What are the different types of Asphalt Mixing Plants?
Gajjar Equipments Private Limited ASPHALT MATERIAL Asphalt pavement material, or bituminous pavement material, consists of asphalt binder and aggregates like sand, gravel, and crushed stone. The binder, a petroleum by-product, glues the aggregates together, creating a durable, flexible surface that withstands heavy loads and resists water. Widely used for roads, highways, parking lots, and runways due to its smooth finish and easy maintenance. Perfect for infrastructure projects. TYPES OF ASPHALT MIXING PLANTS Asphalt Hot Mix Plants and Asphalt Cold Mix Plants are two distinct types of facilities used to produce asphalt, differentiated primarily by the temperature at which the material is processed. Nowadays, both types of plants come in stationary and mobile variants. - ASPHALT HOT MIX PLANTS: These plants produce hot mix asphalt (HMA) by heating aggregates (gravel, sand, crushed rock) to high temperatures (around 150-180°C) and then mixing them with hot bitumen. The process ensures that the asphalt is thoroughly coated and achieves the desired consistency. This type of plants is ideal for large-scale road construction, highways, airports, and other infrastructure projects. HMA is known for its durability and ability to withstand heavy traffic loads. Asphalt Hot Mix Plants are further categorized by their mixing processes, each offering unique advantages and suited for specific project requirements: - 1 Asphalt Batch Mix Plants: Asphalt Batch Mix Plants produce asphalt in separate batches. The aggregates are heated and stored in individual bins before being measured and mixed with bitumen and filler materials in a pug mill mixer. Each batch can be customized to meet specific requirements, making this type of plant ideal for projects that require different mix designs or frequent changes in the mix. Click Here for more details. - 2 Asphalt Drum Mix Plants: Asphalt Drum Mix Plants produce asphalt continuously, so these plants are also known as continuous mix plants. In these plants, the aggregates and bitumen are mixed in a rotating drum. The drum serves both as a dryer and a mixer, heating the aggregates and mixing them with bitumen in a continuous process. Drum mix plants are highly efficient, making them suitable for large-scale projects with consistent mix designs. Asphalt Drum Mix Plants are further categorized based on the setup and flow of materials within the drum. 1.2.1 Parallel Flow Drum Mix Plants: In parallel flow drum mix plants, the aggregates and bitumen flow in the same direction through the drum. The burner is placed at the lower end of the drum, and the materials move from the higher end to the lower end. This setup allows the aggregates to be heated efficiently as they mix with the bitumen, resulting in a consistent and uniform mix. These plants are known for their simplicity and ease of operation. Click Here for more details. 1.2.2 Counter Flow Drum Mix Plants: Counter flow drum mix plants feature a design where the aggregates and bitumen move in opposite directions. The burner is located at the lower end, and the aggregates move from the higher end to the lower end, while the bitumen flows from the lower end to the higher end. This setup provides better control over emissions and enhances the heat transfer efficiency, resulting in higher-quality asphalt. It also helps in reducing the energy consumption of the plant. Click Here for more details. 1.2.3 Double Drum Mix Plants / Duo Drum Mix Plants: Double drum mix plants combine both parallel and counter flow principles. They have an inner and outer drum. The aggregates are dried in the inner drum where the hot gases flow in the opposite direction to the aggregates (counter flow). After drying, the aggregates are transferred to the outer drum where they are mixed with bitumen in a parallel flow manner. This design improves the quality of the mix and increases production efficiency, making it suitable for large-scale projects. Click Here for more details. 1.2.4 Continuous Mix Plants with Pugmill: Continuous mix plants, although similar to drum mix plants, use a pugmill mixer for combining the aggregates and bitumen. Continuous mix plants with pugmill mixers are essential for projects that demand high efficiency and consistent quality. They provide a seamless solution for large-scale asphalt production, ensuring that the mix meets the required specifications throughout the project. 2. ASPHALT COLD MIX PLANTS: These plants produce cold mix asphalt (CMA) by mixing aggregates with emulsified or cutback bitumen at ambient temperatures. This type of asphalt does not require heating, which makes the production process simpler and more energy-efficient. This type of plants is suitable for patching, minor repairs, and road maintenance, especially in colder regions where hot mix plants may not be feasible. Cold mix asphalt is often used in low-traffic areas and temporary road surfaces. These various setups cater to different project needs, from simple operations to high-efficiency production and superior mix quality. Understanding these categories helps in selecting the right type of plant for specific project requirements. Let us know if you need our expert advice on selecting the best suitable Asphalt Mixing Plant for your upcoming projects. Read the full article

The Way An Asphalt Batch Mix Plant Functions
Mixing different sizes and grades of aggregates in asphalt mix plants produces asphalt material. These aggregates are mixed with the appropriate amount of liquid bitumen, and heated together to create hot asphalt mixture. Asphalt is a mix of bitumen and pulverized stones that is used for making pavements.
There are a few factors that determine the characteristics and quality of an asphalt mix. These factors include the amount of aggregate used and the type or recycled pavement.
How does hot mix asphalt get made? Once the aggregates have dried, they are heated to coat them with bitumen. You can dry the aggregate by rolling it in a dryer drum. To evaporate dampness and generate heat, the dryer drum is heated to below. The aggregate remains in the top half of drum. The interior contains several types of flight that heat the drum. The mixing chamber is where the aggregates are covered with bitumen.

All Tech Group
There are two main types of asphalt plants.
Asphalt is produced in small batches by the batch plant, also known to be called the discontinuous tower plant.
Drum plant also known as continuous plant. This plant is capable of producing asphalt continuously, without any stopping. These plants can work in parallel or against flow
How an Asphalt Batch Plant works
Mixing begins when aggregates are removed from feeders. The aggregates are then moved by a conveyor to a drying drum. This drum has an internal flight that quickly dries the contents. The aggregates are then transported outside to the drying drum, where they are separated through sedimentation. The aggregates are then sorted according to their size and placed in the hot bins.
Once the aggregate sizes are sorted and controlled they can be allowed to enter the mixing chamber. The aggregate sizes are then combined with bitumen in a controlled quantity. The bitumen is taken directly from the container. It is then stored at high temperatures. The product is delivered in the right proportions by the mixing unit. The mixture is ready to be discharged. It is then unloaded from the hot storage silo. It can be loaded on a truck if it is ready to transport.
Parallel Flow Drum Plants – Functioning
Parallel flow drum asphalt plants produce asphalt continuously unlike batch-producing plants. Parallel flow drum asphalt plants only require one dryer to dry and mix. The dryer is used for drying the mixture and mixing it with bitumen. The mixture is weighed as it moves from the cold feed bins to the mixing drum via the charging conveyor belt. After the mixture has been weighed it is placed in the drum's lower section to be stored in one the silos. You can also load the mix directly into a truck to transfer it immediately. Asphalt mixers that utilize parallel flow can be used with both dry and wet types of pollution control systems. There are a variety of capacities available, ranging from 40 tph to 200 tph.

Inside Look at Drum Type Asphalt Plant Operations
Asphalt drum mix plant and counter flow asphalt mixing plant are the two types of plants that are categorized as continuous mixing plants. Drum mix and batch plants differ in their asphalt concrete production operations.

Inside Look at Drum Type Asphalt Plant Operations
The drum type asphalt plant is also called the continuous mix plant because there is a drum or container where they pour the aggregate and which leads to the mixer where they will be processed on a continuous cycle. It is also called asphalt drum mix plant or a drum type hot mix plant when they use the hot mix type of bitumen asphalt or hot mix recycled material.
It sounds simple enough, but the definition given was merely to distinguish it from the other type of batch plant. An in-depth look at the process from the point of view of the plant operator may offer a different perspective.
The Basic Steps
The process begins with the asphalt aggregates being fed into the cold feeder bins. This is to distinguish the aggregates according to size. The plant operator will check the aggregates as they are now in separate bins. There is a prescribed size depending on the project, and the plant operator will have these aggregates undergo different lengths of processing. The size and consistency of the asphalt is a factor for the overall quality, so it is imperative to maintain it.
The aggregates will pass through a vibrating screen to further sift out the larger aggregates and prevent them from entering the drum. From the drum, a charging conveyor will transfer the sifted aggregates into the drying and mixing drum of the asphalt mixing plants.
For the plant operator, the charging conveyor is fitted with a load cell so they can weigh the aggregates collectively before they enter the drying and mixing drum.
The weight and other data of the load cell will be sent to a computer panel which is controlled by the plant operator. This will be the basis on whether there will be adjustments in the process, since the plant operator controls the flow of bitumen and other filler material.
Bitumen is in a separate tank, and will be added into the drying drum with a bitumen pump. The amount is based on the plant operator’s control panel, where the speed and quantity are controlled.
Now that the materials are measured, the drum type hot mix plant lives up to its name, as the drying and mixing drums start their work. It will heat and mix the aggregates evenly and then it is at this point that the aggregates enter the drum for heating. The bitumen and other filling material will follow after the aggregate if heated.
After the mixing, the asphalt material will be stored in the bins, or to a conveyor which will transfer it to the trucks (if they will be transported).
The asphalt plant operator is very important, as they need to control the elements to ensure the consistency of the asphalt produced.
The Lintec Edge
For Lintec, they have elevated the standard of the drum type asphalt plant. The Lintec Continuous Drum Plant (CDP) range features a containerized modular framework that allows for easy transportation and convenient installation on the job site.
The primary components of the Lintec containerized or drum type mixing plant are nestled in a 40-ft high-cube ISO sea container. This is easily land-transported and sea-shipped with low freight cost. Other models’ main components come with built-in chassis, so it’s easy to transport once it is on land.
Special Features of Lintec Continuous Drum Asphalt Plant
Quick Assembly and Dismantling
The components can be assembled on a suitable and solid compacted ground, without the need for concrete foundations. It’s easy to install and dismantle your asphalt mix plant.
They have the optional Aggregates Loading System (ALS) for the CDP 4000C and CDP 5001M models which allows a more flexible plant layout because the loading ramp is not required. This will further reduce the plant set-up cost and dismantling fee,
Features for the Environment
The Baghouse Filter ensures a low rate of particulate emissions, and is compliant to environmental emission regulations.
The plant can be adapted to a cold recycling system. This system can allow the operator to use up to 15% of Reclaimed Asphalt Pavement (RAP) material, conserving natural resources.
Efficiency and Consistency
This asphalt plant is developed with the latest software installed and has passed the most rigorous industrial techniques. The quality of the asphalt is most important, and these measures ensure more control for the plant operator to regulate.

The Advantages Of Hot Asphalt Mixing Plants
The use of Hot-Mix Asphalt (HMA) offers an efficient, economical and fast construction process along with unsurpassed versatility. When rehabilitation is a requirement, it can be achieved with speed with very little user delay. The asphalt pavements offer the best advantage for all types of project conditions. Here are some of the top benefits of using hot asphalt mixing plants.
Economical
The FHA (Federal Highway Administration) shows that each dollar that is spent on the asphalt pavements goes around 26.9% further that each dollar that is spent on the concrete pavements. Asphalt has been recognized as a more cost-effective choice because it is able to be constructed in the form of a “Perpetual Pavement”, which results in lower user costs.
Recyclable
One of the main benefits of Hot-Mix Asphalt is that is able to be recycled completely. The aggregates can be reused as well as the asphalt binders that maintain their adhesive properties, which can also be used in the next HMA mix. The pavements that have been recycled in the conventional hot asphalt mixing plant, require minimal modifications. In addition, the recycled pavements when tested in a laboratory and out in the field have gone onto prove themselves to be perform just as well as the virgin-aggregate mixes. Learn more: http://aimixasphaltplant.com/.
The hot asphalt mixing plants based in Minnesota are capable of making use of RAP (reclaimed asphalt pavement). The HMA pavements are all 100% recyclable and are in fact a product that is the most recycled in the U.S. This technology is in existence to minimize the net “foreign oil” dependency by making use of reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP) shingles as well as synthetic binders.
The Ease Of Construction
Since the hot asphalt mixing plant machine is placed, the time-consuming task of form work along with steel reinforcement have been eliminated. Once placed, traffic is able to use the pavements just about immediately as no delays are needed to allow the materials to cure. In addition, when repairing roads, the asphalt surfaces are much easier and faster to complete, as there is just about no downtime required having to wait for a patch to cure.
What You Need To Know About Hot Asphalt Mixing Plants
The mixing plants made by portable asphalt mixer manufacturer are ideal for the plants that have specific projects that don’t require frequent changes in the mix. In comparison to the batch plants that are able to change the mixes a lot easier. The continuous mixing plants are named this way because if 1-part stops working, everything will stop.
With the continuous plants, the virgin aggregate that comes from a cold-feed bin will be fed to a conveyor-belt by volume or weight according to the gradation of the mix design. The aggregate mix then goes up the cold feed conveyor or elevator and enters the “counter-flow” drum mixer.
As the virgin-aggregate moves from one side of the drum to the other it heats up. Air that blasts through this drum blows and picks up fine dust of the aggregates. This dust is caught in a bag house. At the far side of this drum the RAP enters the drum and is heated up by the virgin, super-hot aggregate. They mix together and land up in a HMA storage or silo where it is distributed to trucks.
