Very excited that my portrait of National Book Award winner Colum McCann (and Layla!) shot for @wsj took Third Place in the Celebrity category of the 2021 @americanphotographicartists APA Awards. Honored to be among the 43 amazing photographers selected as winners in the various categories. Can't wait to get my copy of the book of all the incredible images. While we did this setup, Colum's dog Layla hung off camera begging for treats and Colum would occasionally pull one from his vest pocket and give it to her between shots. Born and raised in Dublin, Ireland, he has been the recipient of many international honors, including the National Book Award.⁣⠀ ⁣⠀ In 2017 he was elected to the American Academy of Arts. Things have been busy, with all this packing for college and stuff, but I’d hate to pass the opportunity to write a review on this bad boy. It’s a collection of shortstories that come together at some point. You see different points of view from multiple characters, which adds originality to this novel. The writing is beautiful and the characters are diverse; if you’re a sucker for great meaningful quotes, just like I am, you’ll find a bunch of those too. I don’t want to spoil anything, so just trust me on this. It’s a solid 5 stars! . . Conflict. Often meaningless insecurities and jealousies form the basis of conflict. We are better than that. We are all the same-- we bleed the same colored blood, we get hurt and we are sensitive. Instead of differences, let's try and be better than our insecurities. Here's the detailed book review of this remarkable book, Aperiogon-- a masterpiece by Colum McCann. Many thanks to @bookopia @moonbeams.stardust @wantonruminating for letting me be a part of this. It has saved my life. Book Review: The most remarkable thing about this book is the way it brings forth the horrors of Israeli Palestinian conflict and yet manages to leave you with hope.  One of the rare books where the masterful storytelling takes precedence over the story itself. Don't get me wrong, the story is immensely raw and powerful: pushes one to dive into the depths of the primitive urges of walking the path of violence, the mistaking of justice for revenge, and the inevitable chaos and hurt that are bound to spring from it if we surrender to the industry of fear. But it is the storytelling that leaves me impressed. Fractured, sure, but it successfully stretches out singularity of art across the ages, boundaries and time (Music is liquid architecture  and architecture is frozen music - Goethe; The Emperor of Atlantis - Victor Ullmann; the origin of Mayday, Mayday, Mayday). The story is alive, it has a rhythm and a soul. It is not often one come across a writer that pushes the boundaries of the craft so boldly.  The characters couldn't possibly be more different: one Israeli, another Palestinian. Cataloged as per their religion, their dress and geography, much like the birds in the book, but one cannot escape the fact that they are as similar as they are different. Their grief of losing a child is universal, their humiliation in the face of being strip searched, often in front of their own kids, is universal. The need for dignity is universal. Zwei Väter, Rami Elhanan und Bassam Aramin, die unzählige Gemeinsamkeiten haben. Beide haben sie eine Tochter verloren, beide leben sie auf demselben Fleckchen Erde, beide wollen den anderen verstehen, beide wollen Frieden. Doch es trennen sie auch Welten: Rami ist Israeli, Bassam Palästinenser. Ramis Tochter wurde bei einem hinterhältigen Selbstmordattentat getötet, Bassams Tochter durch die Waffe eines israelischen Soldaten. Sie können sich nicht gegenseitig besuchen, das verbietet das Gesetz und an Checkpoints wird dies kontrolliert. In der Organisation “Parents Circle“ treffen sich Eltern wie sie, die durch den Konflikt ihre Kinder verloren haben und nur einen Wunsch haben: dass nicht noch mehr Eltern dieses Martyrium erleiden müssen.

 Colum McCanns Roman ist eine Mischung aus Fakt und Fiktion. Die beiden Väter und ihre Töchter sind real, jedoch nicht alle Gedanken und Ereignisse, die geschildert werden. Auch wird die Handlung durch zahlreiche Fakten ergänzt, die Lexikon-gleich das Geschilderte untermauern und auch versachlichen. Bevor es zu emotional wird, tritt man wieder einen Schritt zur��ck. Man bewegt sich immer wieder hin und her in diesem Spannungsfeld, das auch durch die 1000 Kapitel, die zunächst aufsteigend, dann absteigend nummeriert sind, unterstützt wird. Dieser Wechsel des Blickwinkels ist es auch, der schon im Titel festgeschrieben ist: ein „Apeirogon“ ist ein Vieleck mit einer gegen Unendlich gehenden Anzahl von Seiten. In der Nahaufnahme sieht man eine Linie und einen Winkel, aus der Ferne stellt sich die Figur jedoch womöglich ganz anders dar. So auch der Konflikt, der sich aus der Ferne zwischen zwei Staaten oder Völkern abspielt, aus der Nähe betrachtet jedoch das Schicksal einzelner Menschen besiegelt.

 Es ist nicht leicht zu fassen und zu verstehen, was Bassam und Rami erleiden. Dies wird durch Schleifen und Wiederholungen angedeutet, die gleich dem Leiden und gedanklichen Kreise-Drehen um immer wieder dasselbe Ereignis funktionieren. Smadar und Abir kannten sich nicht, zwischen ihren Todestagen liegen zehn Jahre und doch wurden ihre Schicksale miteinander verbunden; sie stehen auf verschiedenen Seiten desselben ermüdenden Konflikts und beide haben als junge Mädchen völlig sinnlos ihr Leben gelassen.

 „Damals fehlte mir das Bewusstsein, um es mir einzugestehen, aber verstehen Sie? Ich war Ende vierzig, und zum ersten Mal in meinem Leben begegneten mir Palästinenser als menschliche Wesen. (...) ich erkannte sie als Menschen, die die gleiche Last trugen wie ich, dasselbe Leid empfanden. Ihr Schmerz war mein Schmerz.“

 Zwei Seiten des Nahostkonflikts, gespiegelt in einem einzigen Roman. Eine Geschichte über Gewalt und Leid, aber auch über Vergebung und Aufeinanderzugehen. Ein politischer Roman, der jedoch das persönliche Schicksal ins Zentrum rückt und zeigt, dass viel zu oft die Menschen vergessen werden, die hinter politischen Entscheidungen stehen, die diese ausbaden und unter ihnen leiden. Auch McCann liefert keine Lösung, aber Hoffnung darauf, dass ein Wille vorhanden nicht, nicht noch mehr Leid zu produzieren. Für mich einer der literarisch ausgereiftesten und inhaltlich bedeutsamsten Romane des Jahres.

I love this feeling when you’re in a flow, nothing but the music fills your head and there are no thoughts anymore because your body takes over. . Last year I read “The Dancer” by Colum McCann. The book is about the famous dancer Nurejew but it’s not a biography, it’s written like a novel based on facts so we get a glimpse into Nurejew’s life, the political difficulties of being a dancer from the Soviet-union and the people who got to know Nurejew. . .
