Vancouver and Chilliwack April 2003
22 - 24 April 2003
Hi everyone!  This weekend 20 years ago, I visited Vancouver, BC, Canada, for the second time.  I spent two nights in Vancouver's Davie district, sort of west of downtown Vancouver.  It was also the first time I rented a car on my own, in a foreign country.
I flew on Friday 22nd April from SFO airport's Terminal 3 by United Airlines.  I had booked a first class seat with a 500 mile coupon.  The flight took off about 5 PM nonstop to Vancouver.  I think I arrived about 8 PM.  When I landed, it was in the US terminal where prechecks going back take place.  I had to go through Canadian customs.  They asked their nosy questions similar to the last time I was there, April 2002.  I was admitted into Canada, then I went to baggage claim and retrieved my suitcase.  I went through the "Nothing to declare" green lane.
Once I retrieved my suitcase, I went to the Hertz car rental desk.  They had my car ready.  It was a 2003 Oldsmobile Alero (in Europe this was sold as the Chevrolet Alero).  This one had a 3.4 liter V6 engine, 4 speed automatic transmission, and an AM/FM/CD player radio.  I did not really need a map for the most part, as I had been to the youth hostel on Thurlow and Burnaby Streets once before.  Parking it would be a challenge, but the hospital nearby had parking.
I drove up Grant McConachie Way to Granville Street.  After Granville Island, BC route 99 split off into Howe and Seymour Streets.  I went northeast on Seymour Street, to Davie Street and turned left.  I went to Thurlow Street and turned left, then turned onto Burnaby Street.  Back then, there was no plan to build what is known as the Canada Line.  I noticed that some of the signals, that had flashing green signals, which meant mainly the same thing as a steady green.  When the light was to change, there would be four seconds of steady green before the light went yellow.  When the red cycle was over, the light would flash green again and repeat the cycle as necessary.  That is something that happens in British Columbia, I have not seen that in other provinces in Canada.
I checked into the hostel, and deposited my bags in my room.  I had a single room, right next to the elevator.  My room was not ensuite, there was a shared bathroom down the hall.  I had to park the car at St. Paul's Hospital.  The car park allowed long term parking, so it was okay to park there overnight.  Parking in Vancouver is much more difficult that most cities in the USA.  I think it was about $20 US to park for two nights.  Once I parked the car, I walked to Thurlow Street, then Davie, and to Bute Street.  I remembered Hamburger Mary's (now it is called Mary's on Davie), so I went there.  I thought about going to Denny's but I passed on that.  In Canada, the apostrophe of Denny's is the red maple leaf.  McDonald's has something similar in its corporate logo, with a red leaf in the center.  I ordered a large hamburger but was unable to eat it all for some reason.  I left enough fries as well.  The waiter gave me a hinge container, I think a 9 by 6 by 3 inches (22 by 15 by 8 cm) and I took my food to the hostel.  The hostel had a communal walk-in refrigerator, and they provided a permanent marker to mark whose food belonged to whom, and what their checkout date was.  If there was food in the refrigerator and the guest had already checked out, it was put on a special rack for "free food".  The hostel did not provide breakfast back then, so people had to cook their own.  After I went to my room, I went to sleep.  It was not high season, so it was fairly easy to fall asleep.
On Saturday 23rd April, I woke up, took a shower, went down to the kitchen to collect my hamburger and fries, then walked to the hospital to get the car.  I stopped at a Blenz coffee shop, to get some coffee.  Blenz is a coffee chain in British Columbia similar to Starbuck's, has few, if any, locations outside of British Columbia.  I drove along Davie Street to Denman Street, up BC route 99 to Stanley Park Drive and the totem poles.  The previous year, 2002, I had visited the Indigenous Art Museum at University of British Columbia where they had a massive collection of totem poles.  The ones at Stanley Park were okay, not particularly spectactular.  I liked the view of the Vancouver skyline better.  I was able to see Canada Place across the harbor.  The weather was nice then.  I bought a few gifts for my family at the gift shop.  I finished my hamburger, fries and coffee before driving onwards.
After leaving Stanley Park on the north side of the island, I went north on the Lions Gate Bridge to North Vancouver.  I ended up in the Capilano Indian Reserve.  I turned right on Marine Drive and drove east on Third Street and eventually Main Street.  I crossed back into Vancouver by the Trans Canada Highway route 1 which went through Burnaby and Abbotsford.  The speed limit was 100 km/h.  All highway distances were in metric.  After Abbotsford, the speed limit increased to 110 km/h.  I planned to go only as far as Chilliwack.  Chilliwack was named from the indigenous word Ts'elxweyeqw.  The highway was very nice.  I played a CD in the CD player.  It was mostly of music I had recorded from November 2002, including a few German songs.  It felt odd to play German music in Canada.
Once I arrived in Chilliwack, it looked very similar to a small town in the USA, with the main difference being, instead of the Stars and Stripes, it was two red rectangles, and a big red maple leaf on top of the white rectangle.  I stopped at the McDonald's on Luckakuck Way, and ordered a hamburger and a small Coke.  The hamburger tasted just like the ones I had in the USA.  I drove to downtown Chilliwack and wanted to see the murals.  One of them stood out to me and it was the decades from 1930 to 1990 or so.
About 2 PM, I drove west on the Trans Canada highway to Vancouver, turning off at Hastings and driving on to St. Paul's Hospital to park again.  I walked to the hostel and asked for a day pass.  They sold me one for $8.00.  I went to the Shoppers Drug Mart, nearby and bought a 2 liter bottle of Sprite Ice.  Sprite Ice is basically Sprite with mint flavoring.  I rode on the line 6 to Seymour Street, transferred to the line 4 or line 7, and went to the Granville Skytrain station.  Back then, Skytrain did not have fare gates.  Skytrain stations Granville and Burrard, both have the eastbound platform on the lower level and westbound platform at the upper level.  I took the Skytrain to Gastown, which would require a walk from the Waterfront station.  I walked a few blocks along Water Street to the whistling steam clock.  I watched the clock strike 3 PM.  I wish at the time, that I had a working video camera.  That would not happen until a year later.
I walked to the Victory Square Cenotaph at Victory Square, and drank some of the Sprite Ice from the bottle that I had in my bag.  I walked down Cambie Street and BC route 1A to the Stadium-Chinatown Skytrain station.  I took the Millenium Line to Loughheed Town Center.  I remember the Millenium line only went as far as Braid, but on 31st August, the line was expanded to Commercial/Broadway.  I spent about an hour in the Town Center.  It was not much more different than the average shopping mall in the USA.
Due to its location, it was hard to accurately keep track of time, and the sun set later than in California.  I took the Skytrain from Loughheed Town Center to Granville, took a bus to Robson Street and then fou a place to eat for supper.  It was a Japanese curry restaurant.  I ordered a donkatsu curry with udon noodles.  It tasted excellent.  I had a bubble tea, I think, matcha flavored.  Then I walked back to the hostel.
When I was at the hostel, I took my radio and recorded some music.  The radio I had was not the Aiwa HS-JS 479 that I brought the previous year, but it was a portable one with digital tuning and 2 inch / 5 cm speakers.  Its cassette playback had the "Q-Sound" function to play prerecorded cassettes.  I recorded some French and also some English programming.  On one of the French stations, I recorded "Tous les palmiers" by the Quebec band Beau Dommage, and "Un homme et une femme" by some unknown duo, definitely not the original ones from the 1960s, definitely not Mireille Mathieu either.  I went to bed soon after that.
Sunday the 24th April, I had to wake up and get breakfast.  I had a coffee and pastry at Blenz Coffee on Davie Street.  Then I checked out of the hostel, took my luggage to the car, and drove south on Granville Road to the airport.  However there was one problem.  I needed to fill up the tank, and I was not able to find a reliable gas station.  I had to drive to Richmond, just a little south of the airport, to find some place that sold gas.  Gas in Canada is more expensive than it is in the USA, and is sold by the liter.  I drove along Number 2 Road, then Francis Road to Number 1 Road and found a Petro Canada station.  I put in about 20 liters, which was not bad for a V6 and maybe 200 km of driving.  I drove back to the airport and checked in the car.  I noticed a few totem poles before going into the airport terminal.
Checking into my flight to Seattle and then San Francisco, I was not allowed to hand in my checked bag until I cleared the USA customs.  I had to give my passport at customs before dropping my bag off.  After dropping my bag off, I went to the gift shop and bought some salmon and maple syrup.  The flight to Seattle was on an Embraer E120 twin propeller plane.  It would be about an hour away from Seattle, and land in Concourse N.  I would not need to collect my bag until I arrived at San Francisco airport.  I would have to wait until about 2 PM to board the flight for San Francisco.
At 1:30 PM, the flight to San Francisco would board.  I had an economy class seat.  The flight home was not too long.  I arrived about 5 PM.  Somehow the flight had misplaced my checked bag, so I had to fill out a form for them to deliver my luggage to my home.  I took the Line 292 back to Hillsdale and Norfolk Street in San Mateo, and walk the rest of the way home.  It was not too far to walk.  It must have been 7 PM when I arrived home.  I made some supper, probably spaghetti or something, watched some TV and went to bed.
The next day I drove to work, worked from 7 AM to about 4 PM.  I had some maple sugar candies to share with colleagues.  My suitcase did turn up at home, a little bit after I had left work for the day.
My next overseas journey would be in late July 2003.  Hope you will join me then!
Also, in May 2003, my car (at the time it was a 1997 Jetta with diesel engine) was all paid off and thus free of finance, and I received the title, what a nice early 31st birthday present.
Good night!  Bonne nuit!

DC Snipers' Chevy Caprice - A look inside the sniper murder car
20 years ago, the Beltway/DC Snipers John Allen Muhammad and Lee Boyd Malvo terrorized the District of Columbia, Maryland, and Virginia for three weeks in a series of coordinated attacks. Ten people were killed at the hand of the DC snipers and three were critically wounded. The ATF produced this video to demonstrate how detectives believed the sniper suspects used a Chevrolet Caprice as a killing machine.
Malvo was a juvenile when he and Muhammad embarked on the killing spree in the DMV. Others were killed as the pair made their way to the D.C. region from Washington state. Muhammad was executed in 2009.
On Feb. 8, oral arguments began in Malvo's quest to seek either sentencing relief or release under a Maryland law that applies to prisoners who were convicted as juveniles.

National Walk Around Things Day
National Walk Around Things Day is celebrated on the first Wednesday in April of every year. This day has two different perspectives, one is taking the literal meaning of the day, i.e., walking around the things that stands as an obstacle, for an example instead of walking through a park bench or a mud pond, you can walk around them to avoid distraction and to have a peaceful walk. It just means to walk around for some exercise. Another metaphorical meaning for the day is that to walk around the problems that stands in the way. Sometimes it is better to neglect few issues than to deal with it, in that way you be in peace and happiness. You can avoid unnecessary arguments, uncomfortable situations, conditions which are not under your control, etc. Many of life’s problems are not worth fighting for so just walk around them. But be careful that from what kind of problems you walk away. As the exact reason for the day is unknown, it’s up to one’s choice to celebrate the day in the way they wish.
“Every human walks around with a certain kind of sadness. They may not wear it on their sleeves, but it’s there if you look deep.”- Taraji P. Henson
History of National Walk Around Things Day
The origin of National Walk Around Things Day is still not found. The reason for the celebration is only assumed. So the day is observed as one likes. It must be created by someone who would have wanted people to stay away from negative things.
How to celebrate National Walk Around Things Day
National Walk Around Things Day can be taken as an excuse to put aside the problems that are bothering one and spend the day at peace with their loved ones. You can also observe the day by taking yourself for a long, relaxing walk. It can be a walk to your office, a walk to a park nearby or a walk to an unusual place. This walk can help you meet different people, see peculiar things and lot more.

1. Manhunt
Another late night at your desk in your townhouse, staring at papers, broke upon you. You sipped on your glass of whiskey before setting it down and going over the evidence one more time. Your mother came into the little office every hour or so, checking on you and offering you food. But it was hard to even think about swallowing anything as you looked at the gruesome pictures in front of you.
Your phone rang and you picked it up like a reflex after the first ring, the clock on the wall telling you it was shortly after 1am.
“Agent Heller,” you said, recognizing the caller ID of the bureau. “Yes, sir, on my way now.”
You got up from your chair, emptied your glass of whiskey, and threw your suit jacket over your shoulders. Before you could rush out the front door, your mom peeked down from the top of the stairs with the same worried look she always had when you went out for another job.
“Be careful, honey,” she meekly called to you.
“Always am, Mom. Hold the fort down while I’m gone,” you said with a wink, closing the wooden door behind you, and ran down the stone steps to your Chevrolet Suburban.
You’ve been an agent for the better part of a decade. Being home was rare for you. Even rarer was being relaxed and home. That barely ever happened. You had a habit of taking your cases home with you, and as a shrink, you knew better than anyone that you weren’t leading the most healthy lifestyle.
You studied psychology and minored in criminology at Columbia before the bureau recruited you into the Academy. Quantico was your home at this point. You worked in the Behavioral Analysis Unit as a rookie agent before moving to Major Crimes. Everyone you worked with knew you were the best profiler in the country, and you had caught a lot of assholes over the last few years.
You had just gotten home from your last successful assignment, arresting a serial killer you’d been after for years. He had killed five prostitutes in a span of three years – nothing special in the realm of serial killers. You’ve seen worse. Still, another psycho was rotting in jail, thanks to you.
You were supposed to have the week off, but when your boss called with another lead to a case of yours, you knew you had to jump. You had been working for twelve years to finally catch these killers but never got a breakthrough. You’ve been close a few times, but inexplicably, they always managed to get away just in time.
You drove all night to Ohio, booking the closest motel room, and got the boxes of case files out of your trunk, placing them down on the little dining table. You were sick and tired of chasing these guys. They were probably the worst serial killers you’ve had ever seen, leaving a trail of crimes behind, spanning almost their whole lives. A mixture of Bundy and Manson. There was no clear pattern in their murder sprees; each time was different, leaving you with little to go on.
This time, they were seen in Akron, Ohio, and you were more than determined to get them. Dead or alive. The murder sprees needed to end. You wouldn’t let more innocent people die. You wanted to make the world a safer place.
You opened one of the files and your eyes narrowed at the sight of their mugshots. Sam and Dean Winchester – the most dangerous and cruel killers you’ve ever encountered.
At this point, it was more than just a case for you. It was downright personal.
Tumblr media
You reviewed the case files for the rest of the day, trying to get a clear picture of what was happening here. Yesterday, the Winchester brothers were seen in Akron, attending a pie festival of all things, telling you just how sick and twisted they truly were. Afterward, a couple of children were kidnapped from their home, their mother’s tongue was cut out, and the father was stabbed and drained of all his blood.
Another cruel and senseless crime committed by these monsters. Right now, you just hoped the children were still alive; you would do everything in your power to save them.
In the evening, you visited the local bar, needing a stiff drink after looking at victims’ photos all day, knowing how easily this job could make you an alcoholic.
Your phone then rang in your jeans pocket, and you sighed at the caller ID, picking up with an “I’m sorry.”
“You forgot,” it huffed on the other line.
“No, no, no… well, yes. Yeah, I did. I’m sorry, Andrew,” you apologized, feeling guilty. This wasn’t the first time you forgot about a date night. You’ve only been seeing him for three weeks and had managed to screw up five times already.
A deep sigh could be heard through the phone. “It’s alright. How long do you need to get ready?”
“Oh, uh, I’m actually in Ohio right now. See, they got another lead on this case I’ve been working on for forever… it’s a big thing. I know they’re here. I can feel it in my gut,” you told him adamantly as you sat at the bar counter, nursing your drink. You were like a dog with a bone.
“Unbelievable,” he scoffed.
“Andrew, I’m really sorry. Raincheck?” you offered hopefully. Still, you flagged down the bartender to get you another drink, knowing this conversation wouldn’t end well.
“You know what, Y/N? I tried. But I think we should call time of death on this relationship. I’m sorry,” he said sternly, hanging up on you for good.
You pocketed your phone again and pursed your lips before emptying your freshly refilled glass. Another relationship down the drain.
One thing you learned in all these years: having a relationship and being good at your job were mutually exclusive. You had tried it before, even settled down. You married a federal prosecutor who had worked with you for five years before you tied the knot. You enjoyed a great partnership with him, putting several criminals behind bars. You had hoped that partnership would hold up in private as well – you had barely reached two years before getting divorced again.
He had called you a coldhearted workaholic. But he had been a workaholic, too. You thought that’s what you both had in common. Judging by his new fiancé, a blonde bimbo with a cooking show, he wanted a trophy wife. And that just wasn’t you.
Now, he was a district attorney in Maryland and about to get married while you were barely able to hold down a relationship for longer than a month and shared a townhouse in DC with your mother. Your job just always took priority over everything else in your life.
You figured your day couldn’t get any worse when some random guy decided to hit on you.
“Hey, you look like you had a bad day. Mind if I make it a little better and buy you a drink?” a deep, husky voice asked from behind you. You watched in your peripheral as the guy leaned casually against the counter.
You were about to tear this guy a new one when you glanced up from your drink at him. Green eyes, flannel, shit-eating grin. Dean Winchester. The color drained from your cheeks in seconds as you stared up at the man in front of you.
You quickly turned away from him, taking a big sip from your whiskey. “No, thanks. I’m good, pal,” you muttered. Apparently, now you attracted serial killers as your only mating option. Your life couldn’t go any better. God, you were a mess.
“Oh, c’mon, sweetheart. One drink, and if you don’t like me by then, I’ll go,” he offered you with a smirk. You knew from your research that the guy hit on anything with two boobs. It wasn’t particularly flattering to be chosen as a killer’s next hook-up.
You let out a sinister laugh, pulled out your badge from your leather jacket, and held it up to his face. “That’s Agent Sweetheart for you. And if you don’t go-,” you pushed your jacket to the side, revealing your gun underneath it before you gently removed the safety, “I’ll pull.”
“Whoa, okay,” he chuckled nervously, holding his hands up in surrender. “You’re FBI. I can respect that. How about I leave you alone for forever and you tuck that gun away again, okay?”
“Deal,” you told him dryly, watching him retreat back to the far end of the bar.
You pulled out your phone, opened the camera, putting it into selfie mode. You wouldn’t let them out of your sight now that you had them. In the faraway corner booth sat Sam Winchester, slumped over a couple of newspapers. His older brother walked back over to him, probably informing him of your presence.
It was a dumb move to show your badge, but sometimes it was hard to resist, letting all that anger that had accumulated over the last twelve years cloud your judgment. They didn’t know you were onto them, but you knew the brothers were also avoiding the law like the plague.
The Winchesters exchanged a few words before abruptly leaving the bar. You finished your third drink and followed them inconspicuously, deciding to trail them in case they made a run for it again.
They had ironically set up in the same motel you had, the shiny black Impala parked in the parking lot out front. You waited in your SUV for a couple of hours, watching their motel room until the lights went dark. When you were sure they were asleep, you snuck over to the classic black beauty and placed a tracker there.
All you had to do now was wait and see, but you were more than sure they wouldn’t get far this time. Not on your watch.
Tumblr media
The next day, the Winchesters dressed up in suits and ties, visiting the family’s home that had been ravaged by monsters. The house was sealed off with yellow police tape as officers moved around the crime scene. The brothers held up their badges to another detective before entering the home.
“Singer and Kripke, FBI,” Sam said, flashing his badge.
“FBI? Your colleague was already here,” the officer frowned, and the brothers shared a look. It could only be the FBI agent they had run into yesterday at the bar.
“Let me guess – pretty, feisty, angry look on her face?” Dean mused with a chuckle, remembering the woman he had tried to hit on.
“That’s her,” the officer scoffed, “Told me to get outta her way or retire. You federal agents always think you’re better than us, but I’m doing good and honest police work here.”
“I’m sure you are, sir,” Dean apologized, switching on his charm. “I’m sorry for my colleague. She’s had a… rough night.”
The cop mumbled a few more choice words before disappearing out of sight again.
“You think she recognized us?” Sam whispered to his older brother.
Dean shrugged, shaking his head, “Nah, I think we’re good.”
“I’m just sayin’, we need to be careful, Dean,” Sam warned. “We don’t have Chuck around to protect us anymore.”
“Yeah, and that’s a damn good thing, remember?” Dean scoffed in response. “‘Sides, what’s he got to do with anything?”
“Well, he put luck on our side. You really thought us not getting caught all these years wasn’t on him?” Sam cocked an eyebrow at his brother.
“Never thought about that, actually. Figured it was my good looks and genius that kept us going for so long,” Dean smirked, earning him a frown.
“Dean, we need to be-”
“Careful,” he finished with an eye roll. “Yeah, you said that already. Multiple times. And we will. We solve this case, kill the monsters, and then back to the bunker we go. But c’mon, man! This is the first case in weeks. I’m starting to get bored.”
“Alright, fine. In and out,” Sam reiterated.
The brothers learned everything they needed to know before leaving the crime scene again. It was vampires, the victim’s drained blood giving them their final clue. Moreover, this quickly turned into a familiar case, John’s journal revealing a similar crime spree in the same town in the 80s. If the pattern held up, the little town of Canton, Ohio, would be next on the vamps’ list.
Sam and Dean then identified the next victims’ home that fit the previous pattern. The target house was located on the outskirts of town with two children living inside, no older than ten. Soon enough, they were proven right when a black van pulled up, and two people with black skeleton masks jumped out, both carrying blades.
Before the men could enter the house, Dean cut off the head of one of them with his machete. Sam then turned the attention of the second vamp to him and shot him in the leg and head with bullets full of dead man’s blood.
The brothers moved the unconscious body quickly away from the house and a little further into the woods. There were still two missing children out there – nothing a little torture couldn’t fix.
They tied the vamp’s hands behind his back, placing him down on a tree stump before Dean woke him up with a slap to the guy’s cheek. “Hey there, sleepy.”
“What'd you hit me with?” the vampire asked, still partially out from the poison coursing through his body.
“Oh, it speaks. Not a mime. Still evil, though,” Dean muttered.
“It was a bullet… soaked in dead man's blood,” Sam replied with a sly smile on his face.
“So, let's talk kids, hm?” Dean suggested, the machete ready in his hand, waiting to strike. “Those two that you grabbed a couple nights ago... Where are they?”
But the vampire laughed in his face fearlessly, clearly not caring about the oldest Winchester’s empty threats.
“Yeah, you really should tell him,” Sam advised the vamp knowingly, chuckling.
The monster stared between the brothers, contemplating for a second. “And if I do, what? You let me go?”
“Oh, no, no, no, no, no. No,” Dean shook his head vehemently. “This isn't a you-walk-out-of-here kind of a situation. But see, if you tell us quick, you get this.” He held up the shiny silver machete for the vamp to see. “But if you take your time, you get, uh... you get that.” He then gestured to Sam, who pulled out a tiny switchblade from his pocket.
“Yeah, I'll... I'll take that itty-bitty one,” the vamp retorted.
“That's a bad choice,” Sam stated.
“You see, this… this is quick,” Dean stated, showing the guy his machete again. “It’s clean. You know, no muss, no fuss. You blink, and you're dead.”
“But a blade this small-,” Sam continued to explain. “I'm gonna have to keep sawing and sawing to get your head off, and you'll feel it. Every muscle, tendon, every inch. It could take hours.”
Dean then leaned in a little closer to the vampire, “Oh, and if those kids are dead, he's gonna use a spoon.”
The guy looked nervously at the little blade in Sam’s hands before glancing back at Dean. “They… they're not dead. They're with the nest. We take a harvest. Every few years, grab a couple kids, raise them up, feed them right, juice them. We don't do fast food,” the vamp explained.
“Yeah, alright. Where are they?” Sam inquired.
“Barn, east outside of town,” the vampire replied compliantly before a laugh escaped his lips.
“What’s so funny?” Dean growled.
“Oh, you’re in trouble,” the vamp chuckled.
Before the brothers could figure out what the vamp was laughing about, they heard a gun clack behind their backs.
“FBI! Drop the weapons, hands behind your head, and turn around!” you ordered them.
“Son of a bitch! You gotta be kidding me,” Dean hissed, letting his head tilt back in annoyance. “You take care of him, I take care of her,” he whispered to Sam before the brothers dropped the blades and turned around as instructed.
“Agent Sweetheart, good to see you again,” Dean grinned at you.
“Sam and Dean Winchester, you’re under arrest. Step away from the victim,” you told them as they faced you.
Dean frowned at you, baffled, “Whoa, you think this guy is a victim? Look at him.”
“Yeah, lady, you gotta help me! These guys are crazy! They wanted to kill me with a spoon!” the man tied up on a tree stump informed you.
“Shut up,” the brothers told him in unison and rolled their eyes.
“Look, I know this is bad, but it isn’t what it looks like,” Dean tried to explain, taking a few steps closer to you. He stopped in his tracks as you adjusted your aim, pointing the gun directly between his eyes.
“Wouldn’t take a step further. I will definitely pull that trigger,” you warned him. “And it looks like you kidnapped a guy, tied him up, and were gonna kill him with a machete and a switchblade,” you pointed out. “I found the other body in front of the house. This ends now.”
“As I said, I know it looks bad. I know it’s gonna sound unbelievable, but this guy isn’t human,” Dean said, sharing a brief look with his brother. “He’s a vampire. We’re hunters. We hunt monsters like him. We’re on the same side here, Agent.”
“I’m not on your side,” you gritted your teeth at the insult. “And I have a psych degree. I know how paranoia and hallucinations work. Henriksen was right. You guys are whack jobs,” you stated, shaking your head at them. Vampires? Really? That’s what they tried to sell you on?
The brothers shared a long look at the mention of your former partner’s name, seemingly remembering him. You would make sure they’d remember your name, too.
“Henriksen? You worked with Agent Henriksen?” Sam asked you, a baffled expression written across his face.
“Yeah, he was my mentor and first partner. And you killed him,” you spat angrily.
“Whoa, okay! We did not kill him. Look, if you let us finish this, save those kids, we’ll explain everything you wanna know. But you gotta trust us, okay?” Dean told you, his green eyes boring into yours.
It was the most ridiculous thing you had ever heard. For twelve years, you hunted those two brutal serial killers, and now they were begging you to trust them. Trust them?!
Yet, something in those green eyes still tugged on you, making you believe he was sincere about his words. Delusion really was a funny thing.
“Sorry, can’t do that,” you said and pulled the trigger, aiming for his knee.
Dean jumped to the side just in time and tackled you to the ground while Sam picked up the machete and cut the other guy’s head off. Your gun flew out of your hands, and Dean was strong as he pinned you down on the wet grass. However, you were a trained agent, and with a few good kicks to his head and groin, you managed to get the oldest Winchester off of you long enough to get back onto your feet.
Dean, however, wasn’t far behind you, getting back up as well. “Sam, go! I’ll be right there!” he shouted at his younger brother, who made a run for it.
“You’re not getting away,” you snarled.
“Look, Agent Sweetheart, I tried to make this easy on you… I’m really sorry I have to do this, but it looks like you’re gonna have to take a brief nap,” Dean declared.
And then everything went black as you felt his fist hit your face.

Retro Camouflage's Return to Popularity?
It came to my attention several years ago, while browsing in a sporting goods store, a camouflage pattern I hadn't seen since my youth. As I looked at the design hanging on the rack, a flood of nostalgia came over me. That pattern was MossyOak Bottomlands.
Military Start
In order to see where we are with the revival of retro camouflage, we must take a look at its history. The first military use of a breakup style camo was in WWII with M1942 used by the Marine Corps.
Tumblr media
M1942 Camouflage Pattern. Also referred to as Frog Skin.
After WWII, soldiers returning home either used black and red buffalo plaid for hunting, or made use of the surpluses of the M1942 pattern by incorporating it into their hunting and sporting needs. It would become known as "Duck Hunter" and "Brown Camo" by its users. The popularity of the pattern, especially among duck and bird hunters, saw that it would be copied and used up until the early 90s by some companies.
Tumblr media
My vintage Columbia Gortex Hunting Jacket in "Duck Hunter" pattern. This was put out by Columbia from the late 1970s-early 1990s.
Like with M1942 the surplus market would give, and still gives, hunters a way to break up their outlines. Tiger Stripe, ERDL, and M81 woodland are patterns tried and used by many. Even up into the 90s, it wasn't uncommon around rural Northwest Georgia, where I live, to see M81 surplus being used in the deer woods.
Rise of the Commercial Market
The first attempt at making a commercial camouflage pattern, not based on military design, was TreBark. In the early 1970s, Jim Crumley a bow hunter from Virginia decided that the surplus patterns available thru mail-order and surplus stores weren't enough. By using a gray color base, and odorless brown and black markers, the first commercial pattern TreBark was born. It would take off for success in 1983 when Cabela's offered it in the fall catalog.
Tumblr media
The Original TreBark pattern.
In 1986, two other big names would enter the arena. MossyOak and RealTree. Like with Ford vs. Chevrolet, or Remington vs. Winchester, MossyOak and RealTree would start a debate on which pattern is better for years to come. Both Companies would evolve from the original patterns, and offer several different styles to fit the environment the hunter would be in. As manufacturing and technology advances, a lot of these patterns are 3D and in HD these days.

Current Times and Revival of Retro Patterns.
With all the advances in camouflage these days, it's exciting for a retro lover such as myself to see a revival of the old-school patterns. With MossyOak bringing back bottomlands, Drake offering what they are calling Old School; to folks customizing their boats, guns, and even tactical equipment in retro patterns, it's a welcome bit of nostalgia in today's shooting and sporting world. The trend toward using old-school camouflage for personalization and simpler practicality, over more recent offerings, I believe is part of the revival. It's easier to customize guns and equipment for example in the older and more basic patterns, when using paint, Cerakote, or coatings such as Alumahyde. Another part is just the cool factor and nostalgia it brings. There are several smaller companies offering retro type camouflage accessories, giving folks an option to style their guns or gear that way. JunkyardOps and Flatline Fiber Co. shown below are two of many examples of these type companies, and you can find a lot of options to do custom coatings in whatever pattern you want from Brownells. Either way, whatever pattern you decide on, be it old military or commercial camouflage, I believe it's a welcome sight in today's time!
Some examples of retro camouflage patterns giving some personality and customization:

My own Personal HK VP9, Custom camouflaged in a duckhunter pattern camouflage using Brownells Alumahyde II. It’s an affordable and durable way for a person to customize guns and gear with an aerosol epoxy paint type coating.
*You can Find all the different Alumahyde II colors in the link below, if you want to try your own hand at customizing your Guns and Gear. But be warned it is addictive once you start. You’ll be wanting to customize everything!*
