Russia says that confiscation of Antonov An-124 in Canada “will have consequences”
Fernando Valduga By Fernando Valduga 18/06/2023 - 19:04in Commercial, War Zones
Canada confiscated an An-124 freighter from Volga-Dnepr that was "stranded" in Toronto. For Moscow, the state confiscation of Antonov An-124 is "conical and shameless heft". And that's not all.
The Russian Foreign Ministry this week described the confiscation of an Antonov An-124 in Toronto as a "shamless cynical and heft". The government of Canada ordered this last week. Ottawa is following a "Russianphobic course" and is rewarding Ukraine "with stolen Russian property," the Russian government said angrily.
The Antonov An-124 with registration number RA-82078 was on a humanitarian flight commissioned by the Canadian government last February. The special freighter delivered antivirus agents to Toronto, writes the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. But she was not allowed to leave for her return flight.
Tumblr media
"Now it is becoming clear why," continues Moscow: it is the "long-range goal, as it now seems, to steal the single aircraft and deliver it to 'customers' in Kiev". The ministry is carefully hiding the fact that Russia went to war in Ukraine soon after the landing of An-124.
Canada ordered the confiscation of Antonov An-124, which has been detained in Toronto for 16 months, after the country imposed new sanctions on Russia in April. Volga-Dnepr was also included in the list of blocked Russian companies. The reason given was that the cargo airline supports the Russian government. She is not yet on the U.S. and European blacklist.
The confiscation must have hit Moscow in full. Because the ministry of the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Sergey Lavrov, was harsher in his statement. According to the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the expropriation is "continuing the 'tradition' of the predecessors", who "granted asylum to Nazi accomplices among the obstinate Bandera activists in Canada".
Tumblr media
Stepan Bandera was a Ukrainian right-wing extremist and leader of the militant wing of the Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists, who cooperated with the Nazis. His family and many of his followers fled to Canada. In this tradition, the "Trau regime" is now instructing "the Ukrainian authorities to wage a war against Russia until the 'last Ukrainian'," according to the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
To further express anger, on Wednesday (June 14) Russia also invited the deputy head of Canada's diplomatic mission in Moscow for a stagecoach at the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The Canadian diplomat was informed that the government's actions in Ottawa “will bring the most serious consequences for Russian-Canadian relations, which are on the verge of collapse because of the Trudeau regime”.
Ottawa wants to deliver the An-124 to Ukraine. But it's not so easy. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Canada recently announced that the asset would be administered "in accordance with federal laws". If it finally falls into the hands of the state, the government of Ukraine will find ways to "redistribute this asset to compensate victims of human rights violations, restore international peace and security or rebuild Ukraine".

The Role of Evidence in Ottawa Slip and Fall Claims
Tumblr media
Slip and fall accidents can occur unexpectedly, often leading to serious injuries and significant financial burdens. When these accidents happen, particularly due to negligence on someone else’s part, it's essential to have strong evidence to support your claim. In Ottawa, slip and fall claims are no exception. Evidence plays a crucial role in determining liability and securing fair compensation for your injuries. This blog will explore the importance of evidence in Ottawa slip and fall claims and provide guidance on what types of evidence are most effective.
Understanding Slip and Fall Claims
Slip and fall claims fall under the broader category of personal injury law. To successfully pursue a slip and fall claim in Ottawa, the injured party must demonstrate that their injury was caused by hazardous conditions that the property owner or occupier failed to address. These conditions could include wet floors, uneven surfaces, poor lighting, or other unsafe circumstances.
Types of Evidence in Slip and Fall Claims
Photographic Evidence
One of the most compelling forms of evidence in a slip and fall case is photographic evidence. Pictures of the accident scene can provide a clear depiction of the hazardous condition that led to the fall. It is crucial to take photos as soon as possible after the incident to capture the scene accurately. Make sure to photograph the specific area where the fall occurred, any visible hazards, and any warning signs or lack thereof.
Medical Records
Medical records are vital in establishing the extent of your injuries and linking them to the slip and fall accident. After a fall, seeking immediate medical attention is essential, even if you think your injuries are minor. Medical records should include diagnosis, treatment plans, and any recommendations for future care. These documents can serve as evidence of the physical and financial impact of the accident.
Witness Statements
Witnesses who saw the accident happen can provide valuable testimony to support your claim. Their statements can corroborate your account of the incident and provide an unbiased perspective. Be sure to collect contact information from any witnesses at the scene and request written statements detailing what they observed.
Incident Reports
If your slip and fall occurred in a public or commercial space, there might be an incident report filed by the property owner or manager. Obtain a copy of this report as it can provide details about the accident, including the conditions at the time of the fall and any immediate actions taken by the property owner.
Expert Testimony
In some cases, expert testimony may be necessary to establish liability. Experts such as engineers, safety inspectors, or medical professionals can offer insights into the hazardous conditions that caused the fall and the impact of the injuries sustained. Their professional opinions can strengthen your claim and provide a comprehensive understanding of the incident.
Preserving Evidence
Preserving evidence is crucial in a slip and fall claim. Here are some tips to ensure that your evidence remains intact:
Act Quickly: Gather and document evidence as soon as possible after the accident.
Secure Witness Information: Collect contact details and statements from witnesses immediately.
Keep Records: Maintain all medical records, bills, and correspondence related to your injury.
Avoid Alterations: Do not alter or repair the accident scene before documenting it thoroughly.
The Legal Process
Once you have gathered the necessary evidence, it is essential to consult with an experienced slip and fall lawyer in Ottawa. Your lawyer will evaluate the evidence, advise you on the strength of your case, and guide you through the legal process. They will also help negotiate with insurance companies and represent you in court if necessary. For More Information Visit here
Conclusion
In Ottawa slip and fall claims, evidence is the cornerstone of a successful case. From photographic proof to medical records and witness statements, each piece of evidence contributes to building a compelling argument for your claim. By acting quickly and preserving all relevant information, you can enhance your chances of receiving fair compensation for your injuries. Remember, consulting with a knowledgeable slip and fall lawyer can provide you with the expertise and support needed to navigate the complexities of your case effectively.

VANCOUVER, CANADA, 21 - 24 June 2024
On 21st June, we took buses and a train to the Broadway/Commercial area of Vancouver to attend the festival which was being put on for National Indigenous Day. We were able to see some wonderful craft work on many stalls which had been created using traditional skills. Many women were wearing very attractive traditional “ribbon skirts” which are skirts made from bands of colourful ribbon sewn together. We were introduced to the local MP who had flown in from Ottawa to attend the festival. My relative P knew the MP as they worked together some years ago when the MP was a MLA ( member of the legislature for the Province of British Columbia). There was a music programme through the afternoon. We were fortunate to find some shade to listen to the entertainment:
Tumblr media
We returned to the hotel for a short time before making our way by bus and train again to the Waterfront. We then took the seabus across to the area of Vancouver called the North Shore. We went to visit the Friday evening market. This took place in and around the old shipyards. There were a huge number of stalls selling all types of artisan crafts as well as food trucks producing a wide range of foods.
Tumblr media
There was a huge area devoted to a Splash play area for children where they were having such fun:
Tumblr media
We walked down the pier to take in the view of Vancouver downtown. We were able to find a great table for dinner with a super view across the water. (The building with white sails is the cruise terminal).
Tumblr media
Dinner was very noisy as there was a TV on showing a key ice hockey match (6th match in a series of 7 in the Stanley Cup between the Edmonton Oilers and the Florida Panthers). There was an ecstatic atmosphere when the Canadian team won as it meant each team had won three matches. On our way back to the seabus, we passed this interesting photograph on a brick wall of the shipyard workers many years ago:
Tumblr media
On 22 June, we went to the science park area of the city to watch some of the Dragon Boat races in the Dragon Boat Festival. This was a huge event with teams from all over Canada and USA. There were a huge number of stalls showcasing services as well as artisan crafts with a focus on Chinese culture. There was a traditional parade of the Chinese dragon:
Tumblr media
We enjoyed watching many races. Here was the view of the boats speeding towards us:
Tumblr media
The rowers looked very tired after a race but the boats looked very picturesque in the water as the referee confirmed the race result:
Tumblr media
On 23 June, it was the National Day of Prayer for the Indigenous Peoples of Canada. We attended the morning service at Christ Church Cathedral in downtown Vancouver. Prior to the service we attended an hour’s lecture on the history of the renovation of the cathedral. It was built at the start of the 20th Century and has been extended, adapted and repaired several times. The cathedral had added a modern bell tower which was beautiful:
Tumblr media
We had lunch in the Art Gallery Restaurant and we were able to catch some lovely jazz music from youth jazz musicians playing in Robson Square.
On 24 June we took the bus again to Stanley Park. This time we walked around the waterfront towards the Lion’s Gate Bridge:
Tumblr media
We watched a heron on the water’s edge for some time. We then walked through some of the forest area to the Pavilion for lunch.
After returning to the hotel we prepared for the evening’s final match in the Ice Hockey’s Stanley Cup. Sadly for P the Edmonton Oilers were beaten by the Florida Panthers in the 7th decider match.

Art Studio 1 Lecture and 24th Biennale Gallery visit (Chau Chak Wing Museum) (22.3.24)
Lecture: Artist-run Spaces (by Alex Gawronski)
Artist-run Spaces (or ARIs - Artist-run Initiatives) are:
Spaces directed and organised by artists (collectives, studios, shows/exhibitions, festivals, workshops, etc.).
Dedicated to showcasing experimental contemporary art.
Usually running on a 'not-for-profit' basis (although art may occasionally be sold).
An international phenomenon (found everywhere)
Below are some examples (Australia):
Firstdraft (Sydney, Australia)
107 Projects (Sydney, Australia)
Airspace Projects (Sydney, Australia)
Gertrude (Melbourne, Australia)
Blindside (Melbourne, Australia)
Outer Space (Brisbane, Australia)
Sawtooth ARI (Launceston, Australia)
FeltSpace (Adelaide, Australia)
Watch This Space Gallery (Alice Springs, Australia)
Below are some examples (international):
Studio 1.1. (London, England) and its other galleries: Studio 1.2. (Haarlem, Netherlands), Studio 1.3. (Poços de Caldas, Brazil) and Studio 1.4. (Susak, Croatia)
PrintSpace (Brooklyn, US)
Transmission Gallery (Glasgow, Scotland)
VideoArt Center Tokyo (Tokyo, Japan)
EST Art Foundation (Leiden, Netherlands)
M1 Singapore Fringe Festival (Singapore)
OpenArt (Örebro, Sweden)
SPAO Photographic Arts Centre (Ottawa, Canada)
Mothermother (Auckland, New Zealand)
Artist-run Spaces run on different models in funding and exhibitions.
Funding:
Government funded (ie. The Australia Council etc. Other State funding bodies).
Self-funding as a co-op (members of the directorship pool their own financial resources to pay for gallery rent and exhibition costs).
Exhibitor funded (gallery is paid for on a not-for-profit basis, by a rental fee paid by exhibiting artists.
Auctions and Fundraisers organized by ARI directors. A combination of the above.
Exhibition models:
Typically Government funded Als must, as a part of their agreement, accept outside proposals. That means the gallery directorship collectively decide which proposals they want to exhibit.
Self-funded co-ops can choose to accept proposals, but the onus will be determined by the co-operative.
Exhibitor-funded ARI models may accept proposals or may curate 'in-house' (ie. The directorship) actively curate the exhibition program without accepting proposals. Some of these are 'spaces for hire. That means they accept outside proposals for the primary purpose of covering the venue rent. They are often expensive and have less credibility within the art world (ALTHOUGH if you can afford it, they can be useful places to experiment if you're starting out).
There are many benefits to founding, directing or being involved in an Artist-run Space - including but not limited to:
Greater creative freedom in both the works you like to exhibit and the artists you'd like to work with
Greater freedom from limitations within institutional/commercial galleries
While another means of income may be needed, you don't have to deal with the pressure of selling your work
Collaboration opportunities, which can help you to form personal and professional connections
Gallery visit: 24th Sydney Biennale (Chau Chak Wing)
Citra Sasmita's Timur Merah Project X: Bedtime Story (2023, acrylic on traditional Kamasan canvas and oak dowels) and Timur Merah Project IV: Tales of Nowhere (2020, acrylic on traditional Kamasan canvas and oak dowels)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Description: "Citra Sasmita began researching patriarchal roots of modern Bali by looking to the literary and artistic canon of Indonesia, which broadly narrates male heroism and depicts women as romantic decorations. Through her Timur Merah Project, Sasmita creates counter-narratives that depict women as powerful and resistant actors who push back against a male gaze informed by colonial ideology. Following the fall of the last Balinese kingdom in 1908, the Dutch administration introduced the policy of Baliseering. A strategy of cultural diplomacy intended to establish an 'authentic' Bali, the policy obliged the Balinese community to carry out their cultural practices under Dutch supervision. Javanese nationalists argued that the policy kept Bali as a living museum' that appealed to colonial aesthetics of the noble and exotic while obliterating any Balinese self-determination. Balinese women, who for centuries were trafficked by the Dutch as particularly beautiful slaves, were often depicted in naturalistic portraits by colonial painters. In Timur Merah Project X: Bedtime Story and Timur Merah Project IV: Tales of Nowhere, Sasmita uses traditional Kamasan painting to reclaim the female figure as an active de-colonial agent challenging the exotic aesthetic heritage of Baliseering."
Cho Ka Fai's Exodus (2024, short film (18 mins 52 secs))
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Description: "Gathered around the campfire one hot Javanese night in the 1930s, a contingent of Dutch soldiers drunkenly sang and danced while a group of Indonesian farmers watched from afar, mimicking the men's strange, rhythmic movements. And so, Dolalak was born. Something of a cultural constellation, Dolalak performers cosplay in Dutch military regalia for trance-like performances of traditional Javanese dance, melodic Islamic poems and songs of ancestral spirits. Popular among young Indonesian TikTok influencers who dance Dolalak to the tunes of Indonesian pop music (Dangdut Koplo), the ritual sits within a deeply layered history. The same rich source resulted in an Indonesian band being hailed as the greatest live act in mid-century Europe some 20 years after the development of Dolalak. Following the Dutch failure to re-invade Indonesia after the Second World War, a number of Dutch-speaking Indonesian musicians, primarily from the Maluku Islands, were exiled to the Netherlands. In the same way that Dolalak rose from a colonial clash of cultures, Indo-Rock emerged in the 1950s/1960s when these musicians began to meld Western, Indonesian and Kroncong music, a specific genre in Indonesia played on Portuguese-introduced instruments. This fusion gave rise to leading bands like the Tielman Brothers, who reached stardom as icons of Dutch and West German rock 'n' roll. In Exodus, the Dewi Arum Girls (TikTok stars) dance Dolalak to a remix of the Tielman Brothers, meditating on the colonial resonances that linger. They dance like spirits, in the reverberations of Dolalak, Indo-Rock and contemporary digital culture."
Diane Burns' Alphabet City Serenade (1988, short film (1 min 57 secs))
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Description: "Chemehuevi and Anishinaabe poet Diane Burns walks the streets of New York's Lower East Side (Loisaida colloquially) reciting her poem Alphabet City Serenade in this powerful footage. An indictment of the gentrification of Loisaida and the treatment of First Nations Americans, Alphabet City Serenade paints the cracked windows and littered streets of Loisaida with a vivid and loving brush. The serenade also threads Burns into the fabric of the cityscape, with its crumbling tenements and narrow stretches of blue sky. A prolific personality and artist, Burns read her work at Bowery Poetry Club, the Nuyorican Poets Cafe, and the Poetry Project at St. Mark's Church as well as joining the likes of writers Allen Ginsberg, Joy Harjo, and Pedro Pietri in Nicaragua for the Ruben Dario Poetry Festival. Yet by the late 1980s, Loisaida, a counter-culture hub for creative, immigrant, and queer circles, was at risk of losing itself to rising rents, drugs, and the HIV epidemic. Before long, the community which had sustained Burns would dissipate, coming together again in 2006 on the event of her death. Over a career defined by an immutable spirit, Alphabet City Serenade captures the writer's sardonic, yet penetrating, insight..."
Mangala Bai Maravi's Baiga Godna Indian Tribe (2024, ink on paper)
Tumblr media
Description: "The women of the Baiga community in central India (primarily in the state of Madhya Pradesh) begin receiving tattoos from as young as age nine, starting with their forehead before covering their back, legs and chest. The designs, known as Godna, are a record of life and culture, and are known to hold healing properties when applied correctly. Among some of the earliest communities in South Asia, in recent times the Baiga people have been displaced by deforestation and government policy. In turn, the tradition of Godna is fading because (unlike jewellery or written records) the history that is encapsulated in these tattoos disappears with those who wear them. Mangala Bai Maravi, one of the few remaining Badnin (women tattoo artists) in her community, has committed her life to preserving and sharing this tradition. Documenting the symbols and stories of her people, across not only bodies but also canvas and paper, Maravi's practice can be understood as an act of cultural preservation and healing."

Applying for a New Boat Registration in Ontario
If you happen to live in Ontario, and you have dreams of owning a boat, you already know that you are in the right place. Home to more than a quarter of a million freshwater lakes, it would be unfair to describe this province as anything less than a boater’s paradise. Seeing as how you could theoretically launch your boat on a different lake every day, the opportunities rightly do feel endless. And, of course, there is only one way to maximize your enjoyment of Ontario’s natural offerings, and that is by purchasing your boat. Once you have explored the various makes and models and have narrowed in on the boat for you, you can then locate a seller and negotiate a fair price. Once the keys to your boat are in your hands, and you have it hitched up to your motor vehicle, you will likely be ready to get it in the water. First, though, you may need to attend to some paperwork with Transport Canada, and this often means applying for a boat registration in Ontario. At the National Vessel Registry Center, we can make this process a breeze.
As you begin your maritime era, you will want to become acquainted with Transport Canada, if you have not already done so. As the nation’s primary transportation agency for the infrastructure of our waterways, Transport Canada issues pleasure craft licenses (PCLs), pleasure craft operator cards (PCOCs), and vessel registrations to boat owners all over the country. Headquartered in Ottawa with thousands of employees, this agency plays an important role in preserving and protecting our waters. As a responsible boat owner, you will have an obligation to stay current on all of your Transport Canada paperwork, and by working with a private service such as ours, you can take care of it all online.
What is a Boat Registration in Ontario? You may find yourself wondering, what is a boat registration and do I need one? Well, as the name would suggest, a vessel registration enters your vessel into Transport Canada’s national registry. This mode of documentation is a requirement when your boat is used for commercial means, or if it is financed with a bank loan or marine mortgage. You will also want to register your vessel if you are planning to travel internationally under the Canadian flag. Once registered, your boat will have an official name of your choosing that is unique.
To register your vessel online, you can use our web version of Form 1 – Application for Vessel Registration, and our Form 3 – Statement of Qualification for Vessel Registration. You can also upload your tonnage measurements and photographs of all four sides of your boat using our secure portal.
Work with Us and Save Time If you need to register your vessel or apply for a PCL, we have all the web forms you need. To see for yourself, take a few minutes to explore our website, or visit our useful Frequently Asked Questions page.

Importance of Food Product Photography for Your Restaurant Business Success
What is commercial food photography, and how does it differ from other type’s photography? In a word, it's a genre of life photography that focuses on producing visually appealing food photographs. Menus, advertising, cookbooks, packaging, websites, and the like all employ this style of commercial food photography. All restaurants would benefit from recognizing the value of good food photography and incorporating it into their restaurant psychology strategy. So, what makes you want to take pictures of food?
It creates a great first impression.
You've heard it said that first impressions are irreversible. And you don't want to be trapped with a bad name, so make a good first impression on the internet. It all starts with your website's graphics, which should be able to speak for themselves. They'll remember your restaurant if their initial encounter with you is through your high-quality, mouth-watering images.
It boosts sales.
A good photograph can help you sell a product. You may use photos to promote your meals in a variety of ways. You can opt to showcase a professional photo of each meal, or you can use amazing images to emphasize your most profitable and popular items. Customers will be more likely to order them rather than the others because the visual will catch their attention.
It establishes credibility and confidence.
When we consider the relevance of food photography in today's world, the term "what you see is what you get" comes to mind. Customers prefer to know what they'll get. Surprises are fun, but they're not always pleasant when it comes to eating.
It helps to establish a brand and conveys a story.
As a restaurant owner, you have the power to shape how the rest of the world views your establishment. You have complete power over what you exhibit and how you present yourself to the world. Professional food photography can assist you in developing a brand that stands out and determines the personality of your business.
It's a one-stop-shop for all of your marketing requirements.
An initial expenditure in a professional food photo session by a restaurant photographer is required. However, here's why food photography is so important: the images you'll take will come in handy in a variety of situations. Adding them to your website and menu is the most immediate and profitable use.
It simplifies the customer's decision.
It's far more difficult to choose between three dishes when you have no idea how many of them appear. Make it easier for clients to choose by including photographs of people who are hungry for each menu item. The only worry now is that they won't be able to choose because everything looks so good, but that shouldn't be a problem for you.
So, if you want the best and professional Commercial Food Photography in Montreal or
Food and Product Photography in Ottawa, Photolux Commercial Studio is pleased to welcome you. Please contact us on 613.227.5209 or email us at [email protected]!!

William Notman the pioneering Scottish photographer was born on in Paisley March 8th 1826.
WIlliam Notman photographed upper-class men and women in rich surroundings, but also too pictures of ordinary people, nature and the construction of Montreal's Victoria Bridge.
Notman was born and raised in Paisley where he received a decent education, which included lessons in painting and drawing.. After leaving school worked in a family firm but when it ran into financial difficulties  Notman hoped to pursue a career as a professional artist. His hopes were thwarted by the expectation that he would join his father’s cloth design and manufacturing business. As it turned out, however, during a severe economic downturn, Notman fabricated client orders in order to pay down mounting debts. Fraud charges were then laid, and in 1856 he fled Glasgow for Montréal in part so that responsibility for the fraud could be laid on him and the rest of the family could avoid prosecution.
An amateur photographer, he quickly established a flourishing professional photography studio on Bleury Street,kn the city, a location close to Montreal's central commercial district, where he attracted clients who were members of the political and business elite.
His techniques predated Photoshop by about a century, but just because we can achieve in a few clicks what would have taken William Notman days of painstaking photography, painting, and literal cutting and pasting, should make his legacy more impressive, not less.
In 1858, he was commissioned by the Grand Trunk Railway to photograph the construction of Montréal's remarkable Victoria Bridge. Notman gave the Prince of Wales a maple box containing an image he had taken of the construction of the bridge as well as scenes from eastern and western Canada, which were apparently eventually shown to great acclaim to Queen Victoria.
You would imagine his studio would have been a small business, due to the era, but no, Notman's staff was some 55 strong in the 1870s) and included apprentice photographers.
He established 14 branch studios in eastern Canada and the United States, all managed by his trainees. Notman won many medals for his work in exhibitions at home and abroad. To meet the demand for landscapes and other views, he sent his photographers across Canada, recording the construction of the Canadian Pacific Railway, the rise of the western cities, the life of the plains and coastal Aboriginal peoples, the lumber trade of the Ottawa Valley, East Coast fishing, rural activities and the bustle of the cities.
Notman also became famous for the composite photographs of the snowshoe and curling clubs produced by his studio. These large creations were made up of 300 or more individual photographs, cut out and pasted onto a painted background, the first cut and pasting perhaps!?
Always community minded, Notman was involved in art associations, church societies, sports clubs and other Montréal organizations. He was also a backer of the Windsor Hotel and copartner in large holdings in Longueuil, where he had a summer home. Of his seven children, all three boys became photographers. William McFarlane Notman, his eldest son, took over the business at his death. The Notman collection, containing over 400,000 photographs, plus office records and family correspondence, forms part of the collections of the Notman Photographic Archives housed in the McCord Museum of McGill University.
When William Notman died suddenly in November 1891 after a short bout of pneumonia, management of the studio Wm Notman & Son was left to his son William McFarlane Notman, an experienced photographer in his own right
In 1957, the Notman Collection was purchased by McGill University. The 200,000 negatives, 43 Index Books, 200 Picture Books and assorted memorabilia were transferred to the McCord Museum of Canadian History.

I’ve given myself a summer photography project. I’m going to photograph the 45 locks (concentrated into 23 lockstations) along the Rideau Canal.
For those not up to speed on their Upper Canadian history, the Rideau Canal was built in response to the War of 1812 between the British (Canada was still a colony at this point) and the United States, much of which was concentrated along the border formed by the lower Great Lakes and especially the St Lawrence River. The 202 kilometre long canal opened in 1832 and allowed maritime shipments to avoid the exposed stretch of river from Kingston to Montreal by coming north to Ottawa, and then down the Ottawa River to Montreal. It never saw military use, but became the main commercial thoroughfare through eastern Canada prior to the opening of the St Lawrence Seaway. Today it is used by pleasure boaters (and pleasure skaters in winter) and the locks are still run by hand, using the original equipment, by lockmasters posted along the route. Many of the fortified lockmaster’s houses remain as well. You can see one on top of the hill in the third picture.
These pictures are of Chaffey’s Lock (#37) and Davis Lock (#38). I also went to Jones Falls Locks (#39 through #42), but they are undergoing extensive restoration work, so I’ll have to go back once that is complete.
Conveniently, the little community around Davis Lock also had a one-room schoolhouse, so that’s two pet projects for the price of one!
