Hello ! Could you tell me facts about the life of Cesare Borgia? Thaanks.

So, I really wanted to make this a short list with basic facts, but somehow it ended up becoming a longer, detailed list with my favorites facts alongside facts that aren’t very well known or mentioned, here it goes: - Cesare received an outstanding, carefully planned education. He was brought up at Rome by private tutors until the age of twelve, in 1489 he left Rome to attend La Sapienza of Perugia, where he studied the foundations of law and the humanities, being placed under the charge of the preceptor Giovanni Vera of Archilla, to whom btw, he remained warmly attached until Vera’s death in 1503. In 1491 he continued his studies in Civil and Canon law at the University of Pisa, attending the lectures of Filippo Decio, one of most rated lecturer on canon law of his day. There he also became more acquainted with the Medici family, through Lorenzo de’ Medici sons: Giovanni de’ Medici and his brother Piero. - Paolo Pompilio, a Spanish scholar, dedicated his treatise on verse-writing, the Syllabica, to Cesare, where he praised him as ‘Borgiae familiae spes et decus’ (the hope and ornament of the House of Borgia). - His father, as Cardinal and Vice-Chancellor, invested a long list of benefices upon him, to name only a few: when he was seven years old, pope Sixtus IV conferred upon him a prebend of the cathedral’s chapter of Valencia. In 1483 he received the title of rector of Gandia and archdeacon of Játiva. Later on, with pope Innocent VIII he was granted the position of treasurer of Mallorca’s cathedral, following that of canon of Lérida, Archdeacon of Tarragona and then treasurer of Cartagena’s cathedral. By 1491, Innocent at last granted him the bishopric of Pamplona. - He learned the art of bullfighting from the Spanish members of his father’s court and it became one of his life passions. Whether in Rome or in the Romagna, at any celebration, there was almost always a bullfight and he was almost always participating himself. - He also loved hunting, so he was always looking for good hunting dogs and falcons. On May 28th, 1497 he even sent one of his men, Enrico, to Germany to request from the Archbishop of Mainz some “well-trained and sagacious hunting dogs; their quality to be more important than their number.” - He was the first person in the history of the Church to resign the cardinalate, eventually becoming commander of the Papal armies. - He was briefly hostage of the Colonna during the conflicts of the French Invasion in 1494, and later on hostage of the king of France, Charles VIII. Although that time, he escaped their camp at Velletri, with the help of a man named Francesco del Sacco, officer of the Podestà of Velletri, who was waiting for him with a horse. Cesare sped back to Rome going to the house of one Antonio Flores, where he stayed for a night and informed his father of his presence. The next day, he withdrew to the city of Spoleto, and remained there until matters cooled off. - In 1497, a sword was forged for Cesare, known as “the queen of swords”, for his visit to Naples as papal legate, to crown the new king, Frederick of Naples. Its design was attributed to many artists including Michaelangelo, but it is more likely that the artist was Pinturicchio. And the blacksmith/sword engraver was Salomone da Sesso (c. 1465- c.1504–21) who after his conversion to Christianity assumed the name of Ercole dei Fedeli. (more details about the sword here x) - Cesare appeared wearing a horned mask in the guise of a unicorn during a theatrical performance, in one of the many festivities held in honor of his sister Lucrezia’s second wedding. Unicorn are known symbols of female chastity, possibly a reference to Lucrezia and her wedding night, but it also shows off Cesare’s own sense of humour, since it was well known to all present that he was anything but a chaste man lol. And the unicorn horn, according to a Greek physician had the ability of protecting people from sickness and neutralizing poison, which could have been another humourous remark from Cesare in reference to his family’s reputation of using poison to dispose of their enemies. - His best known mistress was Fiammetta Michaelis, she was a cultured courtesan from Florence, but who lived in Rome since 1473 most likely. Her relationship with Cesare was such that even after his death in 1507, she continued to sign herself as Fiammetta Ducis Valentini (of the duke Valentino). And her will in the city archives was headed ‘The Testament of La Fiammetta of Il Valentino.” - On May 10, 1499, he married Charlotte d’Albret, and before his departure from France he appointed her governor and administrator of all his lands and lorships in France and Dauphiny. He also made her heiress to all his moveable possessions in the event of his death (a little more about that here x). On December 1501, he personally selected precious gifts to be sent to her acquired from Venice. It included moulded wax, white sweetmeats, fine sugars, syrups, nine barrels of Malvoisie, oriental spices, oranges and lemons and all kinds of cloths. - Under his patronage, the first printing press of any importance was established in Italy. It was set up at Fano by Girolamo Sancino in 1501. One of the earliest works was the printing of the Statutes of Fano for the first time in January 1502. - About his administration staff, also in the year of 1501, we know he had a beautiful young woman from Bologna named Jovanna, working for him in his chancery. She’s described as a “degnissma scriptora”, she wrote letters and maybe did other secretarial duties as well for 14 ducats. - Whether it was treachery or a legit, reasonable move against Guidobaldo's own plans of treachery against him, the fact is that Cesare acquired Urbino without bloodshed in any of the towns, in a brilliant coup that amazed the whole of Italy (and terrified the nobility lol). While leaving a military contingent at Camerino, Cesare road north through the Apennines, between Nocera and Urbino he covered more or less sixty miles in forty-eight hours with a mixed force of 2.000 men. Before anyone else knew, he had already took Cagli, inside the Duchy of Urbino. Simultaneously, two other points were taken too, Montevecchio and San Lorenzo. Di Naldo, one of Cesare’s captains came from the east. These three armies converged towards the capital of Urbino then, where they met with the castilian and the garrison was rendered by him. A few hours later Cesare himself entered the city without any resistence. - The famous Sleeping Cupid by Michelangelo that Cesare gifted it to Isabella d’Este when he took Urbino in 1502 had a history together. He had previously been the owner of this piece. Cardinal Riario Sforza bought in 1496, but apparently when he found out that the piece was a modern piece and not an antique, he didn’t wanted it anymore, so it was displayed across the street of Cesare’s palace and he bought before the end of the year and later on send it as a gift to Guidobaldo da Montefeltro, Duke of Urbino. - A popular canzona of the time, Donna contra la mia Voglia by Filippo de Lurano (c.1470-c.1520) was Cesare’s favorite song. (There is an excellent version of it too by conductor and composer Jordi Savall). - As another step to secure the unity of the Romagna, Cesare did a reform in legal administration of great importance, he established a supreme Court of Appeal, named the Rota, influenced by the famous Court of the Vatican with the same name. He appointed as The First President, a newly created office, to Antonio di Monte Sansovino, a distinguished jurist with high integrity, and who was universally beloved. This Appeal Court sat in the seven main cities of the Romagna: Fano, Pesaro, Rimini, Cesena, Faenza, Forlì and Imola. If it was necessary, this Court would sit for as much as two months. All expenses were met by a payment from each of these judicial circuits of 200 ducats per annum. - In October 1500 Pinturicchio wrote to Cesare asking for the grant of a well to be put in one of the lands pope Alexander VI had bestow on him and his descendents at Chiusi, a city in the province of Siena, but near Perugia. Pinturicchio went himself to see Cesare at Diruta to request for all the necessary permission. Cesare issued a letter to Alfano Alfani, vice-treasurer of Perugia, making the request and saying that: “he had again taken to his service Bernardino Pinturicchio of Perosa, whom he always loved because his talent and gifts; and he desires that in all things he should be considered as ‘one of ours.” This initial request wasn’t honored so Cesare wrote again to this Alfani reinforcing his wish to be granted within that year. In 1501, Pinturicchio was given an annual payment as Cesare’s personal painter as well. - Cesare hired Leonardo da Vinci as a military architect and engineer in the spring of 1501, he entrusted him with all sorts of projects, in Cesena for example he asked that Da Vinci planned a new quarter of the city with wilder streets, sidewalks, parks, and a functioning sewage system and many other improvements. He also issued papers from the city’s headquarters for the construction in Cesena of a new university building, a palace to house the Rota. - Cesare also commissioned Da Vinci to work on an alterpiece, that is now lost unfortunately, at the Santuario della Beata Vergine del Piratello, outside of Imola. Some scholars agree that Da Vinci at the very least begun this painting, but it was not finished by him. There are some sketches he made that are called: Three views of a bearded man and it’s generally accepted to be Cesare, in what might have become a portrait of him in this alterpiece. - Right after he conquered a city, it was Cesare’s policy to issue a stem proclamation against plunder, guaranteed the property of the citizens. At Forlì he took measures to safeguard the convents, listening to all complaints of ill-treatment or robbery at the hands of the soldiery. On December 7, 1500, he hanged from the windows of his headquarters, two of his own men, a Piedmontese and a Gascon soldier, who had disobeyed his orders against plunder in the town. On the 13th of the same month, other offenders followed the same fate as the first two, which showed his zeal and the level of his commitment for the interests of his Forlivesi subjects. - At Cesena, as in other places in the Romagna, that same policy was applied, the usual disorder was put to an end, and civic automony was fully restored, along with the suppresion of aristocratic feuds, which resulted on econonical security and internal peace. - During the conquest of Faenza, the only city where Cesare met a true resistance, he retired to Cesena through the winter months while the siege kept going there. One night, he was walking around the city when he found a baby girl abandoned in the street, he commanded the baby to be nursed, and settled an ample dowry on the baby’s mother until she was of marriageable age. Afterwards, when the father refused to acknowledge the girl as his own, Cesare himself acknowledged the girl and she was baptized that day. - On March 29, 1501, when he was informed of Beatrice of Naples arrival at Cesenatico, twice Queen of Hungary and of Bohemia, and sister of Frederick of Naples, he send off his staff to greet her and to present her with a 'royal gift'. He ordered his lieutenants to honor her in every city in the Romagna and the Marche region, where she made her way back to Naples. - On 1502, Cesare and his father, Rodrigo went on a boat trip to Piombino and the island of Elba so that Rodrigo could officially take possession of these territories Cesare had recently conquered. Everything went smoothly, and they were on their way back when a violent storm began, hitting them hard. During 5 days they wandered aimlessly. Everyone, but Rodrigo, were quite anxious and scared. At the second day, the crew saw an English ship, and Cesare proposed to go to this boat to request for help, but Rodrigo refused, not wanting to request help from strangers. Eventually they made it back ashore, but it was a close call there for them for awhile. - After the masterstroke at Senigallia, where he successfully arrested his conspiring condottiere, the city was in total confusion, and a part of Cesare’s infantry were starting to sack the city, so Cesare in full armour and on horseback gave orders for his men to stop the sacking immediately, he then gathered some of his captains and went about the city streets putting a stop to the abuses that were starting to happen, some soldiers however, refused to obey his orders, and they were promptly executed there for their disobedience. - On 25 October, 1506 he managed to escape the Castle of La Mota, in Spain, a fortress that at that time worked as State prison, of maximum security, and where he was imprisoned. With the collaboration of his chaplain, and a servant of the governor's, named Garcia, along with the outside help from Count of Benavente, a powerful lord from the neighbourhood, who visited him regularly, he managed to climb down the 40 meter high tower with a rope, and if memory doesn't fail me, he was the only prisoner to have ever managed to escape this prison lool.

FOOTPRINTS OF THE ANUNNAKI?

The ever- changing knowledge of our past and our inherent inquisitive nature are continuing to shatter the boundaries we have so glibly set up around ourselves over many centuries of blind prejudices.

Most of this blog has been taken from parts of my book “FOOTPRINTS in STARDUST – SOULPRINTS in TIME”, where I outline some very interesting and soul-searching explanations, and give you their sources; so you can do your own research.

But, before we go any further, we need to open our minds to the unexpected, uncomfortable and unconventional sources. Do not paint the unknown with that worn out, cop-out phrase – “That’s the work of Satan”; that’s exactly what old Nick would like everyone to do. Remember that is what they said of Galileo and his work...

Have you ever considered the questions below? They are questions that the ‘experts’ would like us to ignore. The answers make us think, and give us a greater appreciation of life and our place in the cosmos.

1 - ARE WE REALLY GODS? as scriptures tell us?

St Augustine (354-430) held Plato in such high esteem, that he writes

in his Contra Academicos – “The message of Plato, the purest and most luminous of all philosophy, has at last scattered the darkness of error, and now shines forth mainly in Plotinus, a Platonist so like his master that one would think they lived together, or rather – since so long a period of time separate them – that Plato was born again in Plotinus.”

Like Elijah was born again as John the Baptist; dare we ask?

In The Descent of the Soul, Plotinus was most articulate when he expressed: “Thus the soul, though of divine origin, having proceeded from the regions on high, becomes merged in the dark receptacle of the body, and being naturally a post-diluvial 'god', it descends hither through a certain voluntary inclination…...”

Strange, he mentions the soul as being a “postdiluvial god”. Keep this in mind when reading about the Anunnaki ‘gods’, and their genetic carryings on in “The Lost Book of Enki” by Zecharia Sitchin.

I have said: You are gods

and all of you

the sons of the most High.

PSALMS 81:6

Jesus reminds us through John - 10: 34.

Jesus answered them:

“Is it not written in your law:

I said you are gods?”

If our souls, the real us, are parts of our heavenly Father, then indeed we are part of the same Creator of All – GOD HIMSELF! Just like the Anunnaki 'gods' were.

2 - ARE THE ANCIENTS STILL LIVING AMONG US?

The records of Edgar Cayce’s ‘readings’ held at the Association for Research and Enlightenment in Virginia Beach contain some fascinating stories, but none as fascinating as the accounts of ancient ‘gods’ living among us as ordinary people.

There have been many books written about this aspect of Cayce’s work. “The Egyptian Heritage”, by Mark Lehner, and A Million Years to the Promised Land, by Robert Krajenke are among my favorites.

If the belief in reincarnation is not your cup of tea, don’t let it come in the way. Just keep reading, and experience the weird, circumstantial (if that) evidence that dribbles through, and appears to defy explanation….

Around 11,000BC, Egypt experienced a large influx of Atlanteans, who were escaping the catastrophic demise of their continent – you can read about this in Edgar Cayce on Atlantis, by Edgar Evans Cayce. Egypt was one of the destinations of choice for the immigrants from this highly advanced civilization. Also from Atlantis, came Hermes; an accomplished scientist and mathematician. Possibly the same one the Greeks called a ‘god’. In Egypt he was known as Thoth, also a ‘god’.

Among the many people that Edgar Cayce gave ‘readings’ for – in the 1930’s – 40’s) were: Hermes (Thoth) and RA, along with other scientists and engineers from Atlantis, (including the fabled AJAX and ATLAS) who worked together to design, and build the Great Pyramid.

Edgar Cayce’s readings suggest that though these beings may have been called gods in ancient times, they actually possess souls like you and me, and like you and me, have to pay their karmic dues (Mat.5:18 - For amen I say unto you, till heaven and earth pass, one jot, or one tittle shall not pass of the law, till all be fulfilled.) before they can enter our Father’s mansions. Let’s keep in mind, that this was long before the arrival of Jesus, Original Sin was still being accounted for etc... etc. - and, Jesus’ Church had not yet been instituted.

We are all, even the "gods" of old, from the same Father; are ONE COSMIC FAMILY. And, my dear friends, THE "gods" may STILL WALK AMONG MEN!

Legújabb szokása, hogy gyűjti a szobanövényeket és próbálja őket életben is tartani, szeret „turistáskodni” Budapesten, bár kicsit más úton, de fafaragó művész nagyapjának a nyomdokaiba szeretne lépni, kedvence Székesfehérvár és az Anyukája által készített húsleves.

His newest habit is to collect houseplants and trying to keep them alive, he likes to ‘act’ as a tourist in Budapest, he would like to follow his tailleur grandfather’s footsteps in his own way, his favorites are Székesfehérvár and meat soup made by his mother.

Milyen típusú emlékek inspirálnak jobban: a jók vagy a rosszak?/What kind of memories inspire you the most: good or bad ones? A kreatív inspirációhoz mindkettőre szükség van – ha csak jó vagy rossz érzéseim lettek volna az elmúlt években, akkor sok ötletembe nem vágtam volna bele. Ha az életem pár fordulóponton máshogy alakul, valószínűleg most nem ugyanezt csinálnám.

Both is necessary for creative inspiration. If I only had either good or bad feelings in the past years, then I wouldn’t have started on many of my ideas. If my life would have been different regarding some of the crossroads, most probably I wouldn’t do what I’m doing now.

Ha újjászülethetnél egy ma élő vagy már halott művész személyében, kit választanál?/If you could reincarnate as a living or dead artist, who would you choose to be? Szívesen élném meg azt az időszakot, amikor még lehetett újat mutatni, igazán meglepni az embereket: amikor Kandinszkij őszintén hitt abban, hogy egy vizuális nyelvtan megalkotható és kutatta, hogy a formák társíthatóak-e színekhez. Lettem volna Moholy-Nagy, akivel közös fényképen szerepelt Gropius, Mies van der Rohe, Paul Klee, Josef Albers és Kandinszkij 92 évvel ezelőtt.

I would like to relive the times when it was possible to show new things to people, to surprise them: when Kandinsky honestly believed that the visual grammar can be created and he explored if shapes could be paired with colors. I would have been Moholy-Nagy who for sure was in the same photograph with Gropius, Mies van der Rohe, Paul Klee, Josef Albers, and Kandinsky 92 years ago.

Hogyan lendülsz túl az időszakos alkotói válságon?/How do you overcome a temporary artistic crisis? Nálam a fotó és a grafika egymásra hatással vannak, amikor egyikben úgy érzem nem tudok éppen újat mondani, akkor a másik felé fordulok – olyan szerencsére nem volt, hogy semmiben nem találtam motivációt. Mindenesetre keresem az új kihívásokat, ezért vállaltam például, hogy tanítok az őszi szemeszterben, hogy ne csak alkossak, beszéljek is minderről és meg is hallgassak másokat.

In my case photography and graphic design have a cross effect on each other, when I feel like I cannot show anything new through one of them, I turn to the other - fortunately, I have never been in the situation where I couldn’t find motivation in anything. However, I am looking for new challenges, and this is the reason why I decided to teach in the fall semester, so I not only create but to also talk about my work and to listen to others.

My girlfriend, Réka is an honest critic of mine and she is sensitive about my work. My self-criticism has developed a lot being with her, so, of course, I show my work to her at first.

Mit érzel, amikor egy másik művész a tiédhez hasonló munkát készít?/What do you feel when a fellow artist creates something similar to your work? Már nehéz igazán újat mutatni, én nem másolok mást tudatosan, ilyenkor próbálom magam függetleníteni a helyzettől és magammal foglalkozni, azzal, hogy amit csinálok, azzal elégedett legyek, és meg tudjam magyarázni, számomra mit jelent és miért kapcsolódik az eddigi munkáimhoz.

It is really difficult to come up with something new, I don’t copy anyone on purpose, I’m trying to not be dependent on situations and focus on myself, so that I am satisfied with the outcome of my work, and that I can explain to myself what it means and how it is related to my previous work.

Mit szeretnél, hogy miről emlékezzenek majd rád?/What would you like to be remembered by? Arról, hogy támogattam másokat is pont úgy, mint ahogyan engem is támogattak, a családom vagy a kreatív pályatársaim. Szeretném, ha ezen felül azt gondolnák, hogy amit csináltam abban fejlődtem.

That I was supporting others the same way I was supported by my family and creative associates.

Gyűjtesz valamit?/Are you collecting something? Viszonylag új, hogy szobanövényeket gyűjtök. Sokáig gondoltam azt, hogy képtelen vagyok őket életben tartani, aztán kiderült, hogy ez nem igaz. :)

It is pretty recent, but I collect houseplants. I thought for a very long time that I am incapable to keep them alive, then it turns out it’s not even true. :)

Kedvenc budapesti pillanat?/Favorite Budapest moment? Amikor nincsenek leadandó munkáim és nem szorít a mindennapos stressz, akkor elindulok a városba fotózni, ahol még nem jártam – ezek a pillanatok számomra a legkedvesebbek, 8 év budapesti lét után is még turistának érezni magamat.

When I don’t have work deadlines, and I am not pressured by everyday stress, I go to the city to photograph, to places I haven’t been before. These moments are the most precious to me, to feel like a tourist after living in Budapest for 8 years.

Van-e napi rutinod?/Do you have a daily routine? Felkelek, dolgozom, lefekszem :)

I get up, I work, I go to bed. :)

Kedvenc tárgyad?/Do you have a favorite object? Nagyapámtól örökölt karórám. Fafaragó művész volt, hozzá viszonyítom magam a kreatív világban, szeretnék a nyomdokaiba lépni egy kicsit más úton.

I inherited a watch from my grandfather. He was a tailleur, I compare myself to him in the creative world, I would like to follow his footsteps, just on a different path.

Hogyan fogsz neki egy új munkának?/How do you get started on a new project? Általában megszületik bennem egy ötlet, egy koncepció utána kiértékelem, hogy alkalmas-e egy egész sorozatnyi anyag befogadására, majd csinálok egy lehetséges helyszín és témagyűjtést, majd ha az egész összeáll, akkor nekifogok az alkotásnak.

Usually, I come up with an idea, a conception, then I evaluate if it is capable of receiving a whole series of material. Then search for possible places and themes and then the whole thing just becomes one and then I can start the process of creation.

Van egy jól körülhatárolható hangulat, amikor könnyebb számodra az alkotás?/Is there a particular mood that makes creating and working easier for you? A stressz mindenképpen káros a kreativitásra, így igyekeztem úgy átalakítani az életemet, hogy minél több tere legyen a “me time”-nak, amikor magammal tudok foglalkozni.

Stress is very contra productive regarding creativity, so I try to shape my life to have as much “me time” as possible.

Kutya vagy macska?/Dog or cat? Szeretek minden állatot, de tény, hogy a mai napig majdnem minden nap eszembe jut a nemrég elpusztult magyar vizslám, szóval kutyás.

I love every kind of animal, but the truth is that I think about my Hungarian Vizsla every day who passed recently, so dogs.

Mit szeretnél kifejezni az alkotásaidon keresztül?/What would you like to express through your artwork? Hogy érdemes az alkotáson keresztül inspirálódnunk a mindennapokban és fordítva. Hogy nyugodtan kísérletezzünk, próbáljuk a saját kreatív komfortzónánkat az alkotáson keresztül szélesíteni, próbáljunk ki akár egészen új megfogalmazásokat találni – akkor is, ha tartunk a közönség reakciójától.

That it is worth to be inspired through creating in the everyday life and vice versa. That we can experiment, widen the borders of our creative comfort zone through creation, try to find brand new definitions even if we don’t know how the audience will react.

Mi az, ami a leginkább feltölt?/What can recharge you the most? Többször volt olyan, hogy egy film vagy egy új zenei album olyan mélyen megszólított, hogy alkotásra késztetett – ugyanilyen módon hatnak rám új helyek, új emberekkel való megismerkedésem, a kollaboráció más alkotókkal.

It happened quite a few times that a movie or a music album reached out to me and inspired me to create. But new places, meeting new people and collaborating with other artists have the same effect on me.

Kedvenc város?/Favorite city? Székesfehérvár: itt születtem, itt él a családom és mindent megkaptam tőle, ami az induláshoz kellett. Mindig meglepett, hogy mennyire sok fiatal kreatív indul Fehérvárról, de sajnos kevesen maradnak a városban, ez legyen azért egy halk kritika a város felé.

Székesfehérvár: I was born here, my family lives here and I got everything from this city to be able to start off. I was always surprised by the fact how many young artists start off from Fehérvár, but unfortunately, not so many stays in the city, which should be taken as a silent criticism towards the city.

A két fő művészetelméleti alapkérdésként az absztrakció elhelyezhetősége a transzparencitás és medium esszencializmus fogalmi tengelyén – alkotóként is leginkább az foglalkoztat, hogy a fotó, valamint művészettörténeti manuális alkotói formák milyen tengelyen találkoznak és ez miképp tipologizálható, hogyan hat a befogadóra. I finished my master’s degree in visual communication at BME-GTK (BUDAPEST UNIVERSITY OF TECHNOLOGY AND ECONOMICS Leader in technical higher education). During my studies, I was dealing with contemporary Hungarian photography and the status of abstract art. In my thesis, I researched how is it worth to approach abstract photography contrary to traditional photography and other fields of art (from the aspect of the artist, the receiver, and the art institution system). Back at university my course mates and I founded the Tekhné art group that is part of the college of advanced studies by now, and this is where I first started to deal with photography seriously. Since then I had the honor to come back to the BME university in every fall semester as a guest lecturer.

Also since the fall of 2018, I became the represented artist of a contemporary photo gallery that is based in Shanghai and Beijing alongside internationally esteemed photo artists. My introduction exhibition will come out this month- this is a huge responsibility and opportunity for me, I will try to make it as soon as I can in person as well, since I grew up in China, an old dream of mine was just realized by this.

Besides photography I am the senior art director at MITTE Communications, I see corporate identity, visual campaign design as a complex planning process, I am forming and executing concepts ( rebranding of the Museum of Transportation, Radnóti Theatre, Robert Capa Contemporary Photography Museum, rebranding of Várfok Gallery, NNG, Reformation memorial year).

Resurgent Platformers and Metroidvanias

A Brief History & Experience

Looking back at the time when I played my first video game (8 Bit), I was bewildered and delighted at the same time because of the ability to control a video and the amusement it yielded. Since then, we have come a long way in terms of development that has happened in video game industry in those last 3-4 decades. Personally, I felt very fortunate to witness the evolution as it happened.

We started with 2D platformers such as Mario then eventually started savoring all games within those 8 Bit Cartridges. I never could complete Mario though but I loved other games which came with it. One of my favorites from those games was Contra. I liked it very much that I spent hours and hours trying to complete some tough levels. I got castigated by parents plenty of times for that but looking back at it, I feel it was worth it. Not to forget, most of us would definitely had played Prince of Persia, Apogee, Dangerous Dave, Aladdin and bunch of other decent action adventure 2D platformers.

Dominant Era of 3D Games

Fast forward 5-6 years, there were already a hundreds and thousands of 3D games. These games immediately become quite popular and took over the market. It was mainly because of the massive ability to have a real world movement in a virtual world which gave an immersive experience to the gamers. Soon after, we had the revolutionary 3D Open world game - Grand Theft Auto III for an example. The sandboxes or the open world games, till date is one of the most favorite genre, if not the best, among gamers. In my opinion, 3D games started to influence all other genre of games. I could go on writing much about how the 3D games evolved even more but I’ll do a detailed post about that someday! For now, lets move on to the next topic.

The Comebacks

In the current decade, it almost seems an impossible challenge to make 2D games which stand out and catch attention of the gamers. Yet, In 2015, Ori and the blind the forest - a 2D platformer, made a huge impact. The game not only managed to clinch top spot but also argued that it doesn’t need to be a 3D game to provide amusement and experience worth money and time.

Again in 2017, we have Hollow Knight. Undoubtedly, this game is a wonderful metroidvania packed with nail biting action and challenging platforming. In the same year, Cuphead got released. This is also a fun game where you have to beat bosses to progress and it’s definitely tougher when you are playing solo (Co-op is fun but still tough!).

One more remarkable game which was released in 2017 is Dead Cells. Altough you can pause and save the game at checkpoints, if your character dies at any point, the game starts from the first level. This kinda feels frustrating on reading but it actually isn’t while playing!

Celeste - one of the hardest platformers out there - launched in 2018. This game got publicity because of this factor. You have to be very precise at movements in this game.

My Experience of Platformers/Metroidvania games so far

I felt a bit bored after i played lots of Counter Strike, DoTA 2 and other open world games. All I was looking for a change and a challenge. A couple of friends at my workplace suggested me to check some platformers and a bunch of other 2D games. I tried Ori and the blind forest but soon enough I felt action factor was missing and also it felt a bit difficult for me to resume platformers.

One day, I tried Hollow Knight. Needless to say, this was even more harder in terms of movement and had lots of action. I had this habit of aborting games when I felt it was too much of challenge. But this time, I forced myself to stop this cycle. And it was beyond satisfactory. I nearly spent 150 hours on this game which include 3 complete walkthroughs (1st walkthrough with 112% completion, took nearly 100 hours). At some points while playing the game, I felt frustrated and annoyed by some of the boss fights or platforming challenges. But I kept going, and eventually it paid out - it taught me persistence.

After completing Hollow Knight, I went back to playing Ori and the blind forest. This time the game felt a hell lot of easier than it was at the first time I started it. I also went on to playing other 2D games which include - Mark of the Ninja (Remastered), Cuphead (Yet to complete) and One finger death punch (Stick figher).

Currently, I’m trying to complete Dead Cells. This game gets so difficult after 4-5 levels. Like Ori and Hollow Knight, it has amazing level design with a decent mix of soundtracks which make you wanna keep playing this game for hours.

Thus, to summarize, I can definitely say that such games are making a significant impact on gaming community and this is a just a beginning of their resurgence. It may not be long before we see 2D games like these clinching and maintaining top spot for years to come!

I watched some of the (terrible) cartoons as a kid, but never having owned any Sega consoles, the history of the franchise itself is lost on me. So when Sonic Mania Plus was touted as improving upon last year's Sonic Mania with the thrilling additions of "Mighty the Armadillo" and "Ray the Flying Squirrel," I was confused. Deep-cut character additions can be revelatory for hardcore fans; for someone who doesn't have the Sonic rings as their ringtone, though, I worried whether there would anything compelling about the update.

To my happy surprise, I found something very compelling indeed: a remix.

Dig a Little, Dream a Lot

Resolutions, goals, a fresh start. Does January bring out your best efforts in wishful thinking as you embark on a new year or do you have the stamina and mindfulness to actually fulfill your gardening dreams? The famous English gardener and writer, Vita Sackville-West, wrote: “The most noteworthy thing about gardeners is that they are always optimistic, always enterprising, and never satisfied. They always look forward to doing something better than they have ever done before.” Although Vita died in 1962, her gardens at Sissinghurst survive as a national treasure, thriving with seasonal beauty and tender care from volunteers. I was fortunate enough to travel the grounds last year and marvel, even in the rain, at the expanse of her horticultural involvement. Vita’s quote definitely describes my personal gardening mantra as my motto has always been “Failure is fertilizer. Throw the mistake on the compost pile to grow a new garden.” In other words, mistakes, or malfattis as we say in Italian are always an experiment in something new…and maybe even a better creation. I don’t rest on my bay laurels but keep on striving.

One of my favorite global excursions is to visit gardens everywhere I travel. Exploring gardens, great and small, is a wonderful way to expand one’s horticultural intelligence while gathering ideas for one’s own plot. At the top of my resolution list for 2017 I’ve designated garden hopping as a must-do. In the past few weeks, I’ve had numerous emails from readers of this column with questions, comments, and aspirations as well as ambitious dreams for gardening in 2017. Here are ideas you may wish to employ this year as you dig a little and dream a lot!

⎫ Get your children and grandchildren engaged in gardening activities. Virtues, skills, and life itself are learned in the garden. ⎫ Be brave. Experiment more. Worry less. There are no brown thumbs. ⎫ Plant more seeds to watch the wonder of sprouting. ⎫ Grow more vegetables and herbs in your pots or potager for a healthier plant to plate palate. Consume, share, preserve to eliminate waste. ⎫ Photograph your garden often and keep records of what blooms when, what works where, and what you want to edit. ⎫ Install a water-saving irrigation system. ⎫ Donate extra produce to a food bank. ⎫ When time is limited, hire help. ⎫ Compost, compost, compost. (see composting recipe below) ⎫ Visit botanical gardens wherever you travel. ⎫ Encourage pollinators to take up residence by planting and offering habitat that attract them. Birds, bees, bats, hummingbirds, and butterflies are precious protectors. ⎫ Eliminate insecticides and pesticides. Research companion planting. ⎫ Mulch more to reduce weeds, keep the soil warm or cool depending on the weather, and stop soil erosion. ⎫ Take a class to expand your knowledge. ⎫ Be more realistic. ⎫ Find interesting outdoor accents to use in the landscape like vintage windows, doors, or Victorian gazing balls. ⎫ Add one or more water elements. ⎫ Start saving special seeds. ⎫ Propagate from cuttings. ⎫ Plant a garden or pots in a patio for the first time. ⎫ Add a new rosebush. ⎫ Plant a cutting garden for creating beautiful bouquets year round. ⎫ Sow a path of fragrance with lavender, jasmine, honeysuckle, or other sweet-smelling shrubs. ⎫ Become more aware of the natural world by paying attention to the sounds, smells, and sights. ⎫ Make your garden drought tolerant with succulents. ⎫ Resolve to utilize organic gardening methods. ⎫ Begin keeping a journal of your outdoor endeavors. ⎫ Use tropical plants indoors as air purifiers as well as décor focal points. ⎫ Enjoy your garden more, slave less. Spend at least 15 minutes every day admiring your beautiful handiwork in conjunction with nature.

Cynthia Brian’s Garden Guidelines for January ⎫ Compost Recipe: Keep a bucket with a lid on it in the garage or other storage area to fill with your kitchen scraps, shredded newspaper, coffee grinds, tea bags, fish bones (no meat products), and egg shells. Dump daily in an outdoor bin or pile. Add leaves and other brown materials, grass and plant clippings, and garden waste. Keep moist. Turn often with a spade or pitchfork. When the material looks and feels like a damp chocolate cake mix with an aroma of the earth, spread in your beds. ⎫ With the flu and colds that seem to be ubiquitous, make sure to keep lots of citrus on hand, especially oranges and lemons which have a high concentration of vitamin C, citric acid, calcium, iron, fiber, and B complex vitamins. Squeeze lemon juice on salads, vegetables, meat, and, of course, in your water to keep you hydrated. Even cut flowers benefit from drops of lemon juice in the vase, helping the water to travel from the stems to the flowers. Scatter the peels on any acid loving plants in your garden including roses, azaleas, rhododendrons, and fuchsias as a natural fertilizer. ⎫ It’s time to do your heavy pruning on your roses. Cut out any dead wood. Prune roses to about knee height. Although many people assume that roses are fussy, they really are quite tolerant providing months of luscious blooms. ⎫ Buy and plant bare-root roses, berries, vines, and fruit trees now following the instructions on the packaging. ⎫ Spray an application of dormant spray on peaches and other fruit trees to kill overwintering insects. ⎫ Peruse catalogues for ideas for spring and summer flowers. ⎫ Make fragrant potpourri from cut flowers.

The festivities of holidays are almost over, winter has arrived, and our hills are once again the lush emerald that we, and the cattle adore. Congratulate yourself on a year well-spent growing your own food and tending to your plants. Now it is time to put your gardens to bed and give yourself a bit of respite. With the colder weather, we are fortunate that lemons, grapefruit, and tangelos are ripe to help us stay healthy.

There is still time to plant bulbs through the end of January for a late spring show. All bulbs need well-drained soil, full sun, or partial shade. Avoid planting in soggy soils where the bulbs will rot. Instead of lining bulbs up in a row, scatter them in clusters for a more natural look. Since deer, squirrels, raccoons, and rabbits enjoy eating many bulb flowers, experiment with planting narcissus cultivars, snowflakes, and snow drops (galanthus) as these repel the critters with their toxicity.

Speaking of critters, our readers enjoyed the article on keeping unwanted guests from taking refuge in homes. From the response, it is apparent that this season of green has indeed brought the rodents to our doorsteps in increasing numbers. Excellent advice came to me from Jenny Papka of Native Bird Connections. With her permission, I am printing her edited suggestions here: “What you term as "vermin" actually misleads people, since rodents, skunks, wasps and even mosquitoes are necessary in Nature. Yes they are annoying in many cases, but it is important to be respectful of why they can actually be good. Rodents are like chocolate for almost all young wild animals, and often are a life-long food source for many. The advice given about getting rid of ivy, etc is helpful, yet other animals will also be impacted. For example, Barn owls nest in palm trees, especially the dead frond areas just under the green crown. Barn owls are the BEST rodent controllers around and other than applauding their presence we do not have to do anything. Obviously we don't want rodents inside our houses or out buildings, yet annihilation is not ideal for anyone. The advice listed is excellent particularly about what we are responsible for doing around our houses.

In Contra Costa County, skunks are officially considered rabies vectors. This is NOT true in other counties. Obviously caution should always be utilized but seeing a skunk, even in the daytime, does not automatically indicate that it is sick. Skunks are omnivores and will eat many of the bothersome creatures we dislike, snails, slugs, rodents, fruit, and yellow jacket larvae. Skunks look for mates in early spring (Feb usually) otherwise they are solitary and crepuscular. So most of the year they are not obvious. This year is a "rebound year" as well, especially for rodents since last year was so dry. The rain this year promises more grass/food so rodents are producing large families. Information and education really increases tolerance and better, more humane choices. Thank you for a good article.”

Jenny also mentioned that it is illegal (and inhumane) to trap and relocate any wildlife. She also does not suggest acquiring cats as rodent control because cats are responsible for the deaths of millions of birds daily, another contentious subject.

Other ways to eliminate the rodents is to install barn owl boxes to encourage owls to your yard. Areas with heavy Great horned owl presence usually will not support barn owl populations (Great horned eat barn owls) but any owl is good for rodent control. Native Bird Connections has boxes available at Wild Birds Unlimited in Pleasant Hill for a $100 donation. Also of importance is to not use the sticky traps as they can entangle other animals creating suffering and a lingering death. Ninety percent of wildlife in the San Francisco Bay Area has rodenticides in their tissues including coyotes, bobcats, and foxes according to WildCare in Marin. This means that the use of poisons for all applications move through the food chain and should be avoided. Do not use plastic as it will maximize the freeze. ⎫ PRUNING for dormant fruit trees and shrubs begins this month. ⎫ TIDY your yard by cutting back your chrysanthemums to six inches above the ground, and removing dead foliage from plants. ⎫ SPRAY your peach trees with a concoction of fixed copper or lime sulfur after all the leaves have fallen from the tree to control peach leaf curl. Repeat this process in late January and February for best results. ⎫ PLANT bareroot stock such as grapes, berries, artichokes, roses, and several fruit trees. ⎫ PRUNE roses, vines, and berry bushes to encourage new growth. ⎫ CUT bouquets of geranium flowers for indoors and snip pieces to plant in other areas. ⎫ DONATE $100 to Native Bird Connections and receive an owl box for your garden. ⎫ REMOVE all ornaments, lights, and tinsel from your Christmas trees before placing on the curb for composting pick-up. ⎫ EXPRESS gratitude for all the green that nature is bestowing on us!
