Vancouver and Chilliwack April 2003
22 - 24 April 2003
Hi everyone! Â This weekend 20 years ago, I visited Vancouver, BC, Canada, for the second time. Â I spent two nights in Vancouver's Davie district, sort of west of downtown Vancouver. Â It was also the first time I rented a car on my own, in a foreign country.
I flew on Friday 22nd April from SFO airport's Terminal 3 by United Airlines. Â I had booked a first class seat with a 500 mile coupon. Â The flight took off about 5 PM nonstop to Vancouver. Â I think I arrived about 8 PM. Â When I landed, it was in the US terminal where prechecks going back take place. Â I had to go through Canadian customs. Â They asked their nosy questions similar to the last time I was there, April 2002. Â I was admitted into Canada, then I went to baggage claim and retrieved my suitcase. Â I went through the "Nothing to declare" green lane.
Once I retrieved my suitcase, I went to the Hertz car rental desk. Â They had my car ready. Â It was a 2003 Oldsmobile Alero (in Europe this was sold as the Chevrolet Alero). Â This one had a 3.4 liter V6 engine, 4 speed automatic transmission, and an AM/FM/CD player radio. Â I did not really need a map for the most part, as I had been to the youth hostel on Thurlow and Burnaby Streets once before. Â Parking it would be a challenge, but the hospital nearby had parking. Â
I drove up Grant McConachie Way to Granville Street. Â After Granville Island, BC route 99 split off into Howe and Seymour Streets. Â I went northeast on Seymour Street, to Davie Street and turned left. Â I went to Thurlow Street and turned left, then turned onto Burnaby Street. Â Back then, there was no plan to build what is known as the Canada Line. Â I noticed that some of the signals, that had flashing green signals, which meant mainly the same thing as a steady green. Â When the light was to change, there would be four seconds of steady green before the light went yellow. Â When the red cycle was over, the light would flash green again and repeat the cycle as necessary. Â That is something that happens in British Columbia, I have not seen that in other provinces in Canada.
I checked into the hostel, and deposited my bags in my room. Â I had a single room, right next to the elevator. Â My room was not ensuite, there was a shared bathroom down the hall. Â I had to park the car at St. Paul's Hospital. Â The car park allowed long term parking, so it was okay to park there overnight. Â Parking in Vancouver is much more difficult that most cities in the USA. Â I think it was about $20 US to park for two nights. Â Once I parked the car, I walked to Thurlow Street, then Davie, and to Bute Street. Â I remembered Hamburger Mary's (now it is called Mary's on Davie), so I went there. Â I thought about going to Denny's but I passed on that. Â In Canada, the apostrophe of Denny's is the red maple leaf. Â McDonald's has something similar in its corporate logo, with a red leaf in the center. Â I ordered a large hamburger but was unable to eat it all for some reason. Â I left enough fries as well. Â The waiter gave me a hinge container, I think a 9 by 6 by 3 inches (22 by 15 by 8 cm) and I took my food to the hostel. Â The hostel had a communal walk-in refrigerator, and they provided a permanent marker to mark whose food belonged to whom, and what their checkout date was. Â If there was food in the refrigerator and the guest had already checked out, it was put on a special rack for "free food". Â The hostel did not provide breakfast back then, so people had to cook their own. Â After I went to my room, I went to sleep. Â It was not high season, so it was fairly easy to fall asleep.
On Saturday 23rd April, I woke up, took a shower, went down to the kitchen to collect my hamburger and fries, then walked to the hospital to get the car. Â I stopped at a Blenz coffee shop, to get some coffee. Â Blenz is a coffee chain in British Columbia similar to Starbuck's, has few, if any, locations outside of British Columbia. Â I drove along Davie Street to Denman Street, up BC route 99 to Stanley Park Drive and the totem poles. Â The previous year, 2002, I had visited the Indigenous Art Museum at University of British Columbia where they had a massive collection of totem poles. Â The ones at Stanley Park were okay, not particularly spectactular. Â I liked the view of the Vancouver skyline better. Â I was able to see Canada Place across the harbor. Â The weather was nice then. Â I bought a few gifts for my family at the gift shop. Â I finished my hamburger, fries and coffee before driving onwards.
After leaving Stanley Park on the north side of the island, I went north on the Lions Gate Bridge to North Vancouver. Â I ended up in the Capilano Indian Reserve. Â I turned right on Marine Drive and drove east on Third Street and eventually Main Street. Â I crossed back into Vancouver by the Trans Canada Highway route 1 which went through Burnaby and Abbotsford. Â The speed limit was 100 km/h. Â All highway distances were in metric. Â After Abbotsford, the speed limit increased to 110 km/h. Â I planned to go only as far as Chilliwack. Â Chilliwack was named from the indigenous word Ts'elxweyeqw. Â The highway was very nice. Â I played a CD in the CD player. Â It was mostly of music I had recorded from November 2002, including a few German songs. Â It felt odd to play German music in Canada. Â
Once I arrived in Chilliwack, it looked very similar to a small town in the USA, with the main difference being, instead of the Stars and Stripes, it was two red rectangles, and a big red maple leaf on top of the white rectangle. Â I stopped at the McDonald's on Luckakuck Way, and ordered a hamburger and a small Coke. Â The hamburger tasted just like the ones I had in the USA. Â I drove to downtown Chilliwack and wanted to see the murals. Â One of them stood out to me and it was the decades from 1930 to 1990 or so.
About 2 PM, I drove west on the Trans Canada highway to Vancouver, turning off at Hastings and driving on to St. Paul's Hospital to park again. Â I walked to the hostel and asked for a day pass. Â They sold me one for $8.00. Â I went to the Shoppers Drug Mart, nearby and bought a 2 liter bottle of Sprite Ice. Â Sprite Ice is basically Sprite with mint flavoring. Â I rode on the line 6 to Seymour Street, transferred to the line 4 or line 7, and went to the Granville Skytrain station. Â Back then, Skytrain did not have fare gates. Â Skytrain stations Granville and Burrard, both have the eastbound platform on the lower level and westbound platform at the upper level. Â I took the Skytrain to Gastown, which would require a walk from the Waterfront station. Â I walked a few blocks along Water Street to the whistling steam clock. Â I watched the clock strike 3 PM. Â I wish at the time, that I had a working video camera. Â That would not happen until a year later. Â
I walked to the Victory Square Cenotaph at Victory Square, and drank some of the Sprite Ice from the bottle that I had in my bag. Â I walked down Cambie Street and BC route 1A to the Stadium-Chinatown Skytrain station. Â I took the Millenium Line to Loughheed Town Center. Â I remember the Millenium line only went as far as Braid, but on 31st August, the line was expanded to Commercial/Broadway. Â I spent about an hour in the Town Center. Â It was not much more different than the average shopping mall in the USA. Â Â
Due to its location, it was hard to accurately keep track of time, and the sun set later than in California. Â I took the Skytrain from Loughheed Town Center to Granville, took a bus to Robson Street and then fou a place to eat for supper. Â It was a Japanese curry restaurant. Â I ordered a donkatsu curry with udon noodles. Â It tasted excellent. Â I had a bubble tea, I think, matcha flavored. Â Then I walked back to the hostel.
When I was at the hostel, I took my radio and recorded some music. Â The radio I had was not the Aiwa HS-JS 479 that I brought the previous year, but it was a portable one with digital tuning and 2 inch / 5 cm speakers. Â Its cassette playback had the "Q-Sound" function to play prerecorded cassettes. Â I recorded some French and also some English programming. Â On one of the French stations, I recorded "Tous les palmiers" by the Quebec band Beau Dommage, and "Un homme et une femme" by some unknown duo, definitely not the original ones from the 1960s, definitely not Mireille Mathieu either. Â I went to bed soon after that.
Sunday the 24th April, I had to wake up and get breakfast. Â I had a coffee and pastry at Blenz Coffee on Davie Street. Â Then I checked out of the hostel, took my luggage to the car, and drove south on Granville Road to the airport. Â However there was one problem. Â I needed to fill up the tank, and I was not able to find a reliable gas station. Â I had to drive to Richmond, just a little south of the airport, to find some place that sold gas. Â Gas in Canada is more expensive than it is in the USA, and is sold by the liter. Â I drove along Number 2 Road, then Francis Road to Number 1 Road and found a Petro Canada station. Â I put in about 20 liters, which was not bad for a V6 and maybe 200 km of driving. Â I drove back to the airport and checked in the car. Â I noticed a few totem poles before going into the airport terminal. Â
Checking into my flight to Seattle and then San Francisco, I was not allowed to hand in my checked bag until I cleared the USA customs. Â I had to give my passport at customs before dropping my bag off. Â After dropping my bag off, I went to the gift shop and bought some salmon and maple syrup. Â The flight to Seattle was on an Embraer E120 twin propeller plane. Â It would be about an hour away from Seattle, and land in Concourse N. Â I would not need to collect my bag until I arrived at San Francisco airport. Â I would have to wait until about 2 PM to board the flight for San Francisco.
At 1:30 PM, the flight to San Francisco would board. Â I had an economy class seat. Â The flight home was not too long. Â I arrived about 5 PM. Â Somehow the flight had misplaced my checked bag, so I had to fill out a form for them to deliver my luggage to my home. Â I took the Line 292 back to Hillsdale and Norfolk Street in San Mateo, and walk the rest of the way home. Â It was not too far to walk. Â It must have been 7 PM when I arrived home. Â I made some supper, probably spaghetti or something, watched some TV and went to bed.
The next day I drove to work, worked from 7 AM to about 4 PM. Â I had some maple sugar candies to share with colleagues. Â My suitcase did turn up at home, a little bit after I had left work for the day.
My next overseas journey would be in late July 2003. Â Hope you will join me then!
Also, in May 2003, my car (at the time it was a 1997 Jetta with diesel engine) was all paid off and thus free of finance, and I received the title, what a nice early 31st birthday present.
Good night! Â Bonne nuit!

DC Snipers' Chevy Caprice - A look inside the sniper murder car
20 years ago, the Beltway/DC Snipers John Allen Muhammad and Lee Boyd Malvo terrorized the District of Columbia, Maryland, and Virginia for three weeks in a series of coordinated attacks. Ten people were killed at the hand of the DC snipers and three were critically wounded. The ATF produced this video to demonstrate how detectives believed the sniper suspects used a Chevrolet Caprice as a killing machine.
Malvo was a juvenile when he and Muhammad embarked on the killing spree in the DMV. Others were killed as the pair made their way to the D.C. region from Washington state. Muhammad was executed in 2009.
On Feb. 8, oral arguments began in Malvo's quest to seek either sentencing relief or release under a Maryland law that applies to prisoners who were convicted as juveniles.

Austin Goes Electric: Orlando Bloom rode my Energica at Circuit of the Americas
Itâs not every day that you get invited to a MotoGP race and have a celebrity take your bike for a spirited parade lap!
So I am sitting at my desk working away, getting ready for my first work-related travel for my first customer deployment of charging equipment, when my friend Rick (from Orlando) pings me and asks what Iâm doing October 1-3 and I told him Iâd be getting ready to go to Jacksonville, FL for work. He tells me that Stefano, the US CEO of Energica, is trying to find customers who will lend the company their bikes for a parade lap during the MotoGP race at the Circuit of the Americas in Austin, Texas. He said that if I could meet them in north FL, they could trailer my bike and I could ride in their van (which is converted into a camper and has room for their two Energica Ribelles). I said let me talk with my boss...
I hadnât even been with the company a month yet, but given that my boss is a race fan and another team member is a motorcyclist himself... they told me to go and to use that unlimited PTO. So without hesitation, I told Rick that I was in and texted Stefano to tell him I looked forward to meeting him in person finally, and began to figure out how I was going to get down there.
First, I needed new bags to hold everything. I had work gear, clothes, and other supplies that had to travel with me on two wheels. I found a good sized bag at Cycle Gear that was on sale. I was able to get it to latch onto the back of my bike seat, and Iâd take my IKEA backpack as well (the one that I bought with my Energica EVA when I went to IKEA back in 2019).
This pack was huge, and it was going to create problems for me down the road -- but I was too excited about this amazing adventure to care. Next up, I needed to determine my route. I hit up my buddy Austin who lives in Columbia, SC and he said I could crash on his sofa so I could break the ride from Raleigh, NC to Lake City, FL up into two days. So Iâd leave Tuesday the 28th from my home and ride down to Cacye, SC (about 230mi). I would be stopping in Moncure, NC and Wadesboro, NC and then topping off in Lugoff, SC at a Chevy dealership before Iâd make it to Austinâs home (where I would overnight charge on his Level 2 charger). From here Iâd head down to Augusta GA, Dublin GA, Tifton GA, Valdosta GA, and finally arrive in Lake City FL to meet up with Rick and his wife Sabrina -- about 400mi total.Â
I left the house at 4pm and arrived at my first charging stop in Moncure at 4:46. I like this stop because itâs at a mini mart with a kitchen/cafe and a picnic table. While charging, I took a half hour work-related call and then saddled up to head to Wadesboro.
I arrived at Wadesboro (this location is no longer in existence) around 7:15pm. This charger is at an Electric Member Cooperative (EMC) office, and there is nothing within walking distance of this place. After charging, I headed off to Lugoff Chevrolet - my last stop before Iâd get some much desired sleep.
I arrived in Lugoff just before 10pm. This charge was free, and Iâm really thankful that they leave the DC charger out in the open like this and donât power it off at night. I didnât stay here long, I was only 30-ish miles from Austinâs house. I remember that we chatted a little bit when I arrived (I donât remember the time). I told Austin he needed to go to bed because he gets up at like 4am to go to work, and I needed to get some rest myself. I made myself at home on his sofa and fell fast asleep.
The next morning I departed Austinâs house with a full charge and rode 74mi down to Augusta -- but not before stopping at a Waffle House for a steak and eggs breakfast!
I arrived at the Kroger in Augusta at 10am and started my charge then headed over to the Great Clips to get a haircut. With the sides of my head shaved, and some water procured from the Kroger, I set off for Dublin - where Iâd be eating lunch.
I got to Dublin just before 2pm. This Georgia Power ChargePoint charging station is located at a Burger King, which meant it was ChaKing Chicken Sandwich time. I do like their chicken sandwiches. After eating and charging, it was off to Tifton.
In Tifton I completely repacked all my bags and moved the big bag to the tank. This made things a lot easier on me, especially since Iâd taken most of the heavy stuff out of my backpack so that my back would stop hurting. After laying out in the grassy field (this station is actually in a hotel parking lot), I headed off to Valdosta -- the last needed charge stop before the rendezvous with Rick and Sabrina.
Valdosta was a trouble stop -- it took two or three attempts to get the charger to work, and the bike was very hot and reduced its charging speed to a max of 9kW. After getting enough juice to make it the home stretch, it was off to Lake city!
I arrived at Lake City sometime after 10pm, Rick and Sabrina showed up with their van and trailer about 10:30pm. We loaded my bike up then pulled across the street to a motel to rest for the night. What a good sleep that was!
Thursday we drove from Florida to Texas. I donât remember where we stopped to sleep, but I remember we made it to Texas. The next morning we headed out early and arrive at the Circuit of the Americas in Austin sometime in the 10am hour.
Now the confusion starts. We had to take COVID tests and get our badges, and the tests had to come back before the events started on Saturday or we wouldnât be allowed in the paddock. It took several calls and driving around the exceptionally large race track before we finally found Stefano and Chris Paz from Energica who escorted us to the place to get our COVID tests and badges.Â
Chris and Stefano had brought a bike from the local dealer, and another customerâs bike to the paddock already. We unloaded our bikes and left them for the event the next day. We went to our hotel and decompressed for a bit while we wanted for Livia (Energica CEO) and Giampieroâs (Energica CTO) plane to land. Once they touched down, we all coordinated meeting up for dinner at Cooperâs Old Time BBQ.
Itâs not every day you get to eat dinner with the CEO of a motorcycle company, and Livia is the sweetest person on earth. It was so much fun to talk with her about life, motorcycles, electrification, and the differences between Italian riders and American riders -- notably the difference in listening to music or podcasts while riding. I also found out that it was Livia who insisted the Energica bikes have a reverse function -- a key feature that made me want one.
Livia and Giampiero were naturally exhausted and ready to retire for the night after our delicious BBQ dinner. We all said our goodbyes and headed back to our respective hotels for some shut eye.
The next morning we headed to the track around 10am. Today was the big day where our bikes were going do their parade lap. Now, there was even more confusion about who was riding the bikes. Up until we got to the track on Saturday, we thought that we were going to be the riders. But once we arrived on scene, we were given some forms to sign and told that celebrities will be riding our bikes around the track. Well, thatâs cool. Who are they?
There were several European influencers - they gravitated to my bike for reasons unknown (one guy said it was the most upright and familiar riding position to him), and they proceeded to do wheelies and all sorts of stunts. Livia could tell we were all a tad concerned, especially since one of the shorter guys nearly dropped my bike not once but twice -- both times people standing next to him grabbing it to prevent it from going down. Livia assured us that if anything happened to our bikes that sheâd make it right. These were not all the celebrities, we were then told that a former MotoGP winner (Kevin Schwantz) and a movie star were going to be taking part in the parade lap.
Some time later, Livia walked up to me and took my hands. She told me that Mr. Orlando Bloom (yes, Legolas from Lord of the Rings) has chosen to ride my motorcycle. Now, earlier Iâd joked that the movie star would choose my bike because it was the only blue bike -- all the others were some combination of grey, black, and red. Well Livia tells me âMr. Bloom is a bit superstitious and will not ride a red bike, and your bike is the only on thatâs not red.â She again assured me should anything happen, theyâd make things right. I was never a huge Lord of the Rings fan, but I knew he was in that franchise. I really didnât know anything else he had been in, so I started Googling and it turns out heâs quite the avid rider.
At some point we moved closer to the track to watch the race. Then the race paused and people came out with helmets and told us it was time to move. We threw on our helmets -- mine was far too small for my head -- and jumped on our bikes and followed a golf cart around the paddock and onto the track. Mr. Bloom was front of the pack, so I rolled right up to the front to hand my bike off to him.
Mr. Bloom is a very, very soft spoken and sweet guy. He asked me if the bike was set to medium regen, and I said yes -- and asked if heâd ridden one of these before and he said âonce or twiceâ and I could see the smirk on his face despite the helmet. He clearly knew the bike controls because he left in Traction Control Level 6 and came back in Traction Control Level 2. My battery had lost 20% of its state of charge and estimated I could go 29 miles on 69%.
Mr. Bloom took my bike around for an additional lap -- something that I donât think he was supposed to do, but he was having way too much fun. After he came off the track, a swarm of media and cameras rushed him. We were told to stay behind the film crew until we were told otherwise, so thatâs what I did. During this interview process all the riders signed the motorcycles.
We did not know that they were going to do this, and not everyone was thrilled to know that their bikes were going to get Sharpie autographs. But I was thrilled to have Orlando Bloomâs signature!
Chris Paz said heâd send me a new center insert so I could preserve the original signature, which was super cool of him. After the event, we went to an after party at the local Powersports dealer that carries Energica. It was a complete mad house there. I donât know that anyone else from our group made it to the event, and we had parked the Van in such a spot that we had to wait for everyone to leave before we could go. Honestly, things are a blur this far out from when it happened that I donât even remember what we ate for dinner.
Sunday was the official race, but our passes didnât allow us into the paddock. We were allowed restricted access to a viewing area, and the event provided a catered lunch for us. After lunch, Rick said we should go find a sports bar where we can watch the race and drink beer. So we (he, me, Sabrina) all loaded up into the Sprinter van and headed out to find a watering hole. We found one, but we had trouble watching the race. Eventually we wandered back to the track to load up our bikes and later we had dinner with Livia and crew. Rick and Sabrina wanted to call it an early night since we had to get on the road the next day, but I wanted to stay out a little longer. I had them drop me off at a gay bar that happened to be hosting a Karaoke night. I ended up singing Little Red Rodeo before taking an Uber back to the hotel, and drinking a lot of pineapple something something holy shit Iâm drunk goodness.
Monday was a marathon drive back east. I forget where we stopped for the night, but I remember we had Hibachi for dinner. Tuesday we finished driving back to Orlando, unloaded the bikes, and I did some errands before packing up my stuff and calling it a night.
Early -- like 5am -- the next day I woke up and saddled up to head north to Jacksonville for work. I stopped and charged at a Harley dealer in Ormond Beach, and topped off at the Harley dealer outside Jacksonville. I arrived and attempted to check into my hotel, but I was too early. My boss let me store my stuff in his room, and we piled into the rental to head to our job site. I told all the stories here, and more, to my boss and coworker. Oh, and before I forget here is an official MotoGP video of Orlando Bloomâs ride (and you can see me in it in a couple spots). I canât embed the video because Dorna Sports prevents it -- boo. I also was interviewed and you can see that interview at 5:47 in the video below.

National Walk Around Things Day
National Walk Around Things Day is celebrated on the first Wednesday in April of every year. This day has two different perspectives, one is taking the literal meaning of the day, i.e., walking around the things that stands as an obstacle, for an example instead of walking through a park bench or a mud pond, you can walk around them to avoid distraction and to have a peaceful walk. It just means to walk around for some exercise. Another metaphorical meaning for the day is that to walk around the problems that stands in the way. Sometimes it is better to neglect few issues than to deal with it, in that way you be in peace and happiness. You can avoid unnecessary arguments, uncomfortable situations, conditions which are not under your control, etc. Many of lifeâs problems are not worth fighting for so just walk around them. But be careful that from what kind of problems you walk away. As the exact reason for the day is unknown, itâs up to oneâs choice to celebrate the day in the way they wish.
âEvery human walks around with a certain kind of sadness. They may not wear it on their sleeves, but itâs there if you look deep.â- Taraji P. Henson
History of National Walk Around Things Day
The origin of National Walk Around Things Day is still not found. The reason for the celebration is only assumed. So the day is observed as one likes. It must be created by someone who would have wanted people to stay away from negative things.
How to celebrate National Walk Around Things Day
National Walk Around Things Day can be taken as an excuse to put aside the problems that are bothering one and spend the day at peace with their loved ones. You can also observe the day by taking yourself for a long, relaxing walk. It can be a walk to your office, a walk to a park nearby or a walk to an unusual place. This walk can help you meet different people, see peculiar things and lot more.

The Mystery of Robert Hourihan
33 year old Robert Hourihan had been married to his wife Tara for 12 years when he went missing in 2011. They had a six year old daughter together and lived in Columbia, Virginia. Robert had a heart condition, Long QT syndrome, that he took daily medication for. He did not have it with him when he disappeared.
On the morning of April 8, 2011, Robert put on his work uniform and left home around 6:30 am, just as he normally would for his job as an electrician. He told his wife Tara that he was headed off to Richmond for work, and she said everything appeared normal that morning as he left in her 2004 white Chevrolet Cavalier.
Rather than going to work, Robert drove northwest on Route 53, and stopped for breakfast at the EW Thomas Grocery store in Palmyra around 8:00 am. He had previously worked there, and was a well known customer as a result. Robert didnât arrive home from work that evening, and his wife was unable to contact him, her calls and texts going unanswered. On April 10 she called the police to report him missing, and the Fluvanna County Sheriffâs Office launched an investigation.
Robertâs last cell phone call was made at 7:41 am in Palmyra, Virginia. He was seen by several witnesses having breakfast at the EW Thomas store that morning between 7:40 â 8:00 am. This is the last confirmed sighting of Robert.
Authorities initially believed Robert was heading to Richmond for work on the morning he disappeared, but later learned he wasnât scheduled for work that day, and instead had a meeting planned with an acquaintance named Daniel Boyd Fennel. Investigators spoke to Daniel, who said he didnât know where Robert was. He told police they were supposed to meet up that morning and take a trip to New York City, but Robert never showed up.
On May 28, 2011, authorities located the white Chevrolet Cavalier Robert was driving when he disappeared. It was found abandoned in the corner of a Target parking lot in La Plata, Maryland, more than 100 miles away from where Robert was last seen. His work tools and uniform were found inside the vehicle, but his cell phone was missing.Â
Authorities suspect foul play is involved in Robertâs disappearance, and believe someone has information that will help solve the case. Tara doesnât believe Robert would leave his family and run off on his own. He also needs his heart medication that he left behind. The location of Robert Hourihan, and the circumstances regarding his disappearance remains unknown. His case remains unsolved.
Robert was last seen wearing a gray shirt, blue work pants and boots. He was driving a 2004 white Chevrolet Cavalier with the license plate âTARA MAEâ and a Winnie The Pooh sticker in the back window when he went missing.Â
If you have any information regarding the disappearance of Robert Hourihan please contact the Fluvanna County Sheriffâs Office at (434) 589-8211.

1. Manhunt
Another late night at your desk in your townhouse, staring at papers, broke upon you. You sipped on your glass of whiskey before setting it down and going over the evidence one more time. Your mother came into the little office every hour or so, checking on you and offering you food. But it was hard to even think about swallowing anything as you looked at the gruesome pictures in front of you.
Your phone rang and you picked it up like a reflex after the first ring, the clock on the wall telling you it was shortly after 1am.
âAgent Heller,â you said, recognizing the caller ID of the bureau. âYes, sir, on my way now.â
You got up from your chair, emptied your glass of whiskey, and threw your suit jacket over your shoulders. Before you could rush out the front door, your mom peeked down from the top of the stairs with the same worried look she always had when you went out for another job.
âBe careful, honey,â she meekly called to you.
âAlways am, Mom. Hold the fort down while Iâm gone,â you said with a wink, closing the wooden door behind you, and ran down the stone steps to your Chevrolet Suburban.
Youâve been an agent for the better part of a decade. Being home was rare for you. Even rarer was being relaxed and home. That barely ever happened. You had a habit of taking your cases home with you, and as a shrink, you knew better than anyone that you werenât leading the most healthy lifestyle.
You studied psychology and minored in criminology at Columbia before the bureau recruited you into the Academy. Quantico was your home at this point. You worked in the Behavioral Analysis Unit as a rookie agent before moving to Major Crimes. Everyone you worked with knew you were the best profiler in the country, and you had caught a lot of assholes over the last few years.
You had just gotten home from your last successful assignment, arresting a serial killer youâd been after for years. He had killed five prostitutes in a span of three years â nothing special in the realm of serial killers. Youâve seen worse. Still, another psycho was rotting in jail, thanks to you.
You were supposed to have the week off, but when your boss called with another lead to a case of yours, you knew you had to jump. You had been working for twelve years to finally catch these killers but never got a breakthrough. Youâve been close a few times, but inexplicably, they always managed to get away just in time.
You drove all night to Ohio, booking the closest motel room, and got the boxes of case files out of your trunk, placing them down on the little dining table. You were sick and tired of chasing these guys. They were probably the worst serial killers youâve had ever seen, leaving a trail of crimes behind, spanning almost their whole lives. A mixture of Bundy and Manson. There was no clear pattern in their murder sprees; each time was different, leaving you with little to go on.
This time, they were seen in Akron, Ohio, and you were more than determined to get them. Dead or alive. The murder sprees needed to end. You wouldnât let more innocent people die. You wanted to make the world a safer place.
You opened one of the files and your eyes narrowed at the sight of their mugshots. Sam and Dean Winchester â the most dangerous and cruel killers youâve ever encountered.
At this point, it was more than just a case for you. It was downright personal.
You reviewed the case files for the rest of the day, trying to get a clear picture of what was happening here. Yesterday, the Winchester brothers were seen in Akron, attending a pie festival of all things, telling you just how sick and twisted they truly were. Afterward, a couple of children were kidnapped from their home, their motherâs tongue was cut out, and the father was stabbed and drained of all his blood.
Another cruel and senseless crime committed by these monsters. Right now, you just hoped the children were still alive; you would do everything in your power to save them.
In the evening, you visited the local bar, needing a stiff drink after looking at victimsâ photos all day, knowing how easily this job could make you an alcoholic.
Your phone then rang in your jeans pocket, and you sighed at the caller ID, picking up with an âIâm sorry.â
âYou forgot,â it huffed on the other line.
âNo, no, no⊠well, yes. Yeah, I did. Iâm sorry, Andrew,â you apologized, feeling guilty. This wasnât the first time you forgot about a date night. Youâve only been seeing him for three weeks and had managed to screw up five times already.
A deep sigh could be heard through the phone. âItâs alright. How long do you need to get ready?â
âOh, uh, Iâm actually in Ohio right now. See, they got another lead on this case Iâve been working on for forever⊠itâs a big thing. I know theyâre here. I can feel it in my gut,â you told him adamantly as you sat at the bar counter, nursing your drink. You were like a dog with a bone.
âUnbelievable,â he scoffed.
âAndrew, Iâm really sorry. Raincheck?â you offered hopefully. Still, you flagged down the bartender to get you another drink, knowing this conversation wouldnât end well.
âYou know what, Y/N? I tried. But I think we should call time of death on this relationship. Iâm sorry,â he said sternly, hanging up on you for good.
You pocketed your phone again and pursed your lips before emptying your freshly refilled glass. Another relationship down the drain.
One thing you learned in all these years: having a relationship and being good at your job were mutually exclusive. You had tried it before, even settled down. You married a federal prosecutor who had worked with you for five years before you tied the knot. You enjoyed a great partnership with him, putting several criminals behind bars. You had hoped that partnership would hold up in private as well â you had barely reached two years before getting divorced again.
He had called you a coldhearted workaholic. But he had been a workaholic, too. You thought thatâs what you both had in common. Judging by his new fiancĂ©, a blonde bimbo with a cooking show, he wanted a trophy wife. And that just wasnât you.
Now, he was a district attorney in Maryland and about to get married while you were barely able to hold down a relationship for longer than a month and shared a townhouse in DC with your mother. Your job just always took priority over everything else in your life.
You figured your day couldnât get any worse when some random guy decided to hit on you.
âHey, you look like you had a bad day. Mind if I make it a little better and buy you a drink?â a deep, husky voice asked from behind you. You watched in your peripheral as the guy leaned casually against the counter.
You were about to tear this guy a new one when you glanced up from your drink at him. Green eyes, flannel, shit-eating grin. Dean Winchester. The color drained from your cheeks in seconds as you stared up at the man in front of you.
You quickly turned away from him, taking a big sip from your whiskey. âNo, thanks. Iâm good, pal,â you muttered. Apparently, now you attracted serial killers as your only mating option. Your life couldnât go any better. God, you were a mess.
âOh, câmon, sweetheart. One drink, and if you donât like me by then, Iâll go,â he offered you with a smirk. You knew from your research that the guy hit on anything with two boobs. It wasnât particularly flattering to be chosen as a killerâs next hook-up.
You let out a sinister laugh, pulled out your badge from your leather jacket, and held it up to his face. âThatâs Agent Sweetheart for you. And if you donât go-,â you pushed your jacket to the side, revealing your gun underneath it before you gently removed the safety, âIâll pull.â
âWhoa, okay,â he chuckled nervously, holding his hands up in surrender. âYouâre FBI. I can respect that. How about I leave you alone for forever and you tuck that gun away again, okay?â
âDeal,â you told him dryly, watching him retreat back to the far end of the bar.
You pulled out your phone, opened the camera, putting it into selfie mode. You wouldnât let them out of your sight now that you had them. In the faraway corner booth sat Sam Winchester, slumped over a couple of newspapers. His older brother walked back over to him, probably informing him of your presence.
It was a dumb move to show your badge, but sometimes it was hard to resist, letting all that anger that had accumulated over the last twelve years cloud your judgment. They didnât know you were onto them, but you knew the brothers were also avoiding the law like the plague.
The Winchesters exchanged a few words before abruptly leaving the bar. You finished your third drink and followed them inconspicuously, deciding to trail them in case they made a run for it again.
They had ironically set up in the same motel you had, the shiny black Impala parked in the parking lot out front. You waited in your SUV for a couple of hours, watching their motel room until the lights went dark. When you were sure they were asleep, you snuck over to the classic black beauty and placed a tracker there.
All you had to do now was wait and see, but you were more than sure they wouldnât get far this time. Not on your watch.
The next day, the Winchesters dressed up in suits and ties, visiting the familyâs home that had been ravaged by monsters. The house was sealed off with yellow police tape as officers moved around the crime scene. The brothers held up their badges to another detective before entering the home.
âSinger and Kripke, FBI,â Sam said, flashing his badge.
âFBI? Your colleague was already here,â the officer frowned, and the brothers shared a look. It could only be the FBI agent they had run into yesterday at the bar.
âLet me guess â pretty, feisty, angry look on her face?â Dean mused with a chuckle, remembering the woman he had tried to hit on.
âThatâs her,â the officer scoffed, âTold me to get outta her way or retire. You federal agents always think youâre better than us, but Iâm doing good and honest police work here.â
âIâm sure you are, sir,â Dean apologized, switching on his charm. âIâm sorry for my colleague. Sheâs had a⊠rough night.â
The cop mumbled a few more choice words before disappearing out of sight again.
âYou think she recognized us?â Sam whispered to his older brother.
Dean shrugged, shaking his head, âNah, I think weâre good.â
âIâm just sayinâ, we need to be careful, Dean,â Sam warned. âWe donât have Chuck around to protect us anymore.â
âYeah, and thatâs a damn good thing, remember?â Dean scoffed in response. ââSides, whatâs he got to do with anything?â
âWell, he put luck on our side. You really thought us not getting caught all these years wasnât on him?â Sam cocked an eyebrow at his brother.
âNever thought about that, actually. Figured it was my good looks and genius that kept us going for so long,â Dean smirked, earning him a frown.
âDean, we need to be-â
âCareful,â he finished with an eye roll. âYeah, you said that already. Multiple times. And we will. We solve this case, kill the monsters, and then back to the bunker we go. But câmon, man! This is the first case in weeks. Iâm starting to get bored.â
âAlright, fine. In and out,â Sam reiterated.
The brothers learned everything they needed to know before leaving the crime scene again. It was vampires, the victimâs drained blood giving them their final clue. Moreover, this quickly turned into a familiar case, Johnâs journal revealing a similar crime spree in the same town in the 80s. If the pattern held up, the little town of Canton, Ohio, would be next on the vampsâ list.
Sam and Dean then identified the next victimsâ home that fit the previous pattern. The target house was located on the outskirts of town with two children living inside, no older than ten. Soon enough, they were proven right when a black van pulled up, and two people with black skeleton masks jumped out, both carrying blades.
Before the men could enter the house, Dean cut off the head of one of them with his machete. Sam then turned the attention of the second vamp to him and shot him in the leg and head with bullets full of dead manâs blood.
The brothers moved the unconscious body quickly away from the house and a little further into the woods. There were still two missing children out there â nothing a little torture couldnât fix.
They tied the vampâs hands behind his back, placing him down on a tree stump before Dean woke him up with a slap to the guyâs cheek. âHey there, sleepy.â
âWhat'd you hit me with?â the vampire asked, still partially out from the poison coursing through his body.
âOh, it speaks. Not a mime. Still evil, though,â Dean muttered.
âIt was a bullet⊠soaked in dead man's blood,â Sam replied with a sly smile on his face.
âSo, let's talk kids, hm?â Dean suggested, the machete ready in his hand, waiting to strike. âThose two that you grabbed a couple nights ago... Where are they?â
But the vampire laughed in his face fearlessly, clearly not caring about the oldest Winchesterâs empty threats.
âYeah, you really should tell him,â Sam advised the vamp knowingly, chuckling.
The monster stared between the brothers, contemplating for a second. âAnd if I do, what? You let me go?â
âOh, no, no, no, no, no. No,â Dean shook his head vehemently. âThis isn't a you-walk-out-of-here kind of a situation. But see, if you tell us quick, you get this.â He held up the shiny silver machete for the vamp to see. âBut if you take your time, you get, uh... you get that.â He then gestured to Sam, who pulled out a tiny switchblade from his pocket.
âYeah, I'll... I'll take that itty-bitty one,â the vamp retorted.
âThat's a bad choice,â Sam stated.
âYou see, this⊠this is quick,â Dean stated, showing the guy his machete again. âItâs clean. You know, no muss, no fuss. You blink, and you're dead.â
âBut a blade this small-,â Sam continued to explain. âI'm gonna have to keep sawing and sawing to get your head off, and you'll feel it. Every muscle, tendon, every inch. It could take hours.â
Dean then leaned in a little closer to the vampire, âOh, and if those kids are dead, he's gonna use a spoon.â
The guy looked nervously at the little blade in Samâs hands before glancing back at Dean. âThey⊠they're not dead. They're with the nest. We take a harvest. Every few years, grab a couple kids, raise them up, feed them right, juice them. We don't do fast food,â the vamp explained.
âYeah, alright. Where are they?â Sam inquired.
âBarn, east outside of town,â the vampire replied compliantly before a laugh escaped his lips.
âWhatâs so funny?â Dean growled.
âOh, youâre in trouble,â the vamp chuckled.
Before the brothers could figure out what the vamp was laughing about, they heard a gun clack behind their backs.
âFBI! Drop the weapons, hands behind your head, and turn around!â you ordered them.
âSon of a bitch! You gotta be kidding me,â Dean hissed, letting his head tilt back in annoyance. âYou take care of him, I take care of her,â he whispered to Sam before the brothers dropped the blades and turned around as instructed.
âAgent Sweetheart, good to see you again,â Dean grinned at you.
âSam and Dean Winchester, youâre under arrest. Step away from the victim,â you told them as they faced you.
Dean frowned at you, baffled, âWhoa, you think this guy is a victim? Look at him.â
âYeah, lady, you gotta help me! These guys are crazy! They wanted to kill me with a spoon!â the man tied up on a tree stump informed you.
âShut up,â the brothers told him in unison and rolled their eyes.
âLook, I know this is bad, but it isnât what it looks like,â Dean tried to explain, taking a few steps closer to you. He stopped in his tracks as you adjusted your aim, pointing the gun directly between his eyes.
âWouldnât take a step further. I will definitely pull that trigger,â you warned him. âAnd it looks like you kidnapped a guy, tied him up, and were gonna kill him with a machete and a switchblade,â you pointed out. âI found the other body in front of the house. This ends now.â
âAs I said, I know it looks bad. I know itâs gonna sound unbelievable, but this guy isnât human,â Dean said, sharing a brief look with his brother. âHeâs a vampire. Weâre hunters. We hunt monsters like him. Weâre on the same side here, Agent.â
âIâm not on your side,â you gritted your teeth at the insult. âAnd I have a psych degree. I know how paranoia and hallucinations work. Henriksen was right. You guys are whack jobs,â you stated, shaking your head at them. Vampires? Really? Thatâs what they tried to sell you on?
The brothers shared a long look at the mention of your former partnerâs name, seemingly remembering him. You would make sure theyâd remember your name, too.
âHenriksen? You worked with Agent Henriksen?â Sam asked you, a baffled expression written across his face.
âYeah, he was my mentor and first partner. And you killed him,â you spat angrily.
âWhoa, okay! We did not kill him. Look, if you let us finish this, save those kids, weâll explain everything you wanna know. But you gotta trust us, okay?â Dean told you, his green eyes boring into yours.
It was the most ridiculous thing you had ever heard. For twelve years, you hunted those two brutal serial killers, and now they were begging you to trust them. Trust them?!
Yet, something in those green eyes still tugged on you, making you believe he was sincere about his words. Delusion really was a funny thing.
âSorry, canât do that,â you said and pulled the trigger, aiming for his knee.
Dean jumped to the side just in time and tackled you to the ground while Sam picked up the machete and cut the other guyâs head off. Your gun flew out of your hands, and Dean was strong as he pinned you down on the wet grass. However, you were a trained agent, and with a few good kicks to his head and groin, you managed to get the oldest Winchester off of you long enough to get back onto your feet.
Dean, however, wasnât far behind you, getting back up as well. âSam, go! Iâll be right there!â he shouted at his younger brother, who made a run for it.
âYouâre not getting away,â you snarled.
âLook, Agent Sweetheart, I tried to make this easy on you⊠Iâm really sorry I have to do this, but it looks like youâre gonna have to take a brief nap,â Dean declared.
And then everything went black as you felt his fist hit your face.
