media
Well, the countdown is now on to the first day of what is being called the “new normal” in education. Personally, I am not a fan of the use of “normal” in this case. What we used to have was “normal”. I want better than what we used to have...
A new reality for education. Meh. It’s getting there.
The point is, this is the premiere of the new educational landscape post-isolation. I say premiere because I miss new movies. What a first world problem to have. But I do. So I have been forced to look through my catalog of old movies. Some classics, some personal favourites and some randoms thrown in for fun.
The premiere of “new school” is much like what I imagine the premiere of a movie to be like for an actor or a director. You spend hours and hours trying to put something together that ticks all of the boxes, something that the community will get behind and support but ultimately, it could go either way.
Will the premiere of “#school2020″ be a rousing success or a resounding flop?
The best way to look forward is in this case, is to look back at the astonishing remote learning period and the rapid adaptation of a whole system to maintain continuous learning.
What better way to do that than with the help of the movies?
Apollo 13 🚀
In March we were stranded in an unfamiliar “space”, desperately contemplating “where to from here”. We looked at what we had on hand, what we had managed to pack from our offices and desks and started designing. Like the team at NASA we had to find a way to fit a “square peg in a round hole”. A way to keep the life in our learning programs. Many of us had a familiarity with the technology, the applications and the platforms, but never had we expected to completely rely on them. We had success early, but then faced a new challenge.
Groundhog Day ⏰
Like Phil Connors before us, we found ourselves in our own Punxsutawney, a repetitious environment characterised early on by hours of video conferencing, emails and quizzes. Every day we put in long hours to ensure we had differentiated our lessons, but each morning felt like waking up to the same tune on the alarm clock. As the weeks ticked over we found small successes in communicating with our students and like Phil, we learned the value of the little things. We come out of this remote learning period treasuring what we had before COVID-19, but understanding that there is greater work to be done. We came to appreciate the technology when it worked, but when it didn’t, well that was a different story.
Jurassic Park 🦖
When you have just managed to accept everyone into a lesson from the waiting room and then the internet drops out you start to feel a little agitated. It only happened a few times, but every one of them felt a bit like Dennis turning the power off and the letting the monsters out of the cage. When the video stream got a little bit laggy in the middle of a question and answer session, I felt a bit like the “blood sucking lawyer” sitting on the toilet about to be an entree. It was unpredictable at times, but we teachers adapt. “Life finds a way” and so do we, I wasn’t joking about the students being monsters though.
The Parent Trap 📱
I had the pleasure of contacting home quite often during this period. Quite a few students took a little while to warm up to the realities of learning remotely. It seemed like everything they had ever wanted; wake up late, watch TV at lunch, no more trains to catch. Unfortunately for some, the reality of being at home, surrounded by their creature comforts and their teachers confined to a box, was a little too tempting. Netflix seemed more valuable than studying the intricacies of Australia’s healthcare system. Like Hallie and Annie, they tried to pull a fast one on their parents using the tried and tested “I haven’t got any work to do” (at 11am? Nice try!) When the teacher came calling the truth came out and ultimately it brought teachers, parents and students a little bit closer albeit digitally.
Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back 🌌
What a great movie... moving on...
The Dark Knight 🦇
Small gains locally didn’t stop the “jokers” claiming that quote/unquote “homeschooling” had to stop and young people had to return to school immediately. The educational discourse has been a little bit chaotic and like good old Bruce, we teachers find ourselves in a battle we can’t really win. There is inequity across this great nation of ours and many students need to return to school. Is it safe is a big question I can’t answer, but I was hopeful this whole ordeal would increase the overall respect for educators in general. I am no Batman, but it does feel like we are being chased back into the classroom. This, despite our actions over the past few months proving that things can be different. We found a way to maintain order despite the whirlwind of chaos. Speaking of...
The Wizard of Oz 🤖
We now find ourselves in an educational world of opportunity. There isn’t necessarily a Wizard to seek out (or a giant head) and grant our wishes but we can still work to create a brain (creative & critical thinking), a heart (empathy) and courage (resilience). It’s time for us to band together and head off down our yellow brick road to the brighter future beyond the chaos. Sure, there might be a wicked witch or two, hopefully no flying monkeys, but if anything, school staff have proved that they can band together and work through anything. Like the random group found across the road, educators have collaborated without anything more to connect them than a Twitter account, that’s incredibly impressive. Let’s carry some water just in case.
Back to the Future 🚙
We can’t afford to treat this future recklessly like Marty did with his. We need to realise our past mistakes, identify what has worked recently and attempt to create real change for our students future. There is no Delorean for our students. They need our help now. We can’t afford to be looking at our remote learning programs like Marty looking at his photo, watching the gains we have made fade away. We need to take drastic steps (maybe not as drastic as his) to ensure we are preparing our students for their future. There is no going back and there is no almanac. We need to do this together.
This is it.
It is almost time to premiere. There is a mixture of nerves and anticipation. The big question: what will the future hold for education?
Time to decide.
Are you one of the directors of this new future? Or are you in the audience?
Action!
Here’s a few things that have inspired me this past week as an educator and a leader:
President Obama’s Message to the Class of 2020
(https://youtu.be/H8Ego3_43lQ)
“With so much uncertainty, with everything suddenly up for grabs, this is your generations world to shape”. A powerful message for young people everywhere from a truly inspirational leader.

Days after President Trump said he hoped the country would be “opened up and raring to go” by Easter, he instead announced on Sunday an extension of federal guidance on social distancing until the end of April, in a continued effort to slow the spread of the novel coronavirus.
Public health experts had widely scoffed at Trump’s idea of packed churches and bustling businesses by the holiday on April 12. The nation has reached more than 136,000 confirmed cases of covid-19, the disease caused by the coronavirus, and more than 2,400 related deaths — with numbers continuing to climb across the country.
Calling his previous statements targeting Easter “just an aspiration,” Trump said he now expects the covid-19 death rate to peak in two weeks, around the same time as the holiday.
“Nothing would be worse than declaring victory before the victory is won,” Trump said at an evening news conference in the White House Rose Garden. “That would be the greatest loss of all.”
Trump said that by June 1, he expects the country “will be well on our way to recovery.”
The president’s comments came after a top medical adviser to the White House and state governors said in television interviews Sunday that they did not expect to soon ease measures designed to slow the virus’s spread, warning that the outbreak will continue taxing hospitals and could kill thousands more people.
Sign up for our Coronavirus Updates newsletter to track the outbreak. All stories linked in the newsletter are free to access.
Anthony S. Fauci, the White House adviser, said on CNN’s “State of the Union” that models suggest the virus could cause between 100,000 and 200,000 deaths and that millions of people could be infected. But he stressed that the 200,000 figure was a worst-case estimate that is unlikely to come to pass.
In the Rose Garden on Sunday, Trump compared those numbers favorably with the more than 2 million deaths forecast as a worst-case scenario had the nation not taken strict measures to respond to the virus. If coronavirus-related deaths remained under 200,000, he said, “we all together have done a very good job.”
However, he said the economic impacts of the crisis as businesses are forced to close down would be felt in rising suicides and drug abuse.
“You’re going to have mental depression for people,” he said. “You’re going to have large numbers of suicides. Take a look at what happens in a really horrible recession or worse. So you’re going to have tremendous suicides.”
He added that “you will see drugs being used like nobody’s ever used them before, and people are going to be dying all over the place from drug addiction.”
The president checked off steps his administration has taken to address the outbreak and invited leaders of medical supply and logistics companies to describe what they are doing to help.
But governors in hard-hit states and the president’s advisers continued to talk darkly about the spread of the virus and the toll it would take.
In an earlier television appearance, Deborah L. Birx, coordinator of the White House coronavirus task force, said: “No state, no metro area, will be spared.”
Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, said that making rapid testing for the coronavirus more accessible, providing results in minutes, would be key in determining when it is safe to open schools and businesses and ease social distancing rules in certain cases.
“I think we can reasonably, with the safety of the American people in mind, pull back on the restrictions” in places where testing is adequate.
The number of covid-19 cases continues to soar worldwide, surpassing 700,000, with nearly 34,000 reported deaths. About 80 percent of people who have tested positive for the virus have mild or moderate symptoms, health experts have said, and some have no obvious symptoms.
The virus continued to rage in Europe on Sunday, with Spain reporting a record daily death toll of 838. Italy, which has the second-largest number of coronavirus cases, reported a daily death toll of 756. A British health official said it could be six months before life there returns to normal.
In a CNN interview before Trump announced the extension of federal guidelines, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) sharply criticized the president’s handling of the coronavirus pandemic and warned against the relaxing of social distancing guidelines.
“I think the best thing [to do would be] to prevent more loss of life rather than open things up because we just don’t know,” Pelosi said on “State of the Union.”
“As the president fiddles, people are dying,” the speaker said. “And we just have to take every precaution.”
While New York has seen by far the worst of the virus so far, the governors of Maryland, Louisiana and Michigan said in television interviews that their states’ health systems were at risk of becoming overburdened. The three states could become the next hot spots as cases climb in the Washington suburbs, Detroit and New Orleans.
Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan (R) said the president’s comments about reopening the government and business were unhelpful, conflicting with governors who are urging people to hunker down.
“The virus is going to dictate the time frame, and we’re going to follow the advice of the scientists and doctors,” Hogan said on “Fox News Sunday.” “We don’t see any way we’re going to be opening up in a couple of weeks.”
“In two weeks, around Easter, we’re going to be looking a lot more like New York,” Hogan said.
In Michigan, Gov. Gretchen Whitmer (D) said on NBC’s “Meet the Press” that officials were seeing numbers “climbing exponentially.”
“We see this astronomical rise,” said Whitmer, who has attracted Trump’s ire in recent days by criticizing the lack of federal assistance. “We’ve got hospitals that are already at capacity, we’re already running out of [supplies] as well.”
Whitmer added: “We’re going to be in dire straits again in a matter of days.”
Louisiana Gov. John Bel Edwards (D) warned that his state had only a few days’ runway before becoming overwhelmed. By the end of the week, he said on ABC News’s “This Week,” New Orleans will be at capacity on ventilators. Next, he warned, area hospitals will be out of beds.
“We remain on a trajectory, really, to overwhelm our capacity to deliver health care,” he said.
Edwards said the state has ordered 12,000 ventilators from both the national stockpile and private options but has received only 192.
States have been scrambling to find medical supplies, faced with a depleted federal stockpile that also was not designed with a nationwide outbreak in mind. Governors have said they are left effectively battling among themselves as they try to track down equipment.
Hogan, who is the chairman of the National Governors Association, said the lack of equipment was “the big pinch point.” He said governors were frustrated that the federal government and states are unable to solve some of the problems.
“There’s frustration out there, but we should do less arguing and more working together,” Hogan said.
At a news conference, New York Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo (D) tried to strike a more optimistic tone, saying that officials had a plan and were following it, even as he offered his opinion that the death toll would eventually reach the “thousands.”
Cuomo announced that the number of cases in the state was approaching 60,000, almost half the national total, and that the illness had killed almost 1,000 people.
He offered his perspective on the likely eventual death toll — stressing that it was his own opinion rather than scientific fact — after Howard A. Zucker, the New York state health commissioner, said the state’s fatality rate is hovering around 1 percent.
“I don’t see how you can read that and not see thousands of deaths,” Cuomo said.
Nonetheless, Cuomo said, the latest data showed some reasons for optimism: The rate at which the number of confirmed cases double has slowed to every six days compared with every two days in mid-March. The number of people discharged daily from hospitals who were infected is also climbing, meaning people continue to recover, Cuomo said.
With the outbreak still so severe in New York, Cuomo said he would extend through April 15 an executive order mandating that all nonessential workers stay home and that people maintain a six-foot distance in public.
Experts and political leaders have converged on the need for rapid testing before the distancing measures can be eased. A plan issued Sunday by Scott Gottlieb, a former Food and Drug Administration commissioner in the Trump administration, set forth a staged approach that hinged on the availability of tests.
Fauci and Cuomo echoed that view, but neither said when the time to make the shift might arrive. Fauci said it would be “a matter of weeks.”
Modifying the intensity of closures can happen only when the daily number of new cases starts to flatten out and then decline, Fauci said. He pointed to “serious problems” in hot spots such as New York City and New Orleans, with other areas, like Detroit, emerging.
“To be honest, we don’t have any firm idea” of the peak infection rate, he said.
Kim Bellware, Tony Romm and Cat Zakrzewski contributed to this report.

Perrone on MSNBC: “What concerns us is the volume of people coming into the stores, and the exposure that those workers are having”
UFCW International President Marc Perrone appeared on MSNBC to speak with Andrea Mitchell about the dire situation faced by America’s grocery workers who are struggling to stay safe while working under challenging conditions during the coronavirus outbreak.
Read the transcript of that conversation below.

Learn more about the UFCW’s COVID-19 work
ANDREA MITCHELL: Joining me now is the president of the United Food and Commercial Workers International Union, Marc Perrone. His union represents more than a million members. Marc, thank you very much for being with us. What is your main concern about the people working in the grocery stores, working in the drugstores, on the front lines, really?
MARC PERRONE: Well, what concerns us at this point, quite honestly, is the volume of the number of people that are coming into the stores and the exposure that those workers are having. On a normal day, we might look at anywhere from 800 to say 1,200 people, depending on the day. But one day last week in one of our stores in the New York/New Jersey area, there were over 10,000 people in the store that day.
Just the sheer volume of the people that they run into is one of our major concerns. And them not having the protective equipment that they need, much like the doctors and the first responders. Now, we understand that there’s a — what we’ve been told is there’s a shortage, and therefore, we believe that that equipment, of course, needs to go first to the doctors and the nurses and the firefighters and the police.
However, we have looked for alternative ways and we’ve been working with Albertsons and Safeway to put up plexiglass shields, to shield those workers from that close contact. We think that’s going to be a good solution in the short-run, but we do need protective equipment at some point in time when we get enough supplies for everybody that are going to be in the line of fire.
MITCHELL: What percentage, if you know, of grocery store workers in the big chains even have masks?
PERRONE: Well, what we’re finding out is that virtually none of them do. Even if they have their own mask at home, like if they’ve done some drywall work or asbestos work around their house or insulation work, they don’t have those masks. And because the CDC initially said that you should only wear them if you’re sick, I think it gave the impression to the public that if you wore a mask, you were sick. And some of the employers were concerned about their employees having masks on, that the public might think that they were sick, when they really weren’t. So, it has been a challenge.
I think the biggest thing that they could do for our members right now — and that’s one of the reasons why we are asking for first responder status, is so that we can get quick testing and rapid test results so that at least we’d be able to pull anybody out of the stores that had tested positive that were going to be talking to that many people in the public on a day-to-day basis.
And it also would help our co-workers in those stores so that they wouldn’t get sick from interacting with somebody that might have been infected. I think the third thing that we’re looking for that’s very important to us is workers have time off sick pay if they’re impacted by the virus. Now, that’s very different than being infected by it, because we can’t get the testing, and we can’t get the rapid test results.
Many people are, in fact, pulling themselves out of work because they have symptoms. however, they can’t get the test done. and since they can’t get the test done, by the time they’re well and a test can be given to them, the employer says, well, you know, ultimately, we didn’t have a result for you. And so, they’ve pulled themselves out to protect their customers and their co-workers, but they end up having a Catch-22.
MITCHELL: Well, as we both know, for your workers, they don’t qualify for the tests under these current guidelines. You have to have been diagnosed or have been in contact with someone who has been diagnosed to even qualify for a test, and then it’s very hard to get. So it is a catch-22. Marc Perrone, thank you very much. Thanks for speaking out for all of the frontline people working in the grocery stores, helping to keep us all fed and, of course, the drugstores as well.
PERRONE: You know, Andrea, if I may, thank you so much for having me today. and i don’t know if you’re aware of this, but we also represent all of the packing and food processing workers, so that’s the next level of concern.
MITCHELL: Absolutely.
PERRONE: We need to keep this food chain and food supply open because we will, in fact, have panic if we can’t keep that open. Thank you.
MITCHELL: Well, you are so right. Thank you, again.

Advantages of rapid antigen tests
Tumblr media
Benefits of fast antigen tests
A quick immune response test, otherwise called a serology test, is to identify SARS-CoV-2 antibodies in a patient's blood. Rather than distinguishing dynamic Covid contamination, this test shows whether the patient has had a Coronavirus disease previously or has created antibodies after vaccination.
Furthermore, the quantity of individuals who have had the infection and have since recuperated might be resolved involving speedy fast testing for organizations rapid testing for businesses in chicago. Fast antigen tests are solid for the omicron variety of COVID-19, as they were for earlier adaptations. This is on the grounds that antigens don't differ between COVID-19 variations.
Point of Screening with a Rapid Covid Test
