So, on to another crafting project that has been going on for a while. I have not been able to buy comfortable, genderneutral, unsexy underwear in my life ever (thats made from cotton preferably), until recently. I purchased underpants that are made to resemble boxershorts , but without a bulge (from tomboyx). Big fan of those, but as with the button down shirts the issue is the same: shipping costs from the US are an arm an a leg. Thus begins my journey of making my own pattern for underpants. I did join a workshop in our local open sewing workshop for this (concerning pattern tracing your own clothes and working with stretch fabrics).

These were some of my first specimens. Since then, I have done a lot of them, and I learned a lot, too! I used a zig-zag stitch for most seams, they retain the stretch of the fabric. A twin needle can be used for the visible front seams. We actually have a very cool coverlock sewing machine in the workshop that I learned to use for this project, and it's even better, but I want to point out that you don't need it! You could do your own underwear on a simple sewing machine you have at home, no need for a fancy machine. I love that I can just go nuts with the patterns and elastic bands (The picture quality isn't the best, but there's pirate skulls, dinosaurs, watermelons and strawberries, animal print, bike wheels and some made out of sheer power net) I can do whatever the hell I want and I feel great wearing them! (Theres also one sports bra there, top right corner)

Some of the fabrics I had already at home, some of these are old t-shirts repurposed and I also bought new fabric for this. But it's a great project for recycling old jersey clothing! The elastic is mostly new tho i also just finished size grading the pattern (not very well, this was my first time doing that) to make some underpants for friends as gifts :3 (I was asked for this.. not creepy).

Me: It's a coverstitch. It's like a hem, but thinner because you don't need to double-turn, and it stretches. It's like the hem on the shirt you're wearing.

Husband: So how do you sew it on that? *points to That Machine that Costs the Same as a Car*

Me: Well, you can do a single-turn stretch hem with this stitch. *demos: white/blue thread*

Husband: But how do you do THAT ONE? *points at the coverstitch*

Me: You can't do an actual coverstitch on this machine. You need more needles and the ability to handle four threads at once--

Husband: You are telling me you are charging THAT MUCH for a sewing machine and it can't do EVERYTHING? My son's first CAR didn't cost THAT MUCH!
