For someone who feared the uncertainty of her future, you were handling it well. Screw it; You were happy and excited. Your high school progress was inconsistent despite the opportunities (a.k.a college options) it gave you.

When the first day of freshman college year started, the place was welcoming you. It felt like a rebirth without dying. A reset button to delete every data of the past, but didn't erase who you were.

Farming strawberries, walking home as you pass the cabbage farm of the Choi family, or getting paid to be Ms. Ji's shepherd were no longer y9ur habits as you moved to the concrete jungle. Thankfully, you were not alone; Ms. Ji's son and the son of the Choi couple were with you in the same college.

It was a new life and it was going well so far.

11:36 PM (Wednesday, Winter Season, Week 1)

Your legs pace to your rented flat as you try your best to endure the pain of your frozen ungloved fingers. Just like any other women's trousers, the one you wore had fake pockets serving no purpose.

"I really wanted to walk slowly..." talking to yourself, your words took shape under the forms of winter fog.

You grew fond of this city. Maybe a little too much to the extent, you don't take advantage of public transportation. Walking home made you feel grounded and one with nature, and you had to do it slowly.  There was something so heartwarming about the snow piles on the empty seats of the swings as you passed the mini playground at almost midnight.

However, your hands were on the verge of frostbite. You just needed to walk a kilometer to get to the flat you shared with Chanhee and Changmin, but instead your feet took you to the nearest convenience store from the sidewalk you were walking on. It lit the brightest blue 24-hour sign. As you pushed the transparent door, it nudged the shopkeeper's bell.

"Hello, welcome to Ministop. Let me know if I can help-" you let your eyelids blind you for a second, satisfied with the warmth.

Then, you realized; it might've been awkward for the cashier to see you just standing there, closing your eyes. If you think about it, it looked as if you didn't want to hear a thing he said. Maybe that’s why he never finished his sentence. You opened your eyes in an instant.

"Oh sorry, didn't mean to look like I was ignoring what you said, it's just-"

No. You knew exactly why he stopped finishing his cashier-to-customer mantra.

"Sunwoo?"

"Y/N?" He stood up from his seat.

"What are you doing at midnight? It's snowing hard! No gloves too! Just sit at the snack table, I'll get you hand warmers..." Before you get to form refusals in your head, he went to an alley (one that sold hand warmers, you assumed).

You stood still, watching his head from afar as other alleys blocked you from seeing the rest of his body. He came back to you with words kept. You had to raise your chin slightly to look up at his eyes. He avoided your eyes as he prepared the hand warmers for your use.

"How much do these cost?" He pulled your relaxed elbow to the snack table and you grunted with intentions to annoy him and you laughed.

"It's on me, hon'. Just use it." He pushed your shoulders down to make you sit.

Sunwoo stunned you frozen; it was nothing compared to the ice on your fingers. Something about him since the first time you both met in Music lecture dazzled you. He was always playful with the craft of his words to you. He would always call you 'honey', but you never knew what it meant. You always initiated eye contact, trying to search for answers behind those starry orbs.

Why you? Why 'honey'? Why would he always avoid it?

In your heart, you really wished it were the obvious answers. That the flowers of romance were blooming in his heart. Sometimes you can see when the flowers are overflowing, needing your heart for space to share. Another owner of love to share. He couldn't tend this garden of love on his own anymore.

You saw it. The times when he would laugh at your words thinking what you said was a joke. You knew that he was not listening at all. He just wanted to seem like that. He had to make sure you knew he 'cared'. But you know the difficulty was not that he did not care about what you had to say. It was the kind of care that he wanted to express; it was more than the kind of care a friend shows.

"Thank you..." you smiled at him.

He looked at you as he stood in front you for a few seconds. Just letting his eyes catch every detail of your feature. As if you were a statue sculpted by Michaelangelo. As if you were an art to be studied in a museum. He let his hands dust off the snow on your hair.

You felt loved before. Your parents showed you an unconditional, tough, and raw one. Your friends showed you a fulfilling, lively, and nonjudgmental one.

This? This was different. It was honey-like, warm, and hypnotizing.

"Sunwoo?" You stared at his face, refusing every desire and impulse to just get close to it.

"Yeah?" His voice turned breathy, nervous for your next words.

"Will you come to the party that Eric is hosting soon? Because I will." You know he would go wherever you would.

"Only because you are." He chuckled at you.

12:06 PM (Tuesday, Winter Season, Week 2)

Vacation week. Campus empty. No studies. No lectures. Winter season. No students.

What a dream...

"Oh my god! I swear, Y/N, your alarm shook the whole flat. You're making me take back my Atheism conversion if you keep doing this. I might have to worship 'He Who I Said I Believe In For The Sake Of My Christian Parents' just for the Mighty to take you back and make sure to give you good ears- OR BETTER earthquake awareness 'cause how the hell did this not wake you up?"

"Chanhee, you yapping like a mother apparently woke me up much better than my loud alarm. You should be my new alarm!" 

"Yeah, sure... No wonder your mum had to use a wok and a ladle as music instruments for your alarm ringtone performance every morning back home. She should audition to be a K-Pop idol at this point, considering how she has been doing it for 18 years!!"

"Chanhee, what are the three rules we have in this house?" Changmin joined the conversation from the kitchen, about 6 meters away from your bedroom.

"Oh my- One, no 'your mum' jokes in the morning or else we'll fight. Two, no yapping for more than a minute to ensure tranquility. Three, always remember to wake Y/N up with patience as she is younger than us by 2 years." You smiled under the blankets, since Chanhee promised that he would cook dinner for 2 weeks if he didn't follow his own rules.

"And what's four?"

"HA! Rule number four! To mention Sunwoo if you need Y/N urgently. Get your butt out of that bed, it's Eric's party or else I'll use your mum's wok to bang your head." And just like that, your eyes widened and your spine corrected its posture under a second.

"How do you execute rule number four and forget the rest right after you mention them?! You're cooking tonight!"

8:24 PM (Tuesday, Winter Season, Week 2)

There were certain types of partygoers on campus. There are the frats, the nightclubbers, and the Music Fanatics. See, the music community on campus was still small. It consisted of eleven boys and eight girls. The community was a fun idea made by Sangyeon and Jacob. One is a producer for the other who is a singer. The community's activities were therapy for you. Creating a playlist with monthly themes, listening to songs without using your ears for the first time and describing them, and so many more. You wished the community was more popular.

Thankfully, these nineteen people really like being around each other. It was the first time the eight girls (including you) found their own "besties" or "girlfriends" as they would call it nowadays. So did the eleven boys. That was why they gather around for what they call "Eric's Party" every month, as he had the biggest flat and his parents were in Los Angeles working at the time.

The "Music Fanatics" were different partygoers. They loved it in Eric's house with a lit fireplace, board games, baking sessions, horror movies, K-Pop Random Play Dance, guessing songs by the first second, and many laughs.

"Okay, but why is the girls' group chat name XG... Like what does it even stand for? eXtra-weird Girls?" Eric and Maya were deep in their endless bantering session.

"Boy, it's extraordinary girls! Kind of creative unlike someone..." she coughed with the words The Boyz between the rough breaths.

"We wanted to take X to name our group chat, but you took it first! Now, we're left with a Z!"

"You're slow, and that's Y."

"Honestly, Cocona, that's a bar."

"KEVIN, ARE YOU NOT ON MY SIDE?"

"Hey, guys! Should we play truth or dare for once?" Asked Changmin as he looked down at the bag of crisps he was eating.

You looked at him with eyes screaming "Call it off! Retreat! What are you doing?!" However, he acted like he was not all aware of the eyes on me. When you frustrated Changmin with a romance that doesn't have progress, and proceeded to come home with complaints, he would roleplay Cupid in a human form.

You recalled the last time he made you play Truth or Dare. He asked you the question with an I-Know-Nothing face. When you answered "truth," you were asked about whether or not you have a romantic attraction towards anyone. When you answered the other one, you were told to stay in the closet for 10 minutes with your (then) crush, as the others proceeded. Thankfully, at the time Sunwoo hadn't joined the Music Fanatics to see that since that Hyunjun guy didn’t reciprocate your feelings.

In order not to act dodgy, you decided to stir your coffee. Looking at the clashes of waves as you made a tea cyclone in a ceramic cup. Trying hard to calm yourself down.

"Y/N. Truth or Dare?" Sangyeon asked you.

Kevin sipped his tea with a noisy slurp, looking at you with dancing eyebrows. Chisa and Jurin widened their eyes and giggled silently, trying their best not to look dodgy in front of Sunwoo. Changmin's lips left agape. Eric laughed with his head down.

Oh....

Fine. To hell with it.

"Dare."

"Oh, I know!" Changmin chimed in.

8:56 PM (Tuesday, Winter Season, Week 2)

"I don't know why it has to be me, honestly." Sunwoo made an effort to put on a platonic face.

You sat on the carpeted closet without replying to him. He grew worried as no words left your mouth. He was afraid of every change of feelings you had, especially about him.

"Hey... I'm sorry if this thing is weird..." He lowered his head.

"Sunwoo, sit in front of me." The sternness made his body obey.

"What's up, hon'?" He brushed away the hair covering your face.

"What's stopping you, Sunwoo?" His breath stopped for a second.

You could feel within half a meter of a distance, his brain was processing vague and dismissive sentences to get out of this situation.

"Stopping me from what- Oh what I said before? Oh, I'm actually fine with you in the closet, I don't mean it that way— Sorry if you think that I was pushing you—"

"You know what I mean." He felt trapped this time.

Because he knew what you meant. However, he was caged in fear, not letting himself be vulnerable to the girl in front of him, scared that whatever he had to offer was either not enough or robbed away from him.

"I'm scared that love will always hurt, just like my last one."

You looked up, feeling your soul levitated in the gaze of his midnight eyes.

"I'm not her, am I now?"

"No. You're much better. You want me and I can feel it."

"Do you want me?" He took a breath, feeling the tension choking his neck.

"More than you know." You placed your hands on his cheeks, you leaned closer to his face. His breath fanning your face.

You let the chemistry speak, eyes on his lips then to his gaze. Leaning closer to his face until your foreheads touched, he placed his hands on your waist. Then, he nodded.

Lips clashing one other, your desire for him only grew more. It was silent as you traded mouths, but both of you heard each other loud and clear. For him, this was everything. The drive to go to lectures early, the reason he had structured a daily routine just so that he can see you as much as possible, he has you now.

"Do you believe that heaven's real?" Sunwoo let his nose and forehead rest with yours.

"Not really, no."

"Then, I'll love you 'til it hurts like hell." The final words came from Sunwoo before an alarm went off.

"I better see lipstick stains on Sunwoo once y'all out!"

A pager. Christ. This was old school by his standards. But, apparently, there was some sort of way to catch a radio signal on the damn thing? (There was a whole damn station, out here? God knew what it'd play.) Only problem was figuring out who the hell he was supposed to talk to about that.

Guin wasn't in the mood for a chase. The lady who made the coffee would know. And she'd share, for the low, low cost of a little harmless small talk about the Omega-1 and Iota-10 vets - he'd already absconded for a smoke break when that second bombshell dropped, but he'd caught the whispers during their over-long site tour; a Damn fucking Fed?) - who were, apparently, running the new circus onsite. And had some kinda history. History, even. From what he'd heard...

(Well, almost harmless. Small talk, by and large, did Guin nothing but harm. But Barb was alright.)

And, yeah, she'd happened to know just the thing for anybody sick of listening to the HVAC hiss along. Glancing at the office number scratched on the back of his receipt, Guin folded that up and into a pocket in his tac pants. "Much appreciated. Don't suppose you could - use another plant?" Plant, in scare quotes. He held up the... whatever it was, some sort of plasticky succulent that'd been in his welcome packet. To go with her shelf of the damn things behind the bar, a dusty, fakeass garden he couldn't fathom the fucking appeal of. Just made him miss real, living scenery. Fireweed on the hills, the pithy-herbal taste of spruce tips, the give of thawed muskeg under his boots. The real world. Not this concrete and glass hamster cage they'd be quartered in.

"Oh, hon. I'm all set. Maybe your friend, there?" Shaking her head with one of those apple-cheeked smiles, Barb pointed past his shoulder. Guin swiveled, already frowning - a friend? No. Just a teammate. He offered the plant again, dangling from a lifeless frond. "Want it?"

"Don't take his words seriously." You giggled kissing his covered cheek... not noticing the fire on your boyfriend eyes and the threat he made by overhauling his glove.

"Jesus fucking Christ I GET IT!" Rappa raised his hands up as you laughed, getting out of the house as Chisaki crossed his arms.

The only bad thing about the work on the yakusa was that he couldn't always afford time to be or to even get out with you, but when you needed a bit of space he sended one of his most trusted subbordinates to out along with you.

None of them were able to so it had to be Rappa this time.

He watched as you and that filth get out with a sigh, walking back to his office and just anatacipating your arrival.

This was never a good sign. You being late wasn't never a good sign. You knew about how he was pontual dammit.

The door opening mad ehis heart jump a bit but his face remained stoic as ever as listened to Rappa's voice. If he wasn't panicking then it must meant you were safe and sound...

"Here. All (your weight) delivered. You own me a match." Rappa said as Chisaki only gave him the look that could scare even fucking all Might "Geez. When it involves your girl you have the guts dont you? See ya around (Y/n)."

"Bye~" you giggled while twirling your fingers at the man, an action that made Chisaki to arch one of his eyebrows up.

"Care to explain?" He said nonchantly as you looked at him with a smile, walking towards him "You're late." He hissed.

"Ahh someone missed me~?" your hands went to hold onto his arms and he let out a confused sound when he felt the hives starting to appear... never on his relationship with you of 3 whole years.

He slapped your hand away by instinct and you laughed.

"Okay, okay! I will go to sleep then!" You walked past him giving him a wink over your shoulder "Good night my dear Overhaul~"

In one motion he grabbed your wrist harshly and twirled you around to grab on your throat and hit your back on the wall, making you cry out and whimper.

"Y-you're scaring m-me honey, please let go!" You squirmed n his grip as his gloves slowly started to dissapear as he narrowed hsi eyes down at you.

"Quit the games. You're not my (Y/N)." He growled, watching drops of tears roll down your cheeks as you sniffed.

"H-How can you say that?" You whimpered as he applied mor epressure on your throat.

"(Y/n) would refer me as Overhaul. And the way you talk and walk cant even be compared to her." He growled, narrowing his eyes at when your figurine widened your eyes before starting to cackle, a goo started to melt your face away while laughing and showing the face he wanted so desperately to punch if it wasn't important.

"So you two are that close?" The girl smiled sadically before grunting when he applied more pressure on her throat.

"Where. Is. She? I know your quirk you psyco brat, you hurted her?!" He shouted as the blonde started to cackled before looking at him dead in the eye while licking her lips as your face faded away.

"Maybe~?? Her blood is tasty though.. you should taste it." His right eye twitched before throwing her on the wall as the others came to notice the startled.

"You-!" He pointed at Rappa before overhauling him out of no where and only putting him back to normal as he lifted the poor man by the hem of his shirt out of the ground "I WARNED YOU! KEEP. AN EYE. ON MY GIRLFRIEND!"

He let go of him and run towards the secret place he had constructed. Shouting at the other to keep an eye on Toga as he ran on the corridors.

"H..Help.." he widened his eyes at the sound of your voice and shouted your name, following your voice and quickened his run and widened his eyes at seing you throw at the floor.

But as soon as he crouched down to pick you up he heard more and more of your voices... each one of them coming from different places and each version of you looked injuries and talked about how the other wasn't you.

"Twice..." he growled under his breath before slapping his hand on the ground, damaging all the replicas of you enough to fade away, even the one whose was close to him.

He got up and looked around in a panic yet collected state until he heard Twice's voice and barged a room, deadpan expression as the man shouted as Chisaki got closer and closer to him, jaw clenched as he extended one of his fingers out at the masked man.

"Tell me where is (Y/n). And I will think about it how I wont make you a second version of Rappa or transform you into a garbage can..." his fingers were mere inches away from Twice's face as the man himself shaked his hands in front of him.

"TRUST ME THEY ARE OKAY! That bitch suffered lots!" Chisaki deadpanned at the man's words before he listened to a faint call.

"K..Kai?" He widened his eyes at the closet and made a cage out of concret to prevent Twice to get out and opened the door to see you, coughing and with a serious cut on your forehead and dropping onto his arms.

"Angel.." he sighed shakily, holding you protectively on his arms as he used his quirk to repairs the damaged and cutted skin as you winced "Forgive me..."

"Aweee that's such a sweet encounter! Ugh that's gross get a FUCKING ROOM!" Chisaki looked over his shoulder with wide and threatening eyes at Bubaigara before he felt a sweet hand, one that didn't formed hives on him, touching his own.

"Leave it... is not their fault." You whispered softly as Kai looked at you like you were crazy.

"You cant actually be serious-"

"Hon you killed a teammate of his. Even is she did attacked you first they were hurt... leave it like that or else it will cost you the problem..." you mumbled on his chest as he scoffed, picking you up like bridal style and walking out of the room, touching with only one finger to free Twice as his subbordinates lead Toga to stay along with him.

"If I were you both I would kiss my girlfriend feet. Because she is sthe inly thing that kept you both alive for now..." he narrowed his eyes, Toga only blinking as Twice yelped "If you ever dare to touch her again, I will make sure that neither of you have hands anymore." He growled before walking out of the place as Toga made a thoughtful expression as Twice looked at her with confusion.

"Thinking about what Toga-chan?"

Her thoughtful expression soon transformed into a pisco one, eyes squinted as her smile almost seemed of like one of those creepy dolls.

Avro Lancaster B.VII 'NX611' (G-ASXX) by Alan Wilson Via Flickr: Lancaster 'Just Jane' is seen outside prior to one of her regular taxi-runs at the Lincolnshire Aviation Heritage Centre, East Kirkby, UK. 16-06-2014. The following full history of Lancaster NX611 was taken from the museum website:- "Just Jane" was built by Austin Motors at Longbridge near Birmingham, in April 1945. Given the serial number NX611, she was one of the first 150 B Mk VII Avro Lancasters destined as part of the RAF's Tiger Force in the Far East. However, Japan's early surrender meant these aircraft were suddenly surplus to requirements and, instead of seeing service, NX611 ended up in storage at Llandow. There she stayed until 1952. From then on, a chequered career followed. In April 1952 she was bought by the French Government. Painted midnight blue, she flew maritime patrol for the French Naval Air Arm. Ten years later, she went to Noumeau, New Caledonia, was painted white and used for air sea rescue and cartography. Then in 1964, the French presented her to the Historical Aircraft Preservation Society and flew her to her new home in Sydney where she was overhauled before being flown back to Britain. It took nine days to complete the 12,000 mile journey back to her homeland- seventy flying hours- landing at Biggin Hill on 13 May, 1965. Temporarily grounded, due to expiry of permitted flying hours, it was 1967 before NX611 flew again, but even then public appearances were brief because of prohibitive costs. She was flown to Lavenham in Suffolk and, a few years later, in 1972, was put up for auction at 'Squires Gate', Blackpool. Meanwhile, in Lincolnshire, determined to commemorate the death of their brother Chistopher who was killed on the Nuremburg Raid in March 1944, and all of the men who served in Bomber Command, Fred and Harold Panton had decided to purchase a Second World War Bomber. At one time, they had had their eyes on a Halifax which was coming up for sale, but their father told them, in no uncertain terms, they would not be permitted to keep one at his farm. The years passed, but the brothers still held on to their dream. Eventually, Fred and Harold became co-owners of their own farm. When some land came up for sale which included part of the defunct East Kirkby airfield they bought it. Some areas of concrete and a few buildings still stood on the old airfield, in a state of disrepair. They used part of the area to set up a chicken farm. However, with the idea of owning an exhibition aircraft still foremost in their in their minds, they also began to renovate the "working area" of the airfield. That included building a new hangar, where an original T2 hangar had stood there during the war years. Learning about the forthcoming auction, via an advertisement, Fred and Harold decided to try and purchase the old Lancaster. This aircraft could be the perfect monument to their brother's memory. When Fred saw NX611 for the very first time at Blackpool, she stood lonely and forlorn, waiting to be auctioned off to the highest bidder. Around her, a great Avro Lancaster NX611 at RAF Scamptoncrowd stood- some hopefully putting in bids, but most just watched- curious to see one of the country's finest types of Bomber at close range. Sadly, due to the reserve not being reached, she was withdrawn from the auction and later privately sold to the Rt Hon Lord Lilford. Fred and Harold kept in contact with her new owner and eventually, whilst she stood Gate Guardian at RAF Scampton, near Lincoln, and after one or two hiccups in the furtherance of their ambition to own her, a deal was struck with Lord Lilford's agent. In September 1983, NX611 was finally purchased by Fred and Harold and, four years later, after completing an agreed total of ten years gate guardian at RAF Scampton, she was brought to East Kirkby, courtesy of the RAF. It was sixteen years since Fred had seen her at Blackpool auction. The first moves towards restoring one of her four engines were made in 1993. Two ex RAF engineers were brought in to do the job. They began work on No3 engine. Although it had been idle for 22 years, they were confident they could bring it back to life. Accessing the spare parts was organised, the engine rotated to ensure it would still turn and the cam shaft covers removed. Both had to be replaced, although the engine cylinders were in good working order. Then the propeller was removed, stripped down and examined and - apart from having to adjust the blade settings - everything proved to be in fine order and was rebuilt. Local contractors were brought in to check the wiring and make good where necessary. That alone was a ten-day job. The engine's starter motor, magnetos, fuel booster pump and ignition harness were removed and checked, the fuel tank was pressurised and the fuel jettison system reset. When the throttle controls between the cockpit lever and the engine were uncovered, it was discovered that almost a third of the small control rods had to be replaced. However after about seven hundred man hours and at a cost of £7000 the engine was finally ready. This work was then completed for all four engines and they now at a fully operational taxiing standard.

2017: The Year of the Skyscrapers

According to the annual report from the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat (CTBUH), 2017 is the year that the most number of skyscrapers (buildings measuring over 200 meters) was completed. Overall, 144 high-rise buildings were completed around the world in a total of 28 countries. More than 75% of the 144 towers built in 2017 were in the East while 10% were in North America. Middle East projects contributed a 6.3%. Europe ranked fourth with 2.8% buildings completed being on par with Latin America’s construction of 2.8% as well. Oceania reached 1.4% of the total with Africa 0.7%. 2017 beat previous records including 2016’s 127 completions. This increased the world’s 200-meter-plus buildings to 1,319 structures, a 12.3% increase from 2016. Fifteen supertall buildings (300 meters or higher) were completed in 2017 bring the total number of supertalls worldwide to 126 from 11 in 2016. The 2017 data represents an increase of 66% in just four years.

Asia Dominates

Most of the 144 structures were built in China — a specific 53% of the 144 towers are all found in China. In fact, the Ping An Finance Center in Shenzhen made it as 2017’s highest skyscraper at 600 meters and now ranks 4th overall in the tallest building records. Another tower from the same city made it to the top 10 list as well — Hon Kwok City Center in Shenzhen at 329 meters. Three more towers from China made it to the top 10 tallest towers to be completed in 2017 — the Yuexiu Fortune Center in Wuhan at 330 meters, Yantai Shimao n°1 The Harbour in Yantai at 323 meters, and Zhuhai Saint Regis Tower in Zhuhai at 323 meters.

2017 Building Statistics

Based on the same report by CTBUH (Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat), of the total skyscrapers in the world, 38.9% of these buildings are purely tertiary towers — meaning they’re all purely service sector buildings. Housing towers account for 34% while mixed-use towers including hotels account for 27.1%. More than half (51.4%) of these structures were all designed mainly in concrete. While 47.2% were made with composite or hybrid solutions, mixed concrete and steel. 1.4% were 100% metal turns, which is pretty rare.

2018 Forecast

As indicated by the CTBUH, they project between 130 and 160 buildings of 200-meters-plus to be completed in 2018. Between 12 to 20 of these buildings are expected to be supertall structures (300-meters-plus). However, with the increasing volatility in an interconnected economy and global industry, reality can deviate from the forecast. The Enough House in Upper Kingsburg, Nova Scotia, is a monolithic gabled volume clad in Cor-Ten steel; an example of what the team at MacKay-Lyons Sweetapple Architects calls a “good generic” housing typology with a “rural industrial” aesthetic. The form recalls the prototypical child’s drawing of a house, but it is executed with a hyper-vigilant attention to craft and reverence for materials. The house—one of the newest additions to Brian MacKay-Lyons’ Shobac Farm, which is part retreat, part design test-lab—is hoisted up onto concrete plinths that serve as the foundation (tie-downs help withstand lateral wind loads) and extend beyond the perimeter of the house proper to frame an entry procession and courtyard. Inside, the house—which is used by architectural interns much of the year, but is available for summer rental—is a tasteful collection all things rustic and warm: a wood-burning stove, a ladder to a sleeping loft, wide stained-pine floorboards, exposed timber framing, and Douglas fir plywood sheathing.

The 700-square-foot Enough House, designed by Halifax, Nova Scotia–based MacKay-Lyons Sweetapple Architects, sits within a unique complex of structures, called Shobac, on the Atlantic coast of the Canadian province. It’s part of a fascinating dialogue between traditional and modern architectural forms on Brian MacKay-Lyons’ Ghost Architectural Laboratory encampments. Enough House is the 10th permanent structure added to the ensemble and its site on the entry road gives it the prominence of a gatehouse.

The gabled volume plays off an adjacent schoolhouse, a classically designed 1830s structure that MacKay-Lyons, Hon. FAIA, moved to the site just a few years ago. “The gable shape holds onto tradition as an archetype,” he says. “We’re searching for the mythic center.” But while the historic structure is strictly symmetrical in its volume and detailing, the house stems from a more kinetic impulse that informs both its fenestration and the relationship between the interior spaces and the surrounding landscape.

The simple palette is defined by 4-by-8-foot panels—Cor-Ten steel on the exterior, plywood on the interior. MacKay-Lyons refers to the aesthetic as “rural industrial” and eschews fetishizing craft or materials. The structure sits on two concrete walls that extend into the landscape, and the entrance is at the south corner, where a piece of the volume has been dramatically cut away. This negative space is balanced by floor-to-ceiling glazing at the north corner which provides expansive views of the property’s agricultural areas (and the occasional visiting sheep) from within.

The Cor-Ten sheathing is detailed as a rainscreen with rigid insulation lying outboard of the wood-framed walls. This construction allows for exposed stick framing in the primary dwelling areas—the living room on the ground level and bedroom above. The service areas—a kitchen and bathroom—receive a more “finished” look with plywood sheathing that conceals services and provides a sturdy backing for cabinetry. The exterior’s rusty metal is reprised within by a perforated Cor-Ten screen framing a bent-metal stair.

The building’s lack of eaves is a sculptural detail to be sure, but is also rooted in the place; Nova Scotia has the highest weathering rate in North America, with as many as 265 freeze/thaw cycles each year. Having an eave is begging for trouble with ice dams.

The Enough House is a smart essay in how to create a quietly remarkable structure with minimal means. “It’s not a folly,” MacKay-Lyons says. Rather, it’s meant to be a good, generic building that’s part of an ensemble—not unlike the fishing shacks that have been the mainstay of Nova Scotia’s coast for centuries. “That’s what makes the best places,” he says.
