442. Thankfully, after all this time, I’m still not at a LOSS for making the puns for these Fair Game HCs!
@jadekitty777 made a request of me the other day to do an episode on how Qrow and Clover deal with loss. Easy, no?! Well, me being me, I decided to go ahead and come up with not one, not two, not three, not four, not five, but SIX episodes on Qrow, Clover, and loss: How Qrow handled loss prior to meeting Clover, how Clover handled loss prior to meeting Qrow, how Qrow helps others (Not Clover) grieve, how Clover helps others (Not Qrow) grieve, how Qrow and Clover faced losses together, and Qrow and Clover attending funerals. I don’t think I’ll cover them consecutively, but I do intend to go through them all.
(And of course, because my Fair Game HC-i-verse only exists on a plane of good writing, like always, a certain garbage episode will not be mentioned in any of these HCs, just in case anyone was worried)
So here we go with how a pre-Clover Qrow experienced and handled loss.
Qrow’s introduction to loss happens as a child in his tribe. He loses his parents either due to sickness or on a mission. There aren’t many shoulders to cry on in his tribe, but Qrow isn’t devoid of emotions by a long shot. That said, though he doesn’t come out of the experience with a distaste for showing emotions, there is a small, intrinsic, and kind of toxic lesson that is imparted to him about how being strong is equal to holding in his feelings (Something that life helps him see is unhealthy).
During this loss, Qrow and Raven grow much closer. Raven’s far better suited to swallowing her emotions, though she and Qrow do reflect on memories of them together as well as responsibilities and lessons they taught them. It’s a passive way of handling grief, but given his environment, it accomplishes the task.
At first, because he didn’t know his semblance, Qrow didn’t blame himself for what happened. However, once he does discover his semblance, he looks back at the death of his parents not with a sense of guilt, but with doubt and light paranoia, asking a number of questions about the circumstances and how they might have been tangentially related to things Qrow said or did beforehand.
In addition to his parents, because the tribe is as closely knit as it is and there are a lot of bandits and probably old people, Qrow does lose others.
In V5, Qrow grieves for the many dead Huntsmen he finds. He doesn’t do so in front of the kids, but does inform Oz of what happened when Oz asks him once they’re next alone. Oz consoles Qrow lightly by lamenting on their losses, calling them good, kind, and passionate Hunters and Huntresses that he was proud to have as students. It’s not overly sappy, either to Qrow or the passed Huntsmen and Huntresses, and Qrow appreciates that.
When Qrow is dealing with loss, he mentally kind of freezes up. His emotions don’t consume him, per se, but mentally, his mind has a lot of trouble shifting away from that loss until he’s had proper time to at least initially process it, and that can take on average about a day. Qrow tends to be quiet when dealing with loss. He’ll speak, but his answers are soft and short -- not curt, though they can be if someone is testing his patience. Anger is part of how he handles loss, though it’s entirely dependent on how the person passed, what (if any) emotional buttons are being pushed, and what tasks need to be accomplished (Huntsmen stuff, funeral proceedings, etc).

hi idea i want to write but am too lazy to compile:
there needs to be a klance canon divergent au of lance idk, being manipulated by druid magic or possibly (and i like this idea better) post-undercover mission instructed by shiro and getting caught, trying to escape in his ship (not Blue) and it crashing and a galra leader blowing it up and Lotor (who, since i have watched one episode, is Bad To Me) finds him near-death after being begrudgingly ordered to kill him, but with n o m e m o r y of anything - he thinks his name is Tailor until Lotor comes to the conclusion by galaxy rumors that his name is Lance - and is thus coined a ~*~*~perfect right-hand man~*~*~, a perfect soldier, who has all the muscle memory of an excellent pilot and shooter but no recollection of his home or his family or his life or his friends, so nothing to hold him back from getting the job done.
And Lotor takes him under his wing to not exactly work with the galra (because he’s a prince damn it he has earned his place to take control of what he can and will not be ordered by shitty galra lieutenants) but still do Bad Things. He’s got Acxa and others and essentially overthrow governments for their team, collecting weapons and information and money and the like (but Lotor is sending most of this to Zarkon for control blah blah complications whatever)
Meanwhile the team is like, totally distraught. Nearly fallen apart. They have a funeral for Lance because they have no reason to think he’s alive. Keith, who had a fleeting moment with Lance a few days prior, who had developed feelings for him, blames Shiro for his death. Hunk’s furious with the team in general and demands they go home. Pidge is immensely sad and stops sleeping because she lost another brother figure. Shiro doesn’t blame Keith for being angry and agrees this is his fault. Keith’s being extra-“let’s throw my life on the line every mission who gives a shit anymore” until he and Shiro have a Serious Talk. Allura is reluctant but forces herself to attach to Blue, whom is also relectant (they later find out it’s cus Lance Is Alive and Blue Wants Her Paladin).
Anyway Kolivan, leader of the BOM, who Keith has been occassionally working under for more missions to kill himself in, comes to the castle of lions with news about the galra a few months after Lance’s death. He requests their help with stopping a side group of galra who don’t seem to be directly working with Zarkon but are on the map in a massive way and causing havoc and know team voltron wanna be involved. Allura is automatically in but Hunk is so fucking done he wants to go home. He wants to go to Cuba and see Mrs McClain and apologize and cry about their son. And then Kolivan pulls out a tablet that reveals a hologram of Lance.
Lance, in a bright purple uniform, a scar from his temple to his brow, hoisting a galra-styled rifle and perched on a futuristic building, aiming below, clearly unaware of his photo being taken. Alive.
And Keith snatches the tablet from Kolivan “when was this taken?”
“Three days ago.”
Anyway so Team Voltron and BOM team up immediately to get Lance but BOM’s goal is Lotor and the other galra Keith and Hunk (and Shiro, who is still very guilty) are all “we’re getting Lance and regrouping fuck this.” They end up on a planet untouched by Zarkon but in near chaos cus of Lotor’s team, and the BOM are chasing some of the galra in their ships, losing em, and team voltron are also in ships (not the lions), and Keith’s chasing Lotor but then his ship gets slammed into and it’s Lance, he just knows, so he has Shiro and Kolivan continue after Lotor while he chases Lance. He shoots out a cable that catches onto Lance’s ship and forces it to (roughly) land and he runs out of his ship to get Lance, who’s stumbling out
and Keith calls out to him and Lance shoots him.
Keith is able to dodge it enough so it grazes him but Lance quickly shoots at the cable attached to his ship to get it off and runs back in before escaping.
And in his sheer disbelief of what just happened, he hears on the coms that Lotor also escaped, and Hunk and Pidge’s ship crashed, and this was a fucking mess, and Lance looked right at him and just shot him, what the hell -
Anyway lots of heists and chasing and Keith has Pidge catch wind of Lance at an underground hover cycle race on a planet with lots of crime (Lance had ditched Lotor and his team for some air as things were getting Tense between him and Lotor, who was usually very on top of Lance in a protective, possessive way that was kinda creepy but also not necessarily Bad, unlike now where Lotor is being possessive and gross and Lance was starting to question things because Blue was trying to communicate with him through quintessence as the Castle Ship kinda hovered nearer and nearer and Allura was trying to expand it???? idk i don’t watch this show does this make sense lmao) and Keith heads off there alone and sees him in his natural habitat and it’s almost like???? he was the same person? It’s post race and he rips off his helmet, cocky and smirking at an alien that he just beat. mouthing off to him and shooting finger guns at the crowd and winking and Keith’s heart soothes because shit, it’s Lance.
And Lance is getting ready to leave - he’s collected his winnings and such and he’s pulling out and Keith drives up to him and takes his helmet off and Lance double takes. And is like “um, hello?”
And Keith has, no idea, maybe it’s the cocky smirk he saw, but he revs his engine and says: “I hear you’re pretty good at racing around here.”
Lance laughs, sudden startlement pushed aside by amusement. “I’d say I’m the best pilot they’ve seen.”
“Wanna test that theory?”
And Lance is confused because like, he shot this guy? “Do you have a death wish or something, man?”
“Maybe,” Keith smirks. “I just wanna race.”
Lance blinks once, twice, then scoffs. Turns forward, “Fine. Your funeral.”
“This’ll be fun,” Keith turns forward as well. “Lance and Keith, neck and neck, remember?”
And Lance looks at him, because no, what the fuck? No he doesn’t.
Anyway they race through the city streets. It is indeed: Lance and Keith, Neck and Neck. Lance comes to the conclusion that this Keith is immensely fucking good at racing. But so is Lance, who bypasses him on a few turns, of course until they start getting tailed by the city’s law enforcement. And Keith, who’s fucking crazy, is able to turn his bike around and force them to crash, and then pass Lance in reverse, and take the lead.
And win.
And Lance is pissed but he takes this loss and pulls out into an open field and Keith and him bicker a bit about the race and Keith criticizes him but also “but you got better with the accelerating. You just break too much on turns. You do that when you pilot, too.”
“I’m confused. So you know how I pilot, now?”
“Yeah, I know how you pilot. I know you.”
“No, you don’t,” Lance argues. “You don’t know me.”
“You’re a pilot, you’re good with a gun -”
“Everyone knows that,” Lance cuts in. “Everyone on this planet knows that. I made a name for myself here. That doesn’t mean you know anything about me—”
“I know you’re from Cuba, on Earth.” Keith argues back. “I know you have a large family. I know you love the ocean, and that you miss rain.”
Lance is quiet, then, “I don’t remember rain.”
“Maybe not. But I can help you remember it.”
And at this point they’ve gotten closer and they’re talking and Lance asks where he got the scar on his face “if you know me so well” and Keith tells him the story, breezing over their moment and tells him about Shiro, and fighting the galra, and that Lance is a paladin of -
And in comes Lotor, his ship coming in from above and landing, him and another Galra, and call out to Lance, in a calm, orderly fashion and Keith and Lance both freeze. Lotor tells Lance to meet at the randezvous point and Lance hesitates until Lotor repeats himself, and Lance sighs, looks at Keith and salutes him, and gets on his hoverbike with one last look before driving off to get to the ship he docked and fly off.
And then Lotor and Keith face off. Not fighty but more argumentative. And Lotor expresses just how much control he has over Lance, who’s so flighty lately since Voltron got involved and it’s agitating, and Lotor offers information on inside Galra war plans in exchange for Keith and his team to back off.
“And Lance?”
Lotor eyes him. “He stays.”
“Then no.”
And Keith takes out his sword because he’s honestly had it with Lotor and then he sees Lotor brought more than just one Galra, but another humanoid-alien, who comes out aiming a laser at Keith. And then bam bam Hunk appears from Yellow, who he took down to follow after Keith because fuck you, Lance is his best friend he wants him back, canon bayard loaded and trained on Lotor.
Anyway no harm comes from it and then after a battle happens with the Lions and Lance being forced to eject from the warship with a few others and join the fight and Lance is Not Feeling This (he feels super connected to Blue and Lotor is on his ass about Keith and Lance Does Not Remember fuck off). Keith sees this and has Red get close to Lance, with Shiro and everyone yelling at him, and he propells to Lance’s ship outta the jaw of Red and has Red back outta the line of fire, and somehow blah blah, gets into Lance’s ship. And Lance is like ?????? but then immediately sees that Lotor is aiming a canon at them and they’re gonna blow up and they do, until Red comes in and snatches them up. Keith is unconscious. Lance is confused. He sees Team Voltron on the vid cam and doesn’t know what’s happening. He tries to explain what Lotor’s doing and that Keith got knocked out with the blast and he’s so confused and why is the yellow guy crying, what’s going on, until Allura tries to get Lance to pilot Red, and Lance argues with her a bit while settling Keith in what looks like a seconadry pilot chair that miraculously popped up. And then Lance, like, hears this Lion-thing? Speaking to him??? And he pilots Red and Lotor escapes and they go back to the castle of Lions, get Keith into a pod, and everyone hugs Lance, who still doesn’t???? Understand????
Anyway. Long story short. He re-meets the team. Joins the fight. Pilots Blue again, who he confesses to have been hearing in some sorta abyss for the last month. Has a heart to heart with Shiro. Cries with Hunk. Re-falls for Keith. Big battle. He gets his memory back later. The end.

Will Allura Die in S 8???
So I’ve seen a few people posting som screen shots of Voltron season 8 and I found them really cute but there were some things that make me really worried. Like the title says, Will Allura Die in season 8?
Let me back track for a second and show you why I think she’ll die.
In one screenshot it’s everyone all together with the gang. We’ve got Shiro and Keith, the Garrison Trio, Coran, And even the three mice from Altea. But you know who we don’t see? Allura. Though technically speaking she’s is in the picture… just not alive.
If you zoom in it is easy to tell that that Allura is a statue. And so I thought maybe she did something really heroic that saved all the universe or earth that earned her a statue but then another screenshot I saw got me thinking.
Y’all see Allura crying right? The back ground looks kinda spacey and she and Lance are in their Paladin suits. I don’t know but to me that looks like Allura is saying bye to Lance, this why she is crying and why it low key looks like she’s holding him and why Lance looks so sad.
Now here’s what I think is going to happen so just bear with me on this:
Paladins of Voltron go off into space to fight off the last villain (Haggard was it??). After a long fight they’re able to defeat the last boss but the final boss was smart and planted some self destruct bomb on the mecha suit they were using (saying that it was the mech suit from s 7). I’m gonna say that this bomb has a large blast radius so it will wipe out earth and a good chunk of the universe or at least 1/3.
Pidge and Hunk are trying to figure things out but off to the side Lance notices Allura staring at the bomb then at herself understanding completely what she’s thinking.
At first hes against it because he doesn’t want to loose Allura, they’ve been through so much together that he is a part of his family so he’ll do everything possible to keep her alive. But in the end Keith managed to calm down Lance (‘cause Klance is my main otp) and convince him that if Allura wants to do it then let her. And Lance listens because he gets that if Keith -someone who obviously considers them all family even if he doesn’t verbally express it- is allowing Allura to go on with her plan then he has to as well.
Allura is saying her final good byes to everyone ending with Lance. She gives him a really sweet talk which ends up with her crying and perhaps Lance in the end. Then Allura is going off towards the bomb. And her walking towards the bomb comes from the screenshot of how calm-like the background is which gives me the thought that maybe they’re in some special place or something.
Long story short Allura saves everyone in return to sacrificing herself. The Paladins fly back to earth with the Black Lion carrying the Blue Lion. Everyone is cheering but the Paladins aren’t and Coran and Shiro notice this -that being that they weren’t in contact at the time. Being the Space Dad and Space Uncle they ask what’s wrong and Keith breaks the news about Allura.
Things turn sad. A funeral is held. A statue is made in honor of Allura and everyone is just. Sad.
I don’t know. Just seeing Allura’s statue in the background and how sad Lance looked and how she was crying really got me thinking that maybe someone of the main character circle is going to die. Allura’s is the most plausible. Not to mention that in the screenshots of Shiro get married to some person I pretty sure everyone is present but Allura and you can tell it’s in the future because Pidge’s hair style and herself in general is different.
Man. I am going to cry almost at the same level as watching Naruto Shippuden. Which, btw, is a lot.
I’m not okay. This made me really sad.

Your Deep Rest
Pairing: Klance
Warnings: Death and lots of edge.
Word count: 1,798
Summary: Sometimes you realize you don’t know a person that well. Sometimes you can’t remember much about them no matter how many memories you made with them. Sometimes you come up with questions when its too late. Sometimes you find out the most about a person after they are gone.
It was a bright day. It wasn’t too hot out, but it wasn’t exactly “cool” either. It was a “perfect day to spend at the beach” as Lance would have said. He would beam with excitement, his eyes lighting up like the sun, and Keith would scowl and say that he “probably had something better to do.” But he would go anyways. Their group would play volleyball in the hot sand, and they would have chicken fights in the water. Laughter rang inside Keith’s head, the ghost of memory of the happy days he called in sick at work to hang out with his best friends. He had called in sick today, too, but for different reasons.
He squeezed his eyes shut, trying to ward off the tears building in his eyes. A lump had grown in his throat, making it in incredibly hard to breathe. He felt Shiro’s arm wrap over his shoulders, pulling him into a side hug as Kieth inhaled a sharp breath through his nose. After a minute he opened his eyes again. The sun shone into the church, but the light was hazy to Keith. He dared to glance across the room, but he instantly recognized this to be a mistake. He was only met with grieving, tear stained faces. Pidge stood to his side, her face angled to the floor as her shoulders shook with her silent sobs. “It’s like I’ve lost my brother all over again.” She had whispered to Keith soon after they found out.
Hunk was currently walking up to the podium, his face blank. He gingerly grasped the mic, his hands trembling as he leaned down a bit to speak into it. “Um, hello.” His voice was soft but broken. “My name is Hunk and-- and Lance was,” his voice cracked with the strain being put on it, “Lance McClain was my best-- my best friend.” His stiff expression split apart as he began to sob. “He was always there for me.. He was always there for everyone. He cared about everyone so much, I… I guess he forgot to care for himself along the way. I just--” he lowered his head, trying to collect himself as he moved his hands to cover his eyes. “I miss you buddy..” he whispered as if Lance was standing right there. But he wasn’t. Lance was in a wooden box. His eyes would never open again, his lips would never twist into one of those goofy grins they all loved. “I’m sorry, I had so much I wanted to say but--” Hunk wiped at his eyes, “I don’t think I could ever say enough…” Hunk took a deep breath and stepped away from the mic, slowly walking back to his spot next to Lance’s mother who instantly wrapped her arms around him, sobbing into his shoulder.
Even though it hurt, Keith couldn’t pull his eyes away from the scene.
After the funeral everyone slowly milled out. Keith stayed seated, Shiro even slowly getting up to let him sit with himself until he was ready to go to the burial. Lance’s family hung around for almost as long as Keith did, but they left the blank male alone as they grieved in front of the deceased McClain’s coffin together. They filed out for a bit, going to make sure the hearse was there and in order before they carried the coffin out. Keith took this short moment to stand up and drag himself over to the coffin. It was an open casket, allowing Keith to see a bust shot of his once rival. Even in death he looked gorgeous, but Keith couldn’t will himself to believe it was actually Lance. Lance was so full of life, this shell couldn’t be Lance. Keith found himself gingerly reaching down, brushing a strand of hair off of the brunette’s cheek. His skin almost seemed drained of color, even if he still had a tan tone to him. The suit was a dark contrast against his form, the blue flowers in his pocket the only real splash of color added to the picture. Keith stood there, his hands resting on the edge of the casket. There he started to realize he hadn’t even really known Lance McClain.
Days passed and Keith was losing more and more sleep every night. It didn’t feel real. He kept waiting for his phone to ring, to hear Lance’s annoyingly attractive voice on the other end, telling him to get his lazy ass up because the group was going to go see a movie. Then they would send a few insults back and forth as Keith struggled to pull one of his multiple pairs of black skinny jeans on. “By the way, can we take your car?” Keith covered his face with his hands, willing himself to pass out.
“We always take my car. Give me some money for gas this time.”
“I’ll make sure to pay you back at my grave.” Lance would laugh at his own joke and Keith would crack a smile.
“Whatever McClain.”
Keith turned his head, looking at the small stack of cash faintly outlined by moonlight on his nightstand. “All of the gas money I owe you.” Lance had smirked as he handed it to him, leaning against the door frame. Maybe if Keith had questioned him, maybe if Keith would have tried to look into his eyes, he could’ve seen it coming. He slowly sat up, deciding he had to do something about his racing mind.
It was one in the morning. He shouldn’t be here, but he couldn’t stop himself from knocking on the door. The street was quiet and so was the house he was currently at. He was about to turn around and walk away, but the porch light flashed on. He looked up at it in surprise, then turned his surprise to the opening door. He was now staring into the tired eyes of Lance’s mother, swallowing hard to try and hide his nerves. “Sorry.” He muttered softly, not knowing what else to say.
“It’s fine. I was awake anyways…” She stepped back, motioning the dark haired male inside. “Would you like a cup of coffee…?”
“Sure…”
Keith spent many nights over at the McClain’s. The first few days he didn’t say much, and neither did she, but slowly Keith opened up. He told her how he recently came to the conclusion he hadn’t known Lance as well as he thought. How he felt guilty for never actually taking the time to ask him questions about his interests and life before it was too late. Lance’s mother didn’t reply for a while and Keith started to fear he had upset her, but slowly she stood up.
“I think you should have something.” She started out of the kitchen and after a moment Keith stood and followed after her. Up the stairs and taking a turn to the left, he found himself standing behind the exhausted woman as she pushed a white door open. When she flicked on the lights Keith realized it was most likely Lance’s room. “He hadn’t moved out yet.. He said rooming here was much more comfortable and cheaper than staying at the dorms.” She spoke softly, slowly walking into the room. Keith stood frozen in the door frame, peering inside. The walls were a light purple and the comforter on his bed had multiple different shades of blue. His nightstand and dresser where dark blue with white knobs, and he had a small white desk pressed in the corner. Multiple pictures were scattered across the walls, fairy lights draped over them. It looked cozy, it looked like Lane.
Lance’s mother opened the bottom drawer of the nightstand, pulling out multiple composition books. “These are his journals.” She ran her hand across the surface of the one on top. She gingerly placed them down on the bed then passed Keith, leaving him alone.
At first Keith felt weird about reading something so personal about Lance, but after he read half of the first journal he found himself needing them more and more. He even ended up spending the night there after two weeks. He would pass out reading the books, leaving quietly in the morning before Lance’s parents got up. After three weeks Keith found Lance’s blue iPod and charged it up, listening to his playlist as he read.
He learned all sort of things about Lance. How he also looked up to Shiro, how Shiro was his reason to want to become an astronaut. How he was envious of Keith but still admired him. He wrote down memories of his childhood he randomly recalled and wanted to put down on paper. Baking with Hunk, and having “spa days” with Pidge to just hang out in one of their bedrooms and paint each others nails with face masks on. He wrote about laying on top of his roof, staring up at the stars. He wrote about the days they had all spent together, about his favorite moments or the girl he thought was cute. Keith learned Lance had never had a proper girlfriend outside of the one he had in third grade, he learned that he loved dogs and spent many volunteer hours at a shelter. He also found out how much Lance doubted himself, how much he compared himself to other people. About how some nights Lance cried himself to sleep because he didn’t think he could “do it anymore”. He was always so strong around his friends, always so confident. It always seemed like he thought he could conquer the world, and Keith always secretly believed he could, too. Keith could hardly stop reading the journals, not even to eat. Even when he wasn’t reading the journals he couldn’t stop thinking about them, he couldn’t stop thinking about Lance.
Though, deep down, he knew that no matter how many of the journals he read,or how many times he read them, he couldn’t bring him back. Lance was never coming back.
He was four journals in when he coughed up the first few flower petals onto one of the pages. Fear overtook him in that moment and his chest squeezed painfully. He panicked and coughed up even more flower petals, their bright colors becoming blurry against the dark carpet as tears welled up in Keith’s eyes. He cried, the horrible truth seeping into his mind. Lance McClain had been dead for over a month, and Keith was reading his journals to try and to get to know him. Now more than ever he regretted not getting to know him while he was alive. Why? Well the flower petals he was still coughing up made it pretty evident.
He had fallen in love with Lance McClain.

No one asked for it but here it is :) Klance angst fanfic
Warnings: ANGST, SO MUCH ANGST. (why did I do this to myself? I have no idea. I’m clearly a sadist that loves to see her son Keith suffer. ( : yes I hate myself, thanks for asking lol. I’ll be in my grave after writing this byeeee)
What is and What Should’ve Been
“Keith, Lance is dead.” Allura told him those words exactly a week ago and he still couldn’t believe it. Keith hadn’t left his room since. There was a pile of uneaten food rotting outside his room.
Stupid idiot! Keith thought angrily. Why did he have to get into danger like that?
He had risked his life to save his fellow paladins, to save Keith. Keith had been pinned under a piece of scrap metal and Lance freed him before he got blasted by a beam of blue light, killed by his own lion turned against him.
That made it hurt worse for Keith. That blast was meant for him, not Lance. He’s the one who should be dead right now. Keith sat vigil for Lance for three days before the week the funeral would take place. Everyone needed time to grieve and process what happened, as well as time for the pods to store his memories in the castle.
Keith slams his fist down on the floor of his room, his head comes next. Pain shoots up his body but he doesn’t feel it, not really. Everything is numb. Tears run down his cheeks but he doesn’t wipe them away, he just lets them fall to the floor. Lance was an arrogant tool but…but he was my arrogant tool. Keith thought sadly. He’d never gotten a chance to say it. It was always “do it later” or “now’s not a good time”, or “there’s too many people around”. Keith could never get Lance away from everyone to speak to him alone.
Suddenly there’s a whoosh sound and a pod comes in behind a wall in Keith’s room. He didn’t even know that part of the wall could open. The Altean castle was always surprising him. He approached the pod and at once was overwhelmed by memories.
“It’s Lance,”
“Oh that’s right you’re a cargo pilot.”
The three of them saving Shiro that very first time Keith formally met Lance.
“We do make a good team”
The first time Keith and Lance actually worked as a team.
All the times Keith gets made fun of by Lance for being short or called “mullet head” or the time Lance wanted to stick Keith in a worm hole.
The bonding moment where Keith held hurt Lance in his arms. And he didn’t remember it, the bastard.
All the competition, the rivalry. It was fun, teasing Lance like that. Now he never would again. Throughout everything the pair had been through, throughout everything all the paladins went through, Keith had never told Lance how he truly felt. Now it was too late. He could have Lance’s memories, but he wasn’t obtained before he died, so his very being and essence couldn’t be stored in the castle-ship.
When the day of the funeral finally came, everyone had already been grieving when Keith emerged from his room. Pidge was crying softly into Shiro’s stomach. Next to them, Hunk was sobbing uncontrollably, and Coran did his best to calm the loudly weeping paladin. Allura and Coran wore their emotions on their sleeves and Shiro was oddly quiet, tears in his eyes. Keith bet everything Shiro would find a way to blame this on his poor leadership, but there was nothing Shiro could’ve done to stop Lance from being so strong-willed and arrogant enough to go try to save his fellow paladin. Keith blamed himself for being so hot-headed and putting Lance in a situation where he needed to save him in the first place. Normally it was Keith who had to save Lance in battle, not the other way around. He was protecting you, you’re a part of the team, you always have been Keith, selfish at first or not.
Shiro’s words sounded off in his head and deep inside himself Keith knew that Lance’s death was none of their faults but Zarkon’s. Keith vowed to get revenge on his friend’s death. He felt a hand on his shoulder and looked up to see Shiro. He nodded at Shiro, as he led the others out of the room, as if on cue.
Without anyone else in the room, Keith couldn’t keep himself contained anymore. He broke down on top of the burial pod, tears gushing, angry fists pounding, guilt throbbing like an infected stab wound, festering within him.
“I should’ve…I should’ve told you Lance. I should’ve told you something, anything. I should’ve told you…” Keith paused. Was there any point of saying it now? Now that Lance was dead? Keith wished with everything he had to take Lance’s place. If admitting it now would bring him back…
But it wouldn’t. Yet Keith knew he had to. He had to admit it to himself if to no one else, if for no one else’s benefit.
“I should’ve told you I loved you…” He spoke softly in the direction of the pod, trailing off as tears overwhelmed his vision. He pressed a button on the side of the pod, placed a gentle kiss on Lance’s forehead and pressed the button again, allowing the pod screen to slide back up.
“I love you Lance.” His words were more of a declaration now. “Did you hear me Lance? I said, I love you. I wish you’d come back to me. I love you.”
But only silence met his words. (Please send me feedback on this or any fanfic I write. Always ready to hear it :) )

Gone Is the Light of Your Palm
...
I’m not sure I should even post this.
I’ll not lie. This is an EXTREMELY UNCOMFORTABLE READ.
It was so draining, physically, emotionally, just to write it. It’s... honestly? It’s the single most depressing thing I’ve ever written to date. I always love to write angst, but... I didn’t even fully enjoy writing this.
It started out as an image in my head, an interesting concept, innocent enough angst, just like every other fic. But then... it got dark. It got EXTREMELY DARK. And I’m not usually disturbed by my own writing, but this...
I think it’s because I wrote a little too close to my own heart. I may have self-projected too much, made too many parallels to my real life, and written it based off of fresh wounds...
Just to be perfectly clear, I’m referring to the suicidal topic of this fic. Now, I’ve never actually lost family or a friend to suicide, but in light of Chester Bennington’s recent suicide... yeah, that’s really the first time suicide’s ever directly taken something from my life. And... I think this fic is honestly just me venting about it, projecting on parallel characters from Voltron.
I’m extremely conflicted about posting this fic, and I fear I may receive some serious flame for it. I don’t really blame people. I already know there are many people who are distraught about the way Shiro was treated this season, believe me, my best friend @lenarart wept right next to me after watching 3.5, and I know how much he means to various fans.
Sometimes, writers can’t control their visions. This is the first time it’s gotten so out of hand for me, that writing it actually made me feel physically sick. I just... don’t know how I lost control so completely...
This isn’t my first fanfic. Maybe it’s the first one I’ve posted online, but I’ve written fanfic for Avatar, Korra, and my own original writing. Angst is my specialty. I would not consider this your average angst AT ALL. If this leaves a bad taste in your mouth afterwords, don’t hesitate to unfollow me. I’ve only got, like, ten of ‘em, anyway. Follower count doesn’t matter that much to me.
Just... be safe. Read at your own risk. This contains disturbing imagery, possible reminiscent of that of panic attacks, I’m not sure. And again, there is pretty clearly implied suicide.
This is not a fluffy Klance fic. This is not hurt/comfort Shallura. This is not background Hunay.
This is something so deeply real and personal for me, I’ve truly left myself horrified at my own work.
I don’t expect you to enjoy.

Pidge stepped down from the pod, along with several other Olkari. She let them pass by her, unwilling to look up, almost unwilling to be here at all. She already wanted to go back to Olkarion, just hide in the city, surround herself with her silent garden plants. She’d rather be surrounded by silence than the loud, loud faces.
Begrudgingly, Pidge looked up. The first face she saw was Hunk’s. He was facing her head-on. His countenance was loud. So, so loud… louder than she’d ever seen it. The Guardian of the Forest sensed a pungent sting in her heart at the sight of solid, begging tears in the bigger paladin’s eyes. Hunk refused to let them go, though, the strong anchor that he was.
Pidge’s lips wobbled. The small paladin went forth to hug Hunk unabashedly. She could still barely wrap her arms around him, but she wasn’t about to let physical reality stop her from trying to crush around Hunk’s waist, encircle him totally, until she squeezed all his sorrow out, along with banishing her own. Hunk’s arms reciprocated accordingly, reaching down to Pidge’s back. Pidge felt something thick and wet plop on top of her head, and she dared not to mention it to her friend whom she was trying so desperately to crush.
When the two finally parted, Hunk’s hands remained on top of Pidge’s shoulders. Hunk then turned and let one arm rest across her shoulders as he led her up to the rest of the funeral party.
God, why is everyone’s faces so loud?
Coran’s expression mumbled. It mumbled of not understanding, of a thirst for answers. So say we all. He looked so tired. The older Altean’s eyes were half-lidded, and his mouth hung open in a zombielike fashion. When he blinked, he did it too slowly. The man was half-alive. Everything about him was just… reduced to half of what it used to be. Except for his spontaneous cheerfulness; that was just gone. Pidge wanted nothing more than to go to him, to hug the pain away like she’d attempted to do with Hunk. But she worried that if she did, she might just snap the old man in two. Coran’s physical body was the only part of him still whole; Pidge couldn’t take that away.
Hunk escorted Pidge up to her brother. Pidge could understand every word his face was saying. The grey words lining every crease on his face, and the agonizing sympathy his face screamed at his sister. Don’t say that. She wanted to throw back all that sympathy in his face. She was the one who should be screaming comfort at him from her eyebrows, tightly knitted together. She should be boring her slightly cold amber eyes into his to give him the life to carry on. Pidge could almost laugh when she realized her and Matt’s expressions toward each other were complete mirror images, each trying to lift the other back into survival from this valley.
Hunk and Matt, too, traded solemn, supportive expressions, then Hunk gave Pidge’s shoulder as strong a squeeze as he could [it held a weakness uncharacteristic of Hunk] before grimly sauntering over to someone else in the crowd of mourners.
Pidge and Matt wandered over to the front of the congregation, meeting Lance and Keith. Quickly, even more quickly, Pidge’s blood was draining from her veins, leaving them cold. The noise was so much… Seeing those two together was deafening. Lance gave Pidge a smile. The Green Paladin could throw up. She barely registered Matt wrapping an arm around her shoulders as Hunk just had, but it must have prevented her from passing out on the spot. Pidge took a deep breath and gave Lance a weak smile back. After a moment of this, they both glanced sideways at Keith. He was like a marble tombstone. His eyes were wide open, shaking, and his pupils were pinpricks. Pidge could detect nothing but static. Loud static. Piercing static. She felt like her ears were going to bleed. But seeing Keith brought about a new kind of pain in Pidge: the pain of helplessness. Because there was nothing she could do to put a stop to the static. Lance eventually looked back at Pidge, then came forth and gave her a light hug. Pidge hugged back; somehow, though Lance’s hugs were made of water, they never failed to help her breathe. She was pulled back from the edge of insanity.
When they pulled back, they noticed her stepping up onto the podium to speak. She had left the twins with Hunk, whom had come over to take them from her arms. Thank god they were too young for this noise.
Allura took center stage on the podium. Coran stood on the ground, facing the audience, ever the protective sentinel for her, even though everyone here felt death infecting their very beings.
Pidge took in a deep breath of life through her nose, then let it go.
Then Allura spoke.
“Hello, everyone.”
Pidge’s eardrums were broken. That couldn’t have been Allura. That was not the Allura who used to shatter her ears with hope every word she said. That wasn’t her Queen Allura.
This was the voice of a broken old woman. Her voice sounded like sandpaper rubbed on ashy gravel. She stood as tall as she could on the podium, and normally, a pregnant belly would not have hindered her one bit, but her shoulders carried new life on top of a fresh, sinking death. A death so terrible and oppressive that the whole universe could feel it. This was the voice of no queen. This was the silent sound of someone gargling a dead heart in their throat.
The silence from Allura spoke of heroic deeds. Selfless actions. Persevering and inspiring in the face of insurmountable odds. Defying, no, spitting in the face of the impossible. Spending a year in hell, and coming back to still see hope and good in the broken universe that everyone else thought of as not worth saving. Losing so many essential pieces and having them warped and replaced with something demonic, but still using that vile instrument for something pure. A guiding light to so many, a light that never gave up shining on anyone, no matter how much the void tried to stamp it all out. Just take that hand, that glorious light, and you were already halfway to heaven. The first king of New Altea, the Savior of the Universe, the last Champion…
“Takashi Shirogane, the Black Paladin.”
Pidge heard a flicker as Keith woke up. His eyes could focus now. The static diminished. The Red Paladin could finally see. And it was breaking him apart like glass cracking in the fire.
Meanwhile, Pidge was going numb.
“None of us wanted to be here for a very…”
~ ~
“…very long time. We certainly never expected to be here under these circumstances. But I…”
~
“…understand more than many that he was in so much pain. It…”
~
Allura kept taking huge gulps of air between words, very unlike her when giving a speech. And they were so loud.
“…pains me to realize… ~ …that I will have to raise our… ~ …children alone. And I’m far from the only person who… ~ ~ ~”
Coran looked at Allura worriedly.
“…lost him,” Allura finally managed. Keith blinked, tender tears slipping down his cheeks for the first time. “But just because this life became too much for him, it does not… ~ …mean that we must only think of him as a tragedy.”
Matt’s eyes were slowly drowning with tears, and every paladin’s face turned up directly at the Queen.
“Far from it!” Allura managed to inflect a tiny bit more optimistically. “Everyone’s life is a ride of ups and downs. We can overcome every valley, and fly upon every high! Coping with any trauma, any grief…” Pidge’s ears twitched. She was starting to hear the real Allura again. “…is not impossible. All our hearts are heavy here and now, but… we are not done fighting. We either count on our friends,” the paladins saw that pink glint in Allura’s eyes, “our families,” Coran almost looked like he was smiling, “strangers, even,” the Olkari, Shay and the Balmerans, Slav, and the other members of the crowd lifted slightly, “even the stardust can keep us company.” Allura’s voice wobbled a bit on that last word. “The future is ahead- the future Takashi gave us. We will make the most of it, and make him proud from wherever he is watching.”
Pidge witnessed the casket carriers lower Shiro down, his body made beautiful and broken one last time, exposing all his perfect flaws and damn beautiful tarnishes, yes, even the burn that he ended his life with, and she almost thinks she can hear a melody in this noise.
Lance, Keith, Matt, Pidge, Coran, Allura, Hunk. They stood in a straight line facing Shiro’s grave. Their shoulders were all perfectly squared off. Like seven sentries greeting visitors to the grave.
Breathe.
No one speaks.
Breathe.
Grey clouds and the empty, flat, wind-blown grassland expand around them to reemphasize how alone they are.
Just breathe, Katie.
The sound synthesizer starts playing behind her.
Go. Be great.
The melody from before picks up.
“Should have stayed… were the signs I ignored.
Can I help you not to hurt anymore?”
Lance let his lips go slack, closing his eyes. Keith sniffled, breathing strained.
“We saw brilliance when the world was asleep.”
Allura, now holding her twins, let her warriorlike facade down for now. Instead, she looked like an ocean.
“There are things that we can have, but can’t keep.”
Coran’s breathing had to be cold, meticulously calculated, mechanical. Controlled.
“If they say,”
Katie’s voice wavers at these lines, but she won’t let up.
“Who cares if one more light goes out
In a sky of a million stars?
It flickers, flickers.
Who cares when someone’s time runs out
If a moment is all we are?”
Her diaphragm stings like acidic ice. She’s unfazed.
“We’re quicker, quicker.
Who cares if one more light goes out?
Well, I do.”
Katie knew these next lines were going to hurt. She just had to stay alive. Just survive.
You can do this. For Shiro.
“The reminder...”
That already felt like a javelin through the stomach.
“…pulled the floor, from your feet.”
It was unclear whether Hunk’s arm had spread the trembling to Allura’s shoulders, or if it was the other way around.
Katie braced her voice for the next lines.
“In the kitchen… one more chair than you need.”
Keith sobbed. He cracked and shattered and splintered and combusted and quaked and convulsed and he wept. Right into the crook of Lance’s neck, as a crying Matt hung his head and clasped Keith’s closest shoulder.
“Oooh...”
Katie’s stance had been stock still throughout the entire song so far. Feet spread, unshakable, shoulders tensed and squared, hands tight but open at her sides. This was where that would all change.
“And you’re angry… and you should be…
It’s not fair…”
Hands became claws.
“Just ’cause you can’t see it…”
Voice cold iron.
“…doesn’t mean it…”
Melody a warsong.
“Isn’t there, if they say,
Who cares if one more light goes out,
In a sky of a million stars?
It flickers, flickers.
Who cares when someone’s time runs out,
If a moment is all we are?!
We’re quicker, quicker-
Who cares if one more light goes out,
Well, I do.”
Finally, the instrumental break. Katie needed to surface after drowning. She breathed, albeit shallowly. She could sense the mutual pain around her. Her fists clenched so tight, she could have broken someone’s neck. Katie realized she had doubled over, hinged at the hips, knees slightly bent, and she tore her vocal chords asunder when she preached,
“I DO!!!”
A sob of an inhale, and,
“If they say,”
The last lines sounded like shit as she wept them out.
“Who cares if one more light goes out,
In a sky of a million stars…
It flickers. Flickers…
Who cares when someone’s… time runs out.
If a moment is all we are?!
We’re quicker, quicker!
Who care if one more light goes out...”
~
“Well, I do…”
“…I do.” Gentle, like a proud breath on the wing.

Klance fic: Coming Home
Chapter one of my series “It took six years”
Lance adjusted his grip on his cane, fist clenching so hard his knuckles turned white. Keith stood beside him and waited as Lance refused to move forward. After six years, away, he was finally home.
His house looked just the same and he could hear voices from inside, some he recognized, and some he didn’t. His chest ached with how badly he wanted to see his family again, but it had been six years and everything was different.
“What do I tell them?”
Keith placed a comforting hand on his husband’s waist.
“I don’t know. We can stick to the story the garrison gave us. We were sent out on an urgent mission and went missing. We lost all communications with command but completed our mission and came home. All other details are classified. No mention of aliens or going off planet. We were all pilots.”
Lance nodded. Once they had defeated Zarkon and saved the universe they’d finally returned home, but had gotten strict instructions from the garrison to keep all details quiet. No one could know about aliens or the fact that earth was almost destroyed.
Lance nodded, swallowing his anxiety as he smoothed his Garrison uniform.
“Okay.” He took Keith’s hand, squeezing it tight as he lifted his cane with the other, dragging his bad leg with him as they approached the door.
Keith looked at Lance one more time, silently asking if he was ready. Lance nodded and Keith knocked.
A happy voice called out from inside. “Coming!” The woman had a thick accent and Keith heard Lance’s breath hitch. Then the door opened and there was his mother. The familiar warm eyes and round face, that smile that Lance had known since birth melting into shock.
She stared at her son, hands coming forward to reach for him as she whispered in awe.
“Lance? Es que tú?”
Is that you?
Lance could barely see through his tears. He choked on a sob as he nodded.
“Sí mamá. Soy yo, estoy en casa.”
Yes mama. It’s me, I’m home
The woman flung herself into Lance’s arms and Lance hugged her back fiercely. Keith let go of his hand to take his waist instead, holding him up so that he could use both arms to hug his mother, leaving his cane waiting by his side.
Keith felt his chest growing tight, watching his husband finally reunite with the family he had missed for so long. Lance and his mother were crying loudly and she finally released him to take his face in her hands.
He had grown up since she last saw him and it showed. His jaw was stronger as were the set of his shoulders and he’d put on muscle which was evident in his lean frame. The woman traced a thumb over his skin, meeting the roughness of his stubble.
She spoke English now, her thick accent still wobbly with emotion. “My heart has been broken for six long years and you’re finally home. Dios, you’re so big and- oh, what have they done to you?”
She looked down at his hand now back on his cane, his other clutching her arm. He looked down at his bad leg. The scars were covered by his clothes, and he was glad she didn’t have to see them.
“I’m a little broken, Mama. But I won’t ever leave again. I promise.”
Her face crumpled once more and she took her son in her arms. When she let go she wiped her eyes and finally looked at Keith, seeming to only just notice his presence.
“Hijo, who’s this?” Keith looked to Lance, his husband raising his eyebrow just a little, in question. Keith nodded and Lance gave a small smile in return. It might be a little too soon to spring the whole ‘I’m married to a man’ thing after just coming home.
Lance wiped his face with a shaky hand as he introduced him.
“This is Keith, he was with me on our mission for the last six years. He’s saved my life more times than I can count.”
Lance’s mother smiled and threw her arms around a surprised Keith.
“Thank you for bringing my son home.”
Keith brought his arms up to hug her back. Lance was right, her hugs were amazing.
“You’re welcome, Mrs McLain.”
“Call me Maria.”
She let him go and took Lance’s hand again, beaming at him as she pulled them both inside.
“You have to see everyone and-Oh, I’ll have to call your father. He’ll be so happy to see you. Come inside, I’ll find everyone.”
Lance limped into the house, Keith beside him as they came to a stop at a small table in the living room. Lance looked down at it, eyebrows furrowed as he touched the picture frame resting there. It was a shrine. For him.
Photographs and candles were placed on a white cloth, wilted flowers dropping petals onto the floor.
Lance’s mother put a hand on his shoulder.
“They told us you were dead. That garrison said you went missing with some others and they couldn’t recover your bodies. I mourned my baby, we all did. I lit a candle for you every day, mi hijo. Everyday. You have to tell me what happened, but first you need to see everyone.”
Lance nodded and watched her run through the house, calling for the rest of the family.
Keith looked down at the shrine and felt a longing he hadn’t felt in years. They were finally free from Zarkons rule and he had no family to go home to. Team Voltron was his family. No one would have even noticed he was missing. No one mourned him.
His thoughts were broken by Lance’s quiet voice.
“I’m glad you’re here with me. I don’t think I could have done this on my own.”
Keith smiled at him. Lance always knew what to say. He smiled at his favourite idiot and took his hand to kiss his knuckles.
“Your mum’s nice.”
Lance nodded and let out a small laugh.
“I guess she’s your mother in law now.”
Keith didn’t have time to properly absorb that information before the room was full of people. Lance’s siblings and nephews and nieces all crowding in and demanding to hug him.
Lance hugged each one, crying again as they all remarked at how much had changed. Lance’s family was much bigger than it was when he left and a small group of children crowded around his legs for hugs with their tio Lance. Maria fret over her returned son, asking everyone to be careful with him.
Keith usually would have felt awkward or left out in this situation but he knew how much it meant to Lance so he held his waist to keep him standing through all the hugs. He was a part of this giant family now and the thought was immense and welcome. Lance had told him about everyone. His older sister Sofia and his big brother Tomas as well as the youngest twins Dante and Mateo.
Tomas held his little brother by the shoulders as he looked him up and down, eyes full of tears.
“They told us you died. We had a funeral. We buried an empty coffin and they paid Ma and Dad to be quiet about it and sent us a shitty flag. What the hell happened? Why were you gone so long?”
Lance felt sick at the thought of some garrison official coming to his door to tell his parents he’d died. His family mourned him for six years and he was finally back and he couldn’t even tell them the truth.
“I’ll explain everything when dad gets home.”
Ten minutes later the door swung open and Lance’s father stepped through. He froze in the doorway at the sight of his formally dead son in the middle of the room. Lance took his cane and limped over to him, standing up straight and raising his hand in a salute. His father didn’t return the gesture, only surged towards him and scooped him into his arms.
“I can’t believe it. You’re home. My boy is back.”
Lance hugged him back, eyes scrunched shut.
“I missed you all so much. I’m so sorry I didn’t come back sooner.”
Lance was released and his father slapped a hand on his back.
“Look at you. You’ve grown up. Come sit down, tell us everything.”
Keith took Lance’s arm again as he helped him limp to the kitchen where everyone took a seat at the table. Usually Lance was okay just using his cane but his bad leg was protesting all the excitement and he was grateful for the help that his husband provided.
Keith sat beside him at the table as everyone sat eagerly waiting an explanation.
Lance wasn’t sure how to word everything. He didn’t want to lie but he also needed to keep his family safe from the truth. They would already worry if he told them he had been fighting a war, telling them he fought a war in space, against aliens would be much worse and take a lot more explaining. So, he went with the story the garrison gave him.
“There was an attack on the garrison six years ago, and they needed people to fight. It’s … the details are classified so I can’t tell you where we were or who we were fighting but… we went to war. It was a small team, Keith was with me as well as a few others. We lost communication with the garrison early on and we couldn’t make it back until the mission was over. I wanted to tell you, I wanted to come home so badly but…we couldn’t.”
Maria nodded and squeezed her husband’s hand, smiling from where they sat beside Lance.
“You’re home now. Everything is okay.”
Tomas looked both horrified and amazed at the thought of his little brother being a soldier.
“You…fought in a war?”
Lance nodded, a small smile lighting his face.
“Yeah. It took a while but…we won.”
Lance’s father, Raphael, gestured to the cane sitting beside his son.
“And that’s why…?” he wasn’t sure how to phrase it. Everyone in the room went quiet and Lance looked over at Keith before speaking.
“There was a mission about six months ago, it went badly. We were in enemy territory and completely outnumbered. The whole team was trapped with no means of escape and no back up coming.”
He looked at Keith, sitting beside him with a sad frown.
“Keith still hasn’t really forgiven me for what happened.”
Everyone looked to the red paladin as he shook his head.
“Because it was the stupidest thing you’ve ever done.” He looked out to the table to people awaiting the story and sighed.
“Lance decided that the only option was to surrender. So, he stood with his hands up and walked right over to the enemy. He made sure they thought he was the only one there, so that the rest of us wouldn’t be caught.”
Lance watched Keith talk, hating the sad tone, and idly massaged his bad leg.
“We had one grenade, made from scrap by our mechanic, and the plan was to throw it into the tunnel with the soldiers. But it went south quickly and Lance couldn’t get out in time. He blew it up while still inside.”
There was a chorus of gasps as Lance looked embarrassed and Maria reached out to smack Lance on the shoulder, gripping his arm in her hands in worry.
“No, Hijo! ¿por qué harías eso?”
No, son! Why would you do that?
Lance patted his mother’s hand as she squeezed his shoulder.
“I’m fine, Ma, calm down.”
She smacked at his arm again, face pinched in worry as if she didn’t know if he made it out of the explosion alive or not.
“No, no eres. Now shh and let me hear Keith.”
No, you aren’t.
Keith took a breath as he looked at Lance. That mission had been so bad. He had never been so afraid in his life.
“The enemy were all dead but Lance was trapped under there with them. It took two days to dig him out and it was touch and go for a while. We weren’t sure if he was going to make it and even after that we weren’t sure if we would be able to save his leg. It had been crushed under the rubble and we had a really good medic and he did all he could but... some of the nerves couldn’t be fixed.”
Lance rubbed Keith’s shoulder, remembering how horrible those few weeks were after the accident. Keith hadn’t left his side and it had been a tough recovery period for everyone.
Keith swallowed and kept talking, looking at Maria and Raphael.
“It took four weeks for him to heal and walk again but he’ll always need the cane. The damage is irreversible. I’m sorry.”
Everyone wore the same look of grief and shock on their faces but Lance took Keith’s hand and leant forward to kiss his sad mouth.
“Hey, I’m okay. I’m here, everything’s fine.”
Keith was very aware that Lance had just kissed him in front of his entire family and kept his face low as everyone looked at their joined hands and noticed the matching wedding bands.
Sofia spoke first, her husband sitting with her as her children played at her feet.
“Are you two...?”
Lance looked at Keith and smiled, squeezing his hand in pride. Truthfully, he wasn’t sure how his family would react but he loved Keith more than anything and while he couldn’t be truthful about where they’d been he could tell them about this.
“Keith and I are married.”
He held Keith’s gaze long enough to see the love and happiness in his eyes at the words, before turning to his family. Thankfully they were smiling.
Maria threw her hands up and reached for the two men.
“Mi hijo es casado! Oh, mis hijos, qué feliz estoy!”
My son is married! Oh, my boys, I'm so happy!
More hugs were exchanged, this time with Keith included, and everyone was asking questions again.
“How did you guys meet?”
“When did you get married?”
“How did you have a wedding in the middle of a war?”
Lance was beaming as he answered them and Keith watched his husband’s eyes light up.
“I knew him at the garrison but we didn’t really meet properly until we got sent on the mission together. We didn’t really get along at first-“
Keith laughed and interrupted.
“No, you didn’t like me. I was apathetic towards you until you pissed me off.”
Lance waved a hand.
“Yeah whatever, we weren’t that close at first but traveling around and fighting battles with only the same six people to keep you company makes for fast forming friendships. Keith and I ended up getting close and I realized I liked his dumb mullet head for some reason.”
Everyone looked a little confused at the mention of a mullet since Keith’s hair had grown out and was more shoulder length now. He had it tied into a bun and Lance looped a finger into a strand of hair as if fell free, playing with it teasingly before Keith tucked it back behind his ear.
“Yeah, he used to have a mullet but he grew it out. It’s like he’s allergic to haircuts.”
Keith laughed and bumped his shoulder against Lance’s.
“And his lame pickup lines worked for some stupid reason and I couldn’t stop thinking about him. He asked me out in the middle of a mission and we just ended up together. I’m not even really sure how it happened.”
He looked at Lance with a smile, his voice wistful and happy. Sofia and Maria both aww’ed and Lance continued with the story.
“Keith helped me recover from the tunnel explosion and when I was mostly on my feet again he gave this long sappy speech and proposed. It was so cute.”
He leant forward and rubbed his nose against Keith’s, smiling like the idiot in love that he was. Keith picked up the story.
“It wasn’t really a legal marriage since we couldn’t sign any papers or anything with the whole ‘no one knows we’re alive’ thing. But we went to a small village where they have a beautiful tradition. They mate for life in their culture so the ceremony was less, a legal commitment, and more a bonding of souls. They believe everyone has someone who’s soul fits perfectly with theirs and for me that’s Lance. I don’t want anyone else.”
Lance blushed and nodded. “It’s a bond that can never be broken. Now that we’re back we’ll have to have another wedding here. One that legally makes us husbands.” He turned to his parents as his thumb rubbed over the back of Keith’s hand.
“Oh, I should probably tell you. I’m Lance Kogane now.”
Keith pressed a kiss to Lance’s cheek.
“My parents died when I was young and I don’t have any other family so Lance offered to take my name so that my family can continue.” The two men looked at each other, and everyone in the room could see how much they loved one another.
Maria looked as though she were about to cry.
“That’s my sweet boy. I’m so proud of you.”
Lance rolled his eyes as his mother fret over him, fixing his collar and rearranging his hair, truthfully, he loved it. He had missed his family so much and it was almost overwhelming to be home again.
Keith could see he was getting worn out from all the excitement and his bad leg was acting up.
“How about we give everyone some time to process everything. Lance could do with some rest and there’s a lot for everyone to take in.”
Everyone looked tired and Tomas nodded.
“Sure, I’ll show you to the guest room.”
Keith stood from the table and helped Lance stand, trying to ignore the way everyone watched. Lance winced but held in any noise of pain as he got to his feet, his bad leg weak and heavy as he hobbled with his cane. He tried to keep his back straight but it didn’t make a difference to how obviously bad his limp was.
He swallowed his embarrassment and squeezed Keith’s hand. He’d gotten used to it, they would too.
They were lead down a hall to a small room, Tomas excusing himself to collect their bags from the car. Keith helped Lance sit down on the bed and knelt to tug his shoes off.
“You okay?”
Keith nodded and got Lance settled in bed, taking his jacket and cane.
“Yeah, your family’s nice. And I’ve always wanted to know where you grew up.”
Lance took his husbands hand as he lay in bed, Keith sitting beside him.
“They’re your family too now. It might be a lot to take in at first but they like you. I can tell.”
Keith smiled and leant down for a kiss.
“Thanks. Now get some sleep.”
(there will be more and the series will include fics of the stories keith was telling like when lance got hurt as well as their wedding. I would reeeeallly love to know what you think of this so please give me some feedback. As usual this and all my fics can be found on fanfiction.net and ao3 with the same author name as my url on here.)
