HOW LBJ TRIED TO CENSOR CIVIL RIGHTS HEROINE
Today we remember Fannie Lou Hamer, a civil-rights leader and community organiser who passed away on March 14th, 1977.
During the 1960s, Black Southerners came together to organise and resist White-supremacy and systemic violence against African-Americans. Hamer was one of the founders, and the vice-chairperson, of the Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party, a political force created to challenge the racist mainstream Mississippi Democratic Party.
In 1964, in a bid to change things, she gave powerful testimony testimony to the Democratic National Convention, explaining her hardships - and why the Mississippi Dems needed to reform.
This was televised - or it was supposed to be, until she was cut off air by an ‘urgent’ TV press conference that had been convened by President Lyndon B. Johnson. This turned out to be a complete damp squib - Johnson merely reminded reporters that it had been nine months since Kennedy’s assassination! That gave the game away: LBJ simply hadn’t wanted Hamer’s words to reach the wider nation.

Echoes of Change: Learning from the Front Lines of Social Movements
The case "Fair & Lovely Vs. Dark Is Beautiful" took me back to a pivotal chapter in my life—a period of profound learning and awakening. The themes resonated deeply with my own experiences with Professor Marshall Ganz in HKS, whose teachings on organizing and social movements have been nothing short of transformative for me.
During my time with Professor Ganz, I learned about the power of collective action and the intricate art of community organizing. His approach isn't just about rallying people—it's about weaving individual stories and struggles into a powerful narrative that demands change. This lesson was not just theoretical; it was vividly illustrated in the life of an African American man I met, who had been unjustly incarcerated during his teenage years. His story is a stark testament to the systemic injustices that plague our society.
Tumblr media
Frustrated by the relentless social stigma and the barriers he faced, he channeled his energies into creating an organization dedicated to advocating for the African American community. His work aims to dismantle the stereotypes and prejudices that underpin racial discrimination, striving to uplift those who suffer silently.
This interaction was a stark reminder of the harsh realities many face and how easily I could have been in his place under different circumstances. It instilled in me a responsibility to use my voice and resources to fight for equity and justice. Inspired by his resilience and Professor Ganz’s teachings, I’ve learned that leadership is about more than guidance—it’s about advocacy and action.
As I reflect on these experiences, I am reminded of the importance of awareness and passion in driving social change. It’s not enough to be aware; we must be willing to act, to educate others, and to stand firm in the face of adversity. We all have roles to play in shaping a more just society, and I am committed to doing my part.
Let us draw inspiration from those who have turned their struggles into a call to action and continue to push for meaningful change in every community. Together, we can challenge the status quo and create a world that reflects the values of justice, equality, and compassion.

#AffordableHousing was a hot topic globally before #covid19. Now, with the economic impact this pandemic has had, I'm saddened to think how much more of a pressing issue it will be. #Communityengagement and #impactinvesting are going to be even more crucial to revitalizing communities, ravaged by this crisis. I'm working with #developers, #impactinvestors, #lenders, #nonprofits, #communityorganizations, etc. to develop strategy for the months after we're able to move about and re-balance our lives. Please let me know how I can be of assistance to you. #housing #realestatedevelopment #equity #socialimpact #community #nonprofitleadership https://www.instagram.com/p/B-Yp3uilVAx/?igshid=g8yfashqe61s

Building Rapport
Making intentional efforts to build rapport with colleagues is a vital part of building an inclusive workspace. In this blog I’m going to discuss what rapport is, some steps we can take to build rapport, and how it will make an organization better.
What is rapport?
Rapport is a connection or relationship with someone else. It can be considered as a state of harmonious understanding with another individual or group. Building rapport is the process of developing that connection with someone else.
Sometimes rapport happens naturally. We have all had experiences where we ‘hit it off’ or ‘get on well’ with somebody else without having to try. This is often how friendships start. However, rapport can also be built and developed consciously by finding common ground, and being empathic.
Why is rapport important
Rapport is important because it allows us to connect and build relationships with others. It promotes connection with others on a personal level, and it helps establish comfortable living and working environments. Great rapport facilitates the development of emotional intelligence and interpersonal skills.
How rapport can improve your organization.
Employees will be more engaged - Gallup has done some tremendous research on engagement and in their 2015 “State of the American Manager” report, they found one of the key ways to improving engagement is to build rapport with your team members
Employees will be more receptive to your feedback - Feedback is a simple, and powerful way to motivate employees. However, the best feedback in the world will not help if they’re not willing to listen to what you have to say. That’s where taking the time to build rapport matters.
You’ll earn employees loyalty - So how do you build the rapport that creates loyalty? By making time for them and meeting with them regularly. You have to put in the effort to earn their loyalty.
Everyone will enjoy work more - When you build rapport with those you work with, you help create a positive environment. A wise person once said:
“You may find that once you start caring about people, you feel a bit happier yourself at work.”
How to build rapport
Schedule One-On-One Time With Each Team Member: Within a week of being hired into your new role, schedule time with each team member to get to know them. Ask questions and simply listen. Ask what brought them to the organization and what keeps them there. Ask what they enjoy about their work and what they would change. Ask about their strengths. Don't talk about yourself. Use this time to listen and connect with them. -
Tell Them Exactly How To Work With You: The most efficient way to enhance team performance is to quickly remove the uncertainty employees feel about how to work with you. To do that, set up one-on-one meetings and share your personal "User Manual." This cheat sheet explains how you like to communicate, circumstances when employees should come to you and so on. The conversation is fun and sets the relationship up for fast success.
Listen And Take Action: It is easy to mistakenly believe that your new employees want you to impress them with what you know and what you intend to do. The reality, however, is that they want you to be impressed by them. Set your ego aside and learn from them. Then prove that your listening is real by taking action on a few priorities they have raised. You will earn their willingness to listen to you.
Take The Lead: Reach out to the people who will be key to your success and set up a time to meet with them. Waiting for them to contact you will not lead to the results you want. When you get together, ask them some key questions, including: what is the most important thing I need to know about you, what are your goals for the coming year and what can I be doing to most help you?
Keep It '100: This expression simply means be yourself. Share something about yourself and they will share with you. Listen to others and they will listen to you. Trust your team's knowledge and they will do the same—even with those on a performance plan, give them a do-over. Shadow your employees to learn what they do and have them shadow you. And, don't forget to do fun stuff in the process.
Empower Them Right Away: From the onset, meet with your direct reports to share your vision, encourage teamwork and ask for their guidance. You also are in a trial moment where the leaders above you are more forgiving as you get your footing. So as quickly as possible, give your direct reports challenging, critical tasks with autonomy. It will get them in your corner and promptly reveal their strengths and weaknesses.
Be Curious And Authentic: Many leaders at a new company make the mistake of leading with a mindset of, "I know the answers and let's fix this." They must recognize that leading is about execution and starts with rapport and trust with the new team. Leaders succeed when they build team relationships with authenticity, curiosity and a mindset of, "tell me what you think" and "how can we get better."
