Aiming for a "good-natured game"
<I wanted to express the pleasure of manipulating music and images in the game>
At the PS2 software presentation "PlayStation Party" held on June 27, Mr. Mizuguchi, who demonstrated while actually playing "Rez", said, "The pleasure of musicians and DJs may be like this. I thought." That feeling is exactly what Mr. Mizuguchi tried to express in this game. "I went to Switzerland and witnessed a music festival attended by 400,000 young people. When people gathered to listen to house or techno music, they danced crazy. I was amazed. They are also very particular about the lighting, and when they see it moving in sync with the music, what if I could become the player and be able to control the sound and light? I thought it might make you feel better."

Mr. Mizuguchi chose 3D shooting as the game system to experience this feeling. “I wanted something that could be played physiologically without thinking, with simple and clear rules, and something that everyone could play intuitively. I wonder if I was just thinking, "Is it too difficult?" "A long time ago, there was a 3D shooter called "Star Wars" in Atari's game. It was a simple screen composed only of wireframes, but I remember being so absorbed in it that I lost track of time. That kind of feeling. I also want to evoke the feeling of excitement.I think the excitement I felt 20 years ago is still valid today.”
At the start of the project, Mr. Mizuguchi said to the staff, "If there was a shooting game in which the music is composed when you successfully defeat the enemy, and the visual effects construct the world at the same time, it would be great. Don't you think it's good?" and the development of the game seems to have started.
“In conventional shooting games, all you have to do is think about how to make the enemies appear, but this game has a different trick that uses sound and light to create a pleasant feeling. It took an enormous amount of time to complete the program.”
<People who think they have no sense of rhythm should develop a sense of rhythm>
There have been many games in the past that use sound to create a pleasant feeling. But how are they different from the so-called rhythm games of the past?
I think that the traditional rhythm game was "forced". There is a certain point at which you have to play a note at the right time or you will make a mistake. Of course there is such a fun aspect, but in "Rez," there is no "compulsion," so you can play as you like, which is liberating. If you defeat the Enemy with your own timing, various sounds will come out and become music. I think there are quite a lot of people who shy away from playing sound games because they think they don't have a sense of rhythm." I think there are a lot of people who think they don't have a sense of rhythm and shy away from playing music games. However, this is a game that I want those people to try. First of all, I can tell them to try it without worrying about their sense of rhythm. Besides, the game is also fun to play as a shooting game. But when you get good at the game, you will realize that you have a good sense of rhythm. In fact, it was the same for me.

3D shooter?
Basically, it's a 3D STG where you shoot the enemies that appear with lasers. However, according to the timing of the shot, the music playing in the background is further overlapped with the sound, and bright lights fly around the screen. A major feature of this game is the effective use of music and images.

Pleasure created by simple operation
Hold down the missile launch button and move the cursor to lock on the enemy. Release the button to fire a laser that hits the enemy. The operation is very simple, so you can fully enjoy the STG-like pleasure of shooting.
Create your own "Rez"!
For example, if multiple enemies are destroyed individually, or if they are destroyed after being rocked together, the way sound and light are created will be different. How to shoot enemies and what kind of music and images to create. It's up to the player's preference.

Strengths:
Oral and Written Communication: I'm good at expressing my ideas clearly, both when speaking and writing. This helps me confidently pitch ideas and write strong business proposals.
Time Management: I excel at balancing multiple tasks and meeting deadlines. I use calendars and task management apps to stay organized and on track with my goals.
Computer Literacy: I have a good understanding of various software and online tools needed for running a business. I feel confident managing finances with accounting software and using social media for marketing.
Sales/Negotiation: I can connect well with people and understand their needs, which helps me close sales and negotiate deals that benefit both parties.
Weaknesses:
Financial Planning: While I know the basics of financial planning, creating detailed long-term financial strategies is challenging for me. To improve, I'm planning to take a financial management course and get advice from experienced mentors.
People Management: Managing a team effectively is something I need to work on. I sometimes struggle with delegating tasks and giving constructive feedback. To improve, I'm reading leadership books and attending workshops on team dynamics.

Okay so. Ruin Theory Revised Time!
I think I was mostly right before so there will be a lot of repeat information. What’s different is the MXES and the Black Rabbit. Long post ahead and I try to summarise some of it at the beginning for you. The rest is under a cut cause I’m not an asshole
So. The original Mimic made to entertain a small child and then turned into a killer through mimicking the actions of those around it is sealed in the basement. A group of teens fucking around find the Pizza Place and are killed by the Mimic by being lured around and killed. Upon realising what’s happened, the Mimic is sealed away again, under the foundations, and a new security system is put in place. This system is the MXES, with nodes across the Pizzaplex. This path down is reopened by the construction workers trying to see what’s pulling all the power from the Raceway. (The MXES could have been installed after this too, the order doesn’t particularly matter)
However, before the Plex was built and the Mimic was sealed away, there was a whole line of animatronics running the Mimic programming. It’s implied at least one of them saw what happened to those original kids that were killed and well. I guess mimicked it, and added it to all the other behaviour they’d learnt so far, and were deactivated. Presumably, before much more damage could be done. Why is this important? Well!
The original Mimic was sealed in the Pizza Place before the Plex was built and after the line of Mimic animatronics was discontinued. This means that when the Storyteller was installed into the Pizzaplex running the same Mimic software, we can assume that it’s a different Mimic to the one we see in the Pizza Place. This one has different behaviours to the one we know is sealed, but it’s still clearly from the same original Mimic, as it displays the same behaviours learned in the original when it was entertaining a small child. This Storyteller is connected to every single part of the Pizzaplex, but not the MXES. For you know... security reasons.
The Storyteller changes the animatronics behaviour, effecting each of them differently. Roxy becomes a bully, Freddy becomes a brat, Chica becomes desperate for attention and Monty becomes aggressive. We don’t know how this effects DJ or the daycare attendants but we can assume it at least effects the attendants as well. It’s removed from the Pizzaplex very shortly after it’s installation, presumably because it took the body of Tiger Rock to kill two people. (Noticeably leaving their limbs in tact which is something the Mimic in the basement is known to do.) The Storyteller is removed, but this second Mimic is still in the system. We know it’s part of the main network now, since the genius that installed it tried to disconnect it manually and it did nothing. This is why the animatronics are still acting weird during the daytime, but it’s not why they’re attacking Gregory in Security Breach. That’s still Vanny.
Vanny is the one behind the VANNI mask. She created it with Glitchtrap’s instruction in order to interfere with the MXES security system. She needs to get under the Plex and into the Pizza Place in order to build Glitchtrap the body he wants or simply to take him to whats left of the Afton body. She can’t get down there with the MXES system blocking the way down. The Helpi AI is tweaked and installed into the mask in order to cover her tracks. The Helpi support system is ingrained in every aspect of the network, having it be a part of the VANNI mask means she can go undetected for a lot longer than if security records are showing the words ‘VANNI’ over and over again. Vanny ends up not finding the Afton body, and instead, finds the powered down, original Mimic for Glitchtrap to take control of instead. So Vanny is trying to get underground, and kill kids and stuff as Glitchtrap commands, right? So why are the animatronics going haywire?
Because Glitchtrap is in the system now. He has control of them over the digital Mimic, and does so through the VANNI mask and the main network. When Freddy is rebooted into Safe Mode, he is no longer connected to the network and is running purely based on his own internal programming. Glitchtrap is able to command all but Freddy, except in that final sequence when they’re within range of each other, because he’s not on the system anymore. Glitchtrap can capture kids with the other animatronics, and have Vanny kill them as much as he likes, pretty much unopposed, while the Mimic running the systems watches and learns. When Vanessa is freed via Princess Quest and the original Mimic is beaten by Tangle (the Blob), Glitchtrap is still in the system and the VANNI mask.
With the Plex now in Ruins, several new teams are sent to the Pizzaplex in order to clear up. One of these teams finds the lift down and discovers the charred remains of an endo, along with all the others down there. The Mimic reboots without Glitchtrap’s influence and kills the team, leading to them resealing it deeper inside the Pizza Place, rebooting the MXES system, and adding more nodes. Roxy could have been added as a node at this point, or she could have been moved from the main network over to the MXES one to be a node after the Storyteller was removed. I don’t think the order here matters too much as the events of Security Breach only need her to be influenced by Glitchtrap, and it could explain why she’s still somewhat herself that night while the others are stuck in a loop of set actions and phrases. She would only have one level of corruption while the others would have the digital Mimic and Glitchtrap to deal with. Either way, once she’s moved to the MXES network, she is no longer under the digital Mimic’s control. This is why she’s herself in Ruin while the others aren’t. (Eclipse is his own post so don’t mind that for now)
Now, Vanessa isn’t just going to let Glitchtrap continue what he’s been doing. When the Plex is condemned due to the fact the Mimic keeps coming back, she goes back and modifies the main network. Vanessa has very little reason to believe the Mimic is a part of the system or is trapped under the Plex. (Unless there’s something I’m missing here but no one has pointed anything out so...) She’s unaware of the Mimic, though might know it existed due to the manuals still being in the Pizza Place. With this in mind, her only objective is to keep Glitchtrap contained. She reprograms elements of the main network (so another layer of programming on the digital Mimic) to keep Glitchtrap contained and to prevent it from leaving the servers. This leaves him still connected to the VANNI mask from parts of the main network.
Glitchtrap is the Black Rabbit trying to get Cassie throughout the game. It’s trying to use her as a new host, which is why it consistently reaches out for her and prevents her from taking off the mask. It’s why we see TV static when it’s close by and why its a danger. With all of the MXES shut down, and Cassie right by the servers it’s contained in, Glitchtrap makes another attempt to catch Cassie and return to the real world. This is why he’s only visible in the mask world too. He’s connected to it, and doesn’t have a physical body anymore. With this being said, Glitchtrap is not impersonating the Helpi AI. He is just trying to takeover Cassie.
The digital Mimic and the underground Mimic are connected now. Glitchtrap was connected to the VANNI mask while he was in control of the underground Mimic, and the connection remained after he left. It’s still recieving information from it. This means hat both Mimics are now connected to the same point. The underground Mimic is recieving information from the VANNI mask and responding with the Freddy walkie talkie and the digital Mimic is impersonating the Helpi AI. They’re stuck in a feedback loop where when one Mimic says or does something, that feeds into the other Mimic who repeats it back into the first Mimic and so on and so forth. This is why the Mimics sound the same, and why they respond to each other the way they do. They can hear eachother. The underground Mimic wants Cassie to free it so the digital Mimic wants the same thing. So why did the digital Mimic say it blocked the Black Rabbit?
Well because of Vanessa reprogramming the network to keep that guy contained. That’s still active within the digital Mimic. The underground Mimic didn’t do shit, but in claiming they helped, it helps convince Cassie that it’s been dealt with. This is also why the Helpi AI claims to have said it shouldn’t bother Cassie anymore (it said ‘wont’ so its wrong anyway), it’s repeating what the other Mimic said, combined with the new information it recieved in order to make it sound correct.
Now, I mentioned before that Glitchtrap may not still be connected to the main network. If that’s the case, then how is it summoning the animatronics? Well, if he is still connected to the network, then he’s using them to capture Cassie and transfer over to her. If he’s not, then this is where the digital Mimic is doing stuff. The Mimic was watching and learning from Glitchtrap this whole time and combining that with other information, both old and new, the Mimic is now summoning the animatronics to Glitchtrap’s location, in order to deal with Glitchtrap himself (a nice attempt so it might not understand the different dimensions here) or to simply kill Cassie. If it’s summoning the animatronics to deal with Glitchtrap, then they’re probably just latching onto the only entity nearby and assuming them as a threat, or perhaps, the Mimic has decided that the best way to stop Glitchtrap is to kill the potential host. We know the transfer of consciousness takes a minute or two, so there’s at least plenty of time for the animatronics to arrive and either capture or kill Cassie for him. I’m not sure which solution I prefer or which one fits the best, but those are the options for this part.
I believe that covers just about everything? I should really start doing this in chunks so it’s a little more focused. Anyway, if you made it this far and I didn’t cover something, feel free to let me know and I’ll make another post for it, or if you made it this far and have your own opinons you want to share you can feel free to do that too. This is definitely more satisfying to me than a second Mimic doing all of it.

I have a story to tell you. One of the VERY few college stories I have.
So, I took this math class, right? The teacher... Wasn't very good. He was much more interested in telling stories than actually teaching mathematical principles. I actually stopped attending his classes except for tests, and instead just sat in the cafeteria and studied the textbook on my own terms. I got a C. So, I passed.
Anyways. One of the classes, the teacher told a story. Of the Mars Climate Orbiter. My beloved.
NASA wanted to get some more info about Mars, so they teamed up with Lockheed Martin to build a probe designed to orbit Mars and gather information about the atmosphere and climate, and how it changes over time.
So NASA and Lockheed Martin spent the next several months communicating back and forth about this project.
There was actually some importance to this project, due to the loss of the Mars Observer probe. It was sent to Mars, and three days before it was scheduled to enter orbit the probe just vanished and stopped sending back signals. So, NASA kinda needed a win here.
Anyways. I don't know how long it took to construct the probe, but eventually it was completed and sent to Cape Canaveral for launch. As a side note of little importance to the story, NASA uses the SI unit of measurement (metric system) and so they design all of their equipment with that in mind. Lockheed Martin, on the other hand, uses United States Customary Units (which are NOT technically imperial units, though it's widely known as that) in all of their designs. So, someone had to specifically translate the measurements between the two systems for each of their correspondences.
Anyways. December 11th 1998. The price is launched. And nothing goes wrong. It actually goes quite well, and the probe is on its long journey to Mars. September 23rd, 1999. The probe arrives at Mars and begins the process of entering Mars orbit.
This process is automated, since a signal would take too long to transmit from Earth. So, EXTENSIVE math was done to ensure that the probe would do all the things at the correct time to enter orbit at the correct altitude. The general idea was to use the Mars atmosphere to help slow the probe down for each pass, so it was planned to arc into Mars's upper atmosphere. Here's a diagram of what I mean:

Anyways. The probe encounters Mars 49 seconds too early, and at a MUCH lower altitude than was planned. This may not seem like too much, but it is CATASTROPHIC in a mission like this. The probe then went behind Mars and the signal was lost. This happens, signals don't usually like going through planets.
The signal never came back. The Mars Climate Orbiter, much like the Mars Observer, was lost.
So, naturally, an investigation was launched.
Remember that anecdote about measurements that I said wasn't important? I lied. It's important.
Just about 2 weeks before the probe made it to Mars, the probe made a course correction. It was supposed to do that. The probe was just lining up to hit the atmosphere at an altitude of about 226 km, as planned.
Some more science jargon time! The Orbiter was planned to be at 226 km, but it had the potential ability to survive being as low as 80 km in atmosphere. The scientists keeping an eye on the probe noticed that the trajectory was seemingly going to be at about 150-170 km. Not good, but survivable. Right before the orbital insertion, it was estimated to be at 110 km. Starting to look bad, but maybe recoverable? Well, the investigation showed that the probe would have hit at 57 km of altitude. Which would have either destroyed the probe completely, or jettisoned it back out into space.
Why did this happen? Well, Lockheed Martin supplied a navigational software that calculated the thrust needed for the maneuvers. The LM system provided numbers in Pound-force seconds. The NASA supplied system designed to predict the location of the craft expected numbers to be in newton-seconds. Nobody performed the needed unit conversion between the two systems, so the course correction sent the probe to a completely different location than the probe thought it was at.
So. Basically, the world should just use a single unified unit system so this stuff doesn't happen.

India Impressions (2023)
I just returned from a week-long trip to India. Most of this trip was meeting entrepreneurs and investors centered around spending time with the team from Bolt in Bangalore (a USV portfolio company). This was my second time in India, following a family vacation in 2015. Here are some observations from my visit:
First, the mood in the country feels optimistic and assertive. People I spoke to, not just from the tech ecosystem, but also drivers, tour guides, waiters, students, and professors, all seemed excited and energized. There was a distinct sense of India emerging as a global powerhouse that has the potential to rival China. As it turns out quite a few government policies are aimed at protecting Indian industrial growth and separating it from China (including the recent ban on TikTok and other Chinese apps). Also, if you haven't seen it yet, I recommend watching the movie RRR. It is a "muscular" embodiment of the spirit that I encountered that based on my admittedly unscientific polling was much liked by younger people there (and hardly watched by older ones).
Second, air pollution in Delhi was as bad as I remembered it and in Mumbai way worse. Mumbai now appears to be on par with Delhi. For example, here is a picture taken from the Bandra-Worli Sea Link, which is en route from the airport, where you can barely see the high rise buildings of the city across the bay.

Third, there is an insane amount of construction everywhere. Not just new buildings going up but also new sewer lines, elevated highways, and rail systems. Most of these were yet to be completed but it is clear that the country is on a major infrastructure spree. Some of these projects are extremely ambitious, such as the new coastal road for Mumbai.
Fourth, traffic is even more dysfunctional than I remember it and distances are measured in time, not miles. Depending on the time of day, it can easily take one hour to get somewhere that would be ten minutes away without traffic. This is true for all the big cities I went to visit on this trip (Delhi, Mumbai and Bangalore). I don't really understand how people can plan for attending in person meetings but I suppose one gets used to it. I wound up taking one meeting simply in a car en route to the next one.
Fifth, in venture capital there are now many local funds, meaning funds that are not branded offshoots of US funds, such as Sequoia India. I spent time with the team from Prime Venture Partners (co-investors in Bolt) and Good Capital among others. It is great to see that in addition to software focused funds there are also ones focused on agtech/food (e.g. Omnivore) and deep tech (e.g. Navam Capital). Interestingly all the ones I talked to have only offshore LPs. There is not yet a broad India LP base other than a few family offices and regulations within India are apparently quite cumbersome, so the funds are domiciled in the US or in Mauritius.
Sixth, the "India Stack" is enabling a ton of innovation and deserves to be more widely known outside of India (US regulators should take note). In particular, the availability of a verified digital identity and of unified payments interfaces is incredibly helpful in the creation of new online and offline experiences, such as paying for a charge on the Bolt charging network. This infrastructure creates a much more level playing field and is very startup friendly. Add to this incredibly cheap data plans and you have the foundations for a massive digitally led transformation.
Seventh, India is finally recognizing the importance of the climate crisis both as a threat and as an opportunity. India is already experiencing extreme temperatures in some parts of the country on a regular basis (the opening of Kim Stanley Robinson's Ministry for the Future extrapolates what that might lead to). India is also dependent on sufficient rainfall during the Monsoon season and those patterns are changing also (this is part of the plot of Neal Stephenson's Termination Shock). As far as opportunity goes, India recently discovered a major lithium deposit, which means that a key natural resource for the EV transition exists locally (unlike oil which has to be imported). India has started to accelerate EV adoption by offering subsidies.
All in all this trip has made me bullish on India. Over the coming years I would not be surprised if we wind up with more investments from USV there, assuming we can find companies that are a fit with our investment theses. In the meantime, I will look for some public market opportunities for my personal portfolio.

My 'Temporary' Project Statement

Based on the project brief of "temporary" I centered my work around the idea of temporary moments in time.
At the beginning, the idea for my project was to explore the temporary phases in the life-cycle of a butterfly and how that is similar to the temporary and ever changing emotions due to past actions; the butterfly effect. I started by looking at my primary source, a dead butterfly. I realised that just using a butterfly to represent phases in a life-cycle and the butterfly effect was not sufficient enough and I couldn't create enough work from it. I was struggling to continue on with the project as my lack of primary sources blocked my ability to explore.
After brainstorming what I wanted the core of my project to be about, it then progressed to not only looking at the life-cycles of butterflies, but the concept of temporary moments in life similar to that of the short-term phases of a butterflies existence. This broadening of my idea allowed me to create a lot more work and explore many more concepts.
With this expansion of my concept, I started looking at more ways to develop my ideas. In photoshop I created a still piece which really cemented the idea of using memories to encapsulate the core of 'temporary moments in time'. From then on in much of my exploration, I included some form of memories. My primary source for these memories were pictures that were saved on a USB, taken on a camera I was given as a young child.
Within the midst of my exploration, I took a trip to paris where I used the metro often. The metro is a rapid transit system that is constant moving from destination to destination. I thought of also encorporating the metaphorical idea of movement into my project as time is always ticking away, and memories are constantly being made and gone similar to that of not only the life-cycle of a butterfly but life in general.
Through my exploration of these ideas, they were aided by attending workshops:
Filo Construction Workshop: As seen in my exhibition space, I created a garment like piece covered in collage of film negatives and photos of core memories of mine as a child. I feel as though each of our individual experiences and memories we make, form the people we are. This garment piece was formed by the idea of wearing reasons (my experiences and the memories that come from them) for why I am who I am. The filo construction workshop helped me learn of design in fashion and afterwards I sketched on photoshop my idea for this piece which I later made.
Introduction to premiere pro & adobe animate workshop: This workshop held by Paul Gardiner was not only helpful for my project, but also for future explorations and I have gained skills to work these softwares. We were shown how to edit videos and such which not only aided my idea of movement through time but I also created a stop motion charcoal animation afterwards which I was then able to edit on premiere pro and the result was a lot better than if I had not done this workshop. I also have attended Paul's other workshops such as the adobe photoshop one. Over all, through exploring my concepts, I gained many skills in different softwares in Paul's classes, which I can apply to future projects.
Cyanotype Workshop: I attended the Cyanotype and Blueprint workshop by Gemma Dardis and it was definitely by far my favourite workshop as it really cemented and set my ideas for the project into place. I really enjoyed the process of making the cyanotype print from start to finish. I used photo negatives that came from many of my developed film rolls as a base for my prints. As my project ties into captured memories and film photos/negatives, it was really cool to be able to print these on to acetate and then convert them onto the cyanotype. I continued using the skills I gained from this workshop later in my exploration. I worked on editing and collaging a series of images. They formed a sequence of prints which depicted chronologically core memories in my life and I then went onto making cyanotypes out of them. I also used the acetates in other ways like placing them under the light project in the photography studio which made for some interesting photos.
While I wasn't able to attend a print workshop this semester, I did experiment with lino printing myself which proved to be both rewarding and challenging. I hope to continue on learning more on print next semester.

Mary really helped me with curating my exhibition wall and gave me insight on how others may see my work. She told me that I shouldn't feel pressured to display everything I have created through my exploration just to show quantity but instead only display what I feel truly depicts what I want my project to portray.
