A Texas school teacher is reportedly “no longer employed” at the local district where she had been working after she prohibited her first-grade class from using the bathroom as punishment – causing several students to urinate on themselves.

According to a social media post from a school parent who later spoke to local news outlets, the teacher at Bartlett elementary sent a message to families on Wednesday explaining that her students had “lost their privilege to use the restroom during class because they lost their restroom badge while being in the hallway”.

“Unfortunately, we had some friends who really needed to use the restroom and ended up peeing on themselves,” said the teacher’s message, a photo of which was published on the post.

The teacher, who worked at Bartlett in the Houston-area Conroe independent school district, added: “I do want to apologize for that incident. I had [a] talk with the students about how important it is to use our thing appropriately, but please have a talk with them about that as well. For I know that if we both help them understand the rules, they will understand it better.”

The message offered apologies “for those who had an accident”, provided assurances that “they will have new badges tomorrow”, and invited parents to call the teacher if they had questions.

Soon, Bartlett’s principal, Charita Smith, sent a separate message to parents informing them that the teacher had been put on leave pending an investigation into her actions.

“I have spoken with the parents of … students who, upsettingly, had accidents,” Smith’s email said, as reported by the Houston Chronicle. “The class will have a current staff member to serve as the substitute teacher … while we complete our investigation into the matter.”

While Smith’s email suggested two students had urinated on themselves, a spokesperson for the Conroe district on Friday provided a statement to the Chronicle saying it had actually been about five. The children were also provided clean clothes after the accident, the district spokesperson’s statement said.

The spokesperson added that “the teacher is no longer employed” by the Conroe district following “a comprehensive investigation”.

“This incident is not a reflection of the thousands of exceptional educators teaching in classrooms across the district,” the spokesperson’s statement also said. “We are committed to supporting the students and families impacted by this upsetting event and are dedicated to fostering a culture of mutual respect and care among all students, families, and staff.”

Amber Johnson, the Bartlett parent who authored the social media post about the punishment that started the entire ordeal, told the Chronicle she believed “it is great” that the Conroe district acted.

But she said officials should ensure the former Bartlett teacher cannot work in education elsewhere “in the state or the United States”.

“I do want to push further to make sure she isn’t teaching any of our children,” Johnson remarked to the Chronicle. She said to Houston’s ABC affiliate: “These kids [were] traumatized and humiliated.”

While her ex-employers did not identify her, the Texas news outlet Lone Star Live as well as the Daily Mail named the teacher as Ashley Barrera.

Johnson’s social media post on Wednesday confirmed the teacher’s message was authored by a “Ms Barrera”. Furthermore, a Conroe school district webpage that previously listed Barrera as a first-grade teacher had since been deactivated.

Barrera did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

First grade in the US is the equivalent of the UK’s year two. Students are usually about seven years old.

They aimed to use him to move out of their lower middle class home and life, and that they did.

By the time he was 3, Harrington already had a resume in the double digits, and at 7 had been nominated for several supporting actor awards for a film, even winning one. Becoming one of the youngest performers ever to do so.

At 9 he was cast in a series, one that would run for several years and see him and his fellow younger cast members growing up on screen. During this time Harrington continued to book roles in movies and guest spots on other series so long as they didn't interfere with the shooting of the series per his contract.

Once he came into his teen years Harrington hit teen heart throb status. Being featured in publications aimed at pre-teens and teens, as well as constantly having content/posts made about them on online social media platforms.

During most of this, starting around the time he was 6, Harrington had become the breadwinner of the family. His parents using the money he earned to originally just pay the bills, but eventually moving on to pay for nearly everything. This included the new car his dad wanted, even though the one he had worked perfectly fine, and vacations that his parents took together without him.

They spent and spent while working their son to the bone, and often lying about when money was being set aside for him. Often saying more than they were and on some occasions not actually setting aside any at all.

At 17 Harrington finally filed to be emancipated from his parents. This resulting in a court case that, like much of his life already, had been heavily publicized and followed on social media.

Harrington quit acting a year later.

He spent the next couple of years laying low and out of the spotlight. Attending university (it was during this time he moved to the DFW/metroplex area) and working 'regular' jobs and for the first time in nearly all his life feeling like he could actually breathe.

It was also during this time that he started attending therapy. Focusing mainly on healing from his childhood, especially everything involving his parents, as well as his relationship with acting.

Over the past couple of years he's been rediscovering his passion and love for performing. Mainly sticking to theatre/stage and often local productions, but has recently started doing more professional work once again. Both on stage and on screen.

”200,000 Steps on the Lone Star Hiking Trail” by Sergio Chapa, from the May/June 2023 issue of Texas Observer magazine:

I grew up in northwest Austin at the edge of the Texas Hill Country, where hiking through the woods and playing in creeks were daily activities. So, I’ve always been an “outdoors person.” After moving to Houston for a journalism job, I quickly began running and biking along the city’s mostly concrete-lined bayous. Then an environmental activist told me something intriguing: Just an hour north of the traffic and skyscrapers of downtown Houston is the 96-mile Lone Star Hiking Trail, the longest footpath in Texas.

During April 2020, I began a quest to hike the full trail along with a friend in my “COVID bubble.” It was a sunny and unseasonably hot day as we embarked from mile marker zero inside the 163,000-acre Sam Houston National Forest. So early in the pandemic, we hiked without seeing another person, hearing a car on the road, or spotting an airplane in the sky. The only sounds were chirping birds, squirrels and lizards scurrying, and the wind blowing through the leaves.

It was a Coronavirus-safe activity and I was hooked. 

On maps, the national forest is depicted as a massive patch of public land. But on the ground, hundreds of U.S. Forest Service tracts are broken up by private timberlands, farms and ranches, and a growing number of rural homes and subdivisions. Mostly flat to rolling terrain, the forest is laced with creeks as well as the east and west forks of the San Jacinto River and the not-so-scenic lanes of Interstate 45.

Starting near Richards and ending near Cleveland, the Lone Star Hiking Trail proper is 96 miles through the forest with five optional loops adding another 32 miles. Depending on one’s height and weight, that’s roughly 200,000 steps. Given a pace of about three miles per hour, it would take roughly 32 hours to hike the entire trail nonstop. Hiking about eight hours per day means less than a week of hiking and camping. 

But that’s not the path I chose. 

It took me sixteen trips with various friends over two years to hike the entire trail. Confession: We weren’t disciplined about it; sometimes weeks or months lapsed between forays. Most often, I’d park my car at one of the 15 trailheads and we’d hike for five or six miles and then head back. On every visit, the trail provided valuable relief with its clean air, social distancing, and an escape from the four-wall confinement of lockdown and stress. Our slower approach allowed us to experience the forest in all four seasons.

Spring is marked by fresh light green leaves, wildflowers and white color pops of dogwood and magnolia blossoms. The summer can be brutally hot, but it’s the best time to enjoy Lake Conroe or Double Lake. The fall brings orange, red, and yellow hues as purple beautyberries and red yaupon holly berries ripen in the understory. Pine trees and oaks stay green during winter while colonies of colorful mushrooms and fungus sprout on the forest floor. 

I shared our hikes on Twitter and Instagram, and the Lone Star Hiking Trail became a hit with my social media followers too.

It’s much easier to hike the trail virtually. To do it in person, you need plenty of water, snacks, insect repellent, spare socks, powder, paper towels and wipes, and willingness to rough it, since there are no bathrooms or vending machines aside from spartan amenities at the Stubblefield and Double Lake campgrounds. Good walking shoes and long pants with high socks reduce risks of scratches, bug bites and ticks. Snakes on this trail mostly flee from people. However, mosquitoes and spiders are fearless. 

Early morning hikes meant the person in the lead breaks overnight cobwebs. Scat with fur signaled coyotes and bobcats, but the most worrisome signs were the wallows and rooting of feral pigs. My worst fear was encountering hogs, which can attack when frightened or startled. Luckily, we never saw any.

Sam Houston is one of the state’s four national forests created by Congress during the Great Depression. The timber industry previously clear-cut large swaths of the Piney Woods. State lawmakers bought hundreds of barren tracts in 1933, with the intent of adding them to the national forest system. President Franklin D. Roosevelt proclaimed Angelina, Davy Crockett, Sabine, and Sam Houston national forests in October 1936. Roosevelt’s Civilian Conservation Corps planted millions of trees. The U.S. Forest Service gave the Lone Star Chapter of the Sierra Club permission to build the trail in 1967. The trail and all its loops were complete by 1978. 

It’s big enough that you can easily get lost. I’m an experienced outdoorsman, but we’ve gotten lost on the Lone Star Hiking Trail, marked by small reflective markers nailed into the trunks of trees. It’s easy to lose track of the markers after leaving U.S. Forest Service land and walking down a rural road to the next section. Cell-phone service can be spotty, so it’s best to download Lone Star Hiking Trail Club maps in advance. 

But not all of this wilderness is protected. Legally distinct from national parks and refuges, national forests can be used for hunting, fishing, timber, grazing, mining, oil, and natural gas. By law, the U.S. Forest Service must manage Sam Houston with no single resource emphasized over others. To that point, the 163,000 acres also include trails for ATVs, mountain bikes, and horses. Lakes are stocked with bluegill, largemouth bass, and catfish. Oil wells and easements for pipelines and power lines are common.

Historically, wildfires kept the forest from getting too dense and unhealthy. Today, the U.S. Forest Service uses controlled burns and sustainable timber harvesting in efforts to control a pest known as the southern pine beetle and improve habitat for the red-cockaded woodpecker, an endangered species that favors open “pine savannas” and nests from April to June. Over the decades, environmentalists and forest managers have sparred in court over forestry practices related to the beetle and woodpecker.

I looked for those woodpeckers, but only heard their distinctive high-pitched chirps and tap tap-tapping hidden in the canopy. 

Sprawl and suburbanization are the biggest threat to the forest and to this trail. I-45, the busy thoroughfare connecting Houston and Dallas, divides it in two, creating a formidable barrier for wildlife and people. The Texas Department of Transportation spent millions improving a 15-mile stretch of highway between Huntsville and New Waverly but spent little on allowing hikers or wildlife to cross safely under the roadway where cars speed past a white 67-foot statue of Texas founding father Sam Houston.

I wish the Texas legislature would use some of its $32.7 billion budget surplus to create a buffer for this trail��and improve the crossings that either don’t exist or have been damaged and make a through-hike so challenging. Unfortunately, this year has seen news in the opposite direction: The state recently lost a lovely park further north on the I-45 corridor that offered its own woodland paths.

In theory, animals can use the narrow corridor where Big Chinquapin Creek goes under the highway, but hikers must trudge four miles along three rural roadways and the I-45 frontage road in order to reach the next trail section. 

Country-club communities such as Elkins Lake and the Texas Grand Ranch subdivision with its two- to five-acre lots allow people to live at the edge of the forest. As an unintended result, nonnative ornamental plants are escaping into the wild and becoming invasive species. The average person may not notice, but I kept spotting exotic plants like nandina, wax-leaf ligustrum, Chinese tallow, chinaberry, bamboo, and hardy orange all along the trail. 

Volunteers with the Lone Star Hiking Club and the Houston area Sierra Club maintain the trail and try to clear out invaders. I’d love to give back and join them one day.

But it’s a big job—and progress is often slow.

A vehicle bridge to the Stubblefield Campground washed out during Hurricane Harvey in August 2017 but was not rebuilt until 2022. A footbridge over scenic and shaded bluffs of the east fork of the San Jacinto River in the Magnolia section of the trail was destroyed more than eight years ago and never replaced. 

Hikers are forced to take a complex detour, though I opted to park my car at the next trailhead and walk to the opposite bank. 

Even as the pandemic fades, I’m still going back for more, particularly to hike the loops outside the main trail. To me, this escape seems even more valuable with Houston growing at a pace that will see it overtake Chicago as the third-largest U.S. city. Even as the metropolitan area expands in all directions, the forest still offers respite.

A high-school teacher in Spring, Texas has resigned after allegedly telling his students they would get a passing grade for buying his book and reviewing it online.

On Friday, TikTok user tizzyent shared a picture of a board from inside a classroom at York Junior High School, where teacher Brandon Downing was offering the students a 100 grade for downloading two free books, flipping through to the end on Kindle, and giving both tomes 5-star reviews.

In a letter seen by Newsweek that was sent to parents at York Junior High on Tuesday, Principal Melanie Bujnoch said: "I want to let you know that the York teacher referenced in the TikTok video and on other social media platforms has resigned, and his classes will be covered by a substitute for the remainder of the school year. We are working with the parents of those students directly involved to address any questions."

According to the Conroe Independent School District (CISD) Board of Trustees meeting agenda from April 20, 2021, Downing was one of hundreds of teachers approved by the board for a one-year contract.

In the video, which has received more than 680,000 views, TikToker tizzyent explains that the students had the option to either complete a 26-page assignment or buy the book and leave a review for their teacher.

The video caused outrage online, featuring on-screen instructions from the teacher that told students: "Do not say 'he's my teacher' or 'I'm in his class' or anything like that."

Viewers of the video were outraged by the teacher's behavior and flooded the comments with their thoughts. One commenter wrote: "A 26-page report is insane. He's basically forcing them to buy the grade."

Another TikTok user wrote: "That's a straight-up abuse of power and very unprofessional," and one commenter said: "He ought to be fired."

"Wow, what happened to being ethical?" asked another viewer.

The viral video found its way through the entire Conroe community, prompting students from the school to comment, including one who said: "I had him as a teacher and y'all are making a way bigger deal out of this than it is. He was a great teacher and nice to everyone."

Meanwhile, other commenters pointed out the similarity to many college experiences: "You basically have to do this for college," wrote one TikTok user: "In order to take the class, you must buy the book the Professor wrote that's hundreds of dollars..."

Since the incident, one of Downing's books Mammoth: Protecting the Herd has received a barrage of 1-star reviews on Amazon, with comments including: "Unfortunately I won't be getting a grade for my review since I'm not one of Mr. Downing's students," and: "A teacher that's making his kids buy his book and give it 5 stars so they can get a 100% in an assignment or write a 26 page with art project form a book? This is just sad and abusive."

UPDATE 5:19 AM - Conroe

- City officials say McDade Estates is under a mandatory evacuation, but are recommending residents in River Plantation, Woodhaven Forest, Artesian, Riverbrook Drive and Sherbrook Circle, neighborhoods off of FM 2854, and the neighborhoods downstream from McDade Estates.

UPDATE 3:01 AM MONDAY - Conroe

- Record levels of water being released from Lake Conroe Dam. The city will be evacuating McDade Estates, while other neighborhoods will be evacuated by the county.

MISSOURI CITY

- Fort Bend County officials said Missouri City residents under mandatory evacuations should leave at daylight.

- Catastrophic flooding of up to 10 feet of water is expected in downtown Bay City on Monday. A mandatory evacuation has been called for 1 p.m. tomorrow for the entire city and surrounding areas.

- The Fort Bend County Judge's Office says a

mandatory evacuation has been issued for Sugar Land residents

in First Colony Levee Improvement District #1 and those living within the Fort Bend County Levee Improvement District #7.

- Rosenberg police posted mandatory evacuation for homes on Huntington Rd. Unknown if bridge into area will hold as river levels rise. Bridge is only way out.

- A mandatory evacuation has been ordered for Simonton, Texas effective 10:00 A.M. August 27, .2017 for Sections 1, 2 and 3 of Valley Lodge Subdivision due to the conditions of the Brazos River

UPDATE 1:50 PM SUNDAY - Fort Bend County

- Fort Bend County Judge Robert Hebert has upgraded the voluntary evacuation order for certain residents in low-lying areas surrounding the Brazos River to a mandatory evacuation order. If you are a resident in the evacuation zones and you do not have transportation or a place to go - PLEASE CALL 211 and request assistance with the evacuation.

Brazoria County

- County Judge Matt Sebesta has issued a MANDATORY EVACUATION for all residents living WEST of State Highway 288 and SOUTH of State Highway 6. Refer to attached map.

An evacuation route has been established for State Highway 35 Westbound to Matagorda County to Northbound State Highway 71 reaching Interstate 10. Refer to map. THERE ARE NO OTHER EVACUATION ROUTES OUT OF BRAZORIA COUNTY. State Highway 35 WILL NOT be open indefinitely and will be unpassable with additional rains and river flooding. LEAVE NOW! Calhoun County

- Mandatory evacuation order issued

Freeport

- City officials have ordered a mandatory evacuation for all low-lying coastal areas, including Bridge Harbor. All other residents are also encouraged to evacuate.

Matagorda County

- Everyone south of FM521 is included in the mandatory evacuation order, including the communities of Palacios, Collegeport, Matagorda, Sargent and Wadsworth.

Rosenberg

- Due to the potential serious threat of flooding and record high levels of the Brazos River, the City of Rosenberg has issued areas of mandatory evacuation for residents and visitors in parts of Rosenberg:

West Street and Mulcahy Street: North of Avenue D

River Road area: All properties North of River Road, adjacent to the river

North of Brazos: all properties North of the Brazos River, within City limits

North Rosenberg: All properties East of 4th Street, North of Avenue B; all properties on 1st Street North of Avenue D

VOLUNTARY EVACUATION:

Galveston County

- Judge Mark Henry has issued a voluntary evacuation for residents in all unincorporated low-lying areas of the county. This includes San Leon, Bacliff, Old Bayou Vista, and Highland Bayou. The latest areas are in addition to the order already in effect for the Bolivar Peninsula, including the unincorporated areas of Port Bolivar, Crystal Beach, High Island and Gilchrist. Residents who rely on medical assistance or those who cannot go without power for an extended period of time are encouraged to leave.

Brazoria County

- Voluntary evacuation order issued for low-lying coastal areas inland of Intracoastal Waterway. There is also a voluntary evacuation for residents living along the San Bernard River, but mandatory evacuations may be necessary, according to the office of Brazoria County Judge Matt Sebesta.

Chambers County

- A voluntary evacuation order has been issued for Smith Point, Cedar Point, all RV parks, those living in unanchored mobile homes and other low-lying areas known to flood.

Dickinson

- City officials have issued a voluntary evacuation order for citizens with medical conditions and special needs as well as those in low-lying areas.

Freeport

- In addition to a mandatory evacuation for low-lying areas, city officials are urging all residents to self-evacuate.

Galveston's West End

- Voluntary Evacuation called for those with medical or access and functional needs on the West End of Galveston. Anyone who needs assistance leaving the island, please call 409-797-3701 or sign up online on the website

Kemah

- Residents who rely on medical assistance or those who cannot go without power for an extended period of time are encouraged to leave.

La Porte

- As of 9:30a.m. Friday, the City has issued a Voluntary Evacuation order for the entire city prior to the arrival of Hurricane Harvey. The area remains under a Tropical Storm Warning and Storm Surge Watch, and expects to receive significant rainfall totals from this storm.

Seabrook

- Voluntary evacuation issued with the elderly and those with medical conditions in mind. Residents encouraged to leave by noon on Friday, Aug. 25.

Sugar Land

- All other Sugar Land and ETJ residents within levee districts outside those covered by the mandatory evacuation are under a voluntary evacuation at this time.

NOTE: Jersey Village has not issued a voluntary evacuation order, despite social media posts indicating otherwise.

Jessica Biel and Justin Timberlake welcome second child after top secret pregnancy

Jessica Biel and Justin Timberlake have become parents for the second time, DailyMail.com can exclusively reveal.

The 38-year-old actress gave birth to a baby boy earlier this week and is currently holed up with the newborn, her singer husband Timberlake, 39, and eldest son Silas, five.

DailyMail.com understands Biel’s mother Kimberly Conroe Biel, 65, has also spent much of the past week with her daughter and newest grandchild.

At Kimberley’s Salida, Colorado, home on Saturday, a friend revealed she plans to stay with Biel and Timberlake until Sunday and confirmed the sex of the new baby.

Representatives for both Timberlake and Biel have been contacted for comment.

Timberlake and Biel have not been pictured publicly since March and are thought to have been staying at their home in Big Sky, Montana, since March 25.

An Instagram photo posted that day by Timberlake shows Biel from a distance standing in a snowy valley surrounded by mountains.

With the exception of that post, no photos showing Biel from the waist down have been released since her birthday in March, when she would have been around four months pregnant.

Those pictures, which appear to have been taken at the couple’s Los Angeles home, show Biel in her pajamas and shrouded in a loose robe while blowing out candles on a cake held by Timberlake.

 The actress has not shared any full-body photos to social media since her birthday party back in March

The couple – who have been dating since 2007 – are pictured out in New York with son Silas in February. Biel would have been around three months pregnant at the time 

Instead, the pair have focused their social media output on highlighting causes close to their hearts such as Black Lives Matter and justice for Breonna Taylor, while limiting images of themselves to throwback shots taken over the past year.

On July 4, Biel posted a video on Instagram from 2019 showing herself and Timberlake learning how to throw axes at targets.

She also posted a throwback snap of eldest son Silas – on his fifth birthday on April 8 – showing him slung over her shoulder and exhorting followers to donate to Save the Children and Feeding America.

Biel’s lookalike mother Kimberley has also featured in several of her posts, including one put online to mark International Women’s Day on March 8.

The birth of the couple’s new son comes just eight months after Timberlake was caught canoodling with his co-star Alisha Wainwright, 31, during a night out in New Orleans, Louisiana.

Onlookers told the Sun Timberlake, who was not wearing his wedding ring, appeared to have been drinking heavily but said he and Wainwright ‘were smiling and laughing’. 

Two weeks later, Timberlake apologized to Biel for the indiscretion with a public mea culpa posted on Instagram in which he admitted to drinking too much on the night in question.

In it, he said: ‘I stay away from gossip as much as I can, but for my family, I feel it is important to address recent rumors that are hurting the people I love.

‘A few weeks ago, I displayed a strong lapse in judgement – but let me be clear – nothing happened between me and my co-star.

‘I drank way too much that night and I regret my behavior. I should have known better. This is not the example I want to set for my son.

‘I want to apologize to my amazing wife and family for putting them through such an embarrassing situation, and I am focused on being the best husband and father I can be.

‘This was not that. I am incredibly proud to be working on Palmer. Looking forward to continuing to make the movie and excited for people to see it.’

Neither Biel nor Wainwright have ever publicly addressed the incident, with Biel instead continuing to focus on her acting work.

She does appear to have forgiven Timberlake, however, and has used her social media to declare her love for him and their older son Silas.

On Valentine’s Day, she posted a photo of the pair, with the caption: ‘My valentines [heart emoji]. Love you guys to the [moon emoji].’

On May 10, she posted another family snap which appears to have been taken in Montana, and which read: ‘These two people make being a momma the greatest job in the whole world! The moments spent with you are truly the most precious and funniest and glorious times of my life.

‘I love you both so much.’
