In the Midst of Unseen Certainty
In the theatre of the cosmos, I find myself seated at the crossroads of belief and disbelief. On one hand, the theist, passionately defending his faith, on the other, the atheist steadfastly voicing his skepticism. I observe this dialogue as an unbiased spectator, each side offering a symphony of thoughts that forms a rich intellectual melody that resonates within me. The perspectives of both…

Schrödinger's King in the Bird Box
Time for a return to the single topic that most torments me in this entire franchise canon: is Harrow in the goddamn bird or not?
Except not really. I'm not going to go over the evidence again. I've done it before. Almost everyone has done it before. It has only gotten stronger. At the absolute minimum, an attempt was made to put Harrow in the bird. That's not really disputable. I admit it. It's over.
This is actually the second time that I've struggled with narrative cognitive dissonance regarding a real core factor of this show (like not "what's the deal with Archdragon reproduction," but something that is clearly supposed to be thought about with the intent that it will eventually make sense), and eventually managed to rotate it so hard in my mind that the way I wanted to see it slipped out of my grasp and I saw it the way it's actually intended. Ironically, I think I may have been thinking about the Ocean arcanum at the time.
Anyway, what previously always bothered me about this question was mainly two things:
It would have a devastating impact on Ezran's character development if Harrow reappeared during s1-s3, but the timeskip and arc of s4-s5 made it so it would also be deeply weird for him to reappear before the show ends.
If Harrow is in Pip's body, both Viren and Pip's subsequent behavior, as well as how Pip is treated by the narrative on a meta level, make absolutely no fucking sense.
But... if Viren doesn't know whether the spell was successful or not? If we are meant to not know whether the spell was successful or not, because it's not going to get resolved in the show itself?
If we accept that the earliest point with any chance of the hooks for this plot being set is late s7—because yes, Aaron Ehasz would do an exact beat-for-beat repeat of Zuko and his mom—that both puts Ezran far enough in his growth for it not to be threatened by the "real" king returning, and keeps Harrow out of the loop for long enough that it doesn't really make sense for him to do anything but step down from the throne in favor of Ezran, anyway. As for Viren and Pip's behavior, if the show isn't going to advance that plot much further during its runtime, there's no reason for us to be constantly reminded of it. The setup has been made, and they can just let it stew because it's not actually relevant.
That being said, Viren's behavior actually does make a lot of sense if "is Harrow in the goddamn bird or not" is a question that is also tormenting him. To that end, I'll be doing some digging here on the nature and context of the body-switching spell, Pip/Harrow's behavior post-swap, and what the hell is going on in the Harrow section of Viren's dark magic dream.
The Spell is Made Up (Unlike All Those Real Spells)
First of all, I think there's been some long-term incorrect assumptions made about the body-switching spell. It's not a known spell: this is Claudia and Viren essentially flying by the seat of their pants... but we rarely stop to think about how that contextualizes the rest of the discussion around it.
The initial plan is to find the assassins and ambush them before nightfall. As Soren points out and Viren himself confirms: if they fail, the assassins will be unstoppable under the full moon and Harrow is as good as dead. Claudia decides to put her mind to that problem, so naturally she stops to flirt with Callum in the library and gets the inspiration for the spell from something he says.
(Fun fact: none of that happens in the novelization. Zero amount.)
She brings the idea to Viren, and they develop the spell from there. It's not really clear if Claudia actually knows whether something like that would be possible, but Viren does know that transferring the essence of a person can be done—he's got a nice little coin collection that proves it.
As for the snake, there's no way Viren "acquired" a two-headed soulfang serpent because he has a book somewhere on how to use a rare, malformed specimen of a dangerous Xadian creature to switch people between bodies. He probably thought "that's weird, but could be useful," or maybe whoever sold it to him just had a great sales pitch. A non-trivial amount of success at dark magic is in having access to rarer and more powerful reagents than your competition.
Anyway, what this means is that Viren has absolutely no idea what success looks like for this spell, particularly when using it on subjects of different species. When he describes it to Harrow, he is 110% talking out of his ass. He sounds like he knows exactly what the spell will do and how, and I think a lot of us kind of fell for that. He needs to sound confident, because if he admitted that he doesn't know if it will even work, with a possible failure condition of "snake eats your soul," well... a) Harrow rightfully wouldn't go for it, and b) he'd look incompetent, which is the worst thing ever.
When he goes to Harrow's room, he casts the spell... but did it work? I think that whatever it did, it did it in a way that Viren can't tell whether it worked or not. Maybe both Harrow and Pip passed out. Maybe Viren just didn't want to hang around for the aftermath—in the novelization, when he exits the room and runs into Callum, his eyes are still black from spellcasting.
Activities of Dr. Pip Harrow, Ph.D.
Probably the thing that has always bothered me the most about the entire Harrow-Pip theory is that yes, literally everything in the lead-up and immediate aftermath of the assassination points to that being exactly what happened... and then the narrative lens of the show completely drops the rope. Pip doesn't even appear in the novelization until Viren's pre-coronation scene, which is funny given his looming presence over half the scenes with Harrow in the show.
Pip appears exactly twice after the assassination—once in s1 and once in s2—otherwise he goes completely ignored. He's not in the background of Viren's office, or the throne room, or Harrow's bedroom. No one ever mentions him ever again. Ezran never mentions him again, in the show or in any supplementary materials. You'd think the boy who can talk to animals might have some interest in his dead dad's beloved pet... but who knows, maybe Pip has always been an asshole and Ezran's actually like "thank goodness I never have to speak to that dude again."
Anyway, in all of Pip's appearances, he behaves like... a bird. A trained bird—Harrow can rely on him not just fucking off—but he doesn't demonstrate human-like intelligence the way Bait does. That being said, Bait is essentially a main-cast character (at least as much as, say, Corvus... maybe even Soren) while Pip is a plot device, and even then it takes until well into the first arc for Bait to show the kind of complex reasoning and initiative that separates him from an unusually smart dog. Pip's human is also a stressed-out king, rather than a rambunctious ten-year-old, so he's probably a bit more sedate overall. I would personally bet, given the way the show has progressed with regard to Xadian creatures, that Pip is as intelligent as Bait.
The point of that is: even if Harrow's consciousness is occupying Pip's body, he's not really doing anything with it. He's pissy, sure:
But is that Harrow's pissy-ness or Pip's? Even if Pip is only as intelligent as a trainable bird, that's plenty intelligent enough for both grieving/confusion that their human is gone and holding a grudge against obvious assholes. Viren cages him, but is that because he flipped out and got bite-y? And was it Harrow flipping out, or Pip? Or is he caged just because Viren's of the general attitude that animals belong in cages? Those who fail tests of love... We just don't know.
A lot of us also, to circle back to assumptions about the spell, have tended to think of a body swap between Harrow and Pip resulting in Harrow flailing his arms around wildly and screeching... but again, we know literally nothing about this spell, nor do we actually know anything about Harrow's behavior after Viren leaves his room. Maybe his body sat catatonic on the bed until Runaan came in and shot him. Maybe Pip, being intelligent, was able to maintain the facade—once everyone's in the heat of battle, it would be hard to notice even significant deviations from normal behavior. Even if "Harrow" appeared to fight only halfheartedly, or give up entirely... well, he hasn't been the same since he lost Sarai. Maybe the spell only partially worked, and only half of his soul is inside Pip, with minimal or no influence over the bird body's behavior.
Viren does appear to take some precautions in case Harrow is alive inside Pip. The cage, for one... but he also has nearly all subsequent important conversations outside of his office. Like I said earlier, Pip's cage isn't rendered in the background of any scene, but since he escapes from Viren's office I'm assuming that's where he's been. Even if Pip was just out of frame in every scene in Viren's office post-assassination through end of s2, the only things he's seen are... Viren eating butterflies, and the conversation between Viren and Claudia about the mirror and her side mission to bring the egg back at all costs. He doesn't know about Soren's instructions to murder the boys. He knows about the mirror and Viren's obsession with it (which he could have known before), but he doesn't know about Aaravos. He may know that Viren stole his seal but only if Viren was stupid enough to stamp the letters with it in front of him (which... look, he could be). The only things he's really learned are that a) his sons are alive, and b) Viren lied to him and the egg is alive.
Now, realistically, if we were meant to hang on to the is-Harrow-in-the-bird plot thread because it's going to be significant within the scope of the show... I'd be expecting to see at least one cut to Pip glowering at some point during all these machinations. If it weren't for the mirror and Aaravos, I'd expect Viren to be yelling all his monologuing at Pip, too. But the show does none of that. Instead, the next time we see Pip, we see him peace-ing out of the show for at minimum the next three seasons, and possibly the remaining two, as well. If Harrow's in there... why? Did he go to find Callum and Ezran himself? It's not actually clear that he knows Ezran can understand animals, so it would be reasonable for him to think Viren is his only chance at ever not being a bird again. Maybe he thinks that chance is gone with Viren's arrest and would rather not spend the rest of his life in a cage. Maybe he really isn't in control of the body.
Back to Viren, though: since Pip refuses to demonstrate any behavior that could be taken as distinctly Harrow's, Viren actually has no idea at any point whether Harrow's in there or not. He doesn't know if Harrow lived. He doesn't know if he succeeded or failed. It's a constant reminder that he's almost, but not quite, in control. Almost, but not quite, good enough to achieve what he wants.
It probably drives him absolutely insane.
Did You Think You Were Somehow Getting Out of This Without Me Mentioning Kpp'Ar?
Just kidding, it's finally time to talk about Viren's dream. We've gone two entire seasons and a two-year timeskip without any mention of Harrow or Pip (though those maniacs dropped the fucking snake basket on us as an incidental but obvious prop early in s4), and then suddenly we get punched in the face by Viren's subconscious.
First, though, I do actually need to point something out in the scene with Kpp'Ar. Bear with me, I promise this is relevant.
Viren sealed Kpp'Ar's soul in a coin 12-ish years ago, and the coin has been sitting collecting dust in his secret dungeon for... some amount of that time. Now he opens the door and finds Kpp'Ar standing there, free—and I will note that I don't believe Viren actually knows how to free people from the coins, or whether it can even be done. His reaction is surprise, followed by suspicion and wariness:
When he encounters Harrow—dead—his reaction is horrified shock, which is fair since the last time he entered the room that way there was no surprise body chilling out waiting for him in it:
Then, when Harrow speaks to him, suddenly alive and unharmed, he drops straight into relief:
Some of this is undoubtedly due to the differences between Viren's relationship with Kpp'Ar and his relationship with Harrow. With Kpp'Ar, after that initial moment of confusion, he's absolutely determined to not show a single hint of ignorance or weakness—this is a trick, or a test, and a passing grade in "light verbal sparring with the mentor you're pretty sure you remember betraying" is a thing that is both normal to want and possible to achieve. For Harrow, who he wants so desperately to call him brother, who he walked into this very room ready to die for, before everything went horribly awry—he not only immediately and willingly goes to his knees, he literally prostrates himself.
... I'll give everyone a moment to get all the innuendo and suggestiveness out of their systems, because that's not the point. This time.
What is the point is that Viren's reaction to Harrow isn't disbelief, but relief. Hope. Kpp'Ar is supposed to be in a coin, and Viren immediately questions how he got out. Harrow is supposed to be dead but Viren doesn't give a second thought to how he's not. Fortunately, Harrow helpfully explains:
Fun fact: back in s1, we don't actually see Viren actually taking action against the assassins. We don't even see evidence that he re-entered the room at all—it's only Soren and Claudia who participate in Runaan's capture.
I haven't actually touched a lot on the complex shit going on for Viren, emotionally, throughout all of this—I mentioned it's was probably driving Viren insane over the course of the first two seasons, but let me elaborate. If Viren successfully switched Harrow and Pip, that means Harrow survived... but he expressed his feelings on the proposal in no uncertain terms, and there's a good chance he will literally never forgive Viren. I don't think Viren thought far enough ahead to consider how to get Harrow into a human body again, but I do think he's dragging his feet on it a little because if he can work things to his advantage—unite the Pentarchy against Xadia and follow through on the war Harrow was avoiding—he'll prove to Harrow that he was right all along. Any chance of that flies out the window with Pip at the end of s2.
If the body-switching spell failed, it means Viren essentially killed Harrow himself. That's the reality I think he grows more and more resigned to over the course of s1 and s2, when Pip remains unresponsive. He had no choice but to take the best chance at saving someone he loved—but this time, instead of saving Harrow, he murdered him.
In the dream, Harrow has not only survived, but credits Viren with his survival. He doesn't just dismiss Viren's show of remorse, but makes his own apology to Viren. He calls Viren brother. After an impossibly long nightmare, everything is okay. All is forgiven. Maybe there was nothing to forgive, in the first place. Maybe Viren was right all along.
Then it all turns sinister with the callback to the coin incantation, and we have a sharp return to reality:
The cinematography here treats Pip a lot more like how I would expect him to be treated in s1/s2 if we were meant to know he was actually Harrow. There's focus actually on him, instead of just other characters' reaction to him. He "speaks"—as I noted in another post—in raspy sounds very unlike his songbird chirps from s1. This is absolutely Harrow as Viren actually left him—even if he's not dead, he's in a warped prison of dark magic, a perverse mockery of himself.
Oh wait.
Harrow-who-is-both-human-and-alive was never an option, and what we've got now is mirror images of Harrow-the-dead-human and Harrow-the-live-bird, and they're going to do to Viren what he did to them.
Now, it's not that none of this makes sense if Viren knows for sure that Harrow is in the bird... but it makes a lot less sense and has less emotional resonance. If Viren knows Harrow survived as Pip, he'd be more likely to question Harrow's human form than his survival—the way he does with Kpp'Ar. He might be more guarded, expecting hostility—which, I will note, is what he gets when Pip enters the scene. Instead, because until now he believed that he actually killed Harrow in his attempt to save him, he's so relieved to see Harrow alive that for that one moment he loses all pride and is ready to beg for forgiveness at Harrow's feet.
Since legitimately none of this makes sense if Viren didn't at least attempt to put Harrow in the bird, we're left with Harrow maybe or maybe not alive, Viren having maybe or maybe not been the one to actually kill him (gonna be a fun one with the Runaan context), and a plotline that is definitely not going to be resolved in the remaining two seasons of the show. I'd be kind of surprised if they even did any more setup for it (like Callum/Ezran finding out it's a possibility, or even a hint drop like Runaan being all "it was fucking weird, he just sat there" or something) outside of future supplemental media.
Conclusion
Either Harrow is alive and in the bird, with the future intent being to do a spinoff story The Search-style, or we're in for a huge bummer of a "actually, it was Viren all along who killed Harrow, therefore Runaan is a good guy and we can all be one happy family" pile of absolute bullshit. Yes, they said Harrow's dead. Harrow's body is dead, we knew that all along. There's a note in the artbook that Viren was actually going to rip the shroud off at Harrow's funeral in order to publicly prove it's his body, because that is an extremely normal thing to do.
The show just treats it extremely weirdly because, even as the only person with any chance of knowing, Viren is in the same uncertain boat as the rest of us. (Actually more uncertain than the rest of us, since he's not genre-aware.) Also it's another chance to torment Viren emotionally, and they'd never pass that up.
Thanks for coming to my absolutely ridiculous TED Talk on this topic, I hope this screenshot now does as much psychic damage to you as it does to me:

Breaking Bonds | PJM | Chapter 1
Pair: Fae Jimin x Nymph readerÂ
Summary: Stripped from your own birthright, you suffer at the hands of your people. But after all, you couldn’t blame them. Having enough, you left in the middle of the snowy days but things didn’t go as you planned. Jimin, pulled by an unspeakable force, ventures out into the blizzard to find a body face-first on the ground. Your love and connection is forbidden - looked down upon. But the both of you are willing to try. However, where there are dreams there are prices to pay. How will the both of you push through? Can the both of you do it?
Genre: Strangers to lovers, fantasy au, Jimin is the CROWN PRINCE (I mean-), angst, kidnapping, smut
WC: 2932
The history of the fae and nymphs - elements that used to live together harmoniously. Like the primary and secondary elements of life and magic, the love between faes and nymphs was sacred - so sacred that only royals had the right to arrange a marriage between their children.Â
But hundreds of centuries later, amongst the roots of enmity that were fueled by old grudges and misunderstandings, blew out of proportion and affected many citizens.Â
The dark history between them that started was marked by blood in the ledger books. The first is The Great Rift. The conflicts between faes and nymphs are often referred to in this phrase as the powerful fae kingdom taking lands that were traditionally inhabited by the nymphs. Territorial dispute ignited much hostility and opposition. This therefore caused the lack of resources. Both mystical beings relied on the same natural elements to thrive from the magical essence in their forests.Â
And within these battles of dominance grew something more than just territory but also magical supremacy. Each mystical being possesses its own unique and elemental powers. As the war grew to a larger scale, betrayals were not able to be prevented. A web of alliances and betrayals intermingle with the supernatural races while leading to mutual distrust.Â
The history was marred by not one, not two, but five different wars at different times. Both sides inflicted much suffering on the other. The wars led to untold loss with neither willing to yield. The main lasting repercussions come in, especially in the revised laws that were enacted to prevent any form of interaction or alliance between fae and nymph. Love between individuals of two races was seen as a dangerous threat to the stability of their respective societies.
The history was written in blood and the older generation of both races have a hard time letting go of their prejudices.Â
And here lies the snowstorm.Â
In the middle of the forest, where the snow blasts down like little chilling knives slicing through your skin and a good three feet of snow -
Your kind were the ice nymphs, once the royal family, now stripped of your title and an outcast amongst your kind. Where the fae folk thrived, you ventured - away from the place you once called home, now a barren room barely the size of a storage room. The scars of the Cold War between the nymphs still lingered, leaving the kingdom in the easy grip of the Lyrin fae.
You kind - the ice nymphs - were rare to come about, each one of your veins flows with the power of winter. In the lores, your kind was told to have a beauty that was like a fragile kind of enchantment, with hair as pale as frost, and skin as delicate as the first snowfall.Â
There were only a few times that you have looked in the mirror - countable with five fingers. After your family was stripped of their title, with you accordingly, life was never the same. Your people, with no place to go, lost trust and justice in you.Â
Desperation drove her journey as she yearned to escape the dark shadow of your people’s fall that hung over her head like a knife over the bed. Even with the ice in your veins, that winter night, when the biting frost finally embraced you and hunger gnawed at your core, your strength failed. You had pushed yourself as far as you could but as the sun dipped below the horizon, your body could no longer hold you up, giving in to your exhaustion and malnutrition.Â
Lying beneath the icy canopy, you were a fragile, half-dead being that is an easy hunt for food for predators living around the area. Your eyes swerved back, trying to calculate how far you might have to go back for shelter. But you didn’t know.Â
You had walked without a direction, lost in the depths of the Lyrin forest. Frostbites numbed your limbs and your brain was moving slower from the exhuation. But there it was, amidst the unforgiving cold and darkness, you sensed a presence stirring.Â
Your hazed hearing registered the crunch of footsteps in the snow as your blurry vision sent your brain to somebody standing next to you. Your eyes roll around until you have a clearer picture of who it is. A man with dark hair, brown eyes, and plush lips, dressed in regal attire with a crest of the fae kingdom. Lyrin was one of the biggest fae kingdoms and everybody knows their crests. After all, it was them who led the battles many years ago. It was them that inflicted the harm and loss on your people. It was them that had killed the ruling family back then.Â
Your family.Â
But he wasn’t the one who took the action. No, he was almost as old as you were and then, the both of you were barely kids.Â
Prince Jimin, they called him.Â
The golden sunlight.Â
The crown of Lyrin weighed heavily on his shoulders. He knew the crowning ceremony would be soon, and this winter, he wanted to let go and be just a man until he could no longer. Once he takes over the throne from his father, his duty to serve his country is solely on his shoulders. There was much to do and many things he would like to change, but even as king, these little ideas - as his father likes to call them - had to go through the council.Â
And Jimin knows that the old hags would never approve of it.Â
It went beyond the revised edition of the old laws.Â
To reconcile with the nymphs.Â
Jiminhad ventured into the forest today, going around with no direction, guided purely by an inexplicable force. The kingdom, although a realm of enchantment, was deeply tainted by the darkness of its past. If all was silent enough, one could still hear the shrieks and cries of the souls. The darkness had bred a strong sense of hatred and fear between faes and nymphs. Their mating was now an old tale of forbidden love - a story buried deep in history.Â
As he ventured further into the woods, he stumbled upon the nymph, your frail form half-buried in the snow. Your beauty, even in your weak state, took the breath right out of his lungs. He recognized you as a nymph with your small frame and pale, white hair. But it wasn’t completely white. It shone like the silvers of the moonlight when light reflected off it.Â
But it was when he moved to pick you up that he saw your family’s sigil, now faded from royal to common, that told him - you were no ordinary nymph. As his arms went under the ice, you stirred slightly at the movement. As you opened her eyes, he was completely taken aback by the sheer blue shade of your pupils.Â
Even with one foot into the Underworld, you looked ethereal to him. Jimin was snapped out of his daze when your frostbitten lips whispered a plea for help. In that moment, all history and hatred were forgotten. With fae swiftness, he scooped your fragile state - lighter than air - into his arms and covered you with his coat.Â
Determined to save her, he summoned a warm breeze that melted the frost from your body and sealed you in a cocoon of warmth. Jimin only dared to start running faster to his horse when colour slowly came back to your lips. Ensuring that you were safely tucked in his arms, Jimin ran back to the castle, fighting against death who wanted to take the girl in his arms.Â
As days turned to weeks, weeks turned to months. The little nymph’s life continued to hang in the balance and Jimin was a mess. He made every doctor attend to you, pacing around the bedroom day and night. He had caused an uproar in the kingdom when they found out that their crown prince had brought back a nymph - even more than this one that was from the late royal family - and was nursing her back to health.Â
His father had threatened to strip him of his title if he did not abandon you. But he could not do it. So it started the feud between father and son, neither backing down. Jimin understood that his late grandfather and his father had a feud among the nymphs, had been the ones who executed them and had been the ones to fight at the front lines. They were the ones who brought Lyrin to what it is today - expanded. But as Jimin studied the history of both parties, he felt a certain connection to the nymphs.Â
He did not want to be a ruler where their mystical counterparts would be afraid of them. He did not want to be a ruler like his father - ruling by fear from an iron fist.Â
While doctors attended to you, Jimin watched them with sharp eyes, ensuring that none of the doctors would slip anything into your bloodstream. When nothing helped and your state was only getting worse, Jimin grew more and more anxious. He had sifted through books and hunted down the Old Scripts.
He learned that your name was L/N Y/N, the youngest of the last ruling family. Your father had been killed in the war, your mother led you and your siblings to safety but soon after passed due to the broken mate bond. Your siblings were either caught by his father’s cavalry or died of starvation, leaving only you. Your records were still in the kingdom, seemingly down till two days before he met you. That means that you were active in your own kingdom, at your people’s mercy until you left.
He looked back at where you lay still on the bed.Â
And if he didn’t find you, you would have probably been dead by now.Â
You woke up to the warmth and luxury of a place you had only dreamed of. Your body was still weak and you didn’t know what happened after passing out. Slowly rising to consciousness, you found yourself in a room of blue and white, drapes swinging in the wind. But you registered that the windows weren’t open and the room was cold like… ice?
Winter may be the season but no room was made to stay cold unless the elements of the magicians’ are meant to stay cold.Â
Like you.
You curled your fingertips, feeling the soft, silky sheets beneath them. Trying to view the room from your current position - lying flat on the bed with a head that feels as heavy as bricks - you were taken aback by the sheer language it screams.Â
Royalty.Â
From the materials beneath your body to the furniture displayed, the decorations and architecture of the room, they were all beyond your imagination. You had not stepped into such a room since the battle. As you looked around, you realised the room was not originally made to stay cold. The fireplace seemed to be covered in a layer of dust but the decorations on them were clean.Â
And although you knew that this was not your room, the calming temperature felt just like home. But you had not been in a room like this for a very long time. Distantly, you heard the opening and closing of a door. Your eyes immediately shot in the direction of the sound just to find a man already standing beside the bed.Â
You were immediately broken out of your thoughts when you realised who it was and where exactly you were. You did not need to open the windows to know - you were on enemy territory. The rulers who killed your family. The rulers who brought demise onto your people.Â
But looking at the man, clad in a loose tunic and pants, dark brown hair ruffled in all directions, you couldn’t find yourself to hate him. Even as you knew that he shared the purest blood with the murderer, you knew that he… was just like you.Â
A family’s misdoings do not mean a child’s downfall.Â
One’s choice does not equal the choice of another.Â
You sink deeper into the sheets, holding in your sigh as you close your eyes.Â
“Oh!” Your eyes shot open to see the man right in front of you. “Oh, you’re awake! Oh, finally! Wait - wait - let me call the physicians!”
Your brain couldn’t register his words fast enough before you saw his body move so fast it was just a blurry shade running down the stairs. Or maybe it was just your vision that was a little crusty. Rubbing your eyes as you yawned, you got up from the bed. You wouldn’t like to overstay your stay, especially not in a place where your head was on a bounty.Â
You had left your kingdom only to be stuck in another.Â
Sighing, you looked down to your feet -
Your arms shot to cover your already clothed body. Wait, wait, wait -Â
Your hands patted yourself down. You -Â
You were changed.Â
Your plan to secretly escape was a fail the moment your ears picked up the sound of multiple heavy footsteps coming towards the room. The large doors were banged open, revealing a line of physicians behind the prince.Â
“There! There! I told you, she is awake!”
Squinting at the all-to-cheerful sound that the prince makes, the palm of your hands pressed against your ears.Â
“Careful, Prince. The Lady just woke up, her senses will be sensitive. You must lower your volume, Prince.”
Sheepish eyes shot at you, a guilty smile lifting the corners of his lips. The physicians fussed you back to bed and ran a thorough check of you, reporting back to the prince whenever they found something. Whether it was something healing or something that needs healing. Over the next few weeks, you realise how persistent and petty the prince can get.Â
He would refuse you bites of food if you were to call him by his royal title. He would refuse to help you up from bed, just standing at the corner of the bedpost when you need the restroom, always claiming, “If you aren’t going to help yourself, you don’t get to do your business.”
But you also realise how much he has gone through. As the only child, he was meant to take the throne a couple of weeks before he found you. But he had caused a huge uprising and a big fight with his father. When you were sneaking out one of the nights, Jimin found you during his nightly duties of patrol and whisked you back to the room.Â
Although you had left with the intention of Jimin’s life getting back to normal, he has increased your security so that you won’t have much of a chance to run away again.Â
Keyword: much.Â
You still had your chances and when that came, you took it. You had everything packed and ready, but this time, you left with a note at the bedside table, paired together with a magic-infused healing charm for the man.Â
Safe to say, it was a bad idea.Â
You knew it was the moment you penned down your goodbyes and gave him the charm. But you didn’t have much on you to give him for thanks other than the occasional swirls of magic in his office.Â
Yes, it was a horrible idea - of course it was! You were caught - again.Â
This time, Jimin didn’t just leave you back in the room. He was silent the whole time after he found you. The ride back, up the stairs, and even after the both of you entered the room. You saw the note on the bed.Â
Jimin’s back was to you.Â
“Why - Why would you think that?”
You were taken aback by the tears that streamed down his plum cheeks that you had teasingly squished the past few weeks. Looking down at the note, you felt a pang of… sorrow.
A sorrow that wasn’t yours. It shouldn’t be. “Because it is against the laws.”
“I do not care what the laws claim!”
“I am nobody, Prince. You have a duty to serve your kingdom and its people. I am a princess, stripped of my title, belonging to the very kingdom your father and his father killed through. The very princess that they couldn’t care less before killing off my father on the battlefield.” He couldn’t be yours. He was a prince, deserving of one better than a bond that was looked down upon.Â
“My ancestors can go suck their dicks.”
You pulled a face at the crude language. You knew that he would be insisting - you found out that much about him - and you prepared yourself for a situation like this. But your resolve was already crumbling.Â
“Prince -”
“Stop, stop! I am yours! Please - I beg of you - stop calling me by my title.”
You sucked in a deep breath. “You are more than your titles. But you are also the light of your people. The only heir to the throne and you will not shove it away just because we are bonded. I refuse.”
“I will lay the world down on your feet for you, please. Do not leave me.” His cries hurt you more than knives and ropes splitting your skin raw.Â
“My world is not one you can provide.”
My world is you.Â
But you wouldn’t dare say that as you turned your back to him and walked out of the castle, following your original plan in mind.

The Realm Legal System, 1
All power and authority in the Realm (The Realm and Sundry Holdings of Her Radiance the Scarlet Empress) derives from the Empress. There is no other authority within Her Realms; power is hers and hers alone.
Legally, all land, possessions, crops, beasts, resources, and things of value within the Realm are property of the Empress. At her command, anything and everything must be surrendered, since it is hers to begin with. The Empress has total, unchallengeable, and unquestionable personal authority. It is the Empress' personal and individual responsibility to administer every single dispute among her people, assess and collect all taxes from use of her property, command every single army, and oversee every province's productity.
Of course, this system is impossible in practice. Even the Realm's own legal system cannot maintain this technical façade for long. To deal with the complexity of... actually running a goddamn global empire... the Empress apportions her endless duties among her people.
This system is called Imperial Fiat, and is the core legal structure the Realm uses in the day-to-day. Imperial Fiat is the right of an individual or organization to act on behalf of the Empress as an extension of her authority. In essence, Imperial Fiat is the right to do government or state action as an extension of the Empress' will.
All the Great Houses, for example, hold a fiat to administer their territories by appointing governors and satraps. Judges hold a fiat to render judgement in accordance with the law. The Deliberative holds fiat to produce laws and regulations on matters of little interest to the Empress. Ministries have fiat to enforce the law and create records of proceedings. The most important thing about Imperial Fiat is that it is the Empress' discretion to give and rescind it. With a snap of her fingers, the Empress can revoke any fiat -- as she does when she dismantles a Great House, like Iselsi and Sakeraha long ago.
Fiat is the Empress' to give, and the Empress' to take away.

Glass Onion Meta
because i have too many thoughts and also i want to compare it with knives out but only very vaguely because it’s been a while since i’ve seen the first movie but some of the commentary/analysis i want to make involves comparing the two.
so!
...below the cut because this might get long (and also apologies if this is rambly because it’s just me having thoughts and wanting to get them all out...or at least some of them out).
oh, obviously this includes major spoilers for glass onion and also includes maybe minor spoilers for knives out.
EDITED TO CORRECT AN ERROR RE: WHO STEPS UP FIRST AT THE END.
i think it’s important to start with the themes/point of glass onion being very different from those in knives out. rian got asked in an interview about making movies about rich people who do horrible things, and i think the difference between the two is this: knives out is about rich people who do horrible things, but glass onion is about rich person who does horrible things. this is why the big heart moment in knives out is revealing that marta didn’t kill harlan because she is a good nurse, but what should be the big heart moment in glass onion is not telling someone drowning in guilt that they are, actually, good but the people who were once good now have the strength to turn against their abuser.
in essence, glass onion is the exact opposite of knives out - where the first movie is about saving a singular person done wrong by multiple rich people, the second movie is about saving multiple people being done wrong by a singular rich person.
now - past that general etc. i don’t really want to delve into knives out much, other than to point out that the majority of the cast are rich entitled people who were born into rich and have grown up rich and have their entitlement as the result of that. the only character like that in glass onion is miles, and it’s his corrupting influence - and abuse - that is the heart of my argument, really.
SO.
We need to start with the rest of the family - and yes, I will refer to the core six (Andi, Claire, Lionel, Birdie, Miles, and Duke) as a family because I feel like they are. I think that’s best set up in the first scene in seeing how Lionel, Claire, Birdie, and Duke play off of each other; how Birdie and Lionel have Claire’s speech on the news playing where they’re intended to be paying attention to it (Birdie’s Birdie, so she’s distracted, and Lionel appears to have intended to host a group of people sitting and seeing Claire’s discussion on tv except that he got pulled into a meeting with who I think were probably the other Alpha scientists?); and how Lionel and Claire, as soon as they get the box from Miles, are immediately on the phone with each other, expect Birdie and Duke to show up, and then all four of them are just ribbing on each other good-naturedly the entire time. They are a family. They are a family. And you see that at its best with those four (and particularly, I think, with Lionel, Claire, and Birdie). These six people know each other, and as far as they know, they all love each other (at least prior to everything with Andi and Miles’ dispute re: Alpha, but we’ll get into that). Even more to that point, every year they basically go on a big family vacation that Miles funds, and when they go, they don’t take the rest of their family (Birdie brings Peg because Peg is all of her brain cells and Duke brings Whiskey because Whiskey can get to Miles, but Claire doesn’t bring her husband (or assumed kids) and Duke doesn’t bring his mom, even though he still lives in her basement). This is for them. Their family. Not everyone else.
Anyway.
We need to start with the rest of the family, and more importantly, we need to start with Andi. The movie itself tells us that Andi found the other four first because she saw their potential - a substitute teacher, a washed up model, a YouTuber who couldn’t get off the ground, and Claire who is apparently in her thirties and still running for student council president, maybe I heard that wrong and she was trying for school board head or something, there’s something off there (EDIT: correction re: Nonnie heard clearer than me!) a failed attempt at city council president but they’re all trying to do something with their lives and failing and Andi looks at them and says, hey, there’s something here, something good, and all of us together can get to that something good.
And to Andi’s point, she’s right.
Lionel is more than a substitute teacher; he’s a scientific mind who probably keeps Alpha afloat (after Andi leaves - which means scientifically speaking, he’s probably the closest to her level, but he’s a science guy, not a business guy, which is where Andi probably excels more).
Birdie is more than a washed up model - which sounds like a bit of a stretch until you realize that, yeah, she did create a fashion line and then created an entire sweatpants line. (Like Lionel, she is not business savvy. Birdie gets the raw end of the stick here because she has no brain cells, but she’s not entirely dumb. She knows fashion. She just doesn’t keep track of much else.)
Duke is able to influence millions of people once he finds the right crowd (Twitch and YouTube run differently; what does well on Twitch does not always do well on YouTube and vice-versa; this is one of those things that I’ve heard some of the YouTubers I follow talk about in terms of their attempts on Twitch, not something I know from experience, but Twitch is run differently. It uses a different skill set).
Claire is actually a very skilled and capable politician provided she has the right connections and backing.
They are all very good at what they want to do; they are just missing the connections to do it.
Which is where Miles comes in.
Miles has no skills. The movie calls him an idiot. He steals outright from people. But what Miles has are connections and money, which is what the fam needs. They need a sponsor. Miles becomes their sponsor.
And it’s worth noting that other than Andi, none of them like Miles until he sponsors them. Miles literally buys his way into the fam. (And I think it’s worth noting that Miles does have a certain charisma to him. He’s full of shit. We know he’s full of shit. But he’s so good at redirecting and talking around and using words that are close but not quite the right word that we don’t notice he’s full of shit. That’s how he gets through to Andi, and once he gets through to Andi, that’s how he gets through to the rest of the fam.)
Even Andi depends on Miles’s connections and money to get Alpha off the ground. They’re partners.
And, to an extent, I’d argue they’re the fam parents. Andi brought them all together, she created the fam, she’s their mom. Miles gives them presents and money and introduces them to the rest of the business world; he’s their dad.
Roughly speaking.
And I think in the decade that the fam is together, they probably do think of themselves as a family. Sometimes maybe Miles asks them to do stuff they don’t like, but he also always gets them out of trouble when they fall into something. When Duke makes a bad call and gets banned from Twitch, Miles gets him right back up again. When Birdie makes a bad call and decides to start her sweatpants line, Miles supports her doing it. He helps them out, and he expects them to help him out.
I think while Miles and Andi were together, it’s quite likely that she reined him in. They were partners. They did things together. (She probably would not have supported the sweatshops in Bangladesh, but she was gone by then. She also would not have thrown Birdie under the bus for that because that was on Miles and also she would have known that Birdie wouldn’t know what that means.)
Like - the fam aren’t rich entitled jerks. They’re normal people. People with the potential to do good - great - things. People who, yes, take advantage of Miles’s sponsorship to do those good things. And build their lives around being able to do those things with the sponsorship of their admittedly very rich friend - but it’s not taking advantage because he’s always there to help them and provide for them and offer these things for them. Initially with no strings attached. And then maybe with some strings, but they’re very small strings, and they aren’t really bad things, it’s fine, and Andi’s okay with it, so that’s not really a string, that’s just family helping family.
And then Andi tells Miles no.
Andi, the strongest, the brightest, the best of them, the one who brought them all together, tells Miles no, and he cuts her out of the company founded on her ideas.
Andi is absolutely ruined, and they see Andi get absolutely ruined, and they come to the realization that their friend who has been nothing but a friend is actually not a friend and not only can cut them off but will completely ruin them if they get in his way.
Andi tries to go up against Miles, but by then he’s gotten to them and proven to each of them that he will absolutely destroy them if they try to side with Andi.
At this point, I think for most of them it’s not about the money.
It’s about seeing everything they have done, everything they have tried to do, all of the good they are trying to put into the world - Claire is a governor, she is trying to do so much good for her state, and she wants to do so much more good for her country; Lionel is a scientist, and maybe some of Miles’s ideas are crap, but some of them are genuinely good, and he is the one person who Miles actually sometimes listens to (except on Klear, when he wouldn’t even listen to Andi, why would he ever listen to Lionel? especially when he put all of their money into funding it, it has to work and Miles has always been about finding ideas that work and bringing them into his fold so that he can control them); Birdie doesn’t have any brain cells, so for her this is less about putting good into the world and more about sticking with her fam (we see this at the end, she goes where Lionel and Claire go; Birdie trusts her family so much that she wouldn’t question doing what Miles asks, which is how she ends up in the sweatshop problem (I think Andi is the one who hired Peg because Peg is actually capable at what she does, and I think Miles is the one who suggested Birdie have a secret phone just for communicating with him behind Peg’s back)); and Duke...by this point is mostly a lost cause, but he’s still a mama’s boy (honestly, I think Duke took after Miles, he looked to Miles first and foremost, and he’s the most likely to actually have the influence and money to get out from under Miles if he had enough sponsorship to get there, but Miles is never going to give him that because Miles needs Duke dependent on him) - it’s about seeing all of that completely ripped to shreds and destroyed, not about the money.
They’re not entitled rich people; they are normal people who needed money and connections, who gained money and connections through one singular person, and then realized that one singular person who they thought was their friend really, really was NOT their friend.
And realizing that there was no way out from under his control without losing everything.
And then being stuck.
I think it’s quite possible that if Andi had found the napkin earlier, Lionel and Claire would have sided with her maybe because she would have had actual hard evidence she could stand on, and if Lionel and Claire sided with Andi, Birdie would have followed. Not sure about Duke. Duke’s murky. But without actual physical evidence and proof, it becomes he said; she said, and when dealing with Andi who has already been devastated vs. Miles who even without Alpha has all of that money and connections and influence and could probably still destroy them if they turn on him--
Dad might be an abusive asshole, but if we pretend to like him, if we are his good little children, then maybe he won’t hurt us the way he hurt Mom.
It’s an abusive family relationship.
And once Mom is out of the way, Dad can be worse. Especially because Miles knows that he has the control over them that he wants, especially because that control has been tested and he’s been proven the winner, especially because he has people in place now to do whatever he wants whenever he wants it, all he has to do is threaten them.
Except that Andi finds proof.
Lionel may have been giving Miles a general heads up because Andi didn’t send that email to Miles, she sent it to her family. The people she found. The people she still loved. The people who might come back and join her now that she has actual proof. But Lionel is still under Miles’s employ, and he’s still the person who is supposed to be keeping Miles in check (and failing), and without Andi, he and Claire become the new...not parents, but they’re the oldest children here, they’re the ones closest to what Miles is doing, and they depend on each other to keep each other going.
Helen asks if they’re interested in how Andi’s doing or if they’re interested in the envelope, but the thing of it is that yeah, they’re interested in the envelope because if that holds what they think it does, that gets them out. It isn’t about let’s destroy the envelope to save Miles, it’s let’s talk about this so we can see where to go from here.
Because the additional problem here is that they are all now perjurers because they lied on the witness stand, so if they walk back their testimony, then they are now felons, and I don’t know about you, but I feel like that would at least wreck Claire’s chances at senate (or staying on as governor if she’s not in senate). Like - that seems like it was a fairly public trial, and having to go back and redo things would be an even more public trial, and turning back now would also ruin their reputations, even if it doesn’t ruin them financially or etc. Which is just another thing Miles now has over them.
So of course it’s a we need to talk about this, not because they don’t care about Andi, but because it affects all of them and they need to get this right if they’re going to try and go against Miles with all of his money and connections and influence. Because yeah, Andi could use that and win, but what would be the cost? They need to talk about it.
And all of that weight is there when Helen asks them to side with her, but now also they know that Miles has killed two of them.
Which means if there is another extended trial they also have to worry about whether or not he will try to kill them, too.
And like - now it’s not just reputation, it’s not just the life they have built for themselves, it’s their actual lives - and Duke’s already dead, so he doesn’t have to worry about his mom, but Claire’s got an entire family who Miles could go after and threaten if he wants - and, like, even if they were okay with risking reputation, you are asking them in front of a literal murderer to put their lives on the line to fight him, knowing that he has already murdered the best of them to get his way.
Helen has not dealt with Miles. She’s doing this for Andi. It’s like an outsider telling you how to deal with getting out of an abusive situation and there’s no safe way to do it, you can’t find a safe way to do it, and you certainly don’t agree to it in front of the fucking abuser where he will hear you.
Which is why the heart of the ending has to be when they agree to fight him.
When Claire says I saw the gun.
When Birdie says I saw the napkin.
When they all agree that enough is enough (in this case, enough happens to be turning all of the houses in America into mini Hindenburgs like they just lived through).
When Lionel says I saw Miles driving away after Andi was killed.
The movie starts with these three (and then Duke) and their reactions to getting something from Miles - and it’s most telling in Claire’s, how even though she’s zooming into a news station to talk about her campaign for senate, she’s still looking off to where the package from Miles might be, but it’s telling even in Lionel’s because he’s already trying to cover for Miles, and then there’s that present, and even with Helen, when we think she’s Andi, seeing her just destroy it - the movie starts with the power Miles has over all of them, and it has to end with them trying to break out of that power.
The catharsis isn’t just Miles gets what’s coming to him; it’s these people have finally had enough of the abuse and have decided to try and get out.
And I hope they stick with that, I hope they get out, I hope they reconvene with Helen and fight because Miles is in enough of a vulnerable spot that they can get out, finally. I hope that they are honest about what happened on that island.
...and I hope they are able to rebuild what little family they have left and that they pull Helen into it, if they can.

Run Ghost Run - 14
prev master ao3
John Talks to Lady Gotham. Jason talks to Bruce. They have varying levels of success.
John was over the bat.
He just walked in silence. Com clicking away. No response after no response. Yet the man stayed silent. Looming in the shadows. Hell. It was annoying.
Not to mention Gotham as a whole. How he despised this city. He was very over Gotham, this town really stunk. Curses ran a mock in this city. Death gets trapped and corrupted here.
Only reason they didn’t run amock was due to the city's resident ecto-being lady Gotham. She managed to either absorb those stuck or shoo them out to be others’ problems. Lady Gotham was obsessed with protecting this city.
By all right. Should be in the realm herself.
But no. She got bloody obsessed with Gotham, that was a pain ta realize. Claimed the bloody city as if it was her own. If he didn’t know any better, he’d say she was obsessed with the bats.
The bat.
He could live without him. You can only take so much of the brooding and the arguments about science vs magic. Why did the being have ta choose Gotham? Desperation despair, just why here of all places.
Bloody hell. She don’t even let other entities here. More than one odd fight here and there. Ghost disputes. Ain’t cause damage as she kept the lot from causing any.
She ain’t let squat through. So why come to Gotham of all places? Maybe this guy felt Lady Gotham's presence. Or maybe she reached out to him? Or just completely dumb luck?
Wherever the kid was Lady Gotham would know. Knowin' her got a deal out of it or something.
Granted. Gotham was the ideal place for these entities to hide. Factoring in he could be hiding out. The stench of Gotham would by the time he supposes. Wouldn’t be the first time something tried to hide out here.
As much as the bat disliked the occult, his entire city was crawling with the stuff. Just had to get the kid hope he ain’t dead and go from there. Just had to stop the infinite realm from going all out.
Bloody hell. Yeas. This was just peachy.
“Where’s the kid?”
A grunt. That’s the response he got. He was typing away again. If the world wasn’t on the line he’d be amused. Of all the times for the cold shoulder. It sure wasn’t bloody today. Who knows what condition the entity would be in? Blood blossoms aren't a joke.
The US government. Well, they were a joke. God bless England, it ain’t condemning the world to an apocalypse. He didn’t want to think of the other possibilities they could do. Just had to mess with an entire dimension.
Whoever had the supposed kid was still not responsive.
You’d think at a certain point he’d stop calling. Didn’t he have trackers on everyone or something? Like he’s a detective and all. Trackers just for him.
Hell, he couldn’t even sense any ego signature in the city, well minus Lady Gotham’s. Her ectoplasm was stretched all throughout the town. She was also directing her essence directed at him. Couldn’t feel jack cause of it.
Clearly, not a fan he was in her city.
If anything is here, he wouldn’t know.
Same ain’t true outside of Gotham. Before entering the city boundaries. He felt it, something coming this way. A newly formed ecto entity less than a year old, one beelining it.
It wasn’t a baby ancient or even a world ending in strength. Maybe a scout? That didn’t feel quite right either. Still too young to have any proper training. If it were possible, he’d say it was just forming a core. Which didn’t track.
Those things came premade. They pop into existence with them. No forming happens. A life moved on to the afterlife, not ready to give up or it's somehow too powerful for a normal afterlife. Instantly knew the rules for the realm. Â Instantly knew their powers.
Then deal with the other beings. Fighting to learn their powers all to help the younger ones use them properly. This didn’t track.
That young of a being ain’t supposed to be out and about.
Well, whatever it was would be on Gotham’s doorstep soon.
Time was not their friend. When was it?
Lady Gotham decided to push more of her ectoplasm toward him. Great.
Bloody hell. He was gonna have to deal with Lady Gotham. The only way to find this entity. Hell. Maybe he’ll get lucky, and she’ll spill.
She didn’t like him, and he didn’t like her.
Having all your thoughts shared made it awfully tricky to get a loophole in any deal. Ugh. Oh well. He’d figure it out. If the bat was no help. He’d just go around the guy. Unless he finally got an answer.
Another failed call.
Screw it.
He wasn’t bound to the bat.
“I’m out. Follow my own hunch. Pester lady Gotham. She got ta be hiding him.”
Only a grunt. The guy must be stuck in his phone. Whoever had the kid aint talking? He won't waste time waiting. Best to go hunt down Lady Gotham. He knows her tricks and knows better than to make any deals. He should be able to get at least something out of her, joint feelings and all. Just had to use that to his advantage.
He’s done it before.
Now to deal with Lady Gotham. Great. Well… she agreed to meet with him. Even before he sent out a request to her. Her ecto signature hit him like a brick of walls. He allowed the void to take him.
What business do you have here John could feel her anger.
Let an ecto being here anytime recently.
Protectiveness hit him.
What business do you have with the prince?
Dread filled the channel between them.
F*ck
What business do you have with the prince?
Blood blossoms were injected into him. He needs help don’t he?
He Is with my favorite knight. Any human in possession of these blossoms will be dealt with. No more will be permitted within his presence. He is under my protection now.
Gotta be affecting him. If the kids a royal and I can’t feel it. It’s bad. Not even you could hide his signature alone.
There was some form of discomfort creeping in between them.
Kid needs help.
As long as you are working with Batman. You arrived with him. Unlike normal. I will not help. The deal I have stricken will remain unbroken. That holds the prince to remain under my protection. Until Gotham is unsafe he is suck. I shan’t lead my knight to him.
I’ll ditch the bat. That ain’t a problem.
Then we shall strike our own deal
****
The kid was out. No time like the present to deal with Bruce.
“What”. Bruce was lucky Jason could go outside via the window. He would not risk waking that kid up. Only reason he was willing to talk. Well. Willing was a strong word. He just needs information, to find out what is going on. Maybe get the kid's parents' name out of the conversation.
Purely for educational reasons, no other reason.
Wouldn’t know how much he’d get until he dealt with the man.
Bruce was just as stubborn as him.
Might as well make this as quick as he could.
“I just got that kid into a bed. Dealt with his injuries. Kids lucky he didn’t bleed out jumping off a roof. Might I remind you to avoid you guys? Whatever you need, make it quick.”?
“This is serio-“
“Kid was vivisected. Know that? Parents no less. If you have info about his health or well-being I’ll take it, show up here and we bounce. Kid and I quote specifically said no cops or those weird vigilantes. I’ll take my chances.”
“He was poisoned by something called blood blossoms; Constantine says they're deadly to ecto-entities.”
“You have a cure” Bruce better have some solutions or something. He will not let this kid die on him.
“Constantine said he’d have to look” Bruce’s voice was more frustrated than normal. Most of been trying to deal with this for a while.
The kid needed treatment and the blood blossom thing had to be a recent discovery. None of the attempts to contact him had been as separate as the last few.
“That ain’t gonna work, that kids running if someone shows up here. I’ve managed to get him some help by being his best option. We’re both guilty of crimes ya know.”
“He needs help you can’t give”.
“I’ve done more than your merry band. They scared him off a roof. That could have been fatal” from what he’d gathered. It was the “blood” son who caused that mess. Dick just got stuck with the blame.
“Danny is a teen who is terrified. Having someone come around ain’t gonna help.
That kid certainly won’t trust a drunk in a trench coat. He doesn’t even trust me; he just knows I ain’t turning him in. I only know what I know cause he accidentally spilled when I was patching the kid up. Not very tight-lipped when pretending he is fine.
I’ve barely managed to get him any medical treatment. It’s not a pretty sight. If that kid bolts and these stitches pop again, he very well could bleed out. Blood blossoms aside.
No way you’ll be able to convince him to go with you willingly nor let anyone near him. Couldn’t John just use his magic or whatnot to work just close by”?
“Hm”
“Did Constantine ditch the big bad bay?” Jason could find the humor in that even given the situation. So they had to figure out some way to get this handled.
Getting him to agree to let a British English man come over. That ain’t happening. Not like that. Not when the kid likely has some of his powers back.
But.
Maybe. Instead of a random British man, he could bring up an older British man. John would have to figure out lurking from a distance, he could lurk around while Alfred was in the apartment. Kid clocked him when he was on the roof. Couldn’t just have John show up to sneak about. What if he got sensed out as well?
Bruce and them were a no-go. Too public or too suspicious.
Use Alfred. Lie and say he knows a guy. Not a doctor just an older man who offered help. More luck with him then the drunk. Then he’d at least get better medical attention. He could handle this stuff with no problem. He was most certainly not on Alfred’s level.
“Just maybe I could convince him to let Agent A stop by.
Not ideal. But just maybe it could work. Have John show up at the same time. Let him feel around.
The ectoplasm in the vial seemed to help the kid out. Have one of the bats come and grab it. They can pass that off to John for now.
That’s the only way any of this will work. The kid has powers and all. For now, it’s my only offer.”
Crash bang
That was coming from inside the apartment. Oh no. It’s been like 8 minutes did he wake up? Did he hear any of this? Was it actually super hearing?
“What was tha-“
“Gotta go”
“Don’t-“ Jason hung up mid-sentence. He had to see what’s up. Maybe the kid just tried to leave again and failed. Knocked over the side table or something.
Getting back into the apartment Just in time to see Danny's panic and fear evident in his eye bolting. Once again going intangible right before his eyes. Backpack in hand.
F*ck.

The Heart of the Matter Ch.2 (part 4)

All ghostkind speaks of Pariah Dark in hushed whispers.
He is formally titled the King of All Ghosts or High King of the Infinite Realms.
His subjects have different titles for him.
The Tyrant King, they call him.
Core-crusher.
Thrall-keeper.
The last title manages to be the most horrifying of them all.
A skeletal army stands at his beck-and-call, unable to do anything else.
They weren’t always skeletons.
A few millennia into his reign, he discovered something new to do with his enemies.
Instead of crushing their cores, he took to changing them.
Binding them.
Controlling them.
He reduced thousands to will-less slaves who could do naught but scream inside their own minds while their bodies obeyed his slightest whim.
To fall in battle against Pariah Dark was to lose one’s very form, to lose one’s freewill.
A fate worse than destruction.
And when the Tyrant King is finally sealed away by the Ancients, ghostkind rejoices.
Nature abhors a vacuum.
The position of High King of the Infinite Realms is necessary, and not just to keep order among the various afterlives that exist therein - though that is incredibly important.
Beyond even that, the High King is the humming core of the zone itself, maintaining the veil between realms and ensuring the safety of both worlds.
Ghosts are meant to pass into the land of the dead, some souls must return to the land of the living, the cycle marches on.
Doors must open, but they must also close.
The living and the dead are meant to remain separate.
Pariah Dark lay sleeping in his sarcophagus.
Nature abhors a vacuum.
The crown has only passed down twice, both times by combat.
Legend has it that the first High King was the will of the zone given form.
It never sought to rule, a simple little thing that flitted about closing stable portals down, opening temporary portals for new ghosts, and shepherding fading spirits to the Zone’s heart for their soon-to-be return to the cycle.
Always with the same emotionless expression.
Ghosts sought it out for access to the human realm - which it sometimes granted - or as a third-party in disputes - but it did not speak.
Already, war and chaos had crept into the once-peaceful realm. As the number of dead increased, so too did the infighting.
Friendly combat was one thing - being dead, there was little true harm that could befall them - but things escalated far beyond that point as the collective beliefs of the living bloomed gods and devils into existence, all howling after whatever power they could obtain and more often than not butting heads in the process.
Not that the ghosts of the dead hadn’t already begun seeking that same kind of power for themselves, but the added structural divisions only managed to escalate hostilities.
The second king was one of the first sapient beings to die, and had been dead long enough to see those first peaceful centuries.
He wept at its loss, at the blooming rot of terror and violence.
And when he heard of the ghost referred to as High King only half in jest? He sought it out.
Many had challenged the being before, seeking to subjugate it for on-demand access to the living world or simply to claim the title of High King formally for themselves.
All of them failed.
The to-be second High King did not.
When he looked upon the first and its title he saw more than the potential for power.
He saw the potential for peace.
He could become that mediator that was so badly needed and keep the zone stable all at once.
He rallied his once-fading will, trained his power, and sought the being out.
And so the second High King fought the first and claimed his victory. But there was no core to be found when he reached into his enemies’ chest.
It is said that the moment the second High King drove his hand into the chest of the first, the being’s expression changed for the first and final time: it smiled.
Then, in a flash of light, the being was gone, a crown bathed in green fire floating in its place above the new king’s hand and flooding him with power he’d never imagined.
The second High King of the Infinite Realms brought about the return of the peace he had so sorely missed, bringing stability to the land of the dead.
The title itself became formal and true; countless kings of countless factions challenged his powers and his claim, and countless kings bent the knee.
Some tried to steal the newly named Crown of Fire, but it never changed the outcome and it always returned itself to float above the High King’s head.
They could have their factions, but fighting decreased with the newly available mediation option - and the fact that the new king would put an end to fights and mediate them anyway, less favorably for those who started it since they didn’t seek his council of their own volition.
Nothing lasts forever.
A member of an ancient race on a planet called Aik’lan dies and becomes a ghost named Pariah Dark.
He is dead for barely more than a century when he grinds the second king’s core to dust between his hands.
When he places the Crown of Fire on his own head, it stays.
He is power-hungry. The land of the dead alone does not satisfy him. He hungers to return to the land of the living as a conqueror, to become the ruler of All Things.
He starts as a tyrant and a core-crusher.
He only grows worse with time.
The second king’s right hand ghost swore loyalty to the crown, but one can only tolerate so much. They finally lash out, enraged, when Pariah attacks the last king’s closest friend.
Pariah has done enough research by now; he rips their core from their chest and mounts them on a ring that feeds the would-be usurper's power straight to him in a sick perversion of the first king's legacy.
It is eventually named the Ring of Rage, for the constant, spitting fury that leaches into the air around it whenever it lies on the High King’s finger (always).
Pariah’s rule is as dark as his namesake.
The Ancients lock him away as a group, and the crown refuses to remain outside of the sarcophagus.
The crown is passed down by combat.
There is no High King.
Nature abhors a vacuum.
No one saw Pariah coming.
Not even Clockwork - so young, then - lost as he was in admiring all the different paths reality could take, missing the poison at the river’s source in favor of all the lush, winding branches.
He could have swam upstream, of course - when he finally noticed the change in kings and the monstrousness of the new one - could have changed the past to save the future.
But the second king only ever gave him a single order.
“Never interfere with that which has come to pass, Clockwork. Learn from it, but look only to the future, and make your mark on the world that will be rather than the world that was, lest you drive yourself mad in pursuit of an imagined perfection and grind the world to a standstill.”
He held those words close to his core as he watched Pariah Dark’s past, present, and - most importantly - his future.
Clockwork reaches out to the other ancients, and Pariah Dark is locked away.
He is not defeated.
The High King sleeps, and the Infinite Realms turn on without him.
But Nature abhors a vacuum.
The Observants were originally historians, marking time as it passed them by.
When Pariah Dark is sealed away they turn their many eyes to the future.
Clockwork sees too much, they agree. He is too unfocused.
Let him lose himself in his possibilities; they will be there to watch what shall be and to rouse him from his wanderings when he is needed to avoid that which should not be.
It doesn’t take long for the Observants to develop a taste for power.
In the absence of a high king, lower-kings and faction leaders seek out the Observants for mediation - after all, what better stand-in than the council that even an Ancient would obey?
The Observants grow used to control.
It isn’t difficult to hide their own actions when they make so obvious their refusal to act.
They mediate discussions, yes. They observe.
But whenever something requires action, they always seek out Clockwork.
No one suspects the growing collection of dormant cores hidden away in their shared lair. Their dissenters disappear - for all anyone knows they just got sick of arguing and went back to their lairs.
A small abuse of their future knowledge has dissenters-to-be taken out before they can appear.
By the time Clockwork discovers their actions they have him trapped in a web of contracts he can’t escape without ending up as another dormant core in their collection.
He spends the next hundred thousand subjective years reviewing as far into the most likely futures as he can, sick of being blindsided with nightmarish outcomes that he failed to anticipate and determined to find every crack in the collar he unthinkingly wrapped around his own throat.
The Observants find a possible future that ends in their cores being crushed not a thousand years out - their little collection won’t stay hidden forever if it stays in their lair. They need somewhere to put it.
Then they remember the Oan.
A living species had once found its way into the land of the dead.
The Oan, they’d called themselves: a species seeking to create an interstellar peacekeeping organization to manage their ever-growing universe.
They’d been seeking an energy source for the framework they’d made - which unfortunately demanded more resources to power than they were capable of providing.
They had sought to bargain with Pariah Dark, hearing tell of his crown and ring after a short time in the Zone, and too blinded by the potential to acknowledge the horror inherent in the tales.
Pariah Dark is not a bargaining kind of ghost. He is a possessive one.
He could not deny how useful having a group of combatants in the living world would be, but why bother bargaining when they needed him and he did not truly need them? What did they have that he wanted?
He would give them their power source in exchange for absolute obedience, signed away and promised in the form of gifting him their souls.
He would accept nothing less than complete and utter servitude.
But the Oan sought peace, and Pariah Dark’s warfaring ways were made clear in short order.
Of the five Oan that entered the land of the dead, only one left.
Pariah Dark butchered four of the Oan down to their very just-forming cores and allowed the last to flee with their injuries.
Let the Oan learn to fear and respect The King of All Ghosts, a being able to kill that which cannot be killed.
The Observants have a taste for power, but they are willing to make compromises - both to hide their indiscretions and to obtain a foothold in the human world.
The Observants use their collective power to reverse-summon one of themselves to where the Oans had first entered the Zone from, bearing news of Pariah Dark’s defeat and an offer of peace and alliance.
The Oans, still unsuccessfully hunting for either a power source or a successful alternative, take the news of their species’ personal boogeyman with relief and the offer of alliance and energy with glee.
The Oans get their peacekeepers, the Observants get a foothold in the living world, and the collection of cores disappears from the Observants’ lair.
3 billion years later, Pariah Dark is freed from his slumber to wreak havoc on the Ghost Zone and the human world.
Danny Phantom’s allies stand against Pariah Dark’s reawakened thrall army, and Phantom stands alone against the Ghost King.
Pariah Dark formally accepts the challenge - he and his crown and ring against Phantom and his little suit.
Pride cometh before the fall, and fall Pariah does - right back into his slumber.
Phantom alone forces Pariah Dark back into the Sarcophagus of Forever Sleep and holds it shut long enough for one of his own to lock it shut - as much as he will hate that Vlad was considered anything of his, even for the purposes of a fight (though he’ll find it funny that Vlad is painted as a pawn in the battle despite him considering Danny to be one at the time).
The crown does not go to him.
A child-ghost has never defeated a king before. When nothing happens they think, perhaps, it didn’t count.
The High King still sleeps in his sarcophagus, they assume.
But the crown does not go to the sarcophagus either, unmoving. Waiting.
Clockwork waits.
Danny Phantom’s core reaches maturity the day after he turns 18, on the fourth anniversary of his death.
Nearby ghosts watch in shock as the Crown of Fire races through the Zone.
It ends its merry flight atop Danny Fenton’s head, arriving at the exact second of his death, crown passed for the third time.
Danny Phantom is crowned High King of the Infinite Realms at age 18 and formally coronated two months later.
The Observants drown him in backlogged paperwork to hide their indiscretions.
Clockwork is unable to speak on the matter without an inciting incident or a direct question, bound as he is.
Two years later Hal Jordan locks eyes with Jason Todd, and Clockwork smiles and requests an audience with The Ghost King.

"[G]ender identity is a performative accomplishment compelled by social sanction and taboo. In its very character as performative resides the possibility of contesting its reified status."
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Feminist theory has often been critical of naturalistic explanations of sex and sexuality that assume that the meaning of women's social existence can be derived from some fact of their physiology. In distinguishing sex from gender, feminist theorists have disputed causal explanations that assume that sex dictates or necessitates certain social meanings for women's experience. Phenomenological theories of human embodiment have also been concerned to distinguish between the various physiological and biological causalities that structure bodily existence and the meanings that embodied existence assumes in the context of lived experience. In Merleau-Ponty's reflections in The Phenomenologyof Perceptionon "the body in its sexual being," he takes issue with such accounts of bodily experience and claims that the body is "an historical idea" rather than "a natural species." Significantly, it is this claim that Simone de Beauvoir cites in TheSecondSex when she sets the stage for her claim that "woman," and by extension, any gender, is an historical situation rather than a natural fact.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
When Beauvoir claims that 'woman' is a historical idea and not a natural fact, she clearly underscores the distinction between sex, as biological facticity, and gender, as the culturalinterpretation or signification of that facticity. To be female is, according to that distinction, a facticity which has no meaning, but to be a woman is to have becomea woman, to compel the body to conform to an historical idea of 'woman,' to induce the body to become a cultural sign, to materialize oneself in obedience to an historically delimited possibility, and to do this as a sustained and repeated corporeal project. The notion of a 'project', however, suggests the originating force of a radical will, and because gender is a project which has cultural survival as its end, the term 'strategy' better suggests the situation of duress under which gender performance always and variously occurs. Hence, as a strategy of survival, gender is a performance with clearly punitive consequences. Discrete genders are part of what 'humanizes' individuals within contemporary culture; indeed, those who fail to do their gender right are regularly punished. Because there is neither an 'essence' that gender expresses or externalizes nor an objective ideal to which gender aspires; because gender is not a fact, the various acts of gender creates the idea of gender, and without those acts, there would be no gender at all. Gender is, thus, a construction that regularly conceals its genesis. The tacit collective agreement to perform, produce, and sustain discrete and polar genders as cultural fictions is obscured by the credibility of its own production. The authors of gender become entranced by their own fictions whereby the construction compels one's belief in its necessity and naturalness. The historical possibilities materialized through various corporeal styles are nothing other than those punitively regulated cultural fictions that are alternately embodied and disguised under duress.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Gender reality is performative which means, quite simply, that it is real only to the extent that it is performed. It seems fair to say that certain kinds of acts are usually interpreted as expressive of a gender core or identity, and that these acts either conform to an expected gender identity or contest that expectation in some way. That expectation, in turn, is based upon the perception of sex, where sex is understood to be the discrete and factic datum of primary sexual characteristics. This implicit and popular theory of acts and gestures as expressiveof gender suggests that gender itself is something prior to the various acts, postures, and gestures by which it is dramatized and known; indeed, gender appears to the popular imagination as a substantial core which might well be understood as the spiritual or psychological correlate of biological sex.12 If gender attributes, however, are not expressive but performative, then these attributes effectively constitute the identity they are said to express or reveal. The distinction between expression and performativeness is quite crucial, for if gender attributes and acts, the various ways in which a body shows or produces its cultural signification, are performative, then there is no preexisting identity by which an act or attribute might be measured; there would be no true or false, real or distorted acts of gender, and the postulation of a true gender identity would be revealed as a regulatory fiction. That gender reality is created through sustained social performances means that the very notions of an essential sex, a true or abiding masculinity or femininity, are also constituted as part of the strategy by which the performative aspect of gender is concealed.

Top Reasons to Choose an Employer of Record in the UAE for Your Business
As businesses increasingly look to expand their operations internationally, navigating the complexities of local employment laws can be daunting. In the UAE, especially in Dubai, one effective solution is partnering with an Employer of Record (EOR). This approach not only simplifies the hiring process but also offers several key advantages. Here are the top reasons why you should consider an EOR in the UAE for your business.
1. Simplified Compliance with Local Regulations
One of the biggest challenges for businesses in the UAE is navigating the complex labor laws and regulations. An Employer of Record in Dubai helps you stay compliant with all local employment regulations, including labor contracts, payroll processing, and termination procedures. This reduces the risk of legal issues and ensures that your business adheres to all necessary guidelines.
2. Faster Hiring Process
Establishing a legal entity in the UAE can be a lengthy and complicated process. By utilizing an EOR in the UAE, you can significantly speed up your hiring timeline. The EOR already has the infrastructure in place, allowing you to onboard employees quickly without the administrative burden of setting up a new entity. This is especially beneficial in Dubai’s competitive job market, where time is often of the essence.
3. Cost-Effective Solution
While hiring locally might seem like the straightforward choice, the costs associated with setting up a legal entity can quickly add up. With an employer of record UAE, you can avoid these initial costs and ongoing administrative expenses. EORs typically handle payroll, benefits, and compliance costs, providing a more predictable budgeting process for your business.
4. Access to Local Talent
Dubai is home to a diverse pool of talent from around the world. An EOR in Dubai allows you to tap into this talent without the complications of direct employment. This is particularly advantageous for businesses looking to hire specialized skills or expertise that may not be readily available in their home country.
5. Focus on Core Business Activities
By outsourcing employment-related tasks to an EOR, your team can focus on core business activities instead of getting bogged down by administrative work. This allows your company to operate more efficiently and concentrate on growth and development rather than compliance issues.
6. Scalability and Flexibility
As your business grows, you may need to scale your workforce quickly. Partnering with an employer of record Dubai provides the flexibility to adjust your workforce according to market demands without the hassle of re-negotiating contracts or dealing with layoffs. This agility is crucial in today’s fast-paced business environment.
7. Risk Mitigation
Working with an EOR helps mitigate various risks associated with employment in a foreign country. From navigating visa and residency requirements to managing employee disputes, an EOR can handle these complexities, allowing you to focus on your business objectives without the added stress.
8. Enhanced Employee Experience
EORs often provide better benefits and support for employees, including health insurance, retirement plans, and other perks. This enhances the overall employee experience, which can lead to higher retention rates and a more motivated workforce.
Conclusion
Choosing to work with an Employer of Record in the UAE is a strategic move that can significantly benefit your business. From simplifying compliance and speeding up the hiring process to providing access to local talent and reducing costs, the advantages are clear. Whether you're looking to expand in Dubai or across the UAE, an EOR can serve as a valuable partner in your growth journey. Embrace the opportunities that come with working with an EOR, and position your business for success in one of the world's most dynamic markets.

Bitcoin Core Developers Face New Legal Challenge from Craig Wright
Key Points
Craig Wright, claiming to be Satoshi Nakamoto, initiates a new lawsuit against Bitcoin Core developers.
Wright alleges that changes to Bitcoin’s original features have caused confusion and misled the public.
Craig Wright, an Australian computer scientist who continues to assert he is the creator of Bitcoin, has once again sought legal recourse. In his latest legal action, Wright has brought a lawsuit against Bitcoin Core developers, including Square Up Europe Limited, a subsidiary of Jack Dorsey’s Block.
Wright’s Allegations
The lawsuit was filed in London’s Chancery Division of the High Court. Wright alleges that the defendants have changed Bitcoin’s original features through the implementation of the Taproot upgrade and Segregated Witness (SegWit). According to Wright, these changes deviate from Bitcoin’s original vision.
Wright, who claims to be Satoshi Nakamoto, believes that the modifications to the Bitcoin blockchain have caused confusion and misled the public into thinking that Bitcoin retains its original attributes. He asserts that these changes undermine the essence of what Satoshi Nakamoto originally designed.
In response, Wright is seeking the difference in market value between Bitcoin and Bitcoin Satoshi’s Vision (BSV), the digital asset he claims is the true continuation of the original Bitcoin protocol. At the time of the filing, the disparity in value led Wright to pursue a claim of $1.18 billion in damages.
Wright’s Legal History
Wright is no stranger to the courtroom. In a previous lawsuit against Bitcoin.Org’s “Cøbra”, he claimed copyright infringement of the Bitcoin whitepaper, which he says he authored. However, his evidence was deemed insufficient to establish his claim to being the original creator of Bitcoin. Despite this, Wright continued to file legal actions claiming to be the creator of the Bitcoin blockchain. This led the court to ban him from filing more litigation relating to Satoshi Nakamoto’s identity.
Despite the court’s order, Wright is back in court arguing that Bitcoin Satoshi’s Vision (BSV) is the true version of the cryptocurrency originally designed by Satoshi Nakamoto.
In 2022, Wright failed to prove his claim to be Satoshi Nakamoto during a legal dispute with Magnus Granath, a prominent Bitcoin advocate known as “Hodlonaut”. Wright sued Granath after he called him a “scammer” in a series of tweets in 2019. However, a Norwegian court ruled Granath’s comments were fair given the context of Wright’s public statements.
During the case, Wright was asked to prove his identity as Satoshi Nakamoto by signing a message using the private key associated with Bitcoin’s genesis block. As with previous attempts to prove his claim, Wright was unable to do so, later stating that he had destroyed the hard drive containing the secret phrase to the wallet.

Understanding the Ripeness of a Legal Case: What You Need to Know
In the realm of legal disputes, one concept that frequently arises is the ripeness of a case. While not as commonly discussed outside the legal community as topics like standing or jurisdiction, ripeness plays a crucial role in determining whether a court will hear a case. It ensures that courts only decide disputes that are sufficiently developed to warrant judicial intervention.
In this article, we will delve into the meaning of ripeness in legal terms, why it matters, and how it affects the progression of cases through the judicial system.
Ripeness in Legal Context: A Detailed Exploration
The legal doctrine of ripeness is essential for maintaining the efficiency and purpose of the judicial system. Its primary function is to prevent courts from becoming involved in theoretical, speculative, or abstract disputes. Instead, ripeness ensures that courts are reserved for controversies that require immediate judicial resolution, thereby upholding judicial economy and the principles of fairness. What Does Ripeness Mean? At its core, ripeness refers to whether a case is sufficiently mature for court adjudication. In essence, courts avoid entertaining cases where the legal dispute has not yet fully materialized or where the outcome hinges on uncertain or hypothetical future events. For a case to be ripe, it must meet the threshold of being a concrete, present dispute. The facts surrounding the case need to be fully developed, and there must be an identifiable injury or harm. Courts are reluctant to intervene when the issues remain unclear, speculative, or contingent upon events that may or may not occur. The doctrine is especially important in cases where plaintiffs seek to challenge governmental actions, administrative regulations, or future contractual breaches. If a law or regulation has not yet been enforced, or a party has not yet breached a contract, the dispute may lack the immediacy required for a legal remedy. Why Courts Avoid Hypothetical Cases The principle of ripeness stems from the broader judicial philosophy that courts should not issue advisory opinions. In many legal systems, particularly under the U.S. Constitution, courts are limited to hearing actual "cases or controversies," which means they can only rule on real, live disputes where parties have a vested interest in the outcome. Courts avoid becoming entangled in abstract or premature matters for several reasons: - Judicial Economy: Courts are already burdened with an overwhelming number of cases, and focusing on unresolved or hypothetical issues wastes valuable time and resources. Ripeness ensures that judicial attention is directed to disputes that are ready for resolution. - Separation of Powers: In many legal systems, the judiciary is one of three branches of government, and ripeness helps maintain boundaries between the judiciary and other branches, particularly the executive and legislative branches. By ensuring that courts only intervene in actual disputes, ripeness prevents them from interfering with ongoing governmental or administrative processes prematurely. - Fairness to Parties: Ripeness also protects litigants from unnecessary litigation and uncertainty. If a dispute is not yet fully developed, parties may be dragged into court over matters that may never come to pass. This safeguards individuals and entities from the burden of litigation over hypothetical injuries. The Two-Pronged Test for Ripeness Courts employ a two-pronged test to determine whether a case is ripe for judicial review. This test consists of two essential elements: fitness for judicial decision and hardship to the parties. Both prongs must generally be satisfied for a case to move forward in the judicial process. 1. Fitness for Judicial Decision The first prong of the ripeness test—fitness for judicial decision—examines whether the legal issues are sufficiently developed and appropriate for court adjudication. Courts will assess whether the facts of the case are clear, well-established, and whether the legal question is framed in a way that enables a court to render a meaningful decision. Here’s how courts approach this prong: - Clear Factual Basis: The case should be grounded in concrete facts, not speculative scenarios. Courts avoid deciding cases based on hypothetical or uncertain events. For example, if a business is challenging a law that hasn’t been enforced yet, the court may determine that the case isn’t ripe because the actual impact of the law remains speculative. - Finality of Action: Courts will consider whether the action being challenged is final and definitive. In administrative law, for instance, the ripeness doctrine often requires that a government agency has completed its decision-making process before a case can be heard. If a party is challenging an incomplete or provisional decision, the case may be dismissed as unripe. - Legal Certainty: The legal question should not hinge on future events. If the issue at hand requires further factual development or depends on conditions that have not yet occurred, the case may be considered unripe. Example: In Toilet Goods Ass’n v. Gardner (1967), the U.S. Supreme Court found that a regulation allowing government inspectors to suspend certification of manufacturers was unripe for judicial review because no suspension had yet occurred. The dispute lacked the factual context necessary to evaluate the consequences of the regulation. 2. Hardship to the Parties The second prong—hardship to the parties—assesses whether the parties involved in the case would face significant harm or hardship if the court declines to hear the case immediately. If postponing a ruling would cause tangible, real-world harm, the court is more likely to find the case ripe. Courts evaluate hardship based on several factors: - Immediacy of Harm: The potential harm must be immediate and not speculative. If delaying the case will cause significant financial losses, harm to reputation, or other material damage, this weighs in favor of the case being ripe. - Burden of Uncertainty: Courts consider whether the parties are suffering from ongoing uncertainty due to the unresolved issue. For example, businesses facing uncertain regulatory environments may find themselves unable to plan or operate effectively if a law is being applied inconsistently or vaguely. This uncertainty can constitute a form of hardship, compelling the court to act. - Irreparable Harm: In cases where the harm cannot be undone (e.g., loss of constitutional rights, environmental damage), courts are more likely to find the issue ripe. If waiting to adjudicate would result in irreversible consequences, this can tilt the balance toward judicial intervention. Example: In Abbott Laboratories v. Gardner (1967), the Supreme Court held that a case challenging FDA regulations was ripe, even though the regulations had not yet been enforced. The court reasoned that the plaintiffs faced significant economic hardship because they would need to comply with costly labeling requirements immediately, or risk severe penalties if they didn’t. Ripeness in Practice In practice, ripeness often arises in cases involving challenges to governmental regulations, contractual disputes, and constitutional rights. Courts will scrutinize the factual development of the case, and even if a claim involves substantial legal questions, it will be dismissed if it is not yet ripe for resolution. Consider regulatory cases: if a business or individual is challenging a new regulation, the court must evaluate whether the regulation has been enforced or whether the impact is still theoretical. Similarly, in contract law, a party must usually wait until a breach has occurred or is imminent before bringing the issue to court. Why Ripeness is Vital in Legal Strategy Understanding ripeness is key for both litigants and attorneys. A case brought prematurely risks being dismissed, which not only delays the resolution of the issue but may also lead to unnecessary legal expenses and efforts. Conversely, a well-timed case ensures that the court is able to provide a meaningful remedy based on fully developed facts. Before bringing a case to court, it’s important to assess whether the dispute meets the two-pronged test for ripeness. By ensuring that the case is both fit for judicial decision and involves significant hardship to the parties, litigants can maximize their chances of obtaining a favorable outcome in court. By focusing on these core principles and the two-pronged test, this expanded discussion provides a more thorough understanding of the doctrine of ripeness and its critical importance in legal proceedings. Ripeness vs. Mootness: What’s the Difference? It is easy to confuse ripeness with mootness, as both doctrines concern the timing of legal disputes. However, while ripeness deals with cases that are brought too early, mootness addresses those that are brought too late. A case becomes moot if the underlying issue has already been resolved or if changes in circumstances make a judicial ruling unnecessary. For example, if the government rescinds a regulation that a plaintiff is challenging, the case may be considered moot. On the other hand, ripeness focuses on ensuring that a dispute is sufficiently mature and fully formed before a court can address it. Examples of Ripeness in Legal Cases To better understand the concept of ripeness, let's look at some examples: - Regulatory Challenges: Suppose a company is challenging a newly passed environmental regulation, but the law has not yet been enforced or applied to the company’s operations. In this case, the court may find the challenge unripe because the regulatory impact is speculative and not yet concrete. - Contract Disputes: In a breach of contract case, if one party threatens to breach the agreement but has not yet done so, the court might find that the dispute is unripe. The threat alone may not be sufficient to constitute a fully developed legal issue. - Zoning Laws: A homeowner may wish to challenge a zoning ordinance that could potentially affect their property in the future. However, unless the ordinance has been enforced in a way that causes a direct and immediate injury, the court may dismiss the case as unripe. Why Ripeness Matters in the Legal Process The ripeness doctrine serves several important purposes in the legal system: - Prevents Premature Litigation: By dismissing cases that are brought too early, courts avoid entangling themselves in hypothetical disputes that may never materialize. - Conserves Judicial Resources: Courts are inundated with cases, and the ripeness requirement helps prioritize disputes that are ready for resolution over those that are speculative or still developing. - Protects Against Unnecessary Judicial Interference: Ripeness ensures that courts do not overstep their bounds by ruling on issues that have not yet fully materialized, thereby avoiding advisory opinions or unnecessary interference in governmental or private affairs. The Role of Ripeness in Constitutional Law Ripeness plays a particularly important role in constitutional law, especially in cases where plaintiffs challenge the validity of government actions. For instance, if a person seeks to challenge the constitutionality of a law that has not yet been enforced against them, the court may find the case unripe. One notable case is Abbott Laboratories v. Gardner (1967), in which the U.S. Supreme Court set out the standard for ripeness in administrative law. In this case, the court determined that pharmaceutical companies could challenge FDA regulations before they were enforced because waiting for enforcement would cause significant hardship to the companies. How to Address Ripeness in Legal Strategy When planning a legal strategy, it’s critical for attorneys to assess the ripeness of their case. Bringing a case before it is ripe risks dismissal and may also delay the resolution of the underlying issue. Here are a few tips for ensuring that your case is ripe for judicial consideration: - Gather Evidence: Make sure the dispute is based on concrete facts and not hypothetical future events. - Assess Immediate Harm: Ensure that the parties face immediate and tangible harm from the dispute to satisfy the hardship prong of the ripeness test. - Monitor Developments: In regulatory cases, consider waiting until the law has been enforced or a final agency action has been taken to avoid issues of ripeness. Conclusion The ripeness doctrine is a critical component of the legal system, ensuring that courts only hear disputes that are fully developed and ready for resolution. By preventing premature cases from clogging the judicial pipeline, ripeness safeguards the efficiency of the legal process and protects courts from issuing advisory opinions. Understanding the ripeness of a legal case is essential for attorneys and litigants alike. Whether challenging a law, a contract, or an administrative action, evaluating ripeness can be the key to successfully bringing a case before the courts. Read the full article

In today’s complex world, the need for accurate information and trustworthy investigative services has never been greater. Whether it’s for personal reasons, corporate matters, or legal cases, a private detective agency can play a crucial role in uncovering the truth. With their specialized skills, access to advanced technology, and commitment to discretion, private detectives provide invaluable support to individuals and businesses alike.
In this blog post, we will explore the key services offered by private detective agencies, the importance of choosing the right agency, and how these professionals help clients navigate challenging situations with confidence.
What is a Private Detective Agency?
A private detective agency is a professional service provider that specializes in gathering information and conducting investigations on behalf of clients. Unlike public law enforcement agencies, private detectives work independently and focus on solving cases that may not fall under the jurisdiction of the police. They handle a wide range of cases, including personal investigations, corporate inquiries, and legal support.
Private detective agencies are known for their discretion and ability to operate without drawing attention. This makes them ideal for situations where confidentiality is paramount, such as marital disputes, employee background checks, or corporate espionage cases.
Services Offered by Private Detective Agencies
Private detective agencies offer a diverse range of services tailored to meet the needs of their clients. Some of the most common services include:
1. Matrimonial Investigations
One of the most sought-after services is matrimonial investigations. Whether it’s pre-marriage verification or post-marriage infidelity investigations, private detectives help clients gain clarity about their relationships. They conduct background checks, verify personal details, and monitor suspicious behavior to provide clients with the information they need to make informed decisions.
2. Background Checks
Private detective agencies specialize in conducting thorough background checks for various purposes. This could include pre-employment screening, tenant verification, or checking the history of a potential business partner. Background checks help clients ensure that they are dealing with trustworthy individuals.
3. Corporate Investigations
In the corporate world, private detective agencies play a crucial role in protecting businesses from fraud, theft, and corporate espionage. They conduct internal investigations, monitor employees, and provide surveillance services to detect and prevent illegal activities within the organization.
4. Surveillance Services
Surveillance is a core service offered by private detective agencies. Whether it’s tracking a person’s movements, monitoring a location, or gathering evidence, surveillance allows detectives to observe and document activities without being detected. This service is often used in cases of infidelity, fraud, or asset tracking.
5. Missing Persons Investigations
When a loved one goes missing, time is of the essence. Private detectives are skilled in locating missing persons, whether they have disappeared due to personal reasons, family disputes, or criminal activities. They work closely with law enforcement agencies and use advanced techniques to track down individuals.
6. Legal Support and Evidence Gathering
Private detective agencies often collaborate with legal professionals to gather evidence for court cases. This includes collecting witness statements, conducting surveillance, and obtaining documents that can support legal proceedings. Their expertise in evidence gathering ensures that clients have a strong case in court.
Why Choose a Private Detective Agency?
There are several reasons why individuals and businesses may choose to hire a private detective agency:
1. Expertise and Experience
Private detectives are trained professionals with experience in various investigative techniques. They know how to gather information, conduct surveillance, and analyze data effectively. Their expertise allows them to solve complex cases that may be beyond the scope of ordinary individuals.
2. Discretion and Confidentiality
One of the key benefits of hiring a private detective agency is the assurance of discretion. Detectives operate covertly, ensuring that the investigation remains confidential. This is particularly important in sensitive cases such as marital disputes or corporate investigations.
3. Access to Resources
Private detective agencies have access to resources that are not available to the general public. This includes databases, surveillance equipment, and networks of contacts that allow them to gather information more efficiently. Their access to these resources enhances the effectiveness of their investigations.
4. Objective Perspective
Hiring a private detective provides an objective perspective on the situation. Unlike family members or colleagues who may be emotionally involved, detectives approach the case with a neutral viewpoint, focusing solely on gathering facts.
5. Timely Results
In many cases, time is a critical factor. Private detectives understand the urgency of certain situations and work quickly to provide results. Whether it’s locating a missing person or uncovering fraud, their ability to deliver timely information can make a significant difference.
How to Choose the Right Private Detective Agency
Selecting the right private detective agency is essential to ensure a successful investigation. Here are some tips to help you make the right choice:
Reputation: Look for an agency with a strong reputation and positive client reviews. A reputable agency is more likely to deliver reliable and professional services.
Experience: Choose an agency with experience in handling cases similar to yours. Experienced detectives are better equipped to handle complex situations and provide accurate results.
Confidentiality: Ensure that the agency prioritizes confidentiality and has strict protocols in place to protect your privacy.
Licensing and Accreditation: Verify that the agency is licensed and accredited by relevant authorities. This ensures that they operate legally and adhere to industry standards.
Communication: Choose an agency that maintains clear and transparent communication throughout the investigation process. Regular updates and open dialogue are key to a successful partnership.
Conclusion
A private detective agency can be a valuable ally in navigating challenging situations, whether they are personal, corporate, or legal in nature. With their expertise, discretion, and access to resources, private detectives provide clients with the information they need to make informed decisions. By choosing the right agency, you can ensure that your case is handled professionally and with the utmost confidentiality.
Whether you’re dealing with a matrimonial issue, a corporate concern, or a legal matter, hiring a reputable private detective agency can help you uncover the truth and move forward with confidence.

Five events that shaped contemporary Swiss-American relations
The United States and Switzerland have experienced remarkable highs and bruising lows in their post-war relationship. Their disputes, in particular, have tested core Swiss principles such as neutrality. In a speech at an Independence Day party in Zurich in 2023, American ambassador Scott Miller captured the essence of relations between Switzerland and his country. “There is no issue of global importance where our nations are not leading together,” he said, “or where we are not sharing our common values to make things better.” Recent history is full of examples of the two countries collaborating over a shared interest in a stable, rules-based international system. One highlight was Switzerland, a neutral country, rolling out the red carpet for talks between US President Joe Biden and Russian President Vladimir Putin amid geopolitical tensions in June 2021. Another high point came when Swiss and American authorities created the Fund for the Afghan People in 2022 to inject some of the ... https://www.swissinfo.ch/eng/foreign-affairs/five-events-that-shaped-contemporary-swiss-american-relations/87523612?utm_source=multiple&utm_campaign=swi-rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_content=o (Source of the original content)

To Be Loved Is to Be Considered: The Heart of Romantic Relationships
In the realm of romantic relationships, the phrase "to be loved is to be considered" captures the essence of what it means to truly connect with a partner. Love is often associated with grand gestures and dramatic declarations, but at its core, the most profound aspect of affection is the simple, yet powerful act of consideration. This means acknowledging and valuing your partner in ways that go beyond superficial interactions, demonstrating that their needs and feelings are genuinely important to you.
Consideration in a romantic relationship manifests through everyday actions that reflect a deep understanding of your partner’s desires and preferences. It’s about being attentive to their needs, whether it's remembering their favorite comfort food or knowing the right way to support them during stressful times. These small, thoughtful acts show that you are tuned into their life and well-being, reinforcing that they are a priority in your world. Such attentiveness not only fosters a sense of belonging but also strengthens the emotional bond between partners.
A relationship where consideration is central is marked by an ongoing effort to be in tune with each other’s feelings and needs. This can be seen in how partners navigate conflicts and disagreements. Rather than approaching issues with rigidity, a considerate partner will strive to understand the other’s perspective, aiming for resolutions that honor both parties’ feelings. This approach promotes healthy communication and helps in resolving disputes in a way that maintains mutual respect and trust.
Furthermore, to be loved is to be considered also involves anticipating and addressing your partner's needs even before they are explicitly expressed. It’s about being proactive in showing care and affection, whether it’s planning a surprise date night or offering a comforting gesture during a challenging day. This level of attentiveness speaks volumes about how much you value your partner, making them feel cherished and understood.
Reciprocity is key in a relationship grounded in consideration. For love to truly flourish, both partners must engage in this practice of attentiveness. Each person should strive to show consideration for the other’s needs and feelings, creating a balanced dynamic where both individuals feel valued and supported. This mutual effort nurtures a relationship where both partners feel deeply loved and appreciated.
It’s important to recognize that consideration in love is not about perfection but about genuine effort and care. Mistakes and misunderstandings are inevitable, but a relationship built on a foundation of consideration allows for growth and learning. When both partners are committed to understanding and addressing each other’s needs, they build a resilient connection capable of weathering challenges and celebrating joys together.
In essence, the principle that to be loved is to be considered encapsulates the core of romantic relationships. It highlights that love is not just about expressing affection but about actively showing that your partner’s happiness and well-being matter to you. By integrating thoughtful consideration into your daily interactions, you nurture a relationship that is rich in understanding and deeply rooted in mutual respect, ensuring that both partners feel genuinely loved and valued.
