Hi Meg, I was wondering if I could get your insight on something... I'm interested in bioinformatics as a career but am not sure whether I should pursue just a Master's or try for a PhD. How did you decide how far you want to go with your education? I noticed you mentioned you hope to do a PhD someday? Thank you so much!
hey anon! okay, so in this answer I'ma focus on two things:
my thought process behind finalizing on a PhD
my approach to furthering education
I. Why PhD?
1. I love my subjects. I love the interdisciplinary nature of computational biology and it's sister subjects and I can see myself in academia- constantly learning and researching and exploring. 2. Even on the off chance that if I don't pursue a career in academia, I think I need a PhD anyway? Most high level positions in the industry for life-sciences requires a level of expertise that only comes with a doctorate, and I think my career opportunities (+ growth) will be rather limited without it.
Considering these two points, a PhD would be most suitable for me.
———————
Now, choosing the right type of graduate program can always be challenging because there are so many ways to go about it, and I am a very indecisive person so this was especially difficult for me. Here is my approach
II. Factors I considered before taking my next steps
My Primary Short-Term Goal(s)
I opted for a B.Tech in Biotechnology after 12th grade, and it is through the course of this degree that I realized my interest in computational biology and bioinformatics. My undergrad focused on too many topics and often emphasized wet lab over dry lab, so although I'm graduating with a specialization in Medicinal and Computational Biology, I don't know nearly enough regarding the computational aspects Thus, my short-term goal is to expand my theoretical understanding of the important aspects of bioinformatics & computational biology.
2. Course Options that Work
Now, I know that I want to continue my education, I've got two options- Masters and PhD. When I considered my immediate goal against these two options, I realized four things: a. I'm not equipped with the required dry lab skills to dive headfirst into research. b. I don't know enough bioinformatics to commit to anything long term right now c. I'm looking for a course that feels like an extension of my undergrad d. I want to keep my options open and consider all career opportunities Given these three options (+ course-related expenses + my skill level), it made most sense for me to choose a MSc at the moment rather than a PhD.
3. How the Course Ties in to My Long Term Goals
As I mentioned, my long term goal is to do a PhD. However, my upcoming graduate course is actually an MSc by Coursework degree, which- unlike a Thesis program, focuses on skill development (especially industry related) rather than research. In fact, most Thesis Masters can be converted to a PhD, but my program does not have that option. At first glance, this course might seem like it's going against my long term goal but consider: - Industry related or not, I need to develop computational skills before I can pursue research - After this course I might prefer to gain work experience for a couple years before opting for a PhD. - My preferred uni(s) for PhD are different from my preferred uni for Masters. [^To give an example on the last point, for masters i considered countries/unis known for their quality of education + closer to my home country (this will be my first time living abroad alone) but for my PhD, I'm looking at countries/unis that are pioneers in research for my subjects of interest (even if they are a lot farther away from home)] So essentially, I'm relying on this course to give me the skills and knowledge I need for a PhD in the future, while also giving me a buffer to understand and align my future goals and plans. Jumping from this to a PhD would be a lot harder than from a Thesis Masters, but that's a risk I'm willing to take.
So yeah, this was the way I went about choosing both my short term and long term academic goals. I hope this provides a good starting point for you! Don't stress out too much about it though; the truth is that there is no right or wrong choice, whatever decision you make will warp around your intentions and work for you the way you want it to. Best of luck for your future endeavors!!! I'm sure it'll all work out <3
#idk if this makes sense but I hope it helps! best of luck anon!!#resources#studyblr#answered#bioinformatics#bio student#biology#regarding cpb#computational biology#study resources#biology student

Why Pursuing a BA After 12th in Pune Is a Smart Career Move
For students finishing their 12th standard and looking for a meaningful and flexible academic path, a Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree offers an excellent option. With a wide range of subjects and career possibilities, the BA program provides the kind of foundational knowledge and skills that remain relevant in an ever-changing job market.
Pune often called the academic heart of Maharashtra, has emerged as a preferred destination for students seeking a strong liberal arts education. Its colleges are known for academic quality, cultural diversity, and exposure to real-world learning.
A Versatile Degree with Strong Foundations
A BA program allows students to dive deep into subjects like English, Economics, Psychology, Political Science, History, Sociology, and more. The degree is structured to help students build critical thinking, communication, and analytical skills that employers value across industries.
Unlike technical courses that limit you to specific roles, a BA opens up opportunities in multiple fields. Students can later branch into education, media, public administration, content creation, research, and even corporate roles.
Learning Beyond Textbooks
One of the key advantages of studying BA in Pune is the focus on practical learning. Many colleges offer hands-on projects, field visits, seminars, and internships that allow students to apply their classroom knowledge in real-life settings.
Colleges like Symbiosis College of Arts and Commerce (SCAC) include skill-based modules, guest lectures, and interactive learning sessions. Students benefit from workshops on soft skills, communication, digital tools, and social research methods. This exposure helps bridge the gap between academic learning and professional application.
Career Opportunities After BA
Contrary to popular myths, BA graduates have access to a wide range of career options. Depending on your subject and interests, you can explore roles such as:
Content writer or editor
Public relations or communications officer
Human resource executive
Policy analyst or civil service aspirant
Counselor or psychologist (with further study)
NGO or social sector professional
The flexibility of the degree also makes it easier to pursue postgraduate studies in management, arts, education, or social sciences. Many students go on to write exams like UPSC, and NET, or prepare for international education.
Updated Curriculum Aligned with Today’s Needs
In recent years, leading BA colleges in Pune have revised their curricula to match current demands. With the New Education Policy in place, students can now choose specializations, combine major and minor subjects, and earn credit through internships and add-on certifications.
Institutions like SCAC have introduced courses in digital media, creative writing, personality development, and campus-to-career transitions. These additions help students stay ahead in both academic and professional spheres.
A College Experience That Builds Confidence
College life is more than academics. Pune’s BA colleges offer rich student life through clubs, debates, theatre, literature forums, and social outreach programs. These activities play a major role in developing leadership, creativity, and collaboration.
Such an environment not only builds confidence but also helps students discover their interests beyond the syllabus. It prepares them for life after college, both personally and professionally.
Why Pune Makes a Difference
Studying in Pune comes with several advantages. The city offers a blend of academic excellence, affordable living, and access to opportunities in NGOs, media houses, educational institutions, and startups. The student-friendly atmosphere, combined with cultural exposure, makes it an ideal place to pursue a BA degree.
Colleges like SCAC are recognized for maintaining academic rigor while also encouraging holistic development. With a supportive faculty, strong infrastructure, and focus on career readiness, students are well-positioned to succeed after graduation.
Final Thoughts
A BA degree is not just about studying arts subjects. It is about developing a flexible mindset, learning how to think critically, and gaining the skills to adapt in a variety of fields. For students looking to make the most of their college years, Pune offers the right combination of learning, exposure, and growth.
Symbiosis College of Arts and Commerce stands among the respected institutions that help students build a strong foundation for their future, both in academics and beyond.

How to Choose a Stream?
With boards ending, a lot of you guys are wondering what stream you should choose, and a few people have hmu in my dms asking for advice, so i figured I'd make a post about how I suggest choosing a stream. Fair warning, I am a PCMB student so my advice will be a little science-stream focused because, obviously, I don't know what problems other streams might face, so additions are welcome from other people who have more to add <3
First off, this is one of the most important decisions of your life. This decision determines what the next two years of your life will look like, and it plays a strong role in determining your career for the rest of your life. So don't make this choice lightly.
Make an informed decision. I cannot stress upon this enough- do. your. own. research. Don't trust people who say there is no job opportunity in abc stream or that xyz stream will make your 'life set', all of it is bullshit. Half the time the people giving you these advices finished their schooling 20-30 years ago, respectfully- they have no idea what they're talking about. So sure, listen to everyone's inputs but check everything for yourself.
Websites are your best friend. And no, not "Top 7 High Salary Careers' type websites, I mean college websites. The best way to choose your stream is to explore various careers. For this, start with exploring the type of courses and degrees available, then head to the college's websites and check out the curriculum, the eligibility and the entrance exam requirements. Of course you don't have to choose a degree from now itself, in fact even if you have chosen something 9 times out of 10 you will change your mind by the time 12th ends, but knowing what options there are other than NEET, JEE, CUET and stuff will help you understand if you're more inclined towards science, commerce or humanities.
Subjects change after 10th, for example- what you think physics is and what 11th-12th physics is are two completely different things, so if you are more inclined towards a particular stream, go through the books. Either borrow from your seniors or go through the free NCERT pdfs (ncerts are the easiest versions of science subjects, at least, so your actual material will be 1-2 levels higher in difficulty, keep that in mind). Going through the material is not that efficient because everything seems easy at first glance but it still gives a general idea about the type of stuff you will learn so whatever piques your interest most should be a good choice to consider. I would suggest going through the books of all the streams if you have time, that way you can check which is the best fit for you. (Also go through multiple chapters, not just the first few ones)
Work on attraction rather than elimination. Dismissing a stream just because you don't like one subject in it is not a good way to go about it. Choose the stream which has a majority of subjects you do like, rather than choosing one which has the least number of subjects you don't like. Overall the purpose of a stream in 11th-12th is to get you into your desired course in college, so your biggest indication of stream will be the degrees you like, not the subjects you don't like.
Remember to prioritize yourself and your choices, trust yourself. People might have all sorts of opinions about what stream you should take and what career you should pursue. Of course some people have your best interests in mind, but ultimately it is you who has to go through with it. Being pushed into making certain choices is really harmful because there is absolutely no motivation to keep going once it gets hard (and it will). So it is best to choose your own poison so that when times get hard you know that this is something you actually really want and that way you will genuinely feel like working for it, rather than being forced to work hard for something you aren't even sure you want to do.
Don't stress too much. I know I said this is a super important decision, and it is, but it is not life ending. You can only do so much and there is no guarantee whether what you choose today will work out for you two years down the line. And that's okay. Remember that there is always an option to change plans, no matter how far along you are. So don't bind yourself to the choice you make today, you always have more options. Try your best to choose what feels right for you, and if situations change later in life, so can your plans.
If you don't know what exactly you want to do with your life, stop blaming yourself for it. I promise 90% of us had no idea what we were doing when we were your age either, even if we thought we knew what we wanted, we didn't. It's okay to not know what you want to do for the rest of your life when you're 15 or 16. Trust your gut and try your best to be informed about the stream you're choosing. As you go along, you will find your calling when the time is right. It's never too late, you'll be fine
lots of love to everyone starting on this really tedious path, the next two years will teach you a lot about yourselves and I hope you all make the best of it, all the best <3

Become a cybersecurity expert: Career Scope and Courses to Pursue after 12th
With the world becoming more interconnected, tons of data get stored and sent through different channels online. All this data needs strong security protection against malicious intrusion and leaks. This has been the reason why there has been a growing demand for cybersecurity professionals in the last decade. Pursuing a relevant degree programme such as a Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech) or Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) in Computer Science or a dedicated Cybersecurity degree after Grade 12 can pave the way for a rewarding career in this field.
The Data Security Council of India (DSCI), an association of individuals working in the cybersecurity ecosystem, predicts that the demand for cybersecurity professionals in India will be enormous. They estimate that the demand is expected to rise from 110,000 in 2019 to 1 million by 2026.
Understanding the Rising Demand for Cybersecurity Professionals.
Before we look at the most popular cybersecurity options, we need to understand the real reasons behind the increasing demand for cybersecurity jobs. Why is the demand for highly skilled cybersecurity graduates consistently outpacing supply? According to a report from the University of Maryland, hackers launch an attack approximately every 39 seconds, which equates to an average of 2,244 attacks per day.
Organisations affected by this type of attack will suffer data loss, financial loss, and loss of customer trust. Cybersecurity best practices are essential to protect against these serious cyber threats. This includes protecting networks and computer systems from unauthorized digital intrusion. As the volume of digital data continues to increase, the number of cyberattacks is expected to be quantified. This has resulted in substantial demand for cyber security professionals. Nevertheless, according to research time and again, there is extensive skills shortage where most cyber security jobs are still vacant because they lack skilled people.
Advantages of Taking Cybersecurity Courses After High School!
Given the growing demand for cybersecurity professionals, interested and qualified students have excellent prospects when pursuing cybersecurity courses after completing their schooling (Grade 12). With the proliferation of cyber threats worldwide, companies are actively seeking skilled professionals to protect their digital assets.
A career in cybersecurity offers numerous opportunities, including roles such as security analyst, penetration tester, and ethical hacker. This is a globally important, growing, and often highly compensated field. This makes it an attractive option for those interested in securing digital infrastructure and making businesses more resilient in the digital age.
Academic Pathways to Cybersecurity After Grade 12
In India, students can pursue various degree programmes relevant to cybersecurity at universities recognised by the University Grants Commission (UGC). General eligibility often requires achieving a minimum percentage (commonly 50% or higher) in Grade 12 (or equivalent examination), particularly in the Science stream for engineering and technical programmes.
Common Degree Options:
1. Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech) in Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) with Specialisation in Cybersecurity:

3. Bachelor of Computer Applications (BCA) with Cybersecurity Modules/Electives:
Stream Requirement: Some universities accept students from any stream (often with Mathematics as a subject).
Duration: Typically 3 years.
Focus: Provides a foundation in computer applications. Students can often choose electives or modules focusing on network security, system security, and basic cybersecurity principles.
4. Integrated Programmes (e.g., B.Tech + M.Tech):
Some institutions offer integrated 5-year programmes combining undergraduate and postgraduate studies in relevant fields.
Note: Specific course titles, duration, eligibility criteria, and curriculum details vary significantly between universities. Always check the official website of the institution for the most accurate information.
IES University Strengthening Digital Defenses
IES University is a prestigious and widely recognized university. With experiential learning a common activity in the curriculum, the practical learning experiences at IES University are carefully designed and selected to support academic research and enhance professional skill development. Leadership and Intelligence
Choosing the Right Cybersecurity Programme
Look for programmes where experiential learning is integrated into the curriculum. Practical experiences, such as labs, projects, and case studies, should be carefully designed to support academic understanding and enhance professional skill development.

Why More Students Are Choosing BA LLB for Legal Careers
Law is one of the most respected and impactful career paths in India. As the country continues to evolve socially and economically, the need for skilled legal professionals is growing. Among the various legal education options, the BA LLB course in India is gaining popularity among students right after the 12th standard.
So why are more students choosing this integrated course over the traditional route? Here's a detailed look at what makes the BA LLB course a preferred choice for aspiring lawyers.
What is a BA LLB course?
The BA LLB course in India is a five-year integrated law program that combines a Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree with a Bachelor of Laws (LLB). It includes subjects from the humanities and law, offering a broader perspective to students. Common subjects include:
Political science
Sociology
History
Economics
Constitutional law
Criminal law
Contract law
Family law
By merging arts and law, the program builds both a solid academic foundation and legal knowledge.
Early start after the 12th standard
One major reason for the popularity of this course is the opportunity to begin a legal education immediately after Class 12. Unlike the traditional LLB course in India, which requires a prior bachelor’s degree, the BA LLB allows students to pursue law as a first choice rather than a second option.
This early start saves time and allows for deeper immersion into legal studies from a younger age.
Holistic learning approach
The combination of arts and law makes this program unique. Subjects like political science and sociology help students understand the social and political context of laws. This builds critical thinking, reasoning, and a strong understanding of how the legal system interacts with society.
This broader perspective is valuable for careers in litigation, policy-making, human rights, and public service.
Strong foundation for diverse careers
A BA LLB course in India opens the door to a wide range of legal and non-legal careers. Graduates can become:
Lawyers and advocates
Legal advisors or consultants
Corporate legal officers
Judicial officers (after clearing exams)
Legal researchers and academics
Civil service officers
Policy analysts and human rights activists
With additional qualifications or experience, graduates can also work in media, international organisations, and NGOs.
Preparation for competitive exams
Many students who pursue the BA LLB course also prepare for competitive exams like:
Judicial Services Exam
UPSC Civil Services
CLAT for LLM or further studies
UGC NET for legal research and academics
The course content supports preparation for these exams through an in-depth understanding of constitutional law, legal reasoning, and current affairs.
Practical exposure during the course
Top law colleges in India offering the BA LLB course provide practical learning through:
Moot court sessions
Internships with law firms, NGOs, and advocates
Legal aid clinics
Research and writing opportunities
Guest lectures by legal professionals
This hands-on experience helps students develop advocacy skills, public speaking skills, legal writing skills, and critical analysis skills.

BBA vs BCA: Which Course is Right for You After 12th in Navi Mumbai
After completing 12th, students often find themselves at a crossroads when it comes to choosing the right career path. Among the popular options, BBA (Bachelor of Business Administration) and BCA (Bachelor of Computer Applications) are two courses that offer promising futures — but in very different directions.
So how do you know which course is the right fit for you?

Understanding the Core of Each Course
BBA is ideal for students interested in business, marketing, management, entrepreneurship, or finance. The curriculum focuses on business principles, organizational behavior, economics, and leadership skills. It opens the door to roles like marketing manager, HR executive, business analyst, or even an MBA in the future.
On the other hand, BCA is for students who have an interest in computers, programming, app development, or IT systems. The course involves learning programming languages like Java, Python, databases, web design, and software engineering. BCA graduates often go into roles like software developer, system analyst, or pursue MCA for advanced tech expertise.
Career Prospects
While both fields have good career growth, your passion should drive your choice. If you enjoy strategizing, leading teams, and thinking from a business perspective, BBA might be a better fit. If you love coding, solving logical problems, and building digital solutions, then BCA is likely the right choice.
Eligibility and Duration
Both BBA and BCA are 3-year undergraduate courses. Most colleges require a minimum of 50% marks in 12th grade. For BCA, some institutions may prefer students from a science or math background, but many accept students from all streams today.
Which Course Should You Choose in Navi Mumbai?
Navi Mumbai has emerged as a hub for quality education with industry-focused curriculums and strong placement support. If you’re seeking the best BBA college in Navi Mumbai, look for institutions that provide real-world exposure, internship opportunities, and skill development programs alongside academics.
Similarly, when considering the best BCA college in Navi Mumbai, make sure the college offers hands-on training in modern programming languages, access to well-equipped computer labs, and tech-driven workshops or hackathons.
Final Thoughts
There’s no one-size-fits-all answer. Your choice between BBA and BCA should depend on your long-term goals, interests, and the kind of work you see yourself doing in the future. Navi Mumbai offers excellent options for both, so take your time, visit campuses if possible, and speak to current students or faculty before making your decision.
Remember, the right course is the one that aligns with your passion and vision for the future.
