Chapter 2: Building A Maintenance Routine

Let’s girl talk about how to build a maintenance routine, how to schedule, when to book appointments + understanding medical esthetic procedures.

How to Build a Routine:

Understand yourself and your beauty needs/desires. Do you want to start getting manicures? Are there any skin concerns you want to address + treat? Any enhancements you want? Are you ready to start keeping up with your hair? Once these questions are answered you can start building a routine!

Know what services can be done at a salon or at home.

Research for the best salons and spas near you

Take note of what you learn about yourself from your appointments so you know how to keep up at home. Ex.) Your skin type, curl pattern, hair porosity, ingredients that work best for you + your skin undertone.

List out what services you want done, how often you want them done and what you’re looking to achieve after each service.

Set beauty goals and plan to save for special beauty services.

Facials:

Basic facials should be done every 4-6 weeks.

When it comes to medical spa procedures they should be done at least once a month!

Here’s a short list of my favorite medical spa treatments to gain an understanding of what they are and how they benefit you.

Hydrafacial: a non invasive procedure that combines cleansing, exfoliation, extraction, hydration and antioxidant protection by removing dead skin cells and impurities while simultaneously delivering moisturizing serums into the skin. (Skin type: ALL) should be done every 4-6 weeks.

Chemical Peel: a solution applied to the face to remove dead skin cells and stimulate the growth of new cells. (Skin type: ALL. Darker skin complexions can experience post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation) should be done once a month.

Microdermabrasion: a minimally abrasive instrument is used to gently sand your skin in order to remove the thicker, uneven outer portion of skin. Best for light scarring, discoloration, sun damage and stretch marks. (Skin type: Skin prone to acne scars, age spots, unevenness, discoloration and sun damage.) should be done very 4-8 weeks.

PRP aka Vampire Facial: a procedure that involves drawing the clients blood, spinning it and injecting it through microneedling to increase collagen, reduce fine lines/wrinkles, improve moisture retention and enhance skin tone + texture. (Skin type: typically ACNE PRONE SKIN) should be done every few weeks and maintenance sessions are done 2-4 times a year.

Hair Removal

There are many types of hair removal procedures to invest your time and money into. Waxing, sugaring, threading, laser hair removal and electrolysis. It’s best to go in for a hair removal service when your hair is the size of a grain of rice.

Waxing: every 2-5 weeks. face, underarms and bikini can be done every 2-3 weeks. hair length should be 1/4 of an inch.

Sugaring: every 2 weeks. hair length should be at least 1/8 of an inch.

Threading: every 2-3 weeks.

Laser Hair Removal: every 4-6 weeks done in about 4-6 treatment sessions. maintenance treatments can be done once every 6-12 months.

Electrolysis: every 2-4 weeks done in about 8-12 treatments. can take any where from 8 months, 12 months and 2 years to complete the treatment.

Cosmetic Injections

Cosmetic injections tend to be a yearly treatment routine. I recommend investing in packages in order to get more treatment sessions for a certain amount of money. They can also include a free treatment. Packages can be used for medical esthetic procedures such as laser hair removal packages, body contouring packages and tattoo removal packages as well.

Participating in Botox parties are also a good way to get a discount and purchase Botox packages. I used to assist hosting botox parties which included champagne, mimosas, cute desserts and discounts for clients if they brought a friend!

Botox: once every 4 months.

Lip Filler: once every 12-18 months.

Chin Filler: once every 1-5 years.

Non Surgical Rhinoplasty: once every 6 months.

Nails

During the summer time is when I go into the nail salon more often than usual to keep my nails and toes ready for the sunshine.

Gel Manicure: every 3-4 weeks between fills.

Gel Pedicure: 2 weeks to 1 month.

Acrylic Nail Set: filled every 2-3 weeks. every 8 weeks to replace fake nails.

Hair

Your hair should be healthy and kept in good maintenance by using an effective salon routine.

Hair Color: every 4-6 weeks between each hair coloring session.

Haircut: every 6-8 weeks or every 3-4 months.

Extensions: glue and tape extensions every 4-8 weeks, sew-in extensions every 6-8 weeks and micro-link extensions every 2-3 months.

Wig Installations: every 1-6 weeks.

Other

Lash Extensions: every 2-3 weeks.

Lash Lift: every 6-8 weeks.

Lash Tinting: every 4-6 weeks.

Bow Tinting: every 4 weeks.

Brow Lamination: every 4-6 weeks.

Microblading: touch ups 1 or 2 times a year.

Appointment Layout:

Week 1: hydrafacial & extraction session.

Week 2: eyebrow wax & tint.

Week 3: hair cut & color.

Veilguard Spoilers Below, discussing Vallaslin and Ancient Elves, as well as a potential change I'd make to the game's story if I could.

So, the reveal that elves come from spirits that took physical form by taking Titan's blood was very cool but it got me thinking.

We know that spirits can have their nature corrupted and twisted against them to become demons - Justice becoming Vengeance, Wisdom becoming Pride, Determination becoming Spite - and it is pretty much outright stated that Solas himself had his nature changed from Wisdom to Pride by Mythal.

In the time of Elvhenan, the Evanuris would mark their slaves with vallaslin, including Mythal.

Blood magic is one of the few things that can bind demons. We see it with Spite and Lucanis in Veilguard and we see it with Solas' wisdom spirit friend in Inquisition.

Vallaslin translates to bloodwriting, which at first seems like just a fancy fantasy way to say tattoo, but in my mind that seems to indicate Actual Blood Magic.

The vallaslin aren't just cosmetic markings of ownership, they're actual physical blood bindings to allow the Evanuris to control their slaves and prevent them, even as the horrors of slavery twist their spirits into demons, from exercising any free will.

And when thousands of years later, Solas wakes up to find the Dalish wearing those same markings without understanding their history in blood magic, of course he's horrified.

How many years did he spend breaking those same bindings from his people, only to see a pale reflection of them wear them willingly as a cultural badge of honour?

In a worldstate where Solas removed the vallaslin from a romanced Inquisitor Lavellan, the gesture is not purely symbolic. It may very well have been preventative, in case anything like what happened in Veilguard happened and the Evanuris were set free.

Imagine a Thedas where dozens of Dalish suddenly found themselves bound to the service of corrupted Elgar'nan and Ghilan'nain, where even a Dalish Inquisitor themselves could very well be bound to them.

The Dalish don't just up and leave for promised 'Elven Glory' because they're suddenly all about revenge at any cost. They have no choice but to because of the blood magic hold over them.

I feel like this would have better tied into the themes Veilguard was trying to hammer home with Solas. Having small stakes Dalish villains to contrast with the true overwhelming power of Elgar'nan and Ghilan'nain (like Samson or Alexius were to Corypheus), who could be redeemed and freed from their bindings would have strengthened the idea that Solas himself was worthy of such a redemption.

It would have shown Rook, at least one who tried to redeem others, that it was possible and have an actual reason to do so for Solas other than "he feels really bad about it :("

What’s ya think about V’s lack of cosmetic mods?

V’s in a world full of interesting cosmetics, between freaky maelstrom eyes, fully gold skin, arms covered in spikes

And in all of this, is V, where largely the only visual mods they have are their arms, or maybe some small ones on the face

For our nomads, it can make sense to start out without any crazy visual mods; of course people in the city would dress (or mod themselves) different

But it seems odd that V never gets the option to fit in with the people on the street

I thought so, too, but those cases of extreme customization seem to be few and far between. Look at the examples you gave,

Freaky maelstrom eyes—a gang that possibly required mandatory cyber modification. No wonder their members are encouraged down that path.

Fully gold skin—which is only found in customer service, especially during high-end places. Workers there are fully plated in gold, possibly as a way to dehumanise them and make the rich feel more pandered to.

Arms covered in spikes—I haven't seen that example yet, but I assume it belongs to another extreme group?

V fits in very much with the people on the street; those customizations aren't found in your average npcs roaming the lands (ignore the pictures' subject, I was trying to showcase their cool umbrellas for a future post)

The more unique npcs with important relevance to the plot seem to look like your average human as well, give or take a few cyberware lines.

Viktor, Meredith Jackie, Panam, Johnny, Mama Welles, and Misty all have natural hair colours and eyes. Judy and Evelyn have coloured hair, but nothing more past that.

it's the intricate, fully-coloured tattoos V is missing out on. Judy is covered in them, even Jackie and Viktor have them, yet the options offered to V are mild at best.

Interesting fashion as well, as cool as V's current wardrobe is, it lacks in comparison to the street npc fashion, let alone the fashion of important npcs (I NEED panam's outfit omfg)

And accessories. V lacks very much in accessories, which makes them feel bare in comparison to the average person. Even the simple bullet necklace showing up in cutscenes would've made a major difference. Even Johnny has a dogtag necklace.

At the end of the day, V fits with both street npcs and important npcs. The average nightcity citizen isn't a fashion icon, more on the plain joe side, usually natural coloured hair, some subtle cyberware lines, and a simple tattoo if they're feeling adventurous.

But fuck fitting in man! I wanted to have an all-gold skin!

Is V the protagonist or not?

Like I get it for immersion, but let us make that choice for ourselves, at least. The player should get to decide if they want an npc-looking V or one with flaming wings and diamond skin.

I'd rather see a customization option that I hate than see an option I feel "meh" about. I rather V customization has options that make me go "wtf calm down edgelord" than boring mild ones that I'll mindlessly scroll by.

Be specific. You'll hit bullseye with a certain audience. You can't appease everyone, so you might as well focus on one group or two?

For the sake of not just shitting on things and complaining endlessly about other people's hard work, I'll mention the things I adore about V customization.

The eyes! Oh, the eyes are the most creative I have seen in a game full stop. Those double pupils one made me stop in awe, seeing them completely reset my brain preference, and I went to make a punk looking V instead of the plain one I was aiming for. Even if I didn't end up picking those eyes, I didn't stray from the path of punk V afterwards. Are we playing cyberPUNK or not?

The nails! It's such a nice little detail that brings me so much joy. How clever it is for the devs of a fps game to remember that the protagonist's hands are the part you'll be seeing the most of, outside of cutscenes. So not only you get the choice to decide their nail length, but also completely change the colour?

And those weren't mere colours, no, there were fully intricate designs there, a lot of them had logos of corporations and brands which fit amazingly in this dystopia corpo world. Some were metalic, others were matt, I was overjoyed. I changed V's nails on the regular ingame. I notice them whenever I reload the gun.

The hair options were nice, but there is room for improvement. In my opinion, anything that has to do with colour in character making should have side options for a hue, saturation, and brighteness sliders. The colour combinations ingame are absolutely beautiful, I love how vivid a lot of them are. But they're lacking in quantity, and adding every colour under the sun will just be tedious.

Give us the slider, then add multie haircolour options and give those their own slider, then you're done! They already implemented colour sliders for the cars ingame, it can't be that tricky to add it to hair?

The piercings were also... meh. Plain? Boring. All of them were alternative versions of the same piercing set, minus one item removed. I mean we could've had glowing neon piercings, cosmetic wires that go through your eyes, a glowing tongue! Come on.

The best tattoo system I've seen in a videogame is the DA:V one, where it gives you a matching full-body tattoo based on a theme, and you can decide to hide certian parts of it. So you can end up with any combination of tattoo placements you want. But I also hated how all the tattoo options were vague abstractions at best, general and broad to fit as many people's tastes as possible, only in black and white and never fully coloured.

Lack of bodytype, like why is fem V so scrawny and lithe when I have 10 body points? Give her some muscles she's a merc. Or better yet, give the player the choice to decide. Like DA:V again! We see fat npcs all the time, even Jackie was on the fuller side, so why can't V?

The hair has been a disappointment as well. I love the one I picked, but the other options were... yeah. Especially the lack of curly hair, do we really need the same straight haircut in varying lengths?

Thankfully there are mods to fix all of the above complaints, but it's also sleezy of a whole videogame dev team to leave it to modders and NOT integrate native mod support into the game. No I don't just mean the "play with mods" option at the launcher, I mean a whole mods menu you can scroll and download mods directly from ingame. Like BG3 and DO2. Hell, even allowing a steam workshop would've made a difference.

so I said I was gonna make a post about discrimination against supernaturals in the Shifter!verse, and I've only gotten the shapeshifter section done so far but I need something nice to happen today, so I'm posting the shapeshifter bit. I'll make a more consolidated post once I've got the whole rant down

In general, shapeshifters have the hardest time ‘fitting in’ with mundane humans. This is mostly due to the fact that most shapeshifters have a physical ‘quirk’ thanks to their animal form that makes them easy to pick out of a crowd. The most common quirks tend to affect facial features such as the eyes, ears, teeth, and skin. Rarer quirks affect hair and nails. Because of this, it’s not unusual for mundane human with certain visual differences like heterochromia, vitiligo, hirsutism, or onychogryphosis (a condition that causes extremely thick and long nail growth) to be mistaken for shapeshifters. Historically, any person showing these ‘hallmark signs of a shapechanger’ would be treated with suspicion and hostility, regardless of if they were proven to be a shapeshifter or not. In the United States, it was legal to refuse services, jobs, and even healthcare services to a shifter - or even a suspected one - until the 1950’s. Most shifters made an effort to hide their quirks and live as ‘human’ as possible, while some chose to forgo mundane society entirely and form communities and towns away from the major population centers.

While society’s opinion has changed greatly since the 20th century, shapeshifters are still treated with suspicion and fear by many. The prevailing thought is that shapeshifters are deceitful by nature owing to their ability to change forms. Depending on the species of the shifter, they can be seen as dangerous, unpredictable, sneaky, stupid, or lazy as well. Werewolves get the worst of it, often portrayed as bloodthirsty and uncontrollable - something both lessened and worsened by the long and storied history of werewolves serving in the US army. To continue to avoid on-sight discrimination, many shifters opt for small cosmetic surgeries to get rid of quirks such as pointed ears and animal-like teeth, or for easy cover-up options like contact lenses, make-up, and tattoos.

It’s required by law for shapeshifters to identify themselves as such. A shifter’s identification is required to identify them as such and list the basic identifying features of their animal form. Birth certificates do not, since it’s impossible to tell a shifter is a shifter before they come into their abilities around puberty age. But passports, driver’s licenses, and other identification methods must accurately reflect a shifter’s status and animal form. Ostensibly, it’s illegal for employers, banks, and landlords to discriminate based on supernatural status, but many places still refuse to deal with shifters. A handful of famous shifters in recent years have been slowly changing public perception, but there’s still a long way to go before they are fully accepted into mundane society.

For shapeshifters that chose to turn their backs on society, it's both easier and more difficult to exist. One one hand, they don't have to deal with the constant worry of what the mundanes around them might do. On the other, they tend to live in isolated and insular communities with little access to education and luxuries most mundanes take for granted. When discovered, these shapeshifter communities are usually treated with fear - occasionally to such a degree that they are attacked. This is in part due to the fact that in the US, only 1 in 20 people will be a shifter on average, with some places in the US having such low shifter populations as to make them almost nonexistent. With such little exposure to shifters in their daily lives, most mundanes are left with myths, sensationalist news stories, and Hollywood lies with which to understand their shapeshifter neighbors.

Truly, when I saw Weapons & Equipment (2022) announced, my eyes rolled. Of all the things I want from RQ, an equipment book is not high on the list. In fact, an equipment book feels like a remnant from an earlier age. Like dinosaurs, you just don’t see them around too often.

Well, as usual, I’m an idiot who should have a little more faith. This book, like the many catalog style books I have enjoyed (Chromebook, Street Samurai Catalog, Aurora’s Whole Realms Catalog), has dual functionality. Yes, there is equipment detailed. But in doing that detailing, the reader gets a peak into the world the equipment exists within. This affords us a point of view of Glorantha we don’t generally get — we get the mythic and the heroic and the spiritual across many products, but the mundane? It is easy to forget that there IS a mundane side to Glorantha.

So yes, weapons and armor. But also trade goods. Cosmetics. Services like tattooing and (lol) funerals. Toys! There is discussion of metals (they aren’t like our metals) but also of pottery and weaving. Many means of travel are laid out, as are schemes for travel and property ownership — who doesn’t want a house?

All of this adds another layer of reality with which players can interface with Glorantha and it is the one the grounds all the others! This book makes Glorantha make sense in a brand new way. Turns out you CAN teach an old campaign setting new tricks!
