Summaries under the cut
The Cat Ate My Gymsuit by Paula Danzinger
Marcy Lewis is bored by school, she knows she's never going to be thin, and she is dead sure she'll never have a date. Life at home isn't great either, since her father bosses her and her mother around. Then along comes Ms. Finney, an English teacher who'll try anything in the classroom and actually treats kids like human beings. Now that she's found a teacher who sees Marcy as more than a name on an attendance sheet, Marcy realizes her life could mean something. When Ms. Finney is suspended, Marcy knows she's got to take a stand. But is this new independence worth the price she'll pay at school and at home?
Magic Shop by Bruce Coville
Russell Crannaker, a rather timid boy who is eager to frighten the school bully on Halloween night, acquires a magic ring and the power to change himself into a hideous monster.
Thimble Summer by Elizabeth Enright
When Garnet finds a silver thimble in the sand by the river, she is sure it’s magical. But is it magical enough to help her pig, Timmy, win a blue ribbon on Fair Day?
The Edge Chronicles by Paul Stewart
Fourteen-year-old Quint Verginix is the only remaining son of famous sky-pirate Wind Jackal. He and his father have journeyed to the city of Sanctaphrax – a great floating rock, bound to the ground below by a chain, its inhabitants living with their heads literally in the clouds.
But the city hides a dangerous secret: deep inside the great rock, something horrible lurks. With his father away, Quint may be the only one who can save Sanctaphrax from the dreaded curse of the gloamglozer . . .
School of Fear by Gitty Daneshvari
Everyone is afraid of something...
Madeleine Masterson is deathly afraid of bugs, especially spiders.
Theodore Bartholomew is petrified of dying.
Lulu Punchalower is scared of confined spaces.
Garrison Feldman is terrified of deep water.
With very few options left, the parents of these four twelve year-olds send them to the highly elusive and exclusive School of Fear to help them overcome their phobias. But when their peculiar teacher, Mrs. Wellington, and her unconventional teaching methods turn out to be more frightening than even their fears, the foursome realize that this just may be the scariest summer of their lives.
Pillage by Obert Skye
Upon his mother's death, fifteen-year-old Beck Phillips is sent to live with an eccentric uncle he had never met in a remote manor house, where he learns that his family suffers from a curse that allows him to make plants grow on command and dragon eggs hatch.
The Blackwell Pages by K. L. Armstrong
In Viking times, Norse myths predicted the end of the world, an event called Ragnarok, that only the gods can stop. When this apocalypse happens, the gods must battle the monsters--wolves the size of the sun, serpents that span the seabeds, all bent on destroying the world.
The gods died a long time ago.
Matt Thorsen knows every Norse myth, saga, and god as if it was family history--because it is family history. Most people in the modern-day town of Blackwell, South Dakota, in fact, are direct descendants of either Thor or Loki, including Matt's classmates Fen and Laurie Brekke.
However, knowing the legends and completely believing them are two different things. When the rune readers reveal that Ragnarok is coming and kids--led by Matt--will stand in for the gods in the final battle, he can hardly believe it. Matt, Laurie, and Fen's lives will never be the same as they race to put together an unstoppable team to prevent the end of the world.
The Star of Kazan by Eva Ibbotson
Annika is happy living in the servants' quarters of a house owned by three eccentric professors. She adores Ellie and Sigrid, the cook and housemaid who found her as a baby, abandoned on a church doorstep. In the eleven years since, they have taught her how to bake and clean to perfection. Then one day a glamorous stranger arrives, claiming to be Annika's mother. Annika is no servant, she learns, but an aristocrat whose true home is an ancient castle. But at crumbling Spittal, Annika discovers that all is not as it seems in the lives of her newfound family. . .
The Enchanted Castle by E. Nesbit
Jerry, Jimmy, and Cathy stumble upon a mysterious castle with a beautiful princess asleep in the garden. The princess is really Mabel, the housekeeper's niece, who is only pretending to be royalty. But when she shows them a secret room filled with treasure where they discover a magical ring, enchantment becomes a reality.
Fairy Oak by Elizabetta Gnone
Fairy Oak is the name of a village that grew up in the shade of a talking oak tree, an imaginary place, lost in the mists of time immemorial, overlooking a stormy sea, next to uplands covered in snow in winter, surrounded by enchanted woods, vast meadows, crystal clear rivers and lakes. A healthy and uncontaminated nature, which dominates and envelops the worlds in which the stories unfold. Within the walls of the old village there lives an equally old community, a mixed bag of funny characters, with the rituals, customs, habits and familiarity of a serene, cheerful, lively people. The books chronicle the adventures of the adolescent twins Vanilla and Lavender. To save their people, menaced by a cruel enemy, they go on a long journey deep into the labyrinths of their powers. Since the girls are very young, at first lots of things go wrong. Some are frightening. In short, it’s not going to be easy at all! But someone and something will help them.

CHAPTER 4 NOW ONLINE
Sneak Peak (for more follow the link):
Lucy stands motionless in her flat for another minute or so, looking through the open door at the hallway outside her flat. Through the open door Chris has just stormed through. Her mind is whirling. What had that just been? Had he just acted like a five-year-old? Had she really asked for his playbook? Had he just left her flat in a huff? Had she really asked for his playbook? Had he just refused to talk about the reasons for the break-up?
She can't believe she asked for his playbook!
How stupid! Last night she did nothing but google ways to end a relationship painlessly. Then she was also practicing with Thorsen. And then all she can think of is this stupid and cruel Tim-Bradford-line? She shakes her head and is horrified at herself. But it can't be helped now.
She looks at the door. The open door. Standing in her own flat. Motionless. As if petrified and frozen. And then she storms towards the small table that stands next to the front door, grabs her key, and slams the door behind her. Clearly heart faster than brain. And before she knows it, she is standing in front of the LAPD headquarters. Only now does it occur to her that Tim might already be off work. She pulls into the car park in front of the building. She sees that there are still some empty spaces in front of the entrance. Which is because of the time of day. It is much less busy than during the day. And then she sees his truck parked in the Watch Commander parking spot. So, he's still there.
She parks, takes another quick look in the mirror, and makes her way to his office. Grey's office. She can see him from a distance. He is sitting at his desk, looking at something he is holding that she can't make out. The light in his office is dimmed. Only the lamp from his desk is burning. And when she sees him, those butterflies start flying again and a longing spread through her. A longing she has never had for any other man. She has such an incredible longing for him. She would love to spend every minute with him. To look at him. Listen to him. Touch him. All of it. At the same time. Uninterrupted.
As she stands in the doorway, he still hasn't noticed her. She knocks gently against the doorframe and the sound is almost a little loud in the silence of the room. He glances up.
"How's it going?" she asks.

Last night's 2 hour finale.. These are my thoughts so far:
I feel like I had a chenford infused dream based on reading too much fan fiction, because I'm pretty sure I just watched a fan fiction and I'm on my second rewatch so far..
I will give more when my brain cells return to normal, thankfully I'll have a month to do so. I just know I have never been this excited to watch a tv show, and I was a hardcore Grey's fan back in its golden day. I will share some thoughts initially:
Grey and Luna=absolute power couple, we NEED more of them. They were so good to watch
Watch Commander Tim is probably the hottest thing I've seen on this show
I finally but the Celina and Nolan TO relationship. I loved the callback to Nolan's shooting, Finally this character is humanized
Genny and Nolan-my newest ship, whoa, that chemistry and understanding
Chris is literally the worst. Even without Tim, he's a giant walking red flag
Lucy broke up with Chris to be with Tim, I am shookethhhhhh
Thorsen you said what we've al been saying including tim
"Do you love him?" My jaw hit the floor
I hope everyone is enjoying this as much as I am.

This was so wild. I really loved how Tim is the pursuer in this. The grumpy, absolutely can't be bothered, stern, ruthless man is the one reaching out about their feelings. She's probably the only woman other than Isabel that he's actively pursued (Lucy set him up with Rachel and Ashley asked him out). I'm glad the writers keep showing this side of him that we haven't really seen Not sure how I feel about Lucy going straight into another relationship. I mean I love Chenford and am ovee the moon but...I really wanted a finding herself period. And seeing Aaron be excited about being a detective reminded me how I want to see the same with Lucy. Team Chen for Watch Commander.
Anyways, can't wait to read your thoughts about it even though I think we're all collectively still in the asdfghhjkasdjjfjghj stage!
Agreed! I like that Lucy pulls out a different side of Tim.
I'm with you in wanting Lucy to take a bit of a breather between Chris and Tim. I liked that Tim gets that a bit between Ashley and Lucy.
Then again, the cliffhanger of 5x09 is that they're planning their first date, so that doesn't mean this relationship will fast-forward to love confessions and cohabitation. Instead, there's a great chance that they'll take their time, which the story supports.
If not, Lucy can still find herself even if she's dating Tim. I'd actually like to see that, too, and it will be inevitable once Tim and Lucy make it official. After all, Lucy (and Tim) doesn't stop developing as a character once she's in a relationship -- or, at least, I hope not.
And, yes! The Rookie is so lucky to have Aaron Thorsen. He's such a blast of a character. He livens up every scene he's in, so I'm hoping that detective angle gives him more screen time. It could give him MORE screen time WITH Lucy if The Rookie advances Lucy's career explorations, too. I would be such a fan of that.
Thank you for your kind words and for being interested in my opinions about The Rookie and Chenford. It means a lot that you always send thoughtful and friendly messages to my inbox so we can talk TV together. I like our little community.

What do you think could happen with Grey going to New York to see his family? Do you think it could open a door for Tim to be watch commander? It would kind of make sense with Lucy riding with Thorsen in recent bits photos. Think that could give Tim and Lucy some wiggle room?
For sure in 5x9 I think that’s what will happen. Grey is in NY so naturally it should be Tim taking over which makes sense because as we’ve seen Lucy and Aaron are riding together and in Eric’s recent cameo he said changes are happening and people being partnered with others and big stuff for Bradford so… and as far as Tim and Lucy I’m just not sure, I don’t know all the logistics of how they can work around their positions. Even if 🤞🏻🤞🏻 Chris and Lucy break up in e8 or e9 that still leaves Tim being her superior. From bts we know Lucy is still on patrol at least up until e14/e15 which is what they are filming now. Unless there is some loophole or they are secretly dating I still don’t see how we have Chenford together at this point and we are getting deeper into the season.

I just read the tags, my bad! Here is the 🌹 with an I love your work! And your gif sets.
Weirdly, Thorsen didn’t seem affected by her nearing-crazed tone. He cocked his head to the side as his eyes scanned the room, landing somewhere over her left shoulder. Lucy didn’t bother turning around, energy gone from her mini tirade, she slumped in her seat- resting her chin on the top of her thermos knowing she looked likely as pathetic to the casual observer as she felt. Thorsen—voice calm, almost nonplussed—brought his eyes back to Lucy’s hunched form, So why don’t you move in with Tim? Isn’t he taking care of your dog any way? He’s got a house—” Thorsen shrugged, “and hell I bet he’d even like the extra income to help with his mortgage. Can’t be cheap anywhere in LA…” he trailed off just as Grey walked in, commanding everyone’s attention.
Something clattered against the vinyl floor from behind Lucy, and she barely registered Nyla mumbling an apology. Lucy turned just enough in her seat to glance back at a mouth half-agape Tim who clearly heard enough of Thorsen’s suggestion. Yet before she got the chance to even address the proposition, Grey was clearing his throat and calling out in his familiar tone that bordered on exasperated dad, “Officer Chen, did you need something?”
Swiveling around so fast Lucy sent her coffee thermos careening towards the edge—Nolan just able to shoot a hand out to catch it and prevent the spill. Folding her hands rapidly, she looked up to Grey and gave a curt nod, “N-nope, no, sir.”
#🌹 meme#sorry it took so long! got busy this weekend lol#no worries about the tags appreciate you sending another one 😘 haha#chenford#continuation of the other 🌹 ask i *just* posted

Half-Life 2: Deathmatch is a multiplayerfirst-person shooter video game developed by Valve. Released on Steam on November 30, 2004, it uses many of the assets from Half-Life 2 and its Source engine. It features new levels, optimized for multiplayer arena play, and a few new weapons. Also included are portions of the game's source code, which were the basis for many early Source-based multiplayer modifications. The game is the successor to the popular multiplayer component of the original Half-Life, but is offered as a separate product from Half-Life 2. Deathmatch, like Half-Life's multiplayer, does not develop any part of the plot or story of the Half-Life series.
Gameplay(edit)
Deathmatch(edit)
Gravity gun in Half Life 2: Deathmatch.
Deathmatch includes some notable features such as instant respawn; weapons that have specific spawn points; and special abilities (sprint, flashlight, etc.). The aim of the deathmatch is simple: the player must kill other players to score points. If the player accidentally self-kills, they lose points. If a player is killed, they will respawn with 100 health points and the default spawn weapons, but will lose all the weapons and ammunition acquired before being killed.
The game is server based and each server contains different rules for each round therefore there is no default time limit or kill limit for each round.
Syndrome catatonique. Crack Baby Syndrome With the arrival of the relatively inexpensive and smokable crack form of cocaine, the rate of newborns exposed to cocaine in utero rose dramatically in the early 1990s. In the mid-1990s it was estimated that 1.1% of pregnant women used crack cocaine.
Team Deathmatch(edit)
In the team deathmatch mode, players are organized in two teams, Resistance and Combine, both of them with different characters that appear exactly as they do in Half-Life 2. In the gaming aspect, team deathmatch has almost the same rules as deathmatch mode, except for:
Instead of only one player winning the round, the team with the higher score wins.
If friendly fire is enabled, one point is deducted each time a teammate is killed.
If the player selected a Resistance model for his character, and they are taken to the Combine team, they will get a random model from the list of Combine models. Nevertheless, if the player dislikes that character, they are able to choose another one from the list.
If the teams are unbalanced, the team with fewer players won't get players from the other team, (unless the server owner had 'Auto-Balance' enabled) instead, they will get new players connected to the server.

As a corrections officer, do you ever use military like commands on inmates? Like calling them to the position of attention, saying things like forward march or having them refer to you as ma'am?
They damn sure better refer to me as ma’am. Or Officer Thorsen.
I can’t say I have called them to attention before or told them to march, but I just might do that now lol.

A Recap of the 2017 CWP User Group
This year was the 11th Annual CWP User Group at FileMaker DevCon. We had a full house,
although unfortunately the room was long and narrow, so people in the back couldn't see the small screen very well. Please include a comment about the room when you rate the meeting via DevCon2Go or the web page.
Once again we had five people come up and share with the group. (Please consider sharing something next year! Just let me know (early enough) and I'll block out a slot for you!)
Joel Shapiro @jsfmp (yours truly) - details below…
Steve Winter @steveWinterNZ talked about a Doctrine driver that's used for DB abstraction with things like Laravel & Symphony: https://msdev.co.uk/filemaker-cwp-symfony-doctrine
Mark DeNyse @mdenyse showed some of an iOS app that he built with the FileMaker iOS SDK that communicates with FileMaker Server only via CWP.
Ken d’Oronzio @kdoronzio showed us the "fmREST" PHP class that he's created for working with the Data API through PHP. It's FREE :) and available at: https://www.sosimplesoftware.com/fmrest.php
Gjermund Thorsen ggt667 gave us a taste of his CRUUx for CRUD - a mixture of FM DATA API, CWP, and REST API: here and here
In case you couldn't tell, I'm not much of a note-taker, so if you want more details from any of the other presenters, please contact them directly ;-)
My turn…
I started by sharing the sad news that longtime FileMaker and Web developer, Tim 'Webko' Booth, died of cancer on July 2. He was 46 years old. He'd actually been planning on coming to this year's DevCon for his first time after working with FileMaker for 20 years, but in April he wrote to the FX.php list that he'd been diagnosed with kidney cancer. He'd been very active on a number of FileMaker and web lists and forums, for many many years. I was able to find — in an archive of the old usenet comp.databases.filemaker — an interaction I'd had with Webko in 2000 (17 yrs ago!) in which he'd helped me with some CDML, and I know that many other CWP developers had similar experiences. It's a big loss to the FileMaker/CWP community, as well as of course to his family and friends back in Australia.
Cross-browser testing
I then talked briefly about doing cross-browser testing through sites like BrowserStack and CrossBrowserTesting, and how you can use CrossBrowserTesting for FREE for small(-ish) components of your websites if you put those parts into a "pen" on CodePen — as long as you have an account on each site (free accounts are fine). I use this for testing things like new animations or components that I know may not be fully compatible with older browsers or OSes. And did I mention it’s FREE?
File sync
Next, I showed a quick demo of my favorite file-sync tool: Forklift. I use git (via Git Tower) for file versioning, but for syncing my development sites up to my clients' production servers, I use Forklift to create what it calls "synclets". These are little apps that perform each sync… without Forklift having to be open! Just have the remote directory open on your computer (e.g. via “Connect to Server…”) and double-click the synclet. As simple as that! NOTE: This is with Forklift 2. Forklift 3 has just come out and it has a similar, if differently named, feature.
So, if you don’t love the way you currently do file sync, you might want to check out Forklift.
What’s the future of CWP (XML & PHP)?
After this we looked at the current state of CWP, specifically XML- and PHP-based CWP. As we all know, FileMaker Inc. is now pushing their new Data API as "the way to go"* for connecting to FileMaker Server. Of course it's still in beta through Sept. 2018 and we don't yet know how they'll price its use (which makes it pretty difficult for us to plan new projects), but the days of XML- & PHP-based CWP are clearly numbered. In fact, I was surprised by how many people throughout DevCon, including one of the top engineers at FMI, believed that CWP is already deprecated, even though it officially is not.
*At the "Under the Hood: FileMaker Data API" session, someone in the audience innocently asked what the advantages are of using the Data API instead of PHP/XML in the example they’d demoed, especially since the code shown was quite complex, using Node.js and pug.js. When he didn't get a straightforward answer, he asked if it was perhaps because the Data API was faster. One of the presenters responded that it was because "the Data API is the way to go"(!)
Changes to CWP support with FM 16
I pointed out a recent discovery that FM 16 has dropped CWP support for Get (TemporaryPath) & Send Mail [with Attachments]. These weren't announced in any release notes although they were noted in the Help docs. Fortunately, Andrew Duncan found that you can use PSOS to regain access via CWP.
As a follow-up, FMI has since clarified that this new incompatibility is due to changes made to FMS 16: “Web clients (WebDirect, XML, & PHP) and FM Data API calls can no longer directly access files that are on the server (DBS) or worker (WPE) host file systems via scripting.”
Our options…
I then showed this table of the current options we have for doing CWP:
The first five options — FileMaker PHP API, FX.php, RESTfm, fmxj.js and the new FM PHP API “rewrite” (see below) — are all dependent upon the survival of the XML Web Publishing Engine. When that goes away, all sites using any of these options will either need to change to the Data API or stop upgrading FMServer once the XML WPE is dropped.
Support for PHP 7.x
Separate from the issue of how long we’ll be able to use the current WPE, the FM PHP API cannot be used with PHP higher than 5.6, so for anyone needing to use a more-recent version of PHP, we need an alternative. Two months ago, Romain Dunand (@airmoi) of 1-more-thing released a “rewrite” of the FM PHP API on github (which they blogged about at “No, the FileMaker API-PHP is not dead!”). When I found out about this, I wanted to see how easy it would be to switch a site from the FM API to this new rewrite. I was happy how smooth the transition was and so I did a demo for the group (details below).
As soon as I finished the demo, two other options came out. Our own Steve Winter told us that he’s modified FileMaker.php to support PHP 7.x and he’s made it available at: https://github.com/matatirosolutions/filemakerapi. All you’d need to do is swap out his modified file with the original FileMaker.php file and you’ll be compatible with PHP 7.x. (Someone else commented that there’s a command-line change he’d made to make the FM API compatible with PHP 7.x, but he didn’t have a reference to give us.)
The FileMaker PHP API Rewrite
Romain’s rewrite has a number of features that are not in the original API (all listed on its github page), such as new error-handling, but what had most interested me was its support for PHP 7.x and seeing how easy it was to switch an existing site from the FM API.
First, you need to place the rewrite folder on your web server (I named it “api-rewrite”) and then, instead of calling 'FileMaker.php' you call 'api-rewrite/autoloader.php'.
You’ll then need to add:
$fm->setProperty('errorHandling', 'default')
(unless you want to change all your existing calls to the API).
And then you need to place these two lines onto every page that calls FileMaker:
use airmoi\FileMaker\FileMaker;
use airmoi\FileMaker\FileMakerException;
which namespaces the FM API within the rewrite.
With those few changes, your site will now work fine on PHP 7.x.
Or, as noted above, if all you need to do is make your FM API site compatible on PHP 7.x, you could just replace the original FileMaker.php with the one that Steve has modified.
My 15 minutes…
Well, that pretty much took up my time at the group… But for anyone who couldn't read the screen during my intro, when I shared that I'd won Second Place(!) in a national magazine's weekly contest just three days before our meeting, here are the details on that:
The Week magazine has a contest every week. On July 21, 2017, they announced the winners of the previous week’s contest. I won Second Place (ahem):
The Question: “A report from a national veterinary chain revealed that one in three American house pets is obese because of lack of exercise, overfeeding, and owners who "use treats as a form of communication." If an entrepreneur were to launch a Weight Watchers-style program for pets, what could it be called?”
SECOND PLACE: “Rovereaters Anonymous” Joel Shapiro, San Francisco

Do you think with the storyline of Grey going to New York to be with family will allow Tim to be watch commander for a little while? And this will allow Thorsen to ride with Lucy and maybe give Tim and Lucy some wiggle room? We know Tim will not pursue a relationship while she is under his reporting. #Chenford
I would assume so — if the show doesn't do a time-jump so that Grey's trip is off-screen.
It would be exciting to see Tim take on a larger leadership role, even if it's temporary. It took him a while to come around to becoming Sergeant. It'd be a cool story to see Tim grapple with a larger role and see if that's something he would want to pursue permanently.
Because, yes, The Rookie needs to dissolve or evolve Tim and Lucy's power dynamic before they enter into a romantic relationship.

by nothing is impossible for a willing heart
Tool description These are generally chosen for the following qualities: compact and light (suitable to wear in a belt holster in some applications) constructed as a single piece with various moving parts, so one component is not lost while using another (except for the New Wave, Surge, and all Charge models, Skeletool and Skeletool CX which all have two-sided removable screwdriver bits) when collapsed for storage, relatively smooth and blunt compared to the equivalent discrete tools, thus reducing frequency of damage to items stored along with it. Most models of the Leatherman brand have a built-in safety mechanism that locks selected tools in the open position when fully unfolded. Different models have various methods for unlocking the tools. In older models that use "clumping" locks, one of the other tools has to be partly unfolded to release the first one; if all the tools of this model were to be fully unfolded simultaneously, then an external tool might be needed to unlock them. In 1998, Leatherman used its first button lock on the Crunch tool, allowing each tool to be refolded. In 1999, Leatherman began using liner locks on the blades of the Wave tool, which allowed it to be accessed without unfolding the entire tool. The method in which the pliers are exposed is similar to that of the butterfly knife. In 2005, Leatherman added knives to their product line including straight and serrated-edged blades. Leatherman introduced its first pruner gardening tool in 2006. Company history The Leatherman Tool Group was founded by Timothy S. Leatherman, a 1970 graduate of Oregon State University who majored in mechanical engineering. According to a December 10, 1981 column written by Bill Monroe in The Oregonian, Leatherman came up with the idea of a "Boy Scout knife with pliers" during a 1975 driving tour of Europe with his wife, when he was unable to use his pocket knife to fix his repeatedly malfunctioning car. Leatherman spent several years perfecting his prototype, getting his first patent in 1980. He also spent those early years refining his sales model. He originally expected that industrial companies with large staffs of technicians would be his target customer, but attempts to sell the tool to companies such as AT&T failed. It was only after following the advice of a contact at the Early Winters catalog company to simplify his product that sales began to grow. It was mail-order catalog companies such as Early Winters and Cabela's that gave Leatherman his first significant sales. Tim Leatherman formed Leatherman Tool Group to sell his creation in 1983. In 1996 the company expanded its manufacturing facility to 90,000 square feet (8,400 m2) from 30,000 square feet (2,800 m2) in 1994. Leatherman Tool Group lost a lawsuit for deceptive advertising that was overturned in 2006, but were still required to advertise in California that the company had violated laws in that state. In 2007 the company opened its first retail store, located at its manufacturing facility in Portland, Oregon. Tim Leatherman was inducted into the Blade Magazine Cutlery Hall of Fame at the 2007 Blade Show in Atlanta, Georgia in recognition for the impact that his design has made upon the cutlery industry.
