I'm loving the Conclave trailer. Especially for its cold, distant, removed shots. People seen from far away...
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
And often from above. Sometimes it makes sense because we can assume it's a character's line of sight...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
But often not... Often it's almost like God's view of things. Watching us from above.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
So we can draw parrallels. Our MC has that godly POV sometimes, but the next we see him that way too. Watched by who?
Tumblr media
All of this contrasts betifully with some gnarly close ups
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
There were also a few shots that made me smile thinking... This is a like a Wes Anderson if it weren't funny or cute, but grave and a little paranoid
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
All these remote shots of groups too are fantastic. There's a certain quality to them. An alienation. They're all uniformed, they're a block, a hive. And yet each has its plot. A few of the god's eye view shots are like this too. A group from above. Indistinguishable to the untrained or indifferent eye.
Tumblr media
Truly beautiful imagery and it seems like Ralph is putting his entire pussy in this, as ever, and maybe shooting for an oscar?
Also, get a load of this:

I'm going to spend much of my winter in theatre, I can't wait. I also look forward to all the youtube essays explaining the meaning of all the red/white colouring of the film xD

I went and saw Conclave today, and I just have to say that it's - it's just so good. And so timely.
I'm not Catholic, I'm agnostic (cultural Christian because America, though), and yet I still loved this. I feel like it's a very intentional film, a lot of thought was put into it and a lot of work was put into shaping the characters. I'm now going to read the book after seeing this.
I won't spoil anything, but I will tell you why I think it's timely - it's about an election, and there are many parallels between the issues in the fictional papal selection and the real election Americans are facing right now. I think it has a lot of important things to say. I don't think the people who need to hear them will listen, but I love that it said them anyway.
There are three speeches in the movie that I want to print out and hang on my wall. They meant that much to me.
Anyway, I'll stop now, but I was so moved that I had to share with the void.

A very sincere lens on the line between the power the church has; and the power faith has. While being entrenched in Catholicism- it begs the audience religious or not; to consider what matters the most. All the while; pointing to what our path might look like. But for now - we are in-between. And what a glorious place to be.
Also, somehow funny and they also pulled off high drama. The hens are cluxkkkkinnnggggg!!!
This IS Queer Cinema btw.

I'm about eight minutes into Conclave (2024) and it's already one of the best films I've ever seen. if a picture is worth a thousand words, every shot of this thing is a damn ten page essay.
The unexpected camera angles: highlighting the bulging vein in a forehead here, a sunken pitted eye socket there, a tense and shadowy quarter profile. The opening shot alone is so stark and eloquent it made me gasp - a tight shot on the heavy chain across the nape of a neck. The dialogue, little of it that there is so far, is perfectly spare and direct, and forces me to hang on every word, noticing what isn't said. The detailed costumes, the set dressing, the palette -- The color grading? Hello??
And the music. When a certain intense marching of cellos started up I realized I had been holding my breath, which prompted me to check the timestamp on the movie - how long have I been hypnotized? Eight minutes???

Okay, so I don't usually do this, but here we go. I've just watched Conclave with my parents, and at first, I was a bit skeptical about it, but in the end, I remember sitting in awe, with wide eyes and just trying to gather my thoughts.
The movie is increadibly well-paced, visually appealing (I can't even describe, how beautiful and monumental some shots were; the color composition and the camera angles too), and the story itself had an interesting message to be honest, adressing some serious REAL issues of the Church. I absolutely loved, how they had some parts in italian and other languages since I'm interested in linguistics, and the sound design was out of this world. I can't forget to note the tension created by delaying just a right amount of things... The characters plus the casting were right on point, I mean, having this many amazing actors in one film, you can't go south, right?
Overall, without saying any spoilers, I would encourage everyone to at least give Conclave a go. I am (by no means) an expert, but this movie deserves to be recognized as one of the best.

Hi hello everyone should go see Conclave, especially if you're an American and you think you're incapable of feeling joy ever again. Yes, I know this is a movie about the Catholic Church and that's a hard sell, but trust me.
