I accidentally did the Barbieheimer meme yesterday. So Wednesday my brother and I got tickets to Barbie in the afternoon, and we were looking for options for Oppenheimer a different day (because there aren't many showings because the movie is 3 hours long); but then, that night my mom tells me that the non-profit organization she works for and I volunteer to, has been invited to a showing of Oppenheimer so we can help organize a film forum (August 6th, the anniversary of Hiroshima, San José Costa Rica, if you're here keep posted) and since I'm part of the Film Commission I'm invited to, so yeah, Barbieheimer
And my brother wasn't invited, so he bought a ticket for the same showing we were invited to (this theater doesn't have assigned seating) and got to tag along.
Anyways, we are organizing the Film Forum for Oppenheimer, nothing yet because we got roped into it Wednesday, but it's August 6th, in the morning because the movie is 3 hrs long; and I loved both movies. Do not double feature, these movies are long (I'm still exhausted)

Note
Hi, this is the anon that sent you the cr information back in april.
A legislature was just signed with the film commission of costa rica (CRFC) and Cartago’s cathedral has been approved as a filming spot, along side Tamarindo CR and Esparza CR.
A topographer has yet to be sent to Isla Tortuga for the turtle protection program that has been put in place.
This is all I know for now. It’s your discretion to withhold or publicly announce this information.
Tumblr media
The fact that all of these came in back to back to back amongst other drama now makes me feel like this situation is more than likely trolling. Maybe it’s not, but for those out there looking for more info on this, huge grain of salt for now.

Scottish triathlete and world champion on her way to Oscar glory.
Tumblr media
Scottish-born (Stirling) Lesley Paterson, 42, is an athlete, screenwriter and film producer who found fame in 2011 winning her first of three Triathlon World Championships, securing the rights to the film adaptation of the novel All Quiet On The Western Front for screen adaptation 16 years ago alongside producer Ian Stokell. It cost $200,000 (£165.591) to secure the rights.
Tumblr media
A particular race in Costa Rica, she went into this race needing to win the money to pay for the novel and she broke her shoulder the day before the race.
She co-wrote the screenplay for a 2022 remake of All Quiet on the Western Front, which won seven BAFTAs
The pair picked up the Bafta for best-adapted screenplay. Was a “tough journey” to get the novel made into a film, using her triathlon race winnings to renew the rights deal each year.
Tumblr media
Three years ago, the couple enlisted the help of German producers Berger and Grunert to bring the project to life.
Tumblr media
Eventually, in 2020, a conversation at a film trade fair in Berlin brought them into a partnership with a German team led by director Edward Bergen. His main experience was in television, and their lead actor Felix Kammerer had never appeared in a film before, but Netflix commissioned the film and production got underway.
Tumblr media
The original book, which remains the best-selling German novel of all time, was "always important" to the producers, having first read it as adolescents, a "unique opportunity" that they "approached with respect."

And is nominated for nine Oscars at tonight’s Academy Awards. Both Lesley and the new film version of All Quiet on the Western Front will be at the 95th Academy Awards in Los Angeles. The German language film, made by Netlfix, has been nominated in nine categories including Best Adapted Screenplay.
All Quiet On The Western Front is widely expected to win an Oscar 🎥, something that will bring to a close an almost year-long awards season that has seen it grace red carpets and awards shows podiums.

Lesley and her husband Simon Marshall, a sports psychologist, have now set up their own production company and hope to make a film in Scotland at the end of the year.
It's a psychological thriller, set in the highlands of Scotland. It's very intense and moody and deals with mental health issues but lots of action in there too. She has the script, a great director and a wonderful production team, and they’ve applied for all sorts of funding like BFI and Creative Scotland. The goal is to shoot in October, and November and support the industry in Scotland.

MGM+ is reteaming with Lionsgate for a content licensing deal to expand into Latin America as part of its international roll out.
Under the pact, the MGM+ offer will boast leading series and movies from Lionsgate and Starz, alongside iconic films from MGM Studios across Latin America with a monthly rate of R$14.9 ($3) in Brazil and MX$59 ($3.42) in Mexico.
The Amazon-owned service will also be accessible to current Lionsgate+ customers who joined via Prime Video Channels in Brazil and Mexico starting in January. It will be rebranded to MGM+ across Latin America to align with the recent rebrands in Europe and the U.S. (where it was previously known as Epix).
MGM previously joined forces with Lionsgate to enter a raft of international markets and will now have a footprint in 24 countries, including Germany, Austria, Italy, Spain, Netherlands, Belgium, Brazil, Mexico, Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Venezuela, Nicaragua and Uruguay.
In Europe, an increasingly competitive market for streamers, MGM+ has become the second highest ranking Prime Video Channel since launching less than a year ago, thanks to its offer of flagship series and movies, along with its fairly priced subscription.
With this latest deal, the service is on track to become one of the top five Prime Video Channel in Latin America. The premium exclusive roster will span series such as “Power,” “Power Book I-IV” (pictured), “Black Mafia Family,” “The Serpent Queen” and “Spartacus”; as well as blockbuster movie franchises “The Hunger Games,” “Kill Bill,” “Saw,” “Twilight” and Tyler Perry’s movies, and the legacy hit series “Mad Men,” “Nashville” and “Weeds,” among others.
“The expansion of MGM+ in the Latin American market further cements Amazon’s commitment to invest in and grow the MGM+ brand, and to enhance the subscriber experience,” said Chris Brearton, VP of Prime Video Studios corporate strategy.
Brearton said the company looks forward to “expanding our reach by introducing an extensive library of hit TV series from the popular ‘Power’ and ‘Black Mafia Family’ franchies to a rich catalog of films, including ‘The Hunger Games’ and ‘John Wick’ to additional audiences worldwide.” During a recent keynote at Content London, Brearton said MGM+ is setting different goals for each market and has opted for a gradual roll out rather than a “one-size fits all” strategy.
Brearton also suggested that MGM+ has learned from others’ missteps to forge its own path to success. “One thing we’ve seen others do is buy content for the world or commission series and put them out globally, but that assumes global market tastes are consistent (…) That is not something we believe in. We believe in tailoring on a bespoke basis to the needs and wants of that market,” said Brearton, who was on stage with MGM+ head Michael Wright. The executive also said the streamer will not be banking on volume, but mostly on quality and will seek to commission and acquire different content depending on markets’ specificities.
Agapy Kapouranis, Lionsgate president of international television and digital distribution, said Lionsgate and Starz content will now be available to MGM+ viewers in 24 countries around the world.

NUMBERS MATTER 121
チハルMK 、 おたこ、 川畑優、 AGF、 日野繭子、 大西蘭子
Thursday 22 October – 9pm (UK time) | Free
IKLECTIK YouTube Channel: https://youtu.be/HXFmH46kVEQ
Why numbers matter: Japan, a country with a population of over 124.2 million, is ranked at 121 in the Gender Inequality Index (GII) published by Human Development Reports 2020.  Japanese women got the vote in 1946 – earlier than China (1949), Liechtenstein (1984) and Switzerland (1993).
In the ranking chart of the Global Gender Gap 2020, the top ten reads as follows: 1: Iceland; 2: Norway; 3: Finland; 4: Sweden; 5: Nicaragua; 6: New Zealand; 7: Ireland; 8: Spain; 9: Rwanda; 10: Germany. The UK ranked 21, following Albania at number 20. Though Japan falls some 100 places behind the UK, the latter’s ranking at 21 is nothing to be proud of either. Clearly there is plenty of work to be done in both countries. Hence, NUMBERS MATTER 121 features four special projects led by Japanese women: Chiharu MK, Otaco, Yu Kawabata (in collaboration with German poemproducer AGF) and Mayuko Hino.
Footnote: In the Press Freedom Index published in 2020, Japan and the UK don’t fare much better than in the GII. Out of 180 countries listed, the UK is ranked at 33 and Japan at 66. The countries listed from one to ten are as follows: Norway, Finland, Denmark, the Netherlands, Jamaica, Costa Rica, Switzerland, New Zealand, Portugal and Germany.
Programme:
“Paramnesia 2020” by CHIHARU MK “Tomodachi” by OTACO “Hamaderea Park ” by YU KAWABATA (sound) + AGF (visuals) “Toyosu 2020″ by MAYUKO HINO
Tumblr media
Chiharu MK is from Sapporo. Primarily trained as a composer, she studied the acousmonium, that is, the sound diffusion system, at INA-GRM studio in Paris. Since completing her studies in 2002, she has become an internationally recognised electroacoustic sound artist, either performing or creating sound installations for festival, gallery or non-concert hall spaces in Europe, Hong Kong and Japan. For Intersect 2015, she commissioned the non-Japanese artists Francisco López, Sogar and Taylor Deupree to compose sounds for a 17.1 multi Channel Speaker System (consisting of seven speakers + ten screen speakers + one woofer) in Sapporo city centre’s underground walkway. Chiharu MK has also released three solo CDs: https://www.studio-cplus.net/
Chiharu MK’s new multimedia work Paramnesia 2020 is based on her original piece for Hong Kong Art Centre’s 40th anniversary multi-channel Sound Forms festival in 2018.
This film shows her performing the piece inside Glass Pyramid, nicknamed Hidamari – Japanese for Sunny Spot, it’s the centrepiece of Sapporo’s Moerenuma Park, designed by Japanese American sculptor Isamu Noguchi (1904–1988). Construction work on the park actually began in the year Noguchi died, and it opened in 2005. The film also shows Chiharu MK recording on Ishikari beach, just north of Sapporo.
Tumblr media
Taking her name from tako, the Japanese word for octopus, Otaco is originally from Japan’s northernmost main island Hokkaido. An electronic musician and vocalist, Otaco is one of the most vibrant and engaging performers to emerge from the alternative music scene anywhere in Japan.
Now living in Tokyo, she operates a home studio set-up of a rhythm box with a synthesizer; she samples and syncs sounds into a computer, running them into real-time sequences to construct her outre pop-electronica songs and instrumentals. Her music can be heard at https://otacosan.bandcamp.com/music. Otaco also plays guitar when she leads Gotou, an occasional rock trio formed out of homage to early 1980s West Berlin groups Mania D and Malaria!. She appeared for the first time in the UK during Coding In GE 2018 festival for women and technology.
Tumblr media
Antye Greie also know as AGF was born and raised in East Germany. She is a vocalist, digital songwriter, producer, performer, e-poet, calligrapher, digital media artist. In the last decade Greie has released more than 20 full length records and played over 300 live performances worldwide. AGF runs her own production company AGF Production  – http://antyegreie.com She first worked with Yu Kawabata on her 2015 album A Deep Mysterious Tone, the third in AGF’s series of settings and poetry interpretations from different countries, this one featuring Japanese poets and writers including Noe Ito, Fumiko Kaneko, Shikubu Izumi, Blue Stocking editor and writer Hiratsuka Raicho, and more.
Yu Kawabata is a techno DJ active in Japan and Russia. This is Yu and AGF’s second collaboration. On their first, AGF set to music Yu’s reading of a waka poem, written by the 12th century court lady Yūshi Naishinnō-ke no Kii, enumerated as one of the Thirty-Six Female Immortals of Poetry. On their latest, Yu has created new music for a film by AGF. https://soundcloud.com/yukawabata
Tumblr media
Since resuming music in 2011 after a ten year break to study Chinese medicine, Mayuko Hino has reclaimed her status as queen of noise.
A prolific live performer, Hino is best known for C.C.C.C. (Cosmic Coincidence Control Center), the group she formed in 1990 with Hiroshi Hasegawa, Fumio Kosakai and Ryuichi Nagakubo. In their early phase, the band grabbed attention by combining noise music with Hino’s sadomasochism performances using bondage ropes and dripping candle wax. Hino has since been a member of Mne-Mic, DFH-M3 and her most recent group Transparentz with Akira Sakata, who split up in January 2020.
Whether solo or in her various group projects, Hino experiments with the function of noise music as a transdisciplinary medium, in the process to breaking the boundaries surrounding performance art: urban structure against man, art against non art, activity versus rest.
In 2018 Mayuko Hino performed at Iklectic’s Coding In GE Festival alongside and in collaboration with Ramleh. The same year she released her second solo album Lunisolar. In addition to self-made instruments, Hino plays noise with her six-theremin oscillators (in bright pink), a unique device specially made for her by Ryo Araishi (aka ichion)
This year Hino had planned to resume activities with C.C.C.C. to mark the US reissue of their first four albums, but unfortunately their plans had to be put on hold because of the pandemic.
“There’s a sense of momentum to be found in Hino’s noise; it’s rarely static… At the hands of Hino it seems astral travelling is as much out-of-this-world as it is an out-of-body experience… on Lunisolar she continues with the ever evolving atmospheric and psychedelic sound that energised the noise of C.C.C.C.” (Compulsion Online)
“Hino Mayuko makes no bones about her wide-ranging noisician flexibility here, nor her honored place in the contemporary Japanoise scene… Unlike a bevy of artists who just make ear-splitting sonic somersaults, Hino’s sound is more impressionistic and staggered in its delivery, incorporating a yin/yang of the industrial and environmental.” (Tone-Shift)
RANKO ONISHI (Mne-mic): voice
Performing artist Ranko Onishi was born in Hokkaido. She moved to Tokyo where she joined Shuji Terayama’s Tenjo Sajiki theatre company in 1980. She was a second year student of dancer Min Tanaka in 1982 and became a full member of Tanaka’s company in 1984. Five years later in 1989 she performed with Keiji Haino. She and Hino work together in the duo Mne-mic, featuring Hino on electronics, Theremin and synthesizer, and Onishi on voice, water and fogphone. Their album Gulf Stream was released by Alchemy Records in 1999.
Curator Keiko Yoshida’s notes for NUMBERS MATTER 121
While researching texts for AGF’s 2015 CD A Deep Mysterious Tone I developed a profound interest in women’s history in Japan. AGF and I first met and begain talking about her project while she was taking part in my hometown Sapporo’s International Arts Festival in 2014. For the album she compiled and set to music Japanese writings and poems from the ninth century to the present day, and commissioned the female electronic musicians Ryoko Akama (UK), Kyoka (Germany), Tujiko Noriko (France) and Yu Kawabata to read her selections. She had met them at European festivals, and as she got to know them she learnt these female electronic musicians are not treated very well when they’re back home in Japan.
Indeed NUMBERS MATTER 121 took seed in these discussions on women and Japan with AGF. In some ways it’s also a sequel to “Coding in GE”, the 2018 Iklectik festival offering a platform to female electronic musicians, for which we got funding from Sasakawa Foundation UK, and in which Otaco, Mayuko Hino and AGF participated.
Another question addressed in NUMBERS MATTER 121 is the subject of decentralisation.  I consciously asked musicians from outside Tokyo to participate in this project.
Currently working on a photo story book about 1980s London and Berlin.
Please support the project buying an e-ticket (#nameyourprice). ** https://buytickets.at/iklectik/439711 **

ANOTHER  HOUND  -  A  SPECIAL  ONE
________________________________________________________________
The Hound of the Baskervilles is probably the best known story by ACD. Over 20 film and television versions of it have been made. And in everyone of those adaptations the original story has been changed a little bit in some way or another. But there is probably no classical, victorian version which differs quite as much as this one, from 2002, with Richard Roxburgh and Ian Hart as Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson (X). And some of those changes are very interesting, particularly with regard to Sherlock BBC.
Tumblr media
Warning:  Major spoilers - in fact, all the spoilers - are under the cut! If you haven’t seen the movie and want to be surprised, don’t go further!
The legend of the Baskerville Hound
As mentioned in ‘Lady Holmes’, the greatest change has been made to the old legend of the hound itself.
Tumblr media
At the time of the Civil War, the Manor of Baskerville was held by one Hugo, a wild, profaned, godless man. Hugo accused his wife of having an affair with a young man who owned lands near to the Baskerville estate. Mad with jealousy, he beat her savagely. She fled across the moor. Hugo gave chase. He caught her and he killed her, but her hound, devoted to its Mistress, had followed. It flew at Hugo and tore out his throat even as Hugo stabbed the creature to death with his hunting knife. According to the legend, ever since, the ghost of the hound has plagued the family, prowling the moor, uttering piteous cries. A foul thing - great black beast with blazing eyes and dripping jaws.
Tumblr media
In this adaptation Sir Hugo Baskerville is not a single man, lusting after a yeoman’s daughter whom he abducts and carries away to Baskerville Hall to have his way with her. No pakt with the devil happens. Instead there is a husband, driven by murderous jealousy, because he suspects his wife of having an affair with another man. And a faithful dog kills that furious husband and gives its own life to protect the beloved mistress … unsuccessfully.
Cousins
Tumblr media
Stapleton and the Baskerville Boys
Once there were three Baskerville brothers …. on the left Charles the eldest, in the middle Sir Henry’s Father, whose name isn’t mentioned in the novel nor in this adaptation and the one in the chair is Rodger, the youngest brother and the black sheep of the family.
Tumblr media
In the original story the son of Rodger Baskerville, of the same name as his father, marries Beryl Garcia from Costa Rica. He changes his surname into Vandeleur when he returns to Engalnd with his wife, where he establishes a school in Yorkshire. When that business goes wrong the Vandeleurs move to Dartmoor and change their names into Jack and Beryl Stapleton. Still under the name Vandeleur though, he had become a recognized authority on entomology - the knowledge of insects. They also pretend to be brother and sister instead of a married couple.
Holmes learns at the British Museum that the name Vandeleur was given to a certain moth which the man, now called Stapleton, had been the first to describe.
This Jack Stapleton, former Vaneleur, originally Rodger Baskerville - nephew of Sir Charles and cousin of Sir Henry - has only one principal aim in view … the ownership and assets of the Baskerville estate.
The 2002 HOUND adaptation changes Stapleton’s history consederable. Rodger, the youngest Baskerville, ‘got a commission in the Guards but was drummed out … ‘conduct unbecomming’. He leaves England and the family assumes that he died penniless and alone. As big mistake, as it will turn out. ‘Late in life he married a whore named Mary Prescott’. They haveone child, a son called John. It isn’t mentioned if John Baskerville marries his wife Beryl abroad or after he has come to Engalnd. At some point he changes his name into Baker. Under that name he becomes a recognized authority on archaeology. Instead of butterflies this man collects skulls and bones and historical artefacts. When Mr. Baker and his wife Beryl move from Kent to Dartmoor they change their names again … this time into Jack and Beryl Stapleton. They also pretend to be brother and sister instead of a merried couple.
Holmes learns at the British Museum that a man named Baker had found an unique bronze dagger in Kent. It’s exactly this dagger Stapleton shows Dr. Watson on his first visit at Merripit House and he tells him that he had found it at Dartmoor. Big mistake, because Watson reports this information to Holmes.
Tumblr media
This Jack Stapleton, former Baker, originally John Baskerville - nephew of Sir Charles and cousin of Sir Henry - has only one principal aim in view … and it’s not the money … it’s only revenge that drives him. ‘Revenge on a family that destroyed his father and allowed him to die a penniless, syphilitic drunk’
Forgone characters in this adaptation
Mr Frankland and his daughter Laura Lyons are completely omitted. Cartwright, the boy who delivers messages and food when Holmes hides on the moor is also missing, just like Dr. Mortimer’s cane and because of it the famous cane deduction scene at 221b Baker Street. In return a new character has been added …. Mrs. Mortimer, the doctors wife and …. medium. (Dr. Mortimer is played by John Nettles/Inspector Barnaby)
Tumblr media
Séance at Merripit House
Sitting round the table (left to right) are Dr. Watson, Mr. Stapleton, Dr. Mortimer, Mrs. Mortimer, Sir Henry and (viewed from behind) Beryl Stapleton. This scene is a nod to the Rathbone adaptation of the Hound from 1939.
Tumblr media
While in the Rathbone version the séance is interrupted only by a scary howling, in this one the monstrous hound itself appears and ‘knocks’ at the rain-swept window. A valiant Dr. Watson is the first one outside …. armed only with a chair. But as quickly as the hound had emerged out of the stormy night, the beast has vanished without a trace by then.
Tumblr media
Love is the bait
In the original story it is Laura Lyons who writes the letter to Sir Charles Baskerville and makes the disastrous appointment that leads to his death. A letter dictated by Jack Stapleton who pretends to be in love with Laura, that he wants to marry her. Laura, still married to a man who had deserted her, hasn’t the money to afford a divorce. And so Stapleton comes up with the idea that she should ask Sir Charles for help, who had done so before. After Laura Lyons has sent the letter, Stapleton feigns a change of mind and offers to pay for her divorce himself. That’s why Mrs. Lynons foregoes her appointment with Charles Baskerville and Stapleton has a free run and is able to frighten his uncle successfully to death.
Tumblr media
As mentioned above the character Laura Lyons doesn’t exist in this adaptation. Therefore someone else has to send the fatal note to Sir Charles. This part is assigned to Miss Beryl Stapleton. Of course, as the unmarried sister of Stapleton she can’t ask Sir Charles to fund her divorce. Near the end of the story it turns out that Stapleton has set up his wife as potential love interrest for Charles Baskerville right from the start. The note she sends is actually an invitation for a date. And Sir Charles takes the bait and dies.
When Henry Baskerville turns up, as the unexpected heir of the estate, Stapleton is willing to play the same game again. This time though his wife crosses his plans. Beryl sends an anonymous letter to Sir Henry even before she meets him in person. And after they get aquainted, it becomes clear that both are falling in love with each other rather quickly. In the end Beryl Stapleton refuses to obey her husbands will.
Tumblr media
It’s Christmas at Baskerville
Another major change concerns the date of the Baskerville case. The original story is set in October.
Baskerville Hall, October 13th. MY DEAR HOLMES: My previous letters and telegrams have kept you pretty well up to date as to all that has occurred in this most God-forsaken corner of the world. ……   (ACD HOUND)
In the 2002 adaptation the case comes to its violent end at Christmas Day. And the night before, Baskerville Hall is illuminated festively. Many guest are invited. Sir Henry welcomes the ladies with a kiss unter the mistletoe.
Tumblr media
Even a little stage is set for a nice Christmas play, starring a knight in shining armour, a grim looking Father Christmas and … a monstrous hound.
Tumblr media
Dramatic highlight of the play …. a fight between knight and hound …
Tumblr media
And while everyone enjoys the rare Christmas festivity at Baskerville Hall, Sherlock Holmes leaves the party early and secretly. He has work to do and crosses the moor to breaks into Merripit House, looking for the final clue to prove Jack Stapletons true identity.
A foe worthy of our steel …..
Tumblr media
That’s how Sherlock Holmes describes his opponent to Dr. Watson. Stapleton and Holmes meet for the first time during the Christmas festivity at Baskerville Hall and it’s impossible to overlook that Stapleton is thrilled to compete with the famous detective.
Tumblr media
STAPLETON: You interest me very much. I’d hardly expected so dolichocephalic a skull …. or such well marked supraorbital developement. Would you object to my running my finger along your parietal fissure?
HOLMES: I should object in the strongest possible terms.
STAPLETON: A casst of your skull until the original is available would be an ornament to any anthropological museum! I must confess …..
Tumblr media
The Stapleton character in this adaptation is indeed a foe worthy of Sherlock Holmes. Have never seen a better one. And the dialoge above reminds me very much at the one between Holmes and Professor Moriarty in The Final Problem …. only the other way round.
MORIARTY: You have less frontal development than I should have expected,
Tumblr media
Holmes the addict
In canon there are only two stories where Holmes’ drug habit is directly observed.
"Which is it to-day?" I asked,—"morphine or cocaine?" He raised his eyes languidly from the old black-letter volume which he had opened. "It is cocaine," he said,—"a seven-per-cent. solution. Would you care to try it?"
This is the very first scene of The Sign of Four. Holmes takes a dose of cocain and Dr. Watson can only prevent him from taking another one by asking him to deduce the poket watch of his late brother. After that famous deduction scene Dr. Watson wants to know:
“May I ask whether you have any professional inquiry on foot at present?"
"None. Hence the cocaine. I cannot live without brain-work. What else is there to live for? Stand at the window here. Was ever such a dreary, dismal, unprofitable world? See how the yellow fog swirls down the street and drifts across the dun-colored houses. What could be more hopelessly prosaic and material? What is the use of having powers, doctor, when one has no field upon which to exert them? Crime is commonplace, existence is commonplace, and no qualities save those which are commonplace have any function upon earth."
That’s the moment when a young lady - Mary Morstan -  is announced by Mrs. Hudson and the case of lost Agra treasure unfolds. It is well known that this case ends with Dr. Watson’s engagement to Mary Morstan and Sherlock Holmes turning once again to his seven percent solution of cocain..
"For me," said Sherlock Holmes, "there still remains the cocaine-bottle." And he stretched his long white hand up for it.
The other story where Dr. Watson adresses Holmes’ drug habit is The Missing Three Quarter. Here too he names the lack of work - unbearable boredom - as the most dangerous trigger for Holmes to fall back on drugs.
‘I had learned to dread such periods of inaction, for I knew by experience that my companion’s brain was so abnormally active that it was dangerous to leave it without material upon which to work. For years I had gradually weaned him from that drug mania which had threatened once to check his remarkable career. Now I knew that under ordinary conditions he no longer craved for this artificial stimulus, but I was well aware that the fiend was not dead but sleeping, and I have known that the sleep was a light one and the waking near when in periods of idleness I have seen the drawn look upon Holmes’s ascetic face, and the brooding of his deep-set and inscrutable eyes.’
And this is where the HOUND adaptation from 2002 differs completely from canon. Not only that Holmes doesn’t take any drugs in the original HOUND story. What most surprised me are the times when Holmes is shown using cocain. It happens two times.
At Baker Street, right after Dr. Mortimer has left them to pick up Sir Henry from the railway station. Holmes decides to inject himself with cocain despite he has just accepted a new and very interesting case. Dr. Watson watches disapprovingly but doesn’t utter a word.
Tumblr media
In a toilet at the Exeter railway station where they just met DI Lestrade who will join them later to catch the clever murderer Stapleton red handed. Its only hours before the dangerous final act of the case. Dr. Watson and DI Lestrade are sitting at a table in the station restaurant, waiting for Holmes to reappear from the toilet.
Tumblr media
Stapleton’s hound from hell
Some time ago I did a little comparison of the hounds from the 2002 adaption and from Sherlock BBC. Both hounds are no real dogs and neither of them is luninous due to a treatment with phosphor like in the original. (As far as I know only the Granada adaptation with Jeremy Brett presents a phosphorescent hound)
The hound from the 2002 adaptation was created by a mix of animatronics and CGI (computer generated images).   (X)
And for the Sherlock BBC hound it was also the first time that CGI has been used on a large scale.  (X)
Tumblr media
Maybe this is the reason why both hounds share a certain resemblance with one another. It’s not so much their external appearance - that differs a lot - but rather the movement ot the creatures and the way how the attacking hounds are shot, which looks very similar.
Tumblr media
While the CGI hound works very well for Sherlock BBC, representing a drug induced vision of a monstrous creature in the mind, I can’t say the same for the hound in the 2002 adaptation. It is meant to be a real dog but that hound really looks like something out of a monster movie. More like a genetic breed created by a mix of bear and boar than a big and ill-treated dog. Maybe using a real dog would have been a wiser choice.
Tumblr media
And unlike the original story, Sir Henry doesn’t get off with just a bad fright. He is seriously wounded by the hound and lucky to survive the vicious attack.
Tumblr media
A higly dramatic finale
At this point the final act of the case starts unfolding in rapid pace. While Holmes and Watson follow the hound into the moor and are able to rescue Sir Henry in the very last second, DI Lestrade stays back to deal with Stapleton in Merripit House. Watson carries the badly wounded man back to Baskerville Hall and Holmes returns to Merrypit House to confront the murderer - who is held at gun point by the DI - with the damning results of his investigations. Stapleton is completely unimpressed and tells him:
“Conceited, opinionated, egoistical, vain.  All disembodied mind and cold calculation. You are no match for me!”
After a while the scene is interupted by Dr. Watson who has left Sir Henry in the care of Dr. Mortimer and the Barrymores and rode then back to Marripit House. His first question concerns the whereabouts of Beryl Stapleton. When no one has an answer for him, he starts searching.
Tumblr media
“I have no wife”
Over and over Jack Stapleton repeats those words while Holmes confronts him with more than enough evidence that Beryl isn’t his sister but his wife. But it turns out Stapleton says the truth. He has indeed no wife. At that point in the story he is actually already widowed. Beryl had been murdered by her own husband shortly before he sat down with Henry Baskerville to have a little Christmas dinner. And it is Dr. Watson who finds her.
Tumblr media
Outraged Watson wants to shoot Stapleton. Holmes steps in and tries to wrench the gun from Watson’s hands. DI Lestrade gets distracted. Stapleton seizes the opportunity and uses the element of surprise. He grabs Lestrade’s gun, knocks him out and aims a shot at Holmes .... but hits Watson instead. Then he runs out of the door.
Tumblr media
Injured Dr. Watson sends Holmes after Stapleton into the moor. Holmes almost catches up with the man but then runs straight into the mire. Stapleton turns back to Holmes and watches him slowly sink deeper and deeper into the bog while mocking him with great delight. Finaly he decides to have mercy and put a bullet in Holmes’ head before he drowns helplessly.
Tumblr media
Never make the calculation without John Watson though. Of course, the good doctor emerges out of the fog at the very last second to save his Holmes. He shoots Stapleton and then - despite his wounded arm/shoulder - pulls the detective out of the treacherous mire.
Tumblr media
What an eventful Christmas Day! High time to get back to London. Holmes has already reserved a box for Les Huguenots and thinks of a little dinner at Marcini’s on the way. Watson accepts.
Tumblr media
I hope you enjoyed the ride, although it was a bit long. Maybe I should add that this adaptation begins with a scene at the Turkish Bath.
Tumblr media
Despite that promising start though, this Holmes/Watson relaationship sadly lacks a bit the warmth and closeness that is portrayed, for example, in the adaptations with Brett/Burke, Livanow/Solomin, Frewer/Welsh or Howard/Crawford. Smiles and jokes between those two men are really rare in this one.

The Beauty of Cahuita National Park - Costa Rica Nature - Caribbean Coast
Cahuita National Park was one of our favorite places to visit while living in Puerto Viejo Costa Rica on the Caribbean side.  The nature and beauty in this region is breathtaking.  Take a journey with us in the park through the lens of Frank Weber (videographer) and enjoy just a few of the wonders of Cahuita National Park, where the jungle meets the ocean. Filmed by Frank Weber FWMedia: http://bit.ly/2y3hMLd Edited by Khalil Chapman using Final Cut Pro X on an iMac Check out iMac options & prices on Amazon: https://amzn.to/3svEtSj About Cahuita National Park (via Wikipedia): "Cahuita National Park is a terrestrial and marine national park in the Caribbean La Amistad Conservation Area of Costa Rica located on the southern Caribbean coast in Limón Province, connected to the town of Cahuita. It protects beaches and lowlands and attracts tourists and other visitors who are able to snorkel in the protected marine area which contains the coralline reefs, as well as being a nesting ground for sea turtles. It covers a land area of 2,732 acres (1,106 ha), and a marine area of 55,200 acres (22,300 ha).[1] February through April typically have the best underwater visibility. This is also one of the nicest and least developed beaches in Costa Rica.[2] The 600-acre (242-ha) reef is known to have at least 35 species of coral, 140 species of molluscs, 44 species of crustaceans, and 123 species of fish. The outer reef is about 4 km long.[3] On land there are many types of animal as well including northern tamanduas, pacas, white-nosed coatis, raccoons, sloths, agoutis, mantled howlers and white-headed capuchins. It has a variety of birds as well including the green ibis, green-and-rufous kingfisher and keel-billed toucan. Marine mammals are also present including orcas.[4] Due to its close proximity to the town of Cahuita, the park's roads and facilities are well developed. Roads access the park from both the north and south. It can be reached on foot via Kelly Creek, which is just south of Cahuita." Note
So do you think it’s safe to say at this point that the Costa Rica stuff was a bored troll? I assumed it was from the beginning because stuff didn’t really make sense or add up imo.
We said last week we felt like it was a troll when multiple asks in a row were sent in about it literally back to back within a minute or so. It probably got overlooked in whatever last week’s drama was 😂🦎

Trump cancels Florida convention as coronavirus cases spike: Live | News
The United States surpassed four million cases of coronavirus on Thursday, amid a surge in cases, predominantly in southern and western states.
The death toll in Iran surged past 15,000 as 2,621 people tested positive in the last 24 hours.
Papua New Guinea has put out a call for emergency assistance to the WHO, fearful it might be facing widespread community transmission of the disease.
More than 15.4 million people around the world have been diagnosed with COVID-19, and at least 8.7 million people have recovered, while more than 631,000 have died – according to data from Johns Hopkins University.
Here are the updates:
Friday, July 24
04:32 GMT – US: Man arrested for pulling gun when asked to wear mask
A man was arrested in the United States for pointing a gun at a fellow shopper who asked him to wear a mask because of the coronavirus pandemic at a Walmart store in the state of Florida, according to the police.
Vincent Scavetta, 28, was arrested for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and improper exhibition of a firearm, the Palm Beach sheriff’s office said.
“Welcome to PBC Jail, son. Let this be a lesson. It could have ended badly,” the office wrote on Twitter.

03:47 GMT – Costa Rica gets $300m loan
The Central American Bank for Economic Integration approved a $300m loan to Costa Rica to help stabilise the local economy, which has been hard-hit by restrictions aimed at containing the new coronavirus.
Street protests sparked by the economic impact of the virus erupted this week in the Latin American country, where the virus has killed 80 people and infected 13,129.
03:18 GMT – China reports 21 new cases, including 13 in Xinjiang
China reported 21 new coronavirus cases in the mainland for July 23, down from 22 cases a day earlier.
Of the new infections, the National Health Commission said 13 were in the far western region of Xinjiang and two were in Dalian city in the northeastern province of Liaoning. The remaining six were imported cases.

02:53 GMT – Disney postpones ‘Mulan’ debut, delays ‘Avatar’ and ‘Star Wars’
Walt Disney Co postponed the debut of its movie “Mulan” indefinitely and delayed the next film installments from two of its biggest franchises, “Avatar” and “Star Wars”, by one year.
“Mulan” was scheduled to reach theaters in March but its release has been postponed several times as many cinemas remain closed due to the coronavirus pandemic. The film had most recently been set to debut on August 21 and theater operators had hoped it would help spark a late-summer rebound for movie-going.
“Avatar” and “Star Wars” sequels, which were delayed due to disruption to production, are now set to debut in theaters in December 2022 and December 2023, respectively.

02:27 GMT – Australia’s Victoria posts highest daily death toll
Australia’s second most populous state of Victoria said six people died from the coronavirus in the last 24 hours, the highest daily toll since the pandemic began.
Victoria had reported five deaths a day earlier. The state recorded 300 new infections on Friday compared with 403 cases a day earlier.
02:00 GMT – S Africa closes schools amid ‘coronavirus storm’
Cyril Ramaphosa, the president of South Africa, said all public schools in the country would be taking a “short break” for four weeks amid the arrival of a “coronavirus storm”.
“This means that schools will be closed from 27 July and will re-open on 24 August,” he said during a briefing in Pretoria. There were some exceptions to the sudden school closures with Grade 12 teachers and learners set to return after a week of closer and Grade 7 after just two weeks, he said.
South Africa now has the fifth highest amount of coronavirus cases in the world. The total case-load surpassed 400,000 on Thursday.

01:47 GMT – Turkish parliament gives Erdogan authority to extend layoff ban
Turkey’s parliament approved a law allowing President Tayyip Erdogan to extend a layoff ban imposed to combat the economic impact of the coronavirus pandemic.
The layoff ban was first imposed in April for three months. With the new law, Erdogan will be allowed to extend the ban by three months each time until June 30, 2021.
Another section of the law authorizes Erdogan to decide for each sector whether to extend the short labour pay benefit, a system that provides additional wages to employees whose hours are cut short.
01:08 GMT – US deaths top 1,000 for a third day in a row
The US recorded more than 1,000 deaths from COVID-19 on Thursday, marking the third-straight day the nation passed that grim milestone as the pandemic escalates in southern and western states.
Fatalities nationwide were recorded at 1,014, with not all states reporting. Deaths were 1,135 on Wednesday and 1,141 on Tuesday.
Even though deaths are rising for a second week in a row, they remain well below levels seen in April, when 2,000 people a day on average died from the virus.
00:30 GMT – Trump cancels Republican convention in Florida
US President Donald Trump scrapped plans for a four-night Republican National Convention celebration in Jacksonville, Florida, that had been set to draw more than 10,000 people to a pandemic hot spot to mark his renomination.
“The timing for this event is not right,” Trump said at a White House news briefing. “It’s just not right with what’s happened recently, the flare-up in Florida. To have a big convention, it’s not the right time.”
He said he ordered his aides to cancel the event “to protect the American people”.
Republican delegates would still be meeting in Charlotte, North Carolina, the original venue for the convention, on the week beginning August 24, Trump said.

00:11 GMT – US watchdog finds flawed virus response at California prison
A federal prison complex in the US state of California struggled to contain the spread of the coronavirus because of staff shortages, limited use of home confinement and ineffective screening, according to a watchdog.
In a new report, the Office of the Inspector General at the Department of Justice said that two staff members at the Bureau of Prisons (BOP) facility in Lompoc, California, came to work in late March despite experiencing coronavirus symptoms, though those symptoms were not detected during screening.
Officials in March also failed to test or isolate an inmate who reported that he had begun having symptoms two days earlier. The inmate later tested positive at a hospital. As of mid-July, four inmates had died and more than 1,000 had tested positive.
Lompoc, which has four facilities, houses about 2,700 low-, minimum- and medium-security inmates.

Pittsburgh, early 1980s; a true story about Carl Begovich, a devoted husband and family man, a fourth-grade teacher, coach and recreation director whose life quickly turned upside down. After the steel mill economy crash that devastated his community and a tumultuous teachers’ strike, Carl lost his jobs teaching and coaching children. Then one day, an unforeseen opportunity presented itself. As Carl struggled for money to support his family, he dove headlong into the seedy underworld of drug smuggling and lived a fast life reminiscent of scenes from the hit television show Miami Vice and the film Scarface. From Florida to Pittsburgh, Costa Rica and the Bahamas, Carl embarked on a decades long illicit drug smuggling career, but after suffering a very personal loss during a drug deal gone bad – the mysterious disappearance of his childhood friend – Carl was forced into hiding from Pittsburgh’s Irish mafia. To get back to his family, and save his life, while on the lam, Carl completed what he hoped would be one last job, a daring bank heist, which earned him enough money to pay off the mob and return home to his family.

Director Statement
Largely, the documentaries we produce seem to focus on unique persons – human interest stories. The adage, “truth is stranger than fiction” is the perfect way to describe Carl Begovich and his story. As a kind and proud family man, what happened to him could easily happen to anyone. When time get tough, when you reach the end of your rope, you either tie a knot and hang on, or you let go. It’s what Carl did after the personal tragedy he suffered that makes his life truly interesting. We hope audiences find Carl’s story to be as fascinating and compelling as we do.

Philosophy and Opinions of Marcus Garvey by Amy Jaques Garvey 1923 Chapter 3 The Image of God
If the white man has the idea of a white God, let him worship his God as he desires. If the yellow man’s God is of his race let him worship his God as he sees fit. We, as Negroes, have found a new ideal. Whilst our God has no color, yet it is human to see everything through one’s own spectacles, and since the white people have seen their God through white spectacles, we have only now started out (late though it be) to see our God through our own spectacles. The God of Isaac and the God of Jacob let Him exist for the race that believes in the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob. We Negroes believe in the God of Ethiopia, the everlasting God — God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Ghost, the One God of all ages. That is the God in whom we believe, but we shall worship Him through the spectacles of Ethiopia.

African Fundamentalism
From the editorial by Marcus Garvey orinted in the Negro World, 6 June 1925, as a front-page editorial; written in Atlanta Federal Penitentiary. Original headlines omitted. Creed reprinted in slightly revised form, under the title “African Fundamentalism,” as a UNIA poster, sold by mail order through the Negro World by Amy Jacques Garvey, 1925.
Fellow Men of the Negro Race, Greeting:
The time has come for the Negro to forget and cast behind him his hero worship and adoration of other races, and to start out immediately, to create and emulate heroes of his own.
We must canonize our own saints, create our own martyrs, and elevate to positions of fame and honor black men and women who have made their distinct contributions to our racial history. Sojourner Truth is worthy of the place of sainthood alongside of Joan of Arc; Crispus Attucks and George William Gordon are entitled to the halo of martyrdom with no less glory than that of the martyrs of any other race. Toussaint L'Ouverture’s brilliancy as a soldier and statesman outshone that of a Cromwell, Napoleon and Washington; hence, he is entitled to the highest place as a hero among men. Africa has produced countless numbers of men and women, in war and in peace, whose lustre and bravery outshine that of any other people. Then why not see good and perfection in ourselves?

The Honorable Amy Ashwood Garvey speaks before a London crowd at Trafalgar Square, denouncing the Italian invasion of Ethiopia.“No race has been so noble in forgiving, but now the hour has struck for our complete emancipation. We will not tolerate the invasion of Abyssinia.“ Mrs. Garvey said: "In this struggle, the black women are marching beside the men. You white people brought us out of Africa to Christianize us and civilize us, but all the Christianity and civilization you gave us for 320 years was slavery. You have talked of ‘The White Man’s burden.’ Now we are carrying yours and standing between you and Fascism.” She warned the British Government that if this became a struggle between the “Blacks” and the “Whites” that three quarters of the people of the Empire are colored.
