Private school gets conducted exam; defy orders; DEO asked to send show cause notice - Times of India
PATIALA: Despite the orders of the state government to shut down the educational institutions and schools a private school in Ropar was found operational and it also got conducted exams of elementary school children direct under the nose of district administration.
The school authorities, when queried, said that parents of their wards did not get convinced over the closure of institutions announced by the state government. They also got conducted the exam of school children maintaining that it was their last exam.
Neelam, the school principal of Model Middle School at College Road in Ropar city said that we are requesting and turning away the parents of children. She said that the parents were either ignorant or not believing the news and thus reaching the school with a request to get the exams of their children conducted. She said that the school authorities were worried about the health of children and taking all the precautions.
SDM Ropar Harjot Kaur, said, “The matter came to our knowledge following which the Deputy Commissioner had written to District Education Officer to serve a show-cause-notice to the school authorities. Action will be taken against all those defying the government orders. A case will be registered against the authorities if any school found operational from onwards in the district.”

The trunk-shaped device, which is fitted with ultraviolet germicidal irradiation technology, takes only 30 minutes to sanitize anything that is put inside it and costs only ₹500. Before the items are taken out of the device, they should be kept inside for 10 minutes to cool (after the main 30 minutes). The device is based on ultraviolet germicidal irradiation technology used in water purifiers. More than one lakh samples have been tested for Covid-19 infection in Punjab so far, Punjab Health Minister Balbir Singh Sidhu Thursday said. He said Punjab has increased its testing per million to 3,259, which is higher than the national average of 3,046. “Punjab has completed testing of over 1,00,000 samples for COVID-19,” the minister said in an official release here. Sidhu added that the state was conducting around 4,500 tests per day. The minister said the state government has decided to provide special training to community health workers, staff nurses and pharmacists for collection of swab samples to increase sample collection capacity. The state government has also decided to conduct free testing for samples sent by empanelled private hospitals or clinics, he added. The minister said instructions have been issued to civil surgeons to enlist private hospitals, clinics and laboratories which are willing to get empanelled. These facilities should have separate isolated spaces for suspected cases of COVID-l9 where samples will be taken, he said. They shall arrange the required logistics, collect samples, pack them and send to the nearest government health facility as per protocol, Sidhu said. He said the private hospitals and clinics availing this facility should not charge more than Rs 1,000 from patients for sample collection. 39 new cases Meanwhile, Punjab reported 39 new cases of novel coronavirus infection, taking the total tally to 2,415. Among the new cases were a pregnant woman from Muktsar and a police official from Hoshiarpur. Fifteen cases were reported from Amritsar district alone out of which there were 14 cases in which source of infection was not yet known. Eight positive cases, including two who returned from abroad and one arriving in the state via domestic air travel, had source of infection from outside the state, read the official media bulletin. Ludhiana reported six new cases, all contacts of positive cases, and Pathankot and Jalandhar four each. The source of infection in cases from Jalandhar was also not known immediately as they did not have any travel history nor were they in touch with any known positive case. Three cases were reported from Bathinda with travel history to Maharashtra. The districts of Fazilka, Muktsar, Ropar, Nawanshahr, Sangrur, Hoshiarpur and Gurdaspur reported one new case each. There are 325 active cases in the state. As many as 2,043 patients have recovered, as per the bulletin. A total of 47 COVID-19 deaths have been reported. Maximum cases so far have been reported from Amritsar (405), followed by Jalandhar (262) and Ludhiana (206).

IIT Ropar researchers develop infrared vision system for Covid-19 suspects' identification - Times of India
ROPAR: A team of researchers at IIT Ropar has developed a prototype remote temperature mapping device that can detect the COVID19 suspects by screening their faces. The Infrared vision system (IVS) or the device is based on InfraRed Thermography (IRT) that can help in the safe, fast and remote screening of COVID-19 suspects having developed symptoms like fever, tiredness, shortness of breath, a runny nose etc.
The researchers claimed that InfraRed Thermography (IRT) involves the mapping of the thermal profiles over the test object in order to estimate the health condition of the person or object being screened.
Coronavirus lockdown: Latest updates It is portable, economical, and safe with remote screening capabilities along with self-decision making ability to detect suspects without human intervention at crowded places.
They said that the remote-controlled device will be put at the entrance of the gate of crowded places like Railway Station, Airport, Bus stand, Cinema Halls, Malls etc. The device will take an infrared image of the face of every person and show the image of the person within two seconds, giving the information by saying ‘Infected, ‘suspected’ or ‘healthy. The information can be connected to the central Desktop without wire and can help the authorities to detect the infected persons.
“The IVS can make the self-decision in detecting the suspects without any human intervention by considering the relative temperature distribution over the selected features over the face region including nose, forehead, eyes etc. The device is unique and a first of kind as it can monitor the infrared radiation emanating over the human face for detection. At present one of the most widely used screening mechanism for COVID-19 at large gathering places is by deploying temperature screening devices to detect the symptoms of COVID-19 with the help of hand-held thermal or infrared imaging devices. However, this IVS makes the screening process easy and lessens the risk unlike the limited range of hand-held thermal imaging devices widely being used with human involvement.”
He said that this IVS measures a wide range of temperatures with a pixel resolution of 160 X 120 and sensitivity of 70 mK. Further, thermograms captured during the screening process are exported to the processing unit wirelessly and the decision will be displayed almost in no time.
“We carried out testing on some students but could not carry testing on the patients due to lockdown. The prototype is ready for clinical trials and for this IIT Ropar invites the medical industry experts,” said, Dr. Ravibabu.

PATIALA: With the increasing demand and thus prices of sanitizers following the threat of Covid19 the IIT Ropar is ready with their own sanitizers which they can make available to anyone in critical need. The scientists have prepared only six litres of sanitizer and had 50 litres of raw material stored with them.
The researchers claimed that they can prepare 70 litres of sanitizer in an hour. However, at this moment the institute has manufactured the hand sanitizer for their staff of IIT Ropar and the transport staff.
The researchers claimed to have prepared the hand-sanitizers with the standards of the World Health Organisation (WHO) and Centres of Disease Control which is a Federal Health Agency in the US.
“The composition of the hand sanitizer consists of 70 per cent isopropyl alcohol, glycerol and other chemicals with standards of the World Health Organisation. Around 50 per cent of alcohol is required to kill the micro-organism. We have prepared 6 litres for our faculty members. In the need of the hour we are glad to come up with the sanitizer which is almost unavailable in the market. We have a raw-material stock of around 50 litres of sanitizer and we can prepare 70 litres of sanitizer in an hour”, said, Dr T J Dhilip, Head of Department Chemistry at IIT Ropar.
IIT Ropar Director SK Das said, “We have prepared the sanitizer with standards of WHO and we are first using for our staff. It will be difficult to prepare and give to the public as we don’t have that much capacity. But, we can give it to the critical cases including if the administration needs for the quarantine of suspects. We can also provide to the civil hospital in Ropar or to help someone. We are not looking at the production cost right now as we have only motive to support the community in the times of need. We are trying to get some more chemicals for more production”
Deputy Commissioner Ropar Sonali Giri said that under the disaster management fund they have already procured sanitizers and masks required for the process of quarantine of suspects however if the need arises the communication in this regard will be done with the institute.

PATIALA: IIT Ropar has taken utmost responsibility to make sure students or faculty who recently returning from their hometown or from abroad seek out proper care and are actively engaged in daily planning in an effort to inform and reduce the risk to faculty, staff, students and visitors from the virus. As students are returning to campus after Mid-semester break, and coming from different parts of the nation, they have to undergo Mandatory Medical screening upon the arrival. The Institute will host a Special Medical camp.
“Although, the Institute has assessed that its operations so far is low risk, however we are ramping up efforts to protect students, faculty and staff from the potentially deadly illness and remain prepared for any eventuality,” said Prof. Sarit K Das, Director, IIT Ropar. The Institute authorities have sent out email alerts to their campus communities regarding the symptoms of COVID-19 and precautions to take in the event that an individual experiences or comes into contact with these symptoms.
The Institute Health Center has been carefully monitoring all students and is ready to treat patients and put in place proportionate, precautionary measures and is trained to safely care for patients, and is coordinating preparedness activities and plans to maintain necessary operations and services in the event of local disruptions.
Foreign visits Cancelled
IIT Ropar has suspended all Institute travel to abroad. “As a precautionary measure against spread of Coronavirus (Covid-19), the competent authority has decided to cancel all the foreign visits of faculty to attend any conference or workshop etc. with immediate effect till further orders and requested them not to travel abroad.
Further, as decided by the competent authority the faculty who visited abroad during the last 15 days, are directed to contact the Medical Centre and advised to take compulsory Medical Leave till 14 days from the date of their return to India. They should be at their home and need not attend any academic or administrative duties. This also includes the faculty members who joined the institute during last 14 days from abroad.

PATIALA: In a fight against the pandemic the researchers at IIT Ropar are proving to be the real heroes by helping in providing various techniques to deal with the coronavirus and infected persons. The researchers have now come up with a technique to clean and sterilize the Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) kits, surgical masks and other protective gears without getting any damage to them.
The masks and PPE kits are highly being demanded by the doctors and medical staff. In Punjab, the medical staff in Patiala even staged protest to get these PPE kits to deal with Covid19 patients. The researchers said that most affected nations with the pandemic also faced scarcity of these kits.
Coronavirus lockdown: Latest updates
The IIT Ropar researchers have come up with unique equipment that would clean and sterilize the masks and PPE kits in a three-way sterilization process by using Ultrasonication, UV-C irradiation and Oxidizing treatment of the kits.
The research has been carried out by the project investigators Prof. Naresh Rakha and Dr. Khushboo Rakha along with their team members including Dr. Manigandan, Dr. Dhiraj Mahajan, Dr. Neha Sardana and Dr. Shahriar Reza, Kushagra.
Learning from the experiences from the reports from European countries and USA that had shown the health care providers were washing these disposable items themselves, the IIT researchers decided to come up with a solution to fight this crisis in India.
“In the wake of the Covid-19 crisis, surgical masks, N-95 Face Respirators and PPE have become scarce. The scarcity of PPE has forced many people to reuse these items. But washing PPE like ordinary clothes has limitations as it destroys the texture and pore size of the surgical masks and Face respirators. Sterility of the inner layers of PPE is also a serious issue. We have come up with a prototype of a unique equipment which will sterilizes and cleans ‘once used masks and PPE’ by three proven pathogen-killers namely Ultraviolet-C irradiation, Ultra-sonication (Ultrasonic waves) and an oxidizing agent”, said Assistant Professor, Metallurgy and Materials Engineering department at IIT Ropar.

Ultraviolet–C light, ultrasounds and oxidizing agent are known to disrupt capsid of virus. By employing three sterilizers in combination, one after another, respirators and PPE should be completely sterilized or disinfected and cleaned, while material texture and pore size is preserved, so that they can be safely reused. In one hour, this equipment can sterilize and clean, about 200 surgical masks or 100 N95 Face respirators or 10 PPE, claimed the scientists of IIT Ropar.
“The prototype has attracted the attention of Bengaluru-based biomedical equipment industry and detailed discussions are underway. In these difficult and challenging times, new instruments to fight COVID-19 should be made available to the COVID-warriors as soon as possible. Therefore, scientists of Indian institute of Technology, Ropar would like to share the schematic of the prototype for immediate attention of stakeholders”, said Khushboo Rakha. Procedure Personnel handling the used masks and PPE must wear gloves and change the gloves while going to the next step. Used masks and PPE should be placed inside the 20 litre Ultrasonic Bath. The ultrasonic bath should contain oxidizing agent (H202 solution) and the Ultra sonication should be done for 5-7 minutes. In case of non-availability of H2O2, any oxidizing detergent may be used. Three to four sets of these ultrasonically sterilized masks or PPE should then be placed in the UV-C drying chamber. The processing time of this step is 30 minutes. The completely sterilized masks can then be removed and kept safely for reuse. It is of utmost importance to maintain self-hygiene and environment cleanliness during this process.

Sanjana Hira, a graduate student at Ashoka University in Sonipat, has been attending online classes from her Gurgaon home ever since educational institutions across India closed down campuses to contain the spread of coronavirus.
“While many of our lectures are being held online through video-conferencing apps like Zoom and Google Hangouts, some professors prefer uploading prerecorded tutorials on YouTube,” says the second-year student. “The tests, meanwhile, are being held in the openbook format and each student is receiving a different set of questions.”
While Hira is happy about the flexible hours and getting to study in the comfort of her home, she is concerned about the internet network since all other family members are working from home and consuming bandwidth.
In another room in the same house, her brother Siddhant Hira, a final-year student at OP Jindal Global University, too has been attending online classes for over a week. “Background noise is often becoming a problem for students as well as teachers. Also, I am in my final semester and we have to write a long thesis for which we need a lot of face-to-face time with our supervisor. That will be a challenge,” he says.
The Indian Institutes of Technology too have started online classes for their students as all the campuses are shut.
“Tech infrastructure is not a problem for us. Plus, our students are tech-savvy. But the challenge we are facing is that some of our professors, though brilliant researchers, are uncomfortable in virtual classrooms. So we are asking them to upload their lectures on our internal website where students can access them.
We are also avoiding the use of high-resolution videos so that everyone can stream them,” says Sarit Das, director, IIT-Ropar. The cost of moving to an online teaching system has not been very high, with the institute spending an additional Rs 8 lakh so far, says Das.
Meanwhile, classrooms at IIT-Delhi are not yet being live-streamed since many of the students might not have access to high-speed internet in their homes.
“We have more than 7,000 students enrolled for course-based programmes. We are sending the students pre-recorded lectures and assignments. The professors will go through these assignments when the students return to the campus,” says Shantanu Roy, dean academics at IIT-Delhi.
Trisha Malik, a first-year student at University of King’s College in Halifax, is also apprehensive about bandwidth as well as the time difference between India and Canada.
“So far, my college has shared pre-recorded lectures in an audio book format and is not holding any tests. But I have to write and submit two essays,” says Malik, who returned to her home in Mumbai earlier this month after her campus closed down due to Covid-19.
Streaming Classrooms Technology companies, on their part, are helping institutions smoothen their sudden transition to an online-only teaching format with hardly any time to put in place the infrastructure because of the India-wide lockdown.
Google has launched Teach from Home, an information hub to teach educators on how to conduct online classes amid the virus lockdown. The tech company is also giving free access to Hangouts Meet video-conferencing to all G Suite and G Suite for Education customers till July 1. “When connecting remotely, it is challenging to maintain the class’ attention.
Teachers can use approaches like designing interactive quizzes, planning smaller sessions and introducing project-based learning that can support the individual learning needs of different students,” says Bani Dhawan, head of education, South Asia at Google. Khan Academy, which provides free tutorials on maths, science, programming and several other subjects, has increased its offerings amid the coronavirus lockdown.
“Over the last week, we have created several resources for teachers and parents to facilitate remote learning. In India, we see evidence that in the last week, users are ramping up the use of Khan Academy. Time spent learning has been on the rise and parent registrations have hit record numbers,” says Sandeep Bapna, managing director, Khan Academy India.

Even online learning provider Coursera is giving free access to its services to universities across India.
“Last year, we launched Coursera for Campus to help higher education institutions supplement what is being taught in classes. We have now made this free for institutions in India till July end. Nearly 500 institutions have already signed up. Several Indian universities do not have digital competency to make a quick transition to e-learning and our resources are now supporting them,” says Raghav Gupta, managing director, India & APAC, Coursera.

ROPAR: If you want to move out but don’t have a mask, don’t get panic. You can make the one, almost equivalent to N95 Mask, at home. The IIT Ropar researchers have come up with the solution to the shortage of masks which has been witnessed one of the major problem being faced by India after being hit by the Coronavirus. The researchers have done testing of smoke and water by comparing their mask with the N95 mask.
The team of IIT Ropar researchers which works on providing solutions to some of the Corona infections related problems had started carrying out brainstorming sessions since March 22 to find technological solutions to tackle Coronavirus related issues under the Indian scenario. Thanks to Mechanical Engineering department Associate Professor Dr Dhiraj Mahajan, Assistant Professor S. Manigandan and a few other faculty members who developed this technique.

“There was a shortage of protective gear for the general public due to Coronavirus pandemic. We worked a lot to get a solution by preparing the masks that may be equivalent to N95 masks or at least can prevent the risks for the general public. Like N95 mask, the home made mask under our technique can prevent smoke and it is better on parameters of resisting water. As our home made masks are not medically certified, we cannot claim that it can prevent all kinds of viruses but we have tested them for numerous times in the last few days. The homemade mask prevents smoke and water better than N95 as it has been prepared by using a simple wax that is coated on the handkerchief”, said, Assistant Professor S. Manigandhan.

Manigandan added that it has been made for the general public who are using handkerchiefs following scarcity of medically approved masks.
“We have come out with an idea to use wax-coated mask as an immediate the solution to tackle the crisis situation arising due to scarcity of mask.
Methodology: A small quantity of solid candle or natural wax is heated mildly until liquefied. A desired or whole part of the handkerchief is soaked in liquid wax and left it dried for 30 min. Drying of wax-coated handkerchief using direct sunlight for 2 to 3 hours is recommended to get rid of any odour associated with wax.
More on Covid-19 The researchers have also shared a video on YouTube that shows the method of making N95-equivalent mask using handkerchief and wax (candle wax, natural wax or paraffin wax can be used for this purpose). In the video, the researchers also show the smoke testing done on wax-coated handkerchief, N95 mask, and simple handkerchief. Using the smoke test, they demonstrate that the smoke does not pass through the wax-coated handkerchief as well as N95 while a handkerchief without wax coating allow smoke to pass through.
