Crow
Request: Could you do one for Wednesday Addams x a mischievous shapeshifter/Loki-esque male reader?
A/N: I wrote this reader to be a sort of prankster. I honestly wouldn’t mind writing more for this version of reader if a lot of you want me to. I had fun with this! Thank you for requesting <3
Tumblr media
A bird was  perched in the rafters listening to her type in her type writer. It  had been up there for a while, just listening.
 Boredom struck the crow, causing it to float down to her, landing on her desk, looking at her. Black eyes scanning.
Her eyes never left the typewriter, “You know it’s not polite to lurk.”
The bird cawed at her, before slowly shifting, black smoke covering parts of the creature as arms grew from its wings, feathers shrinking up into skin. It grew in size, parts of it twisting and snapping, returning to a human size and shape. With a caw like laugh, it spoke. You spoke.
“C’mon Wednesday! Let’s do something.” You swung your legs as you sat on the desk.
“Such as?”
You gleamed at the fact she even was thinking about it. It took a lot to get the love of your life to do anything non-melancholic. “I was thinking we go on a nice walk and I heard that they are having a party down by the lake?”
“Enid told me.”
You decided to add something for Wednesday, “With parties, comes bonfires, with bonfires, scary stories.”
“I believe I am following.” She said, a glimmer in her eye.
You grabbed her hand pulled her up from her chair, spun her around. “Let’s go, come on.”
She barely smiled at your affectionate action, moving to her jacket. You straightened your varsity jacket from your old school and re-tied your shoes.
You had gotten expelled because of your prank. You played basketball and the opposing teams mascot was a leopard. You decided that it would be funny to shape shift and it was:
Until someone called animal control and you got shot with a tranquilizer dart.
You and Wednesday carefully walked to her balcony, you looked to Wednesday, “Do you want help getting down?”
“I will take the drain pipe.” She said, throwing her leg over the ledge. You watched her carefully as she slid down. You, wanting to show off, flung out your arms, the same black smoke covering you. This time, as long, black shimmering snake, you entered the drain pipe, slinking through and coming out the at the end. You stopped at Wednesdays feet, looking up to her.
“I love the look but I prefer when you can talk to me. Even if you make no sense.”
With a somehow loving hiss, you shifted back into your form Wednesday knew and loved. It had taken you two years, a lot of near death experiences and patience for you both to be like this with each other.
You had started out hating each other. She stepped on your tail while your were in dog form and you hated her from that moment til you were forced to interact because of educations worst attributes: Group work.
Slowly, you forgave her and became some resemblance of friends, to true friends, to confidant, eventually ending as lovers.
You fell first. How could you not? Her sarcasm, her misdirection and her bluntness is what you need. You had realized this when you ended up biting a supposed-to-be-dead pilgrim’s arm.
Wednesday fell in love the next year, you were sitting, as a crow, in a tree. You were watching over Eugene, whom you both considered a younger brother like figure. Wednesday fell in love with the your passion, your resilience, your slight arrogance.
Many were amazed when they saw you, arm draped over Wednesday’s shoulder, walking and laughing with her and her looking happy about it. You both made sure to take care and understand each other.
Wednesday didn’t like extravagant displays of affection and you had a need for physical touch. So you two went with the shoulder position and hand holding. Her hands fit perfectly in yours and she was surprised when she noticed this.
She remembered that her father told her people are made to interact, physical or not. She loved holding your hand but she also loved watching you from afar.
You loved pulling her into hugs and you loved listening to her do anything. Typing, walking, talking and her heartbeat.
You could find each other in a dark room if you were asked. That’s how you described it to other people.
With in a few minutes, you both could hear the laughter of your school mates and light. You both stopped, Wednesday looked at you.
“Story of the Evergreen Woodsman?”
You smiled, you teeth glowing in the faint firelight that shined through the tree.
“It will be the performance of the century!” You said, slowly backing away further from the party. You began shifting.
Wednesday walked through the trees, surprising everyone.
“Oh my god, you came!” Enid said from her place beside Ajax. She motioned the girl over. Wednesday sat beside her.
“Did I miss anything?”
“Nah,” Ajax said, “We are just kinda chilling. Make a s’more.”
Wednesday grabbed the stick and bag of marshmallows the Gorgon handed her. She began toasting one when Xavier stood up.
“Alright alright, we all know the tradition, stories. Know who wants to tell one.”
There was a pause before Wednesday handed her the flaming marshmallow to Enid.
Xavier looked at her, “Try not to scare us to bad.” He laughed as he went to go sit back down.
Wednesday took his spot, facing the party goers.
“In these woods, a long time ago, there was a logging camp, before Nevermore was there and before the Gates family bought it.”
The winds slowly blew, making the reflection of the moon in the water shiver and shake.
“One man, Todd Gragg, was a dedicated lumberjack. He would show up early and stay late. He worked hard and helped everyone and he was well liked, except his co-worker, Jason Luke. Jason hated Todd and was plotting how to get a leg up on Todd.”
You snapped a couple limb, catch the attention of only a few.
“Jason finally saw a way: Todd always sharpened his axe after his shift. No one was around. The plan was to damage the axe after Todd was done with it.”
You slowly moved forward getting to where you could move quickly.
“Todd sharpened the blade, once satisfied, he slammed it down into the stump. He stood up and began walking away, Jason quickly walked to the axe and tried to pull it from the stump. It wasn’t coming loose. He tugged hard, pulling with all he could.”
You stomped loudly, making everyone look around.
“It came out of the stump.”
Another stomp.
“It flung from Jason’s hands..”
You ran out of the tree line, screaming “Right into my head!”
Screams ensued, a few stood to run, only realizing your laughter. You were doubled over, laughing your heart out as you return to your normal size.
“You shoulda seen the looks on your all faces.”
“C’mon you two!” Enid said, still shaky from the scare.
You grinned a Cheshire grin as you walked to Wednesday, throwing your arm around her shoulder, “We got them real good, cailín álainn.”

Into the Honest Desert (The Gap Years Part 18)
June 30th 2019
Las Vegas, NV
The road trip resumes. How does one write distinctive dialogue? How does one write (risky, involving an elf) romance? I can do neither and I must do both.
……………
Brian has realized that this is the island of the lotus eaters, and he really hopes that doesn’t make him Odysseus. He and his friends have spent the past nine days on the Las Vegas Strip, a few manicured miles of electric lighting that promises safety with its high population density. They left once, rediscovered the mythical horror of plague, and then turned right back around. They need vaccines, they need allies, and they need a goddamn plan. Would Brian rather risk death than stay here and wait in luxury for the end of the world? Once he rode his bike off of a woodland trail and tumbled halfway down a mountain before stumbling back out with a mad grin. He’s been hurt in fights more times than he can count, and only learned to stop once he was on a school wrestling team and seeing blood meant pausing the match. Once he swung a crowbar at an enemy soldier so hard that its ribcage shattered and it bled out into the pavement. He’s more of an Achilles than an Odysseus. He’s not desperate to make it home.
They’re in different rooms now than when they first arrived, for the sake of secrecy. The humans have a suite of their own again, but most nights one of those beds is empty. Brian is political-dynasty-rich and a varsity star. He knows that everyone up to and including the media think he’s some manipulative jerk for sleeping around. Zerada… Zerada is a very different sort of situation. The noblewoman might as well be Circe, minus the ability to turn ancient Greek sailors into wild animals. She’s ninety-four and basically a princess and if this is a horrible choice, then he is the one that’s going to pay. Honestly though, Brian’s already on a deadly quest to save the world. In the shadow of such a stupid, self-sacrificing decision, he’s not going to bother with second thoughts. If he gets turned into a pig, then Clay and Sierra can laugh at him once he’s back to normal. He’s having a good time. He’s not an idiot. He promises.
They’re all ready to leave this place.  Clay’s been distraught since they saw the victims of Project Excalibur, and Sierra can’t stand the noise. The three of them have been working to see where other elves might be. If they like to hide in ruins and forgotten villages, then the American West is full of possible locations. There’s so few people out here. That’s the problem though. Marin and Zerada have been very clear that their enemies know exactly where they’ve been staying, they just won’t risk an attack because there are so many people nearby. They will be hunted the moment they step out into the desert. Brian remembers the attack in Vya, that little Nevada ghost town. Clay mentioned the place to a local in another town just before he was charmed, and he assumes that the boy told on him. Of course, they also need to gather allies while maintaining utter secrecy.
Their only advantage is speed. Sierra’s car (The Audacity, for the years it took to make) is electric and the elves can charge it while they move. It can seat five, but it certainly won’t be as comfortable. She’s confident that it can handle going a hundred miles per hour, and that she can make repairs if it comes down to it. With illusion magic and relatively desolate highways, Brian’s told everyone to expect that pace. What that actually means is that they could get to Salt Lake City or Tucson by tonight, or easily reach the Atlantic Ocean by the Fourth of July. If they make up their plans as they go, the elves think they can outrun Ishtar’s forces. They’ll have to change roads often, travel constantly, and be ready for an ambush, but it’s possible. All of that sounds less stressful than finals week, so Brian’s down for it.
They’re leaving today, even though Zerada has booked the rooms for another night. Hopefully they’ll be lost in the shuffle of tourism and the elven government won’t notice they’ve left. Even as they leave the city, disappearing into the crowd remains their only hope. The United States of America has a population of nearly three hundred and thirty million. That’s a third as large as the entire elven world. Without data sorting algorithms (advanced technology breaks down around magic. He’s heard Sierra talking with Marin about the details), tech like license plate readers and facial recognition becomes far less useful. They’d still totally have been caught by now without Marin’s illusions, and they still have to take precautions.
The team has split up to do some tasks of their own. (jokes about not splitting up in a horror film have been shockingly rare).  Sierra and Marin are trying to check the car for tracking devices, though the pair might have gotten distracted. Clay’s taken on the job of organizing Marin’s messenger bag so they can actually find things in the heat of the moment, and Brian’s back in the room leaving a paper trail. On some level, he and his friends got into the colleges they did because of their fathers, but they are also very good at what they do. While Marin and Zerada ran off to wherever, the three of them scanned the entire Mountain Time Zone for places where elves might hide. There’s an old rocket testing facility in Utah surrounded by industrial waste, an abandoned site once used for creating chemical weapons, and, of course, thousands of square miles of not-quite untouched wilderness. He’s packing up most of their research, but leaving a little behind. Surely the elves will search their room soon.
The plan is to stay in the desert for a while longer.  However, most of what he’s leaving behind points north to Idaho and Montana. He’s no spy (he’s just read a few books about them) so his work isn’t anything particularly good. He imagines a bunch of paper-pushing bureaucrats in a place that looks straight out of Middle Earth getting fed up with the misinformation, but they probably won’t fall for it. Either way, they’re heading for the hottest region in the nation, and he’s worried how well Marin can handle it. He’s agile, but weak. No, not weak. The elven prince is fragile. Brian remembers his carnival duel against him and how Marin never lost a game about accuracy or balance. He’s certainly an athlete, just not the same type as Brian.
There is a quick beep from the door. He bolts upright, hand moving to the holster on his belt. The door swings open. A tall woman smiles back at him. Zerada Adust. Brian slowly moves his hand away from the gun and smiles. Her hair is loose and she wears a stylish cut-out shirt that is probably as red as his blushing face.
“Don’t go and do Ishtar’s job for her,” she laughs. “Are you almost done? It’s about high noon”.
“Yeah, I was just checking to make sure we hadn’t left anything important behind”. He feels this need to justify himself to Zerada, but why shouldn’t he? She has the easy confidence of a person who knows she is the most important person on a team. It’s been a long time since Brian was the star.
“Sorry to drag you away on this quest. There isn’t much where we’re going”.
“You have no idea how human you sound. I’m from a desert family, and they love this stuff”. She leans against a wall and says something with what he guesses is a fancy elven accent, “our burden as nobility to preserve the worlds”.
“But you wanted more”. It’s not a question. He’s already heard about Zerada’s love for all things new and thrilling. It’s a desire he recognizes, and what drew him to her in the first place.
“I do”.
“So the desert is it?”
“So the desert it is”.
He gathers the few items that aren’t already with Clay and brushes imaginary dust off of his shorts. Brian has no delusions that Zerada is a kind woman. He is a passing interest to her, a boy clever and attractive enough to have earned some of her time on this deadly mission. He tells himself she would sacrifice him in an instant to save herself. It’s almost refreshing.  He throws an arm around Zerada and gives her a kiss. There’s no debts or legacies, just two people in the same space with no reason to do anything else. Unlike Clay, he is not a person with a need to plan. Worrying about something bad just hurts you twice, right?
He finds the other three members of the party gathered around the car on the top level of an underground parking garage. The ceiling lights are dim and warm, but the car itself has Back To The Future style rear doors and cool fluorescent accents. It’s a prototype from her father’s company. It had too many flaws to go to production, but she and her mom tried to fix one themselves. The Audacity, as the Brackens call it, looks like a spaceship. It matches the Vegas Strip, but not the infrastructure underneath it, and it will be all too recognizable out in the desert.  Sierra unplugs the charging cord and tosses Brian the keys. (Luckily, the curse has mostly affected her left arm). The car can more or less drive itself but always obeys the speed limit.
They take their seats and the doors swing down into place. Brian is the driver, his sleek black sunglasses resting on the dashboard until they get to the surface. Zerada has been offered the passenger seat again, mostly because no one dares to take it from her. Clay and Marin sit by each back window, and Sierra is in the middle. He puts the car into drive. Clay fiddles with a paper map and passes it forward. Their first stop is a state park less than an hour away, just for fun.
The car radio crackles to life as they leave the garage and reach the surface.
“New stop or new state means new music!” Brian says triumphantly, as he’s the next one in their rotation. The radio is still set to Sierra’s 80s rock.  He prefers modern pop, specifically the more hip-hop side of things. He’s not really musical though. The Vegas Strip is a road lined by hotels on either side. All of that flair has been replaced by square buildings and dust by the time that they pull onto the Las Vegas Freeway. Nothing ahead of them rises higher than three stories above the dry ground. He can see mountains ahead, and the skyscrapers of The Strip are clear in his rearview mirror.
They drive. He expects that the scruffy bushes and bare stone hills will be very familiar after the next few days. The whole situation is strange with Zerada in the car. She upsets the balance. Before, it had been the three of them and Marin the outsider, but he was nervous and willing to adapt. Zerada is calm and stunning and when she takes his hand while he leaves the car on autopilot he can almost feel Clay and Sierra sharing a look from the back. In an attempt to avoid talk shows, (it's fun to listen for celebrities they've met, but one host mentioned Sierra and ruined her entire day) they hear three Billie Eilish songs in ten minutes. Sierra puts her headphones on and Marin starts to argue that he has CDs in his bag. Brian shoots back that they’re all jazz and blues recordings from 1970 at the latest. Marin corrects him on the genres but not the time period. Two stops or states from now, it will be his turn to choose the music.
After thirty minutes or so, a crag of rock rises from the tan desert. It is such a vibrant red that it looks almost like someone changed the saturation and hue of a photo. It looms beside them like a breaking wave and Brian doesn’t need his directions to tell him that they have almost reached their first stop. It’s the hottest part of the afternoon as they pull their car beside a standing rock in Valley of Fire State Park. They can’t stay for long. They need to be far away by the time they set up camp, and the heat feels like stepping into an oven. Still, he wants to hike and bike or climb the smooth sandstone. Dry heat isn’t like wet heat. He never realizes just how high the temperature has climbed until he stops for a rest and realizes that his mouth feels like he’s been eating the sand. He drinks from a water bottle and looks up.
A metal staircase clings to the side of the rock. There are some other tourists nearby, or standing at the top. The metal railings are too hot to hold as the five of them climb the steps to a platform overlooking a slanted rock wall. He’s no geologist, but the rock is covered with a black tarnish, and that tarnish has been scraped away to show symbols. There are humanoid drawings, animals with horns, and geometric shapes. A sign calls them petroglyphs, rock carvings, and explains that they are about two thousand years old. Thirty human lifetimes, or just four elven ones. Marin and Zerada can trace their families back at least twice that far into the past. He stares at the carvings, and then back at the tourists, and down to the shining car. He’d been hoping to double back to the Grand Canyon at some point, but suddenly Brian has no desire to feel small. He rests his head on Zerada’s shoulder on the way back down. This, at least, is important.
………….
I drove from Vegas to Valley of Fire a couple of years ago. The rocks really do look edited in person. Like this!
Tumblr media
Also, to make it clear, Brian is an idiot. He is eighteen and he knows full well that Zerada specializes in charms, mental manipulation, and power. This will not end well.

No. 1 Cal Opens Rowing Championships Strong
V8+, 2V8+, 3V8+ Win Heats
WEST WINDSOR, N.J., – The No. 1 California men's rowing team opened the Intercollegiate Rowing Association (IRA) Championships in dominating fashion as all three varsity eights won their opening round heats at Mercer Lake on Friday morning to secure a spot in Saturday's A/B semifinals. The first and second varsity eights also had the fastest times of the day among their respective groups, while the varsity four had the fastest time in the time trials. "It was a good day of racing across the entire team," Cal head coach Scott Frandsen said. "There is a lot of racing still ahead of us, but I'm pleased with the results and initial performances of each boat. We'll have to get better and better each day, but I'm happy with how the team handled everything today. We're not celebrating the wins, but it is a good sign of team strength and depth that all four of our boats won their preliminary races and can build confidence off of that." The varsity eight opened the morning and took an early two-seat lead right off the start over Dartmouth, which was followed by Brown. At about the 1,000-meter mark, the Bears built a slight open-water gap over Brown and continued to manage the lead. The Brown Bears pushed Cal over the second half of the race, walking down over a half-boat. But the Golden Bears' pace was strong enough to hold them off, finishing just over a second ahead for first place in a time of 05:32.200. In the second varsity eight race, Cal got off to a strong start and took the early lead which quickly grew to seven seats over Dartmouth by the 500-meter mark. The Bears grew their lead to a slight bit of open water by the halfway mark. Cal didn't let up and continued to push over the second half of the race, growing its lead to over a boat of open water over Dartmouth to cruise to the win in a time of 05:42.991. In the third varsity eight competition, Cal and Brown moved ahead of the pack early before the Bears were able to take a six-seat lead after the first 500 meters. The Bears grew their lead by the halfway mark, generating a bow-to-stern advantage over Brown. Cal maintained its pace to keep a comfortable lead and cruise to the win and a spot in the A/B semifinal in a time of 05:49.404. The varsity four went out in the seventh slot for the time trials and came through with the fastest overall time in 6:16.974 to advance to the A/B/C semifinal round. Friday Results V8+ 1. Hello! Inspired by that pastel crush post, may you share headcanons or a drabble of Raihan falling for a witty n strong jock/goth trainer who is basically trying to become the flying type gym leader in Galar (w a few dragons on their team too, like a noivern or an altaria), they came to the region due to their fascination w history/ruins, so Raihan's first meeting w them is in the vault as they admired the tapestries? (the dragon finds a new treasure within his vault 🤭) Love your writing btw 💖
Thank you! Again, I apologize for the delay. I have no excuses besides being a slow goof who is easily distracted by absolutely everything. I made a drabble for this, so I hope you enjoy! ♡
🐉 Raihan crushing on a future Flying-type gym leader 🐉
The atmosphere of Hammerlocke's vault was eerily quiet, not a single sound from the outdoors pierced the walls. It was the perfect environment for you, allowing you to be lost in your thoughts as you admired the tapestries. They told the story of Galar's beginnings, and it was fascinating to you.
Galar was a region filled with such a rich history, supported by vaults, ruins, monuments and art. It was the perfect region for a trainer that held passion and fascination for history such as yourself.
You held back a chuckle as you felt your pokÊballs containing your main partners, Altaria and Salamance, shake impatiently. They hated being contained for long periods of time as they would rather soar through the skies, keeping a watchful eye on you.
They have been with you since you were a young child. The three of you have been through many adventures together, and they have travelled all around your home region of Hoenn by your side. They were the ones who fought their hardest for you to achieve your dream of someday becoming a gym leader specializing in Flying-type pokĂŠmon.
"Simmer down in there. I swear, I'm almost done," you said, lightly patting your pokĂŠballs.
As you plunged back into your own little world, you hadn't noticed that a new presence had entered the vault.
When Raihan was notified by one of his gym trainers that a newcomer had entered his vault, he was curious to see what kind of person it was. Needless to say, he was pleasantly surprised to see how invested you looked. Hell, you hadn't even noticed him enter the vault, or approach you. He was a man of history himself, so he could respect any trainer that showed the same respect and admiration for Galar's history.
As you were admiring historical treasures, he found himself admiring you. You had a style that he was particularly fond of: varsity jacket, ripped jeans, baseball cap and military boots, all in dark shades and colours. You seemed to be going for a darker jock look, and it suited you quite well, in his opinion. Your eyes seemed to shine, expression cutely contorted into one of concentration.
With a smirk, Raihan cleared his throat, wanting to get your attention
Your eyes darted to your side, blinking at the new presence. "Oh, sorry…. I didn't notice you there."
Raihan shook his head, waving you off. "Don't worry about it. You looked like you were deep in thought there."
You chuckled. "What can I say? I've been a sucker for history ever since I visited my home region's ruins when I was a child."
"Foreigner, huh?"
You grinned. "Yes! Proud Hoenn native!"
"Well then, welcome to Galar. The name's Raihan, Hammerlocke's vault keeper and gym leader," he said, puffing his chest slightly as he was very proud of his titles.
"Gym leader, huh? Lucky man, it's always been a dream of mine to be a gym leader. I'm (name), by the way," you said.
"Really now? Is that why you came to Galar?" He asked.
"Well, partly. I also happen to think that Galar is one of the richest regions in history, and it's absolutely beautiful. It's nothing like the humid forestry environment that Hoenn has," you said.
"Hm… maybe we should battle someday. We could test if you've got what it takes to be a gym leader," he said, partly joking.
You looked at him with a small smirk gracing your features. "Sweetheart, I know I've got what it takes, and I'll gladly take you up on your offer. That is…. If they're not just hollow words, yes?"
Raihan blinked, surprised at your eager acceptance to his little challenge. You had a similar confident attitude as he did. He couldn't help but smirk slightly as he wondered what kind of pokĂŠmon batted by your side for you to be so at ease in the presence of a powerful gym leader.
Once again, you felt your pokéballs shake, making you roll your eyes. "I should probably go… my Altaria and Salamance will have my head if I don't let 'em out of their pokéballs. Plus, I promised my team that I would let them roam around the Wild Area."
You chuckled when Raihan stood there, visibly looking like the cogs in his brain were spinning at the mention of Altaria and Salamance. The man was a dragon lover, you could tell that much by his physical appearance, choice of colours and clothing.
"Be seein' you, right? I still need to kick your butt in battle," you said with a brow raised.
As you started to walk away, Raihan snapped out of his stupor. "H-Hey, wait!"
You peaked behind your shoulder. "Yes?"
You had to hold back a laugh as Raihan fiddled with his hoodie. He looked like a child that was about to ask his parents something outrageous.
"Would it be weird if I come with you? I just-"
"You want to meet my dragons, right?"
He nodded rapidly, a big dorky grin on his face. "We don't have them here in Galar! Pleeease?"
"It's fine with me. Come on, dragon boy."
~~~~~~
Your time in the Wild Area had quickly turned into a playdate between your pokĂŠmon and Raihan's. His Goodra rested her head in your lap, seeming to have taken a liking to the head pats you had to offer.
Your Gliscor, Talonflame and his Flygon raced each other in the sky. His Duraludon and your Aerodactyl were play fighting while your Gyarados preferred to swim in the lake on his own.
Your Altaria and Salamance were getting smothered in attention by Raihan. He was an absolute dork when it came to dragons, and it showed quite a bit.
Raihan was ruffling Altaria's feathers, cooing about how fluffy she was. Altaria had no idea how to react, she sent you confused glances here and there that screamed 'Help, mom'. Salamance sounded like he was laughing at her, which probably was a bit of revenge for him as Altaria had laughed at him when Raihan kept taking selfies with him.
Raihan glanced at all of the pokĂŠmon that surrounded both of you. He had to admit: he was impressed with your team. Specializing in a specific type meant that you would need to have good type coverage to counter your weaknesses, and your team delivered. Your Gliscor could deal with rock and electric pokĂŠmon, and your Talonflame and Aerodactyl could deal with ice pokĂŠmon.
Your pokĂŠmon definitely looked well trained. Looking at Aerodactyl and Duraludon who were play fighting, he noticed how his ace dragon was visibly struggling to keep up with the prehistoric pokĂŠmon. The urge to battle you was growing as he felt that you could give him a run for his money.
He looked back at you and smiled softly at the sight. You were laughing loudly as his Goodra nuzzled you affectionately, you didn't even care that you were all slimy.
If you would let him, Raihan would love to get to know you on a more personal level, and maybe he could help you achieve your dream of being a Flying-type gym leader right here, in Galar. You had so much potential.
In the end, he ended up finding an extra treasure in his vault.
THE OLD SALEM POST
Our Local Salem SC News each Monday to be enjoyed and shared!
Volume 3 Issue 1 Week of January 7th 2019 Contact: [email protected] Distributed to local businesses, town hall and library.
EDITOR: I hope the Christmas message is alive in your heart as we begin a new year. New Year, new begin- nings. Christmas lasts through Epiphany at our home, the Twelve Days of Christmas. I enjoy the Christmas tree and the Nativity and never feel rushed to take it down. Our tree this year has special meaning because it was cut on our own property. It is like a really big Charlie Brown tree, but I think it is one of our prettiest trees ever. Each special ornament can be seen more purely, hanging between un-crowded limbs. Simple, pure, un-crowded and focused: Sounds like a good new year resolution. **** On another note I urge Salem residents to contact your Council candidates Jimmy Barker and Tony Grogan to know more about them and their thoughts and plans for our town. It is important for voters to know their candidates and feel confident when casting a vote for your voice in our small town. ***** THANK-YOU to some private individuals I have seen picking up litter on the road sides! I saw one on Lake Cherokee Road and another at the corner of Alexander Road and Hwy 130. Clean roadsides equal the same joy as a clean house! I****Please send me any news you would like shared.*** Share your joy! Share your faith. Share love in your community,! LRM
This Was Commissioned By the Vampire
On Modern Mythology
Just because paganism isn’t a largely accepted term anymore, humans have always, and will always continue to be polytheistic, it’s just that these tiny associations and devotions have become so normalized, so pushed down into monotony, that so many don’t even notice.  However, many a truth is spoken in jest, and some seem to realize more than others, even if they themselves believe their joking.  All fairytales and mythologies spring as trees grown around seeds of truth., though indeed I’ve changed the names in this particular one to lend it more to fiction.
The vampire is called Nona, and this piece is dedicated to her, as she started it with the idea of a curious but lazy vampire hanging around a group of fae in order to score free meals and because of friendships with members of the court.  Did you know that a group of fae is called a court? We generally prefer team, because that’s what we are, technically, in the eyes of the school.  But if the school was aware of the Geass, they weren’t telling, and we sure as hell weren’t asking.
What we did know was that we practiced at the Ridge, the Ridge had rules, and we followed those rules. Because of that, or possibly relating to that, the rules that governed the rest of the high school didn’t apply the same way to the team.  We collectively referred to this as “the geass” because that’s what Cait called it— and as a captain, and one of the few actual fae on the team, she was more versed in the nuances of that type of magic than the rest of us.
As for the Ridge, as far as any of us could tell, it was Liminal, and possibly on a couple Ley lines, which was weird, because it wasn’t near anything important. Even the Kaspers, being descended from one of the old forest gods themselves, couldn’t tell much besides the fact that the Ridge was infused with old, old, magic, older than even their own lineage.  Hence, its informal rules were handed down runner to runner as the team initiated new members and lost seniors, the gospel to a strange religion of pain and camaraderie, positive vibes and negative splits.
If you didn’t realize, we’re runners, and the Ridge is our training grounds, although such a crude term is insufficient to describe what it is exactly.
Anyways, The Rules:
Never run alone.  The familiar can become new again without a second pair of eyes
Always wear a watch, or run with someone who does.  Time keeps its own pace in the trails
Run warmup loop before starting any other circuits.  The Ridge likes it when you say hello
Don’t leave anyone behind, and don’t become separated from your group.  The forest throws voices back which are cast into it, especially near Cop Lake
The bent willow over the lake is the baptismal site under the three gods; Paceus, Speedeus, and Obeseus
There are apples to be found on Mother trail, but only if you aren’t looking
Runs aren’t complete until you slap the sign with the group you ran with.  Don’t walk before you hit the sign, you’re not done yet
(rest of the story is under the cut)
Our Gods, and the High Priest
It was one of those mornings that the sun had seemed to rise early and burn off the dew that it could reach.  Late June, but feeling like August.  By nine am, it was near eighty degrees, and we were all mostly done with our sprints, held at Palzikistan in the burning sun.  Twos and fours weren’t all that bad, just tedious in the suffocating heat.  The geass was buzzing with languor and breathlessness, thirst, and anticipation.  The push for those last fifty yards, the last twenty seconds.  The baseball diamond we did our sprints around was at full sun, and the short oaks and coach’s car provided little shade.
Finally, the last of us finished and stood in a loose cluster around the water bottles for coach to assign cool-down.  As he talked, [cool-down upper loop or any two miles in the trails  back down to the casino for stretch as long as we were back by……… 9:30] the geass shifted, the consensus being that we weren’t really going to do cool-down, but run off as a group and pretend to.  The geass wasn’t really good at specifics, but the likely destination was Cop Lake, being on upper loop and quite desirable being that it was summer and we just ran sprints.
The varsity guys took the lead of the pack, jogging up the path to Cop Lake to “run the loop”, and the rest of us followed, slowing at the trail head’s bottle neck to tiptoe our way up the reverse bank of the lake, gripping onto tree roots and watching our footing to ensure that none of us slid right back down.  Isaac, Chris, and Chris were up in a flash, their abilities allowing them to bushwhack straight up, while the rest of us stuck to the trail.  Must be nice to be part mountain goat.
Up the trail, we went left until we got to a gnarled willow, trunk bent and the primary branch out almost horizontal to the shallow water of the lake below.  Isaac climbed up the trunk and out the primary limb, standing up with confidence that was impressive, especially from someone with hooves climbing a tree.  As we watched, he announced that it was the time for the baptisms in the eyes of Paceus, Speedeus, and Obeseus for any second-years who hadn’t been baptized yet, and Cait explained that the ceremony entailed climbing up the tree, the High Priest (Isaac) saying the rites, and then jumping into the lake.
Stehlar was up first.  He climbed up the tree after Isaac and crouched over the lake on the twisted limb, which swayed with the addition of his weight.  Someone behind me whispered about one or both of them falling into the lake, and a few of us watched with a nervous eye, waiting for the inevitable.  Still others watched the trail for coach, as technically we were supposed to be on cool-down on the loop around the lake, not jumping in it.  But mostly we were watching Isaac stand on the limb with Chris, proclaiming him to be baptized in the eyes of Paceus, the provider of the intelligence and endurance to run a smart race; Speedeus, the giver of speed to pass competitors in the course; and Obeseus, protector from the fats.  He yelled this to the lake, claiming it his right as the current high priest.
Then, like an unsure baby bird trying to fly the nest, Chris tried to jump off the limb, which heaved heavily under his weight before he plummeted like a stone into the lake.  Several whooped, and soon Isaac and a few others joined him, pleading that we were all so sweaty anyways, coach wouldn’t notice the extra level of wet at stretch.  Anyways, if he did, he didn’t say.
It’s Rude to Geass a Vampire
“Did anyone feed Nona?” I asked at the end of practice, not seeing the bat in either of her forms anywhere in the casino.
“I did”, Chris (Bertola) snickered, grinning in a way that I knew I wasn’t going to like what he’d done.
“Chris… you didn’t give her your own, did you?” Vampires could handle the blood of the geass’d, but the more potent the effect of the geass on someone, the more… curious the effects of their blood would be on any bloodsucker unfortunate to prey on them.  It affected everyone differently, and some vampires even chose to drink fae or geass’d blood, but since the geass on the team involved the compulsion to run, and Nona wasn’t a fan of cardio, she generally steered clear, especially of the varsity runners.
“Nah,” Chris answered, “I told her to go ask Wert”
“Oh god,” I covered my face with my palm.  “What happened.”
“She went that way,” he said, pointing out over the warm up hill, “Faster than I’ve ever seen her fly.”
“CHRIS” I exclaimed, “How many times do i have to tell you, geassing a vampire is extremely rude, and Nona doesn’t like cardio! She’s probably a few miles into Canada by now!”
“Maybe she’ll make it all the way back to Romania.”
“Wrong direction, bird brain, I’ll see if I can get Marin to catch her before she gets too far.” It truly was lucky that we had a venti on the team at times like this.
The Cult Meetings Before First Period
The best part about secrets is if they're out in the open all the time, people care less.  It might be scandalous if someone’s cheating, but if the whole school knows and doesn’t care, then it’s old news.  This was the principle most of us applied to the school rules.  The whole school was cheating on the reality most people believed in, but since we all knew it, it wasn’t really that big of a deal.
Hence, technically the unwritten school rules required that students use glamours and refrain from taking advantage of any… supernatural abilities to excel in academics or other school activities, but like the cell phone rule, it was largely ignored as much as possible.  So what if a senior’s footsteps sounded more like the clomping of hooves as they loped down the hallway to gym, because he was clearly wearing sneakers.  Or that the selkies and sirens, and a few veela dominated the choral and dramatic arts, because no one could really prove anything without admitting that something might be amiss in the first place.
Such was observed with the clumping of the team before first period in the second floor main hallway around the lockers of the Kaspers and Noot.  We still let people through, and there weren’t any fights or misconduct involved with our gathering, so it was fine.  The rare human who had a locker in our clump was interesting to witness though.  Since the school was located on an old crossroads, mildly liminal itself, there weren’t really many true, pure-blooded humans, but then again it was hard to find a pure blood anything anymore, especially in america.  There were however a good many bloodlines that were extremely diluted, sometimes to the point where the family wasn’t even aware of their heritage, just moved to the town for some reason they couldn’t explain, drawn to it’s latent energy without even consciously knowing it.
In any case, on this particular day Maeve, a selkie removed several generations, was getting the percent error on the most recent chem lab from Liv and Noot.  I was sitting on the ground with Mason and Caleb, doing geometry homework and helping Mason with his bio, not that he needed it, really.  She must have realized something weird, like the fact that Sierra didn’t have a shadow (nephilim are beings of light therefore can’t create shadow), or that when Marin walked by there was a slight breeze even though we were indoors, because half joking, when Noot handed her lab back she asked “Jeez are any of you actually human?”
A bunch of us looked up, the upperclassmen smiling wryly.  A freshman raised his hand, unironic. Noot snorted without even looking up from her phone.
“Mason, put your hand down.”
Emma lowered it for him.
“Glucose is C6H12O6” I said, tapping his biology notes.  He paused and recorded the answer.  Maeve was back to laughing with Noot and Liv over chem, and Andrew had joined them next to Liv.  Elise and Angela were trying to see who could boil their water bottles faster, Elise using her breath and Angela relying on the tiny, green flames she held in her palm.  Mason watched this with a slightly vacant gaze.
“What did she mean, ‘are any of us human?’” he asked, confused, “I mean, I know Isaac and Stehlar are satyr, and Cait, Emily, and Oni are… something, and Elise, but the rest of the team is normal, right?”
I smirked. “Mason, very few people here are what you would consider fully human.  With this team in particular though, there is a geass involved.”  Intent magic was pretty strong, and it was a little weird he hadn’t noticed, or recognized it for what it was, especially because he himself was at least a quarter empath, whether he knew it or not.  They tended to be more sensitive to those kinds of magic than say, satyrs or venti.
“Isn’t that like a wish?” He inquired, watching as Elise’s water bottle boiled over, landing on Angela’s shoes and quickly evaporating again on contact.
“Kind of,” I started, “A geass is fae magic.  Very old, very powerful, and very finicky.  The geass on this team particularly connects us and keeps us safe, and allows the team to draw power off of our own running and the liminality of the Ridge, the catch being that it only lasts as long as we continue running, and is only as strong as our drive and dedication to it.  Higher mileage, greater geass affect, tighter the team gets, and the easier we fit into the Ridge.”
He nodded, picking at a corner of his homework. “What do you mean, draw power?”
“For those of us that aren’t human, it enhances any latent abilities that may have been diluted by the generations, and it allows all of us to recover faster, run longer, and also gives us a slight emotional connection beyond what you would consider normal empathy. Like… if someone got injured, we’d know, and also how to find them.”
“What does it do to humans?”
“Well, first, while under it’s effect, you’re not human, you’re more like a fae/human hybrid of some sort, I’m not sure what it’s called…. ask Cait.”
He nodded again, jotting down the next answer to his assignment and looked over at Angela and Elise again.  Elise was teaching Angela how to toast bread without burning it with her flames, though it was more comical to watch Elise herself breath fire onto her toast than Angela’s green palm flames (the later were more effective at not burning the toast).
“Without the geass are you human?” Mason asked, half-serious.
“Nah”
“What are you?” He asked, looking again pointedly at Angela and Elise.
“I’m not a dragon or a hedge witch, if that’s what you’re asking.”
“That’s not an answer.” he said, smiling with a huff.
“Fine,” I said, giving in, “Without the geass, I’m part immortal on my mother’s side.”  On the other side it was pretty obvious as to what I was, the last name Morozkovna didn’t exactly lend itself to subtlety.  But Mason, and most everyone else in the student population, didn’t know the evolution of Rus’ surnames and so almost no one ever asked, and no one ever knew.
A secret in plain site is much less exciting than one trying to hide.
“Without the geass am I human?”
“Nah,”
“WHAT?!”
The Eldritch Horror and the Cameraman
“Morozkovna” I heard from behind me, “Are the early frosts this year your doing?”
I turned around.
“Hi Messina,” I started, waving to him with my coffee, “Why would I have anything to do with it?”
Messina smiled, and time hiccoughed, the same junior that had just walked past doing it again, the world seeming for a second like a rewound cassette tape.  Very distinctive time magic.  I rolled my eyes.  It was too early in the morning to exorcise my cousin out of Messina.
“Mephisto, why the fuck are you possessing Nathan?” I asked, incredulous.
“He’s not possessing me.” Messina deadpanned, falling back into his normal voice. “I was just messing with you.”
“He was just a second ago, but since you’re able to apparently thwart possession in less than a second, please explain.”
Mephistopheles was a very old deity, chaos based, the illegitimate child of mortal fear of damnation and a nice cocktail of chaos magic and satanism.  Not as old as my parents, though the chaos part of him came from my father’s brother, making him my cousin!  Messina did have a fair bit of warlock in him, but even a full warlock would have a hard time freeing themselves of chaos magic and my idiot cousin.
“I summoned him, but used the wrong binding circle, I thought he was something besides what he was, and he escaped and possessed me.” Messina deadpanned.
“What got you back to being un-possessed that allowed you to keep some of his magic?”
“Oh no,” Messina corrected, ‘He’s still possessing my physical body, but after he possessed me I decided to possess him back.  He wasn’t too happy about that.”
“No, I wouldn’t think so,” I responded absently, still processing the fact that my idiot cousin got summoned, possessed Messina, and then got possessed by Messina.
“Hey, is he seeing this now?” I asked
“Yes,” he said, laughing, “He’s furious you’re laughing at him,” he paused, as if listening, “something about you being a weakling who couldn’t even light a candle against the roaring, centuries old flame that is his power.”
I lost it at the candle.  Well no shit Mephisto I can’t light a candle, my dominion is  winter.
“Make sure to watch plenty of hallmark movies,” I instructed Nathan, “He hates happy endings.”
Prerace
Fridays were interesting.  Especially later in the day.  The excitement of the students caused… curious occurrences and thin wearing glamours.  The chorus teacher wouldn’t hold any lessons after fifth period, because once a senior siren accidentally charmed a couple cellists in the next room over.  The halls were crowded, and the flow of time didn’t seem to follow the normal laws.  Even the teachers were affected, the english teacher’s horns and the smell of salt in one of the global teacher’s room not going unnoticed.  The team didn’t even bother with glamour on Fridays, or concealing the geass.  It was prerace, which meant a short workout and a pasta party.  Our honest excitement killed even the strongest of our glamours even before the geass magnified it a few times.  Glamours were concealment magic, and their price was restraint, making them simple to cast, but difficult to maintain when excited, or overly emotional in general.
Elise’s tail flickered in and out of existence, knocking backpacks at random.  Angela crackled with sage-green energy, and Chris didn’t even try to conceal his hooves has he came down the hall with Lily.  A pencil that Blake was holding sprouted a few leaves and tried to grow as he was doing trig, so someone gave him a mechanical. Even I let go a little, and frost creeped up the sides of the locker I was leaning against. Sierra was legitimately glowing, I’m pretty sure that Ruby’s feet weren’t touching the ground, and Nyah’s pants changed pattern with her movements, the bars of black and white that made up the lines in the geometric pattern folding over themselves and twisting like a kaleidoscope.
Finally, after eight long classes, school was over, and it was time for prerace.  At 3:30 at least, Mau was first.  Since we were banned from wall ball, Mau has taken the place for favorite pre practice game  [besides drawasaurus, that is].  Mau is a game that was originally spawned from the Germanic game Mau Mau, though it is played differently every time.  The only things that new players or outsiders to the game are told is as follows:
We’re playing Mau
We can’t tell you the rules, but it’s played similar to uno
While the game is in session we can’t talk
Generally, you lose until you figure out how the game is played.  Sitting and watching the game played works too, but you learn faster when your own neck i s on the line; figuratively, of course.  It’s taken as seriously as any practice, and as competitively as any race.  Communication through the geass and other means with other players was also forbidden during Mau.  Cait took care of that with a temporary contract agreed to verbally by all of the players by picking up the cards.  Fae magic prevents a breech in contract, and besides most of us were non-human enough to be unable to even before that measure.
I get my hand and it frosts over immediately, its so bad.  Messina smiles slowly at it from across the table, he being the only one partially exempt from the communication rule, as I’m not sure Cait knows about Mephisto.  Emily starts the round, at Cait’s command of “Meeting in session”.
We all pick up our cards and Emily flips a 7.
For Donndre Smith, 'It's all passion': Coach, teacher and more
March 9, 2020 for the Columbia Missourian
It’s a quiet, rainy Sunday morning at Hickman High School except for the squeaking of sneakers and the bouncing of a basketball in one of the gyms.
Donndre Smith, head junior varsity coach at Hickman for the last three years, instructs a teen to shoot a free throw.
Then another. And another.
The training usually comes with a fee, but at the end of this session, Smith says the student owes him nothing ... as long as he continues to train.
Between coaching basketball and teaching his first year of special education at Battle High School, Smith mentors student athletes on any court he can find — no matter which school they're from — and goes beyond his roles.
On Instagram, Smith posts numerous videos of his trainees dunking and shooting free throws and layups. On Twitter, he shares happenings in the classroom and on the court. Both platforms allow him to empower youth.
"When I was younger, I knew I was going to impact the world," Smith said. "I just didn’t know how."
This comes from someone who, as a kid, didn’t know if he was going to make it out of his neighborhood.
Smith, 27, the youngest of four in a single-parent family, grew up on the south side of Chicago, where gang violence remains part of life.
"I used to get jumped for no reason, just for being in a different neighborhood," Smith said. "When I moved out here (to Columbia), I thought, 'I can go to school safe.'"
In Chicago, Smith needed to cross a bridge from his 71st Street neighborhood — which a gang of his former friends had claimed as their territory — to 67th Street to play more competitive basketball. He said if he wanted to be the best, he needed to beat the best. However, some of the players on 67th belonged to a rival gang.
At one point, a member of the 67th Street gang personally came to Smith and warned him that other members were going to jump him. But Smith said the 67th Street member told the others to "leave him alone." He said he still suffers from that childhood trauma.
Basketball has been his anchor since those Chicago days.
Smith's middle school coach in Chicago, Gary Pearson, gave him rides to keep him off the streets where he knew Smith wasn't safe. Pearson also instilled confidence in Smith outside of basketball.
"He coached to make us (players) better people rather than just beating the other team," Smith said.
Smith’s mother, Shirley Moffit-Smith, moved him and his sister Sha-nicka to Missouri for safety when he was 13. His older brother, Victor, remained in Chicago, and his other sister, Jan-nicka, was in California.
In Columbia, Smith attended Hickman, where he met Amand Hardiman and formed a basketball brotherhood. Hardiman, who coached at Hickman alongside Smith from 2017 to 2019, said his friend’s experiences help him empathize with struggling youth in town.
"'Dre' has seen a lot," Hardiman said. "He's grown up in situations that many of us would never want to even think about, and he hasn’t allowed his past to deter him from helping other kids recognize they have value and potential. They can do more with their life than they’re expected to."
In 2016, Jan-nicka, Smith's oldest sister, was killed by her husband in a case of domestic violence in St. Louis. Smith says it was devastating in part because his family thought they had moved away from violence.
But his sister’s death helped him step forward to be a leader. "I wake up and do what I do because she has three kids,” Smith says.
In the classroom, Smith values accountability and respect, but he can also be a friend. When he worked summer school sessions at an elementary school, he joined Uno games and busted moves in dance battles at recess. At the high school level, he sometimes drops tips on owning a credit card or buying a car.
"Doing things with the kids moves them because they see you’re not above anything," Smith says. "Relationship-building is the strongest part of both jobs, without a doubt."
He embraces being a father to his wife's 9- and 14-year-old children. Smith never had a father figure but finds being one makes him stronger. When he became a father, he knew he wanted to value "honesty, trust, perseverance and success."
Jarvis Jennings, a former basketball player at Hickman, remembers when Smith pulled him out of a rough patch during his senior year.
"Stuff wasn’t going my way, and I was trying to be the victim," Jennings says. "He never let me play that role."
At a Feb. 26 game against St. Louis University High School this season, Smith paces the sideline, following his team from offense to defense and shouting instructions to his players: "Deny! Deny! Deny!" on defense. "Board! Board! Board!" after a missed shot.
With his team down three in the final minute, Smith's coaching ramps up; he's so into the action, he nearly bumps into the referee on the court.
Smith says his courtside energy can sometimes be misconstrued as "ghetto." During a recent game at Lake of the Ozarks, Hickman was down 20 points and Smith got the feeling that the referees and the crowd wanted him to give up. No matter the score, he continued to coach hard and noticed people in the stands were staring at him.
"But it’s all passion. I don’t want people to get that confused," Smith says. "That’s me spreading love, and (the players) know that."
Hardiman recalls one of the first times he watched Smith coach. At Quincy University, the JV team was ahead by 13 points; Smith rounded up the players and started joking with them about how well they were playing.
"In the flip of a switch, he gets super intense," Hardiman says, then acts it out to prove the point about the team's efforts: "'This isn’t funny. We should be beating them by more. Why don’t you expect more of yourselves?' He knows what it’s like to not come from much and he knows how hard it is to get to the next level."
Smith wants to be accepted the same way a teacher or coach with similar experience, skill, intelligence and college degree is, he says.
"You get two sides of it. People are going to love you, or people are going to judge you," he says. "It doesn’t help that I have dreads. It doesn’t help that I have Jordans − because now I’m starting to fit the stereotype, my community. My biggest stepping stone is getting people to believe."
In February, Smith was given a staff recognition award at Battle in honor of Black History Month for supporting black students at Battle and in the community.
"Even if you don’t know each other, if he can help you, he will," Jennings says. "Everyone’s under his wing and everybody loves him."
Hickman's basketball season came to a close recently, and in a few months, Smith will finish his first year of teaching at Battle. He recalls seeing the results of the first test he gave there.
"I was blown away that I could actually teach," Smith said. "I taught a lesson, challenged kids, built activities around a concept, and they grasped the concept and did well."
~ Coach’s Log ~ Driving the Trailer and the Burden of the Cox-Coach ~ June 3, 2018
Its the beginning of summer and boy is it hot in the south. I may not be outside all that much, but its instant regret as soon as you open the front door.
This is the first year I won't be in my home town for the summer. Its odd, but honestly the only thing still there for me is my parents and the juniors. I've got a job here in Auburn and I have to spend time studying for the GRE. Its the start of senior year for me and its more bitter than sweet.
I know I don't say much about them, but Auburn University club rowing has been my life for the past three years. The group is made of such wild people that I can't believe I've met because they were curious about rowing. Only two or three of us have experience in rowing; most of our team joined the sport in college. If a team full of novices isn't enough of a handful, we have no coach. Its a group of rowers with max 3 years of experience and no single person guiding them. The coxswains (all two of us) have taken up the job of coaching from within the boat.
There's a point I feel I should say that all coxswains and coaches need to know if its not clear enough: coaching and coxing are similar, but completely different.
Coxswains are mini coaches some might say. While I agree that coxes are responsible for driving home technique, the main teacher is the coach. Coaches plan practices, introduce concepts, oversee drills, along with correcting flaws only seen from outside the boat. Expecting coxswains (even varsity ones) to do all this in addition to their own job inside the boat is a bad move. They are two separate roles for a reason. Its a lesson that I'm having a hard time learning personally.
My team has no coach. Two coxswains take the novice boats and teach them what they can. We make due with what we have and I'm so proud of what we've accomplished so far. But the fact remains the same: coxswains should not be the coach at the same time.
Its a hard pill to swallow for my pride. I take the novice men and teach them what I know from the coxswain seat. For years I've been convinced that we could maintain this uneasy balance of power and knowledge. I'm seeing it clearly now in my last year that its only been hurting our team. Our two coxswains can't be everywhere at once. The varsity team who is under the direction of new coxes is suffering. They have no one to help them because the only ones who can are with the novice rowers. The novice team is suffering because coxswains can only do so much inside the boat.
As the newly elected president, its a problem that I need to deal with. We can't attract coaches because we can't pay much and our practices have to be at 4 am. Its a bad situation that can't be maintained for long. I want to do something before I leave, but i'm not sure what I can do.
On paper i'm the president and head coach of the team. But as I said before, I can't be both cox and coach. Besides, i'm uncomfortable with the thought of having that much power. Not that I think i'd abuse it, but because I know I could and I don't know what the next year will bring. I've though about stepping down as a cox and just coaching for us but that would open up a new can of worms to deal with. We would be down one cox (already a slim resource) and I don't think it would be wise for someone as close to the team as I am to coach it. If anyone has suggestions (or knows a coach who would help us for cheap) please please please pass it on.
Enough of the slightly depressing rant-like stuff.
I actually have some useful advice for new coaches too! Being in charge now, i'm responsible for making sure the boat trailer gets to where it needs to be. The brakes on ours are a bit sketchy so i took it to get fixed earlier this week. I borrowed a truck from a friend and took a few rowing buds with me to the lake.
Disclaimer: I have never actually driven a truck nor towed a trailer before. You can imagine how I felt going into this.
In the time it took to drive the truck out to our lake, I was feeling confident. I learned how to drive in an expedition, so using a large vehicle was slowly but surely coming back to me. I had two female rowers with me (both of which had limited knowledge of driving boat trailers) to help. Backing the truck up went surprisingly well despite one of my helpers not directing me very well (it was her first time though, so no hard feelings). The new jack I bought recently made hitching up super fast and less scary than before. Safety chains were crossed and hooked up. Chocks were removed from the wheels. The only thing we had an issue with, because of course there would be an issue, was that we couldn't get the plug into the truck so we didn't have brake lights. I had a passenger use hand signals instead. It shouldn't be an issue in the future since we always rent trucks with better towing compatibility, but the trailer wasn't moving far and was empty so a friends truck did the job fine.
First advice I had always heard from people who drove it before me: take it slow and turn wide. I knew it well at this point since I heard it at least six times. What I didn't expect was how wide I needed to turn. I enunciated my turn as instructed, yet still clipped the grass on the side of the road. Seriously, turn extra-wide. Like way more than needed extra wide. I ended up hopping a curb at one point even though I thought I was good. The taking it slow part of the advice really came in handy then. Good news was that our trailer isn't super wide. It only holds three boats across so I didn't feel too uneasy with driving it on the open road. Turns were my only issue so I know what I need to watch out for.
Another thing I learned is that using your side mirrors is a requirement. In my small little car I can get away with just using the rear-view mirror primarily but that's a no-go with the trailer. You just can't see your corners very well. In addition, when the trailer is full of boats you're not likely to see anything behind you anyway. Get used to turning your head a little more often to check those mirrors if you aren't already.
I honestly can't say much about backing the trailer up. When I arrived to the workshop they had me pull up to park. The man directing me did give me hints about backing up a trailer which were very helpful. The best one was that when reversing, put your hand on the bottom of your steering wheel and move your hand in the direction you want the trailer to go. It made the thought of backing up the trailer a little more bearable. I'm not looking forward to putting it back once its fixed though. Our area where we park it requires us to snake it down a hill going backwards. It usually takes 20 minutes at least to get it in, so it'll be fun doing it for the first time in about a week.
My last piece of advice regarding trailers is don't do it alone. Always have at least one person with you when you drive it. You never know when you'll get into a tight spot and need someone to watch the sterns. Everything looks different from the inside of the truck than the outside, so bring someone with you to direct you especially if you're new to it. Also, practicing somewhere that's not a public roadway is not a bad idea at all. I didn't have a truck to practice with until the day I had to move it and it wasn't too bad because i had been watching people drive it for years. There really is no substitute for experience though.
PLEASE please please be careful when driving boat trailers. They seem long and scary at first, but when you get used to it they aren't terrible. Don't let yourself get too comfortable, but please don't stress too much. I was a mess of worry for a few days before I drove it, but it seriously wasn't that bad.
If 105 lb, 21 year old female coxswain/president me with no experience can handle it, I guarantee you can too. Just take it slow and use the buddy system. Good luck to all those out there who drive boat trailers!
PORTVILLE — In two seasons of varsity soccer at Chautauqua Lake, Ian Riedesel had never scored a goal.
He picked the perfect time to score his first.
Riedesel scored in the 70th minute Thursday evening to send the fourth-seeded Thunderbirds to a 1-0 victory over No. 1 Portville in a Section VI Class C semifinal.
“I had these guys in modified for a couple of years and these guys work hard,” Chautauqua Lake coach Mike Putney said. ” … When you can get a group of guys who work hard and listen, great things are going to happen.”
Next up for Chautauqua Lake is a meeting on Dutch Hollow Road with No. 2 Maple Grove on Saturday afternoon at 1:30. The Thunderbirds, who will be seeking their first sectional crown since winning back-to-back titles in 1998 and 1999, handed the Red Dragons their lone loss of the season, 3-2, last Friday.
“We’re playing well. They play with passion and they meet the challenge,” Putney said. ” … Maple Grove is a phenomenal team. … They are the benchmark for everybody. You go out there and you just try your best.”
Chautauqua Lake’s spot in the championship game hung in the balance for most of the game Thursday until the Thunderbirds took advantage of a throw-in deep in Portville territory.
Senior Hunter Harris quickly picked up the ball on the sideline and threw it in Riedesel’s direction toward the outside of the 18-yard box.
Several Panthers defenders seemed to part like the Red Sea giving Riedesel a clear look at the goal.
“Hunter delivered a beautiful pass out there,” Putney said.
Off a bounce, Riedesel struck a perfect shot just inside the goalpost to the short side of the net where Portville keeper Alex Wenke was unable to reach it giving Chautauqua Lake a 1-0 lead.
“We were just standing there and I decided to make a run,” Riedesel said. “Hunter Harris had a beautiful throw-in. I just shot it and it went in.”
“Ian was on the sideline. … I looked at Ian and I said ‘Go score a goal,’” Putney added. “I knew he was due. I have faith in these guys and they deliver for you. Ian is a great kid and he works his butt off. What a time to get your first goal.”
“It seemed like indecision on whose throw it was or whether it was a foul,” Portville coach J.J. McIntosh said. ” … He picked it up and threw it in … I don’t know how he got it in at that angle. He made a nice move, cut in goal side and knocked it home.”
The goal seemed to energize the Thunderbirds, who actually possessed the ball for much of the remainder of the game as the Panthers desperately looked for the equalizer.
Both teams had their fair share of possession in the first half, which was marked early by an injury to Wenke, who collided with a Chautauqua Lake player in the sixth minute and was forced to leave the game for nearly 10 minutes.
The Thunderbirds’ Devin Putney had one of the best chances of the opening 40 minutes when he received a pass down the right side of the field and struck a shot that looked to be heading into the top corner of the goal before it was tipped over and out of play by Wenke — one of his five saves — in the 24th minute.
In the 28th minute, the Panthers were awarded a free kick just outside the top of the 18-yard box, but the shot was driven into a Chautauqua Lake wall of defenders.
“We connected to feet and were possessing in the attacking half, but we just couldn’t find that one finishing touch,” McIntosh said. “We couldn’t find that one pass to make it a really solid opportunity. That goes to their pressure and tenacity.”
Thunderbirds junior keeper Tate Olson was called upon to make the best of his 10 saves midway through the second half, when he deflected a Portville shot over the goal and out of play.
“Tate Olson is a true warrior. I just love him back there,” Putney said. “There have been countless times this year that I thought the ball was going in the net and out of the blue he just appears.”
Chautauqua Lake was up to the task of defending the speed of Michael Cole, the Panthers’ leading scorer with nine goals on the season. The sophomore was able to find a couple of shots on net, but they were all from the perimeter of the Thunderbirds defense.
“Mikey Cole was struggling to find space behind the defense,” McIntosh said. “We were getting wide, but we just weren’t getting up fast enough to put pressure and numbers inside the box.”
“I just love our defense. These guys work tirelessly at it,” Putney said. ” … They just bring it. They thrive on those challenges. We do one-on-one drills in practice and they take it to heart.”
Putney’s team will likely need an equally impressive performance Saturday when they take on the Red Dragons, who have outscored opponents 50-17 this fall.
“It’s been a really great experience,” Riedesel said. “I couldn’t ask to do it with anybody else other than these guys.”
NOTES: Chautauqua Lake’s girls team — the No. 5 seed — will also play in a sectional final Saturday at 11 a.m. in Frewsburg against the second-seeded Bears. … Mark Carls, the father of Portville junior Thomas Carls, coached Chautauqua Lake to its back-to-back sectional titles in 1998 and 1999. … Riedesel became just the fourth Chautauqua Lake player to score this season. Carson D’Anthony has 12 goals, Harris had three and Elias Quintero has three.
