or, well, not their existence, period. they're a valid health option that is best for some people, medically. but the sheer aggressiveness with which they're being pushed nowadays
the last few times I went to the eye doctor for my annual check-up, she was HEAVILY on my case to switch to dailies. like, to the point of arrogance and condescension when I said I preferred to stick with monthlies (I've worn contacts since I was 12, for reference). I also posted about it on a forum and got massive negativity in response, as well as being talked down to by someone claiming to be an optometrist himself
now if this were like...anti-vaxxer sentiment I'd understand that reaction. but from what I've heard, while monthlies do carry a higher risk of eye infections and such, they're not medically unsound or unsafe across the board. I'm willing to accept that risk, and since science has not found that they're terrible and should immediately be discontinued, I feel like my wishes should be respected and not belittled
point two: plastic waste. they say it's somehow less than using monthlies, but frankly I just don't see how that's possible. 365 of those little eye chips- times two! -and their packaging, add up to less than a case and a bottle of solution every few months, plus 24 contacts and their packaging? it doesn't make sense to me, and it doesn't help that I mostly see contact lens websites repeating this "fact." of course all contacts produce plastic waste, and I'd be perfectly willing to accept this as one of those You Have To Consume; You Just Decide What Areas Of Your Life Are Optimal For Minimization of Waste And What Aren't things, if dailies weren't being pushed so hard
(also I found two studies showing that monthly-replacement soft lenses produce less plastic waste than daily disposables. which, like. yes, this should be obvious, but here we are. granted, that's only two, and both studies emphasize that dailies and their accoutrements can be recycled, but see below)
some big companies have "contact recycling programs" but like. who's to say that's not greenwashing? where's the oversight? where are the investigations into what these programs actually DO? god knows we've been there before with recycling and corporations trying to pull the nylon-poly-blend Vegan Wool(TM) over our eyes
they're also more expensive than monthlies, which like. does not lend a positive slant to optometrists pushing them so stridently
on top of that, I and some other monthly users have noted that our contacts aren't lasting as long as they used to. for me, it was 17-18 years of smooth sailing with barely any problems, and as of like a year ago my contacts barely last two weeks without clouding up, ripping, chipping at the edges, causing my vision to blur, becoming uncomfortable...my brand did change around that time, so I hope it's just that, and the sample size of other monthly users I've pooled is VERY small. but it sure seems interesting that they suddenly started pushing a product that doesn't last long enough for people to notice low quality, around the time that at least some users of the longer-lasting version start having problems
you're pooh-poohing all of my concerns- which are indeed backed up by science, it seems! -with a "fix" that relies on big companies being honest about recycling, to push me from a non-ideal but still medically sound option to another that makes you more money?

People to feel guilty (because guilty people will buy products that assuage their guilt, even if the guilt is caused by "I am using too much stuff")
No restrictions on their acquisitions, manufacturing, or sales
What we need is less. Less stuff, less manufacturing, less frantic 24/7 activity. Less "productivity."
We have the money for less. What we don't have, is governments that are willing to say "hmm maybe we DON'T need infinite future 'growth' and we could just... make sure people have enough to live and be happy and stop damaging the planet we live on."
Because "make sure everyone has enough to thrive" means "no more ultra-rich people who maintain their power through oppression and the misery of thousands of employees who are too scared to leave."
Fixing this needs a systemic change. Not a revolution. "Throw the bastards out" or "get the guillotines" will not fix the system itself. The problem is not the current government employees (not even "top" employees - presidents, senators, and so on); the problem is not the current couple-dozen ridiculously influential billionaires.
(I mean. I could do with quite a few of those vanishing. But vanishing those will not fix the problems.)
The problem is societies that idolize wealth like it's a personal virtue, rather than an accident of birth and occasionally circumstance. The problem is societies that promote celebrities as if talent (beauty, skill, genius, charisma, whatever) makes a person more important - objectively better - than the people who don't have it. The problem is the believe that health and youth are aspects of life that you can control, but kindness and sincerity are just random traits that some people have and others don't.
(Imagine if rude assholes were treated the way fat people are treated: "Don't you know there are programs that can help you? I have a mindfulness app you should check out. Have you TRIED being more compassionate? Yeah, I can see you have diabetes... have you considered being more pleasant to the people around you? No, there's no direct connection, but happier people are more healthy; we have studies that show that.") (Imagine if they were shut out of projects at work, ostracized at school, penalized more sharply when arrested or convicted of crimes. Imagine if social cruelty got the same public reaction as a fat girl in a bikini: "well I guess they're allowed to do that, but I can't see why they would want to, or why anyone else should have to put up with it nearby.")
Aside from the social changes we need (which I'm aware really don't boil down to "people should just be kinder to each other") - the key thing is, this is not a "what should I, personally, do to fix this?" problem.
That's capitalistic corporate propaganda.
The solutions for the problems of waste (and their related environmental issues) are community-based, not individual.
Capitalism has no problems with the recycling movement because it's not designed to reduce consumption. It's designed to reduce the chance that the poor will protest their living and working conditions.
"Why do you care about the high cost of X? You can just reuse the packaging, it's like you're getting two purchases for one!"

The grudging allowance for some of these things is less about "we need a massive shift to more shared resources, less individual use" and is closer to "let the really poor people do something so we don't have to increase minimum wage."
...Be wary of "recycled" goods that are just greenwashing on over a standard corporate structure. If it costs more than the non-recycled version, it's failed to "reduce" anything.
The more I talk about recycling with people the more I realise just how many people recycle backwards.

The Stuff - 31 Days of Horror

Being a child inching towards being a teenager, I often found myself staring at the rise and fall of so many fads - toys, games, foods… Yet, so frequently, I would find myself rejecting them, finding so many of them to be dull, disinteresting, instead sometimes finding myself wanting to check out these things later. Like a cycle, we see something new replace the old, while the old is deemed to be embarrassing to still enjoy. We must buy in quickly to join the elite, while those who grab onto them late are laughed at. Consumerism is designed to feel like it's withering away with every sale, and sometimes buying in early can yield the most enjoyment, but other times, it pays to wait, or ignore them completely.  
The Stuff is a film that I’ve wanted to watch for so long, simply from hearing a vague premise and its captivating poster, which alludes to a style of 80s practical effects I love. Directed by Larry Cohen, the film centres around the titular stuff, a desert that is taking the US by storm, however, a former FBI agent begins looking into it and the deadly effects it carves. 
Ultimately, the movie isn’t quite as horror filled as many would want - by the third act it's almost easy to forget this is a horror movie - in fact, I too was hoping for it to keep pushing itself by the time the army focused third act rolls round, but at the very least, I adore the premise of this film and so much of what it's doing. 
I want to start by looking at the main trio of characters we follow, Mo Rutherfield, Jason and Nicole. Mo is a strange character which only goes to make him more distinctive, at first I found myself unsure of him, yet quickly he’s captivating to watch. I don’t love everything about this character, I think his introductory scene especially is trying too hard to make him seem cool, but ultimately he’s a very serviceable protagonist that is usually fun to watch. I think Jason is my favourite of the trio, a young boy whose family are consumed by The Stuff. This already makes him such a great character to follow, we watch how the villain tears apart his life and therefore how he must adapt. Finally, there’s Nicole, who I enjoy the most when she’s first introduced, seemingly as someone who is attempting to climb a monetary ladder, and sure, it’s nice to see her change when she learns how harmful the product she’s advertising is, but this also leads to her character falling flat. Ultimately, none of these characters stick out loads, they’re all weird in their own ways but not quite weird enough to ensure they stand out against the backdrop of the film.

Ultimately, it's the stuff that leaves the biggest impression. This film's villain is a desert, and yet, it carries such an alluring presence, it's a delight to watch. Contained in a colourful indigo and magenta packaging, the stuff is chalky white, a food that everyone simply can’t get enough of. From the first moments we see it crawling out of its packaging, the substance grows just as iconic as so many other horror villains, it's so creative and fun to watch; I find it especially fun to watch move, the feeling it has a mind of its own, yet its food, it can’t communicate or divulge its intentions. Ultimately, the stuff is a creature seeking to monopolise people, it's a parasite, which is exactly the thesis of the film.

The stuff itself is a stand in for both fads and unhealthy foods being sold to people in a bright, colourful fashion, while secretly it eats away at you. Cohen stated “"My main inspiration was the consumerism and corporate greed found in our country and the damaging products that were being sold. [...] For example, you had foods being pulled off the market because they were hazardous to people's health." This satire is what builds most of the film, especially when digging into the more corporate led characters, we learn quickly that none of the higher-ups are willing to eat the stuff, despite being more than willing to sell it. Even from the opening we see that rival companies want to learn how to have the same effect on customers, how to drive demand, again, not caring for the consumers in any capacity. 
Still, we see products being released that are ultimately harmful, but more prominently now, fads and trends guide people to consume, the stuff is mimetic of this, turning its consumers into zombie-like people, only wanting to eat the stuff - at one point, Jason’s mother laments on how the product is low in calories, and therefore, how it must be good. All this is tied together with the branding of the product, its eye catching, and the jingle within the advertisement is an earworm.

This reminds me a lot of Halloween III in a lot of ways, from the main characters to the sinister products being sold and their harmful effects. Many have also drawn comparisons to 50s movies like Invasion of the Body Snatchers and The Blob (and their 80s counterparts). 
Most of my favourite sequences in the film follow Jason’s first act storyline, as his family grows hooked on The Stuff, we see him navigating a world obsessed with the product, all as he seeks to avoid its sinister side effects. I love this style of horror, of people you love and know covertly changing into someone seeking to harm you, and these stories often play out best with a child at the centre of the conflict, it adds to the inescapable feeling of it all. 
Of course, all the deaths here are great too. To run through some which I think are the most effective, the scene where Mr Vickers is mauled by his own stuff fuelled dog is great, it's a curious sequence building up to it as Mo questions him, and ultimately it pays off as the first kill of the film, it shows so perfectly how the stuff works and the dog puppet seen before the kill is so endearing to me, it radiates so much of the cosiness that the first half of the film harbours. In fact, any death with the puppets is great, I love Chocolate Chip Charlie’s death, it's so unexpected and echoes the poster, the unnaturally agape mouth as the stuff oozes from his mouth, all while the inside of his throat appears grossly bumpy. This style of kill is also seen earlier on in the film when a man infected by the stuff is killed by it leaving his body.

On a side note, I love Chocolate Chip Charlie, I find him so fun. 
As alluded to throughout the review, I kind of got lost when the military got involved. It’s a natural escalation of the situation, but it’s also an easy way for me to lose interest. From here on out, the film almost feels more like a family action-comedy, the score especially hones in on this feeling, and with a new major side character introduced that I didn’t care all too much for, I found myself unfortunately caring less. Which really is a shame, before this point the movie nailed everything I had hoped it would, but around halfway I realised the only way that it could escalate, and when it started to actualise everything felt a whole lot less interesting and scary. 
However, the film ends on a scene of a black market dealing of the stuff, which I adore. It alludes towards this idea that once an addictive product is introduced to the market, pulling it suddenly will only cause its own onset of problems. 
Overall, I really enjoyed The Stuff, it's a great time and I truly adore the first two acts of this, especially when looking into Jason’s story, all that stuff is perfect! It's a very fun time commenting on something still so prevalent today, maybe even more so as social media aids in influencing these harmful products.
