PEMDAS - Special Year-End Edition - Albums
I love end of year lists because I like consensus, rankings and numbers. But consensus is all based on who gets to rank, and the people who get the most access to major publication rankings are white men, so the numbers are tainted by white supremacy, misogyny, and many other forms of bigotry.
Which makes it even more interesting to see what gets ranked where.
Here’s a Google Sheet I made of all the lists and I created a formula that basically measures how many times an album placed on a list as well as how high it placed on that list. I’m going to keep updating this list as it’s not done, but it’s fun to play around with right now!
According to my formula and the critics, the top 10 albums of 2020 (in order) are:
#1: Fetch the Bolt Cutters •• Fiona Apple
#2: RTJ4 •• Run the Jewels
#3: folklore •• Taylor Swift
#4: Future Nostalgia •• Dua Lipa
#5: Punisher •• Phoebe Bridgers
#6: Set My Heart on Fire Immediately •• Perfume Genius
#7: Saint Cloud •• Waxahatchee
#8: Heaven to a Tortured Mind •• Yves Tumor
#9: Women in Music Pt. III •• HAIM
#10: Rough and Rowdy Ways •• Bob Dylan
I also have a fun, unranked albums list brewing. I’ll release that at the very end of the year.
Click below for all of the publication lists!

The trimurti in Hinduism is sometimes referred to by HIndus as the trinity of the Hindus. But the trimurti also becomes a quaternity in Hinduism. I have seen different examples for the transcendent fourth. I have read a book that described that the trimurti was a quaternity when the Mother Goddess was added. Another example is, those who worship Surya, the Sun God, see Surya as the transcendent fourth part of the trimurti. For the Surya worshippers, Surya encompasses the previous three deities in the trimurti. They say that the other three Gods are manifestations of Surya
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trimurti
The Quaternity for Surya worshippers in relation to the Hindu trimurti
Surya is Brahma in the morning
Surya is Shiva in the evening
Surya is Vishnu in the afternoon

There are 16 stages of life in Hinduism. These are the 16 Samskaras. http://www.vmission.org.in/hinduism/samskaras.htm
Indologist Jan Gonda has identified 16 steps (shodasha upachara) that are common in all varieties of puja:[27]
Avahana (“invocation”). The deity is invited to the ceremony from the heart.
Asana. The deity is offered a seat.
Padya. The deity’s feet are symbolically washed.
Water is offered for washing the head and body
Arghya. Water is offered so the deity may wash its mouth.
Snana or abhisekha. Water is offered for symbolic bathing.
Vastra (“clothing”). Here a cloth may be wrapped around the image and ornaments affixed to it.
Upaveeda or Mangalsutra. Putting on the sacred thread.
Anulepana or gandha. Perfumes and ointments are applied to the image. Sandalwood paste or kumkum is applied.
Pushpa. Flowers are offered before the image, or garlands draped around its neck.
Dhupa. Incense is burned before the image.
Dipa or Aarti. A burning lamp is waved in front of the image.
Naivedya. Foods such as cooked rice, fruit, clarified butter, sugar, and betel leaf are offered.
Namaskara or pranama. The worshipper and family bow or prostrate themselves before the image to offer homage.
Parikrama or Pradakshina. Circumambulation around the deity.
Taking leave

There are 16 stages of Puja in hinduism.
There are four major denominations of Hinduism
Vaishnavism
Shaktism
Shaivism
Smartism
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hindu_denominations
Panchayatana puja is the form of Puja in the transcendent fourth denomination Smartism. A quincunx is a cross/X made of five parts. The deities in Smartism are worshipped in the form of a quincunx.
The Ramayana
The marriage of the four sons of Dasharatha with the four daughters of Siradhvaja and Kushadhvaja Janakas. Rama and Sita, Laskhmana and Urmila, Bharata and Mandavi and Shatrughna with Shrutakirti.

Surely, if I had known them, I should have taught them to you. I will not lie, for he who lies perishes, root and all.”” The prince silently mounted his chariot and went away. So now I ask of thee, Where is the Self?’” (Prashna Upanishad 6:1).

According to many Hindus, like the Hare Krishna, Krishna originally had two quadruple expansions. According to these Hindus, Krishna is the supreme God. The two quadruple expansions are similar to the gnostic notion that in the beginning was two tetrads.
https://www.facebook.com/Knowyourgod/posts/501900056583733:0
First quadruple expansion
Karanadakashayi Vishnu [Maha-Vishnu]
Kshirodakashayi Vishnu [the Supersoul in each individual]
Garbhodakashayi Vishnu [the expansion in each universe]
Sesha, also called Seshanaga
These four create the material cosmic manifestation.
Krishna then expands himself into four forms. These four forms experience pastimes in Vrindavan. When studying Hare Krishna I would watch cartoons on the pastimes of Krishna. The cartoons consisted of these four characters, who are four forms of Krishna.

The hotṛ was the reciter of invocations and litanies. These could consist of single verses (ṛca), strophes (triples called tṛca or pairs called pragātha), or entire hymns (sukta), drawn from the ṛgveda. As each phase of the ritual required an invocation, the hotṛ had a leading or presiding role.[citation needed]
The udgātṛ was a chanter of hymns set to melodies (sāman) drawn from the sāmaveda. This was a specialized role in the major soma sacrifices: a characteristic function of the udgātṛ was to sing hymns in praise of the invigorating properties of soma pavamāna, the freshly pressed juice of the soma plant.[citation needed]
The adhvaryu was in charge of the physical details of the sacrifice (in particular the adhvara, a term for the Somayajna). According to Monier-Williams, the adhvaryu "had to measure the ground, to build the altar, to prepare the sacrificial vessels, to fetch wood and water, to light the fire, to bring the animal and immolate it," among other duties.[citation needed] Each action was accompanied by supplicative or benedictive formulas (yajus), drawn from the yajurveda. Over time, the role of the adhvaryugrew in importance, and many verses of the ṛgveda were incorporated, either intact or adapted, into the texts of the yajurveda.[citation needed]
The brahman was the reciter of hymns from the atharvaveda who was largely silent and observes the procedures and uses Atharvaveda mantras to 'heal' it when mistakes have been made.
With the hotṛ:
the maitrāvaruna
the acchāvāka
the grāvastut (praising the Soma stones)
With the udgātṛ:
the prastotṛ (who chants the Prastâva)
the pratihartṛ ("averter")
the subrahmanya
With the adhvaryu:
the pratiprasthātṛ
the neṣṭṛ
the unnetṛ (who pours the Soma juice into the receptacles )
With the brahman:
the brāhmanācchamsin
the agnīdh (priest who kindles the sacred fire)
the potṛ ("purifier")
The Hindus have a four caste system
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Caste_system_in_India
Brahmins (priestly people)- mental. The first square is mental and good.
Vaishyas (artisans, merchants, tradesmen and farmers)- These are the doers.
Kshatriyas (also called Rajanyas, who were rulers, administrators and warriors). Homeostasis. The second square maintains order and structure. Rulers and administrators organize and order. Warriors protect.
Shudras (labouring classes).
The fourth caste was seen as different
http://www.dictionary.com/browse/twice-born
The three upper orders were “distinguished from the shudras”.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dvija
The Brahmins, the Kshatriyas, and the Vishyas are considered “twice born” but the shudras are not.
http://eighttwosix.blogspot.com/2010/03/indias-caste-system-socially-useful.html
Again the quadrant pattern in the caste system is fulfilled in that the first three castes are different from the fourth. Hindus say that they have a four caste system. There is a fifth element that is so different that it is not even really considered a caste. The fifth is always questionable and ultra transcendent. I described how Empedocles said that fire is the fourth different element. But fire still associates with air, water and Earth. The fifth, ultra transcendent element, aether, does not even interact with the first four. It is not even connected. The same holds true for the untouchables.
Ramakrishna had a teaching about four wise men and an elephant. The four wise men touched different parts of the elephant, and thought the elephant was the aspect they touched. Ramakrishna says that religion is like the elephant, and different religions understand a different part of the whole
One touched the leg of the elephant, and said, "The elephant is like a pillar."
The third touched the belly, and said, "The elephant is like a big jar."
The second touched the trunk, and said, "The elephant is like a thick stick or club."
The fourth touched the ears, and said, "The elephant is like a winnowing basket."

The stanzas in an "ashtakam" are a rhyming quartet with four lines, i.e. end lines rhyme as a-a-a-a. Thus, in an ashtakam generally thirty-two lines are maintained. All these stanzas follow a strict rhyme scheme. The proper rhyme scheme for an astakam is: a-a-a-a/b-b-b-b….. (/ represents a new stanza).
The conventions associated with the ashtakam have evolved over its literary history of more than 2500 years. One of the best known ashtakam writers was Adi Sankaracharya, who created an ashtakam cycle with a group of ashtakams, arranged to address a particular deity, and designed to be read both as a collection of fully realized individual poems and as a single poetic work comprising all the individual ashtakams. He wrote more than thirty astakams in stuti [dedication] to various deities.

King Vajra then had 16 idols of Krishna and other gods carved from a rare, imperishable stone called Braja and built temples to house these idols in and around Mathura so as to feel the presence of Lord Krishna. The four presiding idols of Braja Mandala are Sri Harideva of Govardhan, Sri Keshava Deva of Mathura, Sri Baladeva of Baladeo, and Govindaji of Vrindavan. There are two Naths—Sri Nathji, who were originally at Govardhan and are now in Nathdwara, Rajasthan and Sri Gopinath, who is now in Jaipur. The two Gopals are Sri Madana Mohan, who is now housed at Karoli Rajasthan, and Sakshi Gopal, who is now moved to town of Sakshi Gopal, Orissa, near Puri. There are 16 squares in the quadrant model.
The show Information Please would have a transcendent fourth guest panelist.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Information_Please
Panel regulars included writer-actor-pianist Oscar Levant and newspaper columnists and renowned wits and intellectuals Franklin P. Adams and John Kieran. All the panelists were well-versed in a wide range of topics, though each had a specialty. Music and filmquestions were often addressed to Levant. Adams was well known for his mastery of poetry, popular culture and Gilbert and Sullivan. Kieran was an expert in natural history, sports and literature. A typical question would have three or four parts and would require the panelists to get a majority of the questions right, lest they lose the prize money.
The show would always have a fourth guest panelist, usually either a celebrity, a politician or writer. Guest panelists included Fred Allen, Leonard Bernstein, Boris Karloff, Clare Boothe Luce, Dorothy Parker, S. J. Perelman, Sigmund Spaeth, Rex Stout, Jan Struther, Deems Taylor, Jackie Robinson, Alexander Woollcott, George S. Kaufman, Ruth Gordon, Orson Welles, Basil Rathboneand a very young Myron "Mike" Wallace.
A variation of Information Please, this time a program devoted exclusively to music with the same four-member panel format, became popular when it was televised in Los Angeles in 1953. After two years of local success, Musical Chairs became a summer replacement series on NBC Television. The Bill Leyden-hosted game show lasted eleven weeks on the national airwaves.

To relive the blocked energies, centre of existence need to be balanced for well-being and better life. Our living place consists of five elements. Space which is the most important of all the five elements.
Air is governing element of North-west corner while fire is assigned the South-east because of its aggressive nature. Water is an element of North-east and earth is assigned with South-west. Likewise the human body is a crafted frame having an order of five elements called chakras which is balanced by external elements. The elements of living place need to be balanced akin we balance body’s elements with external material such as food and meditation.
Vastu Energy Balance Imbalance of elements can be corrected by the most subtle & higher element- space while defects in native place can be balanced or rectified using Vastu tools like wind chimes, energy pyramid and crystals. These Vastu tools helps rectifying negative energies and try subtle the ambience with positive prana. Body prana can be instilled by correcting chakras that are responsible for our day to day functions. In such way external prana of cosmos or dwelling place have to make lively by creating balance with energy elements of Vastu.

A mandala (Sanskrit: मण्डल, literally "circle") is a spiritual and ritual symbol in Hinduism and Buddhism, representing the universe.[1] In common use, "mandala" has become a generic term for any diagram, chart or geometric pattern that represents the cosmos metaphysically or symbolically; a microcosm of the universe.
The basic form of most mandalas is a square with four gates containing a circle with a center point. Each gate is in the general shape of a T. Mandalas often exhibit radial balance.

The Shivaistic (Hinduistic) temple-complex of Prambanan is situated some forty kilometers to the east of Borobudur. It matches the beauties of the contemporary Borobudur temple in many respects.

Ragnar’s Keep Review
Recently I was approached by Ian Brockbank (who runs the blog Melestrua’s Musings) with a request to take a look at his published setting location Ragnar’s Keep, available on DriveThruRPG. Despite never having done a review like this before, we learn by doing and so I accepted the free copy he offered and I’m determined to give it as fair of a look as I can offer.
Ragnar’s keep is a 36 page document that details a fully realized and established location for low level adventurers to visit or interact with. It’s not designed as an adventure itself; while plot hooks are provided it doesn’t come with a specifically intended storyline or goal for players to approach. It is a setting location, written to be usable in a wide variety of ways, and to provide a map and location for GMs who are looking for some hard details to build off of. Ian specifically contrasts it to the more generic d100 plot hooks style design, offering up something that requires less improvisation and gives the GM a cast of characters with fully established character motivations, flaws, and relationships with one another and the location. This may limit the use of it in some ways if the specific dynamics don’t fit within the setting already planned, but aspects of it can be picked up or dropped as fits within a specific goal the GM has in mind. The material works for any “standard” fantasy setting based off of medieval Europe with magic, but the given mechanical rules are designed for 5th edition Dungeons and Dragons.
The titular keep is a three and a half level fort with a basement, ground level, second story, and a half third story, along with some extra details in a path leading down to the nearby waterfront. Two different maps are provided for each castle level, one with grid and annotations and the other a detailed illustration created by Heroic Maps. The illustrations are simply gorgeous, and provide a wonderful and deeply immersive location on their own, and are available for purchase as a separate product on DriveThruRPG from the artists directly (link here). Every room is given a detailed description, and a cast of over 20 NPCs fill in all the major roles needed to keep the castle running (along with the castle’s own personal haunting ghost).
The keep and the country around it are given a 1 page backstory detailing how the lands came to be and the political situation it exists within. This information is very specific, creating and naming specific people, locations, gods and a loosely detailed empire that all come together and define many of the keep’s inhabitants and their relationships with one another, and while renaming these details is possible it does keep this from being able to be inserted into any setting without rewriting. The established setting relies heavily on colonial activity to set up tensions between different people, and this could be an aspect of the writing that creates the largest obstacle in using the keep as written. The empire of Thraesya and their goddess Tenesia invaded a formerly independent land by sea, conquering settlements and laying claim to the countryside for its rumored silver deposits and bountiful natural abundance. The native groups were subjugated and made vassals of the empire, but of course it was an unsustainable position as the expected riches were never found. Nearly 80 years after the invasion the empire handed the territory over to a young nobleman who titled himself Grand Duke, named the territory Melkantor and set about ruling it himself. The present day situation is the Grand Duke attempting to forge Melkantor into a unified country, and Ragnar’s Keep itself, overlooking the town Ragnarston and its important position in the only passable trading rout back from Melkantor to Thraesya.
The full description of the castle grounds and rooms takes up 12 pages, and goes into great detail. Every room gets at least a paragraph of description, listing any important details in the design and layout of the room along with its use. Specific inhabitants are described in how and when they may be found in this room. As the castle is meant to be usable for more than just an invasion based adventure, there is more detail on the daily schedule of non-combatants than I’ve typically seen for castles in premade adventure modules, which is useful for games where the characters may integrate themselves deeply into the castle’s life. While few groups will encounter many of these details, those that do will have plenty of fun little secrets and interesting bits of environmental storytelling to reward them. The options here allow a much greater depth of verisimilitude in a wide range of story opportunities, from infiltrating the keep as a member of the serving staff to entering as a guest of the lord or lady to fighting through the halls… either for or against the lord.
The castle is actually incredibly well stocked with magic items, giving a huge reward to groups who have motive to assault or rob it. From the lord’s +2 longsword to the cleric’s staff of healing, new magic items such as the scales of identification and the ring of clairvoyance, plus a large number of uncommon magic items and magic potions scattered among the important NPCs, magic equipment is quite prevalent. It’s enough to well stock a full adventuring party if they clear the place out thoroughly. It’s not necessarily a game breaker, since characters are only likely to gain these items if the GM sets up a reason for them to fight the entire castle, but if a low level group does have reason they’ll come out potentially quite far ahead of the curve, item wise. I do enjoy that one of the junior clerics has a cursed rapier though. He’s a thoroughly unlikable person, and the perfect target for such a thing.
The largest section of the PDF is actually the character roster. Twenty-three NPCs over 13 pages, it details every character who has a hand in running the castle, and those most likely to be relevant in a wide range of stories. The Lord and his family, the heads of the serving staff, captain of the guard, the assigned cleric and his students, the local bard, the castles ghost, and a number of other roles within the castle are detailed. Not every inhabitant is detailed, the regular guards, cooks, cleaning staff and such going unnamed and not even clearly counted. The GM has some leeway in deciding the numbers and composition of these groups, depending on the way they’re making use of the material (though the easiest way would be to just assume that every bed mentioned is filled). The characters that are detailed though cover a wide range of different archetypes and personalities, allowing plenty of opportunities for interesting role playing. Characters could make friends or enemies out of many of the different characters, and several have very forward present story hooks to take advantage of, from the local bard who wants to attract the Lady’s attention, to the wererat butler with a history of theft, to the maid who was aged thirty years by the castle ghost. Most NPCs get unique stat blocks, many built using PC classes, though a number are functionally similar enough that they may have simply pulled from the same one. There’s three level 4 fighters whose stats mostly only differ in a few small ways that don’t necessarily benefit greatly from the space spent on different stat blocks. In this case, the method used in a lot of adventures of taking a more generic stat block and indicating the differences in the text may have been more useful, especially if the text and the generic stat block are kept on the same page.
The plot hooks provided are all solid enough to work off of, mostly positioning the keep as a neutral or friendly force to the players to function around. It could be a home base for the group, a location to collect missions to defend the pass or surrounding countryside, or simply a place that exists nearby and rarely directly influences the characters. Of course, the keep could pose a threat to the group, either if they stand against the colonizing force of the region or other reasons. Breaking in or laying siege to it could be a climactic set piece to a lower level adventure. There’s a few character based plotlines that can function well if the group establishes a notable enough presence within the keep as well.
Two new magic items round out the document, and look fine to me. I will admit, magic item power levels are one part of 5th edition where I have nearly given up attempting to understand the balance of it, but the provided ones are fun, flavorful and interesting to work with. Neither is particularly powerful for a rare item, instead providing information in some capacity. The ring of clairvoyance, well, allows the user to cast clairvoyance at will, though each use after the first in a given day forces a saving throw against exhaustion, and the scales of identification are a weaker 3/day identify spell. A group without access to the spell would definitely appreciate having the scales, even with the weaknesses it has built in.
Overall, I think the castle itself is fantastic. The design is good and the rooms and areas within it have plenty of potential to explore in a wide range of stories and situations. The characters are detailed and many are interesting, with plot hooks easy to build off of the major ones. Where I personally have trouble is with the backstory, and the way that plays onto the NPCs. To put it simply, I have a lot of trouble with using colonial stories within my games, and I do not feel that the material provided gives a strong enough weight to the implications it sets up with that narrative. This is, by my estimate, more meant to be an example of Roman colonization of Britain than Europe to America, but similar implications are still built into it. The colonizing force’s culture and religion are given far more relevance to the setting than the natives’, who exist mostly as scared and nameless servants. The prejudice of the lord and many of the keep’s inhabitants are the driving force of much of their characterization, and the few native characters who are given real merit and weight in the castle are those who have assimilated into the dominant culture or literally died to it. I don’t know if this was intentional as well, but all named native characters are women. Just a weird fact that caught my attention.
Having these narratives in a game is not bad entirely in and of itself. Many people want to examine these stories, whether to overcome that aspect of history or as part of building a world that mirrors our own. But it requires a lot of careful consideration to use them without being harmful towards people who still live under the results of colonization. I am not the best person to make the decision of what is and isn’t good use of these narratives. And so, I personally choose to largely avoid them, along with other examples of real world oppression, unless actually directed there by a member of such a group who wants to explore it in a game I’m running. This means that a large portion of the implied background of this environment and a big part of the character motivations and relationships do not fit within a situation I would use. I feel the specific background set in place by the keep would exclude it from my game, but I would absolutely use the map with a different background.
I don’t have a number out of 10 to give this product, as I feel there are some very strong elements within it that keep me from being able to define it so clearly. There is a lot to enjoy with it, from the artwork to the well realized characters to the excellent design of the castle itself. If you are just looking for a good castle map with detailed interior descriptions and at the minimum a good starting point for the inhabitants, it fills that perfectly. I think beyond that it’s up to you to decide whether the backstory elements that bothered me are a breaking point for you as well. If you are interested in checking out Ian’s work, you can purchase it here, which will get you $2 off of the standard price. This link is valid until the end of 2019, so you have two and a half months to act on this deal.

Top Ten: Paris
April in Paris
Next week, after the holidays are well and truly over, I will be publishing my annual survey of the Top Ten Stories in the World of D&O for 2018. In the meantime, during the holidays, I have been posting a series of alternative Top Ten lists. Yesterday, I posted my list of top ten things to see and do in London. Today, I am publishing my list of the top ten things to see and do in my all-time favorite city, Paris.
I have been to Paris many times and have strong views about the place, as my list below reflects. There are also a number of obvious omissions from the list below, as well. Most first time visitors to the city know they want to see the Eiffel Tower, the Louvre, the Musée d’Orsay, Notre Dame, Sacré-Cœur, and the Arc de Triomphe. Every first time visitor to Paris should definitely see all of these sites. Just the same, I have left these top destinations off of my list, to make room for some other destinations that might or might not make their way on to visitors’ itineraries. I have set out my list below. Please also see the additional top ten list below, as well.
10. Place des Voges: An atmospheric square located in the Marais district and built in the early 17th century, this beautiful brick residential development built along harmonious and uniform lines is now a quiet retreat. On a sunny day, it is great just to visit the Place and to stroll around the square or to take in the atmosphere on one of the benches, and then afterwards leave the square by the southern archway and walk down to the Rue Saint-Antoine enjoy one of the many sidewalk cafés along the way.
The statute of Louis XIII in the square at Place des Voges
9. Le Grande Epicerie: The Grand Epicerie is a food emporium adjacent to the famous Le Bon Marché department store. The grocery store has several floors of gourmet foods and beverages. The place is frankly a little bit dazzling but it is a lot of fun just to walk around in and to look around. There are several dining counters in the store where you can sample a wide variety of foods, but the best thing to is select an array of foods to take away, and then to enjoy a picnic meal in the Square Boucicaut, in front of the department store’s main entrance.
8. Fondation Louis Vuitton: The Fondation is one of the newest museums in Paris. The modern art exhibits in the museum change all of the time, but in any event the real reason to visit the museum is to see its dramatic exterior and fascinating interior design. The beautiful building was designed by famous architect Frank Geary. It is also beautifully situated within the Bois de Boulogne. There are a number of terraces within the museum affording views of the park and the city. An interesting place to visit.
7. Buttes Chaumont: In far northeastern Paris, far off of the tourist grid, is the Parc des Buttes Chaumont, a huge park with a manmade lake, a picturesque temple perched on steep hilltop, and a series of wide promenades. The lake was built on the site of a former gypsum quarry. A stone grotto with a waterfall adjoins the lake. For someone interested in seeing a different part of the city, this park is a great place for strolling and on a sunny day for people watching.
6. Village St-Paul: In the middle of the Marais district and just off of Rue Saint-Antoine, behind the St. Paul church, is a quiet, hidden district of narrow streets and alleyways. The area has the feel of a small rural village. It is full of antique shops and of small cafés and restaurants. This quiet area is a very special secret place, only steps away from a busy avenue but entirely off of the tourist grid. Don’t tell anybody else about this place, it will just be our little secret.
The Apse of St-Paul,viewed from within the village
5. Île Saint-Louis: At some point, most visitors to Paris make their way to the Notre Dame Cathedral on the Île de la Cité. Not many visitors cross over the footbridge behind Notre Dame leading to the adjacent island, the Île Saint-Louis. The smaller island is only a few steps away but it might as well be in a different city. By contrast to the busy, tourist-crowded streets around Notre Dame, the streets on Île Saint-Louis are calm and quiet. The island is a great place for a leisurely lunch after touring around Notre Dame, or anytime you want a quiet meal away from the crowd. The residential streets are beautiful and the walkways along the waterside afford great views of the river, of Notre Dame, and of the city nearby.
The Île Saint-Louis in the foreground, with Notre Dame in the background
4. Saint-Germain-des-Prés: Notre Dame is more famous, but the Abbey of Saint-Germain-des-Prés on the Left Bank is older and more atmospheric. There often are concerts in the old church, and if you are willing to attend a service in French, it is a great place to take in a mass on Sunday morning. Across the square from the main entrance to the church is the famous Les Deux Magots café, whose famous patrons have included Simone de Beauvoir, Jean-Paul Sartre, Albert Camus, Pablo Picasso, and James Joyce. After a beverage at the café, stroll around the neighborhood and along the Boulevard Saint-Germain, it is one of the great districts in the city.
3. Canal Saint-Martin: The Canal Saint-Martin is part of the series of canals linking Paris to distant rivers bringing freshwater to the city. The Canal remains a working canal. A series of locks allow barges to make their way down to the Seine River. Walkways line the canal and bridges cross back and forth, affording great viewpoints from which to watch barges make their way through the locks. The Canal is not far from the Marais but just the same it is pretty much completely off of the tourist grid. On a sunny day the Canal is about as special of a place to stroll as there is in all of the city.
2. Rue Mouffetard: The Rue Mouffetard is a very special street away the busier environs of the Latin Quarter. At the northern end of the street at the top of Mont Sainte-Geneviève is the Place de la Contrescarpe, a large quiet square ringed with cafes and brasseries that has something of a small village feel. The Rue Mouffetard itself which is lined with small shops selling wine, cheese, tea, clothing and books – has rolled downhill toward the south since the Roman era. The area is also now laced with student bars, including one called (I am not making this up) “Student Bar.” A great way to end an afternoon in Paris is to stroll down to the bottom of the Rue Mouffetard and then back up the hill for a cool beverage at a sidewalk café in the Place de la Contrescarpe. (The Place made my list of the ten great places to have a beer.)

1. Jardin du Luxembourg: Paris is a great city full of beautiful places to visit, but in the entire city, as far as I am concerned, the most beautiful and the one most worth seeing is the Jardin du Luxembourg. The Jardin made my previously published list of top urban parks – but it is more than that. It is the place that most embodies the spirit of the city. The most essential Parisian spirits inhabit the gardens, where romantic couples slowly promenade and little children sailing their boats in the central fountain shout happily “Regardez, Maman! Regardez!” There is no better place anywhere for a stroll, to enjoy the view, to take in the air, to walk the many others enjoying the atmosphere, to feel fortunate that you have been able to travel to Paris, just to see and walk in the Jardin.
A Picture Gallery: I admit that more than once I have made wise-cracks about people who post pictures of their food on social media. Over time, these kinds of remarks have turned me into a hypocrite, because the fact is that over time I have posted lots of pictures of food in various travel posts. Sometimes, food is an interesting and even an important part of the experience in some travel locations. I have taken lots of pictures of my meals as I have traveled around. Here are some of my favorites below.
Uma feijoada, in São Paulo, Brazil (the traditional black bean and pork stew — in this picture, the beans are in the ceramic bowl).
A traditional meal of Tatties, Neeps, and Haggis ( potatoes, turnips, and haggis), in a pub in Edinburgh
When I travel alone in Germany, I often have trouble with the menu. No matter what I order, I wind up with breaded pork cutlets. In a lunch restaurant in Frankfurt, I decided to ask the waiter what he recommended. He suggested the daily special; I said OK. When it arrived, it was a big sausage on a pile of green mush, with some potatoes. Next time, the pork cutlet.
In fairness, I have had some enjoyable meals in Germany. This tasty (albeit heavy) meal of turkey ham, scalloped potatoes, sausage, and salad was at the Gröninger Privatbrauerei in Hamburg Aldstadt.
There are a lot of great reasons to visit Mumbai, but among the best reasons is the amazing food. Here’s a picture of one of my breakfasts, a serving of Uttapam (a rice batter pancake with a variety of cooked-in ingredients and a number of accompanying relishes and spices).
Smoked salmon and champagne at the Oyster Bar in the Food Hall at Harrod’s in London
A Bibimbap at a small family restaurant in Seoul. (That is, a bowl of warm white rice topped with namul, gochujang, and soy sauce, with a fried egg on top).
At a shabu-shabu restaurant in Tokyo (the name shabu-shabu is onomatopoeic and refers to the sound made when the beef and vegetables are swished back in forth in the pot of boiling water).
An octopus at a fado club in Lisbon. (Yes, I ate the whole thing).
This is a picture taken at a wonderful dinner at my good friend Aruno Rajaratnam’s house in Singapore. The menu included brown basmati rice with ghee and lemongrass; lentils with thavasi, long beans, and broccoli; chicken marinated with ground herbs and spices; prawns cooked with red chilies and tomato chutney; cabbage cooked with turmeric and herbs; and cucumber salad with yogurt spiced dressing.. Many of the herbs and spices were from Aruno’s garden.

RUSSIAN CIRCLES ANNOUNCE THEIR NEW ALBUM, ‘BLOOD YEAR,' & NORTH AMERICAN TOUR
The formidable trio’s seventh studio album will be released on August 2 via Sargent House. Check out the first single “Arluck” now.
"Russian Circles have made great use of post-rock most familiar's dynamic tricks—loud and quiet; stop and start, swell and subside. But they’ve never had qualms about splicing elements of everything from metal and noise-rock to krautrock and post-hardcore into their darkly dramatic, instrumental compositions." - Pitchfork
There are few things one can be sure of these days, though one truism that remains is that Russian Circles will continue to reign as one of instrumental music’s supreme champions. These masters of sonic tension and release plan to deliver their seventh studio album August 2nd on Sargent House. Dubbed Blood Year, the LP is less a musical exploration and more a statement of authority, lest there be any doubt that Russian Circles remain a force to be reckoned with on the stage and in the studio.
Listen to “Arluck,” the first glimpse of Russian Circle’s forthcoming Blood Year LP, now on YouTube.
The Chicago trio have always explored the dynamics of volume and timbre, with their albums often vacillating between caustic attacks and blissful respites. Russian Circles returned to the studio withKurt Ballou to record Blood Year, but this time they tracked it in Chicago at Steve Albini’s world-famous Electrical Audio. From guitarist Mike Sullivan’s riff-fueled assaults, to Dave Turncrantz’s war machine rack and floor toms and Brian Cook’s meat grinding bass lines, the sound of Blood Year is that of a band unafraid to flaunt their hard-earned prowess.
Sullivan, Turncrantz, and Cook made a conscious effort to approach the songs on Blood Year with the same organic feel of a live show. In an age where rock records are often built on a computerized grid, Russian Circles chose to track the foundations of the songs together in one room as complete takes without click tracks. The human pulse and unmetered energy is woven throughout Blood Year, a presence that can be felt with each bone-rattling minute.
Blood Year will be released via Sargent House on August 2 and Russian Circles will be on tour in North America this September, October and November in support of it. FACS and Windhand will appear on select dates — check out all tour dates listed below.
Blood Year is available for pre-order here. Stay tuned for more news.

Valkery Maria
I need you to fathom what we must do,
We sold maps today, because the Wimbledon children, were at a loss, thinking, they did have enough to spare,
The Eastern Seaboard, you see, is afflicted with Astronomical Tides,
and, the Clean Water is all the way up near Ninavut, by the outlet to Labrador Sea where, Hall Peninsula and the new continent has its outlet,
no look at the Mississippi River and it’s rich in Economic Areas, from New Orleans, and to the Mississippi Delta to the St Paul Area, and we can make something of the canal and dike systems of Memphis, where Rhodes is based, of which I am dean of French Studies,
we must look at regridding, Bolivia, Colombia, Peru, and Ecuador peace annexes and service areas, left of Guyiane Perfecture,
look at these because, we must have an alternative for the grand exit of Latin American and American Refugees as well from The Eastern Seaboard, blocked by poor water supply,
I’ve contacted Paul Zunkuft and Christies as well,
the amount we’ll get is 50 mln per head of house hold, and the taxes that we all pay will cover the operational expenses.
You’re next to take over the rotation, Valkery Maria,
Val herself, the Queen of Scotland, is covering you as we do this operation,
we need the Yard, at first instance, with an Annex as first sample rail....
Rhodes is at Memphis, we have annex at St Paul, we have cells there,
work on it...
Activate Annex B for Sample Set, Valkery....make sure we have something self sustaining,
you can add on to what we have...
What is in annex B?
Iowa Writers Circle, Reed, University of Missouri, Purdue, University of Michigan, IUSB, WUSTL, make sure you make the proper connections,
and, Monterrey and LSU .....and Pending is University of Texas San Antonio and Tulane,
Valkery,
find a self sustaining campus, and grid....create a MICHIANA Line for COVER 2 of Terminal Food Markets -- we must learn from whats going on as Daven Port was a scare of our lives.
Bring them in, near the Terminal Food Markets. And begin Creation of another,
Annex A
is the following
Rhodes, Whitewater, inclusive of the Coast Guard Academy, Northwestern Drama and Geography School, MENA, MEDILL, et al, and Veterinary School, Monmouth, Murcia, Sourbonne, University of Copenhagen -- with detachments at Montana Writing and Alaska, and IIT...engineering, design, architecture and law.
Northwestern has the Smithsonian School of Geography (Medical and Economic Geography) attached to it is the Veterinary School,
and the Dramas Justin B Ocampo Writing Program for the whole annex,
The Entire Annex is known as the Ghandi Peace Institute Annex,
Secretly we have for the whole annex, Sir Hillary Edmund, Mississippi, and Wood School --as the military academy
Overall, a forty year program, you may stay as you like meet me at the cafe, meet each other where ever the thought occurs,
the baptism, is the triathlon, slow cooked...
it is a writing program, our weapon, is the pen
Our club, is the audobon club...and with the all england club
It’s a little hazy but, they’re all connected, somehow,
You might not realize it, but, it’s a legionnaire program, and a yard program,
a long program that in the end, they’ll be mcgyvers in the long run,
I want them wearing work gloves in winter and triathlon gloves in summer
while the do their slow cooked triathlon...that is the baptism...
Valkery, make the connections
...we also deal with mergers, with shares of AXA Assistance, ROCHE, Marianos, Duty Free, Target, Wesson, Cross and Parker, Speedo, Mountain Warehouse, Swissotel, MB FInancial, Neiman Marcus, et al..and
we’ll stop here
With Love,

Where to go on holiday in September, from Chile to Canada
Time to turn over a new leaf with an out-of-the-ordinary early-autumn escape. Think: South American skiing, Canada’s heavenly lakes or a music festival in the Italian mountains.
Here are the best places to escape to in September.
Trentino, Italy
We’ll tell you what’s true. You can form your own view.
From 15p €0.18 $0.18 USD 0.27 a day, more exclusives, analysis and extras.

The Sounds of the Dolomites is performed at 2,000 metres above sea level (Paolo Bisti Luconi)
The hills are well and truly alive with music in Italy’s north east this month, as the Sounds of the Dolomites (until 15 September) returns for its 25th year of open-air concerts – everything from classical music to jazz to folk – held in stunning mountaintop spots, reachable only on foot. Think: grand pianos played in open meadows and steel drum bands filling a ravine, and new for 2019, the first entire opera to be performed at 2,000 metres above sea level. Regional capital Trento is also a delight, where Renaissance palaces and piazzas meet apple strudels and beer halls that show the influence of Austria. Cyclists will be in their element around here, with 400km of paved biking paths fanning out from the town. For an upmarket “base camp”, stay at Hotel Costabella (rooms from £92) beside the San Pellegrino Pass.
Average temperature in September: 21°C Flight time: 1h 45m (to Milan)
Marrakech, Morocco
Find some of Morocco’s best food and crafts in Marrakesh’s busy Medina (iStock)
Marrakech makes escapism so darn easy, its labyrinthine spice-scented souks and Moorish palaces lying less than four hours from the UK, with no time difference. Hardly surprisingly, then, that the city’s popularity continues to surge – American Express reports travel bookings have increased 89 per cent year over year – and Instagram is awash with people posing against Jardin Majorelle’s cobalt-blue walls or the prettily-tiled courtyard pool of Riad Yasmine (rooms from £138). “Marrakech taught me colour,” the iconic designer Yves Saint Laurent once said, and fittingly the city now has an excellent museum exhibiting the French fashion legend’s finest creations. September has the advantage of comfortably cooler temperatures, yet still balmy enough to linger in pavement cafes after dark for mint tea and mezze, after checking out the snake charmers and contortionists in Jemaa el-Fnaa square. Meanwhile, just outside the city, two cool electronic music festivals, Atlas Electronic (28 August-2 September) and Oasis (13-15 September), are taking place against a backdrop of the Atlas Mountains.
Average temperature in September: 27°C Flight time: 3h 40m
Valparaiso, Chile
Inca Lake is surrounded by ski slopes (Brent Jacoby)
Skiing in September? Absolutely – it’s prime time to hit the slopes in the Andes. Its top-rated resort, Portillo, is just a couple of hours from Santiago and offers gloriously uncrowded slopes, with plenty of runs for beginners and seasoned skiers alike. The resort has one – fortunately, excellent – hotel option, Ski Portillo, its sunny yellow building sitting pretty at 2,880m (seven-night stays from £1,893, including lodging, meals, lift pass and more). There’s a huge hot tub for soaking weary muscles along with the bonus of ski-in ski-out accommodation. And well, if the slopes are good enough for the US, Canadian, Norwegian and Austrian National Ski Teams to train on, who are we to argue? Tie in with a couple of nights in Santiago for the perfect city-meets-snow escape.
Average temperature in September: -2°C Flight time: 14h 35m
West Ireland
View across the water to Galway City (iStock)
Tuck into the spoils of the North Atlantic coast at a Taste of West Cork (6-15 September) and Galway International Oyster and Seafood Festival (27-29 September), marking the beginning of the native oyster harvest – the latter hosts the World Oyster Opening Championships (honestly, it’s a thing) plus parades, and plenty of stout and champagne to sip with your shellfish. Harbour town Galway is known for its arty bohemian scene, and also, increasingly, as a champion of organic, farm-to-fork cooking, the pinnacle of which has to be Michelin-starred Loam’s seasonal tasting menus.
But of course the biggest draw for most heading to south-west Ireland is the sensational coastal scenery: driving along the Wild Atlantic Way, you’ll constantly encounter windswept castles and vast sand beaches, as well as megalithic tombs older than the pyramids at The Burren, craggy, myth-infused isles like Skellig Michael, and the country’s biggest colony of Atlantic grey seals at Blacksod Bay. Break up the exhilarating journey by spending the night in a lighthouse (Irish Landmark has several rentals) or splash out on Relais & Chateaux’s Sheen Falls Lodge in Kenmare Bay.
Average temperature in September: 17°C Flight time: 2h 40m
Alberta, Canada
Calgary is Canada’s up-and-coming city (Getty)
Did you hear? Calgary is getting cool; traditionally put down as Alberta’s bland business capital, a necessary jumping-off point for visiting the Rockies, now neighbourhoods like Inglewood and Kensington are hubs for craft beer breweries, indie boutiques and experimental art galleries. Get your bearings (and mountain views) from the 191m Calgary Tower, rising above the easily walkable grid layout of the city centre, before soaking up the early-autumn sunshine in Prince’s Island Park and cluing up on First Nations history at the Glenbow Museum.
The brand-new Residence Inn Calgary (rooms from £82 per night) is a handy downtown base, nodding to Calgary’s country-western heritage with its cowboy boot stitching design details. Outside the city, Banff National Park beckons, with its jaw-dropping glacial lakes-meet-mountains views and endless forest hiking trails; in September, it’s still plenty mild enough to kayak on Lake Louise and catch the larch trees’ leaves turning a bright golden yellow.
Average temperature in September: 16°C Flight time: 11h

Barbecue Accessories Market to Garner Maximum Revenues by 2025
Barbecues are designed with a metal tray to hold the wood or charcoal and with a gridiron above it to hold the meat or vegetables. As the market developed, there are more models featuring accessories such as grill levels and spits for turning the meat. Earlier, grills tended to be small so that they could be packed up and easily taken for outdoor picnics. However, bigger size barbecues were created as the market grew and with more demand for barbecues. The food truck industry is also growing and most of them today use compact barbecues, which they can take along. As more and more customers are looking to cook outdoors for enjoyment, manufacturers are launching new and advanced products to make cooking easy—from appetizers to dessert—irrespective of the customer’s location. When spending the day outdoors, it is important to have everything one needs at easy reach.
New inventions such as countertops with drawer storage and drink coolers make it easy to enjoy outdoor parties. With full sinks, refrigerators and lighting, all amenities of the indoor kitchen can be brought outdoors. Grills with cook boxes made of a denser stainless steel retain heat better. These cook boxes take a long time to heat up; however, once they reach the preferred temperature, they maintain it well, even when their lids are opened for a few minutes while checking on the food. Grills made with thinner steel are less efficient as they lose heat through the lid, leading to drier, overcooked meat.
Barbecue accessories include pizza ovens, barbecue tools, outdoor oven cooking tables, steel skewers, hot dog and sausage grill baskets, brush and flavoring pots, mesh grill toppers, ceramic grill grids, skillets, meat thermometers, terracotta pizza ovens, grill cleaning tools, grill covers, grill attachments, baskets, racks and toppers, barbeque gloves, cutlery and knives.

The main drivers of this market are change in lifestyle of people and the change in eating patterns. Consumers are keen on trying new techniques of cooking food such as barbecue as it enhances the taste of the food. The only restraint of this market is high price of the accessories. As barbecue food has great demand, the equipment and accessories are also expensive. A barbecue setup needs open space for smoke to be exhausted; a barbecue is difficult to setup in compact and closed spaces. This market has great opportunity for growth as the number of restaurants and hotels are increasing and more people are opting for barbecue food. Over the five-year period from 2012-2017, growth in the barbecue and grill manufacturing industry has progressively augmented with the exception.
The most important factors of growth for the barbecue industry are establishment of brand names, market research, and understanding and development of new products. However, the dominance of existing operators creates a significant barrier for new entrants to establish links with key suppliers and buyers. Potential entrants face relatively large start-up costs to establish manufacturing facilities.
The barbecue accessories market is segmented by type, application, and region. There are different types of barbecue accessories such as cooking accessories, prep & serve accessories, care/maintenance tools, and other accessories. There are two applications of barbecue accessories - commercial or residential. The global barbecue accessories market has been analyzed for five geographic regions namely Asia Pacific (China, Japan, India, and South Korea), Europe (Germany, France, Italy, and the U.K.), North America (Canada, Mexico, and the U.S.), South America (Brazil and Argentina) and Middle East & Africa (MEA). North America holds the major share of the barbecue accessories market.
The barbecue accessories market is huge, dominated by many key players such as Weber, Napoleon, Char-Broil, Coleman, Kenmore, Blackstone, Char-Griller, Landmann, Lifestyle, Grand Hall, Outdoor Chef, Global Sources, Broil King Signet, Broil King Baron, and KitchenAid.
