When I first discovered the existence of Banmei Takahashi’s Door earlier this year (via various clips shared by fan accounts on Twitter), it was love at first sight. Luckily, while the movie currently lacks official distribution in the United States, I didn’t need to wait very long at all to see it (compared to Angel’s Egg, A Page of Madness, and Samurai Wolf, anyway) thanks to the Brooklyn Horror Film Festival, which screened it just before midnight on Friday, October 13th—basically the ideal context in which to experience its unique brand of madness.
The premise is as brilliant as it is straightforward: an ordinary housewife—already fed up with cold callers and their seemingly unlimited access to her family’s personal information—aggressively turns away an especially persistent salesman, slamming the door on his fingers after he ignores her repeated protests and attempts to force his way into her apartment. Unfortunately, this moment of instinctive panic has severe repercussions, resulting in an excruciatingly tense game of cat-and-mouse as the slighted pamphlet pusher’s vengeful wrath gradually evolves into perverse sexual obsession.
It’s a captivatingly mundane flavor of terror, twisting a familiar, relatable scenario into an inescapable nightmare. There’s nothing particularly memorable or remarkable about the central villain. He has no elaborate costume or mask, no supernatural abilities or distinguishing features; unlike Jason Voorhees, Michael Myers, and Leatherface, he doesn’t even wield a signature weapon (though he is quite handy with the absurdly convenient electric chainsaw that he scavenges from the protagonist’s collection of otherwise run-of-the-mill home appliances). This anonymity is absolutely chilling; he effortlessly blends in with the crowd—average, unassuming, invisible. Indeed, his façade of superficial “normalcy” is far more insidious than any explicit display of insanity; he taunts his prey with idle banter, seamlessly transitioning between casual flirtation and thinly veiled threats.
The director’s visual style perfectly complements the suspenseful tone of the narrative. Early scenes almost resemble a slice-of-life domestic drama, characterized by flat compositions and lighting. As the conflict escalates, however, the warm, inviting interiors slowly warp and distort, becoming cramped, claustrophobic, hostile. Foreground elements (potted plants, sculptures, windows, doorways) isolate our heroine within the frame, emphasizing her vulnerability. Voyeuristic point-of-view shots serve a similar purpose, subliminally insinuating that true “safety” is an illusion: the sinister stalker could be lurking around any shadowy corner. The increasingly maximalist cinematography culminates in the film’s most iconic sequence: a prolonged overhead angle that follows the now totally unhinged maniac as he relentlessly pursues his quarry from room to room, utterly demolishing every obstacle in his path—splintering wood, shattering glass, and reducing drywall to dust.
Yet some of the movie’s most haunting images are significantly less spectacular than this climactic set piece. Takahashi understands the inherent value of patience, frequently locking down the camera and lingering on long, uninterrupted closeups of his lead actress simply reacting to suspicious offscreen noises—the echo of footsteps in the corridor, for example, or the telltale rattle of the deadbolt being tested. Keiko Takahashi’s face is breathtakingly expressive; her turbulent emotions are palpable, a violent maelstrom of anxiety, desperation, and paralyzing fear clearly evident in every twitch of her eye, every crease in her brow, every tear staining her cheek.
How thematically appropriate that Door—a story that explores such everyday horrors as rampant commercialism, predatory marketing, and the erosion of privacy—should be at its scariest when it embraces naturalism, minimalism, and subtlety.

Harmony Woods Breakdown
I am thrilled with the overall result of this project. In my opinion, it's one of my favourite interiors I've created to date. But how did I start making this project? Let's break it down.
Initial Concept and Sketching I began with a rough sketch, more of a doodle really, experimenting with different forms and shapes to create the space. I kept a tab open with various inspirational images to fuel my creative juices and guide the design.
Adding Details Next, I started adding details to the models, such as cuts to create a wooden tile look, and openings for windows and doors. These elements added visual interest and provided resting points for the viewer's eyes as they explore the room.
Decorating the Space One of my favorite parts of the archviz design process is filling the room with décor. This helps the audience understand the room's purpose, location, and usage. I personalize the space with items from the Blender Market, which saves time and increases productivity since modeling everything from scratch would be too time-consuming.
Camera Placement I quickly added cameras around the space, selecting areas that would make great shots for the render. This is where my photographer’s eye comes into play. I experiment with different lenses, zooming in and out, and moving the camera up and down until I find the perfect frame. Using the Control B command helps focus on the frame by darkening the area outside it.
Texturing After decorating, I added textures to the space. Since this is a kitchen, I opted for a marble countertop, complemented by my favorite materials: wood and concrete. I love using these materials together because they contrast and complement each other in color, texture, and tone. Concrete is hard and cold, while wood is warm and smooth, especially when varnished. I spent time applying these materials to different parts of the model, adjusting until I was satisfied with the look.
Lighting Lighting is a crucial part of making the scene shine. It makes the materials and textures look realistic and beautiful. I used an HDRI, which is a sky texture ranging from morning to evening. I adjusted the lighting position and intensity to achieve the perfect visual appeal.
Rendering and Compositing Once happy with the overall look, I used the Cycles render engine to generate the image. I tweaked the settings, such as sample count and threshold, to speed up the rendering process. I did some compositing in Blender but preferred to finalize the image in Photoshop for more control.
Post-Processing in Photoshop Post-processing in Photoshop is my favorite part and the area I aim to improve the most. I start with the Camera Raw filter, adjusting exposure, contrast, blacks, and whites. I add color filters to set the mood, usually opting for warm, ambient summer colors with orange being my favorite.
I add layers for hue and saturation, color balance, and levels. To enhance a light source, I create a layer, pick a color from the light source, paint over it, and use the overlay blending mode. I adjust the opacity to avoid oversaturation.
Finally, I return to the Camera Raw filter for final tweaks, adding noise and a vignette for focus, increasing texture and clarity, and sharpening the scene to make it stand out.
Final Thoughts I love this scene; the lighting is great, and the colors set a welcoming, homely vibe. If I were to revisit this scene, I would incorporate render channels from Blender to enhance it further. Adding people to the scene, though tricky, could also bring it to life.

Hawaiian Airlines, Hawaii's hometown carrier since 1929, just introduced an elevated standard of leisure travel inspired by early Polynesian voyages with the unveiling of its Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner interior and new class of premium service, the LeihÅkÅ« Suites. Guests onboard Hawaiian's 787, which will enter service beginning early next year on select routes, will be immersed in cabin design elements that evoke Hawaii's rich natural world through bold textures, island-inspired sunrise and sunset lighting, and sinuous ocean and wind patterns.
"The combination of our evocative cabin design and unparalleled service will make our 787 the most relaxing and enjoyable choice for travel to and from Hawaii," said Avi Mannis, chief marketing and communications officer at Hawaiian. "We take pride in sharing our home with our guests, and the design and details of this product truly reflect what it means to be the flagship carrier of the Hawaiian Islands."
Hawaiian's 300-seat 787 features its newest premium product, LeihÅkÅ« (garland of stars). These 34 suites envelop guests in a tranquil, elegant space with fully lie-flat seating, an 18-inch in-flight entertainment screen, personal outlets, wireless charging and direct aisle access. Set in a 1-2-1 configuration with doors, the suites can offer privacy or a shared experience, with combined double seats allowing couples to fall asleep while gazing at a starlit ceiling.
In developing its LeihÅkÅ« Suite, Hawaiian became the first airline to partner with Adient Aerospace, a joint venture between the Boeing Company and Adient, a world leader in automotive seats. "It was evident from the beginning that Hawaiian Airlines is very passionate about its culture and branding, and making sure that this came through in the design language and in the passenger experience," said Adient Aerospace CEO Tony Guy. "It is so rewarding to bring this vision collaboratively to life and see it realized in the delivered product."
In Hawaiianʻs 787 Dreamliner Main Cabin, consisting of 266 Collins Aerospace Aspire seats with ergonomically contoured back and arm rests, guests will enjoy a lightweight, modern design that maximizes seat space, offers more shoulder and hip room, and features a 12-inch seatback monitor with USB-A and USB-C charging ports. Seventy-nine Extra Comfort seats offer more legroom and access to AC outlets.
Each design element of Hawaiian's 787 celebrates Polynesian navigators who sailed the Pacific by observing the stars, sun, winds, waves and wildlife. The airline worked with design consultant Teague to realize Hawaiian's vision of honoring Pacific navigation in a modern aircraft.
"Working alongside such an iconic brand in Hawaiian Airlines, we were able to create an experience that is true and authentic to what is Hawai'i," said Loreto Julian, interior design and surface textile design manager at Teague. "Along the journey, guests will be able to appreciate the culture of Hawai'i and be surprised with discoverable moments."
The 787 offers enhanced cabin air filtration, and its carbon-fiber composite airframe permits travel at a lower cabin altitude, resulting in a more comfortable flight. Guests also will notice a quiet cabin thanks to acoustic-treated engine inlets, as well as extra-large, dimmable windows, spacious overhead bins and lavatory toilets and faucets with touchless activation.
The wind and waves that have shaped the Hawaiian archipelago are expressed by curved forms throughout the entryway and cabin. Accents of deep aqua grace the carpets and privacy dividers in the LeihÅkÅ« Suites. Hawaiian's 787 also will be the most fuel efficient widebody aircraft in its fleet due to its light-weight build, innovative aerodynamics and modern General Electric GEnx engines. The 787 is significantly more fuel efficient than prior-generation, similarly sized aircraft.
Hawaiian's 787 will have a simulated cabin sky, depicting soft daylight, soothing sunrises and sunsets, or dramatic starry evening skies. Guests in LeihÅkÅ« Suites will gaze up at a luminous star compass ceiling evoking the constellations that guided Polynesian voyagers at night.
Every detail of the interior pays homage to Hawaii's pristine environment, from wall panels depicting native wood grains to the lavatory floor inspired by shimmering black volcanic sand. '��lelo Hawaiʻi (Hawaiian language) is also integrated in seat row numbers and other placards to guide guests through the cabin as they embark on their journey. Laminates and fabrics reflect the forms of native plants throughout the cabin.
