She suffers from a total LACK of self-preservation ... rarely does she think of her own health/safety when someone else's is endangered 😤

𝐁𝐚𝐫𝐚𝐦 is NOT a fan of crowds ... too many unpredictable people in close proximity to her person

𝐁𝐚𝐫𝐚𝐦 has NO qualms about using torture to get intel out of people (her tactics can border on “sadistic” depending on the prisoner being interrogated 🗡); after interrogating 𝐌𝐚𝐧𝐬𝐨𝐤 she brutality killed him

Her favourite colour is “teal”, most of her off-duty outfits have the colour incorporated in some fashion

LEE HANSOL (이 한솔 ) — THE LIEUTENANT COMMANDER

Your closest and oldest friend in the Samjogo, as well as your faithful lieutenant. Honourable beyond compare and steadfast in any situation, you can trust him to have your back at all times. Although he is of noble birth, Hansol has never once looked down on you or your origins.

It is said that among every generation, only a handful are talented enough to become warriors of great renown, and even fewer among them are those with the potential to become legends whose stories endure for generations. Already bestowed with a title for his outstanding contributions in the Geurim rebellions, tales of Lee Hansol — the Divine Spear that Pierces the Heavens — will surely be passed down in the history books of the Haeian Empire.

Yet, instead of walking in his father's footsteps to become one of the Five Great Generals, Hansol has followed you to the Samjogo — the personal vanguard of the Crown — content to remain under you as your lieutenant.

APPEARANCE

Tall, broad shouldered and well muscled, Hansol has brown hair that is usually tied up in a high ponytail with a crimson ribbon and honest brown eyes. A red headband keeps his hair out of his eyes.

He is often seen with a confident and polite smile that shows off the dimple in his left cheek, his skin tanned honey-brown from hours of martial training under the sun. You usually see him in his black and crimson Samjogo's uniform, but he prefers to wear simple pine-green robes when not on duty.

High Leader (assuming they are So) is such an anime protagonist. Their home is destroyed, their mother is killed, and their best friend is taken from them at a young age. They vow to get revenge and eradicate the people who took everything from them. They go on to accomplish impossible feats and are well on their way to becoming one of the most important people in the setting. All the while from their perspective, they're saving their homeland from invaders.

While Commander is out there getting dunked on by Hae and chilling with their Samjogo bros, High Leader is living the shonen life. How can we not join such a badass?

the high leader has clearly already gone through the character development arc and has now reached the power up phase... the question is whether the commander will catch up ;)

Kind of a long ramble spoiler for the last chapter but I have to talk about it to someone and give you your accolades

So when I start a new IF, I always make up OCs with different personalities because I don't like being personally involved in the IFs I read and also for more diverse choices but this one hits different.

First of all. The objectification of the clear eyes , the fact that an RO fucking ATE the gijeok, the micro (and macro) aggressions (especially the fucking guy at the pleasure house who made me paranoid during the whole chapter because I thought he was going to ambush us on the way back with Wooyoung being hurt if you see this you're on the list buddy)

You think it doesn't hit until The Empress asks the question and man.

The way I was lowkey ashamed of myself for saying I didn't know. And then I felt frustrated because how do you expect me to pick a side author ?? 😭😭😭

And when I tried to be The loyal commander as usual I had every little aggression, every little insult, every little objectification coming back like flashback especially the scene at the start with all the eyes and oathbounds gathered 💀💀

Now, don't get me wrong, I love The Empress, the Samjogo (Hansol my twin, my ride or die, my brother from another mother 🥹🥹), Wooyoung, Ahn, EVEN THAT BASTARD KWOK (raon you weird for that but you get a pass just this time 👁️👁️) but I just hate Hae because of what it represents, I just don't see how I can go to war for my oppressors against my people. It's kinda weird you know ??And I also don't want my people to die being gaslighted into war by some modern (not really) Jesus ykwim ???

Because war with Hae or not it won't bring back grandpa who was transformed into a gas station dick pill or little cousin who became a Vicks balm for some old lady with one foot who's already in the grave you see ????

And no matter how much I hate that shithead Jeong Taehoon (whatever his name is) HE WAS OCCASIONALLY COOKING SOMETHING 🗣️🗣️🗣️ 🔥🔥🔥

Having your strong ass (and easily disposable) slave that owes you life as your commander is a Battleship type move (and you realize that the RO presentation wasn't sugarcoating it💀 At this point I rather not entirely trust her to defend my interests 💀). I love the "no choice is right" stuff.

i'm glad that you felt that conflict!! this is only the beginning of a tumultous war and power struggle - and for the commander it'll be a matter of torn loyalties... you can't support either side without breaking some relationships, losing some people and hurting those you love!!

So, since it's heavily implied (at least in past asks) that ???? knew MC from their past, have they been able to keep tabs on MC and generally know what they've been up to/their current position in the Samjogo, or are they completely in the dark?

once the mc entered the palace, they more or less completely disappeared from the face of the earth. even after becoming the commander of the samjogo, they are more often referred to as the crow commander or the emperor/empress' lapdog, which would make it hard for anyone on the other side of the mountains to find them or keep tabs on them :)

hi! i just finished reading the demo and can i just say I'm already so in love with hansol! just utterly smitten with that man! i don't think i can ever romance any of the other ros, he's just so soft and sweet and gentle and kind 🥺

also, why do i have to choose sides can't we all just get along aren't you guys tired of going to war 😭

but seriously, this wip is sooo good! it's one of my favorites!

oh and i have a couple questions if you don't mind:

1) what does the other samjogo think of the shan, especially considering that their commander is a shan? do they also think that all of them are barbaric/uncivilized/devils, with the exception of the commander? are they more sympathetic towards the shan slaves and think that they shouldn't be treated as less than human? and what is gunwoo's opinion of them?

2) i don't know if you're taking suggestions so please feel free to ignore this one if you aren't but my suggestion is to add a blushing option when hansol brushes the hair away from mc's face. i just think it's funny to see them both being awkward with each other lol

but as it is with most wars - they happen because people simply do not get along. as long as people exist, war will follow in their footsteps. it's sad, but it's the truth :")

as for your questions, the samjogo have varying views on their commander. some do think that all shan, with the exception of their commander, are still barbarians or devils, while others have become slightly more sympathetic towards the plight of the shan slaves. to many of them, ownership of slaves is simply a way of life, and this ingrained mindset will not be changed so easily. still, the presence of the commander has definitely started a shift in the way some of them think.

I'd love snippets about the other members of the Samjogo! They all seem to be diverse and distinct characters. Also if you're up to it, maybe interactive stories of the Commander's past adventures and missions 🙏🥺 I would love to play through the assassination attempt and save Yongsun

they're a chaotic bunch of idiots 🤣 i can't wait for all of you to meet more of them in the story!! but yes, i will consider writing interactive stories of the commander's past missions, including the story of the crimson zither and the commander's time fighting the eastern sea pirates!!

Answering to this!:

Well, in the case of my MC, it's pretty simple.

I'm playing a very honorable MC who has an extreme amount of loyalty towards Yongsun and, by extension, towards their country. My MC wouldn't be needlessly cruel towards the Shan and he'll certainly help them, but not "because they are Shan", and rather simply "because they are people in need". At this point, his family is in Hae. His master is his family, his comrades in arms are his family, his best friend (who is also a comrade in arms) is his family, he has a crush on a person in Hae too (Wooyoung). If we think about it that way, the Shan are only his origins, sure, but not what makes him who he is at this point. He IS home, and he'll protect his home if the need arises. And he'll do so fiercely. Especially considering he actually LOST his home once already. Never again. That's why there are no second thoughts at all in this decision! And that's also why ultimately in that choice I picked the nation over the ruler - he'll remain loyal to his new home as a whole, not only specifically to the head of the family.

it's so sweet how your mc has truly found a new home in hae! i'm sure the samjogo and hansol (plus wooyoung and yongsun) have all contributed to making the commander feel like they have a place among them :(

Hey wait, the gears in my brain are slowly turning...

How well know are MCs exploits during the rebellion? Are they quite well known or are they relegated to third place stage while the focus of what is widely known mostly on the others who were there?

Basically, does ???? Know of us? Suspect us? Or just thinks the commander is some kind of random slave who got elevated?

mc helping to end the geurim rebellions is well known, but the details of how it happened weren't made known to the general populace since they were still a shan slave at the time. the nobles didn't want too much word getting out about how much a shan slave contributed to the war. hence, much of what is known is mostly gossip or rumours

How would the Commander react if they ever met the Marshall from I, The Forgotten One? I think the Commander could see part of themselves in the Marshall. That they would have become like the Marshall, if they didn't have their support network in the rest of the Samjogo and their duty to serve and guard the Emperor/Empress.

How would the rest of the cast and RO's react if they ever met the Marshall or saw them talking with Samjogo Commander?

this is actually a pretty interesting question! i do think that the commander would have ended up more like the marshall if it weren't for two people: yongsun and hansol. part of the reason why mc would even have any attachments to hae in the first place is because of the samjogo that they live side by side with, and the emperor/empress who saved their life. but that isn't to say that mc doesn't have their own trauma from the war, even though it isn't quite viscerally shown yet. but they've learned to force it down in order to survive and go about their day to day life.

I swear if the commander isn’t Shan I’m 10/10 sure that the ROs would have MUCH more competition. Like I’m pretty sure the reason why everyone is giving the commander a stink eye instead of bedroom ones is because their Shan. Like imagine if they aren’t Shan, they’d be the Casanova of Hae. Wives would elope, husbands be cheating, girlfriends be stolen and boyfriends would be screaming and crying to the commander for stealing their girlfriend and not them.

the commander has the rizz like. you think hansol is hot? have you seen his commander??? the samjogo would be the host club of the imperial palace, veritable eye candy for all to feast on

THE COMMANDER

There is only one word that can be used to describe the Commander of the Samjogo — strange. From their position in the Imperial Court of Hae to their loyalty to the Hae Emperor, both the people of Hae and Shan whisper among themselves about the Commander in hushed voices. “Strange!” Whether the Commander is aware of these rumours or not, they continue to walk with their head held high — they have more important things to do than listen to idle gossip of the masses.

APPEARANCE

Like most of the Shan people, what sets the Commander apart from the Hae is this — their silver eyes, the colour of hardened steel. They are most often seen wearing the crimson and black uniform of the Samjogo, with the insignia of a three legged crow carrying the sun sewn onto their sleeves, and their sword tied to their hip. If one looks a little closer, they might see the remnants of the Commander’s traditional accessories — small silver hoops in their ears, and a leather cord around their neck, bearing a broken pebble at the end.

I had a thought where the commander, when in need of some introspection, has chats with Hoseok, assuming when mc is alone Hoseok seeks them out as well. Like the commander tries to work through things by talking to themself through Hoseok, but now Hoseok is the most informed Samjogo member about everything that troubles MC adkfnjfhg

Hoseok attacking people who were mean to the commander, crowing at 5 am at their window somehow etc

Also the mc confessing to hoseok how they feel about the ro´s and Hoseok now eyes the ro´s threathingly as a shovel talk of some kind (protecting the hooman)

that does happen sometimes!! you'll see more of these scenes in the future, and no matter your relationship with hoseok, our dear little chicken mascot will always be there for you

Pengu ! There’s this really cool archery style that I think you should know!!! It’s called the Jarmakee and it’s a style developed by the mongols for their horseback archery !!

The Jamarkee style looks very weird where basically the archer would put their bow BEHIND their head and tilted sideways. This means that the bow doesn’t obscure the archer’s face and it would make it harder for the archer to sight along the bow.

The weirdest/coolest thing about it is that despite sounding really impractical and almost stupid, it’s actually a ridiculously effective style (In some cases this style is even better than the sideway shot a lot of media tends to use too!!). The jarmakee makes for a very effective style for defending walls and hunting animals because the way the bow is held, it protects the archer from the enemy/ animal without hurting their horses.

It could be a really fun style to implement if the commander is on an archery tournament, siege on the battlefield or even just a cool party trick they could be showing to the samjogo.

Like I could see a cheeky/haughty commander coming up to the tournament and pulling this style. Everyone laughs at them until the commander wins the tournament with JUST that style and blowing everyone to dust. Or they could be hunting with fellow samjogo members and are trying to catch deers and see the commander pulling this weird ass stunt. Scoff at them. Then look at utter shock that it managed to kill a deer at all!

i've read about the jarmakee before!! it's a really neat pose - it looks so impractical and so strange but it really does fire beautifully. i'll try to incorporate some fancier shooting techniques into the next chapter!!
