In the bustling city of Vancouver, where innovation meets natural beauty, the design and functionality of office spaces play a crucial role in fostering productivity, employee satisfaction, and business success. Office fit outs, a term encompassing the design, construction, and furnishing of office interiors, are essential for creating environments that reflect corporate culture, accommodate evolving business needs, and promote collaboration. As companies in Vancouver strive to attract talent and optimize operations, investing in well-executed office fit outs has become increasingly significant.
Tumblr media
Tailoring Spaces to Corporate Identity
Office fit outs in Vancouver are more than just interior decoration; they are strategic endeavors that align physical spaces with corporate identity and values. Whether it's a tech startup aiming for a modern and dynamic workspace or a law firm seeking a sophisticated and professional ambiance, the design elements, color schemes, and furniture choices in a fit out contribute to creating a cohesive brand image. By reflecting the company's ethos and culture through design, employees feel connected to their workplace and are more motivated to contribute positively.
Optimizing Space Utilization
Vancouver's real estate market often demands efficient use of space, making effective office fit outs essential for maximizing square footage. Thoughtful space planning and layout design can enhance workflow efficiency, facilitate communication between departments, and create versatile areas for meetings, brainstorming sessions, and individual work. This optimization not only improves operational efficiency but also supports scalability, allowing businesses to adapt to growth and organizational changes without major disruptions. Hop over here.
Promoting Collaboration and Innovation
Modern office fit outs emphasize open-plan layouts and flexible workspaces that encourage collaboration and innovation. By incorporating breakout areas, communal zones, and creative hubs, companies in Vancouver can foster a culture of teamwork and idea sharing among employees. Collaborative spaces equipped with technology and ergonomic furniture facilitate spontaneous interactions and brainstorming sessions, driving creativity and problem-solving.
Enhancing Employee Well-being
Employee well-being is a priority in Vancouver's competitive job market, where companies vie to attract and retain top talent. Well-designed office fit outs prioritize ergonomics, natural light, ventilation, and acoustic comfort to create a supportive and healthy work environment. Features such as adjustable desks, ergonomic chairs, biophilic design elements, and noise-reducing materials contribute to reducing stress, enhancing productivity, and promoting overall well-being among employees.
Integration of Technology
In the tech-savvy landscape of Vancouver, integrating cutting-edge technology into office fit outs is crucial for staying competitive and facilitating seamless operations. Smart office solutions, including IoT (Internet of Things) devices, digital signage, video conferencing systems, and integrated IT infrastructure, enable efficient communication and connectivity. These technologies not only streamline daily tasks but also support remote work capabilities, enhancing flexibility and productivity across teams.
Sustainability and Environmental Responsibility
Vancouver is renowned for its commitment to sustainability and environmental stewardship. Office fit outs that prioritize green building practices, energy-efficient lighting, recycled materials, and indoor air quality management contribute to reducing carbon footprints and promoting eco-friendly workplaces. Green certifications such as LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) validate a company's commitment to environmental responsibility, appealing to environmentally conscious employees and clients alike. Cost-Effectiveness and Long-Term Investment

The Senate of Canada Building in Ottawa Award News
Diamond Schmitt in joint venture with KWC Architects has won a 2021 International Architecture Award¼ for its design of the Senate of Canada Building in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. The award will be presented on Friday, September 10 by The Chicago Athenaeum: Museum of Architecture and Design and The European Centre for Architecture Art Design and Urban Studies, at an awards ceremony near the Acropolis in Athens, Greece. On the same day, the presenting partners will open a special exhibition, “The City and the World,” at The Contemporary Space Athens. Diamond Schmitt’s winning project will be featured in this exhibition.
The Senate of Canada Building received top honours in the Government Buildings category. It was among 130 projects chosen for the 2021 International Architecture Awards from the final shortlist of 450 projects presented to an international jury composed of distinguished architects, designers, critics and educators. Diamond Schmitt transformed one of Ottawa’s most important cultural and historic landmarks, the former Union train station, into a home for the Senate of Canada.
photo : doublespace photography, courtesy Diamond Schmitt Architects
The project, completed in 2019, presented a challenging set of opportunities: restore the historic Beaux Arts train station; upgrade the facility into a modern, secure 21st-century building and give voice to a narrative of Canadian culture and identity through craft. In realizing these opportunities, the project embraces innovative and inclusive/collaborative approaches to craftsmanship and fabrication, invokes a contemporary approach to new interventions, and both complements and juxtaposes the character-defining elements of the original building.

The architectural precedents included the Gothic language of the existing Parliament Buildings and the Beaux-Arts Classicism of the existing train station. In reconciling all these factors new approaches to techniques, technologies, fabrication, craft, procurement and implementation were employed in realizing the final result. These innovations stretched from the deployment for the first time in North America of new technologies to save and consolidate the extraordinary plaster ceilings of the General Waiting Room and Concourse to the introduction of thin Kevlar bands to provide structural reinforcement to existing steel beams.
“We are thrilled that our design of the Senate of Canada Building has received an International Architecture Award from the European Centre and The Chicago Atheneum. It’s especially wonderful when Canadian excellence is recognized globally by our peers,” says Don Schmitt, Principal at Diamond Schmitt.

Diamond Schmitt/KWC honoured with Civic Trust Award
The award recognizes projects that make an outstanding contribution to the quality and appearance of the built environment. “Award level schemes demonstrate excellence in architecture or design, whilst being sustainable, accessible and provide a positive civic contribution,” the program said in a statement. The Senate is one of only two projects from North America to win the award.
The Senate of Canada Building opened in 2019 as the interim home to the upper house of Parliament while Centre Block is refurbished. Ottawa’s landmark Beaux-Arts central train station (1912) has been restored, renewed and reimagined to accommodate the Senate with a modern architectural language that both complements and contrasts the celebrated features of the original building.
“A bold re-use of an old building which recognises the gravitas of the original can be repurposed for social and environmental benefit, with a strong identity and a real architectural clarity,” remarked the judges in their comments.
photo : Tom Arban Photography
“The historic fabric is refurbished and revealed and stands in comfortable juxtaposition with modern interventions. A breath-taking restoration project with highly refined new build intervention which knits into the existing architecture with serious skill,” they added.
Formerly the Government Conference Centre, the building required a complete overhaul of major building systems as well as compliance with seismic codes, accessibility, and life safety upgrades. Two committee rooms have been inserted into the monumental and finely detailed General Waiting Room while the Concourse now houses the Senate chamber. Offices and public space are added to a building that had largely been off limits to the public for 50 years.

“This project provided a remarkable opportunity to investigate and engage in a range of design innovations to introduce a new program in a historic building and to and convey Canadian identity through contemporary interpretations of landscape and iconography,” said Martin Davidson, principal, Diamond Schmitt Architects.
Diamond Schmitt Architects (www.dsai.ca) has an extensive portfolio of academic facilities, commercial and residential projects as well as recreation and performing arts centres. Current projects include the re-imagination of David Geffen Hall at Lincoln Center in New York and Ottawa’s new central library and Library and Archives Canada joint facility.

The Senate of Canada Building Opens
February 28, 2019, Toronto – A historic landmark in Ottawa has opened in a new role as interim home to Canada’s upper house of Parliament.
The Senate of Canada Building beautifully restores and transforms the Beaux-Arts central train station (1912) with an architecture and craftsmanship that both complements and contrasts the celebrated features of the original building.

The design by Diamond Schmitt Architects and KWC Architects introduces a contemporary language of interventions and insertions within the monumental and finely detailed General Waiting Room and Concourse. The program also adds committee and meeting rooms, offices and public space to a building that has largely been off limits to the public for 50 years.
“This project provided a remarkable opportunity to investigate and engage in a range of design innovations to introduce a new program in a heritage building, to represent and raise the profile of the Senate’s role in Parliament, and to convey Canadian identity through contemporary interpretations of national symbols and iconography,” said Martin Davidson, principal, Diamond Schmitt Architects.
Working with the Dominion Sculptor of Canada and further employing digital technologies, a dialogue between traditional craft and contemporary fabrication techniques emerges to inform material selection and the design of myriad details.

The leaf pattern of ten native maple trees are hand-carved, scanned, then CNC-carved and appear in the wooden doors to committee rooms and the Senate Chamber. Perforated bronze panels frame committee rooms with large-scale photographic images of landscapes rendered as half-tone images. The most detailed design elements find expression in the Senate Chamber, the former station Concourse.
The building, which became the Government Conference Centre in 1973, required a complete overhaul of major building systems as well as compliance with seismic codes, accessibility, and life safety upgrades.
On the exterior, the long neglected blank east facade is now reimagined as a modern interpretation of the building’s stone-columned, Beaux-Arts facade.

The Senate will occupy the building for ten years during restoration of Centre Block on Parliament Hill, after which the building is designed to accommodate conference and office use. This transformation secures the future of a legendary building in the heart of the nation’s capital.
Diamond Schmitt Architects (www.dsai.ca) has offices in Toronto, Vancouver and New York City. The firm’s extensive portfolio includes performing arts centres, post-secondary facilities, and residential, institutional and commercial buildings.
Current projects include Ottawa’s new central library and Library and Archives Canada joint facility; Robarts Common at the University of Toronto, and Buddy Holly Hall of Performing Arts & Sciences in Texas.

Reclaimed Materials Add More Than Just Decorative Value
Tumblr media
Reclaimed materials are a hot interior design trend. They are used in everything from rustic dining room tables and wooden headboards to vintage stained glass windows, but rescued materials have a bigger story to tell. The fabric of old homes is actually being reused to meet environmental and sustainability goals. Instead of demolishing old buildings, their parts are being deconstructed, reused, and recycled. Read on to discover how advancing to a circular economy through green building practices will help spur local economies.
Mitigates climate change
Tumblr media
Though our primary focus has been tackling the pandemic, the impending threat of climate change still looms in the background. Reclaimed wood specifically is a renewable resource, as it reduces the number of new trees harvested and cut down. According to studies out of Metro Vancouver, it is estimated that “deconstruction can keep at least 80% of building material waste out of landfills.[i]”
Not every material can be reused, but the process of deconstruction allows parts to be easily sorted and recycled. It may surprise you to know just how much building material can be reused or recycled. Appliances, moldings, electrical equipment, countertops, bricks, glass, and light fixtures are just a couple on a long list of reusable items. Things like carpet, drywall, and plastic pipe cannot be reused, but they can be recycled. By using reclaimed items in your home, you can personally take a step to save the world's resources!
Increases affordable housing
Tumblr media
Rapid population growth has created an affordable housing crisis in many major cities. The costs of supplies and building materials are just some of the things that drive up the price of new homes. A low-income individual should not have to settle for a home of inferior quality. Using cheap materials to drive down construction costs creates safety, maintenance, and resale risks. Natural disasters are happening more frequently, and homes have to be built to withstand high winds and flooding.
Reusable materials dramatically reduce the costs of new homes, while also providing durable products. Some programs allow residents and community members to construct parts of homes themselves, while given technical assistance. Initiatives like these help to develop community pride and camaraderie, while also solving challenges caused by inequality.
Financially benefits communities
Tumblr media
Deconstructing a home takes much more time and effort than demolishing one. This may seem like a negative factor until you consider the new jobs that will be created for this specific task. Deconstructors will have to know how to disassemble a home, identify parts, and sort materials. The ability to be specially trained in deconstruction will help displaced laborers readily find new jobs in this tough economy. According to the Congressional Budget Office, the reclaimed materials industry is expected to grow faster than the U.S. economy overall in the next 10 years[ii].
The materials from demolished homes go straight to the landfill, but when a home is deconstructed, the parts can be sold on-site to local businesses, manufacturers, and property owners. This process keeps money in the community and combats the financial and environmental costs of transportation.
Finally, homes with sustainable materials are often able to reap tax incentives and have a higher resale value. According to a recent study, homes with a sustainability certification sold, on average, for eight percent more than non-certified homes[iii].
Provides honest connections
Tumblr media
Reclaimed materials have taken the home goods marketplace by storm. Interior designers and television influencers continuously use recycled wood and glass on home makeover shows, and everywhere from large-scale retailers to small boutiques carries reclaimed decor products. Buyers love owning something fashionable, but even more so, they love possessing something with a past life that carries a story. Reclaimed wood also has a reputation for being more durable depending on its age. Long ago, trees were allowed to grow untouched for centuries. The wood that was harvested for homes was older and therefore tougher than the wood from young trees that we harvest today.
Using reclaimed materials also provides a feel-good moment. Many homeowners report emotions of sadness and disappointment when their homes are demolished and the materials are thrown away. Demolishing homes also releases lead dust and pollutants in the air, which negatively impacts surrounding neighbors. Homeowners can experience less guilt by reducing their carbon footprint through the reuse of their old materials.
How can we help?
SJR Research is a historical consulting firm that offers a diverse set of services benefiting corporations, homeowners, and communities. Our knowledge will guide you, whether you are involved in a deconstruction project or on the receiving end of reclaimed materials. Would you like to know the backstory of your reclaimed wood floors? She also stated that whilst her movement has been limited by the arrest “my inner self has hardly ever felt so colourful and broad,” in a clearly show of defiance to US authorities. Meng is below regular surveillance and is donning a GPS monitoring unit, which she is funding.

Meng and Huawei have consistently denied any wrongdoing, and on Wednesday a spokesman for Meng stated that “political factors” motivated her arrest.
Although formal extradition hearings are established to get started in January 2020, Meng’s legal professionals on Wednesday argued for a stay on extradition proceedings dependent on opinions designed by President Donald Trump, who informed Reuters in December that he could “certainly intervene” in Meng’s scenario if he thought it would support the US-China trade war.

Thank you, my closest partners.
Despite remaining bodily limited to a really restricted house in the course of my time in Vancouver, my interior self has by no means felt so vibrant and extensive.
I have in no way ahead of had the option to connect so carefully with the 188,000 Huawei personnel. Every little thing has a fantastic facet, and this type of shut link is as warm as a spring breeze.
Each individual time a court listening to has concluded, I have viewed Huawei staff members keeping up all evening just to abide by my case in distant time zones. This has brought me to tears. Over the past couple months, so many people today at Huawei, which include people I really don’t know, have shown concern for my safety and remaining me messages on the Xinsheng Local community [Huawei’s internal online forum]. They have frequently been sending me their ideal needs and cheering me up with their messages. Just about every time I observed these messages, an indescribable emotion would arise from the base of my heart. I have even noticed former workforce, who are now settled in Vancouver, line up early in the early morning at the courtroom ahead of just about every hearing to assist me in any way they can.
Your issue has warmed my heart and your assist has filled me with ability. I imagine that each time I just take a stage forward, there are 188,000 Huawei workforce having that phase with me. So no make a difference what challenges or pressures I encounter, I will usually keep on being identified from the bottom of my heart.
I think it is this electrical power that joins our palms together and can make Huawei’s will as potent as a fortress. Thank you all.
Thank you for your assist and concern. Let’s function together to force ahead!

Medical doctors know very well that there are explicit challenges and stresses distinctive to the enterprise of maintaining people healthy. The people of this village are very poor, and each month Susan asks the Newcomers Club to donate totally different items, from pots and pans, to blankets, toys, faculty provides and rather more. Much of the arrogance and urgency that fueled the market is gone, leading to inconsistent sales. It's uncommon that a week goes by with no foreboding headline about an imminent housing market crash making the rounds in Canada. Many information retailers reported on the story with the headline "Home Ownership Received More Reasonably priced at finish of 2008", however that was extremely misleading when you did not read the report. Sure, it’s Bag Week, the place we rejoice all one of the best luggage of the yr right here at TechCrunch. And there may be little extra satisfying than discovering a primary black one which’s purposeful, trendy and distinctive. Fortunately, Canadian city athletic attire maker RYU makes three such luggage, and whereas every one has its personal explicit attraction relying on what you’re in search of in a backpack, they’re additionally all winners that elevate the essential black backpack to new heights.
Fast Pack Lux 18L ($185)
RYU’s “excellent” providing for me is the Fast Pack Lux 18L capability bag that’s just about good as a general-use day pack when it comes to cargo area, and that may additionally serve properly for a one or two-night journey, relying on how frivolously you pack.
The RYU’s signature function, and what makes it my favourite day pack when it comes to on a regular basis use across the metropolis, is its profile — a silhouette that’s made all the higher as a result of RYU makes use of an inner molded shell to make sure that it by no means flattens down or loses its form, no matter how full or empty the bag truly is. That is truly an enormous promoting level for me, and one which makes the RYU Fast Pack Lux 18L nearly sure to turn into my go-to each day bag. Inside, there are just a few pockets, together with a laptop computer sleeve that may match as much as a 15-inch MacBook Professional — one other rarity in a day pack this low-profile.
Along with the built-in body, the Fast Pack Lux is kitted out with premium supplies, just like the leather-based accent patch on the highest flap, leather-based shoulder straps, an outer layer of poly-cotton mix that covers a wax-treated canvas and nylon inside for water resistance and sturdiness. The supplies undoubtedly really feel premium, although the outermost layer resembles form of a yoga pant materials, and in my home undoubtedly attracts and picks up my canine’s simply shed white hairs with reckless abandon. I’m very happy to get out the lint curler as soon as and some time as a trade-off for simply how good trying the bag is, nevertheless.
It wears barely lengthy, however tight to the again (for reference when sizing up the images above, I’m 6’2″ and fairly a little bit of that’s torso). The detachable chest strap helps retains the profile fairly seamless, and there’s a deal with on prime for simple carrying when not on the again.
One other distinctive function of the Fast Pack Lux is that it opens from the entrance, with the flap on the prime unbuckling to disclose two zippers that run the size of the bag. Undo these, and also you get principally a duffel-style cargo loading technique, which is nice for arranging your stuff with out having to layer or dig down as you’ll in a top-loading pack.
Locker Pack Lux 24L ($215)
The Locker Pack Lux 24L is the extra spacious model of the Fast Pack Lux, with 6L additional quantity for packing your gear. It’s designed extra for these overnights or two-day journeys, and but it doesn’t actually add that a lot in the best way of bulk should you’re in search of one thing that may serve flexibly as each day pack and weekender.
The Locker Pack Lux has the identical supplies mixture because the Fast Pack, however is a bit longer and so might be higher fitted to taller individuals. It nonetheless gives a really slim profile, and has the identical inner structural elements, which suggests it’ll maintain its form, however it has a bit extra leeway for growth, too, letting you pack in a shocking quantity of stuff by way of the front-loading, double zipper stowage and packing flap.
In contrast to the Fast Pack Lux, you additionally get exterior entry to the laptop computer compartment within the Locker Pack, which provides you a straightforward approach to get at as much as a 15-inch pocket book. The leather-accented prime flap closes down over this compartment, too, to provide you some safety towards the weather within the case of sunshine showers (RYU additionally sells a devoted rain hood individually).
Specific Pack 15L ($90)
The Specific Pack is the smallest of those RYU backpacks when it comes to packing quantity, however it’s additionally most likely the best choice with regards to an all-around metropolis day pack that may suit you no matter top and body. The extraordinarily minimal aesthetic is nice for town, particularly with the polyurethane outer coating that wraps a center canvas layer for the bag’s physique.
This can be a very light-weight bag, however the inner pocket can truly match numerous stuff when wanted, and there’s a single woven pocket on one aspect of the outside for stowing a water bottle. This provides an asymmetrical look, which can also be fairly cool trying. Inside, there’s a zippered mesh block and a totally zippered entrance pocket for separating your sweaty fitness center gear, plus a laptop computer compartment that may match a full, 15-inch MacBook Professional with out situation.
The bag is snug to put on, however doesn’t have the interior construction of the opposite two, so if it’s empty it’ll hug rather a lot nearer to the physique. If there’s one factor I’d change about it, it’s the RYU branding — however it does truly recede to being barely seen in much less direct lighting, and is extra refined total than it appears right here.
Total, RYU’s bag lineup is spectacular, and gives one thing for everybody. The Vancouver-based firm has carried out an ideal job of delivering extremely purposeful designs that additionally supply nice type with just about common attraction. The corporate additionally gives non-Lux variations of each the Fast Pack and the Locker Pack, which drop the leather-based accents and embedded waxed canvas, however which additionally supply some respectable reductions if the costs above strike you as too excessive.
RYU’s line of backpacks offer style and function for exploring the city or weekends away Sure, it’s Bag Week, the place we rejoice all one of the best luggage of the yr right here at TechCrunch.

New State-of-the-Art Performing Arts Venue in the Heart of Cultural District Creates Permanent Home for the Lubbock Symphony Orchestra, Ballet Lubbock, and Touring Productions
Lubbock, TX, February 23, 2021 — The Buddy Holly Hall of Performing Arts and Sciences, a new state-of-the-art performance venue in Lubbock, Texas, recently inaugurated its landmark building with a series of socially-distanced, limited capacity performances. Designed by Diamond Schmitt in association with Parkhill and MWM Architects of Lubbock, built by Lee Lewis Construction, and developed by Garfield Public/Private LLC, The Buddy Holly Hall is now open to patrons and will formally celebrate its opening this summer. It is West Texas’ largest dedicated performance venue–bringing the city’s vibrant performing arts community including the Lubbock Symphony Orchestra, Ballet Lubbock, and the Lubbock Independent School District, along with a variety of professional touring productions, under one roof.
The new 218,000-square-foot Hall, which was developed to serve the community’s needs, anchors Lubbock’s Art and Culture District and holds a multitude of performances and programs in the grand 2,297-seat Helen DeVitt Jones Theater, the more intimate 415-person Crickets Theater, and other flexible spaces for rehearsal and performance, as well as a restaurant, two multi-purpose rooms and an outdoor covered amphitheater.
“We are thrilled to finally begin welcoming audiences into The Buddy Holly Hall and to give the people of Lubbock and the region the state-of-the-art facilities our incredible performers deserve,” said Tim Collins, Chairman of the Board of the Lubbock Entertainment and Performing Arts Association which founded and operates the Hall. “Diamond Schmitt deeply understood our community’s dream to create a performing arts campus that promotes entertainment for our region, while also serving as an arts education hub and a cornerstone for downtown revitalization. The result is a beautiful, world-class space unlike anything in our area that will bring our community together and create a new destination for the arts in Lubbock. We can’t wait to celebrate this momentous occasion with a grand opening this summer, when it’s safer for everyone to gather together in person.”
Diamond Schmitt’s sophisticated design of the $158 million Hall was selected in 2014 following a competitive process. Their modern design is inspired by the colors and shapes of the landscape of West Texas, including the prismatic and layered rock formations of Texas canyons. The layout of the interior spaces will accommodate the Hall’s wide-ranging performance line-up–from hosting ballet, symphony, school, opera, pop and country performances to Broadway productions to statewide band and choir competitions. Targeting LEED Silver, the building’s façades meticulously balance various approaches to creating shade to counter the South Plains Region of Texas’ extreme temperature fluctuations. A long overhang, angled concrete fins, and deep-set ribbon windows all act as architectural drapery to cool the building and filter light without obstructing the views of the wide vistas surrounding the Hall.
Dissolving the threshold between indoors and outdoors, the Hall’s use of glass at ground-level entrances creates an inviting and seamless transition for visitors entering and exiting the Hall. Inside, the building moves from spacious public lobbies to more liminal spaces leading to several intimate studios and The Buddy Holly Hall’s two signature theaters, which were designed, in collaboration with partners Jaffe Holden Acoustics and Schuler Shook Theatre Planners, to ensure premier acoustics and optimal theater capabilities no matter the type of performance or sound level. Both theaters achieve pure and crystalline sound on par with the world’s leading performance halls through extensive acoustic modeling and precisely placed acoustical banners which enhance the clarity, consistency, and constancy of tone in the halls. Additionally, the seating in the Helen DeVitt Jones Theater can be reconfigured to accommodate the hall’s vast range of programming. The orchestra seating section can be set for traditional raked fixed-chair seating or for popular flat-floor general admission.
“Just as the idea for The Buddy Holly Hall grew from the Lubbock community, our modern design for the building is inspired by the region’s physical and cultural landscape,” said Matthew Lella, Principal at Diamond Schmitt. “We designed a building that is both open and outward looking and yet simultaneously invites the public to engage with all the activity happening inside. Responding to the unique challenges of the site–from the intense Texas heat to its location in a flood plain–we have created a signature new space for the performing arts with world-class facilities that embody the spirit of the performers who will be gracing its stages.”
The Hall is named for Lubbock native Buddy Holly, who sparked a cultural revolution in the 1950s with his music, songwriting, and big framed glasses. A signature feature of the Hall’s Christine DeVitt Main Lobby is its iconic guitar wall depicting Holly playing a Stratocaster. Designed by Texas artist Brad Oldham, the site-specific sculpture weaves together 9,000 aluminum brushed bronze guitar picks in an array of sizes to create an image of the Hall’s namesake.
The Buddy Holly Hall is privately funded, owned, and operated by the Lubbock Entertainment and Performing Arts Association (LEPAA), with 100% of all contributions directly funding construction of the project. Its initial feasibility study was conducted by Webb Management. Ongoing operations and event management will be facilitated through ASM Global. Innovative partnerships with local arts organizations, public schools and universities, and private corporations will allow The Buddy Holly Hall to be financially self-sustaining upon opening.

GROUND BREAK FOR BUDDY HOLLY HALL OF PERFORMING ARTS & SCIENCES
Toronto – The Buddy Holly Hall of Performing Arts and Sciences broke ground today in Lubbock, Texas, setting a milestone for this major arts project in the hometown of the iconic 1950s pop legend Buddy Holly.

The center features the 2,200-seat Helen DeVitt Jones Theater; a 425-seat studio theater; a grand hall; a bistro; and the 22,000-square-foot home to Ballet Lubbock with five dance studios. The Christine DeVitt Lobby will be a gathering point and community asset.
“The aim for Lubbock is to create a performing arts centre as good acoustically, as welcoming to the public, and as attractive to performers to be among the best halls in North America,” said Jack Diamond, Principal, with Toronto-based Diamond Schmitt Architects.
The Lubbock Entertainment and Performing Arts Association (LEPAA) is developing the privately funded, $155-million project, which will also provide access to the Lubbock Independent School District as a learning centre. “Buddy Holly Hall will be a beacon for progress and downtown revitalization for Lubbock and the South Plains,” said Tim Collins, LEPAA’s chairman. “The venue is a hub that brings together people of all ages to experience world-class art in a world-class facility.”
The multi-purpose nature of the venue will allow for a wide range of activity, from opera, Broadway shows and symphonic music, to rock concerts, conferences and social events. “To achieve this versatility, the floor of the auditorium can have raked seating or be flat for a standing audience, either below or in line with the stage,” said Matthew Lella, Principal, Diamond Schmitt.
The central volume of the structure conceals the fly tower and is framed by a roofline of swooping planes with cascading columns that establish a strong visual identity and create a welcoming entrance. A replica of a 200-foot telecommunications tower will be installed on the site as a light sculpture, forming a beacon for the performing arts center.
Diamond Schmitt is working with development team partners GarïŹeld Public/Private, LLC, Parkhill, Smith, & Cooper, MWM Architects, Hugo Reed & Associates, Jaffe Holden Acoustics, Schuler Shook, and Lee Lewis Construction. The 218,000-square-foot performing arts campus is on track to open in 2020.

Construction has started on this concert hall building dedicated to American musician Buddy Holly.
The rock-and-roll musician shot to fame with tracks including Peggy Sue and That’ll Be the Day, before he was killed in a plane crash in 1959, aged 23.
Inspired by and in the spirit of Lubbock, West Texas, and the South Plains, Buddy Holly Hall will feature a 2,200-seat main theatre, an additional 400-seat theatre, a 5,000-square-foot multi-purpose room and a 22,000-square-foot Dance Centre.
A dynamic light sculpture will animate an adjacent 200-foot-high telecommunications tower and be a marker for the new performing arts centre as well as a symbol of renewal for Lubbock that will be visible from a great distance.
The building is designed as a tribute to the artist, and to fit into its setting on the Llano Estacado desert plains.
The multi-purpose nature of the venue will allow for a wide range of activity, from opera, Broadway shows and symphonic music, to rock concerts, conferences and social events. In addition to local performing arts groups and touring shows, the facility will house Ballet Lubbock with its own rehearsal and performance space and provide access to the Lubbock Independent School District as a learning centre.

DESIGN DETAILS REVEALED FOR THE BUDDY HOLLY HALL OF PERFORMING ARTS AND SCIENCES
May 2, 2016, TORONTO – Design details from Diamond Schmitt Architects have been released for The Buddy Holly Hall of Performing Arts and Sciences. The arts complex will be built in Lubbock, Texas, birthplace of the legendary 1950s pop star whose brief career influenced generations of musicians and fans.
“The aim for Lubbock is to create a performing arts center as good acoustically, as welcoming to the public, and as attractive to performers to be among the best halls in North America,” said Jack Diamond, Principal, with Toronto-based Diamond Schmitt Architects.
“Our goal is to have this venue feel great for all types of performers and audiences – whether they are in jeans and hats or ball gowns,” said Matthew Lella, Principal, Diamond Schmitt. To achieve this versatility, the floor of the main auditorium can have raked seating or be flat for a standing audience, either below or in line with the stage. The hall will have top-tier natural acoustics for a large symphony orchestra as well as cutting-edge amplified sound for touring bands and shows.

Clive Wilkinson transforms Vancouver department store into headquarters for Microsoft
Clive Wilkinson Architects has converted the upper floors of a downtown Vancouver store into an open-plan office for US tech company Microsoft to house its growing Canadian workforce.
The Microsoft Canada Excellence Centre is located within a former department store in the city's downtown district.
The adaptive reuse project entailed transforming the top two floors of the building into an open and flexible office for the company's growing workforce of nearly 600 employees in the Canadian city.
Staff members were previously spread across three locations.
Microsoft's corporate headquarters is located 230 kilometres south, in the city of Redmond, Washington. The company – founded by Bill Gates and responsible for the Windows operating system – also has regional headquarters in cities across the world, including Copenhagen and Vienna.
In addition to accommodating two gaming entities and a software developer unit, the Vancouver office needed to be highly adaptable to address changing business models in the future.
The team modified the building’s exterior and completely reconfigured the interior.
"The remodel removed the solid facade, typical of department stores of its era, and re-skinned the building with a new glass curtainwall, exposing the spectacular views of the city and the surrounding landscapes beyond," said Clive Wilkinson Architects, a Los Angeles studio known for its open and progressive workspaces.
Inside, the studio created a collaborative environment with a range of workspaces, from communal desks and cosy booths to private meeting areas.
Areas were divided into "neighbourhoods" connected by pathways.
"Expansive floorplates are defined by neighbourhoods of open work benches woven together with circulation paths that purposefully expand to incorporate open and semi-enclosed collaboration rooms," the team said.
Light-coloured wood was used for wall panels, ceiling installations and furniture. Exposed duct work in certain areas gives the space an industrial feel.
While conceiving the design, the team drew inspiration from the region's natural features, including its vast pine forests.
"The airy, branch-like ceiling structures and the more grounded, boulder-esque enclosures are a visual nod to the canopies and roots, respectively, of the giant tree specimens unique to the area," the studio said.
A staircase that connects the two levels was built within an opening in the space.
"In an effort to stretch the project budget and preserve the schedule, an existing void in the upper level's floor slab was utilised to introduce a communicating stair," the firm said.
The reception area features a sculptural desk and partition made of wood. The lobby connects to a cafe with an espresso bar, which is used by both staff and visitors.
An area called the "maker lab" serves as a place where employees can explore and test new ideas.
Throughout the office, pops of colour – including spring green, magenta and lemon yellow – were used to accentuate collaboration spaces and social gathering areas.
The space is fitted with contemporary decor, along with ample whiteboards for sketching ideas.
