Coming out of hibernation with a new fish! My partner and I picked up a beta today, a little girl we named Cosmo. I’ve never kept bettas before, it’s been so much fun watching her explore the tank.

Don’t really have an actual Halloween post but uh

I do have another batch of fankid doodles, because why not

Building off the idea that Lofty was born before the Gardenview shutdown. Sprout refused to leave them with anyone other than Cosmo, so if both were working one would take care of them while working. This led to many questions from patrons.

Vee has her own kid but uh…the first few times she tried to make them things didn’t go well. It took five attempts for one of them to actually come alive and one more attempt for them to live for more than an hour. She started naming them after attempt 2.

Just a sleepy Astro and Andromeda.

Honestly thinking of changing Barnaby’s parents from Finn and Shrimpo to Finn and Boxten (idk I’m a multishipper). Either way neither of them expected parenthood to be that hard after Cosmo and Sprout took to it surprisingly well. They used to work with kids, it couldn’t be that hard. It didn’t take long for them to realize that those two were either really good at pretending to not be tired or Lofty was just a really calm baby.

Flutter can’t hold Comma unfortunately on account of no hands :(. I think I’ll draw her wearing a swaddle with Comma in it later but for now Gigi will just have to hold him up to her.

I don’t have an exact age for most of the kids, just vague notions of ‘this one is older than that one’. Though I’ll always say Lofty is the oldest, the other oldest kids are Andromeda, Rosy Posy, Barnaby and Lulu (who I have not drawn). Percy is the youngest…not counting the two kids who I have not sorted out the ages of and have not even mentioned the names of (might as well do that now, Debbie the Muffin and Sunny the Betta fish) he’s just a few months old, a lil guy. The other youngest kids are Becky, Finn Jr, Pearl and Gabe

My fish tanks have the most eye-catching drama.

I have two tanks and a bowl, so sometimes I just look to see what's going on in the tanks. Not so long ago, I found out that their was a bully in the big tank.

(Just to make it clear, the big tank is the gang, the medium tank is the kingdom, and the bowl is the recovery / isolation tank.)

In the big tank, we had a (passive) betta (big bubbles), two Cory cats (stripped: crook, albino: añgel), two glow in the dark tetras (large purple: wanda [male], small green: cosmo [female]), and a singular minnow (small midnight blue: skippy, we had more but skippy went and massacred them in The name of being stronger so now he is the only little fish among the big guys).

In the medium tank we have another betta (king ambrose of the shelf kindom, who is dearly loved and adored by his followers) who likes to look in on the other tank to see what the gang was up to.

Finally, we have the recovery bowl / solitary confinement, which just has one plant and some gravel.

I was sitting at the big tank with my cousins when I noticed that Añgel was MISSING MOST OF HIS FINS, but somehow, HE COULD STILL SWIM FAST ENOUGH TO AVOID THE NET TO PUT HIM IN THE RECOVERY BOWL. At first, we thought it was crook because it might have been a case of territory, but it was never a problem before, so we scrapped that and kept a close eye just in case.

So for several weeks, I had kept an eye on the big tank looking for the basterd that chomped their fellow gang members' fins off but wasn't catching anyone in the act so everything kinda was swept away because almost every one was fine now.

For a while, Bubbles and his gang were fine, but one fine Saturday morning, we found him belly up, and I had to send him to heaven through the porcelain pipes. We suspect it was murder but no one in that tank could possibly have beaten a betta, and that brought up natural causes, so case closed on that one, but there is still a bully in the tank

It was a sad send-off, but the gang must go on! Until this morning, when I found skippy beat to hell and back with a chunk of his tail taken a bite out of! I had to take añgel out of the recovery tank and airlift skippy to the tank for either a peaceful send-off or a miracle save. The suspect? WANDA! I did not know that wanda was a male until I fully noticed the dots on his fins, and it made it easier to notice that cosmo was the female! So now I have to worry about wanda acting up and harassing cosmo because I can't switch skippy out just for Wanda to be taken to solitary! The gang is falling apart, and I can't stand to see Bubbles gang break like this.💔

Like, Cosmo was a gremlin and was a pain in the ass sometimes but I loved him, he was probably the most curious and maybe intelligent?? Of my fish. Idk- you could just tell he had wheels turning in his head. He loved staring at me intensely and it was very cute. Sometimes I would lay on the floor by his tank and he’d get down on the sand in the corner closest to me just to watch me watch him 😌

Flynn- I only had for a short time unfortunately, and he was very scared of me for a lot of it, so it was hard to get a read on him. He seemed very curious about his environment as well and loved to play in the bubbles from his filter.

Reaps was a great betta but would sometimes be hard to feed cuz he got distracted a lot. He loved his floating lotus flower that I got him and it was pretty much the cutest fucking thing on earth. He wasn’t super interactive but he was absolutely beautiful! Jet black with rainbow my iridescence on his scales. I loved him ;;

Andy was very sweet but had spine problems and very heavy fins due to being a doubletail, and this weird quirk where if he was super aggressive about food would launch himself at it and if he missed it too many times in a row he’d get pissed off and shoot down to the bottom of the tank and sulk????? It was kind of funny but also not, and really frustrating and I think he expended a lot of energy doing this and possibly caused himself injury on a few occasions. He loved watching me go about my human stuff at my desk though, and more than once I’d catch him looking over my shoulder at what I was doing 😌

Bugsy was a rescue from my old job because we had tried treating him for like a month for what we thought was a bacterial infection causing popeye, when he didn’t get better I advocated that he be returned to the floor because it was likely a birth defect and adopting him out was better than euthanasia. The first family to pick him up was clearly not interested in taking care of him like a pet and seemed to just want to get him to shut their kids up, like he was a toy they could give their toddler. They decided not to get him but that spooked me cuz I’d gotten so attached to him, being that I made a point to give him the extra care he needed while he was in treatment. I bought him because I wanted to give him a better life than being a throwaway toy for someone’s kid. He has always had that gross looking big eye, but he’s been the sweetest boy I’ve ever had- he doesn’t beg for food, but he comes up to see me every time I come over to the tank or open the lid. He’s been much healthier overall than Andy (Bugs is a doubletail too- even though I swore off ever getting a doubletail again) and much more alert and active and he’s always very patient with me while I’m feeding him (as long as I’m patient with him! Cuz he likes to chew each of his pellets for a few seconds before going for the next one 😂😭) Hes my sweet boy and I love him.

Laika on the other hand is the WORST BOY I’ve ever had (but it’s hilarious and I love him too) he launches out of the water at me every time I try to feed him (even one time biting my finger and actually hanging from it for a second!!!! I mean it doesn’t hurt but still 😂 chill the fuck out bud) and i have to point to his pellets aggressively or he’ll ignore them in his unending attempt to kick my ass to smithereens. -slaps the hood of my fish- this tiny boy can fit so much rage in him. He seems to be doing pretty well other than the occasional fin nipping and he’s probably the least genetically fucked up betta I’ve had. He’s really shown me how energetic and fuckin off the rails bettas can be when they aren’t weighted down my super heavy fins.
