Sweden now considers sending Gripen fighters to Ukraine

Sweden is currently considering the option of providing JAS39 Gripen fighters to Ukraine as a potential donation.

This was reported by the SVT agency, citing the Swedish radio station Ekot as the source. The government is expected to issue instructions to its armed forces, possibly as early as September 14, 2023, to assess the implications of the transfer of these aircraft.

The main considerations for Sweden include understanding how this transfer can impact its defense capabilities and the schedule for the acquisition of replacement fighters for its air force. The government is particularly interested in assessing the effects on Sweden's defense capabilities and the speed at which new Gripen fighters can be acquired.

The Swedish Armed Forces are expected to present their assessment in November, after which the government will make a decision on the potential transfer of fighters to Ukraine.

Although Ukrainian pilots allegedly tested Swedish JAS39 Gripen fighters in August, Swedish authorities previously declared that there were no plans to transfer these jets to Ukraine. However, the Swedish opposition called for such a transfer on the condition that Ukraine join NATO.

Born in St. Louis to Elmer Cary Campbell, a high school chemistry teacher and assistant principal, and Elizabeth Simms Campbell, a teacher. He prepared for a career in commercial art by creating cartoons for his high school’s newspaper. He won a national contest for his cartoon titled “Armistice Day.” He won other local and national cartooning competitions such as the exhibitions in Minneapolis, a contest sponsored by the St. Louis Post Dispatch, and the Hearst Prize. He married Constance Willis (1936).

He studied at the Lewis Institute and the Art Institute of Chicago. He worked on the staff of the humor magazine Phoenix, he engaged in freelance work for the magazine College Comics, the Academy of Design, and the Art Students League in New York. He was distinguished as an artist of the Harlem Renaissance, confirmed by his work as an illustrator of the children’s book, Popo, and Fifina: Children of Haiti and his contributions to the National Urban League’s Opportunity: A Journal of Negro Life.

His artworks had appeared in The New Yorker, Life Magazine, the NAACP’s Crisis, and the satirical magazine Judge. He had written gag strips for the Saturday Evening Post. He secured long-term employment with Esquire magazine. The magazine featured his cartoons in every issue where he created the urbane. His penchant for drawing slender, scantily dressed white women appealed to white men and opened employment pathways for assignments with Playboy.

His cartoons were seen in books and popular magazines such as Cosmopolitan, Red Book, Pictorial Review, Ebony, and Colliers. He created images for The Negro Caravan. King Features Syndicate distributed his cartoons to 145 newspapers nationwide (1940-71).

Raytheon delivers first AESA radar to Boeing for B-52 modernization

Arrival of the first B-52 at the Boeing unit in San Antonio, Texas, for AESA radar installation.

Raytheon delivered the B-52's first active electronic scanning radar (AESA) to Boeing for the U.S. Air Force's B-52 Radar Modernization Program.

This new radar replaces the current radar technology of the 1960s. The B-52 will gain improved navigation and targeting capabilities in areas of greatest threat, says Michelle Styczynski, vice president of Radar Agile Solutions at Raytheon.

The new B-52 radar will allow better mapping and detection range and increase the number of targets the platform can reach simultaneously. Along with improved modes and capabilities, the AESA radar will help crews see farther, more accurately and increase situational awareness.

According to the contract, Raytheon is designing, developing and producing radar systems for the entire U.S. Air Force B-52 fleet.

Radar production is taking place in Forest, Mississippi and El Segundo, California. The remaining radars of the test phase are expected to be delivered by mid-2024.
