Re-reading Iron Flame and realizing that Violet did not play into the 'just ask' shit Xaden pulled because of a way more plausible reason than simply insecurity: She was BUSY!

Violet was surviviing second year, with an added layer of assassination attempts and running away from Aetos sticky little memory reader hands and a crazy vice commandant that had it out for her from the start. Not to count all the shit of RSC classes and flight lessons that were undeniably hard for her.

She was reading a lot of books trying to learn about wards, like...too many books. Can you imagine how long that took? Girl did not have time to dwell on her broken relationship with Xaden within the mountains of books she had to read. All alone too because at that point she knew Xaden would not approve of her research and she was trying to be distant from her friends.

When she finally has an answer on how to find the correct books, she spends time and focus building a plan to get the journals while also dealing with the fact she has her entire squad on it and ready to risk their lives! Too many people for her to worry about.

She's tortured for five days, then flies to Aretia, then immediatly starts translating the journal while dealing with all the political mess with the Assembly and taking classes, learning a bunch of new stuff that requires studying and rewiring her entire brain.

Fails the first translation, which seems devastating considering she was tortured for five days, translated for gods know how many weeks and all that labor seemed to be for nothing.

Went behind Xaden's overprotective ass to go to Cordyn to try and at least solve ONE of the problems in Aretia, putting herself and her siblings in danger. Also, put in there more planning and worrying.

Has to not only cross a cliff, but start to deal with Catriona's shit while still re-translating the journal and having to deal with Xaden's stupid questions of 'why are you feeling the way you're feeling?'. SIR, THE GIRL IS GOING INSANE! Give her a BREAK!

Anyway. My take is: poor Violet was being pulled in so many directions that OF COURSE she did not have time to dwell on her insecurities and indulge on that stupid 'ask me' shit Xaden pulled.

Note: I know Xaden also was busy and had many shit thrown on his shoulders, but let's not forget that Violet put a lot of work into moving things forward at the expense of her mental and physical health! She had a lot on her plate during IF and her actions were very important for the changes in the plot.

I promise I'm working on that one too! That one will be coming out after the second part of 'Forgotten'. I have at least 5 separate works I'm currently working on, so I'm trying to make sure I get all my ideas out on one before switching to the next.

But, to hopefully tide you over for the time being, here's s snippet of the third installment of 'You'll Survive'. Enjoy!

“Riorson!” A booming voice calls as you are walking back towards the fortress, a shiver of realization of who the voice belongs to hits you right before the strike. 

Of all the things you expected coming back to Aretia from Cordyn, the last thing you figured would be Garrick’s fist colliding directly with Xaden’s face. You finally get a good look at Garrick’s face and murderous intent is plastered plainly there, in the direction of his best friend. 

“What the fuck do you think you’re doing?” Garrick continues to challenge Xaden as the two have now turned to face each other. You can tell Xaden is trying not to react, but that doesn’t stop the irritation on his face and the way his fists clench.

“Garrick, it wasn’t Xaden. He only came after Sgaeyl alerted him.” Violet tries to placate the situation, but it’s obvious that Garrick is more than keyed up after the incidents you’ve had with Xaden recently.

“You don’t see me putting the woman you love in constant fucking danger, do you?” You watch as the vein in his jaw feathers, displaying how hard he is clenching his teeth to keep himself in check. 

Not waiting on what’s going to happen, you walk up to the rage-filled man and pull him down by the collar of his flight leathers. The sudden movement jerks his face to yours, but since he wasn’t expecting it, his fingers dig into your arms in defense as you bite back a whimper of pain. 

Realization hitting his golden eyes, Garrick immediately drops his hands and the malice that was shining there a moment before turns to sorrow. His eyes begin darting around your face looking for injuries and a moment later you are plastered against his chest.

Bodhi:

Let’s start with the basics - how many kids does he have: if I had my way with this series Bodhi and his partner would have a lot of kids. So I let’s just say 3, for now haha.

Who is causing the trouble: eldest and second eldest. The two are caught sneaking sweets out of the kitchen. So he’s called out of his very important meeting to talk to them

Let’s be real, he’s kind of smiling because that’s what he and Xaden did when they were little

So he’s not too hard on them. Is very calm on why what they did was wrong and the importance of being patient to wait for after dinner etc.

While he’s forgiving his partner isn’t. They are a bit more strict. Lolol the kids are afraid of her and Bodhi is usually like “don’t make me get your mother.”

Xaden:

Let’s start with the basics - how many kids does he have: probably one. A daughter. And she’s best friends with all of Bodhi’s kids

Lolol this is already cracking me up

Who’s causing the trouble: daughter knocks over a Poromish sculpture while running through the halls and gets pulled into the Assembly room, interrupting very important meeting

Xaden just laughs. You think he’s going to discipline his kid?

His kid. His house. His sculptures. And if it’s he and Violet’s child or their daughter looks anything like her, he’s not doing shit.

He’s like, “you hurt sweetie? Oh Good. I hated that sculpture. It was a gift from Tecarus and I was going to get rid of it soon. Did I ever tell you the time me and mommy kicked his ass in Cordyn?…”

Lolol this child will get away with everything. She can do no wrong

Will probably cancel the meeting and get her a piece of cake if she’s crying because the sound of the sculpture falling scared her

Garrick:

Ok. I don’t think he or Imogen will have kids.

But he will absolutely be fun uncle.

Best uncle

Like. If any of Bodhi or Garricks kids get in trouble he’s bailing them out

Picture this. All the Durran and Riorson kids get in trouble for sneaking out to the hatching grounds to see a baby dragon and get caught up in some shit and Bodhi and xaden are ready to lay down the law and Garrick’s like, “I know you’re both busy. I’ll handle the little shits”

A soon as they leave Garrick just starts laughing and is like “can’t believe you walked into a dragons den…look if you want to do it again and not get caught here’s what you do.”

Uncle Garrick is the best

Will let all the kids play with his swords and weapons only to get yelled at by everyone

🌩 Onyx Storm Spoilers and Theories

The Zehyllna Zinhal Gift Game

The "gift" game seems to be predictions for the future of all the characters that are still alive and played it.

Mira, being the first to pick, gets a wine bottle. At the end of ch. 58, her throat gets sliced, and she is actively bleeding out.

Maren receives two orange tunics. I am assuming to spot where her brothers are when the last Venin attack happens and she goes to save them.

Dain gets slapped. Now, either he is betrayed since people tend to phrase betrayal as a "slap in the face," or it's to the brief pain he encounters when letting Sloane siphon magic from him to give to Brennan. Who could have betrayed him? I think it's Aetos Sr or Panchek. In Xaden's POV, we know Panchek has been feeding venin information. Aetos Sr might have been an accomplice in this.

Garrick is given a rusted steel bucket. At the end of Imogen's POV, she has an idea. I think Garrick collects the alloy-hilted daggers in his bucket.

Aaric receives a fractured hand mirror that cuts his thumb. This I see more as foreshadowing him being a precog. He might be able to see several different scenarios, and one scenario ends in blood shed. (The other thing it could hint at, but I doubt it. Aaric joined the riders quadrant for the same reason Xaden and the marked ones sneaked out weapons. To defend the people of the Continent and defeat the venin. If Aaric was meant to get a second signet for the same reason the marked ones were, he might go insane instead. Other than bad luck, broken mirrors can suggest that something is broken within you.)

Xaden gets an empty box the size of his foot, with pewter hinges and edges. I do not know how big dragon eggs are, but seeing how Violet could give a shell to Courtlyn, i think the box is for the missing dragon eggs. Or forshadowing Xaden fully turning since venin don't have feelings

Violet gets (supposedly) a broken compass with a needle that doesn't point anywhere near north. This could be a few things. She has an argument with Brennan about how she picks to save everyone, and Brennan wants her to pick between saving the people or saving Xaden. She is missing 12 hours of information at the end of the book and lost her sense of direction. Or her fighting between not wanting to be a leader and being a leader.

Cat is given a gold necklace with a dangling ruby the size of Violet's thumb. Two things: either, she ends up dangling off the side of a cliff, or the ruby might be something special to use as a bargaining chip to get information from someone.

Drake is given Broccoli or "the claw." Drake went back to Cordyn (with broccoli, RY hinted to that in an interview), and who is Tecarus close too? Courtlyn. And what was Courtlyn's beautiful creature? Panthers. Drake might be working in getting Courtlyn to join the war somehow or secure trade of weapons from Violet's deal.

(And to whoever reads this, I know what you're thinking: "But stheno you're forgetting someone." No, I'm not. I'm just actively avoiding it and will not be putting bad vibes out there against Ridoc "good thing I fuck like a third/I hate sewing/I kept the inside voices on the inside" Gamlyn. I know what it could mean in a literary sense, but I'm going to think of it as he gets a great idea and someone kisses him on the mouth for it. Point. Blank. Period. With a scenario as innocent as that, why analyze it? He makes it out alive in book four, ok? OK?!.......... ok, I need to calm down and touch some grass 😂)

chapter 21 is 10k words and I haven't written a lot of the scenes yet! there's going to be a reveal in this chapter that I've kinda been hinting at since v and x were in cordyn but I don't think anyone picked up on it so im trying to figure out the best way to write it. but we're making good progress so I think publishing it this weekend is a good bet. this might end up being my longest chapter since the 21k monstrosity at the end of VSGTSAS lol

Ok back to more serious theories: Professor Grady is venin. Here's why (Onyx Storm spoilers below the cut):

I've mentioned this one before, but while reading Iron Flame, I was 99% certain Professor Grady was venin.

Here's the thing,

He's buddy-buddy with Varrish, which is 1. a real indicator of his character and 2. we all think Varrish was venin too, so...

He was involved with the serum and its implementation, no? Which could be used to try and control venin, but also...it incapacitates riders in a way never seen before and I think that's part of a larger venin-conspiracy

He's said to have spent the most time behind enemy lines and personally I don't think he was captured by fliers. I'm sure that's what some parts of Navarre's leadership think, but really let's be so for real: he was off being venin-ified. Whether he was captured by the venin or the Poromish are just working with them is dealer's choice (more on that later!)

Most importantly (and what made me suspicious of him in the first place) is this:

"This year, you’ll learn what to do if you fall off. Welcome to Rider Survival Course, or RSC for short.” “What the hell is that?” Ridoc mutters. “I don’t know,” I whisper, writing the letters RSC in the blank book in front of me. “But you know everything.” His eyes widen. “Clearly not.” Seems to be the theme lately. “Don’t know what it is?” Professor Grady asks with a grin, staring straight at Ridoc. “Good—our tactics work.”

Which was followed much later by this:

Though there is some debate, it is greatly believed that turning venin heightens one of the dark wielder’s senses. It is this scholar’s belief that the one responsible for the death of King Grethwild developed keener eyesight. For not even the best of His Majesty’s royal fliers could see through the darkness the venin hid within to slay our beloved king. —MAJOR EDVARD TILLER’S UNACCREDITED STUDY OF THE VENIN PROPERTY OF THE LIBRARY OF CORDYN

I think Grady heard him and I don't think it's from a well-directed rune. I think he's venin. The scene just stuck in my head from the jump like a little thorn, the same way Xaden whipping around on the parapet did (when he first read Violet).

Anyway, since we'll see him on Violet's squad headed off to Poromiel or the Isles in OS, maybe it will be revealed there when he betrays her. Bonus points if Xaden senses he's a venin first though, that would be a vibe.

Oh DO elaborate on RY liking Xaden more than Violet. You have me intrigued 👀

Okay, here we go again...

(I wrote a LOT, and this is just me contextualizing why I have this feeling)

By the 3/4 mark of FW (after Vi and Xaden have sex for the first time) I noticed a sudden shift of focus in the story, up until that point the narrative was centered around Violet's conflicts in the quadrant, her relationship with her dragons and friends (Liam and Dain specifically), and her own growth regarding her skills and power but after.... well

The story in itself was already pretty centered around developing Vi/Xaden dynamics, and since it's a romantasy that's to be expected, but Violet still had plenty of space to be her own person without him (she deals with Jack on her own; sneaks out with Rhi and Mira in Montserrat; steals the map with her squad during war games; goes to the archives with Liam and interacts with Jesinia. some mommy issues here and there, etc)

Anyways, jumps to them sleeping together -> issues with him not wanting to feel involved because he's lying to her -> reunification day -> love declarations and more sex -> wargames -> she finds out he's lying to her and everything sucks -> wakes up in Aretia

Now IF was something, and I don't want to drag this out too much so just to point out a couple examples:

Violet never goes to Shantara with her friends and instead spends all her time thinking about and interacting with Xaden, we have 1 scene of her actually talking to Rhi and that's it

The time Violet, Mira and Brennan sneaked out to Cordyn to negotiate for the luminary could've been a plot around siblings bonding and talking things over but instead, Xaden gets shoved in the middle of it and now the situation is about Cat being bitchy, and fighting with Vi over Xaden's attention

Violet, Mira, and Brennan do fight a venin together but then the story shifts again to Xaden being overprotective and choking Tecarus and we have no more interaction between the 3 that I can remember (notice they did not, in fact, talk anything through)

There are more moments where I don’t think Xaden was actually necessary to further the plot and could’ve just stayed out so Violet’s other relationships and goals could have some space to be explored more in-depth, it doesn’t help that many of those times he was just in the scene to repeat the same inner conflict Violet had for the tenth time about him and not to actually do something with his character.

Now, besides the overuse of him in the story we also have his description, which basically consists of him being better than anyone else (keep in mind that's a 23yr man), he's the tallest, strongest, more powerful (for now at least), heir of a crown, two incredibly rare signets, is never wrong about anything, always one step ahead (keep in mind he is a 23yr man against an entire government), is the unofficial leader of the revolution, heavily objectified, etc, etc, etc, while everyone else is... just a person - I let that slide because again, romantasy, the love interest is always the tallest guy with the most rare/amazing/special power to ever power until the fmc arrives

Connect that with how RY develops Violet's opposing forces within her circle (the assembly and cat, to be specific), the whole Violet/Xaden/Cat situation is (according to RY) a conflict for power, but when we look at what she actually wrote... that whole "I'm not doing this over a man" argument holds no weight since none of Cat's actions is related to anything besides wanting Xaden back and being his ex

Cat and Violet could've had a genuine rivalry based on their family's history, maybe some academic rivals like we see the two having over the runes and everything but NO, every argument the two had was about who had Xaden first and who he wanted now

When the author repeatedly shifts the focus of the narrative to revolve around the love interest to the detriment of the main character's journey and development I think it is safe to assume said author likes the love interest more than she cares for the main character.

(Biggest proof I can think of is when Mira gets in Aretia, we have sibling drama until Xaden arrives and then oops, just focusing on him now, no more family drama)

Anyway, my last point is how he's framed and excused by the narrative, we have quite a few people openly taking his side on the "full disclosure" conflict (I can think about Imogen and Brennan from memory and will not go back to see who else) and pointing out why Vi was being unreasonable to want to know everything, even RY commented that "it's like dating a CIA agent" or whatever to defend Xaden while, in the text, Violet could not care less about knowing of the revolution, every time she got upset with him was because he was keeping things that involved her.

Big problem with the series actually, we are told a lot of things but not shown any of them.

Another time back in FW when Dain asks "why he has a pass to be overprotective" and the answer Vi gives is not it, multiple times ignoring her boundaries and exercising power over her that are never addressed or even framed as bad, many things glossed over, etc etc.

How he's also portrayed as the only person besides Violet who can actually think, the only one to notice she was poisoning people, the only half-competent assembly member, the only one capable of smuggling weapons (can someone give the man a break, he's overworked)

Also, have you seen RY talking about him in comparison of how she talks about VI or anyone else? I think it is quite obvious actually

Oh, Brother!

A few weeks ago I made a post wondering what it would be like if Garrick and Xaden's younger sister are infatuated with each other, unaware of Xaden's ✨abilities✨.

A huge thanks to @softodettes for the encouragement to go down that rabbit hole and the feedback as I wrote it!

The September night is unseasonably chilly as I descend the steps of Basgiath War College to the Iakabos riverbanks. It’s beyond me as to why Xaden insists on meeting with our fellow Tyrs so gods-damned frequently or so gods-damned late, but here we are. 

My stomach twists a bit, but I steel myself. I haven’t seen Garrick since leaving his room early this morning. It’s all I’ve been able to think about today. Is this deadly? Incredibly. You don’t survive a fucking war college if you’re smitten. Get a grip, Fiona, I think to myself. 

With Xaden doing gods-know-what in Cordyn with Cat this weekend, I’d been on my own for the night. Xaden may be our father’s living image, but it’s not easy being having the same initials as the Great Betrayer either. I’ve had enough murder attempts for a lifetime since Conscription Day seven weeks ago. 

In Xaden’s absence, Garrick kindly invited me to his room for safety yesterday evening. The barracks seem to be the attackers' favorite location. Two more weeks til I get my own fucking room. 

One thing had led to another with Garrick and before I knew it, I’d had three of the best orgasms of my life. Who would pass up the opportunity to be with a man when he has a body practically crafted by the gods? Especially when you may or may not have been enamoured with him since you were thirteen? I certainly wasn’t going to say no. We ended up falling asleep together, and I slipped out around 5:30, giving me plenty of time before kitchen duty this morning. 

I can see the group about a hundred yards away and refuse to let myself feel unnerved. I clench my fists and join them, finding Imogen, who is coincidentally next to Ciaran, her own childhood infatuation. 

My older brother stands, arms crossed, Garrick to his right. Holy Dunne does Garrick look good tonight. The moonlight shines through his dark hair and falls across his strong shoulders. Fuck me, those well-defined, sculpted  shoulders. What I wouldn’t do to step across this circle and yank his shirt off to reveal the masterpiece beneath. 

Xaden gives me a nod, eyes narrowing. My brother isn’t exactly warm and fuzzy, but he has been quite vested in my safety. He slit an attacker’s throat when someone tried to take me out in the gym after challenges during the first week. I’ll call him protective any day of the week, but at least it’s kept me safe in this hellhole of a quadrant. 

“How was Cordyn?” I raise an eyebrow, hoping he’ll read between the lines. I’m more interested in the hellcat he was dealing with. 

“Fine,” he mutters. 

When a few more first year cadets finally join, Xaden launches into his suggestions for the Gauntlet. It’s nothing I haven’t heard before. Garrick is too much of a distraction for me to pay proper attention anyways. 

A second year starts to offer some advice that must be shit because Garrick holds out his hands to cut them off—--sweet goddess Amari those palms. The way they gripped my waist and encircled my wrists last night leaves me more breathless than I want to admit. 

Xaden coughs quite surreptitiously. Garrick gives him a look, then yields. My brother launches into another lecture about how to prepare for Presentation. 

Someone makes a quip that Garrick laughs at—-what did he find so funny? But I’m quickly lost in the way those soft lips turn up in a smile. What I would give to have those lips once again pressed against my neck, my chest, my thighs, my—-

“Fiona,” my brother says abruptly. “How are the first years doing in challenges?” His jaw has seemingly succumbed to spasms. Serves him right for talking our ears off. 

I toss him a glare for putting me on the spot. Fucking rude. “Nothing has changed since I updated you last week. Imogen is still our best fighter. Bodhi and I are cataloguing the strengths and weaknesses of the first year Tyrs and pairing training partners up accordingly. Eya and Ciaran have created different strength training programs.” My brother gives a quick nod, then starts going on about dragon breeds. 

Garrick crosses his arms over his chest and I’m a goner. I envision the way he’d cupped my ass and hoisted me against his pectorals. Then the way those arms would lay me down and remove every piece of clothing—-

Xaden’s shadows quake through the group in seeming agitation. What is his problem tonight? 

“Someone’s coming,” he says gruffly. “Head back in your groups, but don’t fucking get caught.” 

The Tyrs disperse quickly in twos and threes, leaving only my brother, Garrick, Bodhi, and me.

“I can’t sense anything, cousin,” Bodhi says, but my brother doesn’t meet his eyes. Xaden lets out a huff, staring into the dark with a gaze that would make most cadets run the other way. 

I chance a look at Garrick and can tell he is holding back a smirk. We make eye contact for the first time tonight and he fucking winks. 

That bastard. He certainly didn’t look so cocky last night when I had my lips wrapped around him. The way Garrick moaned my name while yanking back my hair? If we had the chance again, I could make him scream louder. 

“For Malek’s sake,” my brother grunts through clenched teeth. “Bodhi and Fiona, find your way back. Garrick, come with me.” He stalks off, leaving Garrick shaking his head, but quickly following. 

“Cat must’ve done a number on him,” Bodhi mutters. “Gods, I haven’t seen him that strung up since we got here.” 

“No clue what’s gotten into that asshole,” I agree, but I can’t help watching the two retreating figures in the distance, wondering how I’ll find my way back into Garrick’s bed.

If this is the case, I picture him as someone who skated by at Cliffsbane just due to his status and his gryphon enjoys a fat, lazy, spoiled existence in Cordyn now …

MORE Tyrrish Men Headcanons you didn't ask for (now with 30% more Garrick)

I was excited to see my last post on this was so popular so here is more. Also a disclaimer: I made all of these up as there is very little information on these characters. They are all Facts in my head...but questionable IRL, haha

Garrick is 100% wingman first and right after that is ladies man, mares in the stable and all that. He knows he's attractive, is a show off about it, and has had many lovers because of it. Relationships, probably none, but countless of trysts and 1 nighters

I think thats probably why he's so on-and-off with Imogen. I think he's ten toes down in love with her, and I think love scares him because love makes you do foolish things (he's watched his parents die for their country and Xaden be...Xaden, to be cautious of giving his heart to someone)

With his father's job being Fen's aid, Garrick is ultra perceptive, loyal, and hella charismatic. When Xaden says that Cat wasn't his first 'by a long shot' It was 100% due to him being around Garrick.

Could you image those two out on campus or in Cordyn before Xaden met Violet The backs hearts these two must of broke...

Should his S/O be in a relationship with him, they'd have to prepare for his quips and gawks at other people, I think his rizz level is so high he couldn't help himself

But, he's so so loyal. He will know everything about you due to how observant he is and will never miss a birthday, solstice, equinox, anniversary, you name it.

Probably has the most thoughtful dates; they are few and far between during his schedule but makes it happen. I imagine he's a bit more long distance (the revolution/being there for Xaden comes first) but when its 1:1 time with his partner, he's 100% giving you his time.

I be he has an excellent mental calendar

Also, he's the BEST person to come to if you need to vent. He will listen and wait until you're done to ask questions/respond. I think a lot of people go to him before going to Xaden so he gives really good advice/leadership.

Maybe a lil spice for this thread but his familial ties to supporting and aiding royalty he enjoys the role power he has as an XO and right hand to the revolution...but I do think he likes being told what to do behind closed doors. When his partner finds this out. Its over Gare.

Did i mention SO. LOYAL. He wouldn't have a who hurt you moment he would totally be that person that would take care of the problem secretly before they could even hurt you. Like your bully/nemeses is suddenly nice to you or randomly apologizes, go thank Garrick for that.

All Tyrrish men have giant sweet tooths, Garrick being the largest (Again, I explore this theory in humorous detail in 'Drifted')

Again, no facts to back this up but I bet he's a good dancer and has dragged just about everyone up on a table at one point to sing a Tyrrish song
