Book Review: Guzman "Family Values: Kurt, Courtney and Frances Bean"

The husband-and-wife photographer team of Constance Hansen and Russell Peacock known as Guzman did a famous photo shoot with Nirvana's Kurt Cobain and wife / Hole leader Courtney Love in September 1992 one month after their daughter Frances Bean was born. Just as Nirvana was the biggest band on the planet, there was a backlash and the "First Couple of Grunge" was getting raked over the coals by the press, notably an inflammatory piece in Vanity Fair and they were fighting for custody of their baby girl. Spin Magazine was doing a cover story on the couple for their Dec. 1992 issue and they sent Guzman to photograph them in their Los Angeles home they had just moved into that Summer. These photos, some of which were quite famous and have been published many times over the years, have recently been released in the photo book Family Values: Kurt, Courtney and Frances Bean.

The book begins with a forward from Michael Azerrad, author of the Nirvana bio Come as You Are (read my interview with him from 2023). The photos are a mixture of color and B&W. There's candid fly-on-the-wall pics, behind-the-scenes setting up for shoots, full-on photo shoots, and family portraits of the young family both individually and collectively. This is truly time-capsule worthy!

As a fan of Cobain and Love, I obviously enjoyed looking at this book. For Frances Bean, who just became a first-time mother herself, we're seeing her beginning and the joy she brought to her parents. There's very little we haven't seen or heard in the way of Cobain, so the fact that Guzman has opened up their vaults to share the entire photo shoot in this book is a special treat for fans. But the photography is really what makes this book!

The police don’t get involved for internet related stuff most of the time, but what Lily did to Sunny, Courtney, and many others is well beyond her already very filled record of internet stuff. Could it be possible to get charges on Lily surrounding that?

Sunny still falls under "internet stuff" in the eyes of law enforcement, and Courtney's experiences happened so long ago that the only thing close to evidence he could realistically get would be a therapist confirming that she has trauma relating to CSA. And even that is more abstract than hard physical proof so that's still a gamble.

Lily is on the same level as people like Onision. It took years, a ton of public exposure, and Chris Hansen himself stepping in before anyone took any of the disgusting shit Onision did seriously. And yet he's still not in prison.

Hypnotist Sappho is another example. She has proudly declared she's a zoophile, proudly displays her nauseating "relationships" with young teenagers (the audio I've heard will make you want to scrub your skin off to feel clean again), she tried to set up an entire nonprofit "zoophile rights" organization, and she has websites that openly tell people how to hide illegal material. She's been reported to authorities numerous times. Still not in prison.

Kero the Wolf has a ton of chats, audio, video, and public forum posts detailing the unspeakably horrific things he's done to animals. He's a proud zoosadist beyond a shadow of a doubt. He was actually investigated by authorities. Still somehow not in prison and he's still online today smugly talking about how he's starting a new chapter and every PROVEN accusation against him is a baseless hate campaign.

People get away with far, far more disgusting shit than it seems a lot of people learning about Lily realize. Law enforcement is not obligated to give a shit. Law enforcement is not obligated to actually enforce anything, regardless of whether there's undeniable evidence shoved in their faces.

😈 Has there been a point in a story where you did something just to be playfully mean to your readers?

Wait, is this not the origin story of every fic cliffhanger that’s ever existed?

(Which is to say, yes, yes I have.)

I think every project has those lines that you write and think okay, well that’s going to make people lose their collective shit. But those tend to be happy accidents, at least in my experience. The last time I consciously wrote something with the explicit intention of fucking with people was the last part of the last scene in Past Perfect Future Tense’s second chapter, which was this weird, disjointed collection of fragments from a future that hasn’t yet happened for the characters (but has for the reader, in canon, in the most fucked-up way possible). Just jumping from moment to moment, but tying them all together, was ridiculously fun to write, but even more rewarding because the whole point of the fic is to fix that future.

💖 What made you start writing?

In general, I have no idea. I’ve been writing little stories since I was a kid, for as long as I can remember. Fic, specifically: I was bored one night, watched an episode of Roswell, ended up on a fan site, stumbled across a fic, found it intriguing, and thought “hey, I could do that.”

🤩 Who is your favorite character to write?

This is such an evil question. My favorite characters are well documented by now (and usually involve melanin, soft hearts, and sort of tragic backstories). My favorite characters to write, though? Those are usually the ones with sharp minds and sharper tongues, the ones who seem to have custody of all the brain cells when it counts — Margo Hansen and Nora Holleran are prime examples. Like I know I’ve been complaining about this neverending esta noche chapter, but half of that is because I’m having such a blast writing the Reyes women. Where the Lone Star universe is concerned, it’s no secret that I love Carlos most. But I probably have the most fun writing, say, Grace or Andrea (and that’s also why I’m itching to write me some Nancy).

All that said, I adore writing TK. There’s something about the “feral kitten to happy puppy” progression that hits me like nothing else, yes, but he’s also just sort of fascinating — the duality of him, how vulnerable and capable and hopeful he is, and all his kindness… Plus, there's the added bonus of getting to see Carlos through his eyes. I’ve never written anyone quite like him, and I’m loving everywhere he takes me (even if it is this endless damn chapter).
