COUP DE CHANCE (parte II)

(segue) Sono luoghi che conosco come le mie tasche e che frequento da decenni e non posso non notare questi particolari. Non è dato di sapere dove abiti esattamente Fanny col marito Jean, ricco faccendiere un po’ losco, poiché le riprese sono sempre all’interno della elegante abitazione, probabilmente haussmaniana. Ma sono le panchine del lato nord del Palais Royal a due passi dal Vefour, celebratissimo ristorante parigino, ad ospitare lo spuntino tra Fanny e Jean, sufficientemente lontano dalla casa d’aste dove lavora Fanny, tanto da rendere giustificati i sospetti di Jean. Non facilissimo per tutti riconoscere il Café de l’Époque meta di una della mie sfinenti passeggiate serali, proprio a fianco della bellissima Galerie Véro-Dodat. Facilissimo invece identificare nella Shakespeare & Co. la libreria dove curiosano i due amanti, del resto Woody non poteva resistere ad inserire anche questa location, luogo must per tutti, ma in particolari per newyorkesi o americani colti, impegnati nel Grand Tour europeo. Basta dare poi un’occhiata ai vialetti, affiancati dalle inconfondibili panchine inclinate, per farci capire che Fanny e il marito Jean, fanatico della forma fisica, stanno facendo jogging al Parc Monceau. Questo indizio però ci aiuta anche a definire il luogo della loro probabile abitazione che potrebbe essere compresa nell’area tra il Boulevard Malesherbes e Il Boulevard Haussaman nel cuore dell’VIII arrondissement. Un gioco da ragazzi riconoscere il Quai des Grands Augustins, a due passi dalla Monnai, dove si incontrano Jean e gli sgherri rumeni assoldati per far sparire il povero Alain. Jean e i brutti ceffi passeggiano tra le chiatte ormeggiate, mentre sullo sfondo compare solitaria la statua di un reale cavaliere: si tratta de “le Vert Galant” del Pont Neuf ovvero Henri IV, colui che disse “Parigi val ben una messa!”. Ma in mezzo a tante certezze, ecco i dubbi: sarà Bofinger il restaurant dove cenano per la prima volta Fanny e Alain? È la Fôret de Fontainbleu il luogo della battuta di caccia assassina a cui partecipano Jean e la suocera? Molto probabile. Ma la cosa che mi tormenta di più è non aver saputo collocare la piazzetta con il delizioso mercatino con fontana al centro dove Fanny e Alain fanno la spesa. Naturalmente si accettano suggerimenti. Ah dimenticavo! E il film? Il film è adorabile, come la città…

Hey Woody, smile. I am smiling he replied at first and then actually did. I’ve been speaking to him since the early 90s. His film Coup de Chance was out of competion so was ineligible for prizes but it was fabulous.

Stuff I'm Looking Forward To in April

Welcome to the 2nd quarter of 2024! In addition to April Fools Day (April 1), Eid al-Fitr (April 9-10), Patriots Day / Marathon Monday (April 15 in MA), Tax Day (April 15), Earth Day (April 22), Passover (April 22-30), Armenian Genocide Remembrance Day (April 24) and there's also a solar eclipse on April 8, here is what's on my radar this month:

Movies:

Coup de Chance

Not sure if I'm "looking forward to this", but I'm curious about Woody Allen's new one as he has hinted this would be his last. Whatever your opinion is of Woody Allen, as a filmmaker he has made some solid films. Opens 4/5.

Civil War 

Alex Garland has had a mixed bag as a writer/director with Ex Machina being his best so far. His new one has been creating quite a buzz about a dystopian not-so-far future where journalists try to make it to D.C. before rebels descend on the White House. No coincidence this is being released during an election year. Opens 4/12 (review to come).

Challengers

What got my attention about this tennis drama wasn't star Zendaya, director Luca Guadagnino or the score from Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross. It's the fact that it was filmed in Massachusetts and more specifically it filmed a little in Bedford, where I grew up. Opens 4/26 (review to come).

Music:

Pearl Jam Dark Matter

Pearl Jam's 12th studio album is finally year. The band's last album was 2020's Gigaton, which I noted was their best album since their 2006 self-titled album. I'm digging what I've heard so far and hopes are high for this one! Album drops 4/19. (Review to come).

Bruce Springsteen Best of Bruce Springsteen

The Boss has released a number of compilations over the years, his 1995 Greatest Hits being among my favorites. Now there's a new compilation with 18 hits ranging from 1973 to 2020. Album drops 4/19 (review to come).

St. Vincent All Born Screaming

St. Vincent is back with her 7th studio album. This one features appearances by numerous guests including Dave Grohl and Josh Freese of Foo Fighters. Album drops 4/26.

TV:

Curb Your Enthusiasm finale

I've been enjoying Season 12 of Larry David's social assassin. This is the final season (or so they say) and the season/series finale is set to air on HBO on 4/7. End of an era!

Conan O'Brien Must Go

I'm a huge fan of Conan O'Brien, going back to Late Night with Conan O'Brien (read my memories of attending his show here) and since then he's bounced back from the Tonight Show debacle with a great run on TBS and his fun podcast. Now he's back with a travel show meeting fans all over the world! Series premiere on 4/18 on Max!

The day we celebrate independently owned and operated record stores is one of my favorite holidays of the year! It's on 4/20 this year!

Not to be outdone, independent bookstores get their day of celebration on 4/27.

Film Festivals:

Salem Horror Fest

I have been lucky enough to cover this genre film festival in Salem, MA since 2018. This year they are hitting some venues beyond Salem as well. Fest runs from 4/25 to 5/5!

Guardare un film di Allen è sempre un' esperienza piacevole, anche quando sei consapevole che le sue ultime opere non sono all'altezza dei suoi vecchi capolavori.

In Coup de chance ti lasci trasportare in questa bellissima e affascinante Parigi autunnale che fa da sfondo alla storia d'amore tra Fanny, una donna sposata con uno stronzo riccone e Alain, uno scrittore squattrinato che incontra casualmente dopo tanti anni. Tra intrighi, inganni, sensi di colpa e scherzi imprevedibili del destino il film scorre via che è una meraviglia, ricordandomi a tratti Match Point, anche se decisamente meno amaro e cupo.

Coup de Chance is Woody Allen's latest film, and one of his best in recent years, reminding some of his masterful Match Point but also Crimes and Misdemeanours in that this isn't a pure comedy but has a darker criminal aspect at its centre. Its theme, though, is about luck and what an important part it plays in people's lives. Allen has always been a great writer. And we're lucky that in his late 80s, he's still putting out such interesting films, year after year, even though some in Hollywood are determined to "cancel" him out of existence. Like classic Greek dramatists and Shakespeare, Allen is a master in telling simple tales about humanity and how fragile our existence is, teaching its heroes lessons with all the sufferings he puts them through, reversing their fates and having a laugh at their ignorance. Coup de Chance has all that, plus romantic park walks in Paris, an ironic look at the French bourgeoisie and jazz music playing throughout. All are delivered in French by an excellent cast and photographed in crisp and colourful digital cinematography by the great Vittorio Storaro. What more could you ask but for the film to be released worldwide soon!

Die Woody-Allen-Liebeswirren/Eifersucht/kriminelle-Energie-Versatzstück-Maschinerie läuft weiterhin routiniert, auch auf französisch. Es sind dann aber doch einige sehr unwahrscheinliche Zufälle!

WOODY ALLEN: “COUP DE CHANCE” (parte I)

Sono due i principali motivi per cui questa non sarà la solita recensione personale ad un film, anzi i motivi sono tre: il primo è che si tratta di Woody Allen e con lui ho un legame molto profondo che risale al 1969, quando undicenne, vidi il suo primo film, “Prendi i soldi e scappa”; da allora non me ne sono perso uno e sono passati solo cinquantaquattro anni. Il secondo motivo è che, sia Woody che io consideriamo Parigi la nostra seconda patria e che “Coup de chance” inizia proprio a qualche centinaio di metri dalla mia casetta delle vacanze parigine. Il terzo motivo, più banale è che si tratta di una sorta di giallo, per cui qualcuno mi farebbe notare che non dovrei rivelarne il finale (e nemmeno il plot narrativo). Insomma questa volta parlerò del film solo attraverso suggestioni personali legate più ai luoghi che alle vicende. La prima sequenza, quella dell’incontro tra Fanny ed Alain, ex compagni di liceo, avviene sulla Avenue Montaigne, una delle grandi vie del lusso parigino e delle grandi maison della moda. Esattamente i due si incontrano dinnanzi al Théâtre des Champs Elysées dove, con grande maestria, Woody mostra senza mostrare la sagoma sfuocata della Tour Eiffel, una sorta di imprimatur alla location dell’intero film. I due passeggiano quasi fino all’ingresso dell’Hôtel Plaza Athénée, mentre cammin facendo Fanny rivela di essere impiegata di una grande casa d’aste, “Artcurial”, che ha effettivamente la sua sontuosa sede all’inizio dell’Avenue al “Rond Point” degli Champs Elysées. Non mentire e non essere approssimativi, contribuisce a fare di un regista, un grande regista. (continua)
