The Norse: We have a comprehensive writing system.
Their descendants: Please write down your mythology and history and overall traditions!!
The Norse: Fuck you! *uses the writing system almost exclusively for fancy gravestones*
Imagine how much historical knowledge wasn’t written down because our ancestors thought: “What idiot isn’t going to know this?”
#history#archeology#look the gravestones have at least told us a bit of the migration patterns to England#the so called ‘England stones’ are all about locals who went to England and died there#but all our written sources on Norse mythology is post christianization#most history come from sagas#which is sort of like if you had to depend on Shakespeare plays for history#Sweden becoming a country or a united people has a date of who knows?#we’ve like narrowed it down to somewhere within a few centuries#and early historical records were filled with fictional kings#hence why actual kings got their numerals wrong#so in those cases it were people writing down things that were wrong but politically convenient by ‘tracing’ a king’s line back to the Bible#which was the style at the time#where was I?#oh yeah#write down your boring day and take all the selfies and food pictures#your friends will be annoyed while future historians will praise your name#also Cicero apparently wrote a lot including recipes

Merry Christmas everyone!
In Sweden, we celebrate on Christmas Eve: we watch classic old Disney shorts at 3 pm (a tradition since 1960), and then we start with food, and eat together, and then after dinner, SANTA shows up to deliver the presents (often when someone in the family have CONVENIENTLY gone out to buy the newspaper ... it's sad, really, how they keep missing Santa every year ... :p).

asking for help from fellow eu ppl on my dash - jobs, studies, place to live.
apparently the """easiest""" way for yasmin to get a swedish spouse visa would be if both of us leave sweden for 6 months, live in another eu country together as a married couple, and then when we re-enter sweden theres apparently a eu law thing that forces sweden to give her a spouse visa since we were already living together in another eu country. (so this is a legal way for poor ppl to get around the money requirement of the regular swedish spouse visa.)
problem is, it means finding a job or uni studies in another eu country so we can move there. we have no savings, no money. either of us could get a job and then move together, if we found a job (i have basically no resume and no degree, but i am an eu citizen so i dont need a work visa, therefore could theoretically do simple work if im able within my handicap - yasmin prob needs a specialist work visa using her design degree).
uni studies would only work if its free for me in that country (eu citizen), then i could potentially study something for 6 months, and hopefully get student money from the government to pay for food (and we need to find a place with cheap rent). in general this whole concept is really difficult when youre as poor as we are (aka barely money for food rn).
if anyone of you knows that its free for me (eu citizen) to study in your country and if you could help me with finding potential uni classes and a place for us to live for a few months, and help with other questions/info about the moving process, please let me know.
if anyone has tips on jobs yasmin could apply for in your eu country, pls let us know - stuff like concept artist or other related to illustration, design, graphics. (since shes not an eu citizen your country might require her job to be specialist to get a work visa, aka use her design/art skills.) and if you could help us with questions and information about the move and finding a place to live as i said above, pls let us know too.
i really wish we lived in a world where someone of you just happen to have an uncle who runs a farm and could pay me minimum wage to help out at the farm for 6 months, bc i could do that. but those kind of things are impossible to find. i really dont know if we can succeed with this eu spouse concept, but im just trying to look into it as much as i can bc we have so few options.
the easiest option rn would be if she gets a job with her degree in finland bc its nearby and i dont even need to do anything as a nordic citizen, i can move there no questions asked. and then we would be in a eu country together + i dont have to push my disabled health to work hard + its easier to move there bc its close. but we're gonna try to look into all eu countries, even if nordics (easy move for me) or germany (i speak some german) or ireland (since we both speak english) are the most convenient options.
if my posts seem stressed and unhinged thats bc i am!!! i dont want my fiance to be sent back to a shit country at war where there is danger!!!! i dont want to be separated from her at all for any reason either!!!!! we are just having a really really horrible time about how to solve our near future!!!!

Back from my Scandi vacation!
Felt like I took it for granted leaving my brain back in SG and letting Ax do the planning and the navigating. I brought my spirits though! Spending my day off today looking back at the trip which was such a great use of my time. Really appreciating this extra day off after my vacation.
Some tips for Norway and Denmark travels first
1. It's cashless even in the small towns. Cash was more of a liability as it forced us to spend it all
2. Hotels cost as much as Airbnb for 2 pax so opt for hotels as there's guaranteed shampoo, soap, hair dryer, heating and laundry. Most of our airbnbs were missing soap or shampoo which we didn't bring any of, in order to travel lighter. The bnbs we stayed in were also commercialised houses so there's absolutely no feelings attached. Checking in and out would also be more convenient with hotels. We had to return one of our keys from a convenience store which wasn't open in the early morning, in time for our flight.
3. Groceries are marked down on Friday if they expire Monday. If you're in Norway, go to Kiwi or Coop for basic groceries as it seemed to be the cheapest. However, each shop will hv their own discounts (not standardised across the same chain). Eg. We went to a place with 40% discounts on Freia choc which was only available at a particular store.
4. Northern lights chase was the coldest we experienced. Basically, the guide said that if its frost on the floor, it's worse than snow as there's no insulation for your feet. Not the coldest real temperature but coldest we felt. Bring extra clothes and heatpack just in case. The bonfire didn't do anything for me because it's too cold. We went with GuideGunnar which updates its aurora sightings on a daily basis. These guys are crazy and would bring you as far as Sweden just to chase the lights so bring your passports along! They also offer a 50% off the next trip if you don't see it on the day.
5. There's no heat packs there so bring them from home.
6. In Copenhagen, we recommend the Copenhagen card. It's only 65USD for 24hrs and you get free transport, museum pass and boat rides. We only decided to get the card after our boat ride which cost about SGD25-30, which was already a quarter the cost of the card. In Copenhagen, checking of bus tickets was a regular thing.
7. Useful apps for riding public transport: Oslo uses Ruter, Tromsø uses Troms billet, Copenhagen uses Dot tickets. Ticket checking was not very often in Norway. We did not cycle as it felt too cold for more wind to hit our faces.
8. Skip Oslo if you dw to visit a city. We spent 3 nights there and it felt too long. We wanted to do our last minute shopping at Oslo but everything was expensive throughout the whole trip that we started to buy souvenirs earlier when we saw marked down prices. With one more day in Tromsø, we could've gone whale watching.
9. Take into account daylight savings from 29/10. You have 1 more extra hour to sleep but your days are much shorter. We slept a lot because of the cold, about 10hrs of sleep each day and it felt just right.
10. Personally I would have brought instant noodles as the food there isn't flavoured with the same umami as I'm used to. I would also bring a thermal flask there to enjoy my hikes even more, taking a comfortable and warm rest at the peak.
11. If driving, please remember to pay for parking. There's usually a machine to start your parking. Otherwise, the fine is 660NOK. Don't let the rental company settle it as it'll still be billed to you with an extra fee. We would also recommend full insurance since we aren't used to left hand driving and Norway is famous for its narrow roads (at least from Stavanger to Odda where we drove).
12. We used waze for driving and it seemed that speed cameras are only in tunnels but nobody was following the speed limit anyway.
That's about all of the suggestions Ax and I thought of!
Hope these suggestions come in useful for someone.

◎ 𝙸𝙼𝙿𝙾𝚁𝚃𝙰𝙽𝚃 𝙷𝙴𝙰𝙳𝙲𝙰𝙽𝙾𝙽𝚂 𝚃𝙾 𝙲𝙾𝙽𝚂𝙸𝙳𝙴𝚁
CAN THEY USE CHOPSTICKS? Kirk enjoys a nice lunch of sushi from time to time and while he's not the most skilled chopstick user, his fingers are deft and articulate enough to allow him halfway decent usage. He prefers using a fork whenever he can (or even just use his fingers as they do in Japan) but as long as the food tastes good, he won't complain either way. He's quite the fan of chinese cuisine as well.
WHAT DO THEY DO WHEN THEY CAN’T SLEEP. It's not so much that Kirk can't sleep... rather that his research consumes him and before he knows it, the sun is rising and he's spent the whole night working again. On rare occasions when he does get to bed at a reasonable hour, he'll get dressed and go for a walk should sleep elude him, bundling up in warm clothing before paying a visit to the closest convenience store in order to pick up a few things he might be missing or Gotham Park in hopes of spotting a few bats flying around. He'll take his notebook along for the latter journey, jotting down a few key points such as how many bats he can see, how healthy they are and anything else of interest such as species, behavioural patterns, how they're faring in their local environment and what could be done to improve life for them here in the city. They may not be the same bats he uses in his research but Kirk still cares about all species of animals and is an avid environmentalist despite the gloom and pollution of Gotham's industrial facilities.
WHAT ORDER DO THEY WASH THINGS IN THE SHOWER. Starts with his hair first. Kirk turns on the shower and climbs in straight away, not minding the cold water spraying across his skin before lathering up a generous dose of shampoo and working it into his roots. While that gets to work, he'll take a bar of soap and scrub his body all over, starting underneath his arms, then his stomach, between his legs and working his way further down until his skin is thoroughly soaped before rinsing off under the shower's flow. He may apply a second application of shampoo and conditioner, liking his hair to be as clean as possible before finishing up and drying off.
WHAT’S THEIR COFFEE ORDER. ANYTHING SWEET. Seriously, Kirk loves creamy drinks such as frappuccinos, mocha lattes and the like! He'll always request his beverages to come with extra whipped cream, caramel drizzle - anything that sounds sweet and oh so unhealthy for you and would absolutely finish up work early just to be able to go out and order something with pumpkin spice as soon as it's avaliable. He doesn't normally consume such sugary treats other than prinsesstårta when visiting family in Sweden so creamy drinks can really comfort him when the weather is bad or he's feeling low.
HOW DO THEY ACT AROUND CHILDREN. Very patient and understanding. Kirk is definitely a family man at heart and has several younger relatives, not to mention children of his own in some canon depictions so it stands to reason he's equipped to handle kids and would treat them as well as his parents treated him while growing up which is to say a lot. He doesn't mind how rambunctious children can be nor how inquisitive their little minds are - young people need to learn and mistakes are one way that happens, so he would rarely lose his temper unless they did something incredibly stupid/dangerous, or pointlessly cruel. Even then, his anger would be more of a cold disappointment than fury, openly remarking on how he thought they were better than that. All in all, Kirk would be a respectful adult, neither berating a child nor talking down to them. Instead he'd be keen to help them learn with whatever they're interested in, knowing how important education is to a child's future. He's a very good uncle to his own young relatives, keeping contact with them even though he lives in another country altogether.
WHAT WOULD THEY WATCH ON TV WHEN THEY’RE BORED AND NOTHING THEY REALLY LIKE IS ON. He's not much of a television watcher. The news is full of doom and gloom, making it rather depressing to watch even on the best of days. It's also hard to find suitable channels for the hearing-impaired and while his cochlear implants are sound, he can't help but be a little disconnected from it all anyway. He might watch some older reruns from years ago and if he's got time, watch foreign movies where subtitles are absolutely necessary in order to understand what's going on. Kirk's just not the sort of man who'd waste precious time watching cheesy shows unless spending quality time with somebody who does enjoy that sort of thing.

Put me on the "I find this custom strange and difficult to understand" bench.
In the environment I grew up in, the way that such an interaction would work is that the host child asks their parent, "Can so-and-so stay over for dinner?" And the parent can either say yeah, sure, or no, it's time for them to go home. Getting a "no" to this request is accepted and likely, so even if a lack of extra food is the reason for the "no," it isn't putting the parents in an awkward spot where they have to spell out what the problem is.
(This would be for if you're hanging out and all of the sudden it's meal time; if your friend has been given permission to invite you over for a set period of time, it would be assumed to include in invitation to any meals taking place during that time. On the other hand, if a kid asks, "Can so-and-so come over?" while the parent is preparing dinner, the normal answer would be "they can come after dinner.")
So, experiences are not universal, and all that, but I'm trying to figure out what kind of differences in the social circumstances would lead to "just have your child's guest sit somewhere while the family eats" seeming like the natural and obvious solution. Some guesses:
Are kids just randomly showing up at each others' homes, without permission or prearrangement? If that's the case, I can kind of see it--especially in a cold climate, it's more hospitable to let them wait inside the house for the other kid to be available, rather than sending them home/telling them to come back in a bit.
Is the communication style so indirect (and the taboo against the hard no so strong) that the host child can't ask if so-and-so can stay to dinner, or that parents wouldn't be able to say no if they did? Like, you have to just sit in your friend's room pretending you don't know they're having dinner, because any acknowledgement that you are also a person who eats would put them in a position where they have no choice but to bankrupt themselves feeding you?
Are mealtimes so varied, in Sweden, that the fact that your family is eating a meal does not in any way signal or suggest that your child's friend might also be interested in eating something around this time?
None of these seem entirely convincing, but if this is a widespread custom, there has to be some lens through which it snaps into focus.
Like, it isn't so much the part where it's not always convenient/practical/doable at all to feed your kid's friends--that happens everywhere, for a variety of reasons, including meal-planning practices and the cost of food--but the part where they're still in your house during the meal that's striking me as deeply unusual.
(Edited b/c I mixed up which of the two countries mentioned was the one the original anecdote came from.)
I hate how white people invented the we don’t owe each other anything mindset

Market Segmentation:
By Product Type: The almond milk segment is expected to hold the largest share of the market in 2024. Its lower saturated fat content further enhances its appeal.
By Flavor: Chocolate-flavored vegan yogurt is anticipated to capture the largest share in 2024. This is largely due to shifting consumer preferences, especially among younger demographics like children and young adults, who prefer indulgent yet healthier options like chocolate-flavored yogurt.
By Distribution Channel: Supermarkets and hypermarkets are expected to dominate the vegan yogurt market in 2024, driven by their convenience, wide product range, and dedicated shelf space for vegan products. Consumer interest in checking product ingredients also supports this trend.

My First Love In The Summer Of 1969
A couple of times previously, here, at Tumblr, while focusing on one or more movies, I have mentioned a gap or divide involving characters from successive generations. Members of the two generations often don't get along with each other -- in day-to-day situations, whether in public, or in private.
I mentioned this in my discussion of the Hollywood movie CHANGES and in my discussion of the produced-in-Great Britain movie SOME PEOPLE. A gap or divide between generations was also evident to me in the Italian language movie BEFORE THE REVOLUTION. In that movie, it was part of the characters from the younger generation's thinking and behavior. In my discussion of that movie, I focused on the alienation of one of the main characters named Fabrizio.
These movies were all from the 1960's. CHANGES debuted in New York City on February 11, 1969, and subsequently played in theaters throughout this country. SOME PEOPLE debuted in London on July 17, 1962, and subsequently played in theaters throughout the United Kingdom. BEFRE THE REVOLUTION debuted in Milan on October 2, 1964, and gradually played in theaters throughout Italy (dates and placed courtesy of the Internet Movie Database).
To this group of three movies, I should add BEAT GIRL which I also wrote about. This is another movie from the United Kingdom that played in theaters, starting in December, 1959.
All four of these movies present characters who don't accept many of the values and beliefs of the older, previous generation, sometimes even showing their resentment towards older characters.
People who love studying history -- including yours truly -- learn pretty quickly that the divide or gap between the generations has been constant in the history of mankind, going back to the start of organized societies, centuries upon centuries before the time of Jesus Christ. As an example, check out the epic poem Gilgamesh.
What interests me about this subject is that in some countries, some people will actually try to bridge the gap. I don't recall anyone, here in the U.S. publicly trying to do so in the 1960's; i.e., turn a negative situation into a positive one. The fact that I can't cite a name suggests to me a serious flaw in this society. Too many people in this society think that the gap can't be bridged, perhaps?
But in other countries, the sense I get is that the gap between the generations was viewed as important and something that should be worked on to change, from a negative into a positive aspect of that society.
This is obvious to me when I think about a movie that debuted in Sweden in 1970 called EN KARLEKS HISTORIA and which is now known around the world as A SWEDISH LOVE STORY.
In my not-so-humble opinion, this is a movie that should be better known. A television channel should be putting the movie on their schedule every couple of years.
In a balanced manner, A SWEDISH LOVE STORY presents teenager and adult characters in and outside a city that Swedish movie goers knew to be the capitol, Stockholm. The script focuses on two families from Stockholm who are initially brought together on a beautiful, sunlit summer's day in a park.
There's 15-year old Par (pronounced 'pear' -- like the fruit I enjoy eating), from one family, and not-quite 14-year old Annika from another family who, by chance, have both come to the park for relaxed, family get-togethers. The park has a convenient food and drink concession stand and the two teenagers surreptiously check each other out while on line.
Par's family has come to show support for a grandfather who has been recuperating from an operation at a rest home that's located near the park. Annika's aunt, Eva, who looks to be around 25 years old, also has been at the same rest home and this day happens to be her birthday.
Later during the same day, Par's group of friends rendezvous on their mopeds and ride over to an address where they think Annika lives. What luck! Annika does live at that address. There's nothing about these scenes that makes the situation contrived, forced, or unbelievable: Par has described Annika to his mates and, probably, one of them, on his own, recognizes her and thinks he knows where her family lives. All of that sight and sound information takes place off screen, and the fact that there's nothing forced or contrived and unbelievable about this says a great deal about the movie's script and direction.
The script and the movie's direction were by the same person, Roy Andersson, who, many years later, wrote and directed SONGS FROM THE SECOND FLOOR.
The relationship that develops between Par and Annika becomes a major strand in the way that the plot plays out and eventually combines with a second major strand -- that of all of the other supporting adult characters.
Every relationship presented in this 119-minute movie -- whether it's parent and child, teenager and teenager, family member and family member, or employer and employee -- moves the plot along to a conclusion that most viewers will not guess in advance.
As a convenient label, A SWEDISH LOVE STORY can be remembered as a movie about relationships.
The adult characters come across as well-meaning and not particularly concerned about what is going on with their children, because they are satisfied by their society's parenting traditions that they became accustomed to, in their growing up. For their part, the teenager characters are just beginning to pay attention to what's happening in the society and in the rest of the world, so, while they don't agree with some of the decisions that their parents make, they don't feel that their personal freedom has been limited. Thus, the gap between the generations is small, compared with the generations in the U.S., for instance.
Late in A SWEDISH LOVE STORY, the movie shows Annika's father, John, as emotionally quite fragile and in need of therapy, when he arrives at a party thrown by Par's family at their summer vacation home that's right near a lake. At the time when the movie played in theaters in Sweden, no doubt much criticism was expressed about that character.
Significantly, Par and Annika do not witness John's behavior, whereas the viewer does.
A parent character, if questioned by a journalist or psychologist about the teenagers in their homeland, would probably say that the problems between the two generations were minimal, nothing to be concerned about, and could be dealt with in the family.
Every article that I have read about Roy Andersson's movie career states that EN KARLEKS HISTORIA (which translates into English as 'A LOVE STORY') did big business in Sweden.
As a movie viewed on a big movie theater screen, it's one that movie lovers will remember with great fondness, because of the relationships that viewers construct with the characters on screen.
This is another example of a movie that should be thoroughly researched.
If anything that I've said has interested you who are reading my words, track down a copy of the movie on DVD with English subtitles or watch it at You Tube, also with English subtitles.

Mondi's sustainable packaging with Scan Sverige
Sustainable packaging and paper specialist Mondi has collaborated with Scan Sverige to create a polypropylene (PP) based mono-material packaging designed for recycling.
HKScan Sweden, having over a century experience in responsible Swedish food production, uses Mondi’s WalletPack for its Pärsons brand’s range of sliced ham, salami, and plant-based products, starting from March 2024, Mondi said in a press release.
Mondi’s WalletPack is a PP based solution designed for recyclability. This packaging is purposefully developed with recycling in mind, aligning with our customer’s goals, and NPA's missions as an approved producer responsibility organization dedicated to advancing circular and traceable material recycling.
WalletPack can be effectively sorted by Site Zero, Europe’s largest and most advanced plastic recycling facility located in Sweden and is thereby contributing to a circular economy. It replaces the previous solution, which was an unrecyclable multi-material pack that consisted of PET-PE and PA-PE laminates.
Featuring a top and bottom film, Mondi’s WalletPack has an easy peel mechanism ensuring consumer convenience. Created with a protective high oxygen barrier for a longer shelf-life in combination with inside print, it also offers good printability to communicate the brand and product messages.
“It was a pleasure working with Scan Sverige, bringing over a century of experience in responsible Swedish food production to the table. The team closely oversees the full farm to fork value chain, which seamlessly aligns with our values. Throughout the trial process, we were both focusing on the same clear goals: to best protect the food while developing packaging that could deliver from a sustainability standpoint, being designed for recycling,” said Helene Brynell, regional sales Nordic, consumer flexibles, Mondi.
Einar Ahlstrom, material specialist at NPA explains, “Multi-layer laminates, such as PET/PE and PA/PE, are commonly used in diverse flexible plastic packaging, limiting the potential for material recycling. To enhance and facilitate more efficient material recycling, there is a need to shift towards using mono-material in plastic packaging. It is encouraging to note that Scan Sverige has introduced a novel packaging solution for Pärsons, in collaboration with Mondi. This alternative not only replaces traditional multi-layer laminates but also proves to be more conducive to material recycling.”
Scan Sverige and Mondi initiated discussions about the recently introduced mono-material packaging two years ago. With clearly defined goals set out from the start, the two organizations collaborated closely throughout the process to efficiently and thoroughly develop the WalletPack solution for Pärsons.
“The Mondi WalletPacks will be used on a wide range of sliced products for Pärsons’ cold cuts. We knew Mondi was the right partner to achieve our goals and are delighted to see the new solution running efficiently on our existing machinery. Our objective was to follow a forward-thinking approach to packaging sustainability as we are investing in getting 100% recyclable packaging by the end of 2025 and working hard to change to recyclable mono-materials,” said Eva Tiedman, category manager, Scan Sverige.
