The European General Studies programme of the College organised this end-of-the-year colloquium entitled “30 years after the anthropological report on the European Commission: Where does anthropology stand and what does it tell us about the European institutions?” on 20 & 21 June 2022.
This is a talk between Marc Abélès and Pascal Lamy on European Anthropology. Marc Abélès presents the report he wrote 30 years ago, reflect on the different methods and processes used for the report and will put into perspective the key conclusions from this report within current context. Pascal Lamy also explains in a video why this report was ordered and the impact it had on the institutions.

a lot of regressive pseudo-radical positions on kink & sexuality follow from someone identifying that sexual desires are socially conditioned (true and obvious the second we step away from idealist, innatist positions) but then jumping directly to "therefore it's bad, morally and consequentially, to act on desires conditioned by traumatising or unjust social forces"—as though these 'dangerous' desires & sexual practices can be neatly separated out from any others, as though any aspect of our current social situation is pure & good & 'healthful', as though it's actually the conditioned desires themselves that produce their own conditions. fundamentally unproductive response to the basic observation that sexuality, like everything else, is socially mediated & influenced.
at the same time it's instantly very unserious when someone tries to refute this by claiming that sexuality is somehow exempt from such social influences, is innate, and /or has no relationship to people's specific life experiences or to broader relations of power, abuse, identity, &c. repetitive pointless exchange between "desires are products of social environments and therefore must be regulated & reformed until they have been magically stripped of such influences" vs "actually they come from heaven above at random and therefore people can do what they want", as though the only way to argue for bodily and moral autonomy is if the thing in question is inborn. bad & immaterial analysis all round

Marine Studies Field Trip #5
This field trip was done virtually by viewing various website articles and videos on specifically Fort Myers Beach, Estero Island, and Matanzas Pass.
The following will be a mixture of my thoughts, answering some provided questions, as well as supplemented pictures to help understand the topic being discussed.
. . . . . .
What is an estuary?
An estuary is a partially enclosed, coastal water body where freshwater from rivers and streams mixes with salt water from the ocean.
Why are estuaries important for both the natural world and for humans?
They act like buffers, protecting lands from crashing waves and storms.
They help prevent soil erosion.
They soak up excess flood water and tidal surges.
They are important feeding and/or nursery habitat for commercially and ecologically important fish and invertebrates, and migrating birds.
Estuaries have an important commercial value. Their resources provide tourism, fisheries and recreational activities to have a greater economic benefit.
The protected coastal waters of estuaries also support public infrastructure such as harbors and ports which are a vital part of shipping and transportation.
Fun Fact about how estuaries can protect people and not just the animals that live in the immediate ecosystem:
*Estuaries can filter out sediments and pollutants from rivers and streams before they flow into the ocean. As water runs off the land, plants such as marsh vegetation and seagrasses absorb and filter out pollution. This provides cleaner water for humans and marine life.
Barrier Islands
Barrier islands are constantly shifting and migrating in response to storm events and the impacts from wave action. As a result, they accrete and erode sometimes overnight.
This dynamic nature of barrier islands causes difficulties for development. Waterside structures can be lost in a single weather event such as a hurricane, like we just went through, or be subject to beach accretion or erosion.
Hurricane Ian absolutely destroyed Fort Myers, including the barrier islands. These lands held the first infrastructures to make impact with the storm surges. This land is so fragile, so vulnerable, and what happened is very sad.
Therefore, building on the beach or any part of a barrier island is risky. But people are drawn to this idyllic location which often results in highly developed beaches.
Estero Island
Mid-19th century settlers to Estero Island began as a result of the Homestead Act of 1862. During the late 19th century, members of the Koreshans, a group of people living in a utopian commune near Estero, purchased land on Estero Island.
Some lived on the island, and a saw mill was also established on the island by the Koreshans. Few people lived on the island in those early settlement days, but the 20th century brought the land boom of the 1920s. Developments on the island were just getting underway when hurricanes in 1921 and 1926 stalled the development plans. The Great Depression pushed back further development of the island.
Although, fishermen were living on the island and thriving in the 1930s, 40s and 50s. During the 1950s, there was a renewed interest in the island as a vacation getaway destination. Tourism and commercial fishing have both been major players in the history of the island.
One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish!
The fishing industry has a deep history on Estero Island. During the 18th century, Spanish fishermen from Cuba fished these waters and sent dried and smoked fish back to Havana where local fishing banks had been “fished out.” Local fishermen have been plying the waters ever since.
By the 1930s and 40s, commercial fishermen were the local year-round residents of the island. Later, the discovery of shrimp (“pink gold”) in the area brought more fishermen to the area to exploit this newly found resource. While commercial fishing has historically been the cornerstone of the Estero Island economy, tourism (including recreational fishing) has since become the mainstay of the local economy.
*Final Fun Fact*
The boardwalk at Matanzas Pass is a great example of using recycled materials in construction. The boardwalk material is made up of plastic bottles and caps! How about that for sustainability?!
Thanks for reading,
Grace

Massive accomplishment: understood about 45 min of a 60 min colloquium talk :D
#colloquium is the more general talk for the whole department and theoretically accessible for grad students#but still proud#it was about projective spaces and combinatorics of skew lines on them#seven stories

so.... for the research colloquium of my BA supervisor I was only supposed to have 45 minutes available during which I should briefly present (and discuss) my research question, text sources, progress etc., but as it turns out the other student dropped out, and now I have a whole entire scary 90 minutes lecture to fill.... all by myself and with my flimsy idea of a BA thesis
#this is Good (getting space for my idea and feedback and a chance to try out the Colloquium ExperienceTM) but also Bad (Anxiety)#help#🥲#nowhere near ready to discuss my ideas for THAT LONG with all those cool and smart people rip that I admire but am also a little scared of#simon.out.#I don't know if this textpost makes any sense I'm surprisingly lost when it comes to translating my uni experience into english#also yeah... I'm a bit old for my BA in case you're wondering but alas “life got in the way” as my friend likes to say

ALSO the test went well all things considered!! i just didn't know some things about the rulebook so they didn't accept some of my answers because i crossed them out and wrote new correct ones for some questions + forgot to say whether it was a structure on left or right for some things even though i identified them correctly, so they took those points away too, but at least i know what to do for the actual practical in june
#it was way less scary then it's made out to be!!! literally like a quiz. i was a little sad at first for losing points#but then i remembered this is kind of a bonus because my grandparents had no idea how the practical looked#before the actual thing. and my friend who passed this last year told me he was way more scared for the colloquium#than he was for the actual thing because he saw how it worked earlier#so it's all good! and i got enough things right anyways#jo in the tardis*
