What are the different types of Asphalt Mixing Plants?
Tumblr media
Gajjar Equipments Private Limited ASPHALT MATERIAL Asphalt pavement material, or bituminous pavement material, consists of asphalt binder and aggregates like sand, gravel, and crushed stone. The binder, a petroleum by-product, glues the aggregates together, creating a durable, flexible surface that withstands heavy loads and resists water. Widely used for roads, highways, parking lots, and runways due to its smooth finish and easy maintenance. Perfect for infrastructure projects. TYPES OF ASPHALT MIXING PLANTS Asphalt Hot Mix Plants and Asphalt Cold Mix Plants are two distinct types of facilities used to produce asphalt, differentiated primarily by the temperature at which the material is processed. Nowadays, both types of plants come in stationary and mobile variants. - ASPHALT HOT MIX PLANTS: These plants produce hot mix asphalt (HMA) by heating aggregates (gravel, sand, crushed rock) to high temperatures (around 150-180°C) and then mixing them with hot bitumen. The process ensures that the asphalt is thoroughly coated and achieves the desired consistency. This type of plants is ideal for large-scale road construction, highways, airports, and other infrastructure projects. HMA is known for its durability and ability to withstand heavy traffic loads. Asphalt Hot Mix Plants are further categorized by their mixing processes, each offering unique advantages and suited for specific project requirements: - 1 Asphalt Batch Mix Plants: Asphalt Batch Mix Plants produce asphalt in separate batches. The aggregates are heated and stored in individual bins before being measured and mixed with bitumen and filler materials in a pug mill mixer. Each batch can be customized to meet specific requirements, making this type of plant ideal for projects that require different mix designs or frequent changes in the mix. Click Here for more details. - 2 Asphalt Drum Mix Plants: Asphalt Drum Mix Plants produce asphalt continuously, so these plants are also known as continuous mix plants. In these plants, the aggregates and bitumen are mixed in a rotating drum. The drum serves both as a dryer and a mixer, heating the aggregates and mixing them with bitumen in a continuous process. Drum mix plants are highly efficient, making them suitable for large-scale projects with consistent mix designs. Asphalt Drum Mix Plants are further categorized based on the setup and flow of materials within the drum. 1.2.1 Parallel Flow Drum Mix Plants: In parallel flow drum mix plants, the aggregates and bitumen flow in the same direction through the drum. The burner is placed at the lower end of the drum, and the materials move from the higher end to the lower end. This setup allows the aggregates to be heated efficiently as they mix with the bitumen, resulting in a consistent and uniform mix. These plants are known for their simplicity and ease of operation. Click Here for more details. 1.2.2 Counter Flow Drum Mix Plants: Counter flow drum mix plants feature a design where the aggregates and bitumen move in opposite directions. The burner is located at the lower end, and the aggregates move from the higher end to the lower end, while the bitumen flows from the lower end to the higher end. This setup provides better control over emissions and enhances the heat transfer efficiency, resulting in higher-quality asphalt. It also helps in reducing the energy consumption of the plant. Click Here for more details. 1.2.3 Double Drum Mix Plants / Duo Drum Mix Plants: Double drum mix plants combine both parallel and counter flow principles. They have an inner and outer drum. The aggregates are dried in the inner drum where the hot gases flow in the opposite direction to the aggregates (counter flow). After drying, the aggregates are transferred to the outer drum where they are mixed with bitumen in a parallel flow manner. This design improves the quality of the mix and increases production efficiency, making it suitable for large-scale projects. Click Here for more details. 1.2.4 Continuous Mix Plants with Pugmill: Continuous mix plants, although similar to drum mix plants, use a pugmill mixer for combining the aggregates and bitumen. Continuous mix plants with pugmill mixers are essential for projects that demand high efficiency and consistent quality. They provide a seamless solution for large-scale asphalt production, ensuring that the mix meets the required specifications throughout the project. 2. ASPHALT COLD MIX PLANTS: These plants produce cold mix asphalt (CMA) by mixing aggregates with emulsified or cutback bitumen at ambient temperatures. This type of asphalt does not require heating, which makes the production process simpler and more energy-efficient. This type of plants is suitable for patching, minor repairs, and road maintenance, especially in colder regions where hot mix plants may not be feasible. Cold mix asphalt is often used in low-traffic areas and temporary road surfaces. These various setups cater to different project needs, from simple operations to high-efficiency production and superior mix quality. Understanding these categories helps in selecting the right type of plant for specific project requirements. Crusher Machine Used For The Highly Energy - Intensive Mining And Crushing Industry
Stone Crushing Industry
Crushed stone and sand & gravel are the main types of natural aggregate used in the United States. Despite the low value of its basic products, the crushed rock industry is a major contributor to and an indicator of the economic well being of the nation. Industry consolidation is on the rise as large producers buyout the smaller producers. Individual crushed-stone quarries range in size from 50,000 to 10 million tons of product annually and the major assistance is given by asphalt batch plant manufacturer.
Asphalt Batch Plant Exporters
In 2011, 1,260 companies operating 3,300 active quarries and distribution yards produced 1.5 billion tons of crushed stone valued at $8.6 billion and employing more than 70,000 people. Of the total crushed stone produced in 2011, about 71% was limestone and dolomite; 15%, granite; 7%, trap rock; and the remaining 7% was shared, in descending order of quantity, by sandstone and quartzite, miscellaneous stone, marble, calcareous marl, slate, volcanic cinder and scoria, and shell. Leading states, in order of production, were Texas, Florida, Pennsylvania, Missouri, Illinois, Georgia, Ohio, North Carolina, Virginia, and California, together accounting for 51.8% of the total output (USGS, 2011).
During the past 25 years, production of crushed stone has increased at an average annual rate of about 3.3%. These projections suggest that vast quantities of crushed stone and sand and gravel will be needed in the future and that much of it will have to come from resources yet to be delineated or defined. Further growth will be fueled by new legislation that is allocating significant monetary resources into the construction and repair of highways and bridges in the United States.
Asphalt Batch Plant Exporter
Asphalt Industry
Asphalt creation starts with a mixture of sand and small and large rocks (called aggregate), which are combined with heated asphalt cement - thus the name hot mix asphalt (HMA). There are two basic types of plant designs used to manufacture HMA: batch plants and drum plants. There are approximately 3,600 HMA plants in the United States, accounting for a total annual production of 450 to 500 million tons of asphalt paving material. About 2,300 of the HMA plants are batch plants, with the remaining 1,300 are drum mix plants. The asphalt pavement industry employs approximately 330,000 people in the U.S. About 94% of the nation's roads and highways are surfaced with asphalt.
Stone Crushing Process
Stone crushing involves the following processes: mining, processing, crushing, screening and transportation. These processes are discussed in detail below.
Mining
The shot-rock is typically transported to the crushing plants using trucks. The large end users in the crushing plant consist of feeders, crushers, conveyors and screens.
Crushing
Crushers mechanically break the stone into smaller pieces. Reduction in size is generally accomplished in several crushing stages, as there are practical limitations on the ratio of size reduction through a single stage. Crusher selection is based on rock type, required size reduction, output rock shape and production rate. Details on the different available crusher designs are presented below.
- jaw crusher
Jaw crushers are typically used as primary crushers. A jaw crusher consists of a set of vertical jaws, one jaw being fixed and the other moving. The progressive compression by the back-and-forth motion of the moving jaw breaks the stone. Jaw crushers operate best when fullyloaded but not flood-fed.
- impact crusher
Impact crushers are typically used in the primary and secondary crushing stages, are well suited for softer rocks and can achieve reduction ratios of up to 40:1. Impact crushers tend to wear faster than other crushers because of constant high-velocity collision with the stone.
- cone crusher
Cone crushers are a type of gyratory crushers that are well suited for applications that require a reduction ratio of 6:1 and provide a tight control over the rocks leaving the crusher. They are typically applied in the secondary and tertiary crushing stages. For proper reduction and consistent product gradation, cone crushers must be choke fed at all times.
- mobile crusher
A typical quarry face will recede approximately 45 feet every year. This extra distance increases the work of the haul trucks that feed the primary crushers with the shot rock. Mobile crushers offer the option of crushing near the blast site and using efficient conveyors to supply the secondary crushing operations. Mobile crushers are also popular for projects with a limited project life.
Crusher Machine Selection and Application
Table below shows a generic crusher selection guide, as well as unloaded power draw.
The primary crushing stage is the most economical segment of the aggregate plant in which to make material reduction, after the initial quarry blast. Primary crushing involves reducing shot rock from 40-inch minus to 9-inch minus rock. The secondary and tertiary crushers reduce the stone from 9-inch minus to less than 2-inch rock size. Different stages of crushing are required based on the intended final product size. Typically, a greater number of crushing stages are required to get smaller rock sizes.

Drum Asphalt Mix Plant
Drum plants, on the other hand, prepare the asphalt mix through a constant procedure as well as need using silos for short-term storage space before the mix being trucked to the paving location. The advantages 1. There is no interruption in the manufacturing process as there is a continual flow of aggregate and also liquid asphalt right into the drying/mixing chamber.
2. There are several different setups of drum equipment, all depending on just how the accumulation moves in connection with the hot air, which is accountable for home heating as well as drying out the materials.
3. In parallel flow, the aggregate and air flow in the same direction with the chamber.
4. In counter-flow plants, the aggregate as well as air flow in opposite instructions with the chamber.
5. In double drum or double barrel plants, there is an external covering through which the aggregate moves before coming in contact with the hot air inside the chamber.
6. Despite the arrangement, it is a continual process that develops a homogeneous blend that can be produced at a high price (occasionally as high as 600-800 bunches per hour).
