Monteverde to La Fortuna
After our cloud forest tour, we returned to the main town of Monteverde for some lunch and shopping before we departed for La Fortuna. Tyrza and I went for a coffee at Orchid café where I also had French toast. It had started raining again so we went souvenir shopping hopping from shop to shop to keep dry. There was an at gallery featuring the work of a local artist called Ferlander Arguedas who seemed to love bright colours and Costa Rican animals – I ended up buying a bold sloth tshirt to add to my collection of souvenirs! We picked up some cheaper chocolate at the supermarket and then rode with Danilo our driver to Rio Chaquito. Part of the way there we stopped for a bathroom break and ice creams and had to wait for Charlie who selfishly ordered food again to hold us up. We passed some filthy windmills and finally we reached La Fortuna – the largest lake in Costa Rica measuring about 64km2. As we got off the bus and gathered our belongings to transfer on to the boat I realised I had lost the brand new umbrella I’d only bought yesterday. I must have left it hanging on the back of the chair while waiting for the bus. The boat ride was great until the rudder or something broke off the boat and there was a rush to fix it. It was repaired before we could panic too much though, and soon we had reached our destination and were riding with Luis to our hotel. Dennis gave us a briefing and then handed out all of our room keys. I had a lie down and unpacked a bit then headed out for booking our La Fortuna activities and to have dinner. We were led down the street to the partner tour company who sat us down for basically a long sales pitch about all of their activities. It was very overpriced in my opinion, they were charging more for stand up paddleboarding than I’d paid in Frisco in the United States a couple months earlier. I booked the rafting trip because we really needed the entire group to do it so that it worked out with our transportation onward to San Jose, but then I just used their wifi to book a tour of Mistico Park on Trip Advisor that was cheaper than their tour and departed earlier. Tyrza decided to join me on my trip in going early and hopefully getting a clear view and beating the rain! Our group went out for dinner at Nunka, a restaurant where apparently Dennis would get a kickback from bringing us there. We all paid full price on our expensive (and small) meals and he got a free strip steak for bringing the customers in. I’d chosen the Pollo Cahuita which was nice but again, very overpriced for the size and served with an expensive Mai Tai. Costa Rica definitely considers itself to be first world in price but you still can’t flush the toilet paper!

Beyond Destinations: The Art of Crafting an Unforgettable Experience Vacation
In the era of curated lifestyles, the traditional notion of a vacation is evolving into something more profound—an zážitková dovolená. This transformative concept transcends the conventional idea of merely visiting a destination, encouraging travelers to immerse themselves in a tapestry of unique encounters that redefine the way we perceive leisure and adventure.
An experience vacation is a personalized journey designed to awaken the senses and forge lasting memories. It's about more than ticking off landmarks on a checklist; it's about delving into the heartbeat of a place and allowing it to leave an indelible mark on your soul. Here's how you can elevate your travel escapades from a mere trip to an immersive experience vacation.
Immersive Cultural Encounters: The heart and soul of an experience vacation lie in connecting with the local culture. Rather than observing from a distance, actively participate in cultural activities. This could be as simple as joining a traditional cooking class in Tuscany, engaging in a tea ceremony in Kyoto, or dancing to the rhythm of local tunes at a street festival. These encounters not only deepen your understanding of the destination but also create authentic connections with the people who call it home.
Adventure Beyond Boundaries: While relaxation is a crucial aspect of any vacation, injecting a dose of adventure adds an extra layer of excitement. An experience vacation encourages you to step out of your comfort zone, be it through a thrilling zip-lining experience in a Costa Rican rainforest, exploring underwater caves in the Bahamas, or embarking on a hot air balloon ride over the mesmerizing landscapes of Cappadocia. These adventures become the pulse of your journey, creating stories that resonate long after you return home.
Meaningful Volunteerism: For those seeking a deeper purpose in their travels, incorporating volunteerism into an experience vacation can be profoundly rewarding. Whether contributing to wildlife conservation efforts in Africa, participating in community development projects in Southeast Asia, or volunteering at a local shelter, these experiences allow you to make a positive impact while forging a connection with the communities you visit. It's an opportunity to give back and leave a destination better than you found it.
Off-the-Beaten-Path Exploration: An experience vacation thrives on the thrill of discovery. While iconic landmarks certainly have their allure, consider venturing off the beaten path to uncover hidden gems and secret corners. Wander through charming alleyways, stumble upon local markets, and interact with locals away from tourist hotspots. This unscripted exploration adds an element of surprise to your journey, creating a narrative that unfolds organically.
Mindful Wellness Retreats: In the fast-paced world we inhabit, the importance of wellness cannot be overstated. Many experience vacations now integrate wellness retreats into the itinerary, offering activities such as yoga retreats in Bali, meditation sessions in the Himalayas, or spa getaways in Iceland's geothermal wonders. These moments of introspection and self-care enrich your journey, ensuring you return home not just relaxed but also rejuvenated.
In essence, an experience vacation transcends the conventional and invites you to be an active participant in the narrative of your journey. It's about collecting moments, not just souvenirs, and allowing the essence of a destination to weave itself into the fabric of your life. So, the next time you plan a getaway, consider embracing the art of crafting an unforgettable experience vacation—a journey where every step is a dance, every encounter a story, and every destination a chapter in the book of your extraordinary life.

"Why would Miami be advertising a different country. 🤔"
Our airport also does the Christmas Tree Deco balls. You get clear balls to fill with memories from the destination you're going to or coming back from. The balls then be used as ornaments for the various trees and the other you get to take home as a souvenir.
And he just posted "Hello Miami" pictures on IG in a backseat of a car. No Costa Rican beaches for JL just yet.
If you say so. 🤷🏼♀️

Costa Rica Day 5:
We woke up and met our tour guide at wo avinon (a restaurant that had an airplane in it). I ate a fancy breakfast overlooking canopy’s of trees and the ocean. I saw a few macaws flying overhead at breakfast which was cool. We then met up with our tour guide river; who took us toward the park. He showed us where to park- we paid 3000 colones for parking ($6, 500ieh colones to the dollar), then we headed into the park. We saw a red eyed tree frog, some lizards, an iguana, hummingbirds, white faced monkeys, howler monkeys, Pauraque, sloths, many animals!
We then hung out at playa Manuel a Otto up and there were iguanas, monkeys and hermit crabs hanging out at the beach.
I snorkeled near the left side of the beach and did see some cool fish!
We then checked into our new hotel the Teva hotel. It was very “hip” and played music like Jack Johnson, John Mayer, Nora jones. Not like a cool Costa Rican Place but felt a little westernized. It had its own hiking trails but nothing impressive and lots of leaves on the trails- honestly I wouldn’t recommend doing it considering how many poisonous animals there are in the area- a lot of guides suggesting staying on trails for that reason I think.
For dinner we drove down to a seafood restaurant in quepos. The views of the ocean were as amazing as being on the beach with the palm trees the day before but the sea food was good! I had a whole crab for the first time and we think mussels, octopus, it was delicious.
I got some souvenirs in town and we listened to a band plan then we drove home, and went to sleep.

The Complete Guide to Flights and Airports in Costa Rica
Flying can be stressful, especially in a foreign country. The following guide will inform you on international flight options to Costa Rica, give you an idea of what to expect at the airport, and hopefully leave you vacation-ready for your trip to Costa Rica.
How many international airports are in Costa Rica?
Costa Rica has two international airports: San Jose (Juan Santamaria International Airport – SJO) and Liberia (Daniel Oduber International Airport- LIR).
Which Costa Rica airport is best to fly into San Jose or Liberia?
Most destinations are accessible from San Jose. If your first travel destination is the Guanacaste region, you’ll want to fly into Liberia. If you’re headed to the Nicoya Peninsula, Arenal Volcano, or Monteverde, you might want to compare both San Jose and Liberia flights. Of course, there are exceptions.
Getting the Best Airfare Prices
If you are price or time-sensitive, you may want to compare the flights coming in at both airports. To get the best airfare prices, it helps to have flexible travel dates. Additionally, you may want to consider traveling in the green season (May – December) when ticket prices come down. The months of September and October have some of the lowest ticket prices. I would recommend checking Google Flights and creating an email notification alerting you to changes in the airfare if you aren’t quite ready to buy.
Related Article: Best Time to Visit Costa Rica: What to Expect Month by Month
Can you fly direct to Costa Rica?
Yes, if you’d prefer to fly direct, there are non-stop flight options to Costa Rica. There are many non-stop flight options from major cities in the United States. British Airways has also recently launched direct flights from London Gatwick (LGW) to San Jose (SJO).
Talk to an Expert
If you need help with this at all, our Costa Rica Experts can advise. If you have flexibility in your itinerary, I would suggest working with a Costa Rica Expert to align your day-by-day with your preferred flight. That’s the beauty in custom itineraries.
Our Experts can also coordinate your vacation to minimize travel time. Choosing the wrong airport for your destination may lead to lost beach and rainforest time. Another consideration: just because you have flown into San Jose doesn’t mean you should fly out of San Jose on a multi-destination trip. Get an Expert opinion!
Juan Santamaria International Airport, San Jose
Juan Santamaria International Airport is located in the city of Alajuela, a 20-minute drive from downtown San Jose. It has the most international arrivals and departures in the country. The San Jose airport has a few large souvenir shops, bars, cafes, a few smaller specialty shops, and a small duty-free shop.
The capital city of San Jose is also an up-and-coming cultural hub with a lively dining scene, colorful markets, and buzzing city life. There are many accommodation options in downtown San Jose and the surrounding Central Valley where travelers might choose to stop off and explore for a night or two before continuing on to their next destination.
Daniel Oduber International Airport, Liberia
Liberia is the capital of the Guanacaste region in the northwest of Costa Rica. Compared to downtown San Jose, Liberia is smaller with fewer surrounding accommodation options. The Liberia international airport is also smaller than the San Jose international airport, but it’s still modern with some small shops, cafes, and a small duty-free shop.
Most of the travelers flying into Liberia are visiting Guanacaste, Monteverde, or Arenal/La Fortuna. Many of the beach hotels in the Guanacaste region (e.g. Papagayo Peninsula or Tamarindo Beach) are roughly one hour or less drive from the airport.
When you arrive in Costa Rica
Before landing in Costa Rica, flight attendants will pass out immigration and customs forms to be completed on the plane. Upon deplaning, you’ll follow signs for immigration and wait in line for the immigration booth. At the immigration booth, you’ll answer some questions about your stay and show your passport and immigration form to the agent.
It’s helpful to have printed documents outlying your itinerary to show immigration – such as the travel packet we provide or confirmations of things booked on your own. The airports have free WiFi but it can be spotty or hard to connect to so we recommend doing this from home before your trip.
You will then head to baggage claims, through customs, and on to your transportation. At customs, you will give an agent your customs form and put your luggage through an x-ray scanner (this should only take a minute). Once you’ve connected with your driver, you will be transported to your pre-arranged hotel.
Entry requirements
US passports are mandatory and must be valid at least six months or longer beyond your travel dates. Your passports need to be in good condition as Costa Rican immigration can deny entry if passports are damaged in any way. Please check the entry requirements if you are arriving from other countries. We do recommend carrying a photocopy of your passport and that you leave the original in a safe place as you travel about Costa Rica.
It is recommended that minors under the age of 18 years traveling with only one parent or guardian have additional documentation in an effort to prevent international child abduction. Minors under 18 years traveling with adults with a different last name are also advised to have additional documentation. Many countries have initiated such procedures for minors at entry and exit points. We would suggest a notarized letter from the parent or guardian not traveling if leaving their country of residence.
Domestic Airport Connections
Aerobell Airlines, Sansa Airlines, and Skyway Air are Costa Rica’s domestic airlines. Domestic flight durations are generally under 60 minutes.
Upon landing at the San Jose international airport, if you are connecting to a remote destination like the Osa Peninsula, the Nicoya Peninsula, or Tortuguero National Park, you’ll likely take a domestic flight. San Jose has a domestic terminal in addition to the international terminal. The domestic terminal is not connected to the international airport and travelers can walk, grab a taxi, or hire a driver to take them between terminals.
San Jose has the most domestic flights going in and out. In some cases, domestic flights to certain locations can only be taken to/from San Jose. For example, even though Tambor is a bit closer to Liberia, the only domestic flights to/from Tambor are through San Jose. If traveling across the country, from Drake Bay to Liberia for instance, there may be a short layover in San Jose.
To accommodate the small airstrips throughout the country, domestic planes are generally single or double engine propeller planes holding under 20 passengers. For this reason, domestic airlines have luggage limits ranging from 30-40 lbs per person depending on the airline – one more reason to pack light!
Charter flights are also available for travelers interested in flying private. In the San Jose province, the Tobias Bolanos International Airport (Pavas) operates charter flights. For travelers landing at Juan Santamaria International Airport and connecting to a charter flight departing from Tobias Bolanos International Airport, travelers will need to arrange for a driver or a taxi between airports.
Car Rentals
For travelers who opt to rent a car, the majority of car rental agencies have desks at the airport. After customs and immigration, you’ll want to find the appropriate car rental desk, give them your reservation, and be on your way. Car rental drop-offs are also arranged in advance based on your departing airport.
Airport Money Exchange
If you’d like, you can also exchange money at the airport. There is an ATM in the baggage claim area and a money exchange booth as you clear customs. However, you can also exchange money at your hotel. Rental car companies accept US dollars.
Departing Costa Rica
Many destinations are over an hour away from the airport and travelers should plan flight times accordingly. We recommend flights leave after 12 pm if a client is staying more than two hours away from any given airport. We recommend checking in at least three hours prior to international flights.
Domestic flights can make transportation upon leaving Costa Rica easier & more convenient, but again we recommend a buffer time of at least 2 hours between when a domestic flight lands and an international flight takes off – mostly due to unpredictable weather within Costa Rica and the fact that local airports are small and can experience delays if there are too many planes on the runway.
There is a $31 departure tax that must be paid in cash or by Visa/MasterCard upon departure from both international airports. The departure tax can be paid in advance at some banks or hotels. Some airlines include it in their ticket price; while others do not. Please check with your airline. If you are playing your departure tax at the airport, it can be paid at the airport at a special counter before you have checked-in.

Celebrating our Week
Yesterday was quite the wild ride— literally! We woke up early for breakfast and left the finca (farm) we stayed at all week to go zip-lining. For the majority of us, going zip lining was a first time activity, and was equal parts exciting and nerve-wracking. The views were spectacular; however for some, fear overshadowed the majesty of the nature. We were overwhelmingly proud that every single student overcame their fears to conquer, each of the seven zip-line rides and their fear of heights! Seeing their glowing faces at the end of the experience made it all worth while— we could see the confidence swelling within them.
During the journey, our group got to chat periodically with a family traveling from Australia. They asked us about our group and the purpose of the trip. We told them about how hard your students worked to be on the trip, that it was a service trip, and that your kids had to endure a rigorous and competitive application process in order to get accepted.
While we were waiting to board the busses and some students were going to pay for photos of the day, one of the dads of the Aussie group generously offered to pay for EVERY CHILD’S pictures (over $216 in value.) I know I speak for everyone when I say we were blown away by his generosity and the way he showed love to a group of strangers. It was a beautiful moment that really drilled home the message of doing something good for others and the purpose of our service work.
After the zip line, we proceeded to have lunch in La Fortuna and then made our way back to San José after a quick pit-stop for souvenirs. At night, we had a “closing ceremony” facilitated by our fantastic Rustic Pathways guides who really brought out the best in the students. We spent over an hour being vulnerable with one another, sharing out what we appreciated about each and every kid on the trip. Make sure to ask to see the Costa Rican flag bracelet your kid is wearing, symbolically tied around them by the person on their left, signifying our strong connection and ties we now share.
Despite some bumps along the way, it has been amazing watching your students grow as individuals and collectively in a mere weeks time. We applaud those that really took these 7 days to push towards their outer limit of their comfort zones, be it through trying new foods, staying in unusual accommodations, or participating in difficult physical labor.
Surely, this will be a trip we as adults we will never forget, and we hope your children remain forever touched by it as well.
Pura vida,
Kristen, Korina, and Jeremiah

Day 5
Today we woke up to a leisurely morning at La Hacienda JJ. Our travelers relaxed by the pool and packed for our 5 hour journey back to La Guacima. Along the way we stopped at a souvenir store to stretch our legs and buy reminders of Costa Rica. When we arrived at our homestay destination in La Guacima the teachers and our guide accompanied students to their host families. This was an anxious moment for many. As you can see from the pictures, the host moms greeted our students with open arms. As we are writing this we are hoping students have enjoyed a pleasant night of getting to know their new Costa Rican families. Tomorrow the bus will arrive at about 8:00 and we will do a walking tour of the capital city, San Jose. Students will eat lunch with their families and then return to El Rancho for dance lessons.
